संजय उवाच ततस्ते पार्थिवाः क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनं वीक्ष्य संयुगे रथैरनेकसाहस्रैः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्

Sañjaya said: "The kings were angry and saw Phālguna in that battle. They surrounded him on all sides with many thousands of chariots.

संजय ने कहा: "राजा क्रोधित थे और उन्होंने फाल्गुन को उस युद्ध में देखा। उन्होंने हजारों रथों के साथ उसे चारों तरफ से घेर लिया।

अथैनं रथवृन्देन कोष्टकीकृत्य भारत शरैः सुबहुसाहस्रैः समन्तादभ्यवारयन्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having surrounded him with a large number of chariots, they enveloped him in all directions with many thousands of arrows.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने बड़ी संख्या में रथों के साथ उसे घेर लिया और हजारों बाणों से उसे सभी दिशाओं में घेर लिया।

शक्तीश्च विमलास्तीक्ष्णा गदाश्च परिघैः सह प्रासान्परश्वधांश्चैव मुद्गरान्मुसलानपि चिक्षिपुः समरे क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति

Enraged in battle, they hurled polished and sharp lances, clubs, maces, javelins, battleaxes, bludgeons and pestles towards Phālguna's chariot.

युद्ध में क्रोधित होकर, उन्होंने फाल्गुन के रथ की ओर पॉलिश और तेज भाले, क्लब, गदा, भाले, कुल्हाड़ी, डंडे और मूसल फेंके।

शस्त्राणामथ तां वृष्टिं शलभानामिवायतिम् रुरोध सर्वतः पार्थः शरैः कनकभूषणैः

That shower of weapons descended on him like a flight of locusts. But Pārtha countered all of them with gold-decorated arrows.

हथियारों की वह वर्षा टिड्डियों के दल के समान उन पर पड़ी। लेकिन पार्थ ने उन सभी का मुकाबला सोने से सजाये हुए बाणों से किया।

तत्र तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा बीभत्सोरतिमानुषम् देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः साधु साध्विति राजेन्द्र फल्गुनं प्रत्यपूजयन्

O Indra among kings! On witnessing Bībhatsu's superhuman lightness of hand, the gods, the dānava-s, the gāndharva-s, the piśāca-s, the serpents and the rākṣasa-s honoured Phālguna with words of praise.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! बीभत्सु के हाथ की अलौकिक चमक को देखकर देवताओं, दानवों, गंधर्वों, पिशाचों, नागों और राक्षसों ने फाल्गुन को प्रशंसा के शब्दों से सम्मानित किया।

सात्यकिं चाभिमन्युं च महत्या सेनया सह गान्धाराः समरे शूरा रुरुधुः सहसौबलाः

With a large army and together with Saubala, the brave ones from the land of Gāndhāra surrounded Sātyaki and Abhimanyu in that battle.

गांधार देश के वीरों ने सौबल सहित बड़ी सेना लेकर उस युद्ध में सात्यकि और अभिमन्यु को घेर लिया।

तत्र सौबलकाः क्रुद्धा वार्ष्णेयस्य रथोत्तमम् तिलशश्चिच्छिदुः क्रोधाच्छस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्युधि

With many different kinds of weapons, the angry ones who were on Saubala's side wrathfully cut down Vārṣṇeya's supreme chariot into tiny fragments.

सौबल के पक्ष के क्रोधियों ने अनेक प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से वारष्णेय के परम रथ को क्रोधपूर्वक छोटे-छोटे टुकड़ों में काट डाला।

सात्यकिस्तु रथं त्यक्त्वा वर्तमाने महाभये अभिमन्यो रथं तूर्णमारुरोह परंतपः

In that extremely fearful battle, Sātyaki abandoned his chariot and the scorcher of enemies swiftly ascended onto Abhimanyu's chariot.

उस अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध में सात्यकि ने अपना रथ त्याग दिया और शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाला वह योद्धा तेजी से अभिमन्यु के रथ पर चढ़ गया।

तावेकरथसंयुक्तौ सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम् व्यधमेतां शितैस्तूर्णं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः

Stationed on the same chariot, they swiftly countered Saubala's army and pierced it with many sharp and straight-tufted arrows.

