संजय उवाच ततो दुर्योधनो राजा लोहितायति भास्करे संग्रामरभसो भीमं हन्तुकामोऽभ्यधावत

Sañjaya said: The sun assumed a reddish tinge. Desiring victory and wishing to kill him, King Duryodhana attacked Bhīmā.

संजय ने कहा: सूर्य ने लाल रंग धारण कर लिया। विजय की इच्छा से और उसे मारने की इच्छा से, राजा दुर्योधन ने भीम पर हमला किया।

तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य नृवीरं दृढवैरिणम् भीमसेनः सुसंक्रुद्ध इदं वचनमब्रवीत्

On seeing that brave one amongst men, firm in his enmity, advance towards him, Bhīmasena was extremely enraged and spoke these words.

मनुष्यों में उस वीर को अपनी शत्रुता पर दृढ़ देखकर अपनी ओर बढ़ते देख भीमसेन अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने ये शब्द कहे।

अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो वर्षपूगाभिकाङ्क्षितः अद्य त्वां निहनिष्यामि यदि नोत्सृजसे रणम्

"I have desired this moment for many years and the time has now arrived. If you do not flee from the battle, I will kill you today.

"मैं कई वर्षों से इस क्षण की कामना कर रहा था और अब वह समय आ गया है। यदि तुम युद्ध से नहीं भागोगे तो मैं आज तुम्हें मार डालूँगा।"

अद्य कुन्त्याः परिक्लेशं वनवासं च कृत्स्नशः द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं प्रणोत्स्यामि हते त्वयि

I will dispel the misery of Kuntī today and the difficulties we faced during our exile in the forest. I will kill you and dispel Draupadī's woes.

मैं आज कुंती का दुख और वनवास के दौरान हमें जो कठिनाइयाँ झेलनी पड़ीं, उन्हें दूर कर दूँगा। मैं तुम्हें मार डालूँगा और द्रौपदी के संकट दूर कर दूँगा।

यत्त्वं दुरोदरो भूत्वा पाण्डवानवमन्यसे तस्य पापस्य गान्धारे पश्य व्यसनमागतम्

At the time of gambling with the dice, you insulted the Pāṇḍava-s. O Gāndhārī's son! Witness the calamity that has befallen you because of your evil act.

पासों से जुआ खेलते समय तुमने पांडवों का अपमान किया। हे गांधारी पुत्र! उस विपत्ति का साक्षी बनो जो तुम्हारे बुरे कृत्य के कारण तुम पर आई है।

कर्णस्य मतमाज्ञाय सौबलस्य च यत्पुरा अचिन्त्य पाण्डवान्कामाद्यथेष्टं कृतवानसि

In earlier times, you relied on the views of Karṇa and Saubala. You did not think of the Pāṇḍava-s and did as you wished.

पहले के समय में, आप कर्ण और सौबल के विचारों पर भरोसा करते थे। आपने पांडवों के बारे में नहीं सोचा और जैसा आप चाहते थे वैसा ही किया।

याचमानं च यन्मोहाद्दाशार्हमवमन्यसे उलूकस्य समादेशं यद्ददासि च हृष्टवत्

When Dāśārha came as a supplicant, you disregarded him because of your delusion. In delight, you gave Ulūka a message to deliver to us.

जब दशार्ह याचक बनकर आये तो तुमने मोह के कारण उनकी उपेक्षा कर दी। प्रसन्न होकर, आपने उलूका को हमें देने के लिए एक संदेश दिया।

अद्य त्वा निहनिष्यामि सानुबन्धं सबान्धवम् समीकरिष्ये तत्पापं यत्पुरा कृतवानसि

I will kill you today, with your relatives and your kin. I will avenge all the evil deeds you have committed earlier."

मैं आज तुझे तेरे बन्धु-बान्धवों सहित मार डालूँगा। मैं तुम्हारे पहले के सभी बुरे कर्मों का बदला लूँगा।”

एवमुक्त्वा धनुर्घोरं विकृष्योद्भ्राम्य चासकृत् समादाय शरान्घोरान्महाशनिसमप्रभान्

Having said this, he repeatedly stretched his terrible bow. He took up terrible arrows that were as radiant as the great vajra.

