धृतराष्ट्र उवाच सूर्योदये संजय के नु पूर्वं; युयुत्सवो हृष्यमाणा इवासन् मामका वा भीष्मनेत्राः समीके; पाण्डवा वा भीमनेत्रास्तदानीम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: "O Sañjaya! My army, with Bhīṣma as the leader, and that of the Pāṇḍava-s, with Bhīmā as the leader, desired to fight. When the sun arose, which of these was cheerful when it approached the other?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: "हे संजय! मेरी सेना, भीष्म को नेता बनाकर और पांडवों की, भीम को नेता बनाकर, युद्ध करना चाहती थी। जब सूर्य उदय हुआ, तो दूसरे के पास आने पर इनमें से कौन प्रसन्न था?

केषां जघन्यौ सोमसूर्यौ सवायू; केषां सेनां श्वापदा व्याभषन्त केषां यूनां मुखवर्णाः प्रसन्नाः; सर्वं ह्येतद्ब्रूहि तत्त्वं यथावत्

To which side were the moon, the sun and the wind adverse? Against which army did predators utter inauspicious sounds? Which were the young ones who had cheerful complexions on their faces? Tell me all this, exactly and in detail."

चंद्रमा, सूर्य और हवा किस पक्ष के प्रतिकूल थे? शिकारियों ने किस सेना के विरुद्ध अशुभ ध्वनियाँ निकालीं? वे कौन से युवा थे जिनके चेहरे पर प्रसन्नता थी? यह सब मुझे ठीक-ठीक और विस्तार से बताओ।”

संजय उवाच उभे सेने तुल्यमिवोपयाते; उभे व्यूहे हृष्टरूपे नरेन्द्र उभे चित्रे वनराजिप्रकाशे; तथैवोभे नागरथाश्वपूर्णे

Sañjaya said: "O Indra among kings! When the two armies were equally arranged in vyūha-s, they were equally cheerful. They were equally beautiful, as resplendent as forests. They were full of elephants, chariots and horses.

संजय ने कहा: "हे राजाओं में इंद्र! जब दोनों सेनाएं व्यूहों में समान रूप से व्यवस्थित थीं, तो वे समान रूप से प्रसन्न थीं। वे समान रूप से सुंदर थे, जंगलों के समान देदीप्यमान थे। वे हाथियों, रथों और घोड़ों से भरे हुए थे।

उभे सेने बृहती भीमरूपे; तथैवोभे भारत दुर्विषह्ये तथैवोभे स्वर्गजयाय सृष्टे; तथा ह्युभे सत्पुरुषार्यगुप्ते

Both the armies were large and terrible in form. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Each one was incapable of withstanding the other. It was as if both had been created for conquering heaven. Both were protected by virtuous men.

दोनों सेनाएँ विशाल एवं भयानक रूप में थीं। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हर एक दूसरे का सामना करने में असमर्थ था। यह ऐसा था मानो दोनों स्वर्ग जीतने के लिए बनाए गए हों। दोनों ही सत्पुरुषों द्वारा संरक्षित थे।

पश्चान्मुखाः कुरवो धार्तराष्ट्राः; स्थिताः पार्थाः प्राङ्मुखा योत्स्यमानाः दैत्येन्द्रसेनेव च कौरवाणां; देवेन्द्रसेनेव च पाण्डवानाम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, the Kuru-s, faced the west. The Pārtha-s were stationed facing the east, ready to fight. The Kaurava-s were like the army of the Indra of the daitya-s, the Pāṇḍava-s were like the army of the Indra of the gods.

धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र कुरु-वंश का मुख पश्चिम की ओर था। पार्थ-पूर्व की ओर मुंह करके तैनात थे, लड़ने के लिए तैयार थे। कौरव दैत्यों के इंद्र की सेना की तरह थे, पांडव देवताओं के इंद्र की सेना की तरह थे।

शुक्रो वायुः पृष्ठतः पाण्डवानां; धार्तराष्ट्राञ्श्वापदा व्याभषन्त गजेन्द्राणां मदगन्धांश्च तीव्रा;न्न सेहिरे तव पुत्रस्य नागाः

The wind blew from behind the Pāṇḍava-s. The predators howled from behind the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. The elephants of your son could not bear the sharp smell from the musth of those Indra-s among elephants.

पाण्डवों के पीछे से हवा चली। धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के पीछे से शिकारी चिल्ला रहे थे। आपके पुत्र के हाथी हाथियों में से उन इन्द्रों की मूंछों की तीव्र गंध को सहन नहीं कर सके।

दुर्योधनो हस्तिनं पद्मवर्णं; सुवर्णकक्ष्यं जातिबलं प्रभिन्नम् समास्थितो मध्यगतः कुरूणां; संस्तूयमानो बन्दिभिर्मागधैश्च

Duryodhana was on an elephant with the complexion of a lotus. It was armoured and had rent temples. It possessed a golden girdle. He was stationed in the midst of the Kuru-s and the bards and the minstrels praised him.

