संजय उवाच अकरोत्तुमुलं युद्धं भीष्मः शांतनवस्तदा भीमसेनभयादिच्छन्पुत्रांस्तारयितुं तव

Sañjaya said: Śāntanu's son, Bhīṣma, then fought a tumultous battle, wishing to save your sons from their fear of Bhīmasena.

संजय ने कहा: तब शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने आपके पुत्रों को भीमसेन के भय से बचाने की इच्छा से भयंकर युद्ध किया।

पूर्वाह्णे तन्महारौद्रं राज्ञां युद्धमवर्तत कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च मुख्यशूरविनाशनम्

In the forenoon, there was an extremely terrible battle between the kins on the Kuru and Pāṇḍava sides, with the destruction of the foremost among warriors.

पूर्वाह्न में, कुरु और पांडव पक्षों के सगे भाइयों के बीच अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध हुआ, जिसमें सबसे प्रमुख योद्धा भी नष्ट हो गये।

तस्मिन्नाकुलसंग्रामे वर्तमाने महाभये अभवत्तुमुलः शब्दः संस्पृशन्गगनं महत्

While that extremely fearful battle was raging on, there was a great and tumultuous sound that seemed to touch the sky.

जब वह अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध चल रहा था, तब एक महान और कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि हुई जो आकाश को छूती हुई प्रतीत हुई।

नदद्भिश्च महानागैर्हेषमाणैश्च वाजिभिः भेरीशङ्खनिनादैश्च तुमुलः समपद्यत

Giant elephants roared. Horses neighed. There was the sound of drums and conch shells and there was a mighty roar.

विशालकाय हाथी गरजने लगे। घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे. ढोल-नगाड़ों और शंखों की आवाज आ रही थी और भयंकर गर्जना हो रही थी।

युयुत्सवस्ते विक्रान्ता विजयाय महाबलाः अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तो गोष्ठेष्विव महर्षभाः

Those valiant and extremely strong ones fought with each other, desiring victory. They roared at each other, like great bulls among herds of cows.

वे वीर और अत्यंत बलवान विजय की इच्छा से एक दूसरे से लड़ने लगे। वे एक-दूसरे पर ऐसे दहाड़ते थे, जैसे गायों के झुंड में बड़े बैल।

शिरसां पात्यमानानां समरे निशितैः शरैः अश्मवृष्टिरिवाकाशे बभूव भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! In that battle, heads were sliced down with sharp arrows and descended like a shower of stones from the sky.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस युद्ध में तीखे बाणों से सिर कटकर आकाश से पत्थरों की वर्षा की भाँति गिरने लगे।

कुण्डलोष्णीषधारीणि जातरूपोज्ज्वलानि च पतितानि स्म दृश्यन्ते शिरांसि भरतर्षभ

They still wore earrings and helmets, blazing in gold. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! These heads were seen to fall down.

वे अभी भी सोने से चमकते हुए झुमके और हेलमेट पहनते थे। हे भरत वंश में बैल! ये सिर नीचे गिरे हुए दिखाई दिये।

विशिखोन्मथितैर्गात्रैर्बाहुभिश्च सकार्मुकैः सहस्ताभरणैश्चान्यैरभवच्छादिता मही

The bodies were wounded by arrows. The severed arms still held on to bows. Adorned with ornaments, they were seen to be strewn all over the ground.

शरीर तीरों से घायल थे। कटी हुई भुजाएँ अभी भी धनुष पर टिकी हुई हैं। आभूषणों से सुसज्जित होकर वे सारी भूमि पर बिखरे हुए दिखाई देते थे।

कवचोपहितैर्गात्रैर्हस्तैश्च समलंकृतैः मुखैश्च चन्द्रसंकाशै रक्तान्तनयनैः शुभैः

The bodies bore armour. The upper arms were decorated with bracelets. The faces were like moons. The eyes were red.

शवों पर कवच था। ऊपरी भुजाओं को कंगनों से सजाया गया था। चेहरे चाँद जैसे थे. आंखें लाल थीं.

गजवाजिमनुष्याणां सर्वगात्रैश्च भूपते आसीत्सर्वा समाकीर्णा मुहूर्तेन वसुंधरा

O lord of the earth! There were all the bodies of elephants, horses and men. In an instant, the earth was covered with a thick dust.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वहाँ हाथियों, घोड़ों और मनुष्यों की सारी लाशें थीं। देखते ही देखते धरती घनी धूल से ढक गई।

रजोमेघैश्च तुमुलैः शस्त्रविद्युत्प्रकाशितैः आयुधानां च निर्घोषः स्तनयित्नुसमोऽभवत्

In that thick cloud of dust, the weapons were like lightning. The sound made by the weapons was like the clap of thunder.

