संजय उवाच ततः पिता तव क्रुद्धो निशितैः सायकोत्तमैः आजघान रणे पार्थान्सहसेनान्समन्ततः

Sañjaya said: "Your father was enraged. In that battle, he used supreme and sharp arrows to pierce the Pārtha-s and their soldiers in every direction.

संजय ने कहा: "तुम्हारे पिता क्रोधित थे। उस युद्ध में, उन्होंने पार्थ-एस और उनके सैनिकों को हर दिशा में छेदने के लिए सर्वोच्च और तेज तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

भीमं द्वादशभिर्विद्ध्वा सात्यकिं नवभिः शरैः नकुलं च त्रिभिर्बाणैः सहदेवं च सप्तभिः

He pierced Bhīmā with twelve arrows and Sātyaki with nine, Nākula with three arrows and Sahadeva with seven.

उन्होंने भीम को बारह बाणों से, सात्यकि को नौ, नकुल को तीन और सहदेव को सात बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

युधिष्ठिरं द्वादशभिर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत् धृष्टद्युम्नं ततो विद्ध्वा विननाद महाबलः

He struck Yudhiṣṭhira with twelve arrows in his chest and arms. The immensely strong one then pierced Dhṛṣṭadyumna and roared.

उसने युधिष्ठिर की छाती और भुजाओं में बारह बाण मारकर घायल कर दिया। तब उस अत्यंत बलशाली ने धृष्टद्युम्न को छेद दिया और गर्जना की।

तं द्वादशार्धैर्नकुलो माधवश्च त्रिभिः शरैः धृष्टद्युम्नश्च सप्तत्या भीमसेनश्च पञ्चभिः युधिष्ठिरो द्वादशभिः प्रत्यविध्यत्पितामहम्

Nākula pierced him with twelve arrows and Mādhava with three. Dhṛṣṭadyumna pierced the grandfather back with seventy arrows, Bhīmasena with five and Yudhiṣṭhira with twelve.

नकुल ने बारह बाणों से और माधव ने तीन बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया। धृष्टद्युम्न ने सत्तर बाणों से, भीमसेन ने पाँच और युधिष्ठिर ने बारह बाणों से पितामह की पीठ को घायल कर दिया।

द्रोणस्तु सात्यकिं विद्ध्वा भीमसेनमविध्यत एकैकं पञ्चभिर्बाणैर्यमदण्डोपमैः शितैः

Having pierced Sātyaki, Droṇa pierced Bhīmasena. He pierced each of them with five sharp arrows that resembled Yāma's staff.

सात्यकि को बींधकर द्रोण ने भीमसेन को बींध डाला। उसने उनमें से प्रत्येक को यम की लाठी के समान पाँच तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तौ च तं प्रत्यविध्येतां त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः तोत्त्रैरिव महानागं द्रोणं ब्राह्मणपुंगवम्

But each of them pierced the bull among brāhmana-s back with three arrows that were straight in their aim and were like giant snakes.

लेकिन उनमें से प्रत्येक ने ब्राह्मण की पीठ पर बैल को तीन तीरों से छेद दिया जो सीधे उनके निशाने पर थे और विशाल सांपों की तरह थे।

सौवीराः कितवाः प्राच्याः प्रतीच्योदीच्यमालवाः अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः संग्रामे नाजहुर्भीष्मं वध्यमानाः शितैः शरैः

The Sauvīra-s, the Kitava-s, those from the east, those from the west, those from the north, the Mālavā-s, the Abhīṣāha-s, the Śūrasena-s, the Śibi-s and the Vasatayas did not avoid Bhīṣma in that battle, though they were slaughtered by his sharp arrows.

सौवीर, कितव, पूर्व के, पश्चिम के, उत्तर के, मालव, अभिसह, शूरसेन, शिबि और वसत्य ने उस युद्ध में भीष्म को नहीं बचाया, हालाँकि वे उनके तीखे बाणों से मारे गए थे।

तथैवान्ये वध्यमानाः पाण्डवेयैर्महात्मभिः पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त विविधायुधपाणयः तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्परिवव्रुः पितामहम्

Other great-souled ones on the side of the Pāṇḍaveya-s were slaughtered. The Pāṇḍava-s were attacked by those who wielded many weapons in their hands. O king! But the Pāṇḍava-s still surrounded the grandfather.

पाण्डवों के पक्ष के अन्य महात्माओं का वध कर दिया गया। पांडवों पर उन लोगों ने हमला किया जिनके हाथों में कई हथियार थे। हे राजा! लेकिन पांडवों ने फिर भी पितामह को घेर लिया।

स समन्तात्परिवृतो रथौघैरपराजितः गहनेऽग्निरिवोत्सृष्टः प्रजज्वाल दहन्परान्

The invincible one was surrounded on all sides by a large number of chariots. Consuming the enemy, he blazed up like a fire engendered in a deserted forest.

