धृतराष्ट्र उवाच एवं व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु मामकेष्वितरेषु च के पूर्वं प्राहरंस्तत्र कुरवः पाण्डवास्तथा

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "My soldiers, and those of the others, were arranged in battle formations. Who was the first to strike, the Kuru-s or the Pāṇḍava-s?"

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: "मेरे सैनिक, और अन्य सैनिक, युद्ध संरचनाओं में व्यवस्थित थे। सबसे पहले हमला करने वाला कौन था, कुरु-या पांडव-?"

संजय उवाच भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजन्पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव भीष्मं प्रमुखतः कृत्वा प्रययौ सह सेनया

Sañjaya said: O king! Your son Duryodhana advanced with his brothers, placing Bhīṣma at the forefront of the army.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! आपका पुत्र दुर्योधन भीष्म को सेना में सबसे आगे रखकर अपने भाइयों के साथ आगे बढ़ा।

तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीमसेनपुरोगमाः भीष्मेण युद्धमिच्छन्तः प्रययुर्हृष्टमानसाः

Delighted in their minds and wishing to fight with Bhīṣma, so did the Pāṇḍava-s, with Bhīmasena at the forefront.

उनके मन में प्रसन्नता थी और वे भीष्म से युद्ध करने की इच्छा कर रहे थे, इसी तरह पांडव भी भीमसेन को सबसे आगे रखकर युद्ध करना चाहते थे।

क्ष्वेडाः किलकिलाशब्दाः क्रकचा गोविषाणिकाः भेरीमृदङ्गमुरजा हयकुञ्जरनिस्वनाः

There were clamorous sounds, with krakacā-s, trumpets made out of the horns of cows, drums, kettledrums, tambourines and the roars of horses and elephants.

कर्कश ध्वनियाँ, गायों के सींगों से बनी तुरहियाँ, ढोल, नगाड़े, डफ और घोड़ों और हाथियों की दहाड़ें थीं।

उभयोः सेनयो राजंस्ततस्तेऽस्मान्समाद्रवन् वयं प्रतिनदन्तश्च तदासीत्तुमुलं महत्

O king! With a tumultuous sound, both the armies rushed - they rushed at us and we at them.

हे राजा! कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि के साथ दोनों सेनाएँ दौड़ीं - वे हमारी ओर दौड़ीं और हम उन पर।

महान्त्यनीकानि महासमुच्छ्रये; समागमे पाण्डवधार्तराष्ट्रयोः चकम्पिरे शङ्खमृदङ्गनिस्वनैः; प्रकम्पितानीव वनानि वायुना

In that great encounter and confrontation, the giant armies of the Pāṇḍava-s and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra trembled, like a forest stirred by the wind.

उस महान मुठभेड़ और टकराव में, पांडवों और धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की विशाल सेनाएं हवा से हिलते हुए जंगल की तरह कांप उठीं।

नरेन्द्रनागाश्वरथाकुलाना;मभ्यायतीनामशिवे मुहूर्ते बभूव घोषस्तुमुलश्चमूनां; वातोद्धुतानामिव सागराणाम्

The loud roar of those masses of kings, elephants, horses and chariots, dashing against each other at that inauspicious hour, was like that of the ocean agitated by a storm.

उस अशुभ समय में एक-दूसरे पर आक्रमण करने वाले राजाओं, हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों के उन जनसमूह की तीव्र गर्जना तूफान से उद्वेलित हुए समुद्र के समान थी।

तस्मिन्समुत्थिते शब्दे तुमुले लोमहर्षणे भीमसेनो महाबाहुः प्राणदद्गोवृषो यथा

When that tumultuous sound arose and made the body hair stand up, the mighty-armed Bhīmasena roared like a bull.

जब वह भयंकर ध्वनि उठी और शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गये, तब महाबाहु भीमसेन बैल के समान दहाड़ने लगे।

शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं वारणानां च बृंहितम् सिंहनादं च सैन्यानां भीमसेनरवोऽभ्यभूत्

Bhīmasena's roars transcended the sounds of conch shells and drums, the trumpeting of elephants and the lion-like roars of the soldiers.

भीमसेन की दहाड़ें शंख और ढोल की आवाज, हाथियों की चिंघाड़ और सैनिकों की शेर जैसी दहाड़ से भी आगे निकल गईं।

हयानां हेषमाणानामनीकेषु सहस्रशः सर्वानभ्यभवच्छब्दान्भीमसेनस्य निस्वनः

Bhīmasena's loud roar surpassed the neighing of thousands of horses in both the armies.