एक ही रथ पर खड़े होकर, उन्होंने तेजी से सौबाला की सेना का मुकाबला किया और उसे कई तेज और सीधे-नुकीले बाणों से छेद दिया।

द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ धर्मराजस्य वाहिनीम् नाशयेतां शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः

In that battle, Droṇa and Bhīṣma made endeavours to fight with Dharmarāja's army. They destroyed it with sharp arrows tufted with the feathers of herons.

उस युद्ध में द्रोण और भीष्म ने धर्मराज की सेना से लड़ने का प्रयास किया। उन्होंने बगुलों के पंखों वाले तीखे बाणों से उसे नष्ट कर दिया।

ततो धर्मसुतो राजा माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ मिषतां सर्वसैन्यानां द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवन्

In the sight of all the soldiers, the king who was Dharma's son and the Pāṇḍava-s who were Mādrī's sons began to oppress Droṇa's army.

सभी सैनिकों की दृष्टि में, राजा जो धर्म के पुत्र थे और पांडव-जो माद्री के पुत्र थे, द्रोण की सेना पर अत्याचार करने लगे।

तत्रासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् यथा देवासुरं युद्धं पूर्वमासीत्सुदारुणम्

The great battle that was fought was tumultuous and made the body hair stand up. It was like the extremely terrible battle that was earlier fought between the gods and the āsura-s.

जो महान युद्ध लड़ा गया वह उथल-पुथल भरा था और शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। यह अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध जैसा था जो पहले देवताओं और असुरों के बीच लड़ा गया था।

कुर्वाणौ तु महत्कर्म भीमसेनघटोत्कचौ दुर्योधनस्ततोऽभ्येत्य तावुभावभ्यवारयत्

Bhīmasena and Ghaṭotkaca performed extremely great deeds. Then Duryodhana arrived and repulsed both of them.

भीमसेन और घटोत्कच ने अत्यंत महान कार्य किये। तभी दुर्योधन ने आकर उन दोनों को खदेड़ दिया।

तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम हैडिम्बस्य पराक्रमम् अतीत्य पितरं युद्धे यदयुध्यत भारत

We witnessed the valour displayed by Hiḍimbā's son and it was extraordinary. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When he fought, he surpassed his father in battle.

हमने हिडिम्बा के बेटे द्वारा प्रदर्शित वीरता देखी और यह असाधारण था। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब वह लड़ा, तो उसने युद्ध में अपने पिता को पीछे छोड़ दिया।

भीमसेनस्तु संक्रुद्धो दुर्योधनममर्षणम् हृद्यविध्यत्पृषत्केन प्रहसन्निव पाण्डवः

Pāṇḍava Bhīmasena was enraged. He smiled and pierced the intolerant Duryodhana in the chest with an arrow.

पाण्डव भीमसेन क्रोधित हो गये। उन्होंने मुस्कुराकर असहिष्णु दुर्योधन की छाती में बाण से छेद कर दिया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा प्रहारवरमोहितः निषसाद रथोपस्थे कश्मलं च जगाम ह

At this, King Duryodhana lost his senses from this blow. He sank down on his chariot and fainted.

इस पर राजा दुर्योधन इस प्रहार से मूर्छित हो गया। वह अपने रथ पर गिर पड़ा और बेहोश हो गया।

तं विसंज्ञमथो ज्ञात्वा त्वरमाणोऽस्य सारथिः अपोवाह रणाद्राजंस्ततः सैन्यमभिद्यत

O king! On seeing that he had lost his senses, the charioteer swiftly carried him away from the field of battle and his soldiers ran away.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि वह मूर्छित हो गया है, सारथी ने तेजी से उसे युद्ध के मैदान से दूर ले जाया और उसके सैनिक भाग गए।

ततस्तां कौरवीं सेनां द्रवमाणां समन्ततः निघ्नन्भीमः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैरनुवव्राज पृष्ठतः

While the Kaurava soldiers were running away in all directions, Bhīmā pursued them and killed them with sharp arrows.

