संजय उवाच ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा स्वां सेनां समचोदयत् प्रतिव्यूहन्ननीकानि भीष्मस्य भरतर्षभ

Sañjaya said: O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Then King Yudhiṣṭhira arranged his soldiers in a counter-formation against Bhīṣma's and said,

संजय ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के बैल! तब राजा युधिष्ठिर ने भीष्म के विरूद्ध अपने सैनिकों को संगठित किया और कहा,

यथोद्दिष्टान्यनीकानि प्रत्यव्यूहन्त पाण्डवाः स्वर्गं परमभीप्सन्तः सुयुद्धेन कुरूद्वहाः

"O extenders of the Kuru lineage! The Pāṇḍava-s are arrayed in a counter-formation, in accordance with the injunctions. Desiring to attain supreme heaven, fight well.

"हे कुरु वंश के विस्तारकों! पांडव-आज्ञा के अनुसार, एक प्रति-संरचना में पंक्तिबद्ध हैं। सर्वोच्च स्वर्ग प्राप्त करने की इच्छा रखते हुए, अच्छी तरह से लड़ो।

मध्ये शिखण्डिनोऽनीकं रक्षितं सव्यसाचिना धृष्टद्युम्नस्य च स्वयं भीमेन परिपालितम्

Protected by Savyasachi, Śikhaṇḍī stood in the middle of the army. Protected by Bhīmā, Dhṛṣṭadyumna was in the front.

सव्यसाची द्वारा संरक्षित शिखंडी सेना के मध्य में खड़ा था। भीम द्वारा संरक्षित, धृष्टद्युम्न सबसे आगे था।

अनीकं दक्षिणं राजन्युयुधानेन पालितम् श्रीमता सात्वताग्र्येण शक्रेणेव धनुष्मता

O king! The southern segment was protected by the handsome Yuyudhāna, foremost archer among the Sātvata-s and Śākra's equal.

हे राजा! दक्षिणी खंड सुंदर युयुधान द्वारा संरक्षित था, जो सात्वत और शक्र के समकक्षों में अग्रणी धनुर्धर था।

महेन्द्रयानप्रतिमं रथं तु; सोपस्करं हाटकरत्नचित्रम् युधिष्ठिरः काञ्चनभाण्डयोक्त्रं; समास्थितो नागकुलस्य मध्ये

Yudhiṣṭhira was on a chariot that was like the great Indra's vehicle. It bore an excellent standard with gold and jewels and had a golden harness. He was stationed in the midst of his array of elephants.

युधिष्ठिर एक रथ पर सवार थे जो महान इंद्र के वाहन जैसा था। इसमें सोने और जवाहरातों का उत्कृष्ट मानक था और इसमें सोने का हार्नेस था। वह अपने हाथियों के समूह के बीच में तैनात था।

समुच्छ्रितं दान्तशलाकमस्य; सुपाण्डुरं छत्रमतीव भाति प्रदक्षिणं चैनमुपाचरन्ति; महर्षयः संस्तुतिभिर्नरेन्द्रम्

An extremely white and beautiful umbrella, with a handle made of tusks, was held aloft his head. Maharṣi-s circumambulated him and sung his praises.

उनके सिर पर एक बेहद सफेद और खूबसूरत छाता था, जिसका हैंडल दांतों से बना था। महर्षियों ने उनकी परिक्रमा की और उनकी स्तुति गाई।

पुरोहिताः शत्रुवधं वदन्तो; महर्षिवृद्धाः श्रुतवन्त एव जप्यैश्च मन्त्रैश्च तथौषधीभिः; समन्ततः स्वस्त्ययनं प्रचक्रुः

Priests, maharṣi-s and aged ones chanted his praises so that his enemies would be destroyed. They used meditation, mantra-s and herbs and pronounced words of benediction.

पुजारियों, महर्षियों और वृद्धों ने उसकी स्तुति की ताकि उसके शत्रु नष्ट हो जाएँ। उन्होंने ध्यान, मंत्र और जड़ी-बूटियों का इस्तेमाल किया और आशीर्वाद के शब्दों का उच्चारण किया।

ततः स वस्त्राणि तथैव गाश्च; फलानि पुष्पाणि तथैव निष्कान् कुरूत्तमो ब्राह्मणसान्महात्मा; कुर्वन्ययौ शक्र इवामरेभ्यः

The supreme among Kuru-s gave the great-souled brāhmana-s garments, cows, fruits, flowers and gold. He advanced like Śākra of the immortals.

