Sañjaya said: The powerful Dhanañjayā was breathing like a snake that had been trodden on with the foot. He raised his arrows. In that battle, he continuously used arrows to slice down the bows of those mahāratha-s.
संजय ने कहा: शक्तिशाली धनंजय पैर से कुचले गए सांप की तरह सांस ले रहा था। उसने अपने तीर उठाये। उस युद्ध में उन्होंने उन महारथियों के धनुषों को काटने के लिए लगातार बाणों का प्रयोग किया।
In that battle, he instantly sliced down the bows of those valiant kings. The great-souled one simultaneously pierced them with arrows, wishing to slay those illustrious ones.
उस युद्ध में उन्होंने तुरन्त ही उन वीर राजाओं के धनुष काट दिये। उन महापुरुषों को मार डालने की इच्छा से उन महात्मा ने एक साथ ही बाणों से उन्हें बींध डाला।
O king! Some of those kings fell down on the ground, drenched in blood. They were oppressed by Śākra's son. Their bodies were mangled and their heads fell down. Some died because their armour and their bodies were penetrated.
हे राजा! उनमें से कुछ राजा खून से लथपथ होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े। शक्र के पुत्र द्वारा उन पर अत्याचार किया गया। उनके शरीर क्षत-विक्षत थे और सिर नीचे गिर गये थे। कुछ की मृत्यु हो गई क्योंकि उनके कवच और उनके शरीर को भेद दिया गया था।
They were overcome by Pārtha's strength and resorted to the ground. They assumed wonderful forms and were simultaneously destroyed. On seeing that those warriors and princes had perished, the king of Trigarta quickly advanced towards Pārtha.
वे पार्थ की शक्ति से पराजित हो गये और जमीन पर गिर पड़े। उन्होंने अद्भुत रूप धारण किये और साथ ही नष्ट भी हो गये। यह देखकर कि वे योद्धा और राजकुमार नष्ट हो गये, त्रिगर्त के राजा शीघ्रता से पार्थ की ओर बढ़े।
Thirty-two charioteers, who were protecting from the rear, were also with him. They surrounded Pārtha and drew their bows with a loud noise. They showered him with a great rain of arrows, like clouds pouring down rain on a mountain.
पीछे से रक्षा करने वाले बत्तीस सारथी भी उनके साथ थे। उन्होंने पार्थ को घेर लिया और बड़े शब्द के साथ धनुष तान लिया। उन्होंने उस पर बाणों की बड़ी वर्षा की, जैसे बादल पर्वत पर वर्षा करते हैं।
In that encounter, Dhanañjayā was oppressed by that shower of arrows and anger was engendered in him. He used sixty arrows that had been washed in oil and killed the ones who had been protecting from the rear.
उस मुठभेड़ में, बाणों की वर्षा से धनंजय पर अत्याचार हुआ और उनमें क्रोध उत्पन्न हो गया। उसने तेल से धोये हुए साठ बाणों का प्रयोग किया और पीछे से रक्षा करने वालों को मार डाला।
The king of Trigarta saw that the ranks of his mahāratha relatives had been killed. He swiftly advanced to kill Pārtha in battle, with the lords of the earth following him.
त्रिगर्त के राजा ने देखा कि उनके महारथ रिश्तेदार मारे गये थे। वह युद्ध में पार्थ को मारने के लिए तेजी से आगे बढ़ा, पृथ्वी के राजा उसके पीछे चल रहे थे।
On seeing that they were advancing against Dhanañjayā, foremost among the wielders of weapons, with Śikhaṇḍī at the forefront, they advanced to protect Arjuna's chariot. They raised sharp weapons in their hands.
यह देखकर कि वे शस्त्रधारियों में अग्रणी, शिखंडी को सबसे आगे लेकर, धनंजय के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ रहे हैं, वे अर्जुन के रथ की रक्षा के लिए आगे बढ़े। उन्होंने हाथों में धारदार हथियार उठाये.
Pārtha also saw that those brave ones were advancing against him, together with the king of Trigarta. In that battle, he pierced them with sharp arrows shot from the bow Gāṇḍīva. The skilled warrior wished to fight with Bhīṣma and saw Duryodhana and Saindhava and the other kings.
पार्थ ने यह भी देखा कि वे शूरवीर त्रिगर्तराज के साथ मिलकर मेरे विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ रहे हैं। उस युद्ध में उसने गाण्डीव धनुष से छोड़े गये तीखे बाणों से उन्हें घायल कर दिया। कुशल योद्धा भीष्म से युद्ध करना चाहता था और उसने दुर्योधन, सैंधव तथा अन्य राजाओं को देखा।
For a brief moment, the brave Jiṣṇu used his strength to counter them. But then the infinitely valorous and greatly energetic one avoided those kings, Jayadratha and the other kings. With a bow and arrow in his hand, the spirited one, terrible in his strength, went to where Gāṅgeya was.
एक संक्षिप्त क्षण के लिए, बहादुर जिष्णु ने उनका मुकाबला करने के लिए अपनी ताकत का इस्तेमाल किया। लेकिन तब असीम वीर और अत्यधिक ऊर्जावान उन राजाओं, जयद्रथ और अन्य राजाओं से बचते रहे। अपने हाथ में धनुष और बाण लेकर, वह उत्साही व्यक्ति, जो अपनी ताकत में भयानक था, वहां गया जहां गांगेय था।
The great-souled Yudhiṣṭhira, terrible in his strength, also advanced swiftly, his anger having been excited. In that encounter, he avoided the lord of Madra, whose deeds were infinite and who had been assigned as his share. To do battle, with the sons of Mādrī and Bhīmasena, he went to the spot where Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, was stationed.
महाबली युधिष्ठिर भी क्रोध से उत्तेजित होकर तेजी से आगे बढ़े। उस मुठभेड़ में, उन्होंने मद्र के स्वामी से परहेज किया, जिनके कर्म अनंत थे और जिन्हें उनके हिस्से के रूप में सौंपा गया था। माद्री और भीमसेन के पुत्रों के साथ युद्ध करने के लिए, वह उस स्थान पर गए जहाँ शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म तैनात थे।

