संजय उवाच व्युषितायां च शर्वर्यामुदिते च दिवाकरे उभे सेने महाराज युद्धायैव समीयतुः

Sañjaya said: "O great king! When the night had passed and the sun had arisen, both the armies assembled to fight again.

संजय ने कहा: "हे महान राजा! जब रात बीत गई और सूर्य उदय हुआ, तो दोनों सेनाएं फिर से लड़ने के लिए इकट्ठी हुईं।

अभ्यधावंश्च संक्रुद्धाः परस्परजिगीषवः ते सर्वे सहिता युद्धे समालोक्य परस्परम्

In great rage, wishing to kill each other, they advanced against each other. All of them glanced at each other and assembled for the encounter.

बड़े क्रोध में, एक-दूसरे को मारने की इच्छा से, वे एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े। उन सभी ने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा और मुठभेड़ के लिए इकट्ठे हो गए।

पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश्च राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव व्यूहौ च व्यूह्य संरब्धाः संप्रयुद्धाः प्रहारिणः

O king! Because of your evil counsel, the Pāṇḍava-s and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra arrayed themselves in vyūha-s and counter-vyūha-s. They armed and arrayed themselves and attacked each other.

हे राजा! आपकी दुष्ट सलाह के कारण, पांडवों और धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों ने स्वयं को व्यूह और प्रति-व्यूह में व्यवस्थित किया। उन्होंने हथियारबंद होकर स्वयं को संगठित किया और एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया।

अरक्षन्मकरव्यूहं भीष्मो राजन्समन्ततः तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्नरक्षन्व्यूहमात्मनः

O king! Bhīṣma protected himself in every direction in the form of a makara vyūha. O king! The Pāṇḍava-s also protected themselves in the form of a vyūha.

हे राजा! भीष्म ने मकर व्यूह के रूप में हर दिशा में अपनी रक्षा की। हे राजा! पांडवों ने भी व्यूह के रूप में अपनी रक्षा की।

स निर्ययौ रथानीकं पिता देवव्रतस्तव महता रथवंशेन संवृतो रथिनां वरः

Your father, Devavrata, advanced with a great army of chariots. He was surrounded by supreme charioteers and other chariots,

आपके पिता देवव्रत रथों की विशाल सेना के साथ आगे बढ़े। वह श्रेष्ठ रथियों तथा अन्य रथियों से घिरा हुआ था,

इतरेतरमन्वीयुर्यथाभागमवस्थिताः रथिनः पत्तयश्चैव दन्तिनः सादिनस्तथा

infantry, elephants and horse-riders, all stationed in accordance with their appropriate ranks.

पैदल सेना, हाथी और घुड़सवार, सभी अपने उचित रैंक के अनुसार तैनात थे।

तान्दृष्ट्वा प्रोद्यतान्संख्ये पाण्डवाश्च यशस्विनः श्येनेन व्यूहराजेन तेनाजय्येन संयुगे

The illustrious Pāṇḍava-s saw that they were ready for battle. They arranged themselves for battle in the form of a śyena, the invincible vyūha that is the king of all vyūhas.

महाबली पाण्डवों ने देखा कि वे युद्ध के लिये तैयार हैं। उन्होंने स्वयं को श्येन, अजेय व्यूह, जो सभी व्यूहों का राजा है, के रूप में युद्ध के लिए व्यवस्थित किया।

अशोभत मुखे तस्य भीमसेनो महाबलः नेत्रे शिखण्डी दुर्धर्षो धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः

The immensely strong Bhīmasena was radiant at the mouth. The invincible Śikhaṇḍī and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna were the eyes.

अत्यंत बलवान भीमसेन के मुख पर तेज व्याप्त था। अजेय शिखंडी और पार्श्वत धृष्टद्युम्न नेत्र थे।

शीर्षं तस्याभवद्वीरः सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः विधुन्वन्गाण्डिवं पार्थो ग्रीवायामभवत्तदा

The brave Sātyaki, with truth as his valour, was the head. Wielding the Gāṇḍīva bow, Pārtha was stationed at the neck.

