धृतराष्ट्र उवाच प्रतिज्ञाते तु भीष्मेण तस्मिन्युद्धे सुदारुणे क्रोधितो मम पुत्रेण दुःखितेन विशेषतः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: When Bhīṣma was especially angered and distressed because of my son and took that terrible vow in that battle,

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: जब भीष्म मेरे पुत्र के कारण विशेष रूप से क्रोधित और व्यथित थे और उन्होंने उस युद्ध में यह भयानक प्रतिज्ञा ली थी,

भीष्मः किमकरोत्तत्र पाण्डवेयेषु संजय पितामहे वा पाञ्चालास्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

what did Bhīṣma do when he encountered the Pāṇḍaveya-s. O Sañjaya! Tell me what the Pāñcāla-s did to the grandfather.

जब भीष्म का पाण्डवियों से सामना हुआ तो उन्होंने क्या किया? हे संजय! मुझे बताओ कि पंचालों ने पितामह के साथ क्या किया?

संजय उवाच गतपूर्वाह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्नहनि भारत जयं प्राप्तेषु हृष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु

Sañjaya replied: "O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the forenoon of that day had passed and when the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s were delighted at having accomplished victory,

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: "हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब उस दिन का पूर्वाह्न बीत चुका था और जब महान आत्मा वाले पांडव विजय प्राप्त करने पर प्रसन्न थे,

सर्वधर्मविशेषज्ञः पिता देवव्रतस्तव अभ्ययाज्जवनैरश्वैः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् महत्या सेनया गुप्तस्तव पुत्रैश्च सर्वशः

your father, Devavrata, learned in all kinds of dharma, advanced on the swiftest of steeds towards the army of the Pāṇḍava-s. He was protected by a large army and by all your sons.

आपके पिता देवव्रत, सभी प्रकार के धर्मों में विद्वान, सबसे तेज़ घोड़ों पर सवार होकर पांडवों की सेना की ओर बढ़े। वह एक बड़ी सेना और आपके सभी पुत्रों द्वारा संरक्षित था।

प्रावर्तत ततो युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् अस्माकं पाण्डवैः सार्धमनयात्तव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! A tumultuous battle ensued between us and the Pāṇḍava-s, because you did not follow dharma. It made the body hair stand up.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! क्योंकि आपने धर्म का पालन नहीं किया, इसलिए हमारे और पांडवों के बीच घमासान युद्ध छिड़ गया। इससे शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।

धनुषां कूजतां तत्र तलानां चाभिहन्यताम् महान्समभवच्छब्दो गिरीणामिव दीर्यताम्

There was the twanging of bows there, as they struck against the palms. A tremendous sound arose and it was capable of splintering mountains.

वहाँ धनुषों की टंकार हो रही थी, जैसे वे हथेलियों से टकरा रहे थे। एक ज़बरदस्त आवाज़ उठी और वह पहाड़ों को टुकड़े-टुकड़े करने में सक्षम थी।

तिष्ठ स्थितोऽस्मि विद्ध्येनं निवर्तस्व स्थिरो भव स्थितोऽस्मि प्रहरस्वेति शब्दाः श्रूयन्त सर्वशः

"Wait", "I am stationed here", "Know this one", "Retreat", "Be steady", "I am steady here", "Strike"—these were the sounds that were heard everywhere.

"रुको", "मैं यहाँ तैनात हूँ", "इसे जानो", "पीछे हटो", "स्थिर रहो", "मैं यहाँ स्थिर हूँ", "मारो" - ये वो ध्वनियाँ थीं जो हर जगह सुनाई दे रही थीं।

काञ्चनेषु तनुत्रेषु किरीटेषु ध्वजेषु च शिलानामिव शैलेषु पतितानामभूत्स्वनः

Golden body-armour, crowns and standards fell down and it was like the sound of boulders descending on stony ground.

स्वर्ण कवच, मुकुट और ध्वज नीचे गिर गये और ऐसा लगा मानो पथरीली जमीन पर पत्थरों के गिरने की आवाज आ रही हो।

पतितान्युत्तमाङ्गानि बाहवश्च विभूषिताः व्यचेष्टन्त महीं प्राप्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

Hundreds and thousands of heads and ornamented arms fell down immobile on the ground.

सैकड़ों और हजारों सिर और अलंकृत भुजाएँ भूमि पर स्थिर होकर गिर पड़ीं।

हृतोत्तमाङ्गाः केचित्तु तथैवोद्यतकार्मुकाः प्रगृहीतायुधाश्चापि तस्थुः पुरुषसत्तमाः

With the heads sliced off, some supreme among men still stood, with their bows raised and holding weapons.

सिर कट जाने के बाद भी कुछ श्रेष्ठ पुरुष धनुष उठाये और हथियार लिये खड़े थे।

प्रावर्तत महावेगा नदी रुधिरवाहिनी मातङ्गाङ्गशिलारौद्रा मांसशोणितकर्दमा

An extremely swift river of blood began to flow. Its mud was terrible with flesh and blood and the bodies of elephants were like stones in it.

खून की अत्यंत तीव्र नदी बहने लगी। उसकी कीचड़ मांस और रक्त से भयानक थी और उसमें हाथियों के शरीर पत्थरों के समान थे।

वराश्वनरनागानां शरीरप्रभवा तदा परलोकार्णवमुखी गृध्रगोमायुमोदिनी

The bodies of excellent horses, men and elephants flowed in it then, as it flowed towards the world of the hereafter. It was delightful to vultures and jackals.

उत्कृष्ट घोड़ों, मनुष्यों और हाथियों के शरीर उसमें तब प्रवाहित होते थे, जैसे वह परलोक की ओर प्रवाहित होता था। यह गिद्धों और सियारों के लिए आनंददायक था।

न दृष्टं न श्रुतं चापि युद्धमेतादृशं नृप यथा तव सुतानां च पाण्डवानां च भारत

O king! A battle like this has not been seen earlier, nor heard of. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Such was the one between your sons and the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे राजा! ऐसी लड़ाई न पहले कभी देखी गई, न सुनी गई। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके पुत्रों और पांडवों के बीच ऐसी ही स्थिति थी।

नासीद्रथपथस्तत्र योधैर्युधि निपातितैः गजैश्च पतितैर्नीलैर्गिरिशृङ्गैरिवावृतम्

Because of the warriors who had been brought down in battle, chariots could not find a path there.

युद्ध में गिरे हुए योद्धाओं के कारण रथों को वहाँ मार्ग नहीं मिलता था।

विकीर्णैः कवचैश्चित्रैर्ध्वजैश्छत्रैश्च मारिष शुशुभे तद्रणस्थानं शरदीव नभस्तलम्

The bodies of fallen elephants were like blue summits of mountains. O venerable one! Strewn with colourful armour, standards and umbrellas, the field of battle was as beautiful as the autumn sky.

गिरे हुए हाथियों के शरीर पर्वतों के नीले शिखरों के समान थे। हे आदरणीय! रंग-बिरंगे कवचों, ध्वजाओं और छत्रों से सुसज्जित युद्ध का मैदान शरद ऋतु के आकाश के समान सुंदर था।

विनिर्भिन्नाः शरैः केचिदन्तपीडाविकर्षिणः अभीताः समरे शत्रूनभ्यधावन्त दंशिताः

Though they were oppressed and wounded by arrows, some armoured ones were seen to dāś towards the enemy in battle, without any fear. Many who fell down in the battle cried,

यद्यपि वे तीरों से प्रताड़ित और घायल थे, फिर भी कुछ बख्तरबंद लोगों को बिना किसी डर के युद्ध में दुश्मन की ओर बढ़ते देखा गया। युद्ध में मारे गये बहुत से लोग चिल्लाये,

तात भ्रातः सखे बन्धो वयस्य मम मातुल मा मां परित्यजेत्यन्ये चुक्रुशुः पतिता रणे

"O father! O brother! O friend! O relative! O companion! O maternal uncle! Do not abandon me."

"हे पिता! हे भाई! हे मित्र! हे रिश्तेदार! हे साथी! हे मामा! मुझे मत त्यागो।"

आधावाभ्येहि मा गच्छ किं भीतोऽसि क्व यास्यसि स्थितोऽहं समरे मा भैरिति चान्ये विचुक्रुशुः

There were others who exclaimed, "Come here. Why are you frightened? Where are you going? I am stationed in battle. Do not be afraid."

कुछ और लोग भी थे जिन्होंने चिल्लाकर कहा, "यहाँ आओ। तुम भयभीत क्यों हो? तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? मैं युद्ध में तैनात हूँ। डरो मत।"

तत्र भीष्मः शांतनवो नित्यं मण्डलकार्मुकः मुमोच बाणान्दीप्ताग्रानहीनाशीविषानिव

Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, was there, his bow always stretched in a circle. He released blazing arrows that were like the venom of virulent snakes.

शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म वहाँ थे, उनका धनुष हमेशा एक चक्र में फैला रहता था। उसने धधकते हुए तीर छोड़े जो विषैले साँपों के विष के समान थे।

शरैरेकायनीकुर्वन्दिशः सर्वा यतव्रतः जघान पाण्डवरथानादिश्यादिश्य भारत

Rigid in his vows, he released arrows in all the directions. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! He picked out the Pāṇḍava charioteers and killed them.

अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ होकर उसने सभी दिशाओं में बाण छोड़े। हे भरत वंश में बैल! उसने पांडव सारथियों को चुन-चुनकर मार डाला।

स नृत्यन्वै रथोपस्थे दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् अलातचक्रवद्राजंस्तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यते

With a dextrous hand, he seemed to be dancing around in the chariot. O king! He could be seen everywhere, like a circle of fire.

