धृतराष्ट्र उवाच बहूनीह विचित्राणि द्वैरथानि स्म संजय पाण्डूनां मामकैः सार्धमश्रौषं तव जल्पतः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Sañjaya! As you have described them, I have heard about the many wonderful duels that took place between those on the side of the sons of Pāṇḍu and those on my side.

धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा: "हे संजय! जैसा कि आपने उनका वर्णन किया है, मैंने पांडु के पुत्रों और मेरे पक्ष के लोगों के बीच हुए कई अद्भुत द्वंद्वों के बारे में सुना है।

न चैव मामकं कंचिद्धृष्टं शंससि संजय नित्यं पाण्डुसुतान्हृष्टानभग्नांश्चैव शंससि

O Sañjaya! But you have never spoken about those on my side being happy. You have always described the sons of Pāṇḍu as happy and as those who are never routed.

हे संजय! लेकिन आपने कभी मेरे पक्ष के लोगों के ख़ुश होने की बात नहीं की. आपने पाण्डु के पुत्रों को सदैव सुखी तथा कभी पराजित न होने वाला बताया है।

जीयमानान्विमनसो मामकान्विगतौजसः वदसे संयुगे सूत दिष्टमेतदसंशयम्

O sūta! You have spoken about those on my side being distressed and deprived of energy in the battle. There is no doubt that this is because of destiny."

हे सुता! आपने मेरे पक्ष के लोगों के व्यथित होने और युद्ध में ऊर्जा से वंचित होने की बात कही है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि यह नियति के कारण है।”

संजय उवाच यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं युद्धे चेष्टन्ति तावकाः दर्शयानाः परं शक्त्या पौरुषं पुरुषर्षभ

Sañjaya replied: O bull among men! Those on your side are striving to do battle, to the best of their capacity and the best of their enterprise. They are displaying supreme manliness, to the best of their capability

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे मनुष्यों में बैल! आपके पक्ष के लोग अपनी सर्वोत्तम क्षमता और सर्वोत्तम उद्यम से युद्ध करने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। वे अपनी सर्वोत्तम क्षमता से सर्वोच्च पुरुषत्व का प्रदर्शन कर रहे हैं

गङ्गायाः सुरनद्या वै स्वादुभूतं यथोदकम् महोदधिगुणाभ्यासाल्लवणत्वं निगच्छति

The water of Gāṅga, the river of the gods, is sweet. But when it merges into the great ocean, it attains the quality of salinity.

देवताओं की नदी गंगा का जल मीठा है। परंतु जब यह विशाल महासागर में विलीन हो जाती है तो खारेपन का गुण प्राप्त कर लेती है।

तथा तत्पौरुषं राजंस्तावकानां महात्मनाम् प्राप्य पाण्डुसुतान्वीरान्व्यर्थं भवति संयुगे

O king! The manliness of the great-souled ones on your side is like that. When they confront the brave sons of Pāṇḍu in battle, they obtain no success.

हे राजा! आपके पक्ष के महानुभावों का पुरुषार्थ ऐसा ही है। जब वे युद्ध में पांडु के वीर पुत्रों का सामना करते हैं, तो उन्हें कोई सफलता नहीं मिलती है।

घटमानान्यथाशक्ति कुर्वाणान्कर्म दुष्करम् न दोषेण कुरुश्रेष्ठ कौरवान्गन्तुमर्हसि

They are trying to the best of their strength and are performing extremely difficult tasks. O foremost among the Kuru-s! You should not censure them because they have merged with the Kaurava-s.