ऐसा कहकर उसने बार-बार अपना भयानक धनुष बढ़ाया। उन्होंने महान वज्र के समान तेजस्वी भयानक बाण उठाये।

षड्विंशत्तरसा क्रुद्धो मुमोचाशु सुयोधने ज्वलिताग्निशिखाकारान्वज्रकल्पानजिह्मगान्

In great anger, he swiftly shot twenty-six arrows at Suyodhana. They were flaming, with crests like fire, and they had tongues like the vajra.

अत्यंत क्रोध में आकर उसने सुयोधन पर तेजी से छब्बीस बाण छोड़े। वे अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित, शिखाओं वाले और वज्र के समान जिह्वा वाले थे।

ततोऽस्य कार्मुकं द्वाभ्यां सूतं द्वाभ्यां च विव्यधे चतुर्भिरश्वाञ्जवनाननयद्यमसादनम्

After that, he struck his bow with two and his charioteer with another two. With four arrows, he despatched his swift horses to Yāma's abode.

उसके बाद, उसने दो से अपने धनुष पर और दो से अपने सारथी पर प्रहार किया। उन्होंने चार बाणों से अपने तेज घोड़ों को यम के निवास पर भेज दिया।

द्वाभ्यां च सुविकृष्टाभ्यां शराभ्यामरिमर्दनः छत्रं चिच्छेद समरे राज्ञस्तस्य रथोत्तमात्

The scorcher of enemies then used two arrows that were released with great force. With these, he sliced down the king's umbrella from his supreme chariot.

तब शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले ने बड़े बल से छोड़े गये दो बाणों का प्रयोग किया। इनसे उसने राजा के छत्र को उसके सर्वोच्च रथ से काट डाला।

त्रिभिश्च तस्य चिच्छेद ज्वलन्तं ध्वजमुत्तमम् छित्त्वा तं च ननादोच्चैस्तव पुत्रस्य पश्यतः

With three more, he sliced down the flaming and supreme standard. Having sliced it down, while your son looked on, he emitted a loud roar.

तीन और के साथ, उसने ज्वलंत और सर्वोच्च मानक को नष्ट कर दिया। इसे काटने के बाद, जब आपके बेटे ने देखा, तो उसने जोर से दहाड़ लगाई।

रथाच्च स ध्वजः श्रीमान्नानारत्नविभूषितः पपात सहसा भूमिं विद्युज्जलधरादिव

That handsome standard, decorated with many gems, fell down from the chariot. It suddenly fell down on the ground, like lightning from the clouds.

अनेक रत्नों से विभूषित वह सुन्दर ध्वजा रथ से नीचे गिर पड़ी। वह अचानक बादलों से बिजली की तरह जमीन पर गिर पड़ी।

ज्वलन्तं सूर्यसंकाशं नागं मणिमयं शुभम् ध्वजं कुरुपतेश्छिन्नं ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः

It was resplendent like the sun and was beautiful with jewels. It was marked with the sign of an elephant. All the kings saw that the standard of the lord of the Kuru-s had been brought down.

वह सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान तथा रत्नों से सुशोभित था। उस पर हाथी का चिन्ह अंकित था। सभी राजाओं ने देखा कि कुरुवंश के स्वामी का स्तर गिरा दिया गया है।

अथैनं दशभिर्बाणैस्तोत्त्रैरिव महागजम् आजघान रणे भीमः स्मयन्निव महारथः

In that battle, as if he was smiling, Bhīmā then used ten arrows to slay his mighty elephant.

उस युद्ध में, मानो वह मुस्कुरा रहा हो, तब भीम ने उसके शक्तिशाली हाथी को मारने के लिए दस बाणों का उपयोग किया।

ततस्तु राजा सिन्धूनां रथश्रेष्ठो जयद्रथः दुर्योधनस्य जग्राह पार्ष्णिं सत्पुरुषोचिताम्

At this, Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, foremost among rāṭha-s, stationed himself on Duryodhana's flank, supported by many good warriors.

इस पर, सिंधु के राजा जयद्रथ, जो रथों में अग्रणी थे, कई अच्छे योद्धाओं द्वारा समर्थित, दुर्योधन के पार्श्व में तैनात हो गए।

कृपश्च रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कौरव्यममितौजसम् आरोपयद्रथं राजन्दुर्योधनममर्षणम्

O king! Kṛpa, foremost among rāṭha-s, picked up the infinitely energetic Kauravya, the intolerant Duryodhana, on his own chariot.

