संजय उवाच अर्जुनस्तु रणे शल्यं यतमानं महारथम् छादयामास समरे शरैः संनतपर्वभिः

Sañjaya said: In the battle, mahāratha Arjuna exerted himself against Śalya. In the encounter, he shrouded him with straight-tufted arrows.

संजय ने कहा: युद्ध में, महारथी अर्जुन ने शल्य के विरुद्ध अपना ज़ोर लगाया। मुठभेड़ में उसने उसे सीधे-सीधे तीरों से घेर लिया।

सुशर्माणं कृपं चैव त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरविध्यत प्राग्ज्योतिषं च समरे सैन्धवं च जयद्रथम्

He pierced Susharma and Kṛpa with three arrows each. O Indra among kings! In the battle, he wounded Prāgjyotiṣa, Saindhava Jayadratha,

उन्होंने सुशर्मा और कृप को तीन-तीन बाणों से घायल कर दिया। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! युद्ध में उसने प्राग्ज्योतिष, सैंधव जयद्रथ, को घायल कर दिया।

चित्रसेनं विकर्णं च कृतवर्माणमेव च दुर्मर्षणं च राजेन्द्र आवन्त्यौ च महारथौ

Citrasenā, Vikarṇa, Kritavarma, Durmarṣaṇa and the two mahāratha-s from Avanti with three arrows each.

चित्रसेना, विकर्ण, कृतवर्मा, दुर्मर्षण और अवंती के दो महारथी प्रत्येक के पास तीन बाण थे।

एकैकं त्रिभिरानर्छत्कङ्कबर्हिणवाजितैः शरैरतिरथो युद्धे पीडयन्वाहिनीं तव

These were swift and were tufted with the feathers of herons and peacocks. In the battle, the atiratha oppressed your army with arrows.

ये तेज़ थे और इनमें बगुलों और मोर के पंख लगे हुए थे। युद्ध में अतिरथ ने बाणों से आपकी सेना पर अत्याचार किया।

जयद्रथो रणे पार्थं भित्त्वा भारत सायकैः भीमं विव्याध तरसा चित्रसेनरथे स्थितः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In the encounter, Jayadratha pierced Pārtha with arrows and while stationed on Citrasenā's chariot, swiftly pierced Bhīmā.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मुठभेड़ में जयद्रथ ने पार्थ को बाणों से घायल कर दिया और चित्रसेना के रथ पर बैठे हुए भीम को तेजी से घायल कर दिया।

शल्यश्च समरे जिष्णुं कृपश्च रथिनां वरः विव्यधाते महाबाहुं बहुधा मर्मभेदिभिः

In the battle, Śalya and Kṛpa pierced the mighty-armed Jiṣṇu, supreme among rāṭha-s, with many arrows that struck at the inner organs.

युद्ध में शल्य और कृप ने रथों में श्रेष्ठ महाबाहु जिष्णु को कई बाणों से घायल कर दिया, जो आंतरिक अंगों पर लगे।

चित्रसेनादयश्चैव पुत्रास्तव विशां पते पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिस्तूर्णं संयुगे निशितैः शरैः आजघ्नुरर्जुनं संख्ये भीमसेनं च मारिष

O lord of the earth! O venerable one! In the encounter, your sons, Citrasenā and the others, struck each of them, Arjuna and Bhīmasena, with five sharp arrows.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे आदरणीय! मुठभेड़ में आपके पुत्रों चित्रसेना तथा अन्य ने अर्जुन तथा भीमसेन दोनों को पाँच-पाँच तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तौ तत्र रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ कौन्तेयौ भरतर्षभौ अपीडयेतां समरे त्रिगर्तानां महद्बलम्

But those foremost of rāṭha-s, the Kaunteya-s, bulls among the Bhārata lineage, continued to oppress the large army of the Trigarta-s in the encounter.

लेकिन भरत वंश के सबसे प्रमुख रथ-कौन्तेय बैल, ने मुठभेड़ में त्रिगर्त-एस की बड़ी सेना पर अत्याचार करना जारी रखा।

सुशर्मापि रणे पार्थं विद्ध्वा बहुभिरायसैः ननाद बलवन्नादं नादयन्वै नभस्तलम्

In the battle, Susharma pierced Pārtha with many sharp arrows. The powerful one roared and the sound echoed in the sky.