वे अपनी पूरी ताकत से प्रयास कर रहे हैं और बेहद कठिन कार्य कर रहे हैं। हे कुरुवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! तुम्हें उनकी निन्दा नहीं करनी चाहिए क्योंकि वे कौरवों में मिल गये हैं।

तवापराधात्सुमहान्सपुत्रस्य विशां पते पृथिव्याः प्रक्षयो घोरो यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनः

O lord of the earth! This great and terrible destruction of the earth, and the extension of Yāma's kingdom, has come about because of your crimes and those of your sons.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! पृथ्वी का यह महान और भयानक विनाश, और यम के राज्य का विस्तार, आपके और आपके पुत्रों के अपराधों के कारण हुआ है।

आत्मदोषात्समुत्पन्नं शोचितुं नार्हसे नृप न हि रक्षन्ति राजानः सर्वार्थान्नापि जीवितम्

O king! Since it is because of your own sins, you should not grieve over this.

हे राजा! चूँकि यह तुम्हारे ही पापों के कारण है, तुम्हें इस पर शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।

युद्धे सुकृतिनां लोकानिच्छन्तो वसुधाधिपाः चमूं विगाह्य युध्यन्ते नित्यं स्वर्गपरायणाः

The lords of the earth desire the worlds that can be obtained by performing good deeds in battle. Striving for heaven, they are fighting and penetrating the army formations.

पृथ्वी के स्वामी उन लोकों की इच्छा रखते हैं जो युद्ध में अच्छे कर्म करने से प्राप्त किये जा सकते हैं। स्वर्ग के लिए प्रयास करते हुए, वे लड़ रहे हैं और सेना संरचनाओं में घुस रहे हैं।

पूर्वाह्णे तु महाराज प्रावर्तत जनक्षयः तन्ममैकमना भूत्वा शृणु देवासुरोपमम्

O great king! On the forenoon of that day, there was a great destruction of people, like that in the battle between the gods and the āsura-s. Listen with single-minded attention.

हे महान राजा! उस दिन पूर्वाह्न में, देवताओं और असुरों के बीच हुए युद्ध की तरह लोगों का बहुत बड़ा विनाश हुआ। एकचित्त होकर ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो।

आवन्त्यौ तु महेष्वासौ महात्मानौ महाबलौ इरावन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य समेयातां रणोत्कटौ तेषां प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्

The two great-souled and great archers from Avanti, immensely strong, saw Irāvat in that battle and encountered him with ferocity. The battle that took place between them was tumultuous and made the body hair stand up.

अवंती के दो महाबली और अत्यंत बलशाली धनुर्धरों ने उस युद्ध में इरावत को देखा और उसका बड़ी वीरता से सामना किया। उन दोनों के बीच जो युद्ध हुआ वह अत्यंत घमासान और शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े कर देने वाला था।

इरावांस्तु सुसंक्रुद्धो भ्रातरौ देवरूपिणौ विव्याध निशितैस्तूर्णं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः तावेनं प्रत्यविध्येतां समरे चित्रयोधिनौ

Irāvat was extremely enraged. He quickly pierced those brothers, who were like gods, with sharp and straight-tufted arrows. In that encounter, those wonderful warriors pierced him back.

इरावत अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गया। उसने शीघ्र ही उन देवताओं के समान भाइयों को तीखे और सीधे नुकीले बाणों से घायल कर दिया। उस मुठभेड़ में, उन अद्भुत योद्धाओं ने उसे पीछे से छेद दिया।

युध्यतां हि तथा राजन्विशेषो न व्यदृश्यत यततां शत्रुनाशाय कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणाम्

O king! They fought on and there was nothing to differentiate the two parties. They sought to kill the enemy and neutralized each other's endeavours.

हे राजा! वे लड़ते रहे और दोनों पक्षों में अंतर करने वाली कोई बात नहीं थी। उन्होंने दुश्मन को मारने की कोशिश की और एक-दूसरे के प्रयासों को बेअसर कर दिया।

इरावांस्तु ततो राजन्ननुविन्दस्य सायकैः चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहाननयद्यमसादनम्

O king! Irāvat used four arrows to despatch his four horses to Yāma's abode. O venerable one! With two extremely sharp and broad-headed arrows,

हे राजा! इरावत ने अपने चार घोड़ों को यम के निवास पर भेजने के लिए चार तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया। हे आदरणीय! दो अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण एवं चौड़े सिरों वाले बाणों से,

भल्लाभ्यां च सुतीक्ष्णाभ्यां धनुः केतुं च मारिष चिच्छेद समरे राजंस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्

he sliced off his bow and standard. O king! In that encounter, this was extraordinary.

