संजय उवाच गतापराह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्नहनि भारत रथनागाश्वपत्तीनां सादिनां च महाक्षये

Sañjaya said: "O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the forenoon of that day had passed, and when there was a great destruction of chariots, elephants, infantry and horse-riders,

संजय ने कहा: "हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब उस दिन का पूर्वाह्न बीत गया था, और जब रथों, हाथियों, पैदल सेना और घुड़सवारों का महान विनाश हुआ था,

द्रोणपुत्रेण शल्येन कृपेण च महात्मना समसज्जत पाञ्चाल्यस्त्रिभिरेतैर्महारथैः

Pāñcāla fought with three mahāratha-s— Droṇa's son, Śalya and the great-souled Kṛpa.

पंचाल ने तीन महारथों- द्रोणपुत्र शल्य और महाबली कृप से युद्ध किया।

स लोकविदितानश्वान्निजघान महाबलः द्रौणेः पाञ्चालदायादः शितैर्दशभिराशुगैः

With ten sharp and swift arrows, Pāñcāla's immensely strong heir killed the horses of Droṇa's son, which were renowned in the world.

पंचाल के अत्यंत बलशाली उत्तराधिकारी ने दस तीखे और वेगशाली बाणों से द्रोणपुत्र के घोड़ों को मार डाला, जो संसार में प्रसिद्ध थे।

ततः शल्यरथं तूर्णमास्थाय हतवाहनः द्रौणिः पाञ्चालदायादमभ्यवर्षदथेषुभिः

Deprived of his mounts, Droṇa's son swiftly ascended Śalya's chariot and showered arrows on Pāñcāla's heir.

अपनी सवारी से वंचित, द्रोण का पुत्र तेजी से शल्य के रथ पर चढ़ गया और पंचाल के उत्तराधिकारी पर तीरों की वर्षा की।

धृष्टद्युम्नं तु संसक्तं द्रौणिना दृश्य भारत सौभद्रोऽभ्यपतत्तूर्णं विकिरन्निशिताञ्शरान्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing that Dhṛṣṭadyumna was engaged in a duel with Droṇa's son, Subhadrā's son quickly attacked, showering sharp arrows.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर कि धृष्टद्युम्न द्रोण के पुत्र के साथ द्वंद्व में लगा हुआ था, सुभद्रा के पुत्र ने तेजी से तीखे बाणों की वर्षा करते हुए हमला किया।

स शल्यं पञ्चविंशत्या कृपं च नवभिः शरैः अश्वत्थामानमष्टाभिर्विव्याध पुरुषर्षभ

O bull among men! He pierced Śalya with twenty-five arrows, Kṛpa with nine and Aśvatthāma with eight.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! उन्होंने शल्य को पच्चीस बाणों से, कृप को नौ और अश्वत्थामा को आठ बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

आर्जुनिं तु ततस्तूर्णं द्रौणिर्विव्याध पत्रिणा शल्यो द्वादशभिश्चैव कृपश्च निशितैस्त्रिभिः

However, Droṇa's son also quickly pierced Arjuna's son with shafted arrows. Śalya pierced him with twelve and Kṛpa with three sharp arrows.

हालाँकि, द्रोण के पुत्र ने भी तेजी से अर्जुन के पुत्र को बाणों से घायल कर दिया। शल्य ने बारह और कृपाण ने तीन तीखे बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

लक्ष्मणस्तव पौत्रस्तु तव पौत्रमवस्थितम् अभ्यवर्तत संहृष्टस्ततो युद्धमवर्तत

On seeing that your grandson was thus engaged in battle, your grandson Lakṣmaṇa rushed at him in great anger and there was an encounter between the two.

