संजय उवाच ततो मुहूर्तात्तुमुलः शब्दो हृदयकम्पनः अश्रूयत महाराज योधानां प्रयुयुत्सताम्

Sañjaya said: "O great king! After some time, a tumultuous sound could be heard, when the warriors prepared to fight, and it made the heart tremble.

संजय ने कहा: "हे महान राजा! कुछ समय के बाद, जब योद्धा लड़ने के लिए तैयार हुए, तो एक कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि सुनाई दी, और इससे दिल कांप उठा।

शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्वारणानां च बृंहितैः रथानां नेमिघोषैश्च दीर्यतीव वसुंधरा

There were the sounds of conch shells and drums. Elephants trumpeted. The wheels of the chariots thundered and the earth seemed to be torn apart.

शंख और नगाड़ों की आवाजें आ रही थीं। हाथी चिंघाड़ने लगे। रथों के पहिये गरजने लगे और पृथ्वी फटी हुई प्रतीत होने लगी।

हयानां हेषमाणानां योधानां तत्र गर्जताम् क्षणेन खं दिशश्चैव शब्देनापूरितं तदा

The horses neighed. The warriors roared.

घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे। योद्धाओं ने दहाड़ लगाई.

पुत्राणां तव दुर्धर्ष पाण्डवानां तथैव च समकम्पन्त सैन्यानि परस्परसमागमे

O unassailable one! The armies of your sons and those of the Pāṇḍava-s encountered each other and trembled.

हे अजेय! आपके पुत्रों तथा पाण्डवों की सेनाएँ एक-दूसरे से टकराकर काँपने लगीं।

तत्र नागा रथाश्चैव जाम्बूनदविभूषिताः भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त मेघा इव सविद्युतः

The elephants and the chariots were decorated with gold and were seen to be radiant, like clouds with lightning.

हाथी और रथ सोने से सजाये गये थे और बिजली के साथ बादलों के समान दीप्तिमान दिखाई दे रहे थे।

ध्वजा बहुविधाकारास्तावकानां नराधिप काञ्चनाङ्गदिनो रेजुर्ज्वलिता इव पावकाः

O lord of men! Those on your side had many different kinds of standards. They were adorned with golden rings and shone like the fire.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपके पक्ष के लोगों के पास कई प्रकार के मानक थे। वे सोने के छल्ले से सुशोभित थे और आग की तरह चमक रहे थे।

स्वेषां चैव परेषां च समदृश्यन्त भारत महेन्द्रकेतवः शुभ्रा महेन्द्रसदनेष्विव

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Those on your side and those on the side of the enemy were seen to be as pure as the great Indra's standard, in the great Indra's abode.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके पक्ष के लोग और शत्रु पक्ष के लोग, महान इंद्र के निवास में, महान इंद्र के मानक के समान पवित्र दिखाई देते थे।

काञ्चनैः कवचैर्वीरा ज्वलनार्कसमप्रभैः संनद्धाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त ग्रहाः प्रज्वलिता इव

The brave ones were clad in golden armour. They blazed like the fiery sun. Armoured, they seemed to be like the blazing planets.

वीर सुनहरे कवच पहने हुए थे। वे प्रचंड सूर्य के समान चमक रहे थे। बख्तरबंद, वे धधकते हुए ग्रहों के समान प्रतीत होते थे।

उद्यतैरायुधैश्चित्रैस्तलबद्धाः पताकिनः ऋषभाक्षा महेष्वासाश्चमूमुखगता बभुः

They held upraised weapons and wore guards on their palms. They possessed standards. They had eyes like bulls. They were great archers and placed themselves at the forefront.

उन्होंने हथियार उठाए हुए थे और अपनी हथेलियों पर गार्ड पहने हुए थे। उनके पास मानक थे। उनकी आँखें बैल जैसी थीं। वे महान धनुर्धर थे और स्वयं को सबसे आगे रखते थे।

पृष्ठगोपास्तु भीष्मस्य पुत्रास्तव नराधिप दुःशासनो दुर्विषहो दुर्मुखो दुःसहस्तथा

O lord of men! Among your sons, there were those who protected Bhīṣma from the rear—Duḥśāsana, Durviṣaha, Durmukha, Duḥsaha,

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपके पुत्रों में दु:शासन, दुर्विषा, दुर्मुख, दु:सह, भीष्म की पीछे से रक्षा करने वाले भी थे।

विविंशतिश्चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च महारथः सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवाः शलः

Viviṃśati, Citrasenā and mahāratha Vikarṇa. There were also Satyavrata, Purumitra, Jayā, Bhurishrava and Śala.

विविंशति, चित्रसेना और महारथ विकर्ण। सत्यव्रत, पुरुमित्र, जया, भूरिश्रवा और शल भी थे।

रथा विंशतिसाहस्रास्तथैषामनुयायिनः अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः

They were followed by twenty thousand chariots. Abhīṣāha, Śūrasena, Śibi, Vasāti,

शाल्वा मत्स्यास्तथाम्बष्ठास्त्रिगर्ताः केकयास्तथा सौवीराः कितवाः प्राच्याः प्रतीच्योदीच्यमालवाः

Śālva, Matysa, Ambaṣṭha, Trigarta, Kekaya, Sauvīra, Kitava and those from the east, west and the north Mālavā—

शाल्व, मत्यस, अम्बष्ठ, त्रिगर्त, केकय, सौवीर, कितव और पूर्व, पश्चिम और उत्तर मालव-

द्वादशैते जनपदाः सर्वे शूरास्तनुत्यजः महता रथवंशेन तेऽभ्यरक्षन्पितामहम्

all the brave ones from these twelve regions advanced, ready to give up their lives. They protected the grandfather with an array of large chariots.

इन बारह क्षेत्रों के सभी बहादुर आगे बढ़े, अपनी जान देने के लिए तैयार थे। उन्होंने बड़े-बड़े रथों की शृंखला से दादाजी की रक्षा की।

अनीकं दशसाहस्रं कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम् मागधो येन नृपतिस्तद्रथानीकमन्वयात्

With an army that consisted of ten thousand swift elephants, the king of Māgadha followed that array of chariots.

दस हजार तीव्रगामी हाथियों से युक्त सेना लेकर मगध के राजा ने रथों की उस शृंखला का पीछा किया।

रथानां चक्ररक्षाश्च पादरक्षाश्च दन्तिनाम् अभूवन्वाहिनीमध्ये शतानामयुतानि षट्

Those who protected the wheels of chariots and the feet of the elephants in the midst of that army numbered six million.

उस सेना के बीच में रथों के पहियों और हाथियों के पैरों की रक्षा करने वालों की संख्या साठ लाख थी।

पादाताश्चाग्रतोऽगच्छन्धनुश्चर्मासिपाणयः अनेकशतसाहस्रा नखरप्रासयोधिनः

The infantry marched in advance, with bows, shields and swords in their hands. There were many hundreds and thousands of them and they fought with nails and lances.

पैदल सेना हाथों में धनुष, ढाल और तलवारें लेकर आगे चल रही थी। उनकी संख्या सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में थी और वे कीलों और भालों से लड़े।

अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च तव पुत्रस्य भारत अदृश्यन्त महाराज गङ्गेव यमुनान्तरे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O great king! The eleven akṣauhiṇī-s of your sons looked like the Gāṅga separated from the Yāmuna."

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे महान राजा! आपके पुत्रों की ग्यारह अक्षौहिणीयाँ यमुना से अलग हुई गंगा के समान लग रही थीं।"