उसने अपना धनुष और ध्वज काट डाला। हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, यह असाधारण था।

त्यक्त्वानुविन्दोऽथ रथं विन्दस्य रथमास्थितः धनुर्गृहीत्वा नवमं भारसाधनमुत्तमम्

Then, abandoning his chariot, Anuvinda ascended Vinda's chariot, and taking up an excellent, supreme bow capable of bearing great weight.

तब, अनुविन्द अपने रथ को छोड़कर, विन्द के रथ पर चढ़ गये, और एक उत्कृष्ट, सर्वोच्च धनुष उठा लिया जो अत्यधिक वजन सहन करने में सक्षम था।

तावेकस्थौ रणे वीरावावन्त्यौ रथिनां वरौ शरान्मुमुचतुस्तूर्णमिरावति महात्मनि

In that battle, those two brave ones from Avanti, supreme among rāṭha-s, were stationed on the same chariot. They swiftly showered arrows on the great-souled Irāvat.

उस युद्ध में रथों में श्रेष्ठ अवंती के वे दोनों वीर एक ही रथ पर तैनात थे। उन्होंने महाबली इरावत पर तेजी से बाणों की वर्षा की।

ताभ्यां मुक्ता महावेगाः शराः काञ्चनभूषणाः दिवाकरपथं प्राप्य छादयामासुरम्बरम्

They released extremely swift arrows, decorated with gold. They covered the sky and reached the path of the sun.

उन्होंने सोने से सजे अत्यंत तीव्र बाण छोड़े। उन्होंने आकाश को ढँक लिया और सूर्य के पथ पर पहुँच गये।

इरावांस्तु ततः क्रुद्धो भ्रातरौ तौ महारथौ ववर्ष शरवर्षेण सारथिं चाप्यपातयत्

Irāvat became extremely angry in that battle and showered down arrows on those mahāratha brothers. He brought down their charioteer.

उस युद्ध में इरावत अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने उन महारथ भाइयों पर बाणों की वर्षा कर दी। उसने उनके सारथी को नीचे उतारा।

तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ गतसत्त्वेऽथ सारथौ रथः प्रदुद्राव दिशः समुद्भ्रान्तहयस्ततः

Having lost his life, the charioteer fell down on the ground. The horses were no longer controlled and dragged the chariot off in various directions.

सारथी प्राण त्यागकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा। घोड़ों पर अब नियंत्रण नहीं रहा और वे रथ को विभिन्न दिशाओं में घसीटने लगे।

तौ स जित्वा महाराज नागराजसुतासुतः पौरुषं ख्यापयंस्तूर्णं व्यधमत्तव वाहिनीम्

O great king! The son of the nāga king's daughter triumphed in this way. He quickly displayed his manliness and began to slaughter your soldiers.

हे महान राजा! इस प्रकार नाग राजा की पुत्री के पुत्र की विजय हुई। उसने तुरंत अपना पौरुष दिखाया और आपके सैनिकों का वध करना शुरू कर दिया।

सा वध्यमाना समरे धार्तराष्ट्री महाचमूः वेगान्बहुविधांश्चक्रे विषं पीत्वेव मानवः

Thus killed in battle, the great army of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra reeled around in many directions, like a man who has drunk poison.

इस प्रकार युद्ध में मारे गये धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की विशाल सेना विष पीये हुए मनुष्य की भाँति अनेक दिशाओं में घूमती रही।

हैडिम्बो राक्षसेन्द्रस्तु भगदत्तं समाद्रवत् रथेनादित्यवर्णेन सध्वजेन महाबलः

Hiḍimbā's son, Indra among the rākṣasa-s, advanced against Bhagadatta. The immensely strong one was on a chariot that had the complexion of the sun and possessed a standard.

