संजय उवाच राजञ्शतसहस्राणि तत्र तत्र तदा तदा निर्मर्यादं प्रयुद्धानि तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत

Sañjaya said: O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I will now tell you about the hundreds and thousands of bouts that took place there, without showing any considerations of respect.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अब मैं आपको उन सैकड़ों और हजारों मुकाबलों के बारे में बताऊंगा जो सम्मान का कोई विचार किए बिना वहां हुए थे।

न पुत्रः पितरं जज्ञे न पिता पुत्रमौरसम् न भ्राता भ्रातरं तत्र स्वस्रीयं न च मातुलः

The son did not recognize the father, or the father the son born from his own loins. A brother did not recognize a brother there, nor a sister's son his maternal uncle.

न पुत्र ने पिता को पहचाना, न पिता ने अपनी ही कोख से जन्मे पुत्र को। वहां किसी भाई ने भाई को नहीं पहचाना, न ही बहन के बेटे ने अपने मामा को.

मातुलं न च स्वस्रीयो न सखायं सखा तथा आविष्टा इव युध्यन्ते पाण्डवाः कुरुभिः सह

The maternal uncle did not recognize his sister's son, nor did a friend recognize his friend there. The Pāṇḍava-s and the Kuru-s fought as if they were possessed.

वहां न तो मामा ने अपनी बहन के बेटे को पहचाना और न ही किसी दोस्त ने अपने दोस्त को पहचाना. पाण्डव और कुरु ऐसे लड़े मानो उन पर भूत आ गया हो।

रथानीकं नरव्याघ्राः केचिदभ्यपतन्रथैः अभज्यन्त युगैरेव युगानि भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Some tigers among men used chariots to bring down and shatter chariots, destroying their yokes.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! मनुष्यों में से कुछ बाघों ने रथों को नीचे गिराने और चकनाचूर करने के लिए, उनके जूतों को नष्ट करने के लिए रथों का उपयोग किया।

रथेषाश्च रथेषाभिः कूबरा रथकूबरैः संहताः संहतैः केचित्परस्परजिघांसवः

Axles of chariots clashed against axles of chariots. Seats clashed against seats of chariots. Some united against others who were united. They all wished to rob each other of their lives.

रथों की धुरियाँ रथों की धुरों से टकरा गईं। रथों की सीटों से सीटों की भिड़ंत हो गई. कुछ अन्य लोगों के विरुद्ध एकजुट हो गये जो एकजुट थे। वे सभी एक-दूसरे का जीवन लूटना चाहते थे।

न शेकुश्चलितुं केचित्संनिपत्य रथा रथैः प्रभिन्नास्तु महाकायाः संनिपत्य गजा गजैः

Some chariots could not move, because they were obstructed by other chariots. Gigantic elephants had their temples shattered and fell down on other elephants.

कुछ रथ आगे नहीं बढ़ सके, क्योंकि वे अन्य रथों द्वारा बाधित थे। विशाल हाथियों के मंदिर टूट गये और वे अन्य हाथियों पर गिर पड़े।

बहुधादारयन्क्रुद्धा विषाणैरितरेतरम् सतोमरपताकैश्च वारणाः परवारणैः

They were angry and used their tusks to attack each other in many places. Elephants adorned with decorations and standards attacked the elephants of the enemy.

वे क्रोधित थे और कई स्थानों पर एक-दूसरे पर हमला करने के लिए अपने दांतों का इस्तेमाल करते थे। अलंकारों और ध्वजाओं से सुसज्जित हाथियों ने शत्रु के हाथियों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

अभिसृत्य महाराज वेगवद्भिर्महागजैः दन्तैरभिहतास्तत्र चुक्रुशुः परमातुराः

O great king! These were giant elephants that encountered other powerful ones.Injured by the tusks, they were greatly distressed and roared. But these were disciplined because of their training.

