संजय उवाच एवं ते पाण्डवाः सर्वे पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् विव्यधुः समरे भीष्मं परिवार्य समन्ततः

Sañjaya said: All the Pāṇḍava-s placed Śikhaṇḍī at the head. In that encounter, they surrounded Bhīṣma from all sides and wounded him,

संजय ने कहा: सभी पांडवों ने शिखंडी को सिर पर रखा। उस मुठभेड़ में, उन्होंने भीष्म को चारों ओर से घेर लिया और उन्हें घायल कर दिया,

शतघ्नीभिः सुघोराभिः पट्टिशैः सपरश्वधैः मुद्गरैर्मुसलैः प्रासैः क्षेपणीभिश्च सर्वशः

using extremely terrible śataghnī-s, javelins, battleaxes, clubs, maces, spears, many types of catapults,

अत्यंत भयानक शतघ्नी, भाले, फरसे, गदाएं, गदाएं, भाले, अनेक प्रकार की गुलेलों का उपयोग करना,

शरैः कनकपुङ्खैश्च शक्तितोमरकम्पनैः नाराचैर्वत्सदन्तैश्च भुशुण्डीभिश्च भारत अताडयन्रणे भीष्मं सहिताः सर्वसृञ्जयाः

gold-tufted arrows, spikes, lances, kampanā-s, iron arrows, vatsadanta-s and slings. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Together with all the Sṛñjaya-s, they assailed Bhīṣma.

सोने से जड़े तीर, कीलें, भाले, कम्पाना, लोहे के तीर, वत्सदंत और गुलेल। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सभी सृंजय-संगों के साथ, उन्होंने भीष्म पर हमला किया।

स विशीर्णतनुत्राणः पीडितो बहुभिस्तदा विव्यथे नैव गाङ्गेयो भिद्यमानेषु मर्मसु

His armour was shattered and he was oppressed everywhere, in many ways. But despite having been pierced in his inner organs, Gāṅgeya was not distressed.

उसका कवच टूट गया और उस पर हर जगह, कई तरह से अत्याचार किया गया। लेकिन अपने आंतरिक अंगों में छेद होने के बावजूद, गांगेय व्यथित नहीं थे।

स दीप्तशरचापार्चिरस्त्रप्रसृतमारुतः नेमिनिर्ह्रादसंनादो महास्त्रोदयपावकः

The radiant bow and arrows and weapons seemed to be like the flames of a fire, fanned by the wind. The roar of the wheels of his chariot was the heat. His great weapons constituted the fire itself.

दीप्तिमान धनुष, बाण और हथियार हवा से भड़की हुई आग की लपटों के समान जान पड़ते थे। उसके रथ के पहियों की गड़गड़ाहट गर्मी थी। उनके महान हथियारों में आग ही शामिल थी।

चित्रचापमहाज्वालो वीरक्षयमहेन्धनः युगान्ताग्निसमो भीष्मः परेषां समपद्यत

His colourful bow was extremely resplendent and the one with the great bow was the destroyer of brave ones. Bhīṣma was like the fire at the end of a yuga, traversing through the enemy.

उसका रंग-बिरंगा धनुष अत्यंत देदीप्यमान था और महान धनुष वाला धनुष वीरों का विनाश करने वाला था। भीष्म एक युग के अंत में शत्रु को भेदने वाली अग्नि के समान थे।

निपत्य रथसंघानामन्तरेण विनिःसृतः दृश्यते स्म नरेन्द्राणां पुनर्मध्यगतश्चरन्

He passed and brought down masses of chariots in that battle. He was again seen, roaming around in the midst of those kings among men.

वह उस युद्ध में बहुत सारे रथों को पार कर नीचे ले आया। वह फिर उन राजाओं के बीच मनुष्यों के बीच घूमता हुआ दिखाई दिया।

ततः पाञ्चालराजं च धृष्टकेतुमतीत्य च पाण्डवानीकिनीमध्यमाससाद स वेगितः

He ignored the king of Pāñcāla and Dhṛṣṭaketu and forcibly penetrated into the midst of the Pāṇḍava army.

उसने पंचाल के राजा और धृष्टकेतु की उपेक्षा की और जबरदस्ती पांडव सेना के बीच में घुस गया।

ततः सात्यकिभीमौ च पाण्डवं च धनंजयम् द्रुपदं च विराटं च धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम्

He pierced Sātyaki, Bhīmā, Pāṇḍava Dhanañjayā, Drupada, Virāṭa and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna

उन्होंने सात्यकि, भीम, पांडव धनंजय, द्रुपद, विराट और पार्श्वत धृष्टद्युम्न को घायल कर दिया।

भीमघोषैर्महावेगैर्वैरिवारणभेदिभिः षडेतान्षड्भिरानर्छद्भास्करप्रतिमैः शरैः

with extremely forceful arrows that could penetrate the armour of enemies. These six were struck with arrows that made a terrible roar and were as radiant as the sun.

अत्यंत शक्तिशाली बाणों से जो शत्रुओं के कवच को भेद सकते थे। ये छः भयंकर गर्जना करने वाले तथा सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी बाणों से घायल किये गये थे।

तस्य ते निशितान्बाणान्संनिवार्य महारथाः दशभिर्दशभिर्भीष्ममर्दयामासुरोजसा

However, the mahāratha-s repulsed those sharp arrows. Each of them struck Bhīṣma with great energy, using ten arrows each.

हालाँकि, महारथियों ने उन तीखे बाणों को खदेड़ दिया। उनमें से प्रत्येक ने दस-दस बाणों का प्रयोग करके भीष्म पर बड़ी शक्ति से प्रहार किया।

शिखण्डी तु रणे बाणान्यान्मुमोच महाव्रते ते भीष्मं विविशुस्तूर्णं स्वर्णपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः

In that battle, Śikhaṇḍī released arrows towards the one who was great in his vows. These were gold-tufted and sharpened on stone and swiftly penetrated Bhīṣma.

उस युद्ध में शिखंडी ने उस व्यक्ति की ओर बाण छोड़े जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में महान था। ये सोने से जड़े हुए थे और पत्थर पर नुकीले थे और तेजी से भीष्म में घुस गए।

ततः किरीटी संरब्धो भीष्ममेवाभ्यवर्तत शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य धनुश्चास्य समाच्छिनत्

Placing Śikhaṇḍī at the forefront, Kirīṭī impetuously attacked Bhīṣma and severed his bow.

शिखंडी को सबसे आगे रखकर, किरीटी ने तेजी से भीष्म पर हमला किया और उनका धनुष तोड़ दिया।

भीष्मस्य धनुषश्छेदं नामृष्यन्त महारथाः द्रोणश्च कृतवर्मा च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः

When Bhīṣma's bow was sliced down, the mahāratha-s—Droṇa, Kritavarma, Saindhava Jayadratha,

जब भीष्म का धनुष कट गया, तो महारथ-द्रोण, कृतवर्मा, सैंधव जयद्रथ,

भूरिश्रवाः शलः शल्यो भगदत्तस्तथैव च सप्तैते परमक्रुद्धाः किरीटिनमभिद्रुताः

Bhurishrava, Śala, Śalya and Bhagadatta could not tolerate this. Extremely enraged, these seven attacked Kirīṭī.