वह अजेय चारों ओर से बड़ी संख्या में रथों से घिरा हुआ था। शत्रु को भस्म करते हुए वह निर्जन वन में लगी आग की भाँति प्रज्वलित हो उठा।

रथाग्न्यगारश्चापार्चिरसिशक्तिगदेन्धनः शरस्फुलिङ्गो भीष्माग्निर्ददाह क्षत्रियर्षभान्

His chariot was the source of the fire. The bow, swords, javelins and clubs were the kindling. His arrows were the sparks. Bhīṣma was himself the fire that consumed the bulls among the kṣatriya-s.

उसका रथ आग का स्रोत था। धनुष, तलवारें, भाले और लाठियाँ जल रही थीं। उनके तीर चिनगारियाँ थे। भीष्म स्वयं वह अग्नि थे जिसने क्षत्रियों के बैलों को भस्म कर दिया था।

सुवर्णपुङ्खैरिषुभिर्गार्ध्रपक्षैः सुतेजनैः कर्णिनालीकनाराचैश्छादयामास तद्बलम्

His arrows had golden tufts and the feathers of vultures. They were extremely energetic. He enveloped the enemy force with barbed, hollow and iron arrows.

उनके तीरों में सुनहरे गुच्छे और गिद्धों के पंख थे। वे बेहद ऊर्जावान थे. उसने शत्रु सेना को कंटीले, खोखले और लोहे के बाणों से घेर लिया।

अपातयद्ध्वजांश्चैव रथिनश्च शितैः शरैः मुण्डतालवनानीव चकार स रथव्रजान्

He used sharp arrows to bring down elephants and chariots. That large number of chariots looked like a forest of palm trees with the heads lopped off.

उसने हाथियों और रथों को गिराने के लिए तीखे बाणों का प्रयोग किया। सिर कटे हुए वह विशाल संख्या में रथ ताड़ के वृक्षों के वन के समान प्रतीत होते थे।

निर्मनुष्यान्रथान्राजन्गजानश्वांश्च संयुगे अकरोत्स महाबाहुः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः

O king! In that battle, the mighty-armed one, supreme among all wielders of weapons, deprived chariots, elephants and horses of their riders.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में समस्त शस्त्रधारियों में श्रेष्ठ महाबाहु ने रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को उनके सवारों से वंचित कर दिया।

तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः निशम्य सर्वभूतानि समकम्पन्त भारत

The twang of his bow-string and the slapping of his palms were like the clap of thunder. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the beings were agitated and trembled.

उसके धनुष की प्रत्यंचा की टंकार और उसकी हथेलियों की थाप गड़गड़ाहट की ताल के समान थी। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सभी प्राणी व्याकुल और कांपने लगे।

अमोघा ह्यपतन्बाणाः पितुस्ते भरतर्षभ नासज्जन्त तनुत्रेषु भीष्मचापच्युताः शराः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Your father's arrows were incapable of being countered. Released from Bhīṣma's bow, those arrows did not only strike the armour on the bodies.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! तुम्हारे पिता के बाणों का मुकाबला करने में असमर्थ थे। भीष्म के धनुष से छूटे हुए वे बाण केवल शरीर के कवच पर ही प्रहार नहीं करते थे।

हतवीरान्रथान्राजन्संयुक्ताञ्जवनैर्हयैः अपश्याम महाराज ह्रियमाणान्रणाजिरे

O king! Brave ones were slain on their chariots. O great king! With the swift horses still yoked, we saw them being dragged around all over the field of battle.

हे राजा! शूरवीर अपने रथों पर ही मारे गये। हे महान राजा! तेज़ घोड़ों के जूए अभी भी बंधे हुए थे, हमने देखा कि उन्हें युद्ध के मैदान में चारों ओर घसीटा जा रहा था।

चेदिकाशिकरूषाणां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश महारथाः समाख्याताः कुलपुत्रास्तनुत्यजः अपरावर्तिनः सर्वे सुवर्णविकृतध्वजाः

There were fourteen thousand mahāratha-s from the Cedi-s, the Kāśi-s and the Kārūṣa-s. They were famous, born in noble lineages and were ready to give up their lives. Their standards were decorated with gold and all of them refused to retreat from the field of battle.

सेडिस, काशी और कारूषा से चौदह हजार मराठा थे। वे प्रसिद्ध थे, कुलीन वंश में पैदा हुए थे और अपना जीवन त्यागने के लिए तैयार थे। उनके ध्वजों को सोने से सजाया गया और उन सभी ने युद्ध के मैदान से पीछे हटने से इनकार कर दिया।

संग्रामे भीष्ममासाद्य व्यादितास्यमिवान्तकम् निमग्नाः परलोकाय सवाजिरथकुञ्जराः

They clashed against Bhīṣma in that battle, as if against Death with a gaping mouth. All of them were submerged in the world of the hereafter, together with their horses, chariots and elephants.

वे उस युद्ध में भीष्म के विरुद्ध ऐसे भिड़े, मानो मुँह फुलाए हुए मृत्यु के विरुद्ध हों। वे सभी अपने घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों सहित परलोक में डूब गये।

भग्नाक्षोपस्करान्कांश्चिद्भग्नचक्रांश्च सर्वशः अपश्याम रथान्राजञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

O king! We saw hundreds and thousands of chariots. Some had their floors and axles chattered. Others had completely broken wheels.