हे महान राजा! ये विशाल हाथी थे जिनका सामना अन्य शक्तिशाली हाथियों से हुआ। दाँतों से घायल होकर, वे बहुत व्यथित हुए और दहाड़ने लगे। लेकिन ये अपने प्रशिक्षण के कारण अनुशासित थे।

अभिनीताश्च शिक्षाभिस्तोत्त्राङ्कुशसमाहताः सुप्रभिन्नाः प्रभिन्नानां संमुखाभिमुखा ययुः

Urged by pikes and goads, elephants that were in musth attacked others that were in musth.

बाइकों और गुलदारों के उकसाने पर, कामातुर हाथियों ने अन्य कामातुर हाथियों पर हमला कर दिया।

प्रभिन्नैरपि संसक्ताः केचित्तत्र महागजाः क्रौञ्चवन्निनदं मुक्त्वा प्राद्रवन्त ततस्ततः

Attacked by those that were in musth, giant elephants ran away everywhere, shrieking like cranes.

बाहुबलियों द्वारा आक्रमण किये जाने पर विशाल हाथी सारस की भाँति चिंघाड़ते हुए जहाँ-तहाँ भाग गये।

सम्यक्प्रणीता नागाश्च प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः ऋष्टितोमरनाराचैर्निर्विद्धा वरवारणाः

There were trained elephants, with shattered temples and mouths. These supreme elephants were wounded by swords, lances and iron arrows.

वहां प्रशिक्षित हाथी थे, जिनकी कनपटी और मुंह टूटे हुए थे। ये श्रेष्ठ हाथी तलवारों, भालों तथा लोहे के बाणों से घायल हो गये।

विनेदुर्भिन्नमर्माणो निपेतुश्च गतासवः प्राद्रवन्त दिशः केचिन्नदन्तो भैरवान्रवान्

Pierced in their innards, they fell down and lost their lives. Others uttered terrible roars and ran away in different directions.

उनके अंतःस्थल में छेद हो जाने से वे गिर पड़े और उनके प्राण चले गए। अन्य लोगों ने भयानक दहाड़ें लगाईं और अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गए।

गजानां पादरक्षास्तु व्यूढोरस्काः प्रहारिणः ऋष्टिभिश्च धनुर्भिश्च विमलैश्च परश्वधैः

The foot soldiers who guarded the elephants were armed and possessed broad chests. They had swords, bows, unblemished battleaxes,

हाथियों की रक्षा करने वाले पैदल सैनिक हथियारों से लैस होते थे और उनकी छाती चौड़ी होती थी। उनके पास तलवारें, धनुष, बेदाग फरसे,

गदाभिर्मुसलैश्चैव भिण्डिपालैः सतोमरैः आयसैः परिघैश्चैव निस्त्रिंशैर्विमलैः शितैः

clubs, maces, catapults, lances, iron bludgeons and sharp and polished cutlasses

गदाएँ, गदाएँ, गुलेल, भाले, लोहे के डंडे और नुकीले और पॉलिश किए हुए कटलैस

प्रगृहीतैः सुसंरब्धा धावमानास्ततस्ततः व्यदृश्यन्त महाराज परस्परजिघांसवः

O great king! Grasping these, they could be seen to run in every direction, desirous of taking each other's lives.

हे महान राजा! इन्हें पकड़कर वे एक-दूसरे की जान लेने की इच्छा से हर दिशा में दौड़ते देखे जा सकते थे।

राजमानाश्च निस्त्रिंशाः संसिक्ता नरशोणितैः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त शूराणामन्योन्यमभिधावताम्

The resplendent cutlasses were steeped in the blood of brave men and seemed to shine brilliantly.

देदीप्यमान कटलैस बहादुर पुरुषों के खून में डूबे हुए थे और शानदार ढंग से चमक रहे थे।

अवक्षिप्तावधूतानामसीनां वीरबाहुभिः संजज्ञे तुमुलः शब्दः पततां परमर्मसु

The swords were whirled by the arms of brave ones and made a whizzing sound. As they descended on the inner organs of enemies, they generated a tremendous sound.

