धृतराष्ट्र उवाच एवं व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु मामकेष्वितरेषु च कथं प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठाः संप्रहारं प्रचक्रिरे

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: Having assembled in battle formation in this way, what did mine and those of the others do? How did those supreme among wielders of weapons strike?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: इस प्रकार युद्ध-रचना में एकत्रित होकर, मैंने और दूसरों ने क्या किया? शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ उन लोगों ने कैसे आक्रमण किया?

संजय उवाच समं व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु संनद्धा रुचिरध्वजाः अपारमिव संदृश्य सागरप्रतिमं बलम्

Sañjaya replied: All the troops were arranged in battle formation. The warriors were armoured and waited. The standards were raised up.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: सभी सैनिक युद्ध संरचना में व्यवस्थित थे। योद्धा बख्तरबंद थे और इंतजार कर रहे थे। मानक ऊपर उठाये गये।

तेषां मध्ये स्थितो राजा पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव अब्रवीत्तावकान्सर्वान्युध्यध्वमिति दंशिताः

On seeing his army, which was like the limitless ocean, your son, King Duryodhana, stationed himself in its midst and spoke to all the warriors on your side. "You are armoured. Now fight."

अथाह सागर के समान उसकी सेना को देखकर आपके पुत्र राजा दुर्योधन उसके बीच में खड़े हो गये और आपके पक्ष के सभी योद्धाओं से बोले। "तुम बख्तरबंद हो। अब लड़ो।"

ते मनः क्रूरमास्थाय समभित्यक्तजीविताः पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त सर्व एवोच्छ्रितध्वजाः

Their minds were full of cruelty and they had given up the desire to live. With their standards raised, all of them rushed against the Pāṇḍava-s.

उनके मन क्रूरता से भरे हुए थे और उन्होंने जीने की इच्छा ही छोड़ दी थी। वे सभी अपना मान-सम्मान ऊंचा करके पांडवों पर टूट पड़े।

ततो युद्धं समभवत्तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् तावकानां परेषां च व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपम्

A terrible battle started and it made the body hair stand up. Your chariots and elephants were mixed up with that of the enemy.

भयंकर युद्ध छिड़ गया और शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गये। आपके रथ और हाथी शत्रु के रथों और हाथियों से मिल गये थे।

मुक्तास्तु रथिभिर्बाणा रुक्मपुङ्खाः सुतेजनाः संनिपेतुरकुण्ठाग्रा नागेषु च हयेषु च

Charioteers released sharp arrows that were full of energy and shafted with gold. These descended on elephants and horses.

सारथियों ने तेज तीर छोड़े जो ऊर्जा से भरे हुए थे और सोने से लदे हुए थे। ये हाथियों और घोड़ों पर सवार होकर उतरे।

तथा प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे धनुरुद्यम्य दंशितः अभिपत्य महाबाहुर्भीष्मो भीमपराक्रमः

When the battle commenced, the mighty-armed and armoured Bhīṣma, terrible in his valour, grasped a bow.

जब युद्ध प्रारम्भ हुआ, तो महाबाहु और कवचधारी भीष्म ने, जो अपनी वीरता में भयानक थे, धनुष उठा लिया।

सौभद्रे भीमसेने च शैनेये च महारथे केकये च विराटे च धृष्टद्युम्ने च पार्षते

Subhadrā's son, Bhīmasena, Śini's mahāratha son, Kekaya, Virāṭa, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna and the lords of Cedi and Mātsya-

सुभद्रा के पुत्र, भीमसेन, शिनि के महारथ पुत्र, केकय, विराट, परशत धृष्टद्युम्न और चेदि और मत्स्य के स्वामी-

एतेषु नरवीरेषु चेदिमत्स्येषु चाभितः ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि वृद्धः कुरुपितामहः

- the aged grandfather of the Kuru-s advanced and showered arrows on those brave men

कुरु के वृद्ध पितामह आगे बढ़े और उन वीरों पर बाणों की वर्षा करने लगे

प्राकम्पत महाव्यूहस्तस्मिन्वीरसमागमे सर्वेषामेव सैन्यानामासीद्व्यतिकरो महान्

At the encounter with that brave one, the great vyūha wavered. The battle that was fought by all the soldiers was extremely great.