यह देखकर कि आपका पोता इस प्रकार युद्ध में लगा हुआ है, आपके पोते लक्ष्मण बड़े क्रोध से उस पर झपट पड़े और दोनों के बीच मुठभेड़ हो गई।

दौर्योधनिस्तु संक्रुद्धः सौभद्रं नवभिः शरैः विव्याध समरे राजंस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्

O king! In that battle, Duryodhana's son angrily pierced Subhadrā's son with nine arrows and it was an extraordinary sight.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में दुर्योधन के पुत्र ने क्रोधपूर्वक सुभद्रा के पुत्र को नौ बाणों से घायल कर दिया और यह एक असाधारण दृश्य था।

अभिमन्युस्तु संक्रुद्धो भ्रातरं भरतर्षभ शरैः पञ्चाशता राजन्क्षिप्रहस्तोऽभ्यविध्यत

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! O king! Abhimanyu was filled with ire and with dextrous hands, pierced his brother with five hundred arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! हे राजा! अभिमन्यु क्रोध से भर गया और उसने कुशल हाथों से अपने भाई को पाँच सौ बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

लक्ष्मणोऽपि ततस्तस्य धनुश्चिच्छेद पत्रिणा मुष्टिदेशे महाराज तत उच्चुक्रुशुर्जनाः

At this, Lakṣmaṇa used shafted arrows to slice down his bow at the handle. O great king! On seeing this, the people raised a loud shout.

इस पर, लक्ष्मण ने अपने धनुष को काटने के लिए बाणों का प्रयोग किया। हे महान राजा! यह देख लोगों ने जोर से चिल्लाना शुरू कर दिया।

तद्विहाय धनुश्छिन्नं सौभद्रः परवीरहा अन्यदादत्तवांश्चित्रं कार्मुकं वेगवत्तरम्

Then Subhadrā's son, the destroyer of enemies, discarded that shattered bow and picked up another bow that was more beautiful and stronger.

तब शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले सुभद्रा के पुत्र ने उस टूटे हुए धनुष को त्याग दिया और दूसरा धनुष उठाया जो अधिक सुंदर और मजबूत था।

तौ तत्र समरे हृष्टौ कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणौ अन्योन्यं विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैर्जघ्नतुः पुरुषर्षभौ

Those two bulls among men happily fought against each other, countering each other's efforts and piercing each other with sharp and shafted arrows.

वे दोनों नर बैल खुशी-खुशी एक-दूसरे से लड़ने लगे, एक-दूसरे के प्रयासों का प्रतिकार करते हुए एक-दूसरे को तीखे और तीखे बाणों से छेदने लगे।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं महारथम् पीडितं तव पौत्रेण प्रायात्तत्र जनेश्वरः

On seeing that his mahāratha son was thus assailed by your grandson, King Duryodhana, lord of men, rushed towards the spot.

यह देखकर कि आपके महारथी पुत्र पर आपके पोते ने इस प्रकार हमला किया है, नरश्रेष्ठ राजा दुर्योधन घटनास्थल की ओर दौड़े।

संनिवृत्ते तव सुते सर्व एव जनाधिपाः आर्जुनिं रथवंशेन समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्

When your son advanced, all the kings used masses of chariots to surround Arjuna's son from every direction.

जब आपका पुत्र आगे बढ़ा, तो सभी राजाओं ने अर्जुन के पुत्र को हर दिशा से घेरने के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर रथों का इस्तेमाल किया।

स तैः परिवृतः शूरैः शूरो युधि सुदुर्जयैः न स्म विव्यथते राजन्कृष्णतुल्यपराक्रमः

O king! But he was a brave and invincible warrior, equal in valour to Kṛṣṇā. Despite being surrounded by those heroes, he was not distressed.

हे राजा! लेकिन वह एक बहादुर और अजेय योद्धा था, जो वीरता में कृष्ण के बराबर था। उन वीरों से घिरे रहने पर भी उन्हें कोई कष्ट नहीं हुआ।

सौभद्रमथ संसक्तं तत्र दृष्ट्वा धनंजयः अभिदुद्राव संक्रुद्धस्त्रातुकामः स्वमात्मजम्

On seeing that Subhadrā's son was fighting there, Dhanañjayā swiftly advanced there, intending to save his son.