कुशल हाथ से वह रथ में इधर-उधर नाचता हुआ प्रतीत हो रहा था। हे राजा! वह अग्नि के गोले की भाँति सर्वत्र दिखाई देता था।

तमेकं समरे शूरं पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयास्तथा अनेकशतसाहस्रं समपश्यन्त लाघवात्

Though the brave one was alone in that battle, because of his dexterity, the Pāṇḍava-s and the Sṛñjaya-s saw him as many hundreds and thousands.

यद्यपि वह वीर उस युद्ध में अकेला था, उसकी निपुणता के कारण पांडवों और सृंजय ने उसे सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में देखा।

मायाकृतात्मानमिव भीष्मं तत्र स्म मेनिरे पूर्वस्यां दिशि तं दृष्ट्वा प्रतीच्यां ददृशुर्जनाः

Everyone there thought that Bhīṣma had used māyā on his own self. In one moment, he was seen in the eastern direction.

वहां सभी ने सोचा कि भीष्म ने अपने ऊपर माया का प्रयोग किया है। एक क्षण में वह पूर्व दिशा की ओर दृष्टिगोचर हुआ।

उदीच्यां चैनमालोक्य दक्षिणस्यां पुनः प्रभो एवं स समरे वीरो गाङ्गेयः प्रत्यदृश्यत

In the next moment, he was seen in the western direction. They saw the lord in the north and immediately saw him in the south. Thus the brave Gāṅgeya was seen in that battle.

अगले ही पल वह पश्चिम दिशा में नजर आया. उन्होंने प्रभु को उत्तर में देखा और तुरंत दक्षिण में देखा। इस प्रकार उस युद्ध में वीर गांगेय को देखा गया।

न चैनं पाण्डवेयानां कश्चिच्छक्नोति वीक्षितुम् विशिखानेव पश्यन्ति भीष्मचापच्युतान्बहून्

There was no one among the Pāṇḍaveya-s who was capable of glancing at him. They only saw many arrows shot from Bhīṣma's bow.

पाण्डवों में से कोई भी ऐसा नहीं था जो उसकी ओर देख सके। उन्होंने केवल भीष्म के धनुष से निकले हुए अनेक बाण देखे।

कुर्वाणं समरे कर्म सूदयानं च वाहिनीम् व्याक्रोशन्त रणे तत्र वीरा बहुविधं बहु अमानुषेण रूपेण चरन्तं पितरं तव

Having seen him perform such great feats in the battle there, with the slaughter of the army, the brave ones uttered many lamentations.

वहाँ युद्ध में उसे सेना का संहार करते हुए ऐसे महान पराक्रम करते देख वीरों ने बहुत-बहुत विलाप किया।

शलभा इव राजानः पतन्ति विधिचोदिताः भीष्माग्निमभि संक्रुद्धं विनाशाय सहस्रशः

Your father wandered around in superhuman form and driven by destiny, thousands of kings fell down like insects, led to the fire of the angry Bhīṣma.

आपके पिता अलौकिक रूप में इधर-उधर घूमते रहे और नियति से प्रेरित होकर हजारों राजा कीड़ों की तरह गिर पड़े, जिससे क्रोधित भीष्म की अग्नि में भस्म हो गए।

न हि मोघः शरः कश्चिदासीद्भीष्मस्य संयुगे नरनागाश्वकायेषु बहुत्वाल्लघुवेधिनः

In that battle, not a single one of Bhīṣma's arrows failed to be successful, because of the large numbers that were arrayed against him, and descended on the bodies of men, elephants and horses.

उस युद्ध में, भीष्म का एक भी बाण सफल नहीं हो सका, क्योंकि बड़ी संख्या में लोग उनके विरुद्ध खड़े थे और मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों के शरीरों पर गिर रहे थे।

भिनत्त्येकेन बाणेन सुमुक्तेन पतत्रिणा गजकङ्कटसंनाहं वज्रेणेवाचलोत्तमम्

With a single shafted arrow that was released well, he brought down an armoured elephant, like the vajra shattering a mountain.

उन्होंने एक ही बाण से, जो अच्छी तरह से छोड़ा गया था, एक बख्तरबंद हाथी को नीचे गिरा दिया, जैसे वज्र पर्वत को तोड़ देता है।

द्वौ त्रीनपि गजारोहान्पिण्डितान्वर्मितानपि नाराचेन सुतीक्ष्णेन निजघान पिता तव

With an extremely sharp iron arrow, your father killed two or three elephantriders, armoured and standing together, at a single stroke.

आपके पिता ने अत्यंत तीखे लोहे के तीर से एक ही झटके में बख्तरबंद और एक साथ खड़े दो या तीन हाथी सवारों को मार डाला।

यो यो भीष्मं नरव्याघ्रमभ्येति युधि कश्चन मुहूर्तदृष्टः स मया पातितो भुवि दृश्यते

Whoever approached Bhīṣma, tiger among men, in that battle, was seen to be brought down onto the ground in an instant.

उस युद्ध में जो कोई भी मनुष्य के बीच के शेर, भीष्म के पास आता था, उसे एक पल में जमीन पर गिरा दिया जाता था।

एवं सा धर्मराजस्य वध्यमाना महाचमूः भीष्मेणातुलवीर्येण व्यशीर्यत सहस्रधा

Thus, Dharmarāja's large army was slaughtered through Bhīṣma's valour and shattered in a thousand ways.

इस प्रकार, भीष्म की वीरता से धर्मराज की बड़ी सेना का वध कर दिया गया और उसे हजारों तरीकों से नष्ट कर दिया गया।

प्रकीर्यत महासेना शरवर्षाभितापिता पश्यतो वासुदेवस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः

Tormented by the shower of arrows, the large army trembled, while Vāsudeva and the great-souled Pārtha looked on.

बाणों की वर्षा से त्रस्त होकर बड़ी सेना काँपने लगी और वासुदेव तथा महाबली पार्थ देखते रह गये।

यतमानापि ते वीरा द्रवमाणान्महारथान् नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं भीष्मबाणप्रपीडिताः

Though the brave ones made every endeavour, they could not restrain the mahāratha-s who were oppressed by Bhīṣma's arrows.

यद्यपि वीरों ने हर संभव प्रयास किया, फिर भी वे भीष्म के बाणों से पीड़ित महारथियों को रोक नहीं सके।

महेन्द्रसमवीर्येण वध्यमाना महाचमूः अभज्यत महाराज न च द्वौ सह धावतः

He slaughtered that large army with a valour that was like that of the great Indra. O great king! It was routed such that no two persons were seen together.

उन्होंने महान इन्द्र के समान पराक्रम से उस विशाल सेना का संहार कर डाला। हे महान राजा! इसे इस तरह से रूट किया गया था कि कोई भी दो व्यक्ति एक साथ नहीं दिखें।

आविद्धनरनागाश्वं पतितध्वजकूबरम् अनीकं पाण्डुपुत्राणां हाहाभूतमचेतनम्

Men, elephants and horses were pierced. Standards and axle-shafts fell down. The soldiers of the sons of Pāṇḍu lost their senses and lamented.

मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को छेद दिया गया। मानक और एक्सल-शाफ़्ट नीचे गिर गए। पाण्डुपुत्रों के सैनिक अपनी सुधबुध खो बैठे और विलाप करने लगे।

जघानात्र पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं तथा प्रियं सखायं चाक्रन्दे सखा दैवबलात्कृतः

Father killed the son and the son killed the father. Driven by the force of destiny, a friend challenged a beloved friend to a fight.

पिता ने पुत्र को और पुत्र ने पिता को मार डाला। नियति की शक्ति से प्रेरित होकर, एक मित्र ने अपने प्रिय मित्र को युद्ध के लिए चुनौती दी।

विमुच्य कवचानन्ये पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकाः प्रकीर्य केशान्धावन्तः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Many soldiers on the side of the sons of Pāṇḍu were seen to run away, with their armour discarded and with their hair dishevelled.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पाण्डु के पुत्रों के पक्ष के कई सैनिकों को उनके कवच उतारकर और उनके बाल बिखरे हुए भागते देखा गया।

तद्गोकुलमिवोद्भ्रान्तमुद्भ्रान्तरथयूथपम् ददृशे पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यमार्तस्वरं तदा

The soldiers of the sons of Pāṇḍu, and even the leaders among them, were seen to be as confounded as a herd of cattle. They lamented in woe.

पाण्डु के पुत्रों के सैनिक और यहाँ तक कि उनके नेता भी मवेशियों के झुण्ड के समान घबराये हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे। उन्होंने दुःख से विलाप किया।

प्रभज्यमानं तत्सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा देवकिनन्दनः उवाच पार्थं बीभत्सुं निगृह्य रथमुत्तमम्

On seeing that the soldiers were routed, Devakī's son stopped that supreme of chariots and spoke to Pārtha Bībhatsu.

यह देखकर कि सैनिक मारे गये, देवकी के पुत्र ने उस रथश्रेष्ठ को रोका और पार्थ बिभात्सु से कहा।

अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः पार्थ यः काङ्क्षितस्त्वया प्रहरास्मै नरव्याघ्र न चेन्मोहाद्विमुह्यसे

"O Pārtha! The hour that you desired, has now arrived. O tiger among men! If you wish to be free from confusion, strike.

