संजय उवाच व्युष्टां निशां भारत भारताना;मनीकिनीनां प्रमुखे महात्मा ययौ सपत्नान्प्रति जातकोपो; वृतः समग्रेण बलेन भीष्मः

Sañjaya said: O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When night had passed, the great-souled Bhīṣma was full of anger. Placing himself at the head of the Bhārata army and surrounded by a large number of troops, he advanced against the enemy.

संजय ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब रात्रि बीत गई तो महाबली भीष्म क्रोध से भर गये। स्वयं को भारत सेना का नेतृत्व करते हुए और बड़ी संख्या में सैनिकों से घिरे हुए, वह शत्रु के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े।

तं द्रोणदुर्योधनबाह्लिकाश्च; तथैव दुर्मर्षणचित्रसेनौ जयद्रथश्चातिबलो बलौघै;र्नृपास्तथान्येऽनुययुः समन्तात्

Droṇa, Duryodhana, Bahlika, Durmarṣaṇa, Citrasenā and the extremely strong Jayadratha, and many other powerful kings with their armies, surrounded him on all sides.

द्रोण, दुर्योधन, बाह्लीक, दुर्मर्षण, चित्रसेन और अत्यंत बलशाली जयद्रथ तथा अन्य कई शक्तिशाली राजाओं ने अपनी सेनाओं के साथ उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

स तैर्महद्भिश्च महारथैश्च; तेजस्विभिर्वीर्यवद्भिश्च राजन् रराज राजोत्तम राजमुख्यै;र्वृतः स देवैरिव वज्रपाणिः

O king! Surrounded by these great mahāratha-s, all of whom possessed energy and valour, that supreme of kings was radiant at the forefront of those kings, like the wielder of the vajra when he is surrounded by the gods.

हे राजा! उन सभी महारथियों से घिरा हुआ, जिनके पास ऊर्जा और वीरता थी, राजाओं का सर्वोच्च उन राजाओं में सबसे आगे चमक रहा था, जैसे वज्रधारी जब देवताओं से घिरा होता है।

तस्मिन्ननीकप्रमुखे विषक्ता; दोधूयमानाश्च महापताकाः सुरक्तपीतासितपाण्डुराभा; महागजस्कन्धगता विरेजुः

Giant standards fluttered on the backs of mighty elephants stationed in front of the troops. They were beautiful and colourful—red, yellow, black and brown.

सैनिकों के सामने खड़े शक्तिशाली हाथियों की पीठ पर विशाल ध्वज लहरा रहे थे। वे सुंदर और रंगीन थे - लाल, पीले, काले और भूरे।

That army had the king who was Śāntanu's son, mahāratha-s, elephants and horses. It was as dazzling as clouds tinged with lightning, or the sky when clouds gather at the onset of the monsoon.

उस सेना में शांतनु के पुत्र राजा, महारथ, हाथी और घोड़े थे। यह वैसा ही चकाचौंध था जैसे बिजली से चमकते बादल, या जब मानसून की शुरुआत में बादल इकट्ठा हो जाते हैं तो आकाश चमक उठता है।

ततो रणायाभिमुखी प्रयाता; प्रत्यर्जुनं शांतनवाभिगुप्ता सेना महोग्रा सहसा कुरूणां; वेगो यथा भीम इवापगायाः

Protected by Śāntanu's son, that great and large army of the Kuru-s suddenly rushed towards Arjuna to do battle, like a terrible and flowing river.

शांतनु के पुत्र द्वारा संरक्षित, कुरु-वंश की वह महान और बड़ी सेना अचानक एक भयानक और बहती हुई नदी की तरह युद्ध करने के लिए अर्जुन की ओर दौड़ पड़ी।

तं व्यालनानाविधगूढसारं; गजाश्वपादातरथौघपक्षम् व्यूहं महामेघसमं महात्मा; ददर्श दूरात्कपिराजकेतुः

It possessed diverse kinds of powerful forces, with innumerable elephants, horses, infantry and chariots along the sides. The vyūha was like a giant cloud. From a distance, the great-souled one with the king of apes on his standard saw it.

इसके पास असंख्य हाथी, घोड़े, पैदल सेना और रथों के साथ विभिन्न प्रकार की शक्तिशाली सेनाएँ थीं। व्यूह एक विशाल बादल के समान था। दूर से, वानरों के राजा के साथ खड़े महान आत्मा ने इसे देखा।

The brave bull among men, with the white horses, was stationed on his chariot with the tall standard. The great-souled one was at the head of a large army and advanced against all the forces of the enemy.