उस वीर के साथ मुठभेड़ में, महान व्यूह डगमगा गया। सभी सैनिकों द्वारा किया गया वह युद्ध अत्यंत महान था।

सादितध्वजनागाश्च हतप्रवरवाजिनः विप्रयातरथानीकाः समपद्यन्त पाण्डवाः

Many horse-riders, charioteers and the foremost among elephants were slain. Masses of chariots on the Pāṇḍava side began to flee.

कई घुड़सवार, सारथी और सबसे प्रमुख हाथी मारे गये। पांडव पक्ष के रथों की भीड़ भागने लगी।

अर्जुनस्तु नरव्याघ्रो दृष्ट्वा भीष्मं महारथम् वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीत्क्रुद्धो याहि यत्र पितामहः

Arjuna, tiger among men, saw mahāratha Bhīṣma. He angrily told Vārṣṇeya, "Go where the grandfather is.

मनुष्यों में व्याघ्र अर्जुन ने महारथी भीष्म को देखा। उन्होंने क्रोधित होकर वाष्र्णेय से कहा, ''वहाँ जाओ जहाँ दादाजी हैं।

एष भीष्मः सुसंक्रुद्धो वार्ष्णेय मम वाहिनीम् नाशयिष्यति सुव्यक्तं दुर्योधनहिते रतः

O Vārṣṇeya! It is evident that when he is extremely enraged, engaged in Duryodhana's welfare, this Bhīṣma will destroy my army.

हे वार्ष्णेय! यह स्पष्ट है कि जब यह भीष्म अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर दुर्योधन के कल्याण में लगा होगा तो वह मेरी सेना को नष्ट कर देगा।

एष द्रोणः कृपः शल्यो विकर्णश्च जनार्दन धार्तराष्ट्राश्च सहिता दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः

O Janārdana! Droṇa, Kṛpa, Śalya, Vikarṇa and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, with Duryodhana at the forefront,

हे जनार्दन! द्रोण, कृप, शल्य, विकर्ण और धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र, दुर्योधन सबसे आगे,

पाञ्चालान्निहनिष्यन्ति रक्षिता दृढधन्वना सोऽहं भीष्मं गमिष्यामि सैन्यहेतोर्जनार्दन

protected by the one who wields a firm bow, will slaughter the Pāñcāla-s. O Janārdana! For the sake of our soldiers, I will go where Bhīṣma is."

दृढ़ धनुषधारी द्वारा सुरक्षित, वह पंचालों का वध करेगा। हे जनार्दन! अपने सैनिकों की खातिर, मैं वहाँ जाऊँगा जहाँ भीष्म हैं।"

तमब्रवीद्वासुदेवो यत्तो भव धनंजय एष त्वा प्रापये वीर पितामहरथं प्रति

Vāsudeva replied, ""O Dhanañjayā! O brave one! Be careful. I will take you towards the grandfather's chariot."

वासुदेव ने उत्तर दिया, ""हे धनंजय! हे वीर! ध्यान से। मैं तुम्हें दादाजी के रथ की ओर ले चलूँगा।”

एवमुक्त्वा ततः शौरी रथं तं लोकविश्रुतम् प्रापयामास भीष्माय रथं प्रति जनेश्वर

O lord of men! Having said this, Śauri took the chariot, famous in the worlds, towards Bhīṣma's chariot.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! ऐसा कहकर शौरि ने लोक-प्रसिद्ध रथ भीष्म के रथ की ओर बढ़ाया।

चञ्चद्बहुपताकेन बलाकावर्णवाजिना समुच्छ्रितमहाभीमनदद्वानरकेतुना महता मेघनादेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा

The horses had the complexion of cranes. As it advanced, many flags fluttered. The standard was raised and the extremely terrible ape roared on it. The chariot was as radiant as the sun and it roared like a giant cloud.

घोड़ों का रंग सारस जैसा था। जैसे-जैसे यह आगे बढ़ा, कई झंडे लहराये। मानक ऊंचा हो गया और अत्यंत भयानक वानर उस पर गरजने लगा। वह रथ सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान था और विशाल बादल के समान गर्जना कर रहा था।

विनिघ्नन्कौरवानीकं शूरसेनांश्च पाण्डवः आयाच्छरान्नुदञ्शीघ्रं सुहृच्छोषविनाशनः

Pāṇḍava slaughtered the soldiers of the Kaurava-s and the Śūrasena-s and the one who dispelled the sorrow of his well-wishers swiftly advanced to the battle.