"हे पार्थ! वह समय जो तुमने चाहा था, अब आ गया है। हे नर बाघ! यदि तुम भ्रम से मुक्त होना चाहते हो, तो प्रहार करो।"

यत्त्वया कथितं वीर पुरा राज्ञां समागमे भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकान्

O brave one! In earlier times, in the assembly of kings, you had said that you would kill the soldiers of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, with Bhīṣma and Droṇa at the forefront,

हे वीर! पूर्वकाल में राजाओं की सभा में आपने कहा था कि आप भीष्म और द्रोण को आगे रखकर धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के सैनिकों को मार डालेंगे।

सानुबन्धान्हनिष्यामि ये मां योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे इति तत्कुरु कौन्तेय सत्यं वाक्यमरिंदम

with all the relatives and those who wished to fight against you in battle. O Kaunteya! O destroyer of enemies! Act accordingly now and make your words come true.

सभी रिश्तेदारों और उन लोगों के साथ जो युद्ध में आपके खिलाफ लड़ना चाहते थे। हे कौन्तेय! हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! अब तदनुसार कार्य करो और अपने वचनों को सत्य करो।

बीभत्सो पश्य सैन्यं स्वं भज्यमानं समन्ततः द्रवतश्च महीपालान्सर्वान्यौधिष्ठिरे बले

O Bībhatsu! Behold. Your army is being driven back in every direction. Behold. All the kings in Yudhiṣṭhira's army are running away,

हे बीभत्सु! देखो. आपकी सेना को हर दिशा में पीछे खदेड़ा जा रहा है. देखो. युधिष्ठिर की सेना के सभी राजा भाग रहे हैं।

दृष्ट्वा हि समरे भीष्मं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् भयार्ताः संप्रणश्यन्ति सिंहं क्षुद्रमृगा इव

on having seen Bhīṣma in battle, with his mouth gaping open. They are frightened and are being destroyed, like small animals by a lion.

युद्ध में भीष्म को खुले मुँह से देखने पर। वे भयभीत हैं और सिंह द्वारा छोटे जानवरों की तरह नष्ट किये जा रहे हैं।

एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच वासुदेवं धनंजयः चोदयाश्वान्यतो भीष्मो विगाह्यैतद्बलार्णवम्

Having been thus addressed, Dhanañjayā replied to Vāsudeva, "Drive the horses through this ocean of soldiers to where Bhīṣma is stationed."

इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, धनंजय ने वासुदेव को उत्तर दिया, "सैनिकों के इस महासागर के माध्यम से घोड़ों को वहां ले जाओ जहां भीष्म तैनात हैं।"

ततोऽश्वान्रजतप्रख्यांश्चोदयामास माधवः यतो भीष्मरथो राजन्दुष्प्रेक्ष्यो रश्मिमानिव

O king! Mādhava then drove those silver-white steeds to the place where Bhīṣma's chariot, which was like the sun and was difficult to look at, was stationed.

हे राजा! फिर माधव ने उन चाँदी-सफ़ेद घोड़ों को उस स्थान पर पहुँचाया जहाँ भीष्म का रथ, जो सूर्य के समान था और जिसे देखना कठिन था, खड़ा था।

ततस्तत्पुनरावृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् दृष्ट्वा पार्थं महाबाहुं भीष्मायोद्यन्तमाहवे

Having seen the mighty-armed Pārtha advance to fight in the battle against Bhīṣma, Yudhiṣṭhira's great army rallied again.

महाबाहु पार्थ को भीष्म के विरुद्ध युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़ते देख युधिष्ठिर की विशाल सेना फिर से एकत्र हो गई।

ततो भीष्मः कुरुश्रेष्ठः सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः धनंजयरथं तूर्णं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत्

Bhīṣma, foremost among the Kuru-s, roared repeatedly, like a lion. He swiftly enveloped Dhanañjayā's chariot with a shower of arrows.

कुरुवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म सिंह के समान बार-बार दहाड़ते थे। उसने तेजी से बाणों की वर्षा करके धनंजय के रथ को घेर लिया।

क्षणेन स रथस्तस्य सहयः सहसारथिः शरवर्षेण महता संछन्नो न प्रकाशते

In an instant, with the horses and with the charioteer, the chariot disappeared. It was covered by that great shower of arrows and could no longer be seen.

देखते ही देखते रथ घोड़ों और सारथी समेत गायब हो गया। वह बाणों की उस महान वर्षा से ढक गया और अब दिखाई नहीं देता था।

वासुदेवस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो धैर्यमास्थाय सत्त्ववान् चोदयामास तानश्वान्वितुन्नान्भीष्मसायकैः

But the spirited Vāsudeva was not agitated. Though the horses had been wounded by Bhīṣma's arrows, he patiently continued to drive them.

लेकिन उत्साही वासुदेव उत्तेजित नहीं हुए। यद्यपि भीष्म के बाणों से घोड़े घायल हो गये थे, फिर भी उन्होंने धैर्यपूर्वक उन्हें चलाना जारी रखा।

ततः पार्थो धनुर्गृह्य दिव्यं जलदनिस्वनम् पातयामास भीष्मस्य धनुश्छित्त्वा त्रिभिः शरैः

Pārtha picked up his divine bow, with a twang that was like the clap of thunder. He sliced down Bhīṣma's bow with three arrows.

पार्थ ने अपना दिव्य धनुष उठाया, जिसकी टंकार वज्र की ताल के समान थी। उन्होंने तीन बाणों से भीष्म के धनुष को काट डाला।

स च्छिन्नधन्वा कौरव्यः पुनरन्यन्महद्धनुः निमेषान्तरमात्रेण सज्यं चक्रे पिता तव

With his bow sliced down, your father Kauravya again picked up a large bow and strung it in the twinkling of an eye.

धनुष कट जाने के बाद, आपके पिता कौरव्य ने फिर से एक बड़ा धनुष उठाया और पलक झपकते ही उस पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ा दी।

विचकर्ष ततो दोर्भ्यां धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम् अथास्य तदपि क्रुद्धश्चिच्छेद धनुरर्जुनः

He drew the bow with his two hands and its twang was like the roar of the clouds. But the enraged Arjuna sliced down that bow too.

उसने अपने दोनों हाथों से धनुष खींचा और उसकी टंकार बादलों की गर्जना के समान थी। लेकिन क्रोधित अर्जुन ने उस धनुष को भी काट डाला।

तस्य तत्पूजयामास लाघवं शंतनोः सुतः साधु पार्थ महाबाहो साधु भो पाण्डुनन्दन

At this, Śāntanu's son applauded his dexterity. "O Pārtha! O mighty-armed one! O descendant of Pāṇḍu! Wonderful.

इस पर शांतनु के पुत्र ने उनकी निपुणता की सराहना की। "हे पार्थ! हे महाबाहु! हे पांडु के वंशज! अद्भुत।

त्वय्येवैतद्युक्तरूपं महत्कर्म धनंजय प्रीतोऽस्मि सुदृढं पुत्र कुरु युद्धं मया सह

O Dhanañjayā! Such a great deed is deserving of you. O son! I am pleased with you. Fight hard with me now."

हे धनंजय! ऐसा महान कार्य आपके योग्य है। हे वत्स मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूं. अब मेरे साथ जमकर युद्ध करो।”

इति पार्थं प्रशस्याथ प्रगृह्यान्यन्महद्धनुः मुमोच समरे वीरः शरान्पार्थरथं प्रति

Having thus praised Pārtha and having grasped another large bow, in that battle, the brave one released arrows towards Pārtha's chariot.

इस प्रकार पार्थ की स्तुति करके और दूसरा बड़ा धनुष लेकर उस युद्ध में वीर ने पार्थ के रथ की ओर बाण छोड़े।

अदर्शयद्वासुदेवो हययाने परं बलम् मोघान्कुर्वञ्शरांस्तस्य मण्डलान्यचरल्लघु

Vāsudeva displayed his supreme skill in handling horses. By driving around in swift circles, he avoided all those arrows.

वासुदेव ने घोड़ों को संभालने में अपनी सर्वोच्च कुशलता प्रदर्शित की। तीव्र वृत्ताकारों में घूमकर उसने उन सभी बाणों से बचाव किया।

तथापि भीष्मः सुदृढं वासुदेवधनंजयौ विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैः सर्वगात्रेषु मारिष

O venerable one! However, with great force, Bhīṣma used sharp arrows to pierce Vāsudeva and Dhanañjayā all over their bodies.

हे आदरणीय! हालाँकि, बड़ी ताकत से भीष्म ने वासुदेव और धनंजय को उनके पूरे शरीर पर छेदने के लिए तीखे बाणों का इस्तेमाल किया।

शुशुभाते नरव्याघ्रौ तौ भीष्मशरविक्षतौ गोवृषाविव नर्दन्तौ विषाणोल्लिखिताङ्कितौ

Thus wounded by Bhīṣma's arrows, those two tigers among men were adorned like two roaring bulls, with the scratches of thorns on them.

इस प्रकार भीष्म के बाणों से घायल होकर वे दोनों नर बाघ काँटों की खरोंचों से दहाड़ते हुए दो गर्जना करते हुए बैलों के समान सुशोभित हो गये।

पुनश्चापि सुसंक्रुद्धः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः कृष्णयोर्युधि संरब्धो भीष्मो व्यावारयद्दिशः

Yet again, extremely angry, Bhīṣma used straight-tufted arrows to cover the two Kṛṣṇās on every side.

फिर भी, अत्यधिक क्रोधित होकर, भीष्म ने दोनों कृष्णों को हर तरफ से ढकने के लिए सीधे-नुकीले बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

वार्ष्णेयं च शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कम्पयामास रोषितः मुहुरभ्युत्स्मयन्भीष्मः प्रहस्य स्वनवत्तदा

Though enraged, Bhīṣma repeatedly smiled and used his sharp arrows to make Vārṣṇeya tremble and wonder.

