संजय उवाच वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे राजन्वीरवरक्षये शकुनिः सौबलः श्रीमान्पाण्डवान्समुपाद्रवत्

Sañjaya said: O king! When that terrible destruction of brave ones was going on, the illustrious Śākuni Saubala attacked the Pāṇḍava-s.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! जब वीरों का भयानक विनाश हो रहा था, तब महाबली शकुनि सौबल ने पांडवों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

तथैव सात्वतो राजन्हार्दिक्यः परवीरहा अभ्यद्रवत संग्रामे पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्

O king! Hārdikya Sātvata, the destroyer of enemy heroes, attacked the army of the Pāṇḍava-s in that encounter. Pāṇḍava's brave powerful son, the scorcher of enemies, attacked your soldiers in a cheerful frame of mind.

हे राजा! शत्रु नायकों का संहार करने वाले हार्दिक सात्वत ने उस मुठभेड़ में पांडवों की सेना पर हमला किया। शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले पाण्डव के वीर शक्तिशाली पुत्र ने प्रसन्नचित्त होकर आपके सैनिकों पर आक्रमण किया।

ततः काम्बोजमुख्यानां नदीजानां च वाजिनाम् आरट्टानां महीजानां सिन्धुजानां च सर्वशः

He possessed the foremost of speedy horses, the best of those from Kāmboja and from the land of the rivers, those from Āraṭṭa, Mahī, Sindhu,

उसके पास सबसे तेज़ चलने वाले घोड़े थे, कम्बोज और नदियों की भूमि से आए, अराट, माही, सिंधु, से सबसे अच्छे घोड़े थे।

वनायुजानां शुभ्राणां तथा पर्वतवासिनाम् ये चापरे तित्तिरजा जवना वातरंहसः

white ones from Vanāyu and others from mountainous regions. There were other swift ones of the Tittira breed.

श्वेत वनायु से और अन्य पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों से। टिटिरा नस्ल के अन्य तेज तर्रार भी थे।

सुवर्णालंकृतैरेतैर्वर्मवद्भिः सुकल्पितैः हयैर्वातजवैर्मुख्यैः पाण्डवस्य सुतो बली अभ्यवर्तत तत्सैन्यं हृष्टरूपः परंतपः

They were as swift as the wind.They were armoured and ornamented in gold. They were trained well. The powerful son of the Pāṇḍava, looking delighted and tormenting his enemies, advanced towards that army with these excellent horses

वे हवा के समान तेज़ थे। वे कवचधारी और सोने से अलंकृत थे। उन्हें अच्छे से प्रशिक्षित किया गया. शक्तिशाली पांडव पुत्र प्रसन्न होकर और अपने शत्रुओं को पीड़ा पहुँचाते हुए, इन उत्कृष्ट घोड़ों के साथ उस सेना की ओर बढ़े।

अर्जुनस्याथ दायाद इरावान्नाम वीर्यवान् सुतायां नागराजस्य जातः पार्थेन धीमता

This brave son of Arjuna was named Irāvat. He was born from the intelligent Pārtha and was the son of the daughter of the king of the nāga-s.

अर्जुन के इस वीर पुत्र का नाम इरावत था। वह बुद्धिमान पार्थ से पैदा हुआ था और नागों के राजा की बेटी का बेटा था।

ऐरावतेन सा दत्ता अनपत्या महात्मना पत्यौ हते सुपर्णेन कृपणा दीनचेतना

When her husband was slain by Suparṇa, she was distressed and depressed in her mind. She was also childless and was bestowed by the great-souled Airavat

जब उसके पति को सुपर्णा ने मार डाला, तो वह मन में व्यथित और उदास थी। वह भी नि:संतान थी और उसे महाबली ऐरावत ने वरदान दिया था

भार्यार्थं तां च जग्राह पार्थः कामवशानुगाम् एवमेष समुत्पन्नः परक्षेत्रेऽर्जुनात्मजः

She was overcome by the pangs of desire and Pārtha accepted her as his wife. Thus it was that Arjuna's son was born in another one's field.

वह इच्छा की पीड़ा से उबर गई और पार्थ ने उसे अपनी पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार कर लिया। इस प्रकार अर्जुन के पुत्र का जन्म दूसरे के खेत में हुआ।

स नागलोके संवृद्धो मात्रा च परिरक्षितः पितृव्येण परित्यक्तः पार्थद्वेषाद्दुरात्मना

Protected by his mother, he grew up in the world of the nāga-s. Because of his hatred for Pārtha, his evil-souled uncle abandoned him.