पांडव ने कौरवों और शूरसेन के सैनिकों को मार डाला और अपने शुभचिंतकों के दुःख को दूर करने वाले पांडव तेजी से युद्ध में आगे बढ़े।

तमापतन्तं वेगेन प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम् त्रासयानं रणे शूरान्पातयन्तं च सायकैः

He descended with the force of an intoxicated elephant, using his arrows to bring down warriors in that battle.

वह उस युद्ध में योद्धाओं को नीचे गिराने के लिए अपने तीरों का उपयोग करते हुए, एक मदमस्त हाथी की शक्ति के साथ उतरा।

सैन्धवप्रमुखैर्गुप्तः प्राच्यसौवीरकेकयैः सहसा प्रत्युदीयाय भीष्मः शांतनवोऽर्जुनम्

Śāntanu's son, Bhīṣma, was protected by warriors who were led by Saindhava and those from the east, Sauvīra and Kekaya and encountered him with force.

शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म की रक्षा सैन्धव और पूर्व के सौवीर और केकय जैसे योद्धाओं ने की थी और उनका बलपूर्वक सामना किया था।

को हि गाण्डीवधन्वानमन्यः कुरुपितामहात् द्रोणवैकर्तनाभ्यां वा रथः संयातुमर्हति

Who other than the grandfather of the Kuru-s and the two rāṭha-s Droṇa and Vaikartaṇa are capable of withstanding the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva in battle?

कुरु-पितामह और दो रथ-एस द्रोण और वैकर्तन के अलावा युद्ध में गाण्डीव के योद्धा का सामना करने में कौन सक्षम है?

ततो भीष्मो महाराज कौरवाणां पितामहः अर्जुनं सप्तसप्तत्या नाराचानां समावृणोत्

O great king! Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kaurava-s, pierced Arjuna with seventy-seven iron arrows.

हे महान राजा! कौरवों के पितामह भीष्म ने अर्जुन को सतहत्तर लोहे के बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

द्रोणश्च पञ्चविंशत्या कृपः पञ्चाशता शरैः दुर्योधनश्चतुःषष्ट्या शल्यश्च नवभिः शरैः

O king! Droṇa pierced him with twenty-five arrows, Kṛpa with fifty, Duryodhana with sixty-four, Śalya with nine arrows

हे राजा! द्रोण ने पच्चीस, कृप ने पचास, दुर्योधन ने चौंसठ, शल्य ने नौ बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

सैन्धवो नवभिश्चापि शकुनिश्चापि पञ्चभिः विकर्णो दशभिर्भल्लै राजन्विव्याध पाण्डवम्

and Vikarṇa pierced Pāṇḍava with ten broad-headed arrows.

और विकर्ण ने दस चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों से पांडव को घायल कर दिया।

स तैर्विद्धो महेष्वासः समन्तान्निशितैः शरैः न विव्यथे महाबाहुर्भिद्यमान इवाचलः

But though he was struck in every direction with sharp arrows, the mighty-armed and great archer did not suffer and was like a mountain that has been pierced.

परन्तु यद्यपि उस पर हर दिशा में तीखे बाणों से प्रहार किया गया था, फिर भी उस महाबाहु और महान धनुर्धर को कोई कष्ट नहीं हुआ और वह एक टूटे हुए पर्वत के समान हो गया।

स भीष्मं पञ्चविंशत्या कृपं च नवभिः शरैः द्रोणं षष्ट्या नरव्याघ्रो विकर्णं च त्रिभिः शरैः

In return, he struck Bhīṣma with twentyfive arrows, Kṛpa with nine, Droṇa, tiger among men, with sixty arrows, Vikarṇa with three,

बदले में, उसने पच्चीस बाणों से भीष्म को, नौ बाणों से कृप को, साठ बाणों से द्रोण को, मनुष्यों में बाघ को, साठ बाणों से, विकर्ण को तीन बाणों से मारा।

आर्तायनिं त्रिभिर्बाणै राजानं चापि पञ्चभिः प्रत्यविध्यदमेयात्मा किरीटी भरतर्षभ

Ārtāyani with three and the king with five arrows. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Kirīṭī's soul is beyond measure.