कौरवों में सर्वोच्च ने महान आत्मा वाले ब्राह्मण को वस्त्र, गायें, फल, फूल और सोना दिया। वह अमरों के शक्र की तरह आगे बढ़े।

सहस्रसूर्यः शतकिङ्किणीकः; परार्ध्यजाम्बूनदहेमचित्रः रथोऽर्जुनस्याग्निरिवार्चिमाली; विभ्राजते श्वेतहयः सुचक्रः

Arjuna's chariot possessed one hundred bells. It was embellished with the best of gold and was as resplendent as the fire, blazing like a thousand suns. It was yoked to white steeds and possessed excellent wheels.

अर्जुन के रथ में एक सौ घंटियाँ थीं। वह सर्वोत्तम सोने से अलंकृत था और अग्नि के समान देदीप्यमान तथा हजारों सूर्यों के समान चमक रहा था। इसमें सफेद घोड़े जुते हुए थे और इसमें बेहतरीन पहिए लगे हुए थे।

तमास्थितः केशवसंगृहीतं; कपिध्वजं गाण्डिवबाणहस्तः धनुर्धरो यस्य समः पृथिव्यां; न विद्यते नो भविता वा कदाचित्

It had an ape on its banner. It was driven by Keśava and he was stationed on it, with the Gāṇḍīva and arrows in his hands. There was no archer who was equal to him on earth. Nor will there ever be such a one.

इसके बैनर पर एक वानर था। इसे केशव चला रहे थे और वह हाथों में गाण्डीव और तीर लेकर इस पर तैनात थे। पृथ्वी पर उसके समान कोई धनुर्धर नहीं था। न ही कभी ऐसा कोई होगा.

उद्वर्तयिष्यंस्तव पुत्रसेना;मतीव रौद्रं स बिभर्ति रूपम् अनायुधो यः सुभुजो भुजाभ्यां; नराश्वनागान्युधि भस्म कुर्यात्

Bhīmasena assumes a terrible form for the destruction of your sons. Without any weapons and with his bare hands, in a battle, he can reduce to ashes men, horses and elephants.

भीमसेन आपके पुत्रों के विनाश के लिए भयानक रूप धारण करते हैं। बिना किसी हथियार के और अपने नंगे हाथों से, वह युद्ध में मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों को भस्म कर सकता है।

स भीमसेनः सहितो यमाभ्यां; वृकोदरो वीररथस्य गोप्ता तं प्रेक्ष्य मत्तर्षभसिंहखेलं; लोके महेन्द्रप्रतिमानकल्पम्

The twins were with Vṛkodara and they protected the brave charioteers. In this world, he is like the great Indra himself. He was like an angry lion that was playing. Vṛkodara was as insolent as a king of elephants.

जुड़वाँ बच्चे वृकोदर के साथ थे और उन्होंने बहादुर सारथियों की रक्षा की। इस संसार में वह स्वयं महान इंद्र के समान हैं। वह क्रोधित सिंह के समान था जो खेल रहा था। वृकोदर हाथियों के राजा के समान ढीठ था।

समीक्ष्य सेनाग्रगतं दुरासदं; प्रविव्यथुः पङ्कगता इवोष्ट्राः वृकोदरं वारणराजदर्पं; योधास्त्वदीया भयविग्नसत्त्वाः

On seeing him in the vanguard of the army, the spirit of your soldiers was overcome by fear and anxiety and they trembled, like elephants caught in the mud.

उन्हें सेना के अग्रभाग में देखकर आपके सैनिकों की आत्मा भय और चिन्ता से अभिभूत हो गयी और वे कीचड़ में फँसे हुए हाथियों की भाँति काँपने लगे।

अनीकमध्ये तिष्ठन्तं राजपुत्रं दुरासदम् अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठं गुडाकेशं जनार्दनः

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! Janārdana then spoke to Gudākeśa, the invincible prince who was stationed in the midst of the army.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! तब जनार्दन ने अजेय राजकुमार गुडाकेश से बात की, जो सेना के बीच में तैनात था।

वासुदेव उवाच य एष गोप्ता प्रतपन्बलस्थो; यो नः सेनां सिंह इवेक्षते च स एष भीष्मः कुरुवंशकेतु;र्येनाहृतास्त्रिंशतो वाजिमेधाः

Vāsudeva said: Bhīṣma will attack our soldiers like a lion. He will protect with his power and strength. He is the flag of the Kuru lineage. That performer of three hundred horse sacrifices is there.