मनुष्यों में वीर बैल, श्वेत घोड़ों के साथ, ऊँचे झंडे वाले अपने रथ पर तैनात था। वह महान आत्मा एक बड़ी सेना का नेतृत्व कर रहा था और दुश्मन की सभी सेनाओं के खिलाफ आगे बढ़ रहा था।

सूपस्करं सोत्तरबन्धुरेषं; यत्तं यदूनामृषभेण संख्ये कपिध्वजं प्रेक्ष्य विषेदुराजौ; सहैव पुत्रैस्तव कौरवेयाः

He possessed excellent equipment and the shaft of the chariot was supreme. In that battle, he was aided by the bull among the Yadu-s. On seeing the ape on the standard, all the Kaurava-s, together with your sons, were dejected.

उसके पास उत्कृष्ट उपकरण थे और रथ का शाफ्ट सर्वोच्च था। उस युद्ध में यदुओं के बीच बैल ने उनकी सहायता की थी। उस वानर को ध्वज पर देखकर आपके पुत्रों सहित समस्त कौरव निराश हो गये।

प्रकर्षता गुप्तमुदायुधेन; किरीटिना लोकमहारथेन तं व्यूहराजं ददृशुस्त्वदीया;श्चतुश्चतुर्व्यालसहस्रकीर्णम्

They saw that the king of vyūha-s was protected by Kirīṭī, the mahāratha of this world, with his weapons upraised. There were four thousand elephants at each of its four corners.

उन्होंने देखा कि व्यूह के राजा की रक्षा इस संसार के महारथी किरीटी ने अपने हथियार उठाए हुए की थी। इसके चारों कोनों पर चार-चार हजार हाथी थे।

यथा हि पूर्वेऽहनि धर्मराज्ञा; व्यूहः कृतः कौरवनन्दनेन तथा तथोद्देशमुपेत्य तस्थुः; पाञ्चालमुख्यैः सह चेदिमुख्याः

This vyūha was like the one that had been prepared the preceding day by Dharmarāja, the descendant of the Kaurava lineage. The foremost among the Pāñcāla-s and the foremost among the Cedi-s advanced towards the spot.

यह व्यूह वैसा ही था जैसा कौरव वंश के वंशज धर्मराज ने पिछले दिन तैयार किया था। पंचालों में सबसे अग्रणी और सेडिस में सबसे अग्रणी स्थान की ओर आगे बढ़े।

ततो महावेगसमाहतानि; भेरीसहस्राणि विनेदुराजौ शङ्खस्वना दुन्दुभिनिस्वनाश्च; सर्वेष्वनीकेषु ससिंहनादाः

A great roar arose from every direction and thousands of drums were sounded. There was the blowing of conch shells, mixed with the sounds of drums. All the soldiers roared like lions.

हर दिशा से एक बड़ी गर्जना उठी और हजारों नगाड़े बजने लगे। ढोल की ध्वनि के साथ शंख की ध्वनि भी बज रही थी। सभी सैनिक सिंह के समान दहाड़ने लगे।

ततः सबाणानि महास्वनानि; विस्फार्यमाणानि धनूंषि वीरैः क्षणेन भेरीपणवप्रणादा;नन्तर्दधुः शङ्खमहास्वनाश्च

As the brave ones twanged their bows, there was the great sound of arrows. In an instant, the sky was filled with the loud sound of drums, kettledrums and cymbals and the great noise of conch shells being blown.

जैसे ही वीरों ने अपने धनुषों को टटोला, बाणों की महान ध्वनि होने लगी। एक पल में, आकाश ढोल, नगाड़े, झांझ की तेज आवाज और शंख बजाने के महान शोर से भर गया।

तच्छङ्खशब्दावृतमन्तरिक्ष;मुद्धूतभौमद्रुतरेणुजालम् महावितानावततप्रकाश;मालोक्य वीराः सहसाभिपेतुः

Enveloped in that sound, the sky was also covered by fine dust that arose from the ground. On seeing that canopy spread all over, the brave warriors dashed forwards to battle each other.

उस ध्वनि में आकाश भी भूमि से उठी महीन धूल से आच्छादित हो गया। चारों ओर उस छत्रछाया को फैला हुआ देखकर वीर योद्धा एक-दूसरे से युद्ध करने के लिए आगे बढ़े।

रथी रथेनाभिहतः ससूतः; पपात साश्वः सरथः सकेतुः गजो गजेनाभिहतः पपात; पदातिना चाभिहतः पदातिः

Rāṭha-s were brought down by rāṭha-s, together with their charioteers, horses, chariots and standards. Elephants were struck and brought down by elephants. Infantry was brought down by infantry.

रथों को उनके सारथियों, घोड़ों, रथों और ध्वजों सहित रथों द्वारा नीचे गिरा दिया गया। हाथियों को हाथियों ने मारकर गिरा दिया। पैदल सेना को पैदल सेना द्वारा नीचे लाया गया।

आवर्तमानान्यभिवर्तमानै;र्बाणैः क्षतान्यद्भुतदर्शनानि प्रासैश्च खड्गैश्च समाहतानि; सदश्ववृन्दानि सदश्ववृन्दैः

Those who advanced were brought down by others who advanced. The wounds from the arrows were wonderful to behold. Lances and swords fell down. Well-trained horses clashed against well-trained horses.