वीरों की भुजाओं से घूमती हुई तलवारें घर्र-ध्वनि करती थीं। जैसे ही वे शत्रुओं के आंतरिक अंगों पर उतरे, उन्होंने एक जबरदस्त ध्वनि उत्पन्न की।

गदामुसलरुग्णानां भिन्नानां च वरासिभिः दन्तिदन्तावभिन्नानां मृदितानां च दन्तिभिः

They were shattered by clubs and maces and by supreme swords. They were gored by the tusks of the tusked ones and wounded by the tusks.

वे लाठों, गदाओं तथा सर्वोच्च तलवारों से चूर-चूर हो गये। उन्हें दंतैलों के दाँतों ने घायल कर दिया और दाँतों ने उन्हें घायल कर दिया।

तत्र तत्र नरौघाणां क्रोशतामितरेतरम् शुश्रुवुर्दारुणा वाचः प्रेतानामिव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In every place, large numbers of men were oppressed and let out sounds of lamentation, like those of men who are about to die.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हर जगह, बड़ी संख्या में लोगों पर अत्याचार किया गया और उन्होंने मरने वाले लोगों की तरह विलाप की आवाजें निकालीं।

हयैरपि हयारोहाश्चामरापीडधारिभिः हंसैरिव महावेगैरन्योन्यमभिदुद्रुवुः

Those who were on extremely swift horses, with tails like those of swans, attacked others on horses.

जो अत्यंत तेज़ घोड़ों पर सवार थे, जिनकी पूंछ हंसों जैसी थी, उन्होंने अन्य घोड़ों पर हमला कर दिया।

तैर्विमुक्ता महाप्रासा जाम्बूनदविभूषणाः आशुगा विमलास्तीक्ष्णाः संपेतुर्भुजगोपमाः

They hurled giant spears that were decorated with gold and were swift, sharp and polished. They descended like snakes.

उन्होंने विशाल भाले फेंके जो सोने से सजे हुए थे और तेज़, तेज़ और पॉलिशदार थे। वे साँप की भाँति उतरे।

अश्वैरग्र्यजवैः केचिदाप्लुत्य महतो रथान् शिरांस्याददिरे वीरा रथिनामश्वसादिनः

There were some great rāṭha-s on swift horses. They sliced off the heads of other brave rāṭha-s who were on horses.

वहाँ तेज़ घोड़ों पर सवार कुछ महान रथ थे। उन्होंने घोड़ों पर सवार अन्य वीर रथों के सिर काट दिये।

बहूनपि हयारोहान्भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः रथी जघान संप्राप्य बाणगोचरमागतान्

A rāṭha on a horse approached many who were within the shooting distance of an arrow and used straight-tufted iron arrows to kill them.

घोड़े पर सवार एक रथ कई लोगों के पास आया जो तीर चलाने की दूरी के भीतर थे और उन्हें मारने के लिए सीधे लोहे के तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

नगमेघप्रतीकाशाश्चाक्षिप्य तुरगान्गजाः पादैरेवावमृद्नन्त मत्ताः कनकभूषणाः

There were crazy elephants that were like mountains or clouds and were adorned with gold. They brought down horses and crushed them with their feet.

वहाँ पागल हाथी थे जो पहाड़ों या बादलों के समान थे और सोने से सजे हुए थे। उन्होंने घोड़ों को नीचे गिरा दिया और उन्हें अपने पैरों से कुचल डाला।

पाट्यमानेषु कुम्भेषु पार्श्वेष्वपि च वारणाः प्रासैर्विनिहताः केचिद्विनेदुः परमातुराः

The elephants were struck on their humps and their flanks. They were pierced by spikes and some of them roared in agony.

हाथियों के कूबड़ और पार्श्व पर प्रहार किया गया। उन्हें कीलों से छेदा गया और उनमें से कुछ पीड़ा से दहाड़ने लगे।

साश्वारोहान्हयान्केचिदुन्मथ्य वरवारणाः सहसा चिक्षिपुस्तत्र संकुले भैरवे सति

There was terrible confusion there. Many supreme elephants suddenly threw down horses and their riders and crushed them.