भूरिश्रवा, शाल, शाल्य और भगदत्त यह सहन नहीं कर सके। अत्यधिक क्रोधित होकर इन सातों ने किरीटी पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

उत्तमास्त्राणि दिव्यानि दर्शयन्तो महारथाः अभिपेतुर्भृशं क्रुद्धाश्छादयन्त स्म पाण्डवान्

The mahāratha-s displayed supreme and divine weapons. They attacked in great anger and enveloped Pāṇḍava.

महारथियों ने सर्वोच्च और दिव्य हथियारों का प्रदर्शन किया। उन्होंने अत्यंत क्रोध में आकर आक्रमण किया और पांडवों को घेर लिया।

तेषामापततां शब्दः शुश्रुवे फल्गुनं प्रति उद्वृत्तानां यथा शब्दः समुद्राणां युगक्षये

As they advanced towards Phālguna, sounds could be heard. It was like the sound being raised by the oceans at the time of the destruction of a yuga.

जैसे-जैसे वे फाल्गुन की ओर आगे बढ़े, आवाजें सुनाई देने लगीं। यह एक युग के विनाश के समय महासागरों द्वारा की जा रही ध्वनि के समान था।

हतानयत गृह्णीत युध्यतापि च कृन्तत इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति

"Bring forward. Grasp. Fight. Slice off." Such were the tumultuous sounds as they advanced towards Phālguna's chariot.

"आगे लाओ। समझो। लड़ो। काट दो।" जैसे ही वे फाल्गुन के रथ की ओर बढ़े, ऐसी कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनियाँ थीं।

तं शब्दं तुमुलं श्रुत्वा पाण्डवानां महारथाः अभ्यधावन्परीप्सन्तः फल्गुनं भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! On hearing that dreadful sound, the Pāṇḍava mahāratha-s attacked, so as to protect Phālguna.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस भयानक ध्वनि को सुनकर पांडव महारथियों ने फाल्गुन की रक्षा के लिए आक्रमण कर दिया।

सात्यकिर्भीमसेनश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः विराटद्रुपदौ चोभौ राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः

Sātyaki, Bhīmasena, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, Drupada, rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca

सात्यकि, भीमसेन, पार्श्वत धृष्टद्युम्न, विराट, द्रुपद, राक्षस घटोत्कच

अभिमन्युश्च संक्रुद्धः सप्तैते क्रोधमूर्छिताः समभ्यधावंस्त्वरिताश्चित्रकार्मुकधारिणः

and Abhimanyu—these seven were enraged and became senseless with anger. They wielded colourful bows and swiftly advanced.

और अभिमन्यु- ये सातों क्रोधित हो गये और क्रोध से मूर्छित हो गये। उन्होंने रंगीन धनुष लहराये और तेजी से आगे बढ़े।

तेषां समभवद्युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् संग्रामे भरतश्रेष्ठ देवानां दानवैरिव

The battle that commenced was dreadful and made the body hair stand up. O best of the Bhārata lineage! It was like the battle between the gods and the dānava-s.

जो युद्ध शुरू हुआ वह भयानक था और शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! यह देवताओं और दानवों के बीच युद्ध जैसा था।

शिखण्डी तु रथश्रेष्ठो रक्ष्यमाणः किरीटिना अविध्यद्दशभिर्भीष्मं छिन्नधन्वानमाहवे सारथिं दशभिश्चास्य ध्वजं चैकेन चिच्छिदे

Śikhaṇḍī, best among rāṭha-s, was protected by Kirīṭī and in that battle, after Bhīṣma's bow had been severed, pierced him with ten arrows. He struck down his charioteer with ten and his standard with one.

रथियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ शिखंडी की रक्षा किरीटी ने की थी और उस युद्ध में, भीष्म का धनुष कट जाने के बाद, उसे दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया था। उसने दस से उसके सारथी को और एक से उसके ध्वज को मार गिराया।

सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादाय गाङ्गेयो वेगवत्तरम् तदप्यस्य शितैर्भल्लैस्त्रिभिश्चिच्छेद फल्गुनः

Gāṅgeya grasped a bow that was more powerful. However, Phālguna sliced that down with a sharp and broad-headed arrow.

गांगेय ने एक धनुष उठाया जो अधिक शक्तिशाली था। हालाँकि, फाल्गुन ने एक तेज़ और चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से उसे काट डाला।

एवं स पाण्डवः क्रुद्ध आत्तमात्तं पुनः पुनः धनुर्भीष्मस्य चिच्छेद सव्यसाची परंतपः

Pāṇḍava was enraged and one after another, Savyasachi, the scorcher of enemies, severed every bow that Bhīṣma took up.

पांडव क्रोधित हो गए और एक के बाद एक, शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले सव्यसाची ने भीष्म द्वारा उठाए गए सभी धनुषों को तोड़ दिया।

स च्छिन्नधन्वा संक्रुद्धः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् शक्तिं जग्राह संक्रुद्धो गिरीणामपि दारणीम् तां च चिक्षेप संक्रुद्धः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति

When the bows were severed, he became wrathful and licked the corners of his mouth. In great wrath, he grasped a javelin that was capable of shattering mountains. In anger, he hurled this towards Phālguna's chariot.

जब धनुष कट गये तो वह क्रोधित हो उठा और उसने अपने मुँह के कोनों को चाट लिया। बड़े क्रोध में उसने एक ऐसा भाला पकड़ लिया जो पहाड़ों को तोड़ने में सक्षम था। क्रोध में आकर उन्होंने इसे फाल्गुन के रथ की ओर फेंक दिया।

तामापतन्तीं संप्रेक्ष्य ज्वलन्तीमशनीमिव समादत्त शितान्भल्लान्पञ्च पाण्डवनन्दनः

On seeing it descend, like the flaming vajra, the descendant of the Pāṇḍava lineage brought the javelin down with five sharp and broad-headed arrows.

इसे नीचे उतरते देख, ज्वलंत वज्र की तरह, पांडव वंश के वंशज ने पांच तेज और चौड़े सिर वाले तीरों के साथ भाले को नीचे गिरा दिया।

तस्य चिच्छेद तां शक्तिं पञ्चधा पञ्चभिः शरैः संक्रुद्धो भरतश्रेष्ठ भीष्मबाहुबलेरिताम्

O best of the Bhārata lineage! When that javelin, hurled angrily by Bhīṣma's powerful arms, was severed with five arrows by the enraged Kirīṭī,

हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! जब भीष्म की शक्तिशाली भुजाओं से क्रोधपूर्वक फेंका गया वह भाला क्रोधित किरीटी द्वारा पाँच बाणों से काट दिया गया,

सा पपात परिच्छिन्ना संक्रुद्धेन किरीटिना मेघवृन्दपरिभ्रष्टा विच्छिन्नेव शतह्रदा

it was shattered and fell down on the ground, like lightning dislodged from a mās-s of clouds.