जब कौरव सैनिक सभी दिशाओं में भाग रहे थे, तब भीम ने उनका पीछा किया और उन्हें तीखे बाणों से मार डाला।

पार्षतश्च रथश्रेष्ठो धर्मपुत्रश्च पाण्डवः द्रोणस्य पश्यतः सैन्यं गाङ्गेयस्य च पश्यतः जघ्नतुर्विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैः परानीकविशातनैः

In Droṇa's sight and in the sight of Gāṅgeya, Pārṣata, foremost among charioteers, and the Pāṇḍava who was Dharma's son began to slaughter their soldiers with sharp and straight-tufted arrows that were capable of killing the enemy.

द्रोण की दृष्टि में और गांगेय की दृष्टि में, सारथियों में अग्रणी परशात, और पांडव जो धर्म के पुत्र थे, ने अपने सैनिकों को तीखे और सीधे-नुकीले बाणों से मारना शुरू कर दिया जो दुश्मन को मारने में सक्षम थे।

द्रवमाणं तु तत्सैन्यं तव पुत्रस्य संयुगे नाशक्नुतां वारयितुं भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ

In that battle, the soldiers of your sons started to run away. O lord of the earth! Mahāratha Bhīṣma and Droṇa were incapable of restraining them.

उस युद्ध में आपके पुत्रों के सैनिक भागने लगे। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! महारथी भीष्म और द्रोण उन्हें रोकने में असमर्थ थे।

वार्यमाणं हि भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च विशां पते विद्रवत्येव तत्सैन्यं पश्यतोर्द्रोणभीष्मयोः

Though Bhīṣma and Droṇa tried to restrain them, the soldiers fled while both Droṇa and Bhīṣma looked on.

हालाँकि भीष्म और द्रोण ने उन्हें रोकने की कोशिश की, लेकिन सैनिक भाग गए जबकि द्रोण और भीष्म दोनों देखते रहे।

ततो रथसहस्रेषु विद्रवत्सु ततस्ततः तावास्थितावेकरथं सौभद्रशिनिपुंगवौ सौबलीं समरे सेनां शातयेतां समन्ततः

Thousands of chariots fled in all directions. Subhadrā's son and the bull among Śini-s were stationed on a single chariot. In that battle, in every direction, they began to slaughter the soldiers of Saubala.

हजारों रथ सभी दिशाओं में भाग गये। सुभद्रा का पुत्र और शिनि-संगठन का बैल एक ही रथ पर सवार थे। उस युद्ध में वे हर दिशा में सौबाला के सैनिकों का संहार करने लगे।

शुशुभाते तदा तौ तु शैनेयकुरुपुंगवौ अमावास्यां गतौ यद्वत्सोमसूर्यौ नभस्तले

Śini's descendant and the bull among the Kuru-s were resplendent, like two suns in the firmament after the night of the new moon had passed.

शिनि के वंशज और कुरु के बीच का बैल अमावस्या की रात बीत जाने के बाद आकाश में दो सूर्यों की तरह देदीप्यमान थे।

अर्जुनस्तु ततः क्रुद्धस्तव सैन्यं विशां पते ववर्ष शरवर्षेण धाराभिरिव तोयदः

O lord of the earth! Arjuna angrily showered down arrows on the soldiers, like clouds pouring down rain.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! अर्जुन ने क्रोधपूर्वक सैनिकों पर बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे बादल वर्षा करते हैं।

वध्यमानं ततस्तत्तु शरैः पार्थस्य संयुगे दुद्राव कौरवं सैन्यं विषादभयकम्पितम्

Thus slaughtered in that battle with Pārtha's arrows, the Kaurava soldiers were overcome by sorrow and fright and trembled and ran away.

इस प्रकार युद्ध में पार्थ के बाणों से मारे गये कौरव सैनिक दुःख और भय से पीड़ित हो गये और काँपकर भाग गये।

द्रवतस्तान्समालोक्य भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ न्यवारयेतां संरब्धौ दुर्योधनहितैषिणौ

On seeing that the soldiers were running away, mahāratha Bhīṣma and Droṇa, became angry and having Duryodhana's welfare in mind, tried to restrain them.