युद्ध में सुशर्मा ने अनेक तीखे बाणों से पार्थ को घायल कर दिया। शक्तिशाली ने गर्जना की और ध्वनि आकाश में गूँज उठी।

अन्ये च रथिनः शूरा भीमसेनधनंजयौ विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणै रुक्मपुङ्खैरजिह्मगैः

Other brave rāṭha-s pierced Bhīmasena and Dhanañjayā with sharp and swift arrows that were tufted with gold.

अन्य वीर रथियों ने भीमसेन और धनञ्जय को सोने से जड़े हुए तीखे और वेगशाली बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तेषां तु रथिनां मध्ये कौन्तेयौ रथिनां वरौ क्रीडमानौ रथोदारौ चित्ररूपौ व्यरोचताम् आमिषेप्सू गवां मध्ये सिंहाविव बलोत्कटौ

In the midst of those rāṭha-s, the Kaunteya-s, supreme among rāṭha-s, looked beautiful as they seemed to be sporting and roamed around in their chariots. They were like powerful lions amidst a herd of cattle.

उन रथों के बीच में, रथों में सर्वोच्च, कौन्तेय, सुंदर लग रहे थे क्योंकि वे खेल रहे थे और अपने रथों में घूम रहे थे। वे मवेशियों के झुंड के बीच शक्तिशाली शेर की तरह थे।

छित्त्वा धनूंषि वीराणां शरांश्च बहुधा रणे पातयामासतुर्वीरौ शिरांसि शतशो नृणाम्

They shattered the bows and arrows of many brave ones in the battle. They brought down the heads of hundreds of brave kings.

उन्होंने युद्ध में अनेक वीरों के धनुष-बाण तोड़ दिये। उन्होंने सैकड़ों वीर राजाओं के सिर काट डाले।

रथाश्च बहवो भग्ना हयाश्च शतशो हताः गजाश्च सगजारोहाः पेतुरुर्व्यां महामृधे

They shattered many chariots and killed hundreds of horses.

उन्होंने कई रथों को तोड़ डाला और सैकड़ों घोड़ों को मार डाला।

रथिनः सादिनश्चैव तत्र तत्र निसूदिताः दृश्यन्ते बहुधा राजन्वेष्टमानाः समन्ततः

In the great battle, they brought down elephant-riders from their elephants. O king! Many charioteers and riders were seen to be devoid of their lives. O king! They were immobile in every direction.

महान् युद्ध में उन्होंने हाथी सवारों को हाथियों से नीचे गिरा दिया। हे राजा! बहुत से सारथियों और सवारों को प्राणों से विहीन देखा गया। हे राजा! वे हर दिशा में स्थिर थे.

हतैर्गजपदात्योघैर्वाजिभिश्च निसूदितैः रथैश्च बहुधा भग्नैः समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी

Elephants were slain. Foot soldiers and horses lost their lives. The earth was strewn with many shattered chariots.

हाथी मारे गये। पैदल सैनिकों और घोड़ों की जान चली गई। पृथ्वी अनेक टूटे-फूटे रथों से पट गई।

छत्रैश्च बहुधा छिन्नैर्ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः अङ्कुशैरपविद्धैश्च परिस्तोमैश्च भारत

Many umbrellas and standards were broken and were brought down. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were discarded goads and cushions,

कई छतरियां और मानक टूट गए और नीचे गिरा दिए गए। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वहाँ फेंके गए बकरे और गद्दियाँ थीं,

केयूरैरङ्गदैर्हारै राङ्कवैर्मृदितैस्तथा उष्णीषैरपविद्धैश्च चामरव्यजनैरपि

diadems, armlets, necklaces, hides of raṅku deer and discarded headdresses, whisks and fans.

मुकुट, बाजूबंद, हार, रंकु हिरण की खाल और छोड़े गए हेडड्रेस, मूंछें और पंखे।

तत्र तत्रापविद्धैश्च बाहुभिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः ऊरुभिश्च नरेन्द्राणां समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी

There were severed arms with sandalwood paste smeared on them. The earth was strewn with the thighs of Indra-s among men.