क्रोधित होने पर भी, भीष्म बार-बार मुस्कुराते थे और वार्ष्णेय को कांपने और आश्चर्यचकित करने के लिए अपने तीखे बाणों का इस्तेमाल करते थे।

ततः कृष्णस्तु समरे दृष्ट्वा भीष्मपराक्रमम् संप्रेक्ष्य च महाबाहुः पार्थस्य मृदुयुद्धताम्

Kṛṣṇā witnessed Bhīṣma's valour in battle and saw the mildness with which the mighty-armed Pārtha countered him.

कृष्ण ने युद्ध में भीष्म की वीरता देखी और उस सौम्यता को देखा जिसके साथ महाबाहु पार्थ ने उनका मुकाबला किया।

भीष्मं च शरवर्षाणि सृजन्तमनिशं युधि प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यं मध्यमासाद्य सेनयोः

In that encounter, Bhīṣma created an incessant shower of arrows. In the midst of the two armies, he was like the tormenting sun.

उस मुठभेड़ में भीष्म ने बाणों की अनवरत वर्षा की। दोनों सेनाओं के बीच में वह पीड़ादायक सूर्य के समान था।

वरान्वरान्विनिघ्नन्तं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकान् युगान्तमिव कुर्वाणं भीष्मं यौधिष्ठिरे बले

He was killing the best of the best among the soldiers of Pāṇḍu's son. Bhīṣma was like the fire of destruction amidst Yudhiṣṭhira's army.

वह पाण्डु पुत्र के सर्वोत्तम सैनिकों को मार रहा था। युधिष्ठिर की सेना के बीच भीष्म विनाश की अग्नि के समान थे।

अमृष्यमाणो भगवान्केशवः परवीरहा अचिन्तयदमेयात्मा नास्ति यौधिष्ठिरं बलम्

The lord Keśava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, could no longer tolerate this. The one with the immeasurable soul thought that Yudhiṣṭhira's army would not be able to survive.

शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाले भगवान केशव अब इसे सहन नहीं कर सके। अथाह आत्मा वाले ने सोचा कि युधिष्ठिर की सेना टिक नहीं सकेगी।

एकाह्ना हि रणे भीष्मो नाशयेद्देवदानवान् किमु पाण्डुसुतान्युद्धे सबलान्सपदानुगान्

In a battle, Bhīṣma was capable of destroying the gods and the dānava-s in a single day, not to speak of taking on the sons of Pāṇḍu, with their soldiers and their followers, in a fight.

एक युद्ध में, भीष्म एक ही दिन में देवताओं और दानवों को नष्ट करने में सक्षम थे, पांडु के पुत्रों को उनके सैनिकों और उनके अनुयायियों के साथ युद्ध में लेने की तो बात ही छोड़ दें।

द्रवते च महत्सैन्यं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः एते च कौरवास्तूर्णं प्रभग्नान्दृश्य सोमकान् आद्रवन्ति रणे हृष्टा हर्षयन्तः पितामहम्

The large army of the great-souled Pāṇḍava began to flee. Having seen the Somaka-s shattered and fleeing in that battle, the Kaurava-s were delighted and advanced to the fight, gladdening the grandfather.

महाबली पाण्डवों की विशाल सेना भागने लगी। उस युद्ध में सोमकों को चूर-चूर होते और भागते देखकर कौरव प्रसन्न हुए और पितामह को प्रसन्न करते हुए युद्ध के लिए आगे बढ़े।

सोऽहं भीष्मं निहन्म्यद्य पाण्डवार्थाय दंशितः भारमेतं विनेष्यामि पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्

He thought, "For the welfare of the Pāṇḍava-s, I will armour myself and kill Bhīṣma today. I will relieve the burden of the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s.

उसने सोचा, "पांडवों के कल्याण के लिए, मैं खुद को कवच बनाऊंगा और आज भीष्म को मार डालूंगा। मैं महान आत्मा वाले पांडवों का बोझ कम कर दूंगा।"

अर्जुनोऽपि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्वध्यमानो हि संयुगे कर्तव्यं नाभिजानाति रणे भीष्मस्य गौरवात्

Though Arjuna has been struck with sharp arrows in this battle, he does not know his duty in this encounter, on account of the respect he has for Bhīṣma."

हालाँकि इस युद्ध में अर्जुन को तीखे बाणों से चोट लगी है, लेकिन भीष्म के प्रति उसके मन में सम्मान के कारण, वह इस मुठभेड़ में अपने कर्तव्य को नहीं जानता है।

तथा चिन्तयतस्तस्य भूय एव पितामहः प्रेषयामास संक्रुद्धः शरान्पार्थरथं प्रति

While he was reflecting in this way, the wrathful grandfather again unleashed arrows towards Pārtha's chariot.

जब वह इस प्रकार विचार कर रहा था, तब क्रोधित पितामह ने पुनः पार्थ के रथ की ओर बाण छोड़े।

तेषां बहुत्वाद्धि भृशं शराणां; दिशोऽथ सर्वाः पिहिता बभूवुः न चान्तरिक्षं न दिशो न भूमि;र्न भास्करोऽदृश्यत रश्मिमाली ववुश्च वातास्तुमुलाः सधूमा; दिशश्च सर्वाः क्षुभिता बभूवुः

Because of the many arrows that were flying around, all the directions were enveloped. The sky, the directions and the earth could not be seen. Nor could the sun, the possessor of the rays, be seen. The tumultuous wind seemed to be mixed with smoke. All the directions were agitated.

चारों ओर उड़ते हुए बहुत से बाणों के कारण सारी दिशाएँ आच्छादित हो गयीं। आकाश, दिशाएँ और पृथ्वी दिखाई नहीं दे रहे थे। न ही किरणों का स्वामी सूर्य दिखाई दे रहा था। तूफानी हवा में धुंआ घुला हुआ लग रहा था। सारी दिशाएँ उद्वेलित हो उठीं।

द्रोणो विकर्णोऽथ जयद्रथश्च; भूरिश्रवाः कृतवर्मा कृपश्च श्रुतायुरम्बष्ठपतिश्च राजा; विन्दानुविन्दौ च सुदक्षिणश्च

Droṇa, Vikarṇa, Jayadratha, Bhurishrava, Kritavarma, Kṛpa, Śrutāyu, the lord and king of Ambaṣṭha, Vinda and Anuvinda, Sudakṣiṇa,

द्रोण, विकर्ण, जयद्रथ, भूरिश्रवा, कृतवर्मा, कृप, श्रुतायु, अम्बष्ठ के स्वामी और राजा, विन्द और अनुविन्द, सुदक्षिण,

प्राच्याश्च सौवीरगणाश्च सर्वे; वसातयः क्षुद्रकमालवाश्च किरीटिनं त्वरमाणाभिसस्रु;र्निदेशगाः शांतनवस्य राज्ञः

those from the east, all the large numbers of Sauvīra-s, the Vasatayas, the Kṣudraka-s and the Mālavā-s—on the instructions of the king who was Śāntanu's son, all of these swiftly advanced to do battle with Kirīṭī.

शांतनु के पुत्र राजा के आदेश पर पूर्व से बड़ी संख्या में सौवीर, वसत्य, क्षुद्रक और मालव, ये सभी तेजी से किरीटी के साथ युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़े।

तं वाजिपादातरथौघजालै;रनेकसाहस्रशतैर्ददर्श किरीटिनं संपरिवार्यमाणं; शिनेर्नप्ता वारणयूथपैश्च

Śini's grandson saw that Kirīṭī was surrounded by a net with hundreds and thousands of horses, infantry and chariots and a large number of elephants.

शिनि के पोते ने देखा कि किरीटी सैकड़ों और हजारों घोड़ों, पैदल सेना और रथों और बड़ी संख्या में हाथियों के साथ जाल से घिरा हुआ था।

ततस्तु दृष्ट्वार्जुनवासुदेवौ; पदातिनागाश्वरथैः समन्तात् अभिद्रुतौ शस्त्रभृतां वरिष्ठौ; शिनिप्रवीरोऽभिससार तूर्णम्

Śini's brave descendant, foremost among the wielders of arms, swiftly advanced to where the soldiers were, wielding a giant bow.

सिनी का बहादुर वंशज, हथियार रखने वालों में अग्रणी, एक विशाल धनुष का उपयोग करते हुए तेजी से उस ओर आगे बढ़ा, जहां सैनिक थे।

स तान्यनीकानि महाधनुष्मा;ञ्शिनिप्रवीरः सहसाभिपत्य चकार साहाय्यमथार्जुनस्य; विष्णुर्यथा वृत्रनिषूदनस्य

The brave one from Śini's lineage suddenly arrived to aid Arjuna, like Viṣṇu helping the destroyer of Vṛtra.

शिनि के वंश का एक बहादुर व्यक्ति अचानक अर्जुन की सहायता के लिए आ गया, जैसे विष्णु ने वृत्र के विनाशक की मदद की थी।

विशीर्णनागाश्वरथध्वजौघं; भीष्मेण वित्रासितसर्वयोधम् युधिष्ठिरानीकमभिद्रवन्तं; प्रोवाच संदृश्य शिनिप्रवीरः

The elephants, horses, chariots and standards were shattered and all the warriors were frightened by Bhīṣma. Yudhiṣṭhira's soldiers were running away. On seeing this, Śini's brave descendant said,

हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और ध्वज टूट गये और सभी योद्धा भीष्म से भयभीत हो गये। युधिष्ठिर के सैनिक भाग रहे थे। यह देखकर सिनी के बहादुर वंशज ने कहा,

क्व क्षत्रिया यास्यथ नैष धर्मः; सतां पुरस्तात्कथितः पुराणैः मा स्वां प्रतिज्ञां जहत प्रवीराः; स्वं वीरधर्मं परिपालयध्वम्

"O kṣatriya-s! Where are you going? This is not the dharma of virtuous men, as it has been recounted in the ancient texts. O brave ones! Do not forsake your oaths. Follow the dharma of those who are brave."