यह देखकर कि सैनिक भाग रहे हैं, महारथी भीष्म और द्रोण क्रोधित हो गए और दुर्योधन के हित को ध्यान में रखते हुए उन्हें रोकने की कोशिश की।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा समाश्वस्य विशां पते न्यवर्तयत तत्सैन्यं द्रवमाणं समन्ततः

O lord of the earth! At this, King Duryodhana himself reassured the troops and restrained them from running away in every direction.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! इस पर राजा दुर्योधन ने स्वयं सैनिकों को आश्वस्त किया और उन्हें हर दिशा में भागने से रोका।

यत्र यत्र सुतं तुभ्यं यो यः पश्यति भारत तत्र तत्र न्यवर्तन्त क्षत्रियाणां महारथाः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Wherever your son could be seen, there the mahāratha kṣatriya-s were restrained.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जहाँ भी आपके पुत्र को देखा जा सकता था, वहाँ महारथी क्षत्रियों को रोक दिया गया था।

तान्निवृत्तान्समीक्ष्यैव ततोऽन्येऽपीतरे जनाः अन्योन्यस्पर्धया राजँल्लज्जयान्येऽवतस्थिरे

O king! Wherever they were restrained, the ordinary soldiers saw them and were also restrained, ashamed and desiring to rival each other.

हे राजा! जहाँ भी उन्हें रोका गया, वहाँ सामान्य सैनिकों ने उन्हें देखा और वे भी संयमित, शर्मिंदा और एक-दूसरे से प्रतिस्पर्धा करने की इच्छा कर रहे थे।

पुनरावर्ततां तेषां वेग आसीद्विशां पते पूर्यतः सागरस्येव चन्द्रस्योदयनं प्रति

O lord of the earth! That army was thus forcefully rallied and looked like a full ocean when the moon rises.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! इस प्रकार वह सेना बलपूर्वक एकत्रित हो गई और चंद्रमा के उदय होने पर भरे हुए समुद्र के समान दिखाई देने लगी।

संनिवृत्तांस्ततस्तांस्तु दृष्ट्वा राजा सुयोधनः अब्रवीत्त्वरितो गत्वा भीष्मं शांतनवं वचः

Having seen that the army had been rallied, King Suyodhana swiftly went to Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, and spoke these words to him.

यह देखकर कि सेना एकत्र हो गई है, राजा सुयोधन तेजी से शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म के पास गए और उनसे ये शब्द बोले।

पितामह निबोधेदं यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि भारत नानुरूपमहं मन्ये त्वयि जीवति कौरव

"O grandfather! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Listen to the words I am speaking to you. O Kaurava! I do not think it is praiseworthy

"हे पितामह! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जो शब्द मैं तुमसे कह रहा हूं, उसे सुनो। हे कौरव! मुझे नहीं लगता कि यह प्रशंसनीय है।"

द्रोणे चास्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठे सपुत्रे ससुहृज्जने कृपे चैव महेष्वासे द्रवतीयं वरूथिनी

that when you are alive, and so is Droṇa, supreme among those who are skilled in weapons, together with his son and well-wishers, and so is the great archer Kṛpa,

कि जब तुम जीवित हो, और द्रोण भी, अपने पुत्रों और शुभचिंतकों सहित, अस्त्र-शस्त्रविद्या में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं, और महान धनुर्धर कृप भी जीवित हैं,

न पाण्डवाः प्रतिबलास्तव राजन्कथंचन तथा द्रोणस्य संग्रामे द्रौणेश्चैव कृपस्य च

should my soldiers flee in this way. I do not think that the Pāṇḍava-s are a force capable of withstanding you in battle, or Droṇa, or Droṇa's son, or Kṛpa.

क्या मेरे सैनिक इसी प्रकार भाग जाएं? मुझे नहीं लगता कि पांडव, या द्रोण, या द्रोण के पुत्र, या कृपा, युद्ध में आपका सामना करने में सक्षम कोई शक्ति हैं।

अनुग्राह्याः पाण्डुसुता नूनं तव पितामह यथेमां क्षमसे वीर वध्यमानां वरूथिनीम्

O grandfather! The Pāṇḍava-s are certainly being favoured by you. O brave one! That is the reason you are pardoning them this act of killing my soldiers.

हे दादा! पाण्डव निःसंदेह आपके कृपा पात्र हैं। हे वीर! यही कारण है कि आप मेरे सैनिकों को मारने के उनके इस कृत्य को क्षमा कर रहे हैं।

सोऽस्मि वाच्यस्त्वया राजन्पूर्वमेव समागमे न योत्स्ये पाण्डवान्संख्ये नापि पार्षतसात्यकी

O king! You should have told me earlier, before this encounter commenced, that you would not fight in a battle with the Pāṇḍava-s, or with Pārṣata, or with Sātyaki.