The brave ones held excellent shields marked with the signs of golden stars and used them against excellent arrows. These were shattered by battleaxes, lances and swords and fell down on the ground.

वीर लोग सुनहरे तारों के चिन्हों से अंकित उत्कृष्ट ढालें ​​रखते थे और उनका उपयोग उत्कृष्ट बाणों के विरुद्ध करते थे। वे फरसों, भालों और तलवारों से चकनाचूर हो गये और भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

Some rāṭha-s and their charioteers were mangled by the tusks and mighty trunks of elephants and fell down. Bulls among elephant-riders clashed against bulls among rāṭha-s and killed by arrows, fell down on the ground.

कुछ रथ और उनके सारथी हाथियों के दाँतों और शक्तिशाली सूंडों से क्षत-विक्षत हो गये और नीचे गिर गये। हाथी सवारों के बीच के बैल रथ-सवारों के बीच के बैलों से भिड़ गए और तीरों से मारे गए, जमीन पर गिर पड़े।

गजौघवेगोद्धतसादितानां; श्रुत्वा निषेदुर्वसुधां मनुष्याः आर्तस्वरं सादिपदातियूनां; विषाणगात्रावरताडितानाम्

Having heard the wails of horse-riders struck by the force of elephants or the lamentations of horse-riders and infantry whose limbs were crushed by the tusks of elephants, many men were distressed and fell down.

हाथियों के बल से मारे गये घुड़सवारों का विलाप अथवा हाथियों के दाँतों से कुचले हुए घुड़सवारों तथा पैदल सैनिकों का विलाप सुनकर बहुत से मनुष्य व्यथित होकर गिर पड़ते थे।

संभ्रान्तनागाश्वरथे प्रसूते; महाभये सादिपदातियूनाम् महारथैः संपरिवार्यमाणं; ददर्श भीष्मः कपिराजकेतुम्

Many elephants, horses and chariots were running away and there was a great terror among the horse-riders and infantry. Bhīṣma, surrounded by mahāratha-s, saw the one who had the king of apes on his standard.

बहुत से हाथी, घोड़े और रथ भाग रहे थे और घुड़सवारों तथा पैदल सैनिकों में बड़ा भय व्याप्त था। भीष्म ने, महारथियों से घिरे हुए, उसे देखा जिसके ध्वज पर वानरों का राजा था।

तं पञ्चतालोच्छ्रिततालकेतुः; सदश्ववेगोद्धतवीर्ययातः महास्त्रबाणाशनिदीप्तमार्गं; किरीटिनं शांतनवोऽभ्यधावत्

Śāntanu's son had a palm tree on his standard, embellished with the marks of five palm trees. He rushed against the valiant Kirīṭī, who possessed well-trained and swift horses and great weapons and arrows with the resplendence of the vajra.

O king! Many other warriors, with Droṇa, Kṛpa, Śalya, Viviṃśati, Duryodhana and Somadatta's son at the forefront, advanced against Indra's son, who was like Śākra himself.

हे राजा! द्रोण, कृप, शल्य, विविंशति, दुर्योधन और सोमदत्त के पुत्र के साथ कई अन्य योद्धा, सबसे आगे, इंद्र के पुत्र के खिलाफ आगे बढ़े, जो स्वयं शक्र जैसा था।

ततो रथानीकमुखादुपेत्य; सर्वास्त्रवित्काञ्चनचित्रवर्मा जवेन शूरोऽभिससार सर्वां;स्तथार्जुनस्यात्र सुतोऽभिमन्युः

Arjuna's brave son, Abhimanyu, was skilled in the knowledge of all weapons and was clad in golden and colourful armour. He rushed out from the mās-s of rāṭha-s and attacked.

अर्जुन का बहादुर पुत्र, अभिमन्यु, सभी हथियारों के ज्ञान में कुशल था और सुनहरे और रंगीन कवच पहने हुए था। वह राठ-एस के मास से बाहर निकला और हमला कर दिया।

He confounded the great weapons of all those mahāratha-s. Kārṣṇi performed deeds that were incapable of being countered. He was like the illustrious fire on a sacrificial altar, when the one with the flames has been invoked with great mantra-s.

In that battle, the spirited Bhīṣma swiftly created a river, with the blood of enemies as the foam. But he avoided Subhadrā's son and attacked mahāratha Pārtha.

The supreme among all wielders of the bow, with the king of apes on his standard, then showered down a net of arrows and polished and broad-headed arrows on the great-souled Bhīṣma.

All the worlds, the Kuru-s and the Sṛñjaya-s, witnessed the duel between Bhīṣma and Dhanañjayā, the two spirited ones who were the foremost among virtuous men, accompanied by the terrible roars of the bows.