तीन बाणों से अर्तायनी और पांच बाणों से राजा। हे भरत वंश में बैल! किरीटी की आत्मा माप से परे है।

तं सात्यकिर्विराटश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः द्रौपदेयाभिमन्युश्च परिवव्रुर्धनंजयम्

Sātyaki, Virāṭa, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Draupadī's sons and Abhimanyu surrounded Dhanañjayā.

सात्यकि, विराट, पार्श्वत धृष्टद्युम्न, द्रौपदी के पुत्रों और अभिमन्यु ने धनंजय को घेर लिया।

ततो द्रोणं महेष्वासं गाङ्गेयस्य प्रिये रतम् अभ्यवर्षत पाञ्चाल्यः संयुक्तः सह सोमकैः

The great archer Droṇa was engaged in ensuring Gāṅgeya's welfare.

महान धनुर्धर द्रोण गांगेय के कल्याण को सुनिश्चित करने में लगे हुए थे।

भीष्मस्तु रथिनां श्रेष्ठस्तूर्णं विव्याध पाण्डवम् अशीत्या निशितैर्बाणैस्ततोऽक्रोशन्त तावकाः

Pāñcāla, supported by the Somaka-s, advanced against him. Bhīṣma, best among charioteers, swiftly pierced Pāṇḍava with eighty sharp arrows.

पंचाल, सोमकों द्वारा समर्थित, उसके विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा। सारथियों में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म ने बड़ी तेजी से अस्सी तीखे बाणों से पाण्डव को घायल कर दिया।

तेषां तु निनदं श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टानां प्रहृष्टवत् प्रविवेश ततो मध्यं रथसिंहः प्रतापवान्

At this, your warriors were extremely delighted. The powerful Dhanañjayā was a lion among charioteers.

इस पर आपके योद्धा अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। महाबली धनन्जय रथियों में सिंह थे।

तेषां तु रथसिंहानां मध्यं प्राप्य धनंजयः चिक्रीड धनुषा राजँल्लक्ष्यं कृत्वा महारथान्

On hearing these roars of applause, Dhanañjayā cheerfully penetrated their midst and having done that, sported with his bow and took aim at those mahāratha-s. He reached the midst of those lions among charioteers.

तालियों की ये गड़गड़ाहट सुनकर, धनंजय खुशी से उनके बीच में घुस गए और ऐसा करने के बाद, अपने धनुष से उन महारथियों पर निशाना साधा। वह रथियों के बीच उन सिंहों के बीच में पहुंच गया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भीष्ममाह जनेश्वरः पीड्यमानं स्वकं सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा पार्थेन संयुगे

On seeing that his own soldiers were tormented by Pārtha in that battle, King Duryodhana, lord of men, spoke to Bhīṣma.

यह देखकर कि युद्ध में अपने ही सैनिक पार्थ द्वारा पीड़ित हो रहे थे, नरश्रेष्ठ राजा दुर्योधन ने भीष्म से बात की।

एष पाण्डुसुतस्तात कृष्णेन सहितो बली यततां सर्वसैन्यानां मूलं नः परिकृन्तति त्वयि जीवति गाङ्गेये द्रोणे च रथिनां वरे

"O father! Pāṇḍu's powerful son is accompanied by Kṛṣṇā. O Gāṅgeya! He is destroying our soldiers and severing our roots, even though you and Droṇa, supreme among charioteers, are alive.

"हे पिता! पांडु के शक्तिशाली पुत्र कृष्ण के साथ हैं। हे गांगेय! वह हमारे सैनिकों को नष्ट कर रहा है और हमारी जड़ें काट रहा है, भले ही आप और सारथियों में सर्वोच्च द्रोण जीवित हैं।

त्वत्कृते ह्येष कर्णोऽपि न्यस्तशस्त्रो महारथः न युध्यति रणे पार्थं हितकामः सदा मम

It is because of you that mahāratha Karṇa has discarded his weapons and does not fight in this battle with Pārtha, though he always has my welfare in mind.