"हे क्षत्रियों! आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं? यह पुण्य पुरुषों का धर्म नहीं है, जैसा कि प्राचीन ग्रंथों में बताया गया है। हे वीरों! अपनी शपथ मत छोड़ो। जो वीर हैं उनके धर्म का पालन करो।"

तान्वासवानन्तरजो निशम्य; नरेन्द्रमुख्यान्द्रवतः समन्तात् पार्थस्य दृष्ट्वा मृदुयुद्धतां च; भीष्मं च संख्ये समुदीर्यमाणम्

Vāsava's younger brother was unable to tolerate the act of the foremost among the kings running away. In that battle, he saw that Bhīṣma was exerting all his powers, that Pārtha was mild and that the Kuru-s were advancing from every direction.

वासव का छोटा भाई राजाओं में सबसे अग्रणी राजा के भागने के कृत्य को सहन करने में असमर्थ था। उस युद्ध में उन्होंने देखा कि भीष्म अपनी सारी शक्ति लगा रहे थे, पार्थ सौम्य थे और कुरु हर दिशा से आगे बढ़ रहे थे।

अमृष्यमाणः स ततो महात्मा; यशस्विनं सर्वदशार्हभर्ता उवाच शैनेयमभिप्रशंस;न्दृष्ट्वा कुरूनापततः समन्तात्

Unable to tolerate it, the great-souled and illustrious one, the protector of all the Dāśārha-s, spoke approvingly to Śini's descendant.

इसे सहन करने में असमर्थ, सभी दशार्हों के रक्षक, महान आत्मा और शानदार व्यक्ति ने शिनि के वंशज से अनुमोदनपूर्वक बात की।

ये यान्ति यान्त्वेव शिनिप्रवीर; येऽपि स्थिताः सात्वत तेऽपि यान्तु भीष्मं रथात्पश्य निपात्यमानं; द्रोणं च संख्ये सगणं मयाद्य

"O brave descendant of the Śini lineage! Those who are running away, are indeed running away. O Sātvata! Let those who are still here, also flee. Behold. In this battle, I will today bring down Bhīṣma from his chariot and also Droṇa and all their followers.

"हे शिनि वंश के वीर वंशज! जो भाग रहे हैं, वे वास्तव में भाग रहे हैं। हे सात्वत! जो लोग अभी भी यहां हैं, उन्हें भी भागने दो। देखो। इस युद्ध में, मैं आज भीष्म को उनके रथ से और द्रोण तथा उनके सभी अनुयायियों को नीचे गिरा दूंगा।

नासौ रथः सात्वत कौरवाणां; क्रुद्धस्य मुच्येत रणेऽद्य कश्चित् तस्मादहं गृह्य रथाङ्गमुग्रं; प्राणं हरिष्यामि महाव्रतस्य

O Sātvata! There is no charioteer among the Kaurava-s who will escape when I am enraged in battle today. I will grasp the terrible cakra and rob the one who is great in his vows, of his life.

हे सात्वत! आज युद्ध में मेरे क्रोधित होने पर कौरवों में कोई सारथी नहीं है जो बच सके। मैं भयानक चक्र को पकड़ लूंगा और जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में महान है, उसका जीवन छीन लूंगा।

निहत्य भीष्मं सगणं तथाजौ; द्रोणं च शैनेय रथप्रवीरम् प्रीतिं करिष्यामि धनंजयस्य; राज्ञश्च भीमस्य तथाश्विनोश्च

O descendant of Śini! I will kill Bhīṣma and his followers and Droṇa, the foremost among charioteers. I will act so as to bring pleasure to Dhanañjayā, the king, Bhīmā and the two Aśvin-s.

हे शिनि के वंशज! मैं भीष्म और उनके अनुयायियों तथा रथियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण को मार डालूँगा। मैं धनंजय, राजा, भीम और दोनों अश्विनों को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कार्य करूंगा।

निहत्य सर्वान्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रां;स्तत्पक्षिणो ये च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः राज्येन राजानमजातशत्रुं; संपादयिष्याम्यहमद्य हृष्टः

I will kill all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the foremost among kings who are on their side. In a cheerful frame of mind, I will today give the kingdom to King Ajātaśatru."

मैं धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्रों और उनके पक्ष के प्रमुख राजाओं को मार डालूँगा। प्रसन्न मन से, मैं आज राजा अजातशत्रु को राज्य दूंगा।"

ततः सुनाभं वसुदेवपुत्रः; सूर्यप्रभं वज्रसमप्रभावम् क्षुरान्तमुद्यम्य भुजेन चक्रं; रथादवप्लुत्य विसृज्य वाहान्

Having said this, Vāsudeva's son discarded the reins of the chariot and raised the cakra in his hand. It possessed an excellent handle and was like the sun in its radiance. It was like the vajra in its power.

यह कहकर वासुदेव पुत्र ने रथ की लगाम त्याग दी और चक्र हाथ में उठा लिया। उसके पास एक उत्कृष्ट हैंडल था और उसकी चमक सूर्य के समान थी। यह अपनी शक्ति में वज्र के समान था।

संकम्पयन्गां चरणैर्महात्मा; वेगेन कृष्णः प्रससार भीष्मम् मदान्धमाजौ समुदीर्णदर्पः; सिंहो जिघांसन्निव वारणेन्द्रम्

The great-souled one made the earth tremble with his footsteps. With great force, Kṛṣṇā rushed towards Bhīṣma. The great Indra's younger brother was angry. He was like a lion that wished to kill a king of the elephants.

उस महाबली ने अपने पदचाप से पृथ्वी को कम्पित कर दिया। कृष्ण बड़ी ताकत से भीष्म की ओर दौड़े। महान इंद्र के छोटे भाई क्रोधित थे। वह उस सिंह के समान था जो हाथियों के राजा को मारना चाहता था।

सोऽभ्यद्रवद्भीष्ममनीकमध्ये; क्रुद्धो महेन्द्रावरजः प्रमाथी व्यालम्बिपीतान्तपटश्चकाशे; घनो यथा खेऽचिरभापिनद्धः

He rushed towards Bhīṣma, as he was stationed in the midst of his troops. He was blind in his anger and agitated in his pride. The ends of his yellow garments trailed in the air and looked like a cloud charged with lightning in the sky.

वह भीष्म की ओर दौड़ा, क्योंकि वह अपने सैनिकों के बीच में खड़ा था। वह क्रोध में अंधा और अहंकार में व्याकुल था। उसके पीले कपड़ों का सिरा हवा में लहरा रहा था और ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे आकाश में बिजली चमकते हुए कोई बादल हो।

सुदर्शनं चास्य रराज शौरे;स्तच्चक्रपद्मं सुभुजोरुनालम् यथादिपद्मं तरुणार्कवर्णं; रराज नारायणनाभिजातम्

Sudarśanā looked like a glorious lotus, with Śauri's beautiful arm as the stalk. It was like the original lotus, as resplendent as the morning sun, which emerged from Nārāyaṇa's navel.

सुदर्शन एक शानदार कमल की तरह लग रहा था, जिसके डंठल के रूप में शौरी की सुंदर भुजा थी। यह मूल कमल के समान था, जो सुबह के सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान था, जो नारायण की नाभि से निकला था।

तत्कृष्णकोपोदयसूर्यबुद्धं; क्षुरान्ततीक्ष्णाग्रसुजातपत्रम् तस्यैव देहोरुसरःप्ररूढं; रराज नारायणबाहुनालम्

Kṛṣṇā's anger was like the rising sun that caused the lotus to bloom and its beautiful petals were as sharp as a razor.

कृष्ण का क्रोध उगते सूरज की तरह था जिससे कमल खिल गया और उसकी सुंदर पंखुड़ियाँ उस्तरे की तरह तेज़ हो गईं।

तमात्तचक्रं प्रणदन्तमुच्चैः; क्रुद्धं महेन्द्रावरजं समीक्ष्य सर्वाणि भूतानि भृशं विनेदुः; क्षयं कुरूणामिति चिन्तयित्वा

On seeing that the great Indra's younger brother was angry and roaring and that he was wielding the cakra, all the beings shrieked in lamentation. They thought that the destruction of the Kuru-s was nigh.

यह देखकर कि महान इंद्र का छोटा भाई क्रोधित था और दहाड़ रहा था और वह चक्र चला रहा था, सभी प्राणी विलाप करने लगे। उन्होंने सोचा कि कुरु-वंश का विनाश निकट है।

स वासुदेवः प्रगृहीतचक्रः; संवर्तयिष्यन्निव जीवलोकम् अभ्युत्पतँल्लोकगुरुर्बभासे; भूतानि धक्ष्यन्निव कालवह्निः

Having grasped the cakra, Vāsudeva looked like the fire of destruction that consumes the world of the living. The preceptor of the worlds arose like the fire of destruction that would destroy all beings.