हे राजा! आपको यह मुठभेड़ शुरू होने से पहले ही मुझे बता देना चाहिए था, कि आप पांडवों के साथ, या परशत के साथ, या सात्यकि के साथ युद्ध में नहीं लड़ेंगे।

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तुभ्यमाचार्यस्य कृपस्य च कर्णेन सहितः कृत्यं चिन्तयानस्तदैव हि

On hearing your words and those of the preceptor and of Kṛpa, together with Karṇa, I would then have reflected on what should be done.

आपकी, गुरु की, कृपा की और कर्ण की बातें सुनकर मैंने विचार किया कि क्या करना चाहिए।

यदि नाहं परित्याज्यो युवाभ्यामिह संयुगे विक्रमेणानुरूपेण युध्येतां पुरुषर्षभौ

O bulls among men! If I do not deserve to be abandoned by both of you in this battle, then fight in accordance with your valour."

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! यदि मैं इस युद्ध में तुम दोनों द्वारा त्यागे जाने योग्य नहीं हूँ तो अपनी वीरता के अनुसार युद्ध करो।”

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो भीष्मः प्रहसन्वै मुहुर्मुहुः अब्रवीत्तनयं तुभ्यं क्रोधादुद्वृत्य चक्षुषी

Having heard these words, Bhīṣma laughed repeatedly. His eyes were full of anger and he spoke these words to your son.

ये बातें सुनकर भीष्म बार-बार हँसे। उनकी आँखें क्रोध से भरी थीं और उन्होंने आपके पुत्र से ये शब्द कहे।

बहुशो हि मया राजंस्तथ्यमुक्तं हितं वचः अजेयाः पाण्डवा युद्धे देवैरपि सवासवैः

"O king! On many occasions, I have spoken words for your welfare and you should have accepted them. The Pāṇḍava-s are incapable of being vanquished in battle even by the gods, together with Vāsava.

"हे राजा! कई अवसरों पर, मैंने आपके कल्याण के लिए शब्द कहे हैं और आपको उन्हें स्वीकार करना चाहिए था। पांडव वासव सहित देवताओं द्वारा भी युद्ध में पराजित होने में असमर्थ हैं।

यत्तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं वृद्धेनाद्य नृपोत्तम करिष्यामि यथाशक्ति प्रेक्षेदानीं सबान्धवः

O supreme among kings! Though I am aged now, I will do what I am capable of doing and I will do it to the best of my capacity. Behold it with your relatives.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! हालाँकि अब मैं वृद्ध हो गया हूँ, फिर भी मैं वही करूँगा जो मैं करने में सक्षम हूँ और अपनी सर्वोत्तम क्षमता से करूँगा। इसे अपने रिश्तेदारों के साथ देखें.

अद्य पाण्डुसुतान्सर्वान्ससैन्यान्सह बन्धुभिः मिषतो वारयिष्यामि सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः

While all the worlds look on, I will alone repulse the sons of Pāṇḍu now, together with their soldiers and relatives."

जबकि सारी दुनिया देख रही है, अब मैं अकेला ही पांडु के पुत्रों को, उनके सैनिकों और रिश्तेदारों सहित, खदेड़ दूंगा।"

एवमुक्ते तु भीष्मेण पुत्रास्तव जनेश्वर दध्मुः शङ्खान्मुदा युक्ता भेरीश्च जघ्निरे भृशम्

O lord of men! Having been thus addressed by Bhīṣma, your son was extremely delighted and instructed that conch shells and drums should be sounded.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! भीष्म द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर आपका पुत्र अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ और उसने शंख और नगाड़े बजाने का निर्देश दिया।

पाण्डवापि ततो राजञ्श्रुत्वा तं निनदं महत् दध्मुः शङ्खांश्च भेरीश्च मुरजांश्च व्यनादयन्

O king! Having heard this loud roar, the Pāṇḍava-s blew on their conch shells and instructed that drums and tambourines should be sounded.

हे राजा! इस तीव्र गर्जना को सुनकर पांडवों ने शंख बजाये और ढोल और डफ बजाने का निर्देश दिया।