हे राजा! हमने सैकड़ों और हजारों रथ देखे। कुछ के फर्श और धुरियाँ चटक रही थीं। अन्य के पहिए पूरी तरह टूट गए थे।

सवरूथै रथैर्भग्नै रथिभिश्च निपातितैः शरैः सुकवचैश्छिन्नैः पट्टिशैश्च विशां पते

The bumpers of the chariots were fragmented and the charioteers were brought down. O lord of the earth! O venerable one! Arrows, excellent armour, spikes,

रथों के बम्पर टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो गये और सारथी नीचे गिर गये। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे आदरणीय! तीर, उत्कृष्ट कवच, शूल,

गदाभिर्मुसलैश्चैव निस्त्रिंशैश्च शिलीमुखैः अनुकर्षैरुपासङ्गैश्चक्रैर्भग्नैश्च मारिष

clubs, maces, swords, arrows with iron heads, the floors of chariots, quivers and wheels were broken and were strewn around.

लाठियाँ, गदाएँ, तलवारें, लोहे के सिर वाले तीर, रथों के फर्श, तरकश और पहिए टूटे हुए थे और चारों ओर बिखरे हुए थे।

बाहुभिः कार्मुकैः खड्गैः शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः तलत्रैरङ्गुलित्रैश्च ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः चापैश्च बहुधा छिन्नैः समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी

There were arms that still held bows and swords. There were heads with earrings. There were palm-guards and finger-guards and standards that had been brought down. There were bows shattered into many fragments. All these were scattered on the ground.

ऐसे हथियार थे जिनमें अभी भी धनुष और तलवारें थीं। बालियों से युक्त सिर थे। ताड़-रक्षक और उंगली-रक्षक और मानक थे जिन्हें नीचे लाया गया था। वहाँ धनुष अनेक खण्डों में टूट गये थे। ये सब जमीन पर बिखरे पड़े थे.

हतारोहा गजा राजन्हयाश्च हतसादिनः परिपेतुर्द्रुतं तत्र शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

O king! There were elephants with the riders slain and horses devoid of riders. They lay there, in hundreds and thousands.

हे राजा! वहाँ मारे गये सवारों सहित हाथी और सवारहीन घोड़े थे। वे वहां सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में पड़े थे।

यतमानाश्च ते वीरा द्रवमाणान्महारथान् नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं भीष्मबाणप्रपीडितान्

The brave ones made every effort to restrain the mahāratha-s who were running away. But they did not succeed, because of the oppression created by Bhīṣma's arrows.

वीरों ने भाग रहे महारथियों को रोकने का हरसंभव प्रयास किया। लेकिन भीष्म के बाणों के अत्याचार के कारण वे सफल नहीं हो सके।

महेन्द्रसमवीर्येण वध्यमाना महाचमूः अभज्यत महाराज न च द्वौ सह धावतः

With valour like that of the great Indra, he slaughtered that large army. O great king! It was destroyed in such a way that no two people ran away together.

उसने महान इन्द्र के समान पराक्रम से उस विशाल सेना का संहार कर डाला। हे महान राजा! इसे इस तरह नष्ट किया गया कि कोई दो लोग एक साथ न भागें.

आविद्धरथनागाश्वं पतितध्वजकूबरम् अनीकं पाण्डुपुत्राणां हाहाभूतमचेतनम्

Chariots, elephants and horses were pierced and standards and seats brought down. There was lamentation in the army of the sons of Pāṇḍu and they lost their senses.

रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को छेद दिया गया और ध्वज और आसन नीचे गिरा दिये गये। पाण्डु पुत्रों की सेना में विलाप मच गया और वे अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे।

जघानात्र पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं तथा प्रियं सखायं चाक्रन्दे सखा दैवबलात्कृतः

Father killed the son and the son killed the father. Driven by the force of destiny, a friend attacked a beloved friend.

पिता ने पुत्र को और पुत्र ने पिता को मार डाला। नियति की शक्ति से प्रेरित होकर, एक मित्र ने अपने प्रिय मित्र पर हमला कर दिया।

विमुच्य कवचानन्ये पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकाः प्रकीर्य केशान्धावन्तः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त भारत

Many soldiers in the army of the sons of Pāṇḍu tore apart their armour. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! With disheveled hair, they were seen to run away.

पाण्डु पुत्रों की सेना के अनेक सैनिकों ने अपने कवच फाड़ डाले। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! बिखरे बालों के साथ वे भागते नजर आए.

तद्गोकुलमिवोद्भ्रान्तमुद्भ्रान्तरथकुञ्जरम् ददृशे पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यमार्तस्वरं तदा

They were like a herd of cattle, crazy with fear and running around. Chariot-riders, elephants and soldiers in the army of the sons of Pāṇḍu were seen to be shrieking in piteous tones.