वीर सात्यकि, सत्य को अपनी वीरता के समान प्रधान रखते थे। गाण्डीव धनुष धारण किये पार्थ गर्दन पर तैनात थे।

अक्षौहिण्या समग्रा या वामपक्षोऽभवत्तदा महात्मा द्रुपदः श्रीमान्सह पुत्रेण संयुगे

With an entire akṣauhiṇī, the illustrious and great-souled Drupada, together with his sons, stationed himself for battle on the left wing.

संपूर्ण अक्षौहिणी के साथ, तेजस्वी और महान आत्मा वाले द्रुपद, अपने पुत्रों के साथ, वाम विंग पर युद्ध के लिए तैनात हुए।

दक्षिणश्चाभवत्पक्षः कैकेयोऽक्षौहिणीपतिः पृष्ठतो द्रौपदेयाश्च सौभद्रश्चापि वीर्यवान्

Kekaya, the leader of an akṣauhiṇī, was stationed on the right wing. Draupadī's sons and Subhadrā's valiant son formed the back.

एक अक्षौहिणी के नेता केकय, दक्षिणपंथी पर तैनात थे। द्रौपदी के पुत्र और सुभद्रा के वीर पुत्र पीछे थे।

पृष्ठे समभवच्छ्रीमान्स्वयं राजा युधिष्ठिरः भ्रातृभ्यां सहितो धीमान्यमाभ्यां चारुविक्रमः

The illustrious King Yudhiṣṭhira, handsome in his prowess, was himself at the rear, with his two intelligent brothers.

अपने दो बुद्धिमान भाइयों के साथ, महाबली राजा युधिष्ठिर स्वयं सबसे पीछे थे।

प्रविश्य तु रणे भीमो मकरं मुखतस्तदा भीष्ममासाद्य संग्रामे छादयामास सायकैः

The battle commenced with Bhīmā penetrating the makara's mouth. He advanced against Bhīṣma in that encounter and enveloped him with arrows.

युद्ध की शुरुआत भीम द्वारा मकर के मुख में प्रवेश करने से हुई। उस मुठभेड़ में वह भीष्म के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े और उन्हें बाणों से घेर लिया।

ततो भीष्मो महास्त्राणि पातयामास भारत मोहयन्पाण्डुपुत्राणां व्यूढं सैन्यं महाहवे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Using great weapons, Bhīṣma brought these down. In that great battle, he confounded the soldiers of the sons of Pāṇḍu, who were stationed in arrays.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! भीष्म ने महान अस्त्रों का प्रयोग करके इन्हें गिरा दिया। उस महान युद्ध में, उन्होंने पाण्डु के पुत्रों के सैनिकों को भ्रमित कर दिया, जो व्यूह रचना में तैनात थे।

संमुह्यति तदा सैन्ये त्वरमाणो धनंजयः भीष्मं शरसहस्रेण विव्याध रणमूर्धनि

On seeing that the soldiers were confounded, Dhanañjayā swiftly advanced. In the forefront of that battle, he pierced Bhīṣma with one thousand arrows.

यह देखकर कि सैनिक भ्रमित हो गए, धनंजय तेजी से आगे बढ़े। उस युद्ध में सबसे आगे उसने भीष्म को एक हजार बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

परिसंवार्य चास्त्राणि भीष्ममुक्तानि संयुगे स्वेनानीकेन हृष्टेन युद्धाय समवस्थितः

Having repulsed the weapons that had been released by Bhīṣma in that encounter, he delighted his own soldiers, who were stationed in battle.

