संजय उवाच दृष्ट्वा भीष्मेण संसक्तान्भ्रातॄनन्यांश्च पार्थिवान् तमभ्यधावद्गाङ्गेयमुद्यतास्त्रो धनंजयः

Sañjaya said: On seeing Bhīṣma engaged in a fight with his brothers and the other kings, Dhanañjayā raised his weapons and rushed against Gāṅgeya.

असज्जमानं वृक्षेषु धूमकेतुमिवोत्थितम् बहुवर्णं च चित्रं च दिव्यं वानरलक्षणम् अपश्याम महाराज ध्वजं गाण्डिवधन्वनः

It was like a tree that did not waver, like a comet that had arisen. It was colourful and possessed many hues. It was divine and bore the mark of the ape. O great king! We saw the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva's standard to be of this type.

With all your sons, they sought succour with Bhīṣma. In that battle, Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, became the refuge of the oppressed ones.

There were a large number of the best of Kāmboja horses, fleet of foot. This was surrounded by a large army from the land of Govāsana, with many thousand gopa-s.

रथिभिर्वारणैरश्वैः पदातैश्च समीरितम् घोरमायोधनं जज्ञे महाभ्रसदृशं रजः

The chariots, elephants, horses and infantry raised an extremely thick cloud of dust and it made the battle seem even more fearful.

रथों, हाथियों, घोड़ों और पैदल सेना ने धूल का अत्यधिक घना बादल उठा लिया और इससे युद्ध और भी भयावह लगने लगा।

Bhīṣma was supported by a large army with spears, lances, iron arrows, elephants, horses, chariots and warriors and attacked Kirīṭī.

Drupada, Cekitāna and mahāratha Sātyaki fought with the great-souled Droṇa, together with his son. Kṛpa and Kritavarma advanced against Dhṛṣṭaketu.

निरभ्रे विद्युतस्तीव्रा दिशश्च रजसावृताः प्रादुरासन्महोल्काश्च सनिर्घाता विशां पते

Though there were no clouds, there was terrible lightning. Dust enveloped the directions. O lord of the earth! With terrible sounds, large meteors were seen to fall down.

यद्यपि बादल नहीं थे, भयानक बिजली चमक रही थी। दिशाओं में धूल छा गई। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! भयंकर ध्वनि के साथ बड़े-बड़े उल्कापिंड गिरते हुए दिखाई दिये।

प्रववौ च महावातः पांसुवर्षं पपात च नभस्यन्तर्दधे सूर्यः सैन्येन रजसावृतः

A mighty storm began to blow and a shower of dust fell down. The soldiers were shrouded in dust and the sun disappeared in the sky.

ज़ोरदार तूफ़ान चलने लगा और धूल की बौछार गिरने लगी। सैनिक धूल में डूबे हुए थे और सूरज आकाश में गायब हो गया था।

प्रमोहः सर्वसत्त्वानामतीव समपद्यत रजसा चाभिभूतानामस्त्रजालैश्च तुद्यताम्

Covered by that dust, though they continued to fight with upraised weapons, all the soldiers were confused and dispirited.

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Shields were seen to be scattered around in all the directions. They were colourful and made from the hides of bulls. They were decorated with golden nets.

Heads and bodies were seen to fall in every direction, sliced off by swords with the complexion of the sun.

Mahāratha-s fell down on the ground there. The wheels, axles and shafts of their chariots were shattered.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन सर्वश्रेष्ठ घोड़ों के पास अभी भी उनकी साज-सज्जा थी। परन्तु वे तीरों से घायल हो गये और उनके शरीर क्षत-विक्षत हो गये। उन्हें वहां जूए को अपने पीछे खींचते हुए देखा जा सकता था।

अदृश्यन्त ससूताश्च साश्वाः सरथयोधिनः एकेन बलिना राजन्वारणेन हता रथाः

O king! Extremely powerful elephants were seen to kill rāṭha-s who fought on chariots, with their charioteers and horses, single-handedly.

हे राजा! अत्यधिक शक्तिशाली हाथियों को रथों पर, अपने सारथियों और घोड़ों के साथ, अकेले लड़ने वाले रथों को मारने के लिए देखा गया था।

गन्धहस्तिमदस्रावमाघ्राय बहवो रणे संनिपाते बलौघानां वीतमाददिरे गजाः

While large numbers of soldiers were being killed, many elephants were seen to sniff in the air, inhaling the scent of the musth exuded by other elephants.

In the midst of that large army, elephants were killed with lances and iron arrows and fell down, deprived of their lives. The field was strewn with the dead bodies of the best of elephants.

In the midst of the army, The elephants crushed warriors as they fell down, with their elephant-riders and their standards.

In that battle, they crushed and dragged down charioteers by the hair, as if they were the branches of trees.