वे मवेशियों के झुंड की तरह थे, जो डर से पागल थे और इधर-उधर भाग रहे थे। पाण्डुपुत्रों की सेना में रथ-सवार, हाथी और सैनिक करुण स्वर में चिल्लाते देखे गये।

प्रभज्यमानं सैन्यं तु दृष्ट्वा यादवनन्दनः उवाच पार्थं बीभत्सुं निगृह्य रथमुत्तमम्

On seeing that the army was routed, the descendant of the Yādava lineage controlled the supreme chariot and spoke to Pārtha Bībhatsu.

यह देखकर कि सेना हार गई है, यादव वंश के वंशज ने सर्वोच्च रथ को नियंत्रित किया और पार्थ बिभात्सु से बात की।

अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः पार्थ यः काङ्क्षितस्तव प्रहरास्मै नरव्याघ्र न चेन्मोहात्प्रमुह्यसे

"O Pārtha! The moment that you have wished for, has now arrived. O tiger among men! Strike and free yourself from this confusion.

"हे पार्थ! जिस क्षण की तुमने कामना की थी, वह अब आ गया है। हे नर बाघ! प्रहार करो और अपने आप को इस भ्रम से मुक्त करो।

यत्पुरा कथितं वीर त्वया राज्ञां समागमे विराटनगरे पार्थ संजयस्य समीपतः

O brave one! O Pārtha! Earlier, in the assembly of kings, in Virāṭa's city and in Sañjaya's presence, you said,

हे वीर! हे पार्थ! इससे पहले विराट नगर में राजाओं की सभा में और संजय की उपस्थिति में आपने कहा था,

भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकान् सानुबन्धान्हनिष्यामि ये मां योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे

"I will slay all the soldiers in the army of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, with Bhīṣma and Droṇa at the forefront. I will kill them and their followers and all those who fight against me in the battle."

"मैं धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की सेना के सभी सैनिकों को मार डालूँगा, जिसमें सबसे आगे भीष्म और द्रोण होंगे। मैं उन्हें और उनके अनुयायियों तथा उन सभी को मार डालूँगा जो युद्ध में मेरे विरुद्ध लड़ेंगे।"

इति तत्कुरु कौन्तेय सत्यं वाक्यमरिंदम क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मृत्य युध्यस्व भरतर्षभ

O Kaunteya! O destroyer of enemies! Do this and make your words come true. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Remember the dharma of kṣatriya-s and fight."

हे कौन्तेय! हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! ऐसा करो और अपने वचन सत्य करो। हे भरत वंश में बैल! क्षत्रियों का धर्म याद रखो और लड़ो।"

इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन तिर्यग्दृष्टिरधोमुखः अकाम इव बीभत्सुरिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

Thus addressed by Vāsudeva, Bībhatsu lowered his face and cast a sideways glance. As if unwillingly, he spoke these words.

वासुदेव द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर बीभत्सु ने अपना चेहरा नीचे कर लिया और तिरछी नज़र डाली। मानो अनिच्छा से उसने ये शब्द कहे।

अवध्यानां वधं कृत्वा राज्यं वा नरकोत्तरम् दुःखानि वनवासे वा किं नु मे सुकृतं भवेत्

"Having killed those who should not be killed, I will obtain the kingdom, with hell as the ultimate objective. Or is it better to suffer the misery of dwelling in the forest?

"जिन्हें नहीं मारा जाना चाहिए, उन्हें मारकर मैं राज्य प्राप्त करूंगा, जिसका अंतिम लक्ष्य नरक होगा। या क्या जंगल में रहकर दुख भोगना बेहतर है?"

चोदयाश्वान्यतो भीष्मः करिष्ये वचनं तव पातयिष्यामि दुर्धर्षं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम्

Which will be better for me? Drive the horses towards Bhīṣma. I will do what you have asked me to. I will bring down the aged and invincible grandfather of the Kuru-s."

मेरे लिए कौन सा बेहतर होगा? घोड़ों को भीष्म की ओर चलाओ। मैं वही करूँगा जो आपने मुझसे कहा है। मैं कुरु-वंश के वृद्ध और अजेय पितामह को नष्ट कर दूंगा।"

ततोऽश्वान्रजतप्रख्यांश्चोदयामास माधवः यतो भीष्मस्ततो राजन्दुष्प्रेक्ष्यो रश्मिवानिव

At this, Mādhava urged the horses that had the complexion of silver. O king! He took them to the spot where Bhīṣma was, difficult to look at, like the sun with its rays.

इस पर, माधव ने चांदी के रंग वाले घोड़ों का आग्रह किया। हे राजा! वह उन्हें उस स्थान पर ले गया जहाँ भीष्म को देखना कठिन था, जैसे सूरज अपनी किरणों के साथ।

ततस्तत्पुनरावृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् दृष्ट्वा पार्थं महाबाहुं भीष्मायोद्यन्तमाहवे

On seeing the mighty-armed Pārtha ready to fight with Bhīṣma in that battle, Yudhiṣṭhira's large army returned again.