उस मुठभेड़ में भीष्म द्वारा छोड़े गए हथियारों को खदेड़ने के बाद, उन्होंने युद्ध में तैनात अपने सैनिकों को प्रसन्न किया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भारद्वाजमभाषत पूर्वं दृष्ट्वा वधं घोरं बलस्य बलिनां वरः भ्रातॄणां च वधं युद्धे स्मरमाणो महारथः

At this, King Duryodhana spoke to Bhāradvāja's son. The supreme among strong ones had earlier witnessed the terrible slaughter of his soldiers and the death of his brothers in the battle. Remembering this, the mahāratha said,

इस पर राजा दुर्योधन ने भारद्वाज पुत्र से बात की। बलवानों में सर्वोच्च ने पहले ही युद्ध में अपने सैनिकों का भयानक वध और अपने भाइयों की मृत्यु देखी थी। यह याद करके महारथ ने कहा,

आचार्य सततं त्वं हि हितकामो ममानघ वयं हि त्वां समाश्रित्य भीष्मं चैव पितामहम्

"O preceptor! O unblemished one! You have always had my welfare in heart. We have sought refuge with you and with Bhīṣma, the grandfather.

"हे गुरु! हे निष्कलंक! आपने सदैव मेरे कल्याण का ध्यान रखा है। हमने आपकी और पितामह भीष्म की शरण ली है।

देवानपि रणे जेतुं प्रार्थयामो न संशयः किमु पाण्डुसुतान्युद्धे हीनवीर्यपराक्रमान्

With this, there is no doubt that we can hope to vanquish even the gods in battle, not to speak of the sons of Pāṇḍu, who are inferior in valour and power in this encounter."

इससे, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि हम युद्ध में देवताओं को भी परास्त करने की आशा कर सकते हैं, पांडु के पुत्रों की तो बात ही छोड़ दें, जो इस मुकाबले में वीरता और शक्ति में हीन हैं।"

एवमुक्तस्ततो द्रोणस्तव पुत्रेण मारिष अभिनत्पाण्डवानीकं प्रेक्षमाणस्य सात्यकेः

O venerable one! Having been thus addressed by your son, while Sātyaki looked on, Droṇa penetrated the Pāṇḍava ranks.

हे आदरणीय! आपके पुत्र द्वारा इस प्रकार सम्बोधित किये जाने पर सात्यकि देखते रह गये, द्रोण ने पाण्डव सेना में प्रवेश कर लिया।

सात्यकिस्तु तदा द्रोणं वारयामास भारत ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Sātyaki countered Droṇa's progress and a tumultuous battle commenced. It made the body hair stand up.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सात्यकि ने द्रोण की प्रगति का प्रतिकार किया और घमासान युद्ध प्रारम्भ हो गया। इससे शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।

शैनेयं तु रणे क्रुद्धो भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् अविध्यन्निशितैर्बाणैर्जत्रुदेशे हसन्निव

Bhāradvāja's powerful son was enraged. In that encounter, as if smiling, he pierced Śini's descendant on his shoulders with ten sharp arrows.

भारद्वाज का शक्तिशाली पुत्र क्रोधित हो गया। उस मुठभेड़ में, मानो मुस्कुराते हुए, उसने शिनि के वंशज के कंधों को दस तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

भीमसेनस्ततः क्रुद्धो भारद्वाजमविध्यत संरक्षन्सात्यकिं राजन्द्रोणाच्छस्त्रभृतां वरात्

O king! At this, extremely enraged, Bhīmasena wished to protect Sātyaki from Droṇa, supreme among the wielders of weapons, and pierced him.

हे राजा! इस पर अत्यधिक क्रोधित होकर भीमसेन ने शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण से सात्यकि की रक्षा करने की कामना की और उन्हें बींध डाला।

ततो द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च तथा शल्यश्च मारिष भीमसेनं रणे क्रुद्धाश्छादयां चक्रिरे शरैः

O venerable one! In that battle, Droṇa, Bhīṣma and Śalya angrily enveloped Bhīmasena with arrows.

हे आदरणीय! उस युद्ध में द्रोण, भीष्म और शल्य ने क्रोधपूर्वक बाणों से भीमसेन को घेर लिया।

तत्राभिमन्युः संक्रुद्धो द्रौपदेयाश्च मारिष विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणैः सर्वांस्तानुद्यतायुधान्

O venerable one! Abhimanyu became angry, and so did Draupadī's sons. They used sharp arrows to wound all the warriors with upraised weapons.