चक्र को पकड़कर, वासुदेव विनाश की आग की तरह लग रहे थे जो जीवित दुनिया को भस्म कर देती है। लोकों के गुरु विनाश की आग की तरह उठे जो सभी प्राणियों को नष्ट कर देगी।

तमापतन्तं प्रगृहीतचक्रं; समीक्ष्य देवं द्विपदां वरिष्ठम् असंभ्रमात्कार्मुकबाणपाणी; रथे स्थितः शांतनवोऽभ्युवाच

On seeing the god, foremost among men, advance with the cakra, Śāntanu's son remained fearlessly stationed on his chariot, with the bow and arrows in his hand. He said,

मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ भगवान को चक्र के साथ आगे बढ़ते देख शांतनु का पुत्र हाथ में धनुष और बाण लेकर निर्भय होकर अपने रथ पर खड़ा रहा। उसने कहा,

एह्येहि देवेश जगन्निवास; नमोऽस्तु ते शार्ङ्गरथाङ्गपाणे प्रसह्य मां पातय लोकनाथ; रथोत्तमाद्भूतशरण्य संख्ये

"O lord of the gods! O one whose abode is the universe! O wielder of the Śārṅga bow! O one with the cakra in your hand! Come. I am bowing down before you. O protector of the worlds! Bring me down from this supreme chariot. You are the wonderful refuge of everyone in a battle.

"हे देवताओं के स्वामी! हे जिनका निवास ब्रह्मांड है! हे शारंग धनुष धारक! हे हाथ में चक्र वाले! आओ। मैं तुम्हारे सामने झुक रहा हूं। हे विश्व के रक्षक! मुझे इस सर्वोच्च रथ से नीचे लाओ। तुम युद्ध में सभी के अद्भुत आश्रय हो।

त्वया हतस्येह ममाद्य कृष्ण; श्रेयः परस्मिन्निह चैव लोके संभावितोऽस्म्यन्धकवृष्णिनाथ; लोकैस्त्रिभिर्वीर तवाभियानात्

O Kṛṣṇā! If I am killed by you today, I will obtain supreme welfare in this world and in the next. O protector of the Andhaka-s and the Vṛṣṇi-s! You have shown me great honour and my valour will be celebrated in the three worlds."

हे कृष्ण! यदि आज मैं तुम्हारे द्वारा मारा जाऊँगा तो इस लोक में तथा परलोक में मेरा परम कल्याण होगा। हे अंधकों और वृष्णियों के रक्षक! आपने मुझे बहुत सम्मान दिया है और मेरी वीरता का जश्न तीनों लोकों में मनाया जाएगा।"

रथादवप्लुत्य ततस्त्वरावा;न्पार्थोऽप्यनुद्रुत्य यदुप्रवीरम् जग्राह पीनोत्तमलम्बबाहुं; बाह्वोर्हरिं व्यायतपीनबाहुः

However, Pārtha swiftly descended from his chariot and ran after the foremost of the Yadu-s. With his thick and long arms, he seized Harī's large and thick arms.

हालाँकि, पार्थ तेजी से अपने रथ से उतरे और यदुओं में सबसे आगे दौड़े। उसने अपनी मोटी और लंबी भुजाओं से हरि की बड़ी और मोटी भुजाओं को पकड़ लिया।

निगृह्यमाणश्च तदादिदेवो; भृशं सरोषः किल नाम योगी आदाय वेगेन जगाम विष्णु;र्जिष्णुं महावात इवैकवृक्षम्

The original god, whose name is the great yogi, was consumed by great wrath. Though he was seized in this way, Viṣṇu dragged Jiṣṇu after him with great force, like a great storm carries away a tree.

मूल देवता, जिनका नाम महान योगी है, बड़े क्रोध से भस्म हो गये। हालाँकि उसे इस तरह से पकड़ लिया गया था, विष्णु ने जिष्णु को बड़ी ताकत से अपने पीछे खींच लिया, जैसे कोई बड़ा तूफान किसी पेड़ को उड़ा ले जाता है।

पार्थस्तु विष्टभ्य बलेन पादौ; भीष्मान्तिकं तूर्णमभिद्रवन्तम् बलान्निजग्राह किरीटमाली; पदेऽथ राजन्दशमे कथंचित्

But as he was swiftly advancing towards Bhīṣma, Pārtha forcibly grasped him by the feet. O king! Thus grasping him with force, Kirīṭī succeeded in stopping him at the tenth step.

लेकिन जैसे ही वह तेजी से भीष्म की ओर बढ़ रहा था, पार्थ ने बलपूर्वक उसके पैर पकड़ लिए। हे राजा! इस प्रकार बलपूर्वक उसे पकड़कर दसवें चरण पर किरीटी उसे रोकने में सफल हो गई।

अवस्थितं च प्रणिपत्य कृष्णं; प्रीतोऽर्जुनः काञ्चनचित्रमाली उवाच कोपं प्रतिसंहरेति; गतिर्भवान्केशव पाण्डवानाम्

When Kṛṣṇā had stopped, bedecked with a beautiful and golden garland, Arjuna happily bowed down before him and said, "O Keśava! You are the refuge of the Pāṇḍava-s. Control your anger.

जब कृष्ण रुके, सुंदर और सुनहरी माला से सुसज्जित, अर्जुन ने खुशी से उनके सामने झुककर कहा, "हे केशव! आप पांडवों के आश्रय हैं। अपने क्रोध पर नियंत्रण रखें।

न हास्यते कर्म यथाप्रतिज्ञं; पुत्रैः शपे केशव सोदरैश्च अन्तं करिष्यामि यथा कुरूणां; त्वयाहमिन्द्रानुज संप्रयुक्तः

O Keśava! I swear in the names of my sons and brothers that I will not deviate from the acts that I have promised to carry out. O younger brother of Indra! Instructed by you, I will certainly destroy the Kuru-s."

हे केशव! मैं अपने बेटों और भाइयों के नाम की शपथ लेता हूं कि मैं उन कार्यों से पीछे नहीं हटूंगा जिन्हें पूरा करने का मैंने वादा किया है। हे इंद्र के छोटे भाई! आपकी आज्ञा से मैं अवश्य ही कुरुवंश को नष्ट कर दूँगा।"

ततः प्रतिज्ञां समयं च तस्मै; जनार्दनः प्रीतमना निशम्य स्थितः प्रिये कौरवसत्तमस्य; रथं सचक्रः पुनरारुरोह

Hearing the promise and the pledge, Janārdana was happy and was pacified. He was always engaged in the welfare of the supreme among the Kaurava-s. With the cakra, he again ascended on the chariot.

वचन और प्रतिज्ञा सुनकर जनार्दन प्रसन्न हुए और शान्त हो गये। वह सदैव कौरवों के कल्याण में लगे रहते थे। वह चक्र सहित पुनः रथ पर चढ़ गया।

स तानभीषून्पुनराददानः; प्रगृह्य शङ्खं द्विषतां निहन्ता विनादयामास ततो दिशश्च; स पाञ्चजन्यस्य रवेण शौरिः

The slayer of enemies again grasped the reins. Śauri grasped his conch shell Pāñcajanya and blew on it, making the directions resound with its roar.

शत्रु संहारक ने फिर लगाम थाम ली। शौरी ने अपना शंख पाञ्चजन्य उठाया और उसे बजाया, जिससे दिशाएँ उसकी गर्जना से गूंज उठीं।

व्याविद्धनिष्काङ्गदकुण्डलं तं; रजोविकीर्णाञ्चितपक्ष्मनेत्रम् विशुद्धदंष्ट्रं प्रगृहीतशङ्खं; विचुक्रुशुः प्रेक्ष्य कुरुप्रवीराः

The foremost among the Kuru-s saw him, adorned with a necklace, armlets and earrings. His curved eyelashes were smeared with dust. With gleaming teeth, he grasped the conch shell and they set up a loud cry.

कौरवों में सबसे अग्रणी ने उसे देखा, वह हार, बाजूबंद और कुंडल से सुसज्जित था। उसकी घुमावदार पलकें धूल से सनी हुई थीं। चमचमाते दांतों से उसने शंख पकड़ लिया और उन्होंने जोर से रोना शुरू कर दिया।

मृदङ्गभेरीपटहप्रणादा; नेमिस्वना दुन्दुभिनिस्वनाश्च ससिंहनादाश्च बभूवुरुग्राः; सर्वेष्वनीकेषु ततः कुरूणाम्

Tambourines, drums, kettledrums and smaller drums began to sound, mixed with the sound of chariot wheels. Lion-like terrible roars were uttered among the Kuru soldiers.

रथ के पहियों की ध्वनि के साथ तम्बूरे, ढोल, नगाड़े और छोटे ढोल बजने लगे। कुरु सैनिकों में सिंह के समान भयंकर गर्जना होने लगी।

गाण्डीवघोषः स्तनयित्नुकल्पो; जगाम पार्थस्य नभो दिशश्च जग्मुश्च बाणा विमलाः प्रसन्नाः; सर्वा दिशः पाण्डवचापमुक्ताः

There was the roar of Pārtha's Gāṇḍīva, ascending into the sky and the directions like the clap of thunder. The bright and polished arrows released from Pāṇḍava's bow covered all the directions.

पार्थ के गांडीव की गर्जना आकाश और दिशाओं में वज्र की ताल के समान हो रही थी। पांडवों के धनुष से छूटे चमकीले और चमकते हुए बाणों ने सभी दिशाओं को ढक लिया।

तं कौरवाणामधिपो बलेन; भीष्मेण भूरिश्रवसा च सार्धम् अभ्युद्ययावुद्यतबाणपाणिः; कक्षं दिधक्षन्निव धूमकेतुः

Together with Bhīṣma and Bhurishrava and an army, the lord of the Kaurava-s advanced against him. He held raised arrows in his hand and was like a fire that would consume dry wood.