उस युद्ध में महाबाहु पार्थ को भीष्म से युद्ध करने के लिये तैयार देखकर युधिष्ठिर की विशाल सेना पुनः लौट आयी।

ततो भीष्मः कुरुश्रेष्ठः सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः धनंजयरथं शीघ्रं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत्

Bhīṣma, best of the Kuru lineage, roared repeatedly like a lion. He swiftly showered down arrows on Dhanañjayā's chariot.

कुरु वंश में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म सिंह के समान बार-बार दहाड़ते थे। उसने तेजी से धनंजय के रथ पर बाणों की वर्षा की।

क्षणेन स रथस्तस्य सहयः सहसारथिः शरवर्षेण महता न प्राज्ञायत किंचन

In an instant, because of that great shower of arrows, nothing could be seen of the chariot or the charioteer.

क्षण भर में बाणों की उस प्रचण्ड वर्षा के कारण रथ या सारथी का कुछ भी पता नहीं चल सका।

वासुदेवस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो धैर्यमास्थाय सात्वतः चोदयामास तानश्वान्वितुन्नान्भीष्मसायकैः

However, Vāsudeva was without fear. Sātvata resorted to patience and goaded the horses, which had been wounded by Bhīṣma's arrows.

हालाँकि, वासुदेव निडर थे। सात्वत ने धैर्य का सहारा लिया और घोड़ों को उकसाया, जो भीष्म के बाणों से घायल हो गए थे।

ततः पार्थो धनुर्गृह्य दिव्यं जलदनिस्वनम् पातयामास भीष्मस्य धनुश्छित्त्वा शितैः शरैः

Pārtha grasped his divine bow that roared like the clouds. He used sharp arrows to sever Bhīṣma's bow and made it fall down.

पार्थ ने बादलों के समान गर्जना करने वाले अपने दिव्य धनुष को पकड़ लिया। उसने भीष्म के धनुष को तोड़ने के लिए तीखे बाणों का प्रयोग किया और उसे नीचे गिरा दिया।

स च्छिन्नधन्वा कौरव्यः पुनरन्यन्महद्धनुः निमेषान्तरमात्रेण सज्यं चक्रे पिता तव

With the bow severed, Kauravya again grasped a giant bow. In only an instant, your father strung the bow, which made a sound like that of the clouds.

धनुष टूट जाने पर कौरव ने फिर से विशाल धनुष उठा लिया। क्षण भर में ही तुम्हारे पिता ने धनुष पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ायी, जिससे मेघों के समान ध्वनि होने लगी।

विचकर्ष ततो दोर्भ्यां धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम् अथास्य तदपि क्रुद्धश्चिच्छेद धनुरर्जुनः

But in his anger, Arjuna sliced down this second bow too. At this, Śāntanu's son praised his dexterity.

लेकिन क्रोध में आकर अर्जुन ने इस दूसरे धनुष को भी काट डाला। इस पर शांतनु के पुत्र ने उनकी निपुणता की प्रशंसा की।

तस्य तत्पूजयामास लाघवं शंतनोः सुतः साधु पार्थ महाबाहो साधु कुन्तीसुतेति च

"O Pārtha! Well done. O mightyarmed one! O Kuntī's son! Well done."

"हे पार्थ! शाबाश। हे महाबाहु! हे कुन्तीपुत्र! शाबाश।"

समाभाष्यैनमपरं प्रगृह्य रुचिरं धनुः मुमोच समरे भीष्मः शरान्पार्थरथं प्रति

Having thus addressed him, he grasped another beautiful bow. In that battle, Bhīṣma released many arrows towards Pārtha's chariot.

इस प्रकार कहकर उसने एक और सुन्दर धनुष हाथ में ले लिया। उस युद्ध में भीष्म ने पार्थ के रथ की ओर अनेक बाण छोड़े।

अदर्शयद्वासुदेवो हययाने परं बलम् मोघान्कुर्वञ्शरांस्तस्य मण्डलानि विदर्शयन्

Vāsudeva displayed supreme skill in handling the horses. He executed circular motions and avoided all those arrows.

वासुदेव ने घोड़ों को संभालने में सर्वोच्च कौशल दिखाया। उसने गोलाकार गतियाँ कीं और उन सभी तीरों से बचा लिया।

शुशुभाते नरव्याघ्रौ भीष्मपार्थौ शरक्षतौ गोवृषाविव संरब्धौ विषाणोल्लिखिताङ्कितौ

Wounded by arrows, Bhīṣma and Pārtha, tigers among men, looked beautiful. They were like two angry bulls, marked with the signs of horns.

बाणों से घायल हुए भीष्म और पार्थ, नरश्रेष्ठ, सुन्दर लग रहे थे। वे दो क्रोधित बैलों के समान थे, जिन पर सींगों के चिन्ह अंकित थे।

वासुदेवस्तु संप्रेक्ष्य पार्थस्य मृदुयुद्धताम् भीष्मं च शरवर्षाणि सृजन्तमनिशं युधि

Vāsudeva saw that Pārtha was fighting mildly. Bhīṣma was continuously showering down arrows in the battle.