आपके कारण ही महारथी कर्ण ने अपने हथियार त्याग दिये हैं और वह पार्थ के साथ इस युद्ध में नहीं लड़ रहा है, यद्यपि वह सदैव मेरे कल्याण का ध्यान रखता है।

स तथा कुरु गाङ्गेय यथा हन्येत फल्गुनः एवमुक्तस्ततो राजन्पिता देवव्रतस्तव धिक्क्षत्रधर्ममित्युक्त्वा ययौ पार्थरथं प्रति

O Gāṅgeya! Act so that Phālguna may be killed." O king! Having been thus addressed, your father, Devavrata, exclaimed, "Shame on the dharma of kṣatriya-s," and advanced towards Pārtha's chariot.

हे गांगेय! ऐसा कार्य करो कि फाल्गुन मारा जाए।" हे राजा! इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, आपके पिता देवव्रत ने कहा, "क्षत्रिय धर्म को शर्म आनी चाहिए," और पार्थ के रथ की ओर बढ़े।

उभौ श्वेतहयौ राजन्संसक्तौ दृश्य पार्थिवाः सिंहनादान्भृशं चक्रुः शङ्खशब्दांश्च भारत

O king! All the kings saw that these two, both drawn by white horses, were ready to do battle. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They roared like lions and blew on their conch shells.

हे राजा! सभी राजाओं ने देखा कि सफेद घोड़ों पर सवार ये दोनों युद्ध करने के लिए तैयार हैं। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वे सिंहों के समान दहाड़ने लगे और शंख बजाने लगे।

द्रौणिर्दुर्योधनश्चैव विकर्णश्च तवात्मजः परिवार्य रणे भीष्मं स्थिता युद्धाय मारिष

O venerable one! When Bhīṣma was stationed in battle, Droṇa's son, Duryodhana and your son Vikarṇa surrounded him.

हे आदरणीय! जब भीष्म युद्ध में तैनात थे, तो द्रोण के पुत्र दुर्योधन और आपके पुत्र विकर्ण ने उन्हें घेर लिया।

तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे परिवार्य धनंजयम् स्थिता युद्धाय महते ततो युद्धमवर्तत

Similarly, all the Pāṇḍava-s surrounded Dhanañjayā. When they were stationed in battle, a great duel commenced.

इसी प्रकार सभी पांडवों ने धनंजय को घेर लिया। जब वे युद्ध में तैनात थे, तो एक महान द्वंद्व शुरू हुआ।

गाङ्गेयस्तु रणे पार्थमानर्छन्नवभिः शरैः तमर्जुनः प्रत्यविध्यद्दशभिर्मर्मवेधिभिः

In that battle, Gāṅgeya pierced Pārtha with nine arrows and Arjuna pierced him back with ten arrows that penetrated the inner organs.

उस युद्ध में गांगेय ने नौ बाणों से पार्थ को और अर्जुन ने दस बाणों से पार्थ को घायल कर दिया, जो आंतरिक अंगों को भेद गये।

ततः शरसहस्रेण सुप्रयुक्तेन पाण्डवः अर्जुनः समरश्लाघी भीष्मस्यावारयद्दिशः

O Kaurava! Arjuna prided himself on his skills in battle. With a thousand well-directed arrows, Pāṇḍava enveloped Bhīṣma in every direction.

हे कौरव! अर्जुन को युद्ध में अपने कौशल पर गर्व था। पांडव ने एक हजार दिशाहीन बाणों से भीष्म को हर दिशा में घेर लिया।

शरजालं ततस्तत्तु शरजालेन कौरव वारयामास पार्थस्य भीष्मः शांतनवस्तथा

But Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, repulsed Pārtha's net of arrows with his own net of arrows. Both of them were extremely cheerful.

लेकिन शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने अपने ही बाणों के जाल से पार्थ के बाणों के जाल को खदेड़ दिया। वे दोनों अत्यंत प्रसन्नचित्त थे।

उभौ परमसंहृष्टावुभौ युद्धाभिनन्दिनौ निर्विशेषमयुध्येतां कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणौ

Both of them found delight in the battle. They fought against each other, each desiring to counter the other. But neither was superior to the other.