कटे हुए हथियार थे जिन पर चंदन का लेप लगा हुआ था। पृथ्वी मनुष्यों के बीच इंद्रों की जांघों से बिखरी हुई थी।

तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम रणे पार्थस्य विक्रमम् शरैः संवार्य तान्वीरान्निजघान बलं तव

We witnessed Pārtha's extraordinary valour in the battle. He used his arrows to restrain and strike all the warriors in your army.

हमने युद्ध में पार्थ की असाधारण वीरता देखी। उसने आपकी सेना के सभी योद्धाओं को रोकने और उन पर प्रहार करने के लिए अपने बाणों का उपयोग किया।

पुत्रस्तु तव तं दृष्ट्वा भीमार्जुनसमागमम् गाङ्गेयस्य रथाभ्याशमुपजग्मे महाभये

On seeing that Bhīmā and Arjuna were united, your son was frightened and quickly rushed towards Gāṅgeya's chariot, in great fear.

यह देखकर कि भीम और अर्जुन एक हो गये हैं, आपका पुत्र भयभीत हो गया और अत्यंत भयभीत होकर तेजी से गांगेय के रथ की ओर दौड़ा।

कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यावाजग्मुः संयुगं तदा

Kṛpa, Kritavarma, Saindhava Jayadratha and Vinda and Anuvinda from Avanti were the ones who did not give up the battle then.

कृप, कृतवर्मा, सैंधव जयद्रथ और अवंती के विन्द और अनुविन्द ऐसे थे जिन्होंने तब युद्ध नहीं छोड़ा।

ततो भीमो महेष्वासः फल्गुनश्च महारथः कौरवाणां चमूं घोरां भृशं दुद्रुवतू रणे

In the encounter, Bhīmā, the great archer, and mahāratha Phālguna crushed the army of the Kaurava-s in terrible fashion.

मुठभेड़ में, महान धनुर्धर भीम और महारथी फाल्गुन ने कौरवों की सेना को भयानक तरीके से कुचल दिया।

ततो बर्हिणवाजानामयुतान्यर्बुदानि च धनंजयरथे तूर्णं पातयन्ति स्म संयुगे

In the encounter, tens of thousands and millions of arrows were quickly showered down on Dhanañjayā's chariot.

मुठभेड़ में, धनंजय के रथ पर तेजी से हजारों और लाखों बाणों की वर्षा की गई।

ततस्ताञ्शरजालेन संनिवार्य महारथान् पार्थः समन्तात्समरे प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे

The mahāratha repulsed that net of arrows. In the encounter, Pārtha began to send them to the land of the dead.

महारथ ने बाणों के उस जाल को खदेड़ दिया। मुठभेड़ में, पार्थ ने उन्हें मृतकों की भूमि पर भेजना शुरू कर दिया।

शल्यस्तु समरे जिष्णुं क्रीडन्निव महारथः आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः

Mahāratha Śalya became enraged in that battle. As if playing, he struck Jiṣṇu in the chest with a straight-tufted and broad-headed arrow.

उस युद्ध में महारथी शल्य क्रोधित हो गये। जैसे कि खेल रहा हो, उसने सीधे-नुकीले और चौड़े सिर वाले तीर से जिशु की छाती पर वार किया।

तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः अथैनं सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भृशं विव्याध मर्मणि

Pārtha used five arrows to sever the bow from his hand. He then used other sharp arrows to severely wound him in his inner organs.

पार्थ ने उसके हाथ से धनुष को तोड़ने के लिए पाँच बाणों का प्रयोग किया। फिर उसने अन्य तीखे बाणों से उसके आंतरिक अंगों को गंभीर रूप से घायल कर दिया।

अथान्यद्धनुरादाय समरे भारसाधनम् मद्रेश्वरो रणे जिष्णुं ताडयामास रोषितः

In the battle, the lord of Madra grasped another bow that was capable of bearing a heavy burden. O great king! He angrily wounded Jiṣṇu

युद्ध में मद्र के स्वामी ने एक और धनुष उठाया जो भारी बोझ उठाने में सक्षम था। हे महान राजा! उसने गुस्से में जिशु को घायल कर दिया

त्रिभिः शरैर्महाराज वासुदेवं च पञ्चभिः भीमसेनं च नवभिर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्

with three arrows and Vāsudeva with five. He struck Bhīmasena in the chest and the arms with nine.