हे आदरणीय! अभिमन्यु क्रोधित हो गये और द्रौपदी के पुत्र भी क्रोधित हो गये। उन्होंने हथियार उठाये हुए सभी योद्धाओं को घायल करने के लिए तीखे बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

भीष्मद्रोणौ च संक्रुद्धावापतन्तौ महाबलौ प्रत्युद्ययौ शिखण्डी तु महेष्वासो महाहवे

In the great battle, the great archer, Śikhaṇḍī, angrily advanced against the immensely strong Bhīṣma and Droṇa, who were causing this torment.

महान युद्ध में, महान धनुर्धर, शिखंडी, बेहद शक्तिशाली भीष्म और द्रोण के खिलाफ गुस्से में आगे बढ़े, जो इस पीड़ा का कारण बन रहे थे।

प्रगृह्य बलवद्वीरो धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम् अभ्यवर्षच्छरैस्तूर्णं छादयानो दिवाकरम्

The brave and powerful one grasped a bow that had the sound of a cloud. Śikhaṇḍī swiftly showered arrows that shrouded the sun.

उस वीर और शक्तिशाली ने एक ऐसा धनुष पकड़ लिया जिसकी ध्वनि मेघ के समान थी। शिखंडी ने तेजी से बाणों की वर्षा की जिससे सूर्य ढक गया।

शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य भरतानां पितामहः अवर्जयत संग्रामे स्त्रीत्वं तस्यानुसंस्मरन्

However, on confronting him, the grandfather of the Bhārata lineage remembered that he had been a woman earlier and withdrew from the battle.

हालाँकि, उनका सामना करने पर, भरत वंश के पितामह को याद आया कि वह पहले एक महिला थे और युद्ध से हट गए।

ततो द्रोणो महाराज अभ्यद्रवत तं रणे रक्षमाणस्ततो भीष्मं तव पुत्रेण चोदितः

O great king! At this, instructed by your son and with a desire to protect Bhīṣma, Droṇa rushed to battle.

हे महान राजा! इस पर आपके पुत्र के निर्देशानुसार तथा भीष्म की रक्षा की इच्छा से द्रोण युद्ध के लिये दौड़ पड़े।

शिखण्डी तु समासाद्य द्रोणं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् अवर्जयत संग्रामे युगान्ताग्निमिवोल्बणम्

Śikhaṇḍī confronted Droṇa, supreme among the wielders of weapons, and fled from the field of battle, as if from the fire that burns at the destruction of an erā.

शिखंडी ने शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण का सामना किया और युद्ध के मैदान से भाग गया, मानो एक युग के विनाश पर जलने वाली आग से।

ततो बलेन महता पुत्रस्तव विशां पते जुगोप भीष्ममासाद्य प्रार्थयानो महद्यशः

O lord of the earth! With a large army, your son advanced to protect Bhīṣma and desiring a great victory.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपका पुत्र एक बड़ी सेना के साथ भीष्म की रक्षा के लिए और महान विजय की इच्छा से आगे बढ़ा।

तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्पुरस्कृत्य धनंजयम् भीष्ममेवाभ्यवर्तन्त जये कृत्वा दृढां मतिम्

O king! But with Dhanañjayā at the forefront, the Pāṇḍava-s advanced against Bhīṣma, firm in their resolution of ensuring victory.

हे राजा! लेकिन धनंजय को सबसे आगे रखते हुए, पांडव भीष्म के खिलाफ आगे बढ़े, जीत सुनिश्चित करने के अपने संकल्प पर दृढ़ थे।

तद्युद्धमभवद्घोरं देवानां दानवैरिव जयं च काङ्क्षतां नित्यं यशश्च परमाद्भुतम्

A terrible and extremely wonderful battle ensued, like that between the gods and the dānava-s. Each side desired victory and eternal fame.

देवताओं और दानवों के बीच जैसा भयानक और अत्यंत अद्भुत युद्ध छिड़ गया। प्रत्येक पक्ष विजय और शाश्वत प्रसिद्धि चाहता था।