भीमसेन की तीव्र गर्जना दोनों सेनाओं के हजारों घोड़ों की हिनहिनाहट से भी अधिक शक्तिशाली थी।

तं श्रुत्वा निनदं तस्य सैन्यास्तव वितत्रसुः जीमूतस्येव नदतः शक्राशनिसमस्वनम्

On hearing the roar of that brave one, which was like the sound of the clouds or the sound of Śākra's thunder, your soldiers were frightened.

उस वीर की मेघनाद अथवा शक्र की गड़गड़ाहट के समान गर्जना सुनकर आपके सैनिक भयभीत हो गये।

वाहनानि च सर्वाणि शकृन्मूत्रं प्रसुस्रुवुः शब्देन तस्य वीरस्य सिंहस्येवेतरे मृगाः

All the animals excreted urine and dung, like deer do at the sound of a lion.

सभी जानवर मल-मूत्र और गोबर का उत्सर्जन करते हैं, जैसे हिरण सिंह की आवाज सुनकर करते हैं।

दर्शयन्घोरमात्मानं महाभ्रमिव नादयन् विभीषयंस्तव सुतांस्तव सेनां समभ्ययात्

He showed himself in a terrible form and roared like a giant cloud. He terrified the soldiers of your sons and attacked them.

उसने अपना भयंकर रूप दिखाया और विशाल बादल के समान गर्जना की। उसने आपके पुत्रों के सैनिकों को भयभीत कर दिया और उन पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

तमायान्तं महेष्वासं सोदर्याः पर्यवारयन् छादयन्तः शरव्रातैर्मेघा इव दिवाकरम्

O king! When that mighty archer attacked them, he was surrounded by all the brothers who are your sons—

हे राजा! जब उस शक्तिशाली धनुर्धर ने उन पर हमला किया, तो वह उन सभी भाइयों से घिरा हुआ था जो आपके पुत्र हैं-

दुर्योधनश्च पुत्रस्ते दुर्मुखो दुःसहः शलः दुःशासनश्चातिरथस्तथा दुर्मर्षणो नृप

Duryodhana, Durmukha, Duḥsaha, Śala, atiratha Duḥśāsana, Durmarṣaṇa,

दुर्योधन, दुर्मुख, दु:सह, शल, अतिरथ दु:शासन, दुर्मर्षण,

विविंशतिश्चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च महारथः पुरुमित्रो जयो भोजः सौमदत्तिश्च वीर्यवान्

Viviṃśati, Citrasenā, mahāratha Vikarṇa, Purumitra, Jayā, Bhojā and Somadatta's valorous son.

विविंशति, चित्रसेना, महारथ विकर्ण, पुरुमित्र, जया, भोज और सोमदत्त के वीर पुत्र।

महाचापानि धुन्वन्तो जलदा इव विद्युतः आददानाश्च नाराचान्निर्मुक्ताशीविषोपमान्

They showered him with arrows, like clouds enveloping the sun. They brandished their giant bows, which were like clouds tinged with lightning. They unleashed sharp arrows that were like virulent serpents.

उन्होंने उस पर बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे बादल सूर्य को ढक लेते हैं। उन्होंने अपने विशाल धनुष लहराये, जो बिजली से चमकते बादलों के समान थे। उन्होंने तीखे बाण छोड़े जो विषैले साँपों के समान थे।

अथ तान्द्रौपदीपुत्राः सौभद्रश्च महारथः नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः

At that, Draupadī's sons, Subhadrā's mahāratha son, Nākula, Sahadeva and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna

उस समय, द्रौपदी के पुत्र, सुभद्रा के पुत्र महारथ, नकुल, सहदेव और पारशत धृष्टद्युम्न थे।

धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रतिययुरर्दयन्तः शितैः शरैः वज्रैरिव महावेगैः शिखराणि धराभृताम्

repulsed the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and pierced them with sharp arrows. They shattered them, like summits with the great force of thunder.

धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों को खदेड़ दिया और तीखे बाणों से उन्हें घायल कर दिया। उन्होंने उन्हें गड़गड़ाहट की प्रचंड शक्ति से शिखरों की भाँति चकनाचूर कर दिया।

तस्मिन्प्रथमसंमर्दे भीमज्यातलनिस्वने तावकानां परेषां च नासीत्कश्चित्पराङ्मुखः

In that first encounter, with the terrible sound of bows twanging against arm-guards, neither your side, nor that of the other, retreated.