हिडिम्बा का पुत्र, राक्षसों में से इंद्र, भगदत्त के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा। वह अत्यंत शक्तिशाली रथ पर सवार था, जिसका रंग सूर्य जैसा था और उसके पास एक ध्वज था।

ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा नागराजं समास्थितः यथा वज्रधरः पूर्वं संग्रामे तारकामये

The king of Prāgjyotiṣa was seated on a king of elephants, like the wielder of the vajra in ancient times, in the tārakāmaya battle.

प्रागज्योतिष के राजा तारकामय युद्ध में हाथियों के राजा पर बैठे थे, जैसे प्राचीन काल में वज्र का स्वामी होता था।

तत्र देवाः सगन्धर्वा ऋषयश्च समागताः विशेषं न स्म विविदुर्हैडिम्बभगदत्तयोः

The gods, together with the gāndharva-s, and the riṣi-s assembled and were unable to differentiate between Hiḍimbā's son and Bhagadatta.

देवता, गंधर्वों और ऋषियों के साथ इकट्ठे हुए और हिडिम्बा के पुत्र और भगदत्त के बीच अंतर करने में असमर्थ थे।

यथा सुरपतिः शक्रस्त्रासयामास दानवान् तथैव समरे राजंस्त्रासयामास पाण्डवान्

Just as Śākra, the lord of the gods, had driven the dānava-s away with weapons, in that encounter, the king drove the Pāṇḍava-s away in all directions.

जिस प्रकार देवताओं के स्वामी शक्र ने दानवों को हथियारों से खदेड़ दिया था, उसी प्रकार उस मुठभेड़ में राजा ने पांडवों को सभी दिशाओं में खदेड़ दिया।

तेन विद्राव्यमाणास्ते पाण्डवाः सर्वतोदिशम् त्रातारं नाभ्यविन्दन्त स्वेष्वनीकेषु भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The Pāṇḍava-s were driven away in all the directions and within their own ranks, could not find a single one who could protect them.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पांडवों को सभी दिशाओं में खदेड़ दिया गया और अपनी ही सेना में उन्हें एक भी ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं मिला जो उनकी रक्षा कर सके।

भैमसेनिं रथस्थं तु तत्रापश्याम भारत शेषा विमनसो भूत्वा प्राद्रवन्त महारथाः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! But we saw Bhīmasena's son stationed on his chariot there, though the other mahāratha-s had fled with dispirited hearts.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! लेकिन हमने वहां भीमसेन के पुत्र को अपने रथ पर तैनात देखा, हालांकि अन्य महारथ निराश मन से भाग गए थे।

निवृत्तेषु तु पाण्डूनां पुनः सैन्येषु भारत आसीन्निष्टानको घोरस्तव सैन्येषु संयुगे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the soldiers of the Pāṇḍu-s returned again, in that encounter, your soldiers let out a terrible roar.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब पाण्डु सैनिक पुनः लौटे तो उस मुठभेड़ में आपके सैनिकों ने भयंकर गर्जना की।

घटोत्कचस्ततो राजन्भगदत्तं महारणे शरैः प्रच्छादयामास मेरुं गिरिमिवाम्बुदः

O king! In that great battle, Ghaṭotkaca enveloped Bhagadatta with arrows, like clouds raining down on Mount Meru.

हे राजा! उस महान युद्ध में घटोत्कच ने भगदत्त को बाणों से इस प्रकार घेर लिया, जैसे मेरु पर्वत पर बादल बरस रहे हों।

निहत्य ताञ्शरान्राजा राक्षसस्य धनुश्च्युतान् भैमसेनिं रणे तूर्णं सर्वमर्मस्वताडयत्

The king repulsed the arrows released from the rākṣasa's bow and in that battle, quickly pierced Bhīmasena's son in all his inner organs.