हे राजा! रथियों में अग्रणी कृप ने असीम ऊर्जावान कौरव्य, असहिष्णु दुर्योधन को अपने रथ पर बैठा लिया।

स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो भीमसेनेन संयुगे निषसाद रथोपस्थे राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा

He had been deeply pierced and wounded in that battle with Bhīmasena. O king! Duryodhana sat down on the floor of the chariot.

भीमसेन के साथ उस युद्ध में वह बुरी तरह घायल हो गया था। हे राजा! दुर्योधन रथ के फर्श पर बैठ गया।

परिवार्य ततो भीमं हन्तुकामो जयद्रथः रथैरनेकसाहस्रैर्भीमस्यावारयद्दिशः

Desiring to kill Bhīmā, Jayadratha surrounded him from all sides. There were many thousand chariots on all of Bhīmā's directions.

भीम को मारने की इच्छा से जयद्रथ ने उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया। भीम की सभी दिशाओं में कई हजार रथ थे।

धृष्टकेतुस्ततो राजन्नभिमन्युश्च वीर्यवान् केकया द्रौपदेयाश्च तव पुत्रानयोधयन्

O king! Then Dhṛṣṭaketu, the valiant Abhimanyu, the Kekaya-s and Draupadī's sons fought with your sons.

हे राजा! तब धृष्टकेतु, वीर अभिमन्यु, केकय और द्रौपदी के पुत्रों ने आपके पुत्रों से युद्ध किया।

चित्रसेनः सुचित्रश्च चित्राश्वश्चित्रदर्शनः चारुचित्रः सुचारुश्च तथा नन्दोपनन्दकौ

Citrasenā, Sucitra, Citrāśva, Citradarśana, Cārucitra, Sucāru, Nandā and Upanandaka -

चित्रसेना, सुचित्र, चित्रश्व, चित्रदर्शन, चारुचित्र, सुचारु, नंदा और उपनन्दक -

अष्टावेते महेष्वासाः सुकुमारा यशस्विनः अभिमन्युरथं राजन्समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्

O king! The delicate and famous Abhimanyu's chariot was surrounded from all directions by these eight great archers

हे राजा! नाजुक और प्रसिद्ध अभिमन्यु का रथ इन आठ महान धनुर्धारियों द्वारा सभी दिशाओं से घिरा हुआ था

आजघान ततस्तूर्णमभिमन्युर्महामनाः एकैकं पञ्चभिर्विद्ध्वा शरैः संनतपर्वभिः वज्रमृत्युप्रतीकाशैर्विचित्रायुधनिःसृतैः

But the great-souled Abhimanyu swiftly wounded each of them with five straight-tufted arrows. These were like the vajra, or like death itself, and were released from his colourful bow.

परन्तु महाबली अभिमन्यु ने तेजी से पाँच सीधे नुकीले बाणों से उनमें से प्रत्येक को घायल कर दिया। ये वज्र के समान थे, या स्वयं मृत्यु के समान थे, और उसके रंगीन धनुष से मुक्त हुए थे।

अमृष्यमाणास्ते सर्वे सौभद्रं रथसत्तमम् ववर्षुर्मार्गणैस्तीक्ष्णैर्गिरिं मेरुमिवाम्बुदाः

All of them were unable to tolerate this. They showered down sharp arrows on the supreme chariot of Subhadrā's son, like clouds showering down on Mount Meru.

यह बात उन सभी को बर्दाश्त नहीं हो रही थी. उन्होंने सुभद्रा के पुत्र के श्रेष्ठ रथ पर तीखे बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे मेरु पर्वत पर बादल बरसते हैं।

स पीड्यमानः समरे कृतास्त्रो युद्धदुर्मदः अभिमन्युर्महाराज तावकान्समकम्पयत् यथा देवासुरे युद्धे वज्रपाणिर्महासुरान्

Though he was skilled in weapons and invincible in battle, he was oppressed in that encounter. O great king! But Abhimanyu made all of them tremble, like the wielder of the vajra against the great āsura-s, in the battle between the gods and the āsura-s.