वहां भयंकर अफरा-तफरी मच गई. अनेक श्रेष्ठ हाथियों ने अचानक घोड़ों और उनके सवारों को नीचे गिरा दिया और कुचल डाला।

साश्वारोहान्विषाणाग्रैरुत्क्षिप्य तुरगान्द्विपाः रथौघानवमृद्नन्तः सध्वजान्परिचक्रमुः

Using the tips of their tusks, elephants flung down horses and their riders. They crushed chariots and their standards and roamed around.

अपने दाँतों की नोकों का उपयोग करके, हाथियों ने घोड़ों और उनके सवारों को नीचे गिरा दिया। उन्होंने रथों और उनके ध्वजों को कुचल डाला और इधर-उधर घूमते रहे।

पुंस्त्वादभिमदत्वाच्च केचिदत्र महागजाः साश्वारोहान्हयाञ्जघ्नुः करैः सचरणैस्तथा

There were some giant male elephants, extremely energetic because of the musth strewing down their temples. They slew horses and riders with their trunks and their feet.

वहाँ कुछ विशाल नर हाथी थे, जो अपने कनपटी पर मूंछ बिखेरने के कारण अत्यधिक ऊर्जावान थे। उन्होंने घोड़ों और सवारों को अपनी सूंडों और पैरों से मार डाला।

केचिदाक्षिप्य करिणः साश्वानपि रथान्करैः विकर्षन्तो दिशः सर्वाः समीयुः सर्वशब्दगाः

Some horses and chariots were flung away by the elephants. All of them were thrown away in all the directions, with a loud noise.

कुछ घोड़ों और रथों को हाथियों ने उड़ा दिया। वे सब बड़े जोर की आवाज के साथ चारों दिशाओं में फेंक दिये गये।

आशुगा विमलास्तीक्ष्णाः संपेतुर्भुजगोपमाः नराश्वकायान्निर्भिद्य लौहानि कवचानि च

Swift, polished and sharp arrows were like serpents. They descended on the bodies of men and riders and pierced their iron armour.

तेज़, पॉलिशदार और तीखे तीर साँपों की तरह थे। वे मनुष्यों और सवारों के शरीरों पर उतरे और उनके लोहे के कवच को छेद दिया।

निपेतुर्विमलाः शक्त्यो वीरबाहुभिरर्पिताः महोल्काप्रतिमा घोरास्तत्र तत्र विशां पते

Polished javelins were hurled by the arms of brave ones. O lord of the earth! They were terrible, like giant meteors, and descended.

शूरवीरों की भुजाओं से पॉलिश किये हुए भाले फेंके गये। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वे विशाल उल्काओं के समान भयानक थे, और नीचे उतरे।

द्वीपिचर्मावनद्धैश्च व्याघ्रचर्मशयैरपि विकोशैर्विमलैः खड्गैरभिजघ्नुः परान्रणे

Blazing swords were taken out from sheaths made out of the skins of tigers and leopards. Once unsheathed, these polished swords were used to kill the enemies in battle.

बाघों और तेंदुओं की खाल से बनी म्यानों से धधकती तलवारें निकाली गईं। एक बार म्यान खोलने के बाद, इन पॉलिश तलवारों का उपयोग युद्ध में दुश्मनों को मारने के लिए किया जाता था।

अभिप्लुतमभिक्रुद्धमेकपार्श्वावदारितम् विदर्शयन्तः संपेतुः खड्गचर्मपरश्वधैः

There were soldiers who had their sides sliced open. Despite this, they angrily attacked with swords, shields and battleaxes.

ऐसे सैनिक थे जिनकी बाजू कटी हुई थी। इसके बावजूद, उन्होंने गुस्से में तलवारों, ढालों और फरसों से हमला कर दिया।

शक्तिभिर्दारिताः केचित्संछिन्नाश्च परश्वधैः हस्तिभिर्मृदिताः केचित्क्षुण्णाश्चान्ये तुरंगमैः

Some were pierced by javelins. Others were cut down by battleaxes. Some were destroyed by elephants. Others were oppressed by horses.