युद्ध में उन दोनों को आनन्द प्राप्त हुआ। वे एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध लड़े, प्रत्येक एक-दूसरे का मुकाबला करने की इच्छा रखते थे। लेकिन कोई भी दूसरे से श्रेष्ठ नहीं था।

भीष्मचापविमुक्तानि शरजालानि संघशः शीर्यमाणान्यदृश्यन्त भिन्नान्यर्जुनसायकैः

The net of arrows released from Bhīṣma's bow were seen to be repulsed by Arjuna's arrows.

भीष्म के धनुष से छूटे बाणों के जाल को अर्जुन के बाणों से खदेड़ते हुए देखा गया।

तथैवार्जुनमुक्तानि शरजालानि भागशः गाङ्गेयशरनुन्नानि न्यपतन्त महीतले

In that fashion, the nets of arrows released from Arjuna's bow were all cut down by Gāṅgeya's arrows and fell down on the ground.

उस प्रकार, अर्जुन के धनुष से छूटे हुए बाणों के सभी जाल गांगेय के बाणों से कट गये और भूमि पर गिर गये।

अर्जुनः पञ्चविंशत्या भीष्ममार्च्छच्छितैः शरैः भीष्मोऽपि समरे पार्थं विव्याध त्रिंशता शरैः

Arjuna pierced Bhīṣma with twenty-five sharp arrows. And in that battle, Bhīṣma pierced Pārtha with thirty arrows.

अर्जुन ने पच्चीस तीखे बाणों से भीष्म को घायल कर दिया। और उस युद्ध में भीष्म ने तीस बाणों से पार्थ को घायल कर दिया।

अन्योन्यस्य हयान्विद्ध्वा ध्वजौ च सुमहाबलौ रथेषां रथचक्रे च चिक्रीडतुररिंदमौ

Those extremely strong ones wounded each other's horses, pierced the standards and struck the chariots and wheels of the chariots.

उन अत्यंत बलवानों ने एक-दूसरे के घोड़ों को घायल कर दिया, ध्वजों को छेद डाला और रथों तथा रथों के पहियों पर प्रहार किया।

ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः वासुदेवं त्रिभिर्बाणैराजघान स्तनान्तरे

The destroyers of enemies seemed to be playing. O great king! Bhīṣma, supreme among the wielders of weapons, was enraged.

शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले मानो खेल रहे थे। हे महान राजा! शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म क्रोधित हो गये।

भीष्मचापच्युतैर्बाणैर्निर्विद्धो मधुसूदनः विरराज रणे राजन्सपुष्प इव किंशुकः

With three arrows, he pierced Vāsudeva between the breasts. O king! Pierced by Bhīṣma's arrows, Acyuta Madhusūdana was resplendent in that battle, like a blossoming kiṃśuka.

उसने तीन बाणों से वासुदेव की छाती के बीच से छेद कर दिया। हे राजा! भीष्म के बाणों से घायल होकर अच्युत मधुसूदन उस युद्ध में खिले हुए किंशुक के समान शोभा पा रहे थे।

ततोऽर्जुनो भृशं क्रुद्धो निर्विद्धं प्रेक्ष्य माधवम् गाङ्गेयसारथिं संख्ये निर्बिभेद त्रिभिः शरैः

On seeing Mādhava thus pierced, Arjuna became extremely angry. In that encounter, he pierced Gāṅgeya's charioteer with three arrows.

माधव को इस प्रकार घायल देखकर अर्जुन अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गये। उस मुठभेड़ में, उन्होंने गांगेय के सारथी को तीन बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

यतमानौ तु तौ वीरावन्योन्यस्य वधं प्रति नाशक्नुतां तदान्योन्यमभिसंधातुमाहवे

In that encounter, the brave ones took aim against each other and endeavoured to kill each other, but did not succeed.

उस मुठभेड़ में, बहादुरों ने एक-दूसरे पर निशाना साधा और एक-दूसरे को मारने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन सफल नहीं हुए।

मण्डलानि विचित्राणि गतप्रत्यागतानि च अदर्शयेतां बहुधा सूतसामर्थ्यलाघवात्

The chariots advanced and retreated, traversing wonderful circles. Both charioteers displayed their skill and dexterity in many ways.