यह देखकर कि सुभद्रा का पुत्र वहां लड़ रहा था, धनंजय अपने पुत्र को बचाने के इरादे से तेजी से वहां पहुंचे।

ततः सरथनागाश्वा भीष्मद्रोणपुरोगमाः अभ्यवर्तन्त राजानः सहिताः सव्यसाचिनम्

With chariots, elephants and horses and with Bhīṣma and Droṇa at the forefront, all the kings forcefully attacked Savyasachi.

रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों तथा भीष्म और द्रोण को सबसे आगे लेकर सभी राजाओं ने बलपूर्वक सव्यसाची पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

उद्धूतं सहसा भौमं नागाश्वरथसादिभिः दिवाकरपथं प्राप्य रजस्तीव्रमदृश्यत

A thick dust suddenly arose from the ground, raised by the elephants, horses, chariots and infantry and it seemed to obstruct the path of the sun.

हाथियों, घोड़ों, रथों और पैदल सेना द्वारा अचानक जमीन से मोटी धूल उठी और वह सूर्य के मार्ग को अवरुद्ध करती हुई प्रतीत हुई।

तानि नागसहस्राणि भूमिपालशतानि च तस्य बाणपथं प्राप्य नाभ्यवर्तन्त सर्वशः

When those thousands of elephants and hundreds of kings approached within striking distance of his arrows, none of them could advance any further.

जब वे हजारों हाथी और सैकड़ों राजा उसके बाणों की मारक दूरी के भीतर आ गए, तो उनमें से कोई भी आगे नहीं बढ़ सका।

प्रणेदुः सर्वभूतानि बभूवुस्तिमिरा दिशः कुरूणामनयस्तीव्रः समदृश्यत दारुणः

All the beings lamented loudly and all the directions were covered in darkness. The army of the Kuru-s seemed to be terrible and dreadful.

सभी प्राणियों ने बड़े ज़ोर से विलाप किया और सभी दिशाएँ अंधकार में डूब गईं। कौरवों की सेना भयानक एवं भयानक प्रतीत हो रही थी।

नाप्यन्तरिक्षं न दिशो न भूमिर्न च भास्करः प्रजज्ञे भरतश्रेष्ठ शरसंघैः किरीटिनः

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! Because of the numerous arrows shot by Kirīṭī, the sky, the directions, the earth or the sun could not be seen

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! किरीटी द्वारा चलाये गये असंख्य बाणों के कारण आकाश, दिशाएँ, पृथ्वी अथवा सूर्य दिखाई नहीं दे रहे थे।

सादितध्वजनागास्तु हताश्वा रथिनो भृशम् विप्रद्रुतरथाः केचिद्दृश्यन्ते रथयूथपाः

Elephants were deprived of the standards on their backs. Many charioteers were deprived of their horses.

हाथियों को उनकी पीठ पर लगे मानकों से वंचित कर दिया गया। कई सारथी अपने घोड़ों से वंचित हो गए।

विरथा रथिनश्चान्ये धावमानाः समन्ततः तत्र तत्रैव दृश्यन्ते सायुधाः साङ्गदैर्भुजैः

Having been deprived of their chariots, many charioteers were seen to be wandering around there.

बहुत से रथी अपने रथों से वंचित होकर वहीं इधर-उधर भटकते नजर आये।

हयारोहा हयांस्त्यक्त्वा गजारोहाश्च दन्तिनः अर्जुनस्य भयाद्राजन्समन्ताद्विप्रदुद्रुवुः

Other charioteers discarded their chariots and were seen to flee. They were seen there, weapons in their hands and with bracelets on their upper arms.