राजा ने राक्षस के धनुष से छोड़े गए बाणों को खदेड़ दिया और उस युद्ध में भीमसेन के पुत्र को उसके सभी आंतरिक अंगों में तेजी से छेद दिया।

स ताड्यमानो बहुभिः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः न विव्यथे राक्षसेन्द्रो भिद्यमान इवाचलः

He oppressed him with many straight-tufted arrows. But the Indra among rākṣasa-s was not distressed and was like an immobile mountain.

उसने अनेक सीधे नुकीले बाणों से उस पर अत्याचार किया। लेकिन राक्षसों के बीच इंद्र व्यथित नहीं थे और एक स्थिर पर्वत की तरह थे।

तस्य प्राग्ज्योतिषः क्रुद्धस्तोमरान्स चतुर्दश प्रेषयामास समरे तांश्च चिच्छेद राक्षसः

At this, Prāgjyotiṣa became angry. In that encounter, he hurled fourteen javelins. However, the rākṣasa sliced them down.

इस पर प्रागज्योतिष क्रोधित हो गये। उस मुठभेड़ में उन्होंने चौदह भाले फेंके। हालाँकि, राक्षस ने उन्हें काट डाला।

स तांश्छित्त्वा महाबाहुस्तोमरान्निशितैः शरैः भगदत्तं च विव्याध सप्तत्या कङ्कपत्रिभिः

Having sliced the javelins down with his sharp arrows, the mighty-armed one pierced Bhagadatta with seventy gold-tufted arrows.

अपने तीखे बाणों से भालों को काटकर महाबाहु वीर ने सत्तर स्वर्णजटित बाणों से भगदत्त को घायल कर दिया।

ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजन्प्रहसन्निव भारत तस्याश्वांश्चतुरः संख्ये पातयामास सायकैः

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! But Prāgjyotiṣa only laughed. In that battle, he used arrows to bring down his four horses.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! लेकिन प्रागज्योतिष केवल हँसे। उस युद्ध में, उसने अपने चार घोड़ों को गिराने के लिए तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

स हताश्वे रथे तिष्ठन्राक्षसेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् शक्तिं चिक्षेप वेगेन प्राग्ज्योतिषगजं प्रति

Though the horses were slain, the powerful Indra among rākṣasa-s remained stationed on his chariot. He powerfully hurled a javelin towards Prāgjyotiṣa's elephant.

यद्यपि घोड़े मारे गए, राक्षसों में शक्तिशाली इंद्र अपने रथ पर तैनात रहे। उसने प्रागज्योतिष के हाथी की ओर जोरदार भाला फेंका।

तामापतन्तीं सहसा हेमदण्डां सुवेगिताम् त्रिधा चिच्छेद नृपतिः सा व्यकीर्यत मेदिनीम्

This possessed a golden shaft and was extremely swift. As it suddenly descended, the king cut it down into three and shattered, it fell down on the ground.

इसमें एक सुनहरा बाण था और यह अत्यंत तेज़ था। जैसे ही वह अचानक नीचे उतरा, राजा ने उसके तीन टुकड़े कर दिये और टुकड़े-टुकड़े होकर वह भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

शक्तिं विनिहतां दृष्ट्वा हैडिम्बः प्राद्रवद्भयात् यथेन्द्रस्य रणात्पूर्वं नमुचिर्दैत्यसत्तमः

On seeing that the javelin had been destroyed, Hiḍimbā's son fled and left the field of battle, like in ancient times, Namuci, supreme among daitya-s, had fled from Indra.

यह देखकर कि भाला नष्ट हो गया, हिडिम्बा का पुत्र भाग गया और युद्ध का मैदान छोड़ दिया, जैसे प्राचीन काल में, दैत्यों में सर्वोच्च नमुची, इंद्र से भाग गया था।

तं विजित्य रणे शूरं विक्रान्तं ख्यातपौरुषम् अजेयं समरे राजन्यमेन वरुणेन च

The brave and valiant one, famous for his manliness, won that battle. O king! He was invincible in battle, like Yāma and Vāruṇa.

