संजय उवाच ततो व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु तावकेष्वितरेषु च धनंजयो रथानीकमवधीत्तव भारत शरैरतिरथो युद्धे पातयन्रथयूथपान्

Sañjaya said: Your soldiers and those of the others were arranged in battle formation. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! After that, Dhanañjayā slaughtered a large number of charioteers on your side.

संजय ने कहा: आपके और अन्य लोगों के सैनिक युद्ध की व्यवस्था में व्यवस्थित थे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उसके बाद धनंजय ने आपके पक्ष के बहुत से रथियों का वध कर दिया।

ते वध्यमानाः पार्थेन कालेनेव युगक्षये धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे यत्ताः पाण्डवान्प्रत्ययोधयन् प्रार्थयाना यशो दीप्तं मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम्

In that battle, he used his arrows to bring down large numbers of charioteers. They were thus killed by Pārtha, like death at the time of the destruction of a yuga. But in that encounter, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra endeavoured to repulse the Pāṇḍava-s. They strove for blazing fame and preferred death to retreat.

O king! Thus single-minded in their objective in that battle, they broke through the Pāṇḍava ranks in many places and were themselves broken.

हे राजा! इस प्रकार उस युद्ध में अपने उद्देश्य में एकचित्त होकर, वे कई स्थानों पर पांडवों की सेना में टूट गये और स्वयं भी टूट गये।

द्रवद्भिरथ भग्नैश्च परिवर्तद्भिरेव च पाण्डवैः कौरवैश्चैव न प्रज्ञायत किंचन

Both the Pāṇḍava and the Kaurava were broken and fled, reassembling again. Nothing could be seen.

पांडव और कौरव दोनों टूट गए और फिर से संगठित होकर भाग गए। कुछ भी नजर नहीं आ रहा था.

हयारोहैर्हयारोहाः पात्यन्ते स्म महाहवे ऋष्टिभिर्विमलाग्राभिः प्रासैरपि च संयुगे

In that great battle, the bodies of men, horses and fallen elephants made the ground impassable and mud was created by flesh and blood.

प्रशशाम रजो भौमं व्युक्षितं रणशोणितैः दिशश्च विमलाः सर्वाः संबभूवुर्जनेश्वर

The dust that had arisen from the ground settled down because of the blood from the battle. O lord of men! Because of this, the directions again became clearly visible.

युद्ध के रक्त के कारण भूमि से उठी धूल नीचे बैठ गयी। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! इससे दिशाएं फिर से स्पष्ट दिखाई देने लगीं।

उत्थितान्यगणेयानि कबन्धानि समन्ततः चिह्नभूतानि जगतो विनाशार्थाय भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Many headless torsos were seen to arise from the ground, as a portent that all the beings in the universe would be destroyed.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जमीन से कई बिना सिर वाले धड़ निकलते देखे गए, जो इस बात का संकेत था कि ब्रह्मांड के सभी प्राणी नष्ट हो जाएंगे।

तस्मिन्युद्धे महारौद्रे वर्तमाने सुदारुणे प्रत्यदृश्यन्त रथिनो धावमानाः समन्ततः

In that extremely terrible and fearful battle, charioteers could be seen to flee in every direction.

उस अत्यंत भयानक और भयावह युद्ध में रथी सभी दिशाओं में भागते नजर आने लगे।

ततो द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः पुरुमित्रो विकर्णश्च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इस प्रकार, भीमसेन, राक्षस घटोत्कच, सात्यकि, चेकितान और द्रौपदी के पुत्र

तावकांस्तव पुत्रांश्च सहितान्सर्वराजभिः द्रावयामासुराजौ ते त्रिदशा दानवानिव

oppressed your sons, together with all the kings, like the gods against the dānava-s.

देवताओं ने दानवों के विरुद्ध समस्त राजाओं सहित आपके पुत्रों पर अत्याचार किया।

तथा ते समरेऽन्योन्यं निघ्नन्तः क्षत्रियर्षभाः रक्तोक्षिता घोररूपा विरेजुर्दानवा इव

Those bulls among kṣatriya-s killed each other in that battle. Drenched in battle, they assumed terrible forms, like dazzling dānava-s.

उस युद्ध में क्षत्रिय बैलों ने एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। युद्ध में भीगकर उन्होंने तेजस्वी दानवों के समान भयानक रूप धारण कर लिया।

विनिर्जित्य रिपून्वीराः सेनयोरुभयोरपि व्यदृश्यन्त महामात्रा ग्रहा इव नभस्तले

In both the armies, brave ones triumphed over their enemies and seemed to be like the best of planets in the firmament.

दोनों सेनाओं में वीरों ने अपने शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त की और वे आकाश में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ग्रहों के समान प्रतीत होने लगे।

ततो रथसहस्रेण पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव अभ्ययात्पाण्डवान्युद्धे राक्षसं च घटोत्कचम्

ततः प्रववृते भूयः संग्रामो लोमहर्षणः तावकानां परेषां च समरे विजिगीषताम्