वासुदेव ने देखा कि पार्थ हल्का-हल्का लड़ रहा था। भीष्म युद्ध में लगातार बाणों की वर्षा कर रहे थे।

प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यं मध्यमासाद्य सेनयोः वरान्वरान्विनिघ्नन्तं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकान्

Stationed between the two armies, he was as scorching as the sun. He was killing the best of the best in the army of Pāṇḍu's son.

दोनों सेनाओं के बीच स्थित वह सूर्य के समान झुलसा देने वाला था। वह पांडु के पुत्र की सेना में सर्वश्रेष्ठ लोगों को मार रहा था।

युगान्तमिव कुर्वाणं भीष्मं यौधिष्ठिरे बले नामृष्यत महाबाहुर्माधवः परवीरहा

Against Yudhiṣṭhira's forces, Bhīṣma was like the destruction at the end of a yuga. The mighty-armed Mādhava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, could not tolerate this.

युधिष्ठिर की सेना के विरुद्ध भीष्म एक युग के अंत में विनाश के समान थे। शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाले महाबाहु माधव इसे सहन नहीं कर सके।

उत्सृज्य रजतप्रख्यान्हयान्पार्थस्य मारिष क्रुद्धो नाम महायोगी प्रचस्कन्द महारथात् अभिदुद्राव भीष्मं स भुजप्रहरणो बली

O venerable one! He abandoned Pārtha's horses, which had the complexion of silver. Full of anger, the great yogi descended from the great chariot. The powerful one advanced towards Bhīṣma, with his arms as weapons.

हे आदरणीय! उन्होंने पार्थ के घोड़ों को त्याग दिया, जिनका रंग चांदी जैसा था। क्रोध से भरे हुए, महान योगी महान रथ से उतरे। वह शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति अपनी भुजाओं को हथियार के रूप में लेकर भीष्म की ओर बढ़ा।

प्रतोदपाणिस्तेजस्वी सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः दारयन्निव पद्भ्यां स जगतीं जगतीश्वरः

The spirited one had a whip in his hand and roared repeatedly like a lion. The lord of the universe seemed to make the earth shatter with his footsteps.

उस उत्साही के हाथ में चाबुक था और वह बार-बार शेर की तरह दहाड़ता था। ब्रह्माण्ड का स्वामी अपने कदमों से पृथ्वी को चकनाचूर करता हुआ प्रतीत हो रहा था।

क्रोधताम्रेक्षणः कृष्णो जिघांसुरमितद्युतिः ग्रसन्निव च चेतांसि तावकानां महाहवे

Kṛṣṇā's eyes were coppery red with anger. The infinitely radiant one wished to kill him. In the great battle, those on your side lost their senses.

कृष्ण की आंखें क्रोध से तांबे जैसी लाल थीं। उस अनन्त तेजस्वी ने उसे मार डालना चाहा। इस महान युद्ध में आपके पक्ष के लोग अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठे।

दृष्ट्वा माधवमाक्रन्दे भीष्मायोद्यन्तमाहवे हतो भीष्मो हतो भीष्म इति तत्र स्म सैनिकाः क्रोशन्तः प्राद्रवन्सर्वे वासुदेवभयान्नराः

They saw Mādhava advance against Bhīṣma in that battle, as if he would swallow him up. "Bhīṣma has been slain. Bhīṣma has been slain." Such lamentations were uttered by the soldiers. All the men were frightened at the sight of Vāsudeva advancing.

उन्होंने उस युद्ध में माधव को भीष्म के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ते देखा, मानो वह उसे निगल जाएगा। "भीष्म मारे गए। भीष्म मारे गए।" इस प्रकार का विलाप सैनिकों द्वारा किया गया। वासुदेव को आगे बढ़ता देख सभी लोग भयभीत हो गये।

पीतकौशेयसंवीतो मणिश्यामो जनार्दनः शुशुभे विद्रवन्भीष्मं विद्युन्माली यथाम्बुदः

Janārdana was dressed in yellow garments. He was dark blue, like a jewel. As he advanced against Bhīṣma, he was as beautiful as a cloud with a garland of lightning.

जनार्दन पीले वस्त्र पहने हुए थे। वह गहरे नीले रंग का था, किसी रत्न की तरह। जैसे ही वह भीष्म के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा, वह बिजली की माला पहने बादल के समान सुंदर हो गया।

स सिंह इव मातङ्गं यूथर्षभ इवर्षभम् अभिदुद्राव तेजस्वी विनदन्यादवर्षभः

It was like a lion advancing on an elephant, or the leader of a herd advancing against another bull. The spirited bull among the Yādava lineage roared and advanced.

यह ऐसा था जैसे एक शेर हाथी पर आगे बढ़ रहा हो, या एक झुंड का नेता दूसरे बैल के खिलाफ आगे बढ़ रहा हो। यादव वंश का उत्साही बैल दहाड़ता हुआ आगे बढ़ा।

तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य पुण्डरीकाक्षमाहवे असंभ्रमं रणे भीष्मो विचकर्ष महद्धनुः उवाच चैनं गोविन्दमसंभ्रान्तेन चेतसा

On seeing Puṇḍarīkākṣa descend on him in the battle, Bhīṣma was not frightened. He stretched his great bow in the encounter and addressed Govinda without any fear in his heart.