अपनी मर्दानगी के लिए मशहूर उस बहादुर और साहसी व्यक्ति ने वह लड़ाई जीत ली। हे राजा! वह यम और वरुण की तरह युद्ध में अजेय था।

पाण्डवीं समरे सेनां संममर्द सकुञ्जरः यथा वनगजो राजन्मृद्नंश्चरति पद्मिनीम्

O king! In that battle, he began to crush the Pāṇḍava soldiers with his elephant, like a wild elephant destroying the stalks of lotuses.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में वह अपने हाथी से पाण्डव सैनिकों को उसी प्रकार कुचलने लगा, जैसे कोई जंगली हाथी कमल के डंठलों को नष्ट कर देता है।

मद्रेश्वरस्तु समरे यमाभ्यां सह संगतः स्वस्रीयौ छादयां चक्रे शरौघैः पाण्डुनन्दनौ

In that battle, the lord of Madra fought with the twins, the sons of his sister. He enveloped the sons of Pāṇḍu with a cloud of arrows.

उस युद्ध में मद्र के स्वामी ने अपनी बहन के पुत्र जुड़वा बच्चों से युद्ध किया। उन्होंने बाणों के बादल से पाण्डु के पुत्रों को आच्छादित कर दिया।

सहदेवस्तु समरे मातुलं वीक्ष्य संगतम् अवारयच्छरौघेण मेघो यद्वद्दिवाकरम्

Finding himself engaged in battle with his maternal uncle, Sahadeva repulsed him with a shower of arrows, like clouds shrouding the sun.

सहदेव ने स्वयं को अपने मामा के साथ युद्ध में उलझा हुआ पाकर बाणों की वर्षा से उसे इस प्रकार खदेड़ दिया, जैसे बादल सूर्य को ढक लेते हैं।

छाद्यमानः शरौघेण हृष्टरूपतरोऽभवत् तयोश्चाप्यभवत्प्रीतिरतुला मातृकारणात्

Covered by that shower of arrows, he seemed to be happy. On account of their mother, the twins were also extremely delighted.

बाणों की उस वर्षा से आच्छादित होकर वह प्रसन्न प्रतीत हो रहा था। अपनी माँ की वजह से जुड़वाँ बच्चे भी बेहद खुश थे।

ततः प्रहस्य समरे नकुलस्य महारथः अश्वान्वै चतुरो राजंश्चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैः प्रेषयामास समरे यमस्य सदनं प्रति

O king! In that battle, smilingly, the mahāratha used four supreme arrows to despatch Nākula's four horses to Yāma's abode.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में, मुस्कुराते हुए, महारथ ने नकुल के चार घोड़ों को यम के निवास पर भेजने के लिए चार सर्वोच्च बाणों का उपयोग किया।

हताश्वात्तु रथात्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य महारथः आरुरोह ततो यानं भ्रातुरेव यशस्विनः

With the horses slain, the mahāratha quickly descended from his chariot and ascended onto his illustrious brother's vehicle.

घोड़ों के मारे जाने के बाद, महारथ तुरंत अपने रथ से उतरा और अपने प्रसिद्ध भाई के वाहन पर चढ़ गया।

एकस्थौ तु रणे शूरौ दृढे विक्षिप्य कार्मुके मद्रराजरथं क्रुद्धौ छादयामासतुः क्षणात्

In that battle, the brave ones stretched their bows while stationed on the same chariot. In a short while, they angrily covered the chariot of the king of Madra with arrows.