वह चकनाचूर हो गया और जमीन पर गिर गया, जैसे बादलों के ढेर से बिजली टूटकर गिर गई हो।

छिन्नां तां शक्तिमालोक्य भीष्मः क्रोधसमन्वितः अचिन्तयद्रणे वीरो बुद्ध्या परपुरंजयः

On seeing that the javelin had fallen down, Bhīṣma was overcome with anger. In the battle, the brave and intelligent one, the destroyer of the cities of enemies, began to think.

यह देखकर कि भाला नीचे गिर गया, भीष्म क्रोध से भर गये। युद्ध में शत्रुओं के नगरों को नष्ट करने वाला वह वीर और बुद्धिमान विचार करने लगा।

शक्तोऽहं धनुषैकेन निहन्तुं सर्वपाण्डवान् यद्येषां न भवेद्गोप्ता विष्वक्सेनो महाबलः

"I am capable of slaying all the Pāṇḍava-s with a single bow, had the immensely strong Viṣvaksena not been their protector now.

"मैं एक ही धनुष से सभी पांडवों को मारने में सक्षम हूं, यदि अत्यंत बलशाली विश्वक्सेन अब उनके रक्षक न होते।

कारणद्वयमास्थाय नाहं योत्स्यामि पाण्डवैः अवध्यत्वाच्च पाण्डूनां स्त्रीभावाच्च शिखण्डिनः

There are two reasons for me not to fight with the Pāṇḍava-s—the Pāṇḍu-s cannot be killed and Śikhaṇḍī's feminity.

मेरे लिए पांडवों से युद्ध न करने के दो कारण हैं-पांडुओं को मारा नहीं जा सकता और शिखंडी की स्त्रीत्व।

पित्रा तुष्टेन मे पूर्वं यदा कालीमुदावहत् स्वच्छन्दमरणं दत्तमवध्यत्वं रणे तथा तस्मान्मृत्युमहं मन्ये प्राप्तकालमिवात्मनः

In earlier times, when my father married Kālī, my father was satisfied and granted me the boon that I would be invincible in battle, except when I decided to die myself. I think the time has come for me to decide on my death."

पहले के समय में, जब मेरे पिता ने काली से विवाह किया, तो मेरे पिता संतुष्ट हो गए और मुझे वरदान दिया कि मैं युद्ध में अजेय रहूंगी, सिवाय इसके कि जब मैंने खुद मरने का फैसला किया हो। मुझे लगता है कि अब समय आ गया है कि मैं अपनी मौत पर फैसला लूं।''

एवं ज्ञात्वा व्यवसितं भीष्मस्यामिततेजसः ऋषयो वसवश्चैव वियत्स्था भीष्ममब्रुवन्

On learning that this was the decision of the infinitely energetic Bhīṣma, the riṣi-s and the Vasu-s, who were stationed in the sky, spoke these words to Bhīṣma.

यह जानकर कि यह असीम ऊर्जावान भीष्म का निर्णय था, ऋषियों और वसुओं ने, जो आकाश में स्थित थे, भीष्म से ये शब्द कहे।

यत्ते व्यवसितं वीर अस्माकं सुमहत्प्रियम् तत्कुरुष्व महेष्वास युद्धाद्बुद्धिं निवर्तय

"O brave one! We are extremely delighted with the decision you have taken. O great archer! Act in accordance with your decision and withdraw from the battle."

"हे वीर! तुमने जो निर्णय लिया है, उससे हमें अत्यंत प्रसन्नता हुई है। हे महान धनुर्धर! अपने निर्णय के अनुसार कार्य करो और युद्ध से हट जाओ।"

तस्य वाक्यस्य निधने प्रादुरासीच्छिवोऽनिलः अनुलोमः सुगन्धी च पृषतैश्च समन्वितः

When those words were spoken, an auspicious and fragrant breeze began to blow. In all the directions, it was moistened with drops of water that smelled nice.

जब वे शब्द बोले गये तो शुभ एवं सुगन्धित वायु बहने लगी। सभी दिशाओं में पानी की बूंदों से नमी आ गई थी, जिससे अच्छी खुशबू आ रही थी।

देवदुन्दुभयश्चैव संप्रणेदुर्महास्वनाः पपात पुष्पवृष्टिश्च भीष्मस्योपरि पार्थिव

The drums of the gods were sounded with a great roar. O king! A shower of flowers fell down on Bhīṣma.

देवताओं के नगाड़े बड़ी गर्जना के साथ बजने लगे। हे राजा! भीष्म पर फूलों की वर्षा हुई।

न च तच्छुश्रुवे कश्चित्तेषां संवदतां नृप ऋते भीष्मं महाबाहुं मां चापि मुनितेजसा

O king! But the words spoken were not heard by anyone there, with the exception of the mighty-armed Bhīṣma and me, because of the energetic sage.

हे राजा! लेकिन बोले गए शब्द ऊर्जावान ऋषि के कारण, महाबाहु भीष्म और मेरे अलावा, किसी ने भी वहां नहीं सुने थे।

संभ्रमश्च महानासीत्त्रिदशानां विशां पते पतिष्यति रथाद्भीष्मे सर्वलोकप्रिये तदा

O lord of the earth! There was great agitation among the thirty gods, at the prospect of Bhīṣma, beloved of all the worlds, falling down from his chariot.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! समस्त लोकों के प्रिय भीष्म के अपने रथ से गिरने की आशंका से तीस देवताओं में बड़ी व्याकुलता मच गई।

इति देवगणानां च श्रुत्वा वाक्यं महामनाः ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो बीभत्सुं नाभ्यवर्तत भिद्यमानः शितैर्बाणैः सर्वावरणभेदिभिः

Having heard the words of the masses of gods, the great-minded one, Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, dashed towards Bībhatsu, though he had been pierced by sharp arrows that were capable of penetrating every kind of armour.

देवताओं की भीड़ की बातें सुनकर शांतनु के पुत्र महामनस्वी भीष्म बीभत्सु की ओर झपटे, यद्यपि वह तीखे बाणों से घायल हो चुका था जो हर प्रकार के कवच को भेदने में सक्षम थे।

शिखण्डी तु महाराज भरतानां पितामहम् आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो नवभिर्निशितैः शरैः

O great king! Śikhaṇḍī angrily struck the grandfather of the Bhārata-s in the chest with nine sharp arrows.

हे महान राजा! शिखंडी ने क्रोधपूर्वक भरत-पितामह की छाती में नौ तीखे बाणों से प्रहार किया।

स तेनाभिहतः संख्ये भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः नाकम्पत महाराज क्षितिकम्पे यथाचलः

In the battle, Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kuru-s, was wounded by him. O great king! But he did not tremble and was like a mountain during an earthquake.