कुछ को भाले से छेदा गया। दूसरों को युद्ध की कुल्हाड़ियों से काट दिया गया। कुछ को हाथियों ने नष्ट कर दिया। दूसरों पर घोड़ों द्वारा अत्याचार किया जाता था।

रथनेमिनिकृत्ताश्च निकृत्ता निशितैः शरैः विक्रोशन्ति नरा राजंस्तत्र तत्र स्म बान्धवान्

Some were crushed by the wheels of chariots. Others were brought down by sharp arrows. O king! Thus oppressed, the men loudly called for their relatives,

कुछ रथों के पहियों से कुचल गये। अन्य को तीखे बाणों द्वारा गिरा दिया गया। हे राजा! इस प्रकार उत्पीड़ित होकर, उन लोगों ने जोर-जोर से अपने रिश्तेदारों को बुलाया,

पुत्रानन्ये पितॄनन्ये भ्रातॄंश्च सह बान्धवैः मातुलान्भागिनेयांश्च परानपि च संयुगे

their sons, fathers, brothers and kin, their maternal uncles and nephews. In that field of battle, some others called for others.

उनके बेटे, पिता, भाई और रिश्तेदार, उनके मामा और भतीजे। युद्ध के उस मैदान में, कुछ अन्य लोगों ने दूसरों को बुलाया।

विकीर्णान्त्राः सुबहवो भग्नसक्थाश्च भारत बाहुभिः सुभुजाच्छिन्नैः पार्श्वेषु च विदारिताः क्रन्दन्तः समदृश्यन्त तृषिता जीवितेप्सवः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! A large number of combatants lost their weapons. Their thighs were broken and their hands and arms torn apart. Their sides were shattered. Some were still alive and could be seen to be screaming from thirst.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! बड़ी संख्या में लड़ाकों ने अपने हथियार खो दिये। उनकी जाँघें तोड़ दी गईं और हाथ-पैर टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिए गए। उनकी भुजाएँ बिखर गईं। कुछ अभी भी जीवित थे और उन्हें प्यास से चिल्लाते देखा जा सकता था।

तृष्णापरिगताः केचिदल्पसत्त्वा विशां पते भूमौ निपतिताः संख्ये जलमेव ययाचिरे

O lord of the earth! They had only a little bit of strength left and were overcome by thirst. They had fallen down on the ground in that battle and asked for water.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उनमें थोड़ी सी ताकत बची थी और वे प्यास से व्याकुल हो गये थे। वे उस युद्ध में भूमि पर गिर पड़े थे और पानी माँग रहे थे।

रुधिरौघपरिक्लिन्नाः क्लिश्यमानाश्च भारत व्यनिन्दन्भृशमात्मानं तव पुत्रांश्च संगतान्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Others were weak and were covered in blood. Assembled there, they censured themselves and your son.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अन्य लोग कमज़ोर थे और खून से लथपथ थे। वहाँ इकट्ठे होकर उन्होंने अपनी और आपके पुत्र की निन्दा की।

अपरे क्षत्रियाः शूराः कृतवैराः परस्परम् नैव शस्त्रं विमुञ्चन्ति नैव क्रन्दन्ति मारिष तर्जयन्ति च संहृष्टास्तत्र तत्र परस्परम्

O venerable one! But there were other brave kṣatriya-s. Having acted in enmity towards each other, they did not cast away their weapons. Nor did they lament.

हे आदरणीय! लेकिन अन्य बहादुर क्षत्रिय भी थे। एक-दूसरे के प्रति शत्रुता का भाव रखते हुए उन्होंने अपने हथियार नहीं त्यागे। न ही उन्होंने विलाप किया.

निर्दश्य दशनैश्चापि क्रोधात्स्वदशनच्छदान् भ्रुकुटीकुटिलैर्वक्त्रैः प्रेक्षन्ते च परस्परम्

They roared in delight towards each other. Lying there, they could be seen to bite their teeth with their own lips. Their bows were contracted and they glanced towards each other.