अद्भुत वृत्तों को पार करते हुए रथ आगे बढ़े और पीछे हट गए। दोनों सारथियों ने अनेक प्रकार से अपनी कुशलता एवं निपुणता का प्रदर्शन किया।

अन्तरं च प्रहारेषु तर्कयन्तौ महारथौ राजन्नन्तरमार्गस्थौ स्थितावास्तां मुहुर्मुहुः

O king! In seeking their objective, the mahāratha-s repeatedly changed their positions and adopted different paths, so that they could strike each other.

हे राजा! अपने उद्देश्य की तलाश में, महारथियों ने बार-बार अपनी स्थिति बदली और अलग-अलग रास्ते अपनाए, ताकि वे एक-दूसरे पर हमला कर सकें।

उभौ सिंहरवोन्मिश्रं शङ्खशब्दं प्रचक्रतुः तथैव चापनिर्घोषं चक्रतुस्तौ महारथौ

Both of them roared like lions and blew on their conch shells. Loud noises could be heard as the mahāratha-s twanged their bows.

वे दोनों सिंह के समान दहाड़ने लगे और शंख बजाने लगे। जैसे ही महारथियों ने अपने धनुषों को घुमाया, जोर से शोर सुना जा सकता था।

तयोः शङ्खप्रणादेन रथनेमिस्वनेन च दारिता सहसा भूमिश्चकम्प च ननाद च

There was the sound of conch shells and roars from the axles of the chariots. The earth began to tremble, as if there was an earthquake underneath.

रथों की धुरों से शंख और गर्जना की आवाज आ रही थी। धरती कांपने लगी, मानो नीचे भूकंप आ गया हो।

न तयोरन्तरं कश्चिद्ददृशे भरतर्षभ बलिनौ समरे शूरावन्योन्यसदृशावुभौ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! No one could detect a weakness in either of them. Both of them were powerful and valiant in battle. Each was equal to the other.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! कोई भी उनमें से किसी में भी कमजोरी नहीं पहचान सका। वे दोनों युद्ध में शक्तिशाली और वीर थे। प्रत्येक दूसरे के बराबर था।

चिह्नमात्रेण भीष्मं तु प्रजज्ञुस्तत्र कौरवाः तथा पाण्डुसुताः पार्थं चिह्नमात्रेण जज्ञिरे

It was only through the signs that the Kaurava-s could approach Bhīṣma and also through the signs that the sons of Pāṇḍu could approach Pārtha.

संकेतों के माध्यम से ही कौरव भीष्म तक पहुंच सकते थे और संकेतों के माध्यम से ही पांडु के पुत्र पार्थ के पास पहुंच सकते थे।

तयोर्नृवरयो राजन्दृश्य तादृक्पराक्रमम् विस्मयं सर्वभूतानि जग्मुर्भारत संयुगे

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On witnessing the valour displayed by these best of men in the battle, all the beings were struck with wonder.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! युद्ध में इन श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों द्वारा प्रदर्शित वीरता को देखकर सभी प्राणी आश्चर्यचकित रह गये।

न तयोर्विवरं कश्चिद्रणे पश्यति भारत धर्मे स्थितस्य हि यथा न कश्चिद्वृजिनं क्वचित्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In that battle, no weakness was discernible in either of the two, like those established in dharma. Nor could any deceit be seen.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस युद्ध में, दोनों में से किसी में भी धर्म में स्थापित लोगों की तरह कोई कमज़ोरी नज़र नहीं आई। न ही कोई छल देखने को मिला.

उभौ हि शरजालेन तावदृश्यौ बभूवतुः प्रकाशौ च पुनस्तूर्णं बभूवतुरुभौ रणे

In that battle, both became invisible because of the nets of arrows and suddenly became visible again.

उस युद्ध में दोनों बाणों के जाल के कारण अदृश्य हो गये और अचानक फिर दृश्यमान हो गये।

तत्र देवाः सगन्धर्वाश्चारणाश्च सहर्षिभिः अन्योन्यं प्रत्यभाषन्त तयोर्दृष्ट्वा पराक्रमम्

On witnessing the valour, the gods, together with the gāndharva-s, the cāraṇa-s and the riṣi-s, spoke to each other.