युद्ध में कौरवों के पितामह भीष्म उनके द्वारा घायल हो गये। हे महान राजा! परन्तु वह नहीं कांपा, और भूकम्प के समय पहाड़ के समान हो गया।

ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर्व्याक्षिपन्गाण्डिवं धनुः गाङ्गेयं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समर्पयत्

Bībhatsu laughed and drew back the Gāṇḍīva bow. He pierced Gāṅgeya with twenty-five kṣurapra-s.

बिभात्सु हँसा और गाण्डीव धनुष वापस खींच लिया। उन्होंने गांगेय को पच्चीस क्षुरप्रों से छेद दिया।

पुनः शरशतेनैनं त्वरमाणो धनंजयः सर्वगात्रेषु संक्रुद्धः सर्वमर्मस्वताडयत्

Dhanañjayā was enraged and again swiftly struck him all over the body with one hundred arrows that penetrated all his inner organs.

धनंजय क्रोधित हो गया और उसने फिर से तेजी से उसके पूरे शरीर पर एक सौ बाणों से वार किया, जो उसके सभी आंतरिक अंगों में घुस गए।

एवमन्यैरपि भृशं वध्यमानो महारणे न चक्रुस्ते रुजं तस्य रुक्मपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः

In the great battle, the others also wounded him severely. But these gold-tufted arrows, sharpened on stone, did not cause him the slightest bit of pain.

महान युद्ध में, अन्य लोगों ने भी उसे गंभीर रूप से घायल कर दिया। लेकिन पत्थर पर नुकीले इन सोने के गुच्छों वाले तीरों से उसे थोड़ी सी भी पीड़ा नहीं हुई।

ततः किरीटी संरब्धो भीष्ममेवाभ्यवर्तत शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य धनुश्चास्य समाच्छिनत्

Placing Śikhaṇḍī at the forefront, the wrathful Kirīṭī attacked Bhīṣma and severed his bow once again.

शिखंडी को सबसे आगे रखकर, क्रोधित किरीटी ने भीष्म पर हमला किया और एक बार फिर उनका धनुष तोड़ दिया।

अथैनं दशभिर्विद्ध्वा ध्वजमेकेन चिच्छिदे सारथिं विशिखैश्चास्य दशभिः समकम्पयत्

He pierced him with ten arrows and sliced down his standard with one. He struck his charioteer with ten arrows and made him tremble.

उसने दस बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया और एक से उसके ध्वज को काट डाला। उसने दस बाणों से उसके सारथि को घायल करके उसे कम्पित कर दिया।

सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादत्त गाङ्गेयो बलवत्तरम् तदप्यस्य शितैर्भल्लैस्त्रिधा त्रिभिरुपानुदत् निमेषान्तरमात्रेण आत्तमात्तं महारणे

Gāṅgeya took up another bow that was stronger still. In that great battle, in the twinkling of an eye and as soon as that other bow was taken up,

एवमस्य धनूंष्याजौ चिच्छेद सुबहून्यपि ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो बीभत्सुं नाभ्यवर्तत

Dhanañjayā severed it into three with sharp and broad-headed arrows. In this fashion, he severed many bows. At this, Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, determined that he would not fight with Bībhatsu any more.

धनंजय ने तीखे और चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों से उसे तीन भागों में विभाजित कर दिया। इस प्रकार उसने अनेक धनुष तोड़ दिये। इस पर शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने निश्चय किया कि वह अब बीभत्सु के साथ युद्ध नहीं करेंगे।

अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समर्दयत् सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासो दुःशासनमभाषत

However, he was pierced by twenty-five kṣudraka-s and thus pierced, the great archer spoke to Duḥśāsana.

"This mahāratha Pāṇḍava Pārtha is enraged in the battle. In this encounter, he has shot many thousands of arrows towards me.

"यह महारथी पाण्डव पार्थ युद्ध में क्रोधित हो गया है। इस मुठभेड़ में उसने मेरी ओर कई हजार बाण छोड़े हैं।"

न चैष शक्यः समरे जेतुं वज्रभृता अपि न चापि सहिता वीरा देवदानवराक्षसाः मां चैव शक्ता निर्जेतुं किमु मर्त्याः सुदुर्बलाः

No one is capable of vanquishing him in battle, not even the wielder of the vajra. No brave one is capable of defeating me, the gods, the dānava-s and the rākṣasa-s, not to speak of extremely weak mortals."

कोई भी उसे युद्ध में पराजित करने में सक्षम नहीं है, यहां तक ​​कि वज्र धारण करने वाला भी नहीं। कोई भी शूरवीर मुझे, देवताओं, दानवों और राक्षसों को पराजित करने में सक्षम नहीं है, बेहद कमजोर मनुष्यों की तो बात ही छोड़ दें।"

एवं तयोः संवदतोः फल्गुनो निशितैः शरैः शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य भीष्मं विव्याध संयुगे

While he was speaking thus, Phālguna placed Śikhaṇḍī in the forefront of the battle and pierced Bhīṣma with sharp arrows.

जब वह इस प्रकार बोल रहा था, फाल्गुन ने शिखंडी को युद्ध में सबसे आगे रखा और भीष्म को तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

ततो दुःशासनं भूयः स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत अतिविद्धः शितैर्बाणैर्भृशं गाण्डीवधन्वना

Bhīṣma was severely pierced by the sharp arrows released by the wielder of Gāṇḍīva. He smiled and spoke to Duḥśāsana again.

गांडीवधारी द्वारा छोड़े गए तीखे बाणों से भीष्म गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए। वह मुस्कुराया और दुःशासन से फिर बोला।

वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शाः शिताग्राः संप्रवेशिताः विमुक्ता अव्यवच्छिन्ना नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

"These are like vajra and thunder to the touch. They are sharp at the tip and have been released well. They have been shot in a continuous stream. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

"ये स्पर्श करने के लिए वज्र और वज्र के समान हैं। वे नोक पर तेज हैं और अच्छी तरह से छोड़े गए हैं। उन्हें एक सतत धारा में चलाया गया है। ये शिखंडी के तीर नहीं हो सकते हैं।

निकृन्तमाना मर्माणि दृढावरणभेदिनः मुसलानीव मे घ्नन्ति नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

They have penetrated my firm armour and have mangled my inner organs. They have struck me with the force of clubs. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

उन्होंने मेरे दृढ़ कवच में प्रवेश किया है और मेरे आंतरिक अंगों को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया है। उन्होंने मुझे डंडों के बल से मारा है। ये शिखंडी के बाण नहीं हो सकते।

ब्रह्मदण्डसमस्पर्शा वज्रवेगा दुरासदाः मम प्राणानारुजन्ति नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

They are like Brahmā's staff to the touch. They possess the force of the vajra and are impossible to resist. They are robbing me of my life. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