युद्ध में पुण्डरीकाक्ष को अपने ऊपर आते देख भीष्म भयभीत नहीं हुए। उन्होंने मुठभेड़ में अपना महान धनुष बढ़ाया और बिना किसी डर के गोविंदा को संबोधित किया।

एह्येहि पुण्डरीकाक्ष देवदेव नमोऽस्तु ते मामद्य सात्वतश्रेष्ठ पातयस्व महाहवे

"O Puṇḍarīkākṣa! Come. O god of the gods! I bow down before you. O best of the Sātvata lineage! Bring me down in this great battle.

"हे पुण्डरीकाक्ष! आओ। हे देवों के देव! मैं तुम्हारे सामने झुकता हूं। हे सात्वत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! मुझे इस महान युद्ध में नीचे लाओ।

त्वया हि देव संग्रामे हतस्यापि ममानघ श्रेय एव परं कृष्ण लोकेऽमुष्मिन्निहैव च संभावितोऽस्मि गोविन्द त्रैलोक्येनाद्य संयुगे

O god! O unblemished one! Slain by you in this battle, I will obtain supreme welfare in this world and in the next world. O Govinda! In the three worlds, I have obtained great honour in the battle today."

रब्बा बे! हे निष्कलंक! इस युद्ध में तुम्हारे द्वारा मारा जाकर मुझे इस लोक और परलोक में परम कल्याण प्राप्त होगा। हे गोविंद! आज युद्ध में मुझे तीनों लोकों में बड़ा सम्मान प्राप्त हुआ है।”

अन्वगेव ततः पार्थस्तमनुद्रुत्य केशवम् निजग्राह महाबाहुर्बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्य वै

The mighty-armed Pārtha ran after Keśava and embraced him in his two arms.

महाबाहु पार्थ केशव के पीछे दौड़े और उन्हें अपनी दोनों भुजाओं से गले लगा लिया।

निगृह्यमाणः पार्थेन कृष्णो राजीवलोचनः जगाम चैनमादाय वेगेन पुरुषोत्तमः

But despite being grasped by Pārtha, the lotus-eyed Puruṣottama Kṛṣṇā still proceeded with great force, dragging him along.

लेकिन पार्थ द्वारा पकड़ लिए जाने के बावजूद, कमल-नेत्र पुरुषोत्तम कृष्ण अभी भी बड़ी ताकत से आगे बढ़े, और उसे अपने साथ खींच लिया।

पार्थस्तु विष्टभ्य बलाच्चरणौ परवीरहा निजघ्राह हृषीकेशं कथंचिद्दशमे पदे

Pārtha, the destroyer of enemy heroes, now grasped Hṛṣīkeśa's legs with force and managed to stop him at the tenth step.

शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाले पार्थ ने अब हृषीकेश के पैरों को बल से पकड़ लिया और दसवें कदम पर उन्हें रोकने में सफल रहे।

तत एनमुवाचार्तः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणम् निःश्वसन्तं यथा नागमर्जुनः परवीरहा

His eyes were full of rage and he was sighing like a serpent. Arjuna, the destroyer of enemy heroes, spoke these words of distress to him.

उसकी आँखें क्रोध से भरी हुई थीं और वह साँप की भाँति आहें भर रहा था। शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाले अर्जुन ने उनसे ये कष्टयुक्त वचन कहे।

निवर्तस्व महाबाहो नानृतं कर्तुमर्हसि यत्त्वया कथितं पूर्वं न योत्स्यामीति केशव

"O mighty-armed one! Refrain. You should not do this. O Keśava! You earlier said that you would not fight in this war.

"हे महाबाहु! रुको। तुम्हें ऐसा नहीं करना चाहिए। हे केशव! तुमने पहले कहा था कि तुम इस युद्ध में नहीं लड़ोगे।"

मिथ्यावादीति लोकस्त्वां कथयिष्यति माधव ममैष भारः सर्वो हि हनिष्यामि यतव्रतम्

O Mādhava! The world will say that you have uttered a falsehood. Let the entire burden be on me. I will kill the one who is rigid in his vows.

हे माधव! दुनिया कहेगी कि तुमने झूठ बोला है। सारा भार मुझ पर रहने दो। जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पर अटल है, उसे मैं मार डालूँगा।

शपे माधव सख्येन सत्येन सुकृतेन च अन्तं यथा गमिष्यामि शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शन

O Mādhava! If it is otherwise in this battle, let there be a curse on my truth and my good deeds. O destroyer of enemies! I will do everything so that the end of the foes is ensured. Behold.

हे माधव! यदि इस युद्ध में अन्यथा है, तो मेरे सत्य और मेरे अच्छे कर्मों पर लानत हो। हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! मैं सब कुछ करूँगा जिससे शत्रुओं का अंत सुनिश्चित हो सके। देखो.

अद्यैव पश्य दुर्धर्षं पात्यमानं महाव्रतम् तारापतिमिवापूर्णमन्तकाले यदृच्छया

As I wish, I will bring down the invincible one who is great in his vows today, like the full moon at the end of an erā."