उस पहली मुठभेड़ में, शस्त्र-रक्षकों के विरुद्ध धनुष की टंकार की भयानक ध्वनि के साथ, न तो आपका पक्ष पीछे हटा, न ही दूसरा पक्ष।

लाघवं द्रोणशिष्याणामपश्यं भरतर्षभ निमित्तवेधिनां राजञ्शरानुत्सृजतां भृशम्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! I witnessed the dexterity of Droṇa's disciples. O king! They shot many arrows, which always found their mark.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! मैंने द्रोण के शिष्यों की निपुणता देखी। हे राजा! उन्होंने कई तीर चलाए, जिनका निशान हमेशा मिलता रहा।

नोपशाम्यति निर्घोषो धनुषां कूजतां तथा विनिश्चेरुः शरा दीप्ता ज्योतींषीव नभस्तलात्

The roar of the bows did not cease, even for an instant. The flaming arrows were like stars in the sky.

धनुषों की गर्जना एक क्षण के लिये भी न रुकी। जलते हुए तीर आकाश में तारों के समान थे।

सर्वे त्वन्ये महीपालाः प्रेक्षका इव भारत ददृशुर्दर्शनीयं तं भीमं ज्ञातिसमागमम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the other kings were spectators, witnessing the spectacular encounter between relatives.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अन्य सभी राजा दर्शक थे और रिश्तेदारों के बीच इस शानदार मुकाबले को देख रहे थे।

ततस्ते जातसंरम्भाः परस्परकृतागसः अन्योन्यस्पर्धया राजन्व्यायच्छन्त महारथाः

O king! Remembering the injuries they had suffered from each other, the mahāratha-s were enraged and challenged and strove.

हे राजा! एक-दूसरे से लगी चोटों को याद करके, मराठा क्रोधित हो गए और चुनौती दी और संघर्ष किया।

कुरुपाण्डवसेने ते हस्त्यश्वरथसंकुले शुशुभाते रणेऽतीव पटे चित्रगते इव

With elephants, horses and chariots, the armies of the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s were extremely beautiful on the field of battle, like figures on a painting.

हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों के साथ कुरु और पांडवों की सेनाएँ युद्ध के मैदान में किसी चित्र की आकृतियों के समान अत्यंत सुंदर थीं।

ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे प्रगृहीतशरासनाः सहसैन्याः समापेतुः पुत्रस्य तव शासनात्

Then all the kings grasped their bows. Instructed by your son, they advanced with their armies.

तब सब राजाओं ने अपने-अपने धनुष उठा लिये। आपके पुत्र के निर्देश पर वे अपनी सेनाओं के साथ आगे बढ़े।

युधिष्ठिरेण चादिष्टाः पार्थिवास्ते सहस्रशः विनदन्तः समापेतुः पुत्रस्य तव वाहिनीम्

Thousands of kings were instructed by Yudhiṣṭhira. They roared and attacked your son's army.

युधिष्ठिर द्वारा हजारों राजाओं को उपदेश | उन्होंने गरजते हुए आपके पुत्र की सेना पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

उभयोः सेनयोस्तीव्रः सैन्यानां स समागमः अन्तर्धीयत चादित्यः सैन्येन रजसावृतः

The encounter between the soldiers of both the armies was terrible. Because of the dust raised by the soldiers, the sun disappeared.

दोनों सेनाओं के सैनिकों के बीच मुठभेड़ भयानक थी. सैनिकों द्वारा उठायी गयी धूल के कारण सूर्य अदृश्य हो गया।

प्रयुद्धानां प्रभग्नानां पुनरावर्ततामपि नात्र स्वेषां परेषां वा विशेषः समजायत

They advanced. They retreated. They advanced again. One could not detect any difference between ours and those of the enemy.

वे आगे बढ़े. उन्होंने अपना पैर वापिस खींचा। वे फिर आगे बढ़े. हमारे और दुश्मन के बीच कोई अंतर नहीं पता चल सका.

तस्मिंस्तु तुमुले युद्धे वर्तमाने महाभये अति सर्वाण्यनीकानि पिता तेऽभिव्यरोचत

An extremely fearful and tumultuous battle raged. But your father surpassed all the other soldiers.

अत्यंत भयानक और कोलाहलपूर्ण युद्ध छिड़ गया। परन्तु आपके पिता अन्य सभी सैनिकों से आगे निकल गये।