स्पर्श करने पर वे ब्रह्मा की लाठी के समान हैं। उनके पास वज्र का बल है और उनका विरोध करना असंभव है। वे मुझसे मेरा जीवन छीन रहे हैं। ये शिखंडी के बाण नहीं हो सकते।

भुजगा इव संक्रुद्धा लेलिहाना विषोल्बणाः ममाविशन्ति मर्माणि नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

They are like angry serpents, full of virulent poison and with their tongues protruding. They are penetrating my inner organs. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

वे क्रोधित साँपों के समान हैं, जो ज़हरीले ज़हर से भरे हुए हैं और उनकी जीभ बाहर निकली हुई है। वे मेरे आंतरिक अंगों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं। ये शिखंडी के बाण नहीं हो सकते।

नाशयन्तीव मे प्राणान्यमदूता इवाहिताः गदापरिघसंस्पर्शा नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

They are destroying my life, like messengers sent by Yāma. They are like clubs and maces to the touch. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

वे यम के भेजे हुए दूतों की तरह मेरे जीवन को नष्ट कर रहे हैं। वे स्पर्श में गदाओं और गदाओं के समान हैं। ये शिखंडी के बाण नहीं हो सकते।

कृन्तन्ति मम गात्राणि माघमासे गवामिव अर्जुनस्य इमे बाणा नेमे बाणाः शिखण्डिनः

They are slicing through my body, like the month of Māgha distresses cattle. These are Arjuna's arrows. These cannot be Śikhaṇḍī's arrows.

वे मेरे शरीर को ऐसे काट रहे हैं, जैसे माघ का महीना मवेशियों को परेशान करता है। ये अर्जुन के बाण हैं. ये शिखंडी के बाण नहीं हो सकते।

सर्वे ह्यपि न मे दुःखं कुर्युरन्ये नराधिपाः वीरं गण्डीवधन्वानमृते जिष्णुं कपिध्वजम्

All the kings together cannot cause me any grief. The only exception is the brave Jiṣṇu, the wielder of Gāṇḍīva and with the monkey on his banner."

सभी राजा मिलकर भी मुझे कोई दुःख नहीं पहुँचा सकते। एकमात्र अपवाद बहादुर जिष्णु हैं, जो गाण्डीव को धारण करने वाले और अपनी ध्वजा पर वानर के साथ हैं।"

इति ब्रुवञ्शांतनवो दिधक्षुरिव पाण्डवम् सविष्फुलिङ्गां दीप्ताग्रां शक्तिं चिक्षेप भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having spoken this, Śāntanu's son hurled a javelin, as if he was going to burn up Pāṇḍava. It was flaming at the tip and had sparks throughout.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इतना कहकर शांतनु के पुत्र ने भाला फेंका, मानो वह पांडवों को जला डालेगा। वह सिरे पर धधक रही थी और चारों ओर चिंगारी थी।

तामस्य विशिखैश्छित्त्वा त्रिधा त्रिभिरपातयत् पश्यतां कुरुवीराणां सर्वेषां तत्र भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! While all the brave ones among the Kuru-s looked on, he used sharp arrows to sever it into three and made the three parts fall down.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब कौरवों में से सभी वीर देखते रह गये, तब उसने तीखे बाणों से उसे तीन भागों में विभाजित कर दिया और तीनों भागों को नीचे गिरा दिया।

चर्माथादत्त गाङ्गेयो जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् खड्गं चान्यतरं प्रेप्सुर्मृत्योरग्रे जयाय वा

At this, Gāṅgeya grasped a shield that was made of gold and a sword. He was determined to obtain victory, or go to the world of the hereafter.

इस पर, गांगेय ने एक ढाल जो सोने से बनी थी और एक तलवार पकड़ ली। वह विजय प्राप्त करने, या परलोक जाने के लिए दृढ़ संकल्पित था।

But before he could get down from his chariot, the armoured one shattered the shield into a hundred pieces and it was extraordinary.

लेकिन इससे पहले कि वह अपने रथ से उतर पाता, बख्तरबंद ने ढाल को सौ टुकड़ों में तोड़ दिया और यह असाधारण था।

विनद्योच्चैः सिंह इव स्वान्यनीकान्यचोदयत् अभिद्रवत गाङ्गेयं मा वोऽस्तु भयमण्वपि

He roared like a lion and incited his soldiers. "Attack Gāṅgeya. Do not have the slightest bit of fear."

उसने शेर की तरह दहाड़ कर अपने सैनिकों को भड़का दिया। "गांगेय पर आक्रमण करो। तनिक भी भय मत करो।"

अथ ते तोमरैः प्रासैर्बाणौघैश्च समन्ततः पट्टिशैश्च सनिस्त्रिंशैर्नानाप्रहरणैस्तथा

With javelins, lances, masses of arrows from every direction, spears, swords, many other weapons,

भाले, भाले, हर दिशा से तीरों की भीड़, भाले, तलवारें, कई अन्य हथियारों के साथ,

वत्सदन्तैश्च भल्लैश्च तमेकमभिदुद्रुवुः सिंहनादस्ततो घोरः पाण्डवानामजायत

vatsadanta-s and broad-headed arrows, all of them attacked the one who was fighting single-handed. The Pāṇḍava-s let out terrible roars, like lions.

वत्सदंत और चौड़े सिर वाले बाण, उन सभी ने अकेले ही लड़ने वाले पर हमला कर दिया। पाण्डवों ने सिंहों के समान भयंकर दहाड़ें छोड़ीं।

तथैव तव पुत्राश्च राजन्भीष्मजयैषिणः तमेकमभ्यवर्तन्त सिंहनादांश्च नेदिरे

O king! Your sons wished to see that Bhīṣma was victorious. They surrounded him and roared like lions.

हे राजा! आपके पुत्र यह देखना चाहते थे कि भीष्म विजयी हों। उन्होंने उसे घेर लिया और सिंहों की भाँति गरजने लगे।

तत्रासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं तावकानां परैः सह दशमेऽहनि राजेन्द्र भीष्मार्जुनसमागमे

O Indra among kings! On the tenth day, when Bhīṣma and Arjuna clashed, there was a dreadful battle between those on your side and those of the enemy.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! दसवें दिन, जब भीष्म और अर्जुन भिड़े, तो आपके पक्ष और शत्रु पक्ष के बीच भयानक युद्ध हुआ।

आसीद्गाङ्ग इवावर्तो मुहूर्तमुदधेरिव सैन्यानां युध्यमानानां निघ्नतामितरेतरम्

In a short while, there was a whirlpool, like when Gāṅga meets the ocean. The soldiers fought, wishing to kill each other.

थोड़ी ही देर में गंगा के सागर में मिलने के समान भँवर आ गया। सैनिक एक-दूसरे को मार डालने की इच्छा से लड़ने लगे।

अगम्यरूपा पृथिवी शोणिताक्ता तदाभवत् समं च विषमं चैव न प्राज्ञायत किंचन

Because it was covered with blood, the earth became difficult to cross. It was impossible to distinguish the plain ground from the uneven.