दुर्योधन कमल के समान रंग वाले हाथी पर सवार था। यह बख्तरबंद था और इसमें किराये के मंदिर थे। इसमें एक सोने का करधनी था। वह कुरूओं के बीच में स्थित था और भाटों तथा वादकों ने उसकी प्रशंसा की।

चन्द्रप्रभं श्वेतमस्यातपत्रं; सौवर्णी स्रग्भ्राजते चोत्तमाङ्गे तं सर्वतः शकुनिः पार्वतीयैः; सार्धं गान्धारैः पाति गान्धारराजः

A white umbrella with a golden chain, as brilliant as the moon, was held aloft his head. Śākuni, the king of Gāndhāra, followed him, surrounded in every direction by mountainous people from the region of Gāndhāra.

उनके सिर पर सुनहरी जंजीर वाला चंद्रमा के समान चमकीला सफेद छाता रखा हुआ था। गांधार के राजा शकुनि ने उसका पीछा किया, जो गांधार क्षेत्र के पहाड़ी लोगों से हर दिशा में घिरा हुआ था।

भीष्मोऽग्रतः सर्वसैन्यस्य वृद्धः; श्वेतच्छत्रः श्वेतधनुः सशङ्खः श्वेतोष्णीषः पाण्डुरेण ध्वजेन; श्वेतैरश्वैः श्वेतशैलप्रकाशः

The aged Bhīṣma was in front of all the soldiers. He had a white umbrella, a white bow, a conch shell, a white headdress, a white flag and white horses, and looked like a white mountain.

वृद्ध भीष्म सभी सैनिकों में सबसे आगे थे। उसके पास एक सफेद छत्र, एक सफेद धनुष, एक शंख, एक सफेद टोपी, एक सफेद ध्वज और सफेद घोड़े थे और वह एक सफेद पर्वत की तरह दिखता था।

तस्य सैन्यं धार्तराष्ट्राश्च सर्वे; बाह्लीकानामेकदेशः शलश्च ये चाम्बष्ठाः क्षत्रिया ये च सिन्धौ; तथा सौवीराः पञ्चनदाश्च शूराः

All the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were in his army and also Śala, who came from the country named Bahlika. The kṣatriya-s from Ambaṣṭha, those from Sindhu and Sauvīra and the brave ones from the land of the five rivers were also there.

उनकी सेना में धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्र और बाह्लीक नामक देश से आये शाल भी थे। अम्बष्ठ के क्षत्रिय, सिन्धु और सौवीर के क्षत्रिय तथा पाँच नदियों की भूमि के वीर भी वहाँ थे।

शोणैर्हयै रुक्मरथो महात्मा; द्रोणो महाबाहुरदीनसत्त्वः आस्ते गुरुः प्रयशाः सर्वराज्ञां; पश्चाच्चमूमिन्द्र इवाभिरक्षन्

The great-souled Droṇa was on a golden chariot with red horses. He was mighty-armed and his spirit never waned. He was the preceptor of almost all the kings. He was like an Indra on earth, protecting from the rear.

महाबली द्रोण लाल घोड़ों से युक्त सुनहरे रथ पर सवार थे। वह शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाला था और उसकी भावना कभी कम नहीं होती थी। वह लगभग सभी राजाओं के गुरु थे। वह पृथ्वी पर इंद्र के समान था, जो पीछे से रक्षा करता था।

वार्द्धक्षत्रिः सर्वसैन्यस्य मध्ये; भूरिश्रवाः पुरुमित्रो जयश्च शाल्वा मत्स्याः केकयाश्चापि सर्वे; गजानीकैर्भ्रातरो योत्स्यमानाः

Vardhakshatri, Bhurishrava, Purumitra, Jayā, Śālva, Mātsya and all the Kekaya-s, with their brothers, were in the midst of all the soldiers. They possessed an army of elephants and wished to fight.

वर्धक्षत्रि, भूरिश्रवा, पुरुमित्र, जया, शाल्व, मत्स्य और सभी केकय-अपने भाइयों के साथ, सभी सैनिकों के बीच में थे। उनके पास हाथियों की सेना थी और वे युद्ध करना चाहते थे।

शारद्वतश्चोत्तरधूर्महात्मा; महेष्वासो गौतमश्चित्रयोधी शकैः किरातैर्यवनैः पह्लवैश्च; सार्धं चमूमुत्तरतोऽभिपाति

Śaradvat's great-souled son always fought in the front. He was the great archer Gautama, wonderful in fighting. With Śāka-s, Kirāta-s, Yāvana-s and Pahlava-s, he stationed himself in the forefront of the army.