भीष्म और भूरिश्रवा और एक सेना के साथ, कौरवों के स्वामी उसके खिलाफ आगे बढ़े। उसके हाथ में उठे हुए तीर थे और वह आग के समान थी जो सूखी लकड़ी को भस्म कर देती थी।

अथार्जुनाय प्रजहार भल्ला;न्भूरिश्रवाः सप्त सुवर्णपुङ्खान् दुर्योधनस्तोमरमुग्रवेगं; शल्यो गदां शांतनवश्च शक्तिम्

Bhurishrava shot seven gold-tufted and broad arrows at Arjuna. Duryodhana hurled an extremely forceful lance, Śalya a club and Śāntanu's son a spear.

भूरिश्रवा ने अर्जुन पर सात स्वर्ण-जटित और चौड़े बाण चलाए। दुर्योधन ने अत्यंत शक्तिशाली भाला, शल्य ने गदा और शान्तनु के पुत्र ने भाला फेंका।

स सप्तभिः सप्त शरप्रवेका;न्संवार्य भूरिश्रवसा विसृष्टान् शितेन दुर्योधनबाहुमुक्तं; क्षुरेण तत्तोमरमुन्ममाथ

But he used seven arrows to counter the seven supreme arrows shot by Bhurishrava. With a razor-sharp arrow, he countered the lance that had been released from Duryodhana's hand.

लेकिन उन्होंने भूरिश्रवा द्वारा चलाये गये सात श्रेष्ठ बाणों का मुकाबला करने के लिए सात बाणों का उपयोग किया। उन्होंने दुर्योधन के हाथ से छूटे हुए भाले का मुकाबला अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण बाण से किया।

ततः शुभामापततीं स शक्तिं; विद्युत्प्रभां शांतनवेन मुक्ताम् गदां च मद्राधिपबाहुमुक्तां; द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यां निचकर्त वीरः

Śāntanu's son had hurled a spear at him, as resplendent as lightning. But as it descended, the brave one used two arrows to cut this down and also the club that had been released from the arms of the king of Madra.

शान्तनु के पुत्र ने उन पर बिजली के समान देदीप्यमान भाला फेंका था। लेकिन जैसे ही वह नीचे उतरा, वीर ने इसे और मद्र के राजा की भुजाओं से छूटी हुई गदा को काटने के लिए दो बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

ततो भुजाभ्यां बलवद्विकृष्य; चित्रं धनुर्गाण्डिवमप्रमेयम् माहेन्द्रमस्त्रं विधिवत्सुघोरं; प्रादुश्चकाराद्भुतमन्तरिक्षे

He used the strength of his two arms to draw the beautiful bow Gāṇḍīva, whose energy was immeasurable. In accordance with the prescriptions, he invoked the extremely terrible and wonderful weapon of the great Indra and made it appear in the sky.

उन्होंने सुंदर धनुष गांडीव को खींचने के लिए अपनी दोनों भुजाओं की ताकत का इस्तेमाल किया, जिसकी ऊर्जा अतुलनीय थी। नुस्खे के अनुसार, उन्होंने महान इंद्र के अत्यंत भयानक और अद्भुत हथियार का आह्वान किया और उसे आकाश में प्रकट किया।

तेनोत्तमास्त्रेण ततो महात्मा; सर्वाण्यनीकानि महाधनुष्मान् शरौघजालैर्विमलाग्निवर्णै;र्निवारयामास किरीटमाली

The great-souled and great archer, Kirīṭī, used that weapon to counter all the soldiers. It showered down a mās-s of polished arrows, with the complexion of the fire.

महाबली और महान धनुर्धर किरीटी ने सभी सैनिकों का मुकाबला करने के लिए उस हथियार का उपयोग किया। उसने अग्नि के समान रंग वाले बहुत सारे पॉलिश किये हुए बाणों की वर्षा की।

शिलीमुखाः पार्थधनुःप्रमुक्ता; रथान्ध्वजाग्राणि धनूंषि बाहून् निकृत्य देहान्विविशुः परेषां; नरेन्द्रनागेन्द्रतुरंगमाणाम्

The many arrows that were released from Pārtha's bow cut down chariots, standards and bows and the arms that held them. They penetrated the bodies of the enemy kings, the gigantic elephants and the large number of horses.

पार्थ के धनुष से छूटे हुए अनेक बाणों ने रथों, ध्वजों, धनुषों तथा उन्हें धारण करने वाली भुजाओं को काट डाला। उन्होंने शत्रु राजाओं के शरीरों, विशाल हाथियों और बड़ी संख्या में घोड़ों को भेद दिया।

ततो दिशश्चानुदिशश्च पार्थः; शरैः सुधारैर्निशितैर्वितत्य गाण्डीवशब्देन मनांसि तेषां; किरीटमाली व्यथयां चकार

Having covered all the directions and the sub-directions with his extremely sharp arrows, Pārtha created terror in their minds with the twang of Gāṇḍīva.

पार्थ ने अपने अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण बाणों से समस्त दिशाओं और उपदिशाओं को आच्छादित करके गाण्डीव की टंकार से उनके मन में भय उत्पन्न कर दिया।

तस्मिंस्तथा घोरतमे प्रवृत्ते; शङ्खस्वना दुन्दुभिनिस्वनाश्च अन्तर्हिता गाण्डिवनिस्वनेन; बभूवुरुग्राश्च रणप्रणादाः

Thus did Kirīṭī oppress them and as that terrible encounter raged, the sounds of conch shells and kettledrums were surpassed by Gāṇḍīva's roar.

इस प्रकार किरीटी ने उन पर अत्याचार किया और जैसे ही वह भयानक मुठभेड़ भड़की, शंख और नगाड़ों की आवाज़ गाण्डीव की दहाड़ से आगे निकल गई।

गाण्डीवशब्दं तमथो विदित्वा; विराटराजप्रमुखा नृवीराः पाञ्चालराजो द्रुपदश्च वीर;स्तं देशमाजग्मुरदीनसत्त्वाः

When they got to know the sound of Gāṇḍīva, the brave ones among men, with King Virāṭa at the forefront, and the valiant King Drupada of Pāñcāla, went to the spot, with uplifted hearts.

जब उन्हें गाण्डीव की ध्वनि का पता चला, तो सबसे आगे राजा विराट और पांचाल के वीर राजा द्रुपद सहित वीर पुरुष, ऊंचे हृदय के साथ उस स्थान पर गए।

सर्वाणि सैन्यानि तु तावकानि; यतो यतो गाण्डिवजः प्रणादः ततस्ततः संनतिमेव जग्मु;र्न तं प्रतीपोऽभिससार कश्चित्

But wherever the sound of Gāṇḍīva was heard, all your soldiers were immersed in despair there and not a single one would venture forth.

परन्तु जहाँ-जहाँ गाण्डीव की ध्वनि सुनाई देती थी, वहाँ-वहाँ आपके सभी सैनिक निराशा में डूब जाते थे और एक भी आगे बढ़ने की हिम्मत नहीं करता था।

तस्मिन्सुघोरे नृपसंप्रहारे; हताः प्रवीराः सरथाः ससूताः गजाश्च नाराचनिपाततप्ता; महापताकाः शुभरुक्मकक्ष्याः

In that extremely terrible slaughter of kings, many brave ones were slain, together with their chariots and charioteers. Elephants were tormented and brought down with iron arrows, with their giant banners and seats made out of pure gold.

राजाओं के उस अत्यंत भयानक संहार में अनेक शूरवीर अपने रथों और सारथियों सहित मारे गये। हाथियों को पीड़ा दी गई और उन्हें लोहे के तीरों से नीचे लाया गया, उनके विशाल बैनर और शुद्ध सोने से बने आसन के साथ।

परीतसत्त्वाः सहसा निपेतुः; किरीटिना भिन्नतनुत्रकायाः दृढाहताः पत्रिभिरुग्रवेगैः; पार्थेन भल्लैर्निशितैः शिताग्रैः

They lost their lives and were suddenly brought down, their bodies mangled by Kirīṭī. Pārtha used a firm hand to bring them down with the force of his sharp, polished and broad-headed arrows.

उनकी जान चली गई और उन्हें अचानक नीचे लाया गया, किरीटी ने उनके शरीर को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया। पार्थ ने अपने तीखे, पॉलिशदार और चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों के बल से उन्हें नीचे गिराने के लिए दृढ़ हाथ का उपयोग किया।

निकृत्तयन्त्रा निहतेन्द्रकीला; ध्वजा महान्तो ध्वजिनीमुखेषु पदातिसंघाश्च रथाश्च संख्ये; हयाश्च नागाश्च धनंजयेन

The implements of war were shattered, the fortifications were destroyed. In that battle, Dhanañjayā brought down large standards and the best of pennants and large numbers of infantry, chariots, horses and elephants.

युद्ध के उपकरण बिखर गये, किलेबंदी नष्ट हो गयी। उस युद्ध में, धनंजय ने बड़े-बड़े ध्वज, सर्वोत्तम पताकाएँ तथा बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सेना, रथ, घोड़े और हाथियों को गिरा दिया।

बाणाहतास्तूर्णमपेतसत्त्वा; विष्टभ्य गात्राणि निपेतुरुर्व्याम् ऐन्द्रेण तेनास्त्रवरेण राज;न्महाहवे भिन्नतनुत्रदेहाः

Struck by the arrows, they lost their lives. Their bodies became immobile and they fell down on the ground. O king! In that great battle, their armour and their bodies were mangled by the supreme weapon named after Indra.