Gāṅga's son was wonderful in battle. He was set upon by all the mahāratha-s together. But Śāntanu's great-souled son was not distracted by all the assembled sons of Pāṇḍu.
गंगा का पुत्र युद्ध में अद्भुत था। सभी महारथियों ने एक साथ उस पर आक्रमण किया था। लेकिन शांतनु के महाबली पुत्र पांडु के सभी पुत्रों से विचलित नहीं हुए।
King Jayadratha was terrible in his valour and spirited. He was a warrior who was unwavering in his aim. He advanced against those mahāratha-s and sliced down their bows with his supreme bow.
राजा जयद्रथ वीरता और पराक्रम में भयानक था। वह एक ऐसा योद्धा था जो अपने लक्ष्य पर अटल था। वह उन महारथियों के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े और अपने सर्वोच्च धनुष से उनके धनुषों को काट डाला।
The great-souled Duryodhana was overcome with the poison of anger. His wrath having been ignited, he used arrows that were like fire to fight with Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, the twins and Pārtha.
महाबली दुर्योधन क्रोध के विष से वशीभूत हो गया था। उनका क्रोध भड़क उठा, उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर, भीमसेन, जुड़वाँ भाइयों और पार्थ से लड़ने के लिए अग्नि के समान बाणों का प्रयोग किया।
They were also pierced with arrows shot by Kṛpa, Śalya, Śala and the lord Citrasenā and their anger increased, like the gods when they confronted the assembled daitya-s.
वे भी कृपा, शल्य, शाल और भगवान चित्रसेना द्वारा छोड़े गए बाणों से घायल हो गए थे और उनका क्रोध देवताओं की तरह बढ़ गया था, जब उन्होंने एकत्रित दैत्यों का सामना किया था।
Śikhaṇḍī's weapon had been sliced down by the king who was Śāntanu's son. On seeing that he was running away in that battle, the great-souled Ajātaśatru became wrathful and spoke these words of anger to Śikhaṇḍī.
शांतनु के पुत्र राजा ने शिखंडी के हथियार को काट दिया था। यह देखकर कि वह उस युद्ध में भाग रहा है, महाबली अजातशत्रु क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने शिखंडी से क्रोध के ये शब्द कहे।
"You spoke these words to me, in the presence of your father - "Using arrows that are clear and have the complexion of the sun, I will kill Bhīṣma, who is great in his vows. I say this truthfully."
"तुमने अपने पिता की उपस्थिति में मुझसे ये शब्द कहे - "मैं स्पष्ट और सूर्य के समान रंग वाले बाणों का उपयोग करके भीष्म को मार डालूँगा, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में महान थे। मैं यह बात सच कहता हूं।”