हालाँकि वह हथियारों में कुशल था और युद्ध में अजेय था, फिर भी उस मुठभेड़ में उस पर अत्याचार किया गया। हे महान राजा! लेकिन अभिमन्यु ने देवताओं और असुरों के बीच युद्ध में महान असुरों के खिलाफ वज्रधारी की तरह उन सभी को कांप दिया।

विकर्णस्य ततो भल्लान्प्रेषयामास भारत चतुर्दश रथश्रेष्ठो घोरानाशीविषोपमान् ध्वजं सूतं हयांश्चास्य छित्त्वा नृत्यन्निवाहवे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The foremost among charioteers despatched fourteen broad-headed and terrible arrows towards Vikarṇa. They were like venomous serpents. With these, he cut down his standard, his chariot and his horses and seemed to be dancing around in the battle.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! रथियों में सबसे अग्रणी ने विकर्ण की ओर चौदह चौड़े सिरों वाले और भयानक बाण भेजे। वे विषैले साँपों के समान थे। इनसे उसने अपने ध्वज, अपने रथ और घोड़ों को काट डाला और युद्ध में इधर-उधर नाचता हुआ प्रतीत होने लगा।

पुनश्चान्याञ्शरान्पीतानकुण्ठाग्राञ्शिलाशितान् प्रेषयामास सौभद्रो विकर्णाय महाबलः

Subhadrā's immensely strong son then again used yellow arrows against Vikarṇa that did not waver from their course.

सुभद्रा के अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्र ने फिर से विकर्ण के विरुद्ध पीले बाणों का प्रयोग किया जो अपने मार्ग से विचलित नहीं हुए।

ते विकर्णं समासाद्य कङ्कबर्हिणवाससः भित्त्वा देहं गता भूमिं ज्वलन्त इव पन्नगाः

They were pointed and had been sharpened on stone and were shafted with the feathers of herons and peacocks. They descended on Vikarṇa and pierced his body. Having done this, they penetrated the ground, like flaming serpents.

वे नुकीले थे और उन्हें पत्थर पर तेज़ किया गया था और उन पर बगुले और मोर के पंख लगे हुए थे। वे विकर्ण पर उतरे और उसके शरीर को छेद दिया। ऐसा करने के बाद, वे धधकते हुए साँपों की तरह ज़मीन में घुस गए।

ते शरा हेमपुङ्खाग्रा व्यदृश्यन्त महीतले विकर्णरुधिरक्लिन्ना वमन्त इव शोणितम्

Those gold-tufted and gold-tipped arrows could be seen stuck to the ground. They were drenched with Vikarṇa's blood and seemed to be vomiting blood.

वे सोने के गुच्छे और सोने की नोक वाले तीर जमीन पर चिपके हुए देखे जा सकते थे। वे विकर्ण के खून से भीगे हुए थे और खून की उल्टी कर रहे थे।

विकर्णं वीक्ष्य निर्भिन्नं तस्यैवान्ये सहोदराः अभ्यद्रवन्त समरे सौभद्रप्रमुखान्रथान्

On seeing that Vikarṇa had been thus wounded in the battle, all his other brothers attacked those charioteers, with Subhadrā's son at the forefront.

यह देखकर कि विकर्ण युद्ध में इस प्रकार घायल हो गया है, उसके अन्य सभी भाइयों ने, सुभद्रा के पुत्र को सबसे आगे लेकर, उन रथियों पर हमला कर दिया।

अभियात्वा तथैवाशु रथस्थान्सूर्यवर्चसः अविध्यन्समरेऽन्योन्यं संरब्धा युद्धदुर्मदाः

They swiftly advanced on their own chariots and attacked those other chariots, which were as radiant as the sun. Invincible in battle, they began to pierce each other in that encounter.

वे अपने-अपने रथों पर सवार होकर तेजी से आगे बढ़े और उन अन्य रथों पर, जो सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी थे, आक्रमण कर दिया। युद्ध में अजेय रहने के कारण, वे उस मुठभेड़ में एक-दूसरे को छेदने लगे।

दुर्मुखः श्रुतकर्माणं विद्ध्वा सप्तभिराशुगैः ध्वजमेकेन चिच्छेद सारथिं चास्य सप्तभिः

Durmukha pierced Shrutakarma with seven swift arrows, sliced down his standard with one and pierced his charioteer with seven.

दुर्मुख ने सात तीव्र बाणों से श्रुतकर्मा को घायल कर दिया, एक से उसके ध्वज को काट डाला और सात से उसके सारथि को भी घायल कर दिया।

अश्वाञ्जाम्बूनदैर्जालैः प्रच्छन्नान्वातरंहसः जघान षड्भिरासाद्य सारथिं चाभ्यपातयत्

Shurtakarma's horses were caparisoned with nets of gold and were as fleet as the wind. He advanced closer and killed them with six arrows and then brought down his charioteer.

