धृतराष्ट्र उवाच एवं बहुगुणं सैन्यमेवं बहुविधं परम् व्यूढमेवं यथाशास्त्रममोघं चैव संजय

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Our army is supreme and possesses many qualities. It has many different components. O Sañjaya! It has been arranged in a vyūha according to the sacred texts and should be unassailable.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: "हमारी सेना सर्वोच्च है और इसमें कई गुण हैं। इसके कई अलग-अलग घटक हैं। हे संजय! इसे पवित्र ग्रंथों के अनुसार एक व्यूह में व्यवस्थित किया गया है और इसे अजेय होना चाहिए।"

पुष्टमस्माकमत्यन्तमभिकामं च नः सदा प्रह्वमव्यसनोपेतं पुरस्ताद्दृष्टविक्रमम्

We have sustained it and it has always been extremely devoted to us. The soldiers are disciplined and free from vice and they have exhibited their valour earlier.

हमने इसे कायम रखा है और यह हमेशा हमारे प्रति बेहद समर्पित रहा है। सैनिक अनुशासित और दुर्गुणों से मुक्त हैं और उन्होंने पहले भी अपनी वीरता का प्रदर्शन किया है।

नातिवृद्धमबालं च न कृशं न च पीवरम् लघुवृत्तायतप्रायं सारगात्रमनामयम्

They are not too old. Nor are they too young. They are not lean. Nor are they fat. They are active and tall. Their bodies are well-developed and they are free from disease.

उनकी उम्र ज्यादा नहीं है. न ही वे बहुत छोटे हैं. वे दुबले-पतले नहीं हैं. न ही वे मोटे हैं. वे सक्रिय और लम्बे हैं। इनका शरीर सुविकसित होता है और ये रोगमुक्त होते हैं।

आत्तसंनाहशस्त्रं च बहुशस्त्रपरिग्रहम् असियुद्धे नियुद्धे च गदायुद्धे च कोविदम्

They are armoured and trained in the use of weapons. They possess many kinds of weapons. They are skilled in fighting with swords, bare arms and in fighting with clubs.

वे बख्तरबंद हैं और हथियारों के इस्तेमाल में प्रशिक्षित हैं। उनके पास कई तरह के हथियार होते हैं. वे तलवारों, नंगे हथियारों और लाठियों से लड़ने में कुशल हैं।

प्रासर्ष्टितोमरेष्वाजौ परिघेष्वायसेषु च भिण्डिपालेषु शक्तीषु मुसलेषु च सर्वशः

Lances, swords, clubs, iron maces, catapults, javelins and all kinds of maces,

भाले, तलवारें, लाठियाँ, लोहे की गदाएँ, गुलेल, भाले और सभी प्रकार की गदाएँ,

कम्पनेषु च चापेषु कणपेषु च सर्वशः क्षेपणीषु च चित्रासु मुष्टियुद्धेषु कोविदम्

kampanā-s, bows, kanapa-s, different kinds of slings, fighting with the bare fists—they are skilled in all these.

कम्पाना-एस, धनुष, कनाप-एस, विभिन्न प्रकार के गोफन, नंगी मुट्ठी से लड़ना - वे इन सभी में कुशल हैं।

अपरोक्षं च विद्यासु व्यायामेषु कृतश्रमम् शस्त्रग्रहणविद्यासु सर्वासु परिनिष्ठितम्

They are devoted to training. They have persevered in exercises. They have devotedly learned everything about the handling of weapons.

वे प्रशिक्षण के प्रति समर्पित हैं. वे अभ्यास में लगे हुए हैं। उन्होंने समर्पण भाव से हथियारों के संचालन के बारे में सब कुछ सीखा है।

आरोहे पर्यवस्कन्दे सरणे सान्तरप्लुते सम्यक्प्रहरणे याने व्यपयाने च कोविदम्

They have trained in mounting and descending, riding, moving forward, stepping back, striking effectively, advancing and retreating and are skilled.

उन्होंने चढ़ने और उतरने, घुड़सवारी करने, आगे बढ़ने, पीछे हटने, प्रभावी ढंग से हमला करने, आगे बढ़ने और पीछे हटने का प्रशिक्षण लिया है और कुशल हैं।

नागाश्वरथयानेषु बहुशः सुपरीक्षितम् परीक्ष्य च यथान्यायं वेतनेनोपपादितम्

In many ways, they have been tested with elephants, horses, chariots and vehicles. Having been appropriately tested, they have been given the right kind of pay.

हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और वाहनों से अनेक प्रकार से इनका परीक्षण किया जा चुका है। उचित परीक्षण करके उन्हें सही प्रकार का वेतन दिया गया है।

न गोष्ठ्या नोपचारेण न च बन्धुनिमित्ततः न सौहृदबलैश्चापि नाकुलीनपरिग्रहैः

This has not been influenced by lineage, favours, relationships, the strength of friendship, or connections of birth or marriage.

यह वंश, उपकार, रिश्ते, दोस्ती की ताकत, या जन्म या विवाह के संबंधों से प्रभावित नहीं हुआ है।

समृद्धजनमार्यं च तुष्टसत्कृतबान्धवम् कृतोपकारभूयिष्ठं यशस्वि च मनस्वि च

They are prosperous people and noble. Their relatives have been treated well by us and are satisfied. We have shown them many favours. They are famous and honoured

वे समृद्ध लोग और कुलीन हैं। उनके रिश्तेदारों के साथ हमने अच्छा व्यवहार किया है और वे संतुष्ट हैं। हमने उन पर बहुत उपकार किये हैं। वे प्रसिद्ध और सम्मानित हैं

सजयैश्च नरैर्मुख्यैर्बहुशो मुख्यकर्मभिः लोकपालोपमैस्तात पालितं लोकविश्रुतैः

O son! They are protected by many victorious ones who are the foremost among men, famous in the worlds because of their prominent deeds.They are like the guardians of the worlds.

हे वत्स वे कई विजयी लोगों द्वारा संरक्षित हैं जो मनुष्यों में अग्रणी हैं, अपने प्रमुख कार्यों के कारण दुनिया में प्रसिद्ध हैं। वे दुनिया के संरक्षक की तरह हैं।

बहुभिः क्षत्रियैर्गुप्तं पृथिव्यां लोकसंमतैः अस्मानभिगतैः कामात्सबलैः सपदानुगैः

They are protected by many kṣatriya-s, who are honoured by all the people on earth. They have to come because of their own wishes, with their armies and their followers.

वे कई क्षत्रियों द्वारा संरक्षित हैं, जिनका पृथ्वी पर सभी लोगों द्वारा सम्मान किया जाता है। उन्हें अपनी इच्छा से, अपनी सेना और अपने अनुयायियों के साथ आना पड़ता है।

महोदधिमिवापूर्णमापगाभिः समन्ततः अपक्षैः पक्षसंकाशै रथैर्नागैश्च संवृतम्

This is like a large ocean, with rivers flowing into it from all directions. There are many elephants and chariots. Though these do not actually have wings, they seem to possess wings.

यह एक विशाल महासागर की तरह है, जिसमें सभी दिशाओं से नदियाँ बहती हैं। वहाँ बहुत सारे हाथी और रथ हैं। हालाँकि वास्तव में इनके पंख नहीं होते, फिर भी ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि इनके पास पंख हैं।

नानायोधजलं भीमं वाहनोर्मितरङ्गिणम् क्षेपण्यसिगदाशक्तिशरप्राससमाकुलम्

Our many warriors constitute the terrible waters. The mounts are the waves. It is full of slings, swords, clubs, lances, bows and javelins.

हमारे अनेक योद्धा भयानक जल का निर्माण करते हैं। माउंट लहरें हैं. यह गोफन, तलवारें, लाठियाँ, भाले, धनुष और भाले से भरा हुआ है।

ध्वजभूषणसंबाधं रत्नपट्टेन संचितम् वाहनैः परिसर्पद्भिर्वायुवेगविकम्पितम्

There are standards and ornaments that are embellished with jewelled cloth. The advancing mounts are like the agitating force of the wind.

ऐसे मानक और आभूषण हैं जो रत्नजड़ित कपड़े से सुशोभित हैं। आगे बढ़ते हुए माउंट हवा की उत्तेजित शक्ति की तरह हैं।

अपारमिव गर्जन्तं सागरप्रतिमं महत् द्रोणभीष्माभिसंगुप्तं गुप्तं च कृतवर्मणा

It is like a great and roaring ocean, without any limits. It is protected by Droṇa and Bhīṣma and also protected by Kritavarma, Kṛpa and Duḥśāsana and others who are led by Jayadratha.