वीरता देखकर देवताओं, गंधर्वों, चारणों और ऋषियों ने आपस में बातें कीं।

न शक्यौ युधि संरब्धौ जेतुमेतौ महारथौ सदेवासुरगन्धर्वैर्लोकैरपि कथंचन

"When they are enraged, neither of these mahāratha-s is capable of being vanquished in battle, even by the gods, the āsura-s, the gāndharva-s and all the worlds.

"जब वे क्रोधित होते हैं, तो इन महारथियों में से कोई भी युद्ध में पराजित होने में सक्षम नहीं होता है, यहां तक ​​कि देवताओं, असुरों, गंधर्वों और सभी लोकों द्वारा भी।

आश्चर्यभूतं लोकेषु युद्धमेतन्महाद्भुतम् नैतादृशानि युद्धानि भविष्यन्ति कथंचन

The worlds will regard this extremely marvellous battle as wonderful. Such a battle will never take place again.

इस अत्यंत अद्भुत युद्ध को संसार के लोग अद्भुत मानेंगे। ऐसी लड़ाई फिर कभी नहीं होगी.

नापि शक्यो रणे जेतुं भीष्मः पार्थेन धीमता सधनुश्च रथस्थश्च प्रवपन्सायकान्रणे

In the encounter, Bhīṣma is incapable of being vanquished by the intelligent Pārtha, even though he uses his bow, chariot, horses and arrows in the battle.

मुठभेड़ में, भीष्म बुद्धिमान पार्थ द्वारा पराजित होने में असमर्थ हैं, भले ही वह युद्ध में अपने धनुष, रथ, घोड़ों और तीरों का उपयोग करते हैं।

तथैव पाण्डवं युद्धे देवैरपि दुरासदम् न विजेतुं रणे भीष्म उत्सहेत धनुर्धरम्

In that fashion, in a battle, even the gods cannot conquer Pāṇḍava. Though he makes every endeavour, Bhīṣma cannot vanquish that archer in an encounter."

उस प्रकार, युद्ध में देवता भी पांडवों पर विजय नहीं पा सकते। यद्यपि भीष्म हर संभव प्रयास करते हैं, फिर भी भीष्म उस धनुर्धर को मुठभेड़ में नहीं हरा सकते।"

इति स्म वाचः श्रूयन्ते प्रोच्चरन्त्यस्ततस्ततः गाङ्गेयार्जुनयोः संख्ये स्तवयुक्ता विशां पते

O lord of the earth! We heard these words of praise spoken about both Gāṅgeya and Arjuna in that battle.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हमने उस युद्ध में गांगेय और अर्जुन दोनों के बारे में प्रशंसा के ये शब्द सुने थे।

त्वदीयास्तु ततो योधाः पाण्डवेयाश्च भारत अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुस्तयोस्तत्र पराक्रमे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! While they fought, your warriors and those of the Pāṇḍaveya-s, killed each other in the battle.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब वे युद्ध कर रहे थे, आपके और पाण्डवों के योद्धाओं ने युद्ध में एक-दूसरे को मार डाला।

शितधारैस्तथा खड्गैर्विमलैश्च परश्वधैः शरैरन्यैश्च बहुभिः शस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्युधि उभयोः सेनयोर्वीरा न्यकृन्तन्त परस्परम्

They valiantly used polished and sharp swords, polished battleaxes, many kinds of arrows and diverse types of weapons and other arms. The brave ones on either side killed one another.

उन्होंने बहादुरी से पॉलिश और तेज तलवारें, पॉलिश की गई कुल्हाड़ी, कई प्रकार के तीर और विभिन्न प्रकार के हथियारों और अन्य हथियारों का इस्तेमाल किया। दोनों ओर के वीरों ने एक दूसरे को मार डाला।

वर्तमाने तथा घोरे तस्मिन्युद्धे सुदारुणे द्रोणपाञ्चाल्ययो राजन्महानासीत्समागमः

as that extremely terrible battle continued. O king! There was a great encounter between Droṇa and Pāñcāla.

जैसे ही वह अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध जारी रहा। हे राजा! द्रोण और पंचाल के बीच एक महान मुठभेड़ हुई।