शुर्तकर्मा के घोड़े सोने के जालों से सुसज्जित थे और हवा के समान बेड़े वाले थे। वह करीब आया और छह बाणों से उन्हें मार डाला और फिर अपने सारथी को नीचे गिरा दिया।

स हताश्वे रथे तिष्ठञ्श्रुतकर्मा महारथः शक्तिं चिक्षेप संक्रुद्धो महोल्कां ज्वलितामिव

But despite his horses having been slain, mahāratha Shrutakarma remained stationed on the chariot. In great anger, he hurled a flaming javelin that was like a giant meteor.

लेकिन अपने घोड़ों के मारे जाने के बावजूद, महारथ श्रुतकर्मा रथ पर तैनात रहे। अत्यंत क्रोध में उसने एक जलता हुआ भाला फेंका जो एक विशाल उल्का के समान था।

सा दुर्मुखस्य विपुलं वर्म भित्त्वा यशस्विनः विदार्य प्राविशद्भूमिं दीप्यमाना सुतेजना

The illustrious Durmukha's large armour was penetrated. Having shattered the armour, it penetrated the ground, blazing in its great energy.

प्रतिष्ठित दुर्मुख के विशाल कवच को भेद दिया गया। कवच को तोड़ने के बाद, वह अपनी महान ऊर्जा से चमकते हुए, जमीन में घुस गया।

तं दृष्ट्वा विरथं तत्र सुतसोमो महाबलः पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां रथमारोपयत्स्वकम्

The immensely strong Sutasoma saw that he was without a chariot. While all the soldiers looked on, he took him up on his own chariot.

अत्यंत बलशाली सुतसोम ने देखा कि वह बिना रथ के है। जब सभी सैनिक देखते रहे, तो वह उसे अपने रथ पर ले गया।

श्रुतकीर्तिस्तथा वीरो जयत्सेनं सुतं तव अभ्ययात्समरे राजन्हन्तुकामो यशस्विनम्

O king! The brave Śrutakīrti then attacked your son Jayatsenā in that battle, wishing to kill the illustrious one.

हे राजा! तब उस युद्ध में वीर श्रुतकीर्ति ने आपके पुत्र जयत्सेना को मारने की इच्छा से उस पर हमला कर दिया।

तस्य विक्षिपतश्चापं श्रुतकीर्तेर्महात्मनः चिच्छेद समरे राजञ्जयत्सेनः सुतस्तव क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन प्रहसन्निव भारत

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the great-souled Śrutakīrti stretched his bow in battle, smilingly, your son, Jayatsenā, sliced it down with an extremely sharp kṣurapra arrow.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब महाबली श्रुतकीर्ति ने युद्ध में मुस्कुराते हुए अपना धनुष बढ़ाया, तो आपके पुत्र जयत्सेन ने अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण क्षुरप्र बाण से उसे काट डाला।

तं दृष्ट्वा छिन्नधन्वानं शतानीकः सहोदरम् अभ्यपद्यत तेजस्वी सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः

Śatānīka saw that his brother's bow had been sliced down. The energetic one swiftly arrived there, roaring repeatedly like a lion.

शतानीक ने देखा कि उसके भाई का धनुष कट गया है। वह ऊर्जावान शेर की तरह बार-बार दहाड़ता हुआ तेजी से वहां पहुंचा।

शतानीकस्तु समरे दृढं विस्फार्य कार्मुकम् विव्याध दशभिस्तूर्णं जयत्सेनं शिलीमुखैः

In that battle, Śatānīka firmly drew his bow and pierced Jayatsenā with ten arrows.

उस युद्ध में शतानीक ने दृढ़तापूर्वक अपना धनुष खींचा और जयत्सेना को दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

अथान्येन सुतीक्ष्णेन सर्वावरणभेदिना शतानीको जयत्सेनं विव्याध हृदये भृशम्

Using another extremely sharp arrow that was capable of penetrating all kinds of armour, Śatānīka powerfully struck Jayatsenā in the chest.