तीन बाणों से और वासुदेव पाँच बाणों से। उसने भीमसेन की छाती और भुजाओं पर नौ प्रहार किये।

ततो द्रोणो महाराज मागधश्च महारथः दुर्योधनसमादिष्टौ तं देशमुपजग्मतुः

O great king! Droṇa and the mahāratha from Māgadha were instructed by Duryodhana and came to the spot where Pārtha and Pāṇḍava Bhīmasena were.

हे महान राजा! द्रोण और मगध के महारथी दुर्योधन के निर्देश पर उस स्थान पर आये जहाँ पार्थ और पांडव भीमसेन थे।

यत्र पार्थो महाराज भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः कौरव्यस्य महासेनां जघ्नतुस्तौ महारथौ

O great king! The Pāṇḍava mahāratha-s, Pārtha and Bhīmasena, were slaying the great army of the Kaurava-s.

हे महान राजा! पांडव महारथी, पार्थ और भीमसेन, कौरवों की विशाल सेना को मार रहे थे।

जयत्सेनस्तु समरे भीमं भीमायुधं युवा विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैरष्टभिर्भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! In the encounter, the young Jayatsenā pierced Bhīmā, who possessed terrible weapons, with eight sharp arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! मुठभेड़ में, युवा जयत्सेना ने भीम को, जिसके पास भयानक हथियार थे, आठ तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तं भीमो दशभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनर्विव्याध सप्तभिः सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपाहरत्

Bhīmā pierced him back with ten arrows and again with seven. With a broad-headed arrow, he brought down his charioteer from the seat of the chariot.

भीम ने उसे दस बाणों से और फिर सात बाणों से घायल कर दिया। उसने चौड़े सिर वाले बाण से अपने सारथी को रथ की सीट से नीचे गिरा दिया।

उद्भ्रान्तैस्तुरगैः सोऽथ द्रवमाणैः समन्ततः मागधोऽपहृतो राजा सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः

The horses were no longer controlled and fled in different directions, dragging away the king of Māgadha, while all the soldiers looked on.

घोड़ों पर अब नियंत्रण नहीं रहा और वे मगध के राजा को घसीटते हुए अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गए, जबकि सभी सैनिक देखते रहे।

द्रोणस्तु विवरं लब्ध्वा भीमसेनं शिलीमुखैः विव्याध बाणैः सुशितैः पञ्चषष्ट्या तमायसैः

Detecting a weakness, Droṇa pierced Bhimsena with sixty-five extremely sharp iron arrows that had been sharpened on stone.

द्रोण ने कमजोरी जानकर भीमसेन को पत्थर पर नुकीले पैंसठ अत्यंत तीखे लोहे के बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तं भीमः समरश्लाघी गुरुं पितृसमं रणे विव्याध नवभिर्भल्लैस्तथा षष्ट्या च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Bhīmā prided himself in battle. In the encounter, he pierced his preceptor, who was like his father, with nine broad-headed arrows and followed it up with another sixty.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! भीम को युद्ध में गर्व था। मुठभेड़ में, उसने अपने गुरु को, जो उसके पिता के समान था, नौ चौड़े सिरों वाले बाणों से घायल कर दिया और उसके बाद अन्य साठ बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

अर्जुनस्तु सुशर्माणं विद्ध्वा बहुभिरायसैः व्यधमत्तस्य तत्सैन्यं महाभ्राणि यथानिलः

Arjuna pierced Susharma with many iron arrows and scattered his soldiers, like the wind dispersing a mās-s of clouds.

अर्जुन ने अनेक लोहे के बाणों से सुशर्मा को घायल कर दिया और उसके सैनिकों को उसी प्रकार तितर-बितर कर दिया, जैसे वायु बादलों को तितर-बितर कर देती है।

ततो भीष्मश्च राजा च सौबलश्च बृहद्बलः अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धा भीमसेनधनंजयौ

Bhīṣma, the king, Saubala and Bṛhadbala angrily attacked Bhīmasena and Dhanañjayā.

भीष्म, राजा, सौबल और बृहद्बल ने गुस्से में भीमसेन और धनंजय पर हमला किया।

तथैव पाण्डवाः शूरा धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः अभ्यद्रवन्रणे भीष्मं व्यादितास्यमिवान्तकम्

The brave Pāṇḍava-s and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna attacked Bhīṣma, who was advancing in the battle, like death with a gaping mouth.

