धृतराष्ट्र उवाच इरावन्तं तु निहतं दृष्ट्वा पार्था महारथाः संग्रामे किमकुर्वन्त तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: O Sañjaya! On seeing that Irāvat had been killed in the battle, what did the mahāratha Pārtha-s do?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: हे संजय! यह देखकर कि इरावत युद्ध में मारा गया, महारथ पार्थ ने क्या किया?

संजय उवाच इरावन्तं तु निहतं संग्रामे वीक्ष्य राक्षसः व्यनदत्सुमहानादं भैमसेनिर्घटोत्कचः

Sañjaya said: On seeing that Irāvat had been killed in the battle, Bhīmasena's son, the rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca, let out a loud roar.

संजय ने कहा: यह देखकर कि इरावत युद्ध में मारा गया, भीमसेन के पुत्र राक्षस घटोत्कच ने जोर से दहाड़ लगाई।

नदतस्तस्य शब्देन पृथिवी सागराम्बरा सपर्वतवना राजंश्चचाल सुभृशं तदा अन्तरिक्षं दिशश्चैव सर्वाश्च प्रदिशस्तथा

O king! At the sound of this roar, the earth, up to the frontiers of the ocean, with its mountains and forests, seemed to tremble violently. So did the sky, the directions and all the sub-directions.

हे राजा! इस गर्जना की आवाज से, समुद्र की सीमा तक, पहाड़ों और जंगलों सहित पृथ्वी हिंसक रूप से कांपने लगी। इसी प्रकार आकाश, दिशाएँ और सभी उप-दिशाएँ भी हुईं।

तं श्रुत्वा सुमहानादं तव सैन्यस्य भारत ऊरुस्तम्भः समभवद्वेपथुः स्वेद एव च

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On hearing this extremely loud roar, the thighs and other limbs of all your soldiers began to tremble. They quaked and began to sweat.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इस अत्यंत तीव्र गर्जना को सुनकर आपके सभी सैनिकों की जाँघें तथा अन्य अंग कांपने लगे। वे कांपने लगे और उन्हें पसीना आने लगा।

सर्व एव च राजेन्द्र तावका दीनचेतसः सर्पवत्समवेष्टन्त सिंहभीता गजा इव

O Indra among kings! All those on your side became dispirited. They seemed to be in the coils of a snake and were like elephants frightened of a lion.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! आपके पक्ष के सभी लोग निराश हो गये। वे साँप की शक्ल में लिपटे हुए और सिंह से डरे हुए हाथियों के समान जान पड़ते थे।

निनदत्सुमहानादं निर्घातमिव राक्षसः ज्वलितं शूलमुद्यम्य रूपं कृत्वा विभीषणम्

The rākṣasa let out that extremely loud roar. He raised a flaming spear and assumed a terrible form.

राक्षस ने अत्यंत तीव्र गर्जना की। उसने एक जलता हुआ भाला उठाया और भयानक रूप धारण कर लिया।

नानाप्रहरणैर्घोरैर्वृतो राक्षसपुंगवैः आजगाम सुसंक्रुद्धः कालान्तकयमोपमः

He was surrounded by terrible bulls among rākṣasa-s, wielding many weapons. They advanced in great anger, like Yāma at the end of time.

वह राक्षसों के बीच भयानक बैलों से घिरा हुआ था, जिनके पास कई हथियार थे। वे अंत समय में यम के समान अत्यंत क्रोध में आगे बढ़े।

तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य संक्रुद्धं भीमदर्शनम् स्वबलं च भयात्तस्य प्रायशो विमुखीकृतम्

On witnessing him advance, in anger and with a terrible form and beholding that his own soldiers were frightened and were running away,

उसे क्रोध और भयानक रूप में आगे बढ़ते देखकर और यह देखकर कि उसके अपने सैनिक भयभीत हो गए हैं और भाग रहे हैं,

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा घटोत्कचमुपाद्रवत् प्रगृह्य विपुलं चापं सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः

King Duryodhana attacked Ghaṭotkaca. He grasped a large bow and repeatedly roared like a lion.

राजा दुर्योधन ने घटोत्कच पर आक्रमण किया। उसने एक बड़ा धनुष पकड़ लिया और बार-बार सिंह की भाँति दहाड़ने लगा।

पृष्ठतोऽनुययौ चैनं स्रवद्भिः पर्वतोपमैः कुञ्जरैर्दशसाहस्रैर्वङ्गानामधिपः स्वयम्

The lord of Vaṅga himself followed him at the back, with ten thousand elephants that were like mountains and were exuding musth.

वंगा के स्वामी स्वयं दस हजार हाथियों के साथ, जो पर्वतों के समान थे और जोश से भरे हुए थे, उनके पीछे पीछे चले।

तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य गजानीकेन संवृतम् पुत्रं तव महाराज चुकोप स निशाचरः

O great king! On seeing that your son was advancing, surrounded by an army of elephants, the traveller of the night became angry.