शतानीक ने एक और अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण बाण का उपयोग करते हुए, जो सभी प्रकार के कवच को भेदने में सक्षम था, जयत्सेना की छाती में जोरदार प्रहार किया।

तथा तस्मिन्वर्तमाने दुष्कर्णो भ्रातुरन्तिके चिच्छेद समरे चापं नाकुलेः क्रोधमूर्छितः

Duṣkarṇa was near his brother then. Senseless with rage, he sliced down the bow of Nākula's son in that battle.

उस समय दुष्कर्ण अपने भाई के पास था। क्रोध से बेसुध होकर उसने युद्ध में नकुल के पुत्र नकुल का धनुष काट दिया।

अथान्यद्धनुरादाय भारसाधनमुत्तमम् समादत्त शितान्बाणाञ्शतानीको महाबलः

However, the immensely strong Śatānīka took up another supreme bow that was capable of bearing a great load and affixed sharp arrows.

हालाँकि, अत्यंत बलशाली शतानीक ने एक और सर्वोच्च धनुष उठाया जो भारी भार सहन करने में सक्षम था और उस पर तीखे बाण चढ़ाये।

तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चामन्त्र्य दुष्कर्णं भ्रातुरग्रतः मुमोच निशितान्बाणाञ्ज्वलितान्पन्नगानिव

In the presence of his brother, he asked Duṣkarṇa to wait and released sharp arrows that were like flaming serpents.

अपने भाई की उपस्थिति में, उसने दुष्कर्ण को प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए कहा और जलते हुए साँपों के समान तीखे बाण छोड़े।

ततोऽस्य धनुरेकेन द्वाभ्यां सूतं च मारिष चिच्छेद समरे तूर्णं तं च विव्याध सप्तभिः

O venerable one! He sliced down his bow with one arrow and killed his charioteer with two. In that battle, he then pierced him with seven more.

हे आदरणीय! उसने एक बाण से उसके धनुष को काट डाला और दो से उसके सारथी को मार डाला। उस लड़ाई में, उसने फिर उसे सात और से छेद दिया।

अश्वान्मनोजवांश्चास्य कल्माषान्वीतकल्मषः जघान निशितैस्तूर्णं सर्वान्द्वादशभिः शरैः

With twelve sharp arrows, the unblemished one killed all his horses, which were speckled and were as swift as the mind.

बारह तीखे बाणों से निष्कलंक ने उसके सभी घोड़ों को मार डाला, जो धब्बेदार थे और मन के समान तेज़ थे।

अथापरेण भल्लेन सुमुक्तेन निपातिना दुष्कर्णं समरे क्रुद्धो विव्याध हृदये भृशम्

In that battle, he used another broad-headed and well-released arrow to angrily pierce Duṣkarṇa deeply in the chest.

उस युद्ध में, उसने गुस्से में दुष्कर्ण की छाती में गहराई तक छेद करने के लिए एक और चौड़े सिर वाले और अच्छी तरह से छोड़े गए तीर का इस्तेमाल किया।

दुष्कर्णं निहतं दृष्ट्वा पञ्च राजन्महारथाः जिघांसन्तः शतानीकं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्

O king! On seeing that Duṣkarṇa had been smitten, five mahāratha-s surrounded Śatānīka from all sides, wishing to kill him.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि दुष्कर्ण मारा गया, पाँच महारथियों ने शतानीक को मार डालने की इच्छा से चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

छाद्यमानं शरव्रातैः शतानीकं यशस्विनम् अभ्यधावन्त संरब्धाः केकयाः पञ्च सोदराः

They enveloped the illustrious Śatānīka with a torrent of arrows. Extremely wrathful, the five brothers from Kekaya advanced to the attack.

उन्होंने बाणों की धारा से उस भव्य शतानीक को आच्छादित कर दिया। अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर केकय के पाँचों भाई आक्रमण के लिए आगे बढ़े।

तानभ्यापततः प्रेक्ष्य तव पुत्रा महारथाः प्रत्युद्ययुर्महाराज गजा इव महागजान्

O great king! On seeing them advance, like elephants against giant elephants, your mahāratha sons—

हे महान राजा! उन्हें विशाल हाथियों के विरुद्ध हाथियों की भाँति आगे बढ़ते देख आपके महारथ पुत्र-

दुर्मुखो दुर्जयश्चैव तथा दुर्मर्षणो युवा शत्रुंजयः शत्रुसहः सर्वे क्रुद्धा यशस्विनः प्रत्युद्याता महाराज केकयान्भ्रातरः समम्

Durmukha, Durjayā, the youthful Durmarṣaṇa, Śatruñjayā and Śatrusaha, all of them wrathful and illustrious, countered the brothers from Kekaya.