त्वया न चैनां सफलां करोषि; देवव्रतं यन्न निहंसि युद्धे
मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञो भव मा नृवीर; रक्षस्व धर्मं च कुलं यशश्च
This was the pledge you took and you are not making it come true. O brave one among men! You have become false in your oath. Protect your dharma and the fame of your lineage.
यह तो तुमने प्रतिज्ञा की थी और तुम उसे पूरा नहीं कर रहे हो। हे मनुष्यों में वीर! तुम अपनी शपथ में झूठे हो गये हो। अपने धर्म और वंश की कीर्ति की रक्षा करो।
Behold. Bhīṣma is fighting with terrible force. He is tormenting the masses of my soldiers. The net of his arrows is fierce in its energy. Like Death himself, he is killing everything in an instant.
देखो. भीष्म भयानक ताकत से लड़ रहे हैं। वह मेरे सैनिकों की जनता पर अत्याचार कर रहा है। उसके बाणों का जाल अपनी ऊर्जा में भयंकर है। स्वयं मृत्यु की तरह, वह एक पल में सब कुछ खत्म कर रहा है।
Your bow has been sliced down by the king who is Śāntanu's son. You have been vanquished and are running away from the field of battle. You are abandoning your relatives and your brothers. Where are you going! This is not becoming of you.
आपका धनुष शांतनु के पुत्र राजा ने काट दिया है। तुम परास्त हो गये हो और युद्धभूमि से भाग रहे हो। तुम अपने सम्बन्धियों और भाइयों को त्याग रहे हो। आप कहां जा रहे हैं! यह आपसे नहीं बन रहा है.

दृष्ट्वा हि भीष्मं तमनन्तवीर्यं; भग्नं च सैन्यं द्रवमाणमेवम्
भीतोऽसि नूनं द्रुपदस्य पुत्र; तथा हि ते मुखवर्णोऽप्रहृष्टः
Bhīṣma is infinite in his valour. On seeing him, our soldiers are routed and are fleeing. O Drupada's son! You are certainly frightened. The complexion of your face is distressed.
भीष्म अपनी वीरता में अनंत हैं। उसे देखकर हमारे सैनिक हतोत्साहित हो भाग रहे हैं। हे द्रुपद पुत्र! आप निश्चित रूप से डरे हुए हैं. आपके चेहरे का रंग ख़राब है.

आज्ञायमानेऽपि धनंजयेन; महाहवे संप्रसक्ते नृवीर
कथं हि भीष्मात्प्रथितः पृथिव्यां; भयं त्वमद्य प्रकरोषि वीर
O brave one among men! Honouring his commands, Dhanañjayā is engaged in this great battle. O brave one! You are famous on earth! Why are you now frightened of Bhīṣma?"
हे मनुष्यों में वीर! उनकी आज्ञा का सम्मान करते हुए, धनंजय इस महान युद्ध में लगे हुए हैं। हे वीर! आप पृथ्वी पर प्रसिद्ध हैं! अब आप भीष्म से क्यों भयभीत हैं?"
Dharmarāja's words were harsh. But he heard them and perceived them to be full of sound reason. O king! Having honoured these instructions, the great-souled one swiftly set about the task of killing Bhīṣma.
धर्मराज के शब्द कठोर थे। परन्तु उसने उन्हें सुना और पाया कि वे ठोस तर्क से परिपूर्ण हैं। हे राजा! इन निर्देशों का सम्मान करते हुए, महात्मा ने तेजी से भीष्म को मारने का काम शुरू कर दिया।
Śikhaṇḍī advanced towards Bhīṣma with great force. Śalya countered him with weapons that were terrible and extremely difficult to resist.
शिखंडी बड़ी ताकत से भीष्म की ओर बढ़ा। शल्य ने उसका मुकाबला उन हथियारों से किया जो भयानक थे और जिनका प्रतिरोध करना अत्यंत कठिन था।

स चापि दृष्ट्वा समुदीर्यमाण;मस्त्रं युगान्ताग्निसमप्रभावम्
नासौ व्यमुह्यद्द्रुपदस्य पुत्रो; राजन्महेन्द्रप्रतिमप्रभावः
O king! However, Drupada's son was like Indra in his power. He saw those weapons, which were as powerful as the fire at the destruction of a yuga, and was not confounded at all.
हे राजा! हालाँकि, द्रुपद का पुत्र अपनी शक्ति में इंद्र के समान था। उन्होंने उन अस्त्र-शस्त्रों को देखा, जो एक युग के विनाश की आग के समान शक्तिशाली थे और बिल्कुल भी भ्रमित नहीं थे।
The great archer countered those weapons with his own arrows. To counter them, Śikhaṇḍī took up another terrible weapon known as Vāruṇa. The gods stationed in the firmament and the sky saw those weapons repulsed by this weapon.