अन्य रथियों ने अपने रथ छोड़ दिये और भागते देखे गये। उन्हें वहां देखा गया, उनके हाथों में हथियार थे और उनकी ऊपरी बांहों पर कंगन थे।

रथेभ्यश्च गजेभ्यश्च हयेभ्यश्च नराधिपाः पतिताः पात्यमानाश्च दृश्यन्तेऽर्जुनताडिताः

O king! Because of their fear of Arjuna, horse-riders gave up their horses and elephant-riders their elephants. They fled in all the directions.

हे राजा! अर्जुन के डर से घुड़सवारों ने अपने घोड़े और हाथी सवारों ने अपने हाथी छोड़ दिये। वे सभी दिशाओं में भाग गये।

सगदानुद्यतान्बाहून्सखड्गांश्च विशां पते सप्रासांश्च सतूणीरान्सशरान्सशरासनान्

The kings were seen to fall down from their chariots, elephants and horses. They were seen to fall down, oppressed by Arjuna.

राजाओं को अपने रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों से गिरते देखा गया। उन्हें अर्जुन द्वारा प्रताड़ित होकर गिरते हुए देखा गया।

साङ्कुशान्सपताकांश्च तत्र तत्रार्जुनो नृणाम् निचकर्त शरैरुग्रै रौद्रं बिभ्रद्वपुस्तदा

O lord of the earth! Assuming a terrible form there, Arjuna used his terrible arrows to cut down the upraised arms of men

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वहाँ भयंकर रूप धारण करके अर्जुन ने अपने भयानक बाणों से मनुष्यों की ऊपर उठी हुई भुजाओं को काट डाला

परिघाणां प्रवृद्धानां मुद्गराणां च मारिष प्रासानां भिण्डिपालानां निस्त्रिंशानां च संयुगे

who held clubs, swords, lances, quivers, bows, arrows, goads and standards.

जिनके पास लाठियाँ, तलवारें, भाले, तरकश, धनुष, बाण, अंकुश और ध्वज थे।

परश्वधानां तीक्ष्णानां तोमराणां च भारत वर्मणां चापविद्धानां कवचानां च भूतले

O venerable one! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Heavy maces and clubs, lances, catapults, swords, sharp battleaxes, javelins, shields and armour were shattered in that battle and fell down on the ground.

हे आदरणीय! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस युद्ध में भारी गदाएँ और लाठियाँ, भाले, गुलेल, तलवारें, तेज़ फरसे, भाले, ढालें ​​और कवच टूटकर ज़मीन पर गिर पड़े।

ध्वजानां चर्मणां चैव व्यजनानां च सर्वशः छत्राणां हेमदण्डानां चामराणां च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Flags, shields, many kinds of whisks, umbrellas, golden rods and tassels were strewn around.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! चारों ओर झंडे, ढालें, अनेक प्रकार के छत्र, सुनहरी छड़ें और लटकन बिखरे हुए थे।

प्रतोदानां कशानां च योक्त्राणां चैव मारिष राशयश्चात्र दृश्यन्ते विनिकीर्णा रणक्षितौ

O venerable one! There were whips, halters, thongs and reins. They were seen to be scattered on the field of battle.

हे आदरणीय! वहाँ चाबुक, लगाम, पेटी और लगाम थे। वे युद्ध के मैदान में बिखरे हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे।

नासीत्तत्र पुमान्कश्चित्तव सैन्यस्य भारत योऽर्जुनं समरे शूरं प्रत्युद्यायात्कथंचन

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There was not a single man in your army who could advance against the brave Arjuna in battle.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपकी सेना में एक भी ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं था जो युद्ध में वीर अर्जुन के सामने आगे बढ़ सके।

यो यो हि समरे पार्थं प्रत्युद्याति विशां पते स स वै विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैः परलोकाय नीयते

O lord of the earth! In that encounter, whoever advanced against Pārtha was pierced by sharp and shafted arrows and conveyed to the world of the dead.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उस मुठभेड़ में, जो कोई भी पार्थ के खिलाफ आगे बढ़ा, उसे तीखे और तीरों से छेद दिया गया और मृतकों की दुनिया में पहुंचा दिया गया।

तेषु विद्रवमाणेषु तव योधेषु सर्वशः अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च दध्मतुर्वारिजोत्तमौ

When all the warriors on your side were scattered, Arjuna and Vāsudeva blew on their supreme conch shells.