चूँकि वह रक्त से लथपथ थी, इसलिए पृथ्वी को पार करना कठिन हो गया। समतल ज़मीन को ऊबड़-खाबड़ ज़मीन से अलग करना असंभव था।

योधानामयुतं हत्वा तस्मिन्स दशमेऽहनि अतिष्ठदाहवे भीष्मो भिद्यमानेषु मर्मसु

On the tenth day, stationed in that battle, though he was pierced in his vital organs, Bhīṣma killed ten thousand warriors.

दसवें दिन, उस युद्ध में तैनात, अपने महत्वपूर्ण अंगों में छेद होने के बावजूद, भीष्म ने दस हजार योद्धाओं को मार डाला।

ततः सेनामुखे तस्मिन्स्थितः पार्थो धनंजयः मध्येन कुरुसैन्यानां द्रावयामास वाहिनीम्

In a similar way, Pārtha Dhanañjayā was stationed at the forefront of the army and drove away the soldiers from the centre of the Kuru army.

इसी तरह, पार्थ धनंजय सेना में सबसे आगे तैनात थे और उन्होंने कुरु सेना के केंद्र से सैनिकों को खदेड़ दिया।

वयं श्वेतहयाद्भीताः कुन्तीपुत्राद्धनंजयात् पीड्यमानाः शितैः शस्त्रैः प्रद्रवाम महारणात्

We were scared of Dhanañjayā, Kuntī's son, who was carried on white horses. We were oppressed by his sharp arrows and fled from the great battle.

हम कुंती के पुत्र धनंजय से डरते थे, जो सफेद घोड़ों पर ले जाया जाता था। उसके तीखे बाणों से हम पीड़ित हो गये और उस महान युद्ध से भाग गये।

सौवीराः कितवाः प्राच्याः प्रतीच्योदीच्यमालवाः अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः

The Sauvīra-s, the Kitava-s, those from the east, those from the west, those from the north, the Mālavā-s, the Abhīṣāha-s, the Śūrasena-s, the Śibi-s, the Vasatayas,

सौवीर-एस, कितव-एस, पूर्व से, वे पश्चिम से, वे उत्तर से, मालव-एस, अभिषेक-एस, शूरसेन-एस, शिबि-एस, वसत्यस,

शाल्वाश्रयास्त्रिगर्ताश्च अम्बष्ठाः केकयैः सह द्वादशैते जनपदाः शरार्ता व्रणपीडिताः संग्रामे न जहुर्भीष्मं युध्यमानं किरीटिना

the Śālva-s, the Śrāya-s, the Trigarta-s, the Ambaṣṭha-s and the Kekaya-s—warriors from these twelve countries were wounded and oppressed by the arrows, while Kirīṭī was fighting in that battle, wishing to kill Bhīṣma.

शाल्व-श, श्रय-स, त्रिगर्त-स, अंबष्ठ-और केकय-इन बारह देशों के योद्धा तीरों से घायल और पीड़ित थे, जबकि किरीटी उस युद्ध में भीष्म को मारने की इच्छा से लड़ रहा था।

ततस्तमेकं बहवः परिवार्य समन्ततः परिकाल्य कुरून्सर्वाञ्शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्

The single one was surrounded by many from all directions. They defeated all the other Kuru-s and showered him with arrows.

जो अकेला था उसे चारों ओर से अनेकों ने घेर लिया। उन्होंने अन्य सभी कौरवों को हरा दिया और उस पर बाणों की वर्षा की।

निपातयत गृह्णीत विध्यताथ च कर्षत इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दो राजन्भीष्मरथं प्रति

"Bring down. Seize. Pierce. Tear." O king! These and other tumultuous sounds were heard around Bhīṣma's chariot.

"नीचे लाओ। पकड़ो। छेदो। फाड़ दो।" हे राजा! ये और अन्य कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनियाँ भीष्म के रथ के चारों ओर सुनाई दे रही थीं।

अभिहत्य शरौघैस्तं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः न तस्यासीदनिर्भिन्नं गात्रेष्वङ्गुलमात्रकम्

Having slain hundreds and thousands with his shower of arrows, there wasn't even the span of a single finger on his body that was not mangled.

अपने बाणों की वर्षा से सैकड़ों-हजारों को मार डालने के बाद भी उनके शरीर पर एक अंगुली भी ऐसी नहीं थी जो क्षत-विक्षत न हो।

एवं विभो तव पिता शरैर्विशकलीकृतः शिताग्रैः फल्गुनेनाजौ प्राक्शिराः प्रापतद्रथात् किंचिच्छेषे दिनकरे पुत्राणां तव पश्यताम्

While your sons looked on, thus the lord, your father, was wounded with sharp-tipped arrows released by Phālguna and fell down from his chariot. There was a little bit of the day left.

जब आपके पुत्र देख रहे थे, तब आपके पिता भगवान फाल्गुन द्वारा छोड़े गए तीखे तीरों से घायल हो गए और अपने रथ से नीचे गिर गए। दिन का थोड़ा समय बाकी था.

हा हेति दिवि देवानां पार्थिवानां च सर्वशः पतमाने रथाद्भीष्मे बभूव सुमहान्स्वनः

When Bhīṣma fell down from his chariot, great sounds of lamentation were heard from the gods in heaven and the kings in every direction.

जब भीष्म अपने रथ से गिर पड़े, तो स्वर्ग में देवताओं और सभी दिशाओं के राजाओं के विलाप की महान ध्वनियाँ सुनाई दीं।

तं पतन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य महात्मानं पितामहम् सह भीष्मेण सर्वेषां प्रापतन्हृदयानि नः

On seeing that the great-souled grandfather had fallen down, together with Bhīṣma, all our hearts also fell down.

यह देखकर कि महात्मा पितामह भीष्म के साथ-साथ गिर पड़े हैं, हम सबके हृदय भी दुःखी हो गये।

स पपात महाबाहुर्वसुधामनुनादयन् इन्द्रध्वज इवोत्सृष्टः केतुः सर्वधनुष्मताम् धरणीं नास्पृशच्चापि शरसंघैः समाचितः

When the mighty-armed one fell down, the earth seemed to roar. The great archer fell down, like an uprooted pole that has been erected in Indra's honour. Because he was covered with a large number of arrows, he did not touch the ground.

जब वह महाबाहु गिरा तो पृथ्वी गर्जना करने लगी। महान धनुर्धर इंद्र के सम्मान में खड़े किये गये खम्भे की भाँति नीचे गिर पड़ा। क्योंकि वह बड़ी संख्या में बाणों से ढका हुआ था, इसलिए वह जमीन को नहीं छू रहा था।

शरतल्पे महेष्वासं शयानं पुरुषर्षभम् रथात्प्रपतितं चैनं दिव्यो भावः समाविशत्

The great archer, bull among men, was supine on a bed of arrows. When he fell down from the chariot, a divine essence permeated him.