दुर्मुख, दुर्जय, युवा दुर्मर्षण, शत्रुंजय और शत्रुसह, ये सभी क्रोधी और प्रतापी थे, उन्होंने केकय के भाइयों का मुकाबला किया।

रथैर्नगरसंकाशैर्हयैर्युक्तैर्मनोजवैः नानावर्णविचित्राभिः पताकाभिरलंकृतैः

Their chariots were like cities, with many colours and decorated with flags, and horses as fleet as thought had been yoked to them.

उनके रथ नगरों के समान थे, अनेक रंगों वाले और झंडों से सुशोभित थे, और घोड़े बेड़े के समान थे, जैसा कि उन्होंने सोचा था।

वरचापधरा वीरा विचित्रकवचध्वजाः विविशुस्ते परं सैन्यं सिंहा इव वनाद्वनम्

The brave ones held supreme bows and were adorned with colourful armour and standards. They descended on the enemy soldiers, like lions moving from one forest to another forest.

वीरों के पास सर्वोच्च धनुष थे और वे रंगीन कवच और ध्वजाओं से सुशोभित थे। वे शत्रु सैनिकों पर इस प्रकार टूट पड़े, जैसे एक जंगल से दूसरे जंगल में जाने वाले शेर हों।

तेषां सुतुमुलं युद्धं व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपम् अवर्तत महारौद्रं निघ्नतामितरेतरम् अन्योन्यागस्कृतां राजन्यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम्

A tumultuous battle ensued, with chariots and elephants. It was extremely terrible, where they sought to kill each other. O king! Because of enmity towards each other, they increased the numbers in Yāma's kingdom.

रथों और हाथियों के साथ घमासान युद्ध छिड़ गया। यह बेहद भयानक था, जहां वे एक-दूसरे को मारने की कोशिश कर रहे थे। हे राजा! एक-दूसरे के प्रति शत्रुता के कारण, उन्होंने यम के राज्य में संख्या बढ़ा दी।

मुहूर्तास्तमिते सूर्ये चक्रुर्युद्धं सुदारुणम् रथिनः सादिनश्चैव व्यकीर्यन्त सहस्रशः

But since the sun was about to set, that extremely terrible battle lasted only for a short while. Thousands of charioteers and horse-riders were strewn around.

परंतु चूँकि सूर्य अस्त होने वाला था इसलिए वह अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध थोड़ी देर तक ही चला। हजारों रथी और घुड़सवार चारों ओर फैले हुए थे।

ततः शांतनवः क्रुद्धः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः नाशयामास सेनां वै भीष्मस्तेषां महात्मनाम् पाञ्चालानां च सैन्यानि शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम्

Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, was excited with rage. He used straight-tufted arrows to slaughter the soldiers of the great-souled ones. He used his arrows to despatch the Pāñcāla soldiers to Yāma's undecaying realm.

शान्तनु के पुत्र भीष्म क्रोध से उत्तेजित हो गये। उन्होंने महाबली सैनिकों का वध करने के लिये सीधे नुकीले बाणों का प्रयोग किया। उन्होंने पंचाल सैनिकों को यम के अक्षय लोक में भेजने के लिए अपने बाणों का उपयोग किया।

एवं भित्त्वा महेष्वासः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् कृत्वावहारं सैन्यानां ययौ स्वशिबिरं नृप

O king! Having thus shattered the Pāṇḍava army, the great archer withdrew his soldiers and returned to his own camp.

हे राजा! इस प्रकार पांडव सेना को छिन्न-भिन्न करके महान धनुर्धर अपने सैनिकों को हटाकर अपने शिविर में लौट आये।

धर्मराजोऽपि संप्रेक्ष्य धृष्टद्युम्नवृकोदरौ मूर्ध्नि चैतावुपाघ्राय संहृष्टः शिबिरं ययौ

Having seen Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Vṛkodara, Dharmarāja inhaled the fragrances of their heads and happily retired to his own camp.

धृष्टद्युम्न और वृकोदर को देखकर, धर्मराज ने उनके सिर की सुगंध ली और खुशी-खुशी अपने शिविर में चले गए।