On seeing that Yudhiṣṭhira was overcome with fear and had cast aside his bow and arrows in that battle, Bhīmasena grabbed a club and advanced on foot against Jayadratha.
यह देखकर कि युद्ध में युधिष्ठिर भय से व्याकुल हो गये थे और उन्होंने अपना धनुष-बाण त्याग दिया था, भीमसेन ने एक गदा पकड़ ली और पैदल ही जयद्रथ के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े।
On seeing Bhīmasena advance with great speed with the club, Jayadratha pierced him from every direction with five hundred sharp and terrible arrows that were like Yāma's staff.
भीमसेन को गदा लेकर बड़े वेग से आगे बढ़ते देख जयद्रथ ने यम की लाठी के समान पाँच सौ तीखे और भयानक बाणों से उन्हें हर दिशा से घायल कर दिया।

अचिन्तयित्वा स शरांस्तरस्वी; वृकोदरः क्रोधपरीतचेताः
जघान वाहान्समरे समस्ता;नारट्टजान्सिन्धुराजस्य संख्ये
But the swift Vṛkodara, his heart full of rage, paid no attention to these arrows. In that battle, he slew the mounts which bore the king of Sindhu in that encounter, ones that had been born in Āraṭṭa.
लेकिन क्रोध से भरे हृदय वाले तेज वृकोदर ने इन बाणों पर कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया। उस लड़ाई में, उसने उन घुड़सवारों को मार डाला जो उस मुठभेड़ में सिंधु के राजा से थे, जो अराट में पैदा हुए थे।
Your son was unrivalled in his prowess and was like the king of the gods. On seeing Bhīmasena, he swiftly advanced on his chariot to kill him, with his weapons raised.

समुद्यतां तां यमदण्डकल्पां; दृष्ट्वा गदां ते कुरवः समन्तात्
Bhīmā suddenly roared. Uttering threats, he rushed towards him with a club. In every direction, the Kuru-s saw this upraised club, like Yāma's staff.
भीम अचानक दहाड़ उठा. धमकी देते हुए वह एक डंडा लेकर उसकी ओर दौड़ा। हर दिशा में कुरु ने यम की लाठी की तरह इस उठे हुए गदा को देखा।
All of them wished to avoid the descent of the terrible club and abandoned your son. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There was a tumultuous and extremely terrible melee and they were all confounded.
उन सभी ने भयानक गदा के अवतरण से बचने की कामना की और आपके पुत्र को त्याग दिया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वहाँ एक उथल-पुथल और बेहद भयानक हाथापाई हुई और वे सभी भ्रमित हो गए।

रथं समुत्सृज्य पदातिराजौ; प्रगृह्य खड्गं विमलं च चर्म
अवप्लुतः सिंह इवाचलाग्रा;ज्जगाम चान्यं भुवि भूमिदेशम्
But despite seeing the great club descend, Citrasenā did not lose his senses. He discarded his chariot and resorted to fighting on foot, grasping a polished sword and shield. He leapt down, like a lion from the peak of a mountain, and resorted to the face of the earth.
लेकिन महान गदा को उतरते देखने के बावजूद चित्रसेना ने अपनी चेतना नहीं खोई। उन्होंने अपना रथ त्याग दिया और एक पॉलिश तलवार और ढाल लेकर पैदल ही लड़ने लगे। वह शेर की तरह पहाड़ की चोटी से नीचे कूदा और धरती पर आ गिरा।
In that battle, the club descended on the colourful chariot and killed the horses and the charioteer. It then fell down on the ground, like a flaming and giant meteor that has been dislodged from the sky and has fallen down.
उस युद्ध में, गदा रंगीन रथ पर उतरी और घोड़ों तथा सारथी को मार डाला। फिर वह एक ज्वलंत और विशाल उल्का की तरह जमीन पर गिर पड़ा, जो आकाश से उखड़कर नीचे गिर गया हो।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On witnessing the extraordinary, extremely great and unrivalled feat accomplished by your son, all the soldiers were delighted and honoured him. They uttered a roar in every direction.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके पुत्र द्वारा किये गये असाधारण, अत्यंत महान और अद्वितीय पराक्रम को देखकर सभी सैनिक प्रसन्न हुए और उनका सम्मान किया। उन्होंने हर दिशा में गर्जना की।