महान धनुर्धर, मनुष्यों में बैल, बाणों की शय्या पर लेटा हुआ था। जब वह रथ से नीचे गिरे तो उनमें एक दिव्य तत्व व्याप्त हो गया।

अभ्यवर्षत पर्जन्यः प्राकम्पत च मेदिनी पतन्स ददृशे चापि खर्वितं च दिवाकरम्

The clouds showered rain and the earth trembled. When he fell down, it was seen that the sun was diminished.

बादलों ने वर्षा की और पृथ्वी कांप उठी। जब वह नीचे गिरे तो देखा गया कि सूर्य की रोशनी कम हो गई है।

संज्ञां चैवालभद्वीरः कालं संचिन्त्य भारत अन्तरिक्षे च शुश्राव दिव्यां वाचं समन्ततः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The brave one did not allow his senses to depart, but thought about the right time. He heard divine voices from everywhere in the sky.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस वीर ने अपने होश-हवास को फूटने नहीं दिया, बल्कि उचित समय के बारे में सोचा। उसे आकाश में हर जगह से दिव्य आवाजें सुनाई दीं।

कथं महात्मा गाङ्गेयः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः कालं कर्ता नरव्याघ्रः संप्राप्ते दक्षिणायने

"Why should the great-souled Gāṅgeya, tiger among men and the supreme among those who wield all weapons, decide on a time that is dakṣiṇāyana?"

"महात्मा गांगेय, मनुष्यों में बाघ और सभी हथियार चलाने वालों में सर्वोच्च को दक्षिणायन का समय क्यों तय करना चाहिए?"

स्थितोऽस्मीति च गाङ्गेयस्तच्छ्रुत्वा वाक्यमब्रवीत् धारयामास च प्राणान्पतितोऽपि हि भूतले उत्तरायणमन्विच्छन्भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः

On hearing these words, Gāṅgeya replied, "I am still here." Though he had fallen down on the ground, he retained his life. Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kuru-s, wished to wait till uttarāyaṇa.

ये शब्द सुनकर गांगेय ने उत्तर दिया, "मैं अभी भी यहाँ हूँ।" हालाँकि वह ज़मीन पर गिर गया था, फिर भी उसकी जान बच गयी। कुरुवंश के पितामह भीष्म उत्तरायण तक प्रतीक्षा करना चाहते थे।

तस्य तन्मतमाज्ञाय गङ्गा हिमवतः सुता महर्षीन्हंसरूपेण प्रेषयामास तत्र वै

Knowing his decision, Gāṅga, the daughter of the Himālaya-s, sent maharṣi-s to him, in the form of swans.

उनके निर्णय को जानकर हिमालय की पुत्री गंगा ने हंसों के रूप में महर्षियों को उनके पास भेजा।

ततः संपातिनो हंसास्त्वरिता मानसौकसः आजग्मुः सहिता द्रष्टुं भीष्मं कुरुपितामहम् यत्र शेते नरश्रेष्ठः शरतल्पे पितामहः

Adopting the forms of swans from Mānasa, they swifty arrived to see Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kuru-s. The grandfather, the best of men, was lying down on his bed of arrows.

मानस से हंसों का रूप धारण करके, वे कुरु-वंश के पितामह भीष्म को देखने के लिए तेजी से पहुंचे। पुरूषोत्तम पितामह बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे हुए थे।

ते तु भीष्मं समासाद्य मुनयो हंसरूपिणः अपश्यञ्शरतल्पस्थं भीष्मं कुरुपितामहम्

In the form of swans, the sages approached Bhīṣma. They saw Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kuru-s, on his bed of arrows.

हंसों के रूप में ऋषि भीष्म के पास पहुंचे। उन्होंने कुरुवंश के पितामह भीष्म को उनके बाणों की शय्या पर देखा।

ते तं दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम् गाङ्गेयं भरतश्रेष्ठं दक्षिणेन च भास्करम्

On seeing him, the great-souled ones circumambulated Gāṅgeya, the best of the Bhārata lineage. The sun was in the south.

उन्हें देखकर महात्माओं ने भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ गांगेय की परिक्रमा की। सूर्य दक्षिण दिशा में था.

इतरेतरमामन्त्र्य प्राहुस्तत्र मनीषिणः भीष्म एव महात्मा सन्संस्थाता दक्षिणायने

The learned ones spoke to each other, "Why should the great-souled Bhīṣma depart during dakṣiṇāyana?"

विद्वान लोग आपस में बात करते थे, "महात्मा भीष्म को दक्षिणायन के दौरान क्यों प्रस्थान करना चाहिए?"

इत्युक्त्वा प्रस्थितान्हंसान्दक्षिणामभितो दिशम् संप्रेक्ष्य वै महाबुद्धिश्चिन्तयित्वा च भारत

Having spoken in this way, the swans started to leave for the southern direction. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing this, the immensely intelligent one began to think.

इस प्रकार कहकर हंस दक्षिण दिशा की ओर प्रस्थान करने लगे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर परम बुद्धिमान वह सोचने लगा।

तानब्रवीच्छांतनवो नाहं गन्ता कथंचन दक्षिणावृत्त आदित्ये एतन्मे मनसि स्थितम्

Śāntanu's son then said, "I will never depart when the sun remains in the south. This is my resolution.

तब शांतनु के पुत्र ने कहा, "जब सूर्य दक्षिणायन रहेगा तब मैं कभी प्रस्थान नहीं करूंगा। यह मेरा संकल्प है।"

गमिष्यामि स्वकं स्थानमासीद्यन्मे पुरातनम् उदगावृत्त आदित्ये हंसाः सत्यं ब्रवीमि वः

I will leave for my earlier abode when the sun moves to the north. The swans have spoken the truth.

जब सूर्य उत्तरायण हो जायेगा तो मैं अपने पूर्व निवास के लिए प्रस्थान करुंगा। हंसों ने सत्य कहा है।

धारयिष्याम्यहं प्राणानुत्तरायणकाङ्क्षया ऐश्वर्यभूतः प्राणानामुत्सर्गे नियतो ह्यहम् तस्मात्प्राणान्धारयिष्ये मुमूर्षुरुदगायने

I will retain my life, wishing for uttarāyaṇa. I have always had complete control about when I would give up my life. Therefore, I will retain my life, wishing to die during the northern course.

मैं उत्तरायण की कामना करते हुए अपना जीवन बरकरार रखूंगा। मुझे हमेशा इस बात पर पूरा नियंत्रण था कि मैं कब अपनी जान दे दूँगा। इसलिए, मैं उत्तरी मार्ग के दौरान मरने की इच्छा रखते हुए अपना जीवन बरकरार रखूंगा।

यश्च दत्तो वरो मह्यं पित्रा तेन महात्मना छन्दतो मृत्युरित्येवं तस्य चास्तु वरस्तथा

This is the boon that my great-souled father granted me. His boon was that I could determine my time of death and let that come true.