वे एक-दूसरे की ओर खुशी से दहाड़ने लगे। वहां लेटे-लेटे उन्हें अपने ही होठों से दांत काटते देखा जा सकता है। उनके धनुष सिकुड़ गए और उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा।

अपरे क्लिश्यमानास्तु व्रणार्ताः शरपीडिताः निष्कूजाः समपद्यन्त दृढसत्त्वा महाबलाः

There were others who suffered from wounds and had been oppressed by arrows. But even then, those extremely strong ones bore the pain silently and were firm in their hearts.

कुछ अन्य लोग भी थे जो घावों से पीड़ित थे और तीरों से पीड़ित थे। लेकिन फिर भी, उन बेहद ताकतवर लोगों ने दर्द को चुपचाप सहन किया और अपने दिलों में दृढ़ रहे।

अन्ये तु विरथाः शूरा रथमन्यस्य संयुगे प्रार्थयाना निपतिताः संक्षुण्णा वरवारणैः अशोभन्त महाराज पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः

There were other brave charioteers who had lost their chariots in battle. They had been thrown down and wounded by the supreme elephants. Having been brought down, they asked for the chariots of others. O great king! They were as beautiful as blossoming kiṃśuka trees.

ऐसे और भी वीर सारथी थे जो युद्ध में अपने रथ खो बैठे थे। उन्हें श्रेष्ठ हाथियों ने नीचे गिराकर घायल कर दिया था। नीचे उतारे जाने के बाद, उन्होंने दूसरों के रथ माँगे। हे महान राजा! वे खिले हुए किंशुका वृक्षों के समान सुंदर थे।

संबभूवुरनीकेषु बहवो भैरवस्वनाः वर्तमाने महाभीमे तस्मिन्वीरवरक्षये

Many terrible cries were heard in every division of the armies. The sister's son killed the maternal uncle and the maternal uncle killed the sister's son.

सेनाओं के प्रत्येक प्रभाग में अनेक भयानक चीखें सुनाई देने लगीं। बहन के बेटे ने मामा को और मामा ने बहन के बेटे को मार डाला.

अहनत्तु पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं रणे स्वस्रीयो मातुलं चापि स्वस्रीयं चापि मातुलः

It was an extremely terrible encounter that destroyed heroes. In that battle, the father killed the son and the son killed the father.

यह अत्यंत भयानक मुठभेड़ थी जिसने नायकों को नष्ट कर दिया। उस युद्ध में पिता ने पुत्र को और पुत्र ने पिता को मार डाला।

सखायं च सखा राजन्संबन्धी बान्धवं तथा एवं युयुधिरे तत्र कुरवः पाण्डवैः सह

O king! A friend killed a friend and a relative killed a relative. Thus was the battle between the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे राजा! एक दोस्त ने दोस्त को और एक रिश्तेदार ने अपने रिश्तेदार को मार डाला. इस प्रकार कुरु-वंश और पांडव-वंश के बीच युद्ध हुआ।

वर्तमाने भये तस्मिन्निर्मर्यादे महाहवे भीष्ममासाद्य पार्थानां वाहिनी समकम्पत

No mercy was shown in that fearful and terrible encounter. On encountering Bhīṣma, the army of the Pārtha-s trembled.

उस भयावह और भयानक मुठभेड़ में कोई दया नहीं दिखाई गई। भीष्म का सामना करते ही पार्थ की सेना कांप उठी।

केतुना पञ्चतारेण तालेन भरतर्षभ राजतेन महाबाहुरुच्छ्रितेन महारथे बभौ भीष्मस्तदा राजंश्चन्द्रमा इव मेरुणा

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The mighty-armed one's standard was adorned with five stars and a palm tree. It was made out of silver. O king! When ascended on his great chariot, Bhīṣma looked like the moon on Meru.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! महाबाहु का ध्वज पाँच सितारों और एक ताड़ के पेड़ से सुशोभित था। यह चाँदी से बना था। हे राजा! जब भीष्म अपने विशाल रथ पर चढ़े तो वे मेरु पर स्थित चंद्रमा के समान लग रहे थे।