धूल के उस घने बादल में हथियार बिजली की तरह चमक रहे थे। अस्त्र-शस्त्रों की ध्वनि गड़गड़ाहट के समान थी।

स संप्रहारस्तुमुलः कटुकः शोणितोदकः प्रावर्तत कुरूणां च पाण्डवानां च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The ensuing tumultuous and fierce encounter between the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s made a river of blood flow there.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कुरु-पांडवों के बीच होने वाली उथल-पुथल और भीषण मुठभेड़ ने वहां खून की नदी बहा दी।

तस्मिन्महाभये घोरे तुमुले लोमहर्षणे ववर्षुः शरवर्षाणि क्षत्रिया युद्धदुर्मदाः

It was an extremely fearful, terrible and tumultuous fight and it made the body hair stand up. Unassailable in that battle, the kṣatriya-s showered down arrows.

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! Afflicted by the shower of arrows in that encounter, your elephants, and those belonging to the enemy, screamed in agony. With their riders slain, the horses ran around in the ten directions.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! उस मुठभेड़ में बाणों की वर्षा से पीड़ित होकर आपके और शत्रु पक्ष के हाथी पीड़ा से चिल्लाने लगे। अपने सवारों के मारे जाने पर घोड़े दसों दिशाओं में इधर-उधर भागने लगे।

उत्पत्य निपतन्त्यन्ये शरघातप्रपीडिताः तावकानां परेषां च योधानां भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Your warriors, and those of the enemy, were oppressed and wounded by arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! आपके और शत्रुओं के योद्धा बाणों से पीड़ित और घायल हो गये।

अश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च रथानां चातिवर्तताम् संघाताः स्म प्रदृश्यन्ते तत्र तत्र विशां पते

They leapt up and fell down. O lord of the earth! Horses, elephants and chariots were seen to whirl around in the battle there.

वे उछले और नीचे गिर पड़े। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वहाँ युद्ध में घोड़े, हाथी और रथ घूमते दिखाई देते थे।

गदाभिरसिभिः प्रासैर्बाणैश्च नतपर्वभिः जघ्नुः परस्परं तत्र क्षत्रियाः कालचोदिताः

Driven by destiny, the kṣatriya-s killed each other there with clubs, lances and arrows with drooping tufts.

नियति से प्रेरित होकर, क्षत्रियों ने वहाँ एक-दूसरे को गदाओं, भालों और झुके हुए बाणों से मार डाला।

अपरे बाहुभिर्वीरा नियुद्धकुशला युधि बहुधा समसज्जन्त आयसैः परिघैरिव

Other brave ones, skilled in battle, struck each other with bare arms that were like clubs made completely out of iron.

युद्ध में कुशल अन्य वीरों ने एक-दूसरे पर नंगी भुजाओं से प्रहार किया, जो पूरी तरह से लोहे से बनी हुई लाठियों के समान थीं।

मुष्टिभिर्जानुभिश्चैव तलैश्चैव विशां पते अन्योन्यं जघ्निरे वीरास्तावकाः पाण्डवैः सह

O lord of the earth! The brave ones, on your side and that of the Pāṇḍava-s, killed each other with clenched fists, thighs and palms.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपके और पांडवों के पक्ष के बहादुरों ने एक-दूसरे को बंद मुट्ठियों, जाँघों और हथेलियों से मार डाला।

विरथा रथिनश्चात्र निस्त्रिंशवरधारिणः अन्योन्यमभिधावन्त परस्परवधैषिणः

Charioteers were bereft of their chariots. Desiring to kill each other, they rushed at each other, with excellent swords in their hands.

सारथी अपने रथों से वंचित हो गये। एक-दूसरे को मारने की इच्छा से, वे हाथों में उत्कृष्ट तलवारें लेकर एक-दूसरे पर टूट पड़े।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा कलिङ्गैर्बहुभिर्वृतः पुरस्कृत्य रणे भीष्मं पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तत

Surrounded by a large number of Kāliṅga-s and with Bhīṣma at the forefront, King Duryodhana charged against the Pāṇḍava-s.

बड़ी संख्या में कलिंगों से घिरे हुए और भीष्म को सबसे आगे लेकर, राजा दुर्योधन ने पांडवों पर आक्रमण किया।

तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे परिवार्य वृकोदरम् भीष्ममभ्यद्रवन्क्रुद्धा रणे रभसवाहनाः

At this, all the Pāṇḍava-s surrounded Vṛkodara. Inflamed with rage, they rushed against Bhīṣma on swift mounts.

इस पर सभी पांडवों ने वृकोदर को घेर लिया। वे क्रोध से भरकर भीष्म पर तीव्र गति से आक्रमण करने लगे।