हे महान राजा! यह देखकर कि आपका पुत्र हाथियों की सेना से घिरा हुआ आगे बढ़ रहा है, रात्रि यात्री क्रोधित हो गया।

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् राक्षसानां च राजेन्द्र दुर्योधनबलस्य च

O Indra among kings! A tumultuous battle commenced between the rākṣasa and Duryodhana's soldiers and it made the body hair stand up.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! राक्षस और दुर्योधन के सैनिकों के बीच घमासान युद्ध शुरू हो गया और इससे उसके शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।

गजानीकं च संप्रेक्ष्य मेघवृन्दमिवोद्यतम् अभ्यधावन्त संक्रुद्धा राक्षसाः शस्त्रपाणयः

That army of elephants was like a mās-s of clouds, charged with lightning. On beholding it advance, the angry rākṣasa-s grasped weapons in their hands.

हाथियों की वह सेना बिजली से चमकते हुए बादलों के समूह के समान थी। उसे आगे बढ़ता देख क्रोधित राक्षसों ने अपने हाथों में हथियार ले लिये।

नदन्तो विविधान्नादान्मेघा इव सविद्युतः शरशक्त्यृष्टिनाराचैर्निघ्नन्तो गजयोधिनः

They roared in many different ways, like thundering clouds full of lightning. They began to strike down the elephant-riders with arrows,

वे बिजली से भरे गरजते बादलों के समान अनेक प्रकार से गर्जना करते थे। वे हाथियों पर सवारों को बाणों से मारने लगे,

भिण्डिपालैस्तथा शूलैर्मुद्गरैः सपरश्वधैः पर्वताग्रैश्च वृक्षैश्च निजघ्नुस्ते महागजान्

javelins, swords, iron arrows, catapults, spears and battleaxes. They killed the mighty elephants with the peaks of mountains and trees.

भाले, तलवारें, लोहे के तीर, गुलेल, भाले और बटुए। उन्होंने पर्वतों और वृक्षों की चोटियों से शक्तिशाली हाथियों को मार डाला।

भिन्नकुम्भान्विरुधिरान्भिन्नगात्रांश्च वारणान् अपश्याम महाराज वध्यमानान्निशाचरैः

Their temples were shattered. Blood began to flow from the mangled bodies of the elephants. O great king! We saw that they were killed by those travellers of the night.

उनके मन्दिर तोड़ दिये गये। हाथियों के क्षत-विक्षत शरीर से रक्त बहने लगा। हे महान राजा! हमने देखा कि रात के उन यात्रियों ने उन्हें मार डाला।

तेषु प्रक्षीयमाणेषु भग्नेषु गजयोधिषु दुर्योधनो महाराज राक्षसान्समुपाद्रवत्

The warriors on elephants were scattered. O great king! On seeing this, Duryodhana attacked the rākṣasa-s.

हाथियों पर सवार योद्धा तितर-बितर हो गये। हे महान राजा! यह देखकर दुर्योधन ने राक्षसों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

अमर्षवशमापन्नस्त्यक्त्वा जीवितमात्मनः मुमोच निशितान्बाणान्राक्षसेषु महाबलः

He was overcome by intolerance and gave up all desire to protect his own life. The immensely strong one released arrows towards the rākṣasa-s.

वह असहिष्णुता से उबर गया और उसने अपने जीवन की रक्षा करने की सभी इच्छाएँ त्याग दीं। अत्यंत बलवान ने राक्षसों की ओर बाण छोड़े।

जघान च महेष्वासः प्रधानांस्तत्र राक्षसान् संक्रुद्धो भरतश्रेष्ठ पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव

The great archer slew the foremost among the rākṣasa-s. O best of the Bhārata lineage! Your son, Duryodhana, was angry.

महान धनुर्धर ने सबसे बड़े राक्षस को मार डाला। हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! आपका पुत्र दुर्योधन क्रोधित था।

वेगवन्तं महारौद्रं विद्युज्जिह्वं प्रमाथिनम् शरैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो निजघान महारथः

The mahāratha used four arrows to kill four of them—Vegavat, Mahāraudra, Vidyutjihva and Pramathi.

उनमें से चार को मारने के लिए महारथ ने चार बाणों का उपयोग किया - वेगवत, महारुद्र, विद्युतजिह्वा और प्रमथि।

ततः पुनरमेयात्मा शरवर्षं दुरासदम् मुमोच भरतश्रेष्ठ निशाचरबलं प्रति

O best of the Bhārata lineage! The one whose soul is immeasurable showered down arrows that were irresistible, towards that army of travellers in the night.

हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! जिसकी आत्मा अपरिमेय है, उसने रात में यात्रियों की उस सेना पर अप्रतिरोध्य बाणों की वर्षा की।

तत्तु दृष्ट्वा महत्कर्म पुत्रस्य तव मारिष क्रोधेनाभिप्रजज्वाल भैमसेनिर्महाबलः

O venerable one! On seeing that great deed of your son, Bhīmasena's extremely strong son blazed forth in anger.

हे आदरणीय! आपके पुत्र का वह महान कार्य देखकर भीमसेन का अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्र क्रोध से आग बबूला हो उठा।

विस्फार्य च महच्चापमिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम् अभिदुद्राव वेगेन दुर्योधनमरिंदमम्

He twanged his great bow, with a sound like that of Indra's vajra. The scorcher of enemies forcefully attacked Duryodhana.

उसने अपने विशाल धनुष को घुमाया, जिसकी ध्वनि इंद्र के वज्र के समान थी। शत्रुओं को संताप देने वाले दुर्योधन पर बलपूर्वक आक्रमण |

तमापतन्तमुद्वीक्ष्य कालसृष्टमिवान्तकम् न विव्यथे महाराज पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव

O great king! On seeing him advance, like Death urged on by the Destroyer, your son, Duryodhana, was not distressed.

हे महान राजा! संहारक की ओर से प्रेरित मृत्यु के समान उसे आगे बढ़ता देख आपके पुत्र दुर्योधन को कोई कष्ट नहीं हुआ।

अथैनमब्रवीत्क्रुद्धः क्रूरः संरक्तलोचनः ये त्वया सुनृशंसेन दीर्घकालं प्रवासिताः यच्च ते पाण्डवा राजंश्छलद्यूते पराजिताः

The cruel one angrily spoke to him, his eyes red with rage. "It is because of your great cruelty that they were exiled for a long time. O king! You defeated the Pāṇḍava-s in a deceitful game of dice.

क्रूर ने गुस्से से उससे बात की, उसकी आँखें गुस्से से लाल हो गईं। "यह आपकी महान क्रूरता के कारण है कि उन्हें लंबे समय तक निर्वासित किया गया। हे राजा! आपने पासे के धोखेबाज खेल में पांडवों को हरा दिया।

यच्चैव द्रौपदी कृष्णा एकवस्त्रा रजस्वला सभामानीय दुर्बुद्धे बहुधा क्लेशिता त्वया

O one with evil intelligence! It was because of this that Draupadī Kṛṣṇā was brought to the assembly hall, though she was in her menses and was clad in a single garment. You caused her hardship in many ways.

हे दुष्ट बुद्धि वाले! यही कारण था कि द्रौपदी कृष्ण को सभा भवन में लाया गया, हालाँकि वह मासिक धर्म में थी और एक ही वस्त्र पहने हुई थी। तुमने अनेक प्रकार से उसे कष्ट पहुँचाया।

तव च प्रियकामेन आश्रमस्था दुरात्मना सैन्धवेन परिक्लिष्टा परिभूय पितॄन्मम

While they dwelt in the hermitage, it was to bring you pleasure that the evil-souled Saindhava tormented her, disrespecting my fathers.

जब वे आश्रम में निवास कर रहे थे, तो आपको प्रसन्न करने के लिए दुष्टात्मा सैन्धव ने मेरे पिताओं का अनादर करके उन्हें कष्ट दिया।

एतेषामवमानानामन्येषां च कुलाधम अन्तमद्य गमिष्यामि यदि नोत्सृजसे रणम्

O worst of your lineage! Because of this and many other insults, I will bring about your end today, if you do not flee from the field of battle."

हे तुम्हारे वंश के सबसे बुरे! इस और कई अन्य अपमानों के कारण, यदि तुम युद्ध के मैदान से भाग नहीं गए, तो मैं आज तुम्हारा अंत कर दूंगा।

एवमुक्त्वा तु हैडिम्बो महद्विस्फार्य कार्मुकम् संदश्य दशनैरोष्ठं सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन्

Having said this, Hiḍimbā's son drew his gigantic bow. He bit his lip and licked the corners of his mouth.

इतना कहकर हिडिम्बा के पुत्र ने अपना विशाल धनुष निकाला। उसने अपने होंठ काटे और मुँह के कोनों को चाटा।

शरवर्षेण महता दुर्योधनमवाकिरत् पर्वतं वारिधाराभिः प्रावृषीव बलाहकः

He covered Duryodhana with a great shower of arrows, like the slayer of Bāla bringing down a shower of rain on a mountain during the monsoon.

उन्होंने दुर्योधन को बाणों की भारी वर्षा से ढक दिया, जैसे बाला का वध करने वाला मानसून के दौरान पर्वत पर वर्षा की बौछार कर देता है।