शरद्वात का महाबली पुत्र सदैव आगे बढ़कर युद्ध करता था। वह महान धनुर्धर गौतम, युद्ध में अद्भुत था। शकों, किरातों, यवनों और पहलवों के साथ, उन्होंने खुद को सेना में सबसे आगे तैनात किया।

महारथैरन्धकवृष्णिभोजैः; सौराष्ट्रकैर्नैरृतैरात्तशस्त्रैः बृहद्बलः कृतवर्माभिगुप्तो; बलं त्वदीयं दक्षिणतोऽभिपाति

That large army was protected by mahāratha-s from Andhaka, Vṛṣṇi and Bhojā and also those from Saurāṣṭra and the south-west, skilled in the use of weapons. There was also Kritavarma, who advanced behind your army.

उस विशाल सेना की रक्षा अंधक, वृष्णि और भोज के साथ-साथ सौराष्ट्र और दक्षिण-पश्चिम के योद्धाओं द्वारा की गई थी, जो हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल थे। आपकी सेना के पीछे आगे बढ़ने वाला कृतवर्मा भी था।

संशप्तकानामयुतं रथानां; मृत्युर्जयो वार्जुनस्येति सृष्टाः येनार्जुनस्तेन राजन्कृतास्त्राः; प्रयाता वै ते त्रिगर्ताश्च शूराः

There were ten thousand saṃśaptaka rāṭha-s, who had been created for death or for triumphing over Arjuna. O king! They were skilled in the use of weapons. They advanced with the brave Trigarta-s, resolved to follow Arjuna at every step.

दस हजार संशप्तक रथ थे, जो मृत्यु के लिए या अर्जुन पर विजय पाने के लिए बनाए गए थे। हे राजा! वे अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल थे। वे वीर त्रिगर्तों के साथ आगे बढ़े और हर कदम पर अर्जुन का अनुसरण करने का संकल्प लिया।

साग्रं शतसहस्रं तु नागानां तव भारत नागे नागे रथशतं शतं चाश्वा रथे रथे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were ten thousand fierce elephants on your side. A hundred chariots were assigned to each elephant, a hundred horses were assigned to each chariot,

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके पक्ष में दस हजार भयंकर हाथी थे। प्रत्येक हाथी के लिए सौ रथ, प्रत्येक रथ के लिए सौ घोड़े नियुक्त किये गये थे।

अश्वेऽश्वे दश धानुष्का धानुष्के दश चर्मिणः एवं व्यूढान्यनीकानि भीष्मेण तव भारत

ten archers were assigned to each horse and ten shieldbearers were assigned to each archer. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Thus did Bhīṣma arrange your troops in battle formation.

प्रत्येक घोड़े के लिए दस धनुर्धर नियुक्त किए गए और प्रत्येक तीरंदाज के लिए दस ढालवाहक नियुक्त किए गए। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इस प्रकार भीष्म ने आपके सैनिकों को युद्ध संरचना में व्यवस्थित किया।

अव्यूहन्मानुषं व्यूहं दैवं गान्धर्वमासुरम् दिवसे दिवसे प्राप्ते भीष्मः शांतनवोऽग्रणीः

From one day to another, Bhīṣma, the general and Śāntanu's son, arranged it in human vyūha-s, or vyūha-s of gods, gāndharva-s and āsura-s.

एक दिन से दूसरे दिन तक, सेनापति और शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने इसे मानव व्यूह, या देवताओं, गंधर्व और असुरों के व्यूह में व्यवस्थित किया।

महारथौघविपुलः समुद्र इव पर्वणि भीष्मेण धार्तराष्ट्राणां व्यूहः प्रत्यङ्मुखो युधि

With a large number of mahāratha-s, it was like the ocean on the night of the full moon. Arranged in a vyūha by Bhīṣma, the army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son was stationed facing the west, ready to fight.

बड़ी संख्या में महारथियों के साथ, यह पूर्णिमा की रात के समुद्र के समान था। भीष्म द्वारा व्यूह में व्यवस्थित, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र की सेना पश्चिम की ओर मुंह करके लड़ने के लिए तैयार थी।

अनन्तरूपा ध्वजिनी त्वदीया; नरेन्द्र भीमा न तु पाण्डवानाम् तां त्वेव मन्ये बृहतीं दुष्प्रधृष्यां; यस्या नेतारौ केशवश्चार्जुनश्च

O Indra among kings! Your side was innumerable with standards. It was terrible. But though it was not like yours, it seemed to me that the one of the Pāṇḍava-s was larger and invincible, with leaders like Keśava and Arjuna."

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! तेरे पक्ष में मानक असंख्य थे। यह भयानक था। लेकिन यद्यपि यह आपके जैसा नहीं था, मुझे ऐसा लगा कि पांडवों में से एक बड़ा और अजेय था, जिसमें केशव और अर्जुन जैसे नेता थे।"