यह एक विशाल और गरजते हुए सागर की तरह है, जिसकी कोई सीमा नहीं है। यह द्रोण और भीष्म द्वारा संरक्षित है और कृतवर्मा, कृप और दुःशासन और जयद्रथ के नेतृत्व वाले अन्य लोगों द्वारा भी संरक्षित है।

कृपदुःशासनाभ्यां च जयद्रथमुखैस्तथा भगदत्तविकर्णाभ्यां द्रौणिसौबलबाह्लिकैः

It is also protected by Bhagadatta and Vikarṇa, Droṇa's son, Saubala and Bahlika and many other great-souled ones who are the foremost warriors of the world.

यह भगदत्त और विकर्ण, द्रोण के पुत्र, सौबल और बाह्लीक और कई अन्य महान आत्माओं द्वारा भी संरक्षित है जो दुनिया के सबसे प्रमुख योद्धा हैं।

गुप्तं प्रवीरैर्लोकस्य सारवद्भिर्महात्मभिः यदहन्यत संग्रामे दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम्

That this should be slaughtered in battle can only be because of earlier destiny.

इसका युद्ध में वध होना केवल पूर्व प्रारब्ध के कारण ही हो सकता है।

नैतादृशं समुद्योगं दृष्टवन्तोऽथ मानुषाः ऋषयो वा महाभागाः पुराणा भुवि संजय

O Sañjaya! Such a preparation on earth has never been seen before, by men, or by the immensely fortunate and ancient riṣi-s.

हे संजय! पृथ्वी पर ऐसी तैयारी पहले कभी मनुष्यों द्वारा, या अत्यधिक भाग्यशाली और प्राचीन ऋषियों द्वारा नहीं देखी गई थी।

ईदृशो हि बलौघस्तु युक्तः शस्त्रास्त्रसंपदा वध्यते यत्र संग्रामे किमन्यद्भागधेयतः

This large army is prosperous with every kind of weapon. If it should be killed in battle, how can that be anything other than destiny?

यह विशाल सेना हर प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्र से सम्पन्न है। यदि इसे युद्ध में मारा जाना चाहिए, तो वह नियति के अलावा और कुछ कैसे हो सकता है?

विपरीतमिदं सर्वं प्रतिभाति स्म संजय यत्रेदृशं बलं घोरं नातरद्युधि पाण्डवान्

O Sañjaya! To me, everything seems to be contrary. Such a terrible army cannot fight with the Pāṇḍava-s in battle.

हे संजय! मुझे तो सब कुछ विपरीत ही लगता है. इतनी भयानक सेना युद्ध में पांडवों से नहीं लड़ सकती।

अथ वा पाण्डवार्थाय देवास्तत्र समागताः युध्यन्ते मामकं सैन्यं यदवध्यन्त संजय

Perhaps the gods have assembled here in the cause of the Pāṇḍava-s. O Sañjaya! Perhaps they are fighting against my soldiers and that is the reason they are being killed.

कदाचित देवता पाण्डवों के पक्ष में यहाँ एकत्रित हुए हों। हे संजय! शायद वे मेरे सैनिकों के खिलाफ लड़ रहे हैं और यही वजह है कि वे मारे जा रहे हैं.'

उक्तो हि विदुरेणेह हितं पथ्यं च संजय न च गृह्णाति तन्मन्दः पुत्रो दुर्योधनो मम

O Sañjaya! Vidūra had earlier spoken about what was beneficial medicine for me. But my evil-minded son, Duryodhana, did not accept it.

हे संजय! विदुर ने पहले बताया था कि मेरे लिए कौन सी औषधि लाभदायक है। परन्तु मेरे दुष्टबुद्धि पुत्र दुर्योधन ने इसे स्वीकार नहीं किया।

तस्य मन्ये मतिः पूर्वं सर्वज्ञस्य महात्मनः आसीद्यथागतं तात येन दृष्टमिदं पुरा

It is my view that the great-souled and omniscient one had known all this earlier. O son! He knew what was going to happen.

मेरा विचार है कि उस महात्मा और सर्वज्ञ ने यह सब पहले ही जान लिया था। हे वत्स वह जानता था कि क्या होने वाला है।

अथ वा भाव्यमेवं हि संजयैतेन सर्वथा पुरा धात्रा यथा सृष्टं तत्तथा न तदन्यथा

It was preordained destiny. O Sañjaya! Perhaps all this is exactly as the creator had ordained it earlier. That is the reason it cannot be countered.

यह पूर्वनिर्धारित नियति थी. हे संजय! शायद यह सब बिल्कुल वैसा ही है जैसा विधाता ने पहले ही निर्धारित किया था। यही कारण है कि इसका प्रतिकार नहीं किया जा सकता।