बाणों के प्रहार से उनके प्राण नष्ट हो गये। उनके शरीर स्थिर हो गये और वे भूमि पर गिर पड़े। हे राजा! उस महान युद्ध में, उनके कवच और उनके शरीर इंद्र के नाम के सर्वोच्च हथियार से क्षतिग्रस्त हो गए थे।

ततः शरौघैर्निशितैः किरीटिना; नृदेहशस्त्रक्षतलोहितोदा नदी सुघोरा नरदेहफेना; प्रवर्तिता तत्र रणाजिरे वै

With a flood of sharp arrows, Kirīṭī made an extremely terrible river flow on the field of battle. The blood was the bodies of men wounded by weapons. The foam was human fat.

किरीटी ने तीक्ष्ण बाणों की बाढ़ से युद्धस्थल में अत्यंत भयानक नदी प्रवाहित कर दी। यह खून हथियारों से घायल हुए लोगों के शवों का था। फोम मानव वसा था.

वेगेन सातीव पृथुप्रवाहा; प्रसुस्रुता भैरवारावरूपा परेतनागाश्वशरीररोधा; नरान्त्रमज्जाभृतमांसपङ्का

Its expanse was broad and it flowed swiftly. The banks were formed by the dead bodies of elephants and horses. The mud was the entrails, marrow and flesh of men.

इसका विस्तार व्यापक था और यह तेजी से बहती थी। तट हाथियों और घोड़ों के शवों से बने थे। मिट्टी मनुष्य की अंतड़ियाँ, मज्जा और मांस थी।

प्रभूतरक्षोगणभूतसेविता; शिरःकपालाकुलकेशशाद्वला शरीरसंघातसहस्रवाहिनी; विशीर्णनानाकवचोर्मिसंकुला

Many hordes of rākṣasa-s and demons populated it. The moss was formed by heads, with the hair attached. Thousands of bodies were borne in the flow and the waves were formed by many shattered fragments of armour.

राक्षसों और राक्षसों की बहुत-सी टोलियाँ वहाँ बसी हुई थीं। काई सिरों से बनी थी, जिसमें बाल जुड़े हुए थे। प्रवाह में हजारों शव बह गए और लहरें कवच के कई टूटे हुए टुकड़ों से बनीं।

नराश्वनागास्थिनिकृत्तशर्करा; विनाशपातालवती भयावहा तां कङ्कमालावृतगृध्रकह्वैः; क्रव्यादसंघैश्च तरक्षुभिश्च

The bones of men, horses and elephants were the stones. A large number of crows, jackals, vultures and herons and many predatory beasts like hyenas were seen to line up along its banks, as that terrible and destructive river flowed towards the nether regions.

मनुष्य, घोड़ों और हाथियों की हड्डियाँ ही पत्थर थीं। जब वह भयानक और विनाशकारी नदी पाताल की ओर बहती थी, तो उसके किनारों पर बड़ी संख्या में कौवे, सियार, गिद्ध और बगुले और लकड़बग्घे जैसे कई शिकारी जानवर कतार में खड़े दिखाई देते थे।

उपेतकूलां ददृशुः समन्ता;त्क्रूरां महावैतरणीप्रकाशाम् प्रवर्तितामर्जुनबाणसंघै;र्मेदोवसासृक्प्रवहां सुभीमाम्

That terrible river was as cruel as the great Vaitaraṇī. Created through the masses of Arjuna's arrows, that extremely fearful river conveyed fat, marrow and blood.

वह भयानक नदी महान वैतरणी के समान क्रूर थी। अर्जुन के बाणों की भीड़ से उत्पन्न वह अत्यंत भयानक नदी मेद, मज्जा और रक्त प्रवाहित करती थी।

ते चेदिपाञ्चालकरूषमत्स्याः; पार्थाश्च सर्वे सहिताः प्रणेदुः वित्रास्य सेनां ध्वजिनीपतीनां; सिंहो मृगाणामिव यूथसंघान् विनेदतुस्तावतिहर्षयुक्तौ; गाण्डीवधन्वा च जनार्दनश्च

The Cedi-s, the Pāñcāla-s, the Kārūṣa-s and the Mātsya-s, together with all the Pārtha-s, began to roar. The soldiers and leaders of the army were terrified, like a herd of deer at the sight of a lion. The wielder of the Gāṇḍīva and Janārdana roared in great delight.

चेदि, पंचाल, कारुष और मत्स्य सभी पार्थों सहित दहाड़ने लगे। सेना के सैनिक और नेता सिंह को देखकर हिरणों के झुण्ड के समान भयभीत हो गये। गाण्डीव और जनार्दन को धारण करने वाले अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर गरजे।

ततो रविं संहृतरश्मिजालं; दृष्ट्वा भृशं शस्त्रपरिक्षताङ्गाः तदैन्द्रमस्त्रं विततं सुघोर;मसह्यमुद्वीक्ष्य युगान्तकल्पम्

Their limbs were sorely wounded from the weapon and they saw the sun was withdrawing its rays. They saw that Indra's terrible weapon had extended everywhere and was like the end of a yuga.

हथियार से उनके अंग गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए और उन्होंने देखा कि सूर्य अपनी किरणें वापस ले रहा है। उन्होंने देखा कि इंद्र का भयानक हथियार हर जगह फैल गया था और एक युग के अंत जैसा था।

अथापयानं कुरवः सभीष्माः; सद्रोणदुर्योधनबाह्लिकाश्च चक्रुर्निशां संधिगतां समीक्ष्य; विभावसोर्लोहितराजियुक्ताम्

The Kuru-s, together with Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Duryodhana and Bahlika saw that twilight was near and that the sun was streaked with red. They decided to withdraw.

भीष्म, द्रोण, दुर्योधन और बाह्लीक सहित कौरवों ने देखा कि गोधूलि निकट थी और सूर्य लाल रंग से ढका हुआ था। उन्होंने पीछे हटने का फैसला किया.

अवाप्य कीर्तिं च यशश्च लोके; विजित्य शत्रूंश्च धनंजयोऽपि ययौ नरेन्द्रैः सह सोदरैश्च; समाप्तकर्मा शिबिरं निशायाम् ततः प्रजज्ञे तुमुलः कुरूणां; निशामुखे घोरतरः प्रणादः

Having performed deeds and won fame in the world, Dhanañjayā had triumphed over the enemies. Having completed his tasks, together with his brothers, the lord of men retired to his camp for the night. When night set in, there was a terrible and great uproar among the Kuru-s.

कर्म करके और संसार में ख्याति प्राप्त करके, धनंजय ने शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। अपने कार्यों को पूरा करने के बाद, अपने भाइयों के साथ, मनुष्यों का स्वामी रात के लिए अपने शिविर में चला गया। जब रात हुई तो कौरवों में भयानक और महान उत्पात मच गया।

रणे रथानामयुतं निहत्य; हता गजाः सप्तशतार्जुनेन प्राच्याश्च सौवीरगणाश्च सर्वे; निपातिताः क्षुद्रकमालवाश्च महत्कृतं कर्म धनंजयेन; कर्तुं यथा नार्हति कश्चिदन्यः

"In the battle, Arjuna has killed ten thousand charioteers and seven hundred elephants. All those from the eastern regions, all the masses of Sauvīra-s, the Kṣudraka-s and the Mālavā-s have been brought down. Dhanañjayā has accomplished a great deed. No one else is capable of accomplishing this.

"युद्ध में, अर्जुन ने दस हजार रथियों और सात सौ हाथियों को मार डाला है। पूर्वी क्षेत्रों के सभी लोगों, सौवीरों, क्षुद्रकों और मालवों की पूरी भीड़ को नीचे गिरा दिया गया है। धनंजय ने एक महान कार्य किया है। कोई भी इसे पूरा करने में सक्षम नहीं है।

श्रुतायुरम्बष्ठपतिश्च राजा; तथैव दुर्मर्षणचित्रसेनौ द्रोणः कृपः सैन्धवबाह्लिकौ च; भूरिश्रवाः शल्यशलौ च राजन् स्वबाहुवीर्येण जिताः सभीष्माः; किरीटिना लोकमहारथेन

O king! King Śrutāyu, the lord of Ambaṣṭha, Durmarṣaṇa, Citrasenā, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Saindhava, Bahlika, Bhurishrava, Śalya and Śala, together with Bhīṣma, have been vanquished by Kirīṭī, the mahāratha of the world, through the valour of his own arms."

हे राजा! अंबष्ठ, दुर्मर्षण, चित्रसेन, द्रोण, कृप, सैंधव, बाह्लीक, भूरिश्रवा, शल्य और शल के स्वामी राजा श्रुतायु को भीष्म सहित विश्व के महारथी किरीटी ने परास्त कर दिया है। अपनी ही भुजाओं का पराक्रम।"

इति ब्रुवन्तः शिबिराणि जग्मुः; सर्वे गणा भारत ये त्वदीयाः उल्कासहस्रैश्च सुसंप्रदीप्तै;र्विभ्राजमानैश्च तथा प्रदीपैः किरीटिवित्रासितसर्वयोधा; चक्रे निवेशं ध्वजिनी कुरूणाम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having spoken these words, all those who were on your side went to their camps. There were thousands of torches to bring illumination and many beautiful lamps. All the warriors and leaders among the Kuru-s settled down for the night, terrified of Kirīṭī.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! ये बातें कहकर जितने तुम्हारी ओर थे वे सब अपने डेरों को चले गए। रोशनी लाने के लिए हजारों मशालें और कई सुंदर दीपक थे। कुरुवंश के सभी योद्धा और नेता किरीटी से भयभीत होकर रात्रि विश्राम के लिए वहीं बस गए।