उस युद्ध में वीरों ने एक ही रथ पर खड़े होकर धनुष तान रखा था। थोड़ी ही देर में उन्होंने क्रोधपूर्वक मद्रराजा के रथ को बाणों से ढक दिया।

स च्छाद्यमानो बहुभिः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः स्वस्रीयाभ्यां नरव्याघ्रो नाकम्पत यथाचलः प्रहसन्निव तां चापि शरवृष्टिं जघान ह

He was shrouded with many straight-tufted arrows released by his sister's sons. But the tiger among men did not waver and was like a mountain. As if laughing, he destroyed that shower of arrows.

वह अपनी बहन के बेटों द्वारा छोड़े गए कई सीधे-नुकीले तीरों से घिरा हुआ था। लेकिन मनुष्यों के बीच का बाघ डगमगाया नहीं और पहाड़ की तरह खड़ा हो गया। उन्होंने हँसते हुए मानो बाणों की उस वर्षा को नष्ट कर दिया।

सहदेवस्ततः क्रुद्धः शरमुद्यम्य वीर्यवान् मद्रराजमभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रेषयामास भारत

Sahadeva became angry. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The valiant one picked up an arrow and released it in the direction of the king of Madra.

सहदेव क्रोधित हो गये। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वीर ने एक तीर उठाया और उसे मद्र के राजा की दिशा में छोड़ा।

स शरः प्रेषितस्तेन गरुत्मानिव वेगवान् मद्रराजं विनिर्भिद्य निपपात महीतले

That arrow released by him was as forceful as Gāruḍa. It pierced the king of Madra and fell down on the ground.

उनके द्वारा छोड़ा गया वह बाण गरुड़ के समान ही शक्तिशाली था। वह मद्र देश के राजा को बींधकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो रथोपस्थे महारथः निषसाद महाराज कश्मलं च जगाम ह

Having been severely wounded and pained, the mahāratha sat down on the floor of his chariot. O great king! He lost his consciousness.

गंभीर रूप से घायल और पीड़ाग्रस्त होकर, महारथी अपने रथ के फर्श पर बैठ गया। हे महान राजा! उसे होश नहीं रहा।

तं विसंज्ञं निपतितं सूतः संप्रेक्ष्य संयुगे अपोवाह रथेनाजौ यमाभ्यामभिपीडितम्

On seeing that he had fallen down and had lost his senses in that encounter and had been oppressed by the twins, his charioteer drove his chariot away.

यह देखकर कि वह गिर गया था और उस मुठभेड़ में अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठा था और जुड़वाँ बच्चों द्वारा प्रताड़ित किया गया था, उसके सारथी ने उसका रथ चला दिया।

दृष्ट्वा मद्रेश्वररथं धार्तराष्ट्राः पराङ्मुखम् सर्वे विमनसो भूत्वा नेदमस्तीत्यचिन्तयन्

On seeing that the chariot of the lord of Madra had retreated, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra lost heart. All of them were distressed and thought that he was no longer alive.

यह देखकर कि मद्रराज का रथ पीछे हट गया है, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र निराश हो गये। वे सभी व्यथित थे और सोचते थे कि वह अब जीवित नहीं है।

निर्जित्य मातुलं संख्ये माद्रीपुत्रौ महारथौ दध्मतुर्मुदितौ शङ्खौ सिंहनादं विनेदतुः

Having vanquished their maternal uncle in battle, Mādrī's mahāratha sons were delighted. They blew their conch shells and roared like lions.

युद्ध में अपने मामा को परास्त करके माद्री के महारथी पुत्र प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने शंख बजाये और सिंहों की भाँति गर्जना की।

अभिदुद्रुवतुर्हृष्टौ तव सैन्यं विशां पते यथा दैत्यचमूं राजन्निन्द्रोपेन्द्राविवामरौ

O lord of the earth! O king! Filled with joy, they attacked your soldiers, like the immortal Indra and Upendrā attacking the army of the daitya-s.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे राजा! वे प्रसन्नता से भरकर आपके सैनिकों पर उसी प्रकार टूट पड़े, जैसे अमर इन्द्र और उपेन्द्र दैत्यों की सेना पर आक्रमण करते हैं।