जब आपके पक्ष के सभी योद्धा तितर-बितर हो गये, तब अर्जुन और वासुदेव ने अपना श्रेष्ठ शंख बजाया।

तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा पिता देवव्रतस्तव अब्रवीत्समरे शूरं भारद्वाजं स्मयन्निव

On seeing that the army had been shattered in that battle, your father, Devavrata, smiled and told Bhāradvāja's brave son,

यह देखकर कि उस युद्ध में सेना बिखर गयी थी, आपके पिता देवव्रत मुस्कुराये और भारद्वाज के बहादुर पुत्र से कहा,

एष पाण्डुसुतो वीरः कृष्णेन सहितो बली तथा करोति सैन्यानि यथा कुर्याद्धनंजयः

"This brave and powerful son of Pāṇḍu is united with Kṛṣṇā. He is dealing with our soldiers only as Dhanañjayā can.

"पांडु का यह बहादुर और शक्तिशाली पुत्र कृष्ण के साथ एकजुट है। वह हमारे सैनिकों के साथ केवल धनंजय के रूप में व्यवहार कर रहा है।

न ह्येष समरे शक्यो जेतुमद्य कथंचन यथास्य दृश्यते रूपं कालान्तकयमोपमम्

No one is capable of vanquishing him in battle today. His form seems to be like that of the destroyer at the end of an erā.

आज उसे युद्ध में कोई भी पराजित करने में समर्थ नहीं है। उनका स्वरूप एक युग के अंत में विध्वंसक के समान प्रतीत होता है।

न निवर्तयितुं चापि शक्येयं महती चमूः अन्योन्यप्रेक्षया पश्य द्रवतीयं वरूथिनी

It is impossible to rally our great army now. Behold. They are looking at each other and are running away.

अब हमारी महान सेना को एकत्र करना असंभव है। देखो. वो एक दूसरे को देख रहे हैं और भाग रहे हैं.

एष चास्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठं भानुमान्प्रतिपद्यते वपूंषि सर्वलोकस्य संहरन्निव सर्वथा

The sun can be seen aloft the supreme mountain Asta. It is as if it has robbed the sight of the entire world.

सूर्य को सर्वोच्च पर्वत अस्त के ऊपर देखा जा सकता है। ऐसा लगता है मानो इसने पूरी दुनिया की नज़र ही छीन ली हो।

तत्रावहारं संप्राप्तं मन्येऽहं पुरुषर्षभ श्रान्ता भीताश्च नो योधा न योत्स्यन्ति कथंचन

O bull among men! I think the time has come for retreat. The warriors are exhausted and frightened and will never fight."

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! मुझे लगता है कि पीछे हटने का समय आ गया है. योद्धा थके हुए और भयभीत हैं और कभी नहीं लड़ेंगे।"

एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्मो द्रोणमाचार्यसत्तमम् अवहारमथो चक्रे तावकानां महारथः

Having spoken thus to the supreme preceptor Droṇa, mahāratha Bhīṣma arranged that your army should be withdrawn.

परम गुरु द्रोण से इस प्रकार कहकर महारथ भीष्म ने यह व्यवस्था की कि आपकी सेना को हटा लिया जाये।

ततोऽवहारः सैन्यानां तव तेषां च भारत अस्तं गच्छति सूर्येऽभूत्संध्याकाले च वर्तति

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Your soldiers, and those of the others, were withdrawn. The sun set and evening set in.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके और अन्य सैनिकों को हटा लिया गया। सूरज डूब गया और शाम ढल गई।