जैसी मेरी इच्छा है, मैं आज उस अजेय को, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में महान है, युग के अंत में पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा की तरह नीचे गिरा दूंगा।"

माधवस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा फल्गुनस्य महात्मनः नकिंचिदुक्त्वा सक्रोध आरुरोह रथं पुनः

Mādhava heard these words of the great-souled Phālguna. He did not say anything. But in great rage, he again ascended onto the chariot.

माधव ने महात्मा फाल्गुन के ये शब्द सुने। उसने कुछ भी नहीं कहा। लेकिन बड़े क्रोध में वह फिर रथ पर चढ़ गया।

तौ रथस्थौ नरव्याघ्रौ भीष्मः शांतनवः पुनः ववर्ष शरवर्षेण मेघो वृष्ट्या यथाचलौ

Those two tigers among men were stationed on the chariot. Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, again showered down arrows, like clouds raining down on a mountain.

वे दोनों नर बाघ रथ पर तैनात थे। शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने फिर बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे बादल पर्वत पर बरस रहे हों।

प्राणांश्चादत्त योधानां पिता देवव्रतस्तव गभस्तिभिरिवादित्यस्तेजांसि शिशिरात्यये

Your father, Devavrata, took the lives of the warriors, like the rays of the sun absorb energy from everything after winter has passed.

आपके पिता देवव्रत ने योद्धाओं की जान ले ली, जैसे सर्दी बीतने के बाद सूर्य की किरणें हर चीज से ऊर्जा सोख लेती हैं।

यथा कुरूणां सैन्यानि बभञ्ज युधि पाण्डवः तथा पाण्डवसैन्यानि बभञ्ज युधि ते पिता

Just as the Pāṇḍava-s had shattered the ranks of the Kuru-s in battle, your father shattered the ranks of the Pāṇḍava soldiers in battle.

जिस प्रकार युद्ध में पांडवों ने कुरु सैनिकों की सेना को छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया था, उसी प्रकार आपके पिता ने भी युद्ध में पांडव सैनिकों की सेना को छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया था।

हतविद्रुतसैन्यास्तु निरुत्साहा विचेतसः निरीक्षितुं न शेकुस्ते भीष्ममप्रतिमं रणे मध्यं गतमिवादित्यं प्रतपन्तं स्वतेजसा

The soldiers were slain and routed. They lost their enterprise and were bereft of their senses. In that battle, they were incapable of looking at Bhīṣma. Scorching them with his own energy, he was like the midday sun.

सैनिक मारे गए और मार गिराए गए। उन्होंने अपना उद्यम खो दिया और अपनी इंद्रियों से वंचित हो गए। उस युद्ध में, वे भीष्म की ओर देखने में असमर्थ थे। वह उन्हें अपनी ऊर्जा से झुलसा रहा था, वह दोपहर के सूरज की तरह था।

ते वध्यमाना भीष्मेण कालेनेव युगक्षये वीक्षां चक्रुर्महाराज पाण्डवा भयपीडिताः

They were slain by Bhīṣma, as if he was Death at the time of the destruction of a yuga. O great king! The Pāṇḍava-s were afflicted with fear and glanced at him.

वे भीष्म द्वारा ऐसे मारे गये, मानो वे किसी युग के विनाश के समय मृत्यु हों। हे महान राजा! पांडव भय से पीड़ित हो गए और उनकी ओर देखने लगे।

त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त गावः पङ्कगता इव पिपीलिका इव क्षुण्णा दुर्बला बलिना रणे

They could not find a protector, like cattle that had sunk into mire. In the battle, they were like weak ants afflicted by a strong person.

कीचड़ में धँसे हुए मवेशियों की तरह उन्हें कोई रक्षक नहीं मिला। युद्ध में वे बलवान व्यक्ति से पीड़ित कमजोर चींटियों के समान थे।

महारथं भारत दुष्प्रधर्षं; शरौघिणं प्रतपन्तं नरेन्द्रान् भीष्मं न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुं ते; शरार्चिषं सूर्यमिवातपन्तम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The mahāratha was unassailable. He scorched the kings with his arrows. They were incapable of looking at Bhīṣma. His arrows scorched like the rays of the sun.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! महारथ अजेय था। उसने अपने बाणों से राजाओं को झुलसा दिया। वे भीष्म की ओर देखने में असमर्थ थे। उसके बाण सूर्य की किरणों के समान झुलसाने वाले थे।

विमृद्नतस्तस्य तु पाण्डुसेना;मस्तं जगामाथ सहस्ररश्मिः ततो बलानां श्रमकर्शितानां; मनोऽवहारं प्रति संबभूव

While the soldiers of the Pāṇḍu-s were routed, the one with the thousand rays began to set. The soldiers were overcome by fatigue. Their hearts were set on withdrawing.

जब पाण्डु-सैनिकों को मार गिराया गया, तो सहस्र किरणों वाला वह अस्त होने लगा। सैनिक थकान से व्याकुल थे। उनके दिल पीछे हटने को तैयार थे।