वासुदेव ने कहा: भीष्म हमारे सैनिकों पर शेर की तरह हमला करेंगे। वह अपनी शक्ति और शक्ति से रक्षा करेगा. वह कुरु वंश का ध्वज है। वह तीन सौ अश्वमेघ यज्ञ कराने वाला है।

एतान्यनीकानि महानुभावं; गूहन्ति मेघा इव घर्मरश्मिम् एतानि हत्वा पुरुषप्रवीर; काङ्क्षस्व युद्धं भरतर्षभेण

Other soldiers surround the illustrious one, like clouds enveloping the one with the virtuous rays. O foremost among brave ones! Slay those troops, wishing to fight with the bull among the Bhārata lineage."

जैसे मेघ पुण्य किरणों से घिरे हुए हैं, वैसे ही अन्य सैनिक उस तेजस्वी को घेरे रहते हैं। हे शूरवीरों में अग्रगण्य! भरत वंश के बीच बैल से युद्ध करने की इच्छा रखने वाले उन सैनिकों को मार डालो।"

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच केषां प्रहृष्टास्तत्राग्रे योधा युध्यन्ति संजय उदग्रमनसः केऽत्र के वा दीना विचेतसः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: O Sañjaya! Which warriors from which side were delighted and advanced to fight first? Who were confident in their minds and who were dejected and dispirited?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: हे संजय! किस पक्ष के कौन से योद्धा प्रसन्न होकर पहले युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़े? किसके मन में आत्मविश्वास था और कौन हताश और निराश था?

के पूर्वं प्राहरंस्तत्र युद्धे हृदयकम्पने मामकाः पाण्डवानां वा तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

Who struck first in the battle that makes the heart tremble? Was it from my side or that of the Pāṇḍava-s?

हृदय कांपने वाले युद्ध में सबसे पहले किसने प्रहार किया? क्या यह मेरी ओर से था या पांडवों की ओर से?

कस्य सेनासमुदये गन्धमाल्यसमुद्भवः वाचः प्रदक्षिणाश्चैव योधानामभिगर्जताम्

O Sañjaya! Tell me all this. Amidst whose soldiers were garlands and pastes fragrant? Whose warriors roared and uttered auspicious words?"

हे संजय! ये सब मुझे बताओ. किसके सैनिकों के बीच मालाएँ और लेप सुगन्धित थे? किसके योद्धाओं ने गर्जना की और शुभ वचन कहे?”

संजय उवाच उभयोः सेनयोस्तत्र योधा जहृषिरे मुदा स्रग्धूपपानगन्धानामुभयत्र समुद्भवः

Sañjaya said: "At that time, the soldiers from both sides were cheerful. The garlands and pastes of both sides were equally fragrant.

संजय ने कहा: "उस समय, दोनों पक्षों के सैनिक प्रसन्न थे। दोनों पक्षों की मालाएं और लेप समान रूप से सुगंधित थे।"

संहतानामनीकानां व्यूढानां भरतर्षभ संसर्पतामुदीर्णानां विमर्दः सुमहानभूत्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The soldiers were arrayed in battle formation and when they met each other, there was an extremely terrible encounter.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! सैनिक युद्ध की शृंखला में पंक्तिबद्ध थे और जब वे एक-दूसरे से मिले तो अत्यंत भयानक मुठभेड़ हुई।

वादित्रशब्दस्तुमुलः शङ्खभेरीविमिश्रितः कुञ्जराणां च नदतां सैन्यानां च प्रहृष्यताम्

There was the tumultuous sound of musical instruments, intermingled with that of conch shells and drums. There was the trumpeting of elephants and the soldiers were filled with joy."

वहां शंख और ढोल के साथ संगीत वाद्ययंत्रों की कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि गूंज रही थी। हाथियों की चिंघाड़ने की आवाज आ रही थी और सैनिक खुशी से भर गये थे।”