यह वह वरदान है जो मेरे महात्मा पिता ने मुझे दिया था। उनका वरदान था कि मैं अपनी मृत्यु का समय निर्धारित कर सकता हूँ और उसे सच कर सकता हूँ।

धारयिष्ये ततः प्राणानुत्सर्गे नियते सति इत्युक्त्वा तांस्तदा हंसानशेत शरतल्पगः

Since I possess control, I will retain my life." Lying down on the bed of arrows, he spoke these words to the swans.

चूँकि मेरे पास नियंत्रण है, इसलिए मैं अपना जीवन सुरक्षित रखूँगा।" बाणों की शय्या पर लेटकर उसने हंसों से ये शब्द कहे।

एवं कुरूणां पतिते शृङ्गे भीष्मे महौजसि पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्चैव सिंहनादं प्रचक्रिरे

When the immensely energetic Bhīṣma, the head of the Kuru-s, fell down, the Pāṇḍava-s and the Sṛñjaya-s roared like lions.

जब कौरवों के मुखिया अत्यंत ऊर्जावान भीष्म गिर पड़े, तो पांडव और सृंजय सिंह की तरह दहाड़ने लगे।

तस्मिन्हते महासत्त्वे भरतानाममध्यमे न किंचित्प्रत्यपद्यन्त पुत्रास्ते भरतर्षभ संमोहश्चैव तुमुलः कुरूणामभवत्तदा

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! When that great spirit among the Bhāratas was brought down, your son did not know what to do. There was dreadful confusion among the Kuru-s then.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जब भरतवंशियों की वह महान भावना नष्ट हो गई, तो आपके पुत्र को समझ नहीं आया कि क्या करना चाहिए। उस समय कुरुवंशियों में भयानक संभ्रम मच गया।

नृपा दुर्योधनमुखा निःश्वस्य रुरुदुस्ततः विषादाच्च चिरं कालमतिष्ठन्विगतेन्द्रियाः

With Duryodhana at the head, the kings sighed and wept. For a very long time, they were immersed in sorrow and were deprived of their senses.

दुर्योधन को सिर पर रखकर राजा आहें भरते और रोते थे। बहुत देर तक वे दुःख में डूबे रहे और अपनी सुधबुध खो बैठे।

दध्युश्चैव महाराज न युद्धे दधिरे मनः ऊरुग्राहगृहीताश्च नाभ्यधावन्त पाण्डवान्

O great king! They were immobile and their minds were no longer on the fight. It was as if they had been grabbed by the thighs. They did not advance against the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे महान राजा! वे स्थिर थे और उनका मन अब लड़ाई में नहीं था। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों उन्हें जाँघों से पकड़ लिया गया हो। वे पांडवों के विरुद्ध आगे नहीं बढ़े।

अवध्ये शंतनोः पुत्रे हते भीष्मे महौजसि अभावः सुमहान्राजन्कुरूनागादतन्द्रितः

The immensely energetic Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, who was incapable of being killed, had been brought down. O king! The great destruction of the Kuru-s seemed certain.

शांतनु के पुत्र अत्यंत ऊर्जावान भीष्म, जो मारे जाने में असमर्थ थे, को नीचे गिरा दिया गया था। हे राजा! कुरुवंश का महाविनाश निश्चित लग रहा था।

हतप्रवीराश्च वयं निकृत्ताश्च शितैः शरैः कर्तव्यं नाभिजानीमो निर्जिताः सव्यसाचिना

The foremost among our brave ones had been brought down, mangled by sharp arrows. He had been vanquished by Savyasachi and we did not know what we should do.

हमारे सबसे बड़े वीरों को तीखे बाणों से क्षत-विक्षत कर नीचे गिरा दिया गया था। उसे सव्यसाची ने परास्त कर दिया था और हम नहीं जानते थे कि हमें क्या करना चाहिए।

पाण्डवास्तु जयं लब्ध्वा परत्र च परां गतिम् सर्वे दध्मुर्महाशङ्खाञ्शूराः परिघबाहवः सोमकाश्च सपञ्चालाः प्राहृष्यन्त जनेश्वर

The Pāṇḍava-s were victorious and obtained their supreme objective. All of those brave ones used arms like clubs to sound giant conch shells. O lord of men! The Somaka-s and the Pāñcāla-s were delighted.

पांडव विजयी हुए और उन्होंने अपना सर्वोच्च उद्देश्य प्राप्त कर लिया। उन सभी वीरों ने विशाल शंख बजाने के लिए गदा जैसे हथियारों का उपयोग किया। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! सोमक और पंचाल प्रसन्न हुए।

ततस्तूर्यसहस्रेषु नदत्सु सुमहाबलः आस्फोटयामास भृशं भीमसेनो ननर्त च

Those extremely powerful ones sounded thousands of tambourines. Bhīmasena slapped his arms and roared dreadfully.

उन अत्यंत शक्तिशाली डफों की ध्वनि हजारों की संख्या में थी। भीमसेन ने अपनी भुजाएँ पटक दीं और भयानक गर्जना की।

सेनयोरुभयोश्चापि गाङ्गेये विनिपातिते संन्यस्य वीराः शस्त्राणि प्राध्यायन्त समन्ततः

When Gāṅgeya had been brought down, the brave ones in both the armies laid down their weapons. Some lamented. Others ran around.

जब गांगेय को नीचे लाया गया, तो दोनों सेनाओं के वीरों ने अपने हथियार डाल दिये। कुछ ने शोक व्यक्त किया। अन्य लोग इधर-उधर भागे।

प्राक्रोशन्प्रापतंश्चान्ये जग्मुर्मोहं तथापरे क्षत्रं चान्येऽभ्यनिन्दन्त भीष्मं चैकेऽभ्यपूजयन्

And still others lost their senses. Others censured the life of kṣatriya-s and honoured Bhīṣma.

और तो और बाकियों के होश उड़ गए. दूसरों ने क्षत्रियों के जीवन की निंदा की और भीष्म का सम्मान किया।

ऋषयः पितरश्चैव प्रशशंसुर्महाव्रतम् भरतानां च ये पूर्वे ते चैनं प्रशशंसिरे

The riṣi-s and the ancestors praised the one who was great in his vows. The ancestors of the Bhārata-s also praised him.

जो अपने व्रतों में महान था, उसकी ऋषियों तथा पितरों ने प्रशंसा की। भरत के पूर्वजों ने भी उनकी प्रशंसा की।

महोपनिषदं चैव योगमास्थाय वीर्यवान् जपञ्शांतनवो धीमान्कालाकाङ्क्षी स्थितोऽभवत्

The valiant one resorted to the yoga described in the great Upaniṣad-s. The intelligent one meditated and remained there, wishing for the right time.

वीर ने महान उपनिषद में वर्णित योग का सहारा लिया। बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति ने ध्यान किया और सही समय की कामना करते हुए वहीं रुक गया।