युद्ध में आगे बढ़ रहे भीष्म पर वीर पांडवों और पराष्ट धृष्टद्युम्न ने ऐसे हमला किया जैसे मौत मुंह फुलाए हुए हो।

शिखण्डी तु समासाद्य भारतानां पितामहम् अभ्यद्रवत संहृष्टो भयं त्यक्त्वा यतव्रतम्

Śikhaṇḍī approached the grandfather of the Bhārata-s. He was cheerful and had abandoned fear. He attacked the one who was rigid in his vows.

शिखंडी भरत-पितामह के पास पहुंचे। वह प्रसन्नचित्त था और उसने डर छोड़ दिया था। उसने उस पर आक्रमण किया जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में कठोर था।

युधिष्ठिरमुखाः पार्थाः पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् अयोधयन्रणे भीष्मं संहताः सह सृञ्जयैः

The Pārtha-s, headed by Yudhiṣṭhira, placed Śikhaṇḍī at the forefront. Together with the Sṛñjaya-s, they fought against Bhīṣma in that battle.

युधिष्ठिर की अध्यक्षता में पार्थ-एस ने शिखंडी को सबसे आगे रखा। सृंजय के साथ मिलकर, उन्होंने उस युद्ध में भीष्म के खिलाफ लड़ाई लड़ी।

तथैव तावकाः सर्वे पुरस्कृत्य यतव्रतम् शिखण्डिप्रमुखान्पार्थान्योधयन्ति स्म संयुगे

All those on your side placed the one who was rigid in his vows at the forefront. They fought against the Pārtha-s in that battle, with Śikhaṇḍī at the forefront.

आपके पक्ष के सभी लोगों ने प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ रहने वाले को सबसे आगे रखा। वे उस युद्ध में पार्थ-वंश के विरुद्ध लड़े, जिसमें शिखंडी सबसे आगे थे।

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कौरवाणां भयावहम् तत्र पाण्डुसुतैः सार्धं भीष्मस्य विजयं प्रति

For the sake of victory over Bhīṣma, the battle that commenced there among the Kaurava-s was terrible. O lord of the earth! The sons of Pāṇḍu wished to triumph over Bhīṣma

भीष्म पर विजय पाने के लिए कौरवों के बीच वहां जो युद्ध शुरू हुआ वह भयानक था। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! पाण्डु के पुत्र भीष्म पर विजय प्राप्त करना चाहते थे

तावकानां रणे भीष्मो ग्लह आसीद्विशां पते तत्र हि द्यूतमायातं विजयायेतराय वा

and those on your side wished Bhīṣma's victory in the battle. It was like gambling with the dice and victory or defeat became the stake.

और आपके पक्ष के लोगों ने युद्ध में भीष्म की विजय की कामना की। यह पासों से जुआ खेलने जैसा था और जीत या हार दांव पर लग जाती थी।

धृष्टद्युम्नो महाराज सर्वसैन्यान्यचोदयत् अभिद्रवत गाङ्गेयं मा भैष्ट नरसत्तमाः

O great king! Dhṛṣṭadyumna incited all the soldiers. "O supreme among men! Attack Gāṅgeya. Do not be scared."

हे महान राजा! धृष्टद्युम्न ने सभी सैनिकों को भड़काया। "हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! गांगेय पर आक्रमण करो। डरो मत।"

सेनापतिवचः श्रुत्वा पाण्डवानां वरूथिनी भीष्ममेवाभ्ययात्तूर्णं प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा महाहवे

On hearing the words of the commander, the army of the Pāṇḍava-s quickly advanced against Bhīṣma. In that great battle, they were ready to give up their lives.

सेनापति की बातें सुनकर पांडव सेना शीघ्रता से भीष्म के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ी। उस महान युद्ध में वे अपने प्राणों की आहुति देने को तैयार थे।

भीष्मोऽपि रथिनां श्रेष्ठः प्रतिजग्राह तां चमूम् आपतन्तीं महाराज वेलामिव महोदधिः

O great king! Bhīṣma, best of rāṭha-s, resisted that army as it descended on him, like the shoreline against the great ocean.

हे महान राजा! रथ-श्रेष्ठ भीष्म ने उस सेना का प्रतिरोध किया जब वह विशाल महासागर के सामने तटरेखा की तरह उनके पास आई।