अपनी माँ द्वारा संरक्षित, वह नागाओं की दुनिया में बड़ा हुआ। पार्थ के प्रति घृणा के कारण उसके दुष्टात्मा चाचा ने उसे त्याग दिया।

रूपवान्वीर्यसंपन्नो गुणवान्सत्यविक्रमः इन्द्रलोकं जगामाशु श्रुत्वा तत्रार्जुनं गतम्

He was handsome and brave and possessed all the qualities. Truth was his valour. He quickly went to Indra's world when he heard that Arjuna had gone there.

वह सुन्दर एवं वीर था तथा सभी गुणों से सम्पन्न था। सत्य उनकी वीरता थी. जब उसने सुना कि अर्जुन वहाँ गया है तो वह तुरन्त इन्द्र के लोक में गया।

सोऽभिगम्य महात्मानं पितरं सत्यविक्रमम् अभ्यवादयदव्यग्रो विनयेन कृताञ्जलिः इरावानस्मि भद्रं ते पुत्रश्चाहं तवाभिभो

The one for whom truth was his valour, went to his great-souled father. He anxiously bowed before him. Joining his hands in salutation, he humbly said, "'O fortunate one! O lord! I am Irāvat. I am your son."

जिसके लिए सत्य ही उसकी वीरता थी, वह अपने महात्मा पिता के पास गया। वह उत्सुकता से उसके सामने झुक गया। हाथ जोड़कर प्रणाम करते हुए उसने विनम्रतापूर्वक कहा, "हे भाग्यशाली! हे प्रभु! मैं इरावत हूं। मैं आपका पुत्र हूं।"

मातुः समागमो यश्च तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् तच्च सर्वं यथावृत्तमनुसस्मार पाण्डवः

He told Pāṇḍava everything and reminded him of the circumstances about how he had met with his mother.

उसने पांडव को सब कुछ बताया और उन परिस्थितियों की याद दिलाई कि कैसे वह अपनी माँ से मिला था।

परिष्वज्य सुतं चापि सोऽऽत्मनः सदृशं गुणैः प्रीतिमानभवत्पार्थो देवराजनिवेशने

He embraced his son, who was exactly like him in all the qualities. In the abode of the king of the gods, Pārtha was delighted.

उन्होंने अपने बेटे को गले लगा लिया, जो सभी गुणों में बिल्कुल उनके जैसा ही था। देवताओं के राजा के निवास में पार्थ प्रसन्न थे।

सोऽर्जुनेन समाज्ञप्तो देवलोके तदा नृप प्रीतिपूर्वं महाबाहुः स्वकार्यं प्रति भारत युद्धकाले त्वयास्माकं साह्यं देयमिति प्रभो

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The mighty-armed Arjuna then commanded him in the world of the gods and affectionately told him about his duty. "Come to us when it is the time for war."

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! तब महाबाहु अर्जुन ने उन्हें देवताओं के लोक में आज्ञा दी और स्नेहपूर्वक उनके कर्तव्य के बारे में बताया। "जब युद्ध का समय हो तो हमारे पास आओ।"

बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा च युद्धकाल उपागतः कामवर्णजवैरश्वैः संवृतो बहुभिर्नृप

O lord! He agreed and went away. In accordance with those words, he presented himself, since the time for battle has come.

हे भगवान! वह मान गया और चला गया. उन शब्दों के अनुसार, उसने स्वयं को प्रस्तुत किया, क्योंकि युद्ध का समय आ गया था।

ते हयाः काञ्चनापीडा नानावर्णा मनोजवाः उत्पेतुः सहसा राजन्हंसा इव महोदधौ

O king! He was surrounded by many swift horses, with all the complexions that one desires. Those horses bore golden harnesses and were of many hues. They were as swift as thought.

हे राजा! वह कई तेज घोड़ों से घिरा हुआ था, उनके सभी रंग-रूप ऐसे थे जो कोई भी चाहता है। वे घोड़े सुनहरे हार पहने हुए थे और अनेक रंगों के थे। वे उतने ही तेज़ थे जितना सोचा जाता था।

ते त्वदीयान्समासाद्य हयसंघान्महाजवान् क्रोडैः क्रोडानभिघ्नन्तो घोणाभिश्च परस्परम् निपेतुः सहसा राजन्सुवेगाभिहता भुवि

O king! They suddenly arrived and were like swans in the great ocean. They attacked the large numbers of your horses, which were also exceedingly fast. They struck each other on the chests and on the noses. O king! Those extremely swift horses suddenly fell down on the ground.

हे राजा! वे अचानक आये और विशाल महासागर में हंसों के समान थे। उन्होंने बड़ी संख्या में आपके घोड़ों पर हमला किया, जो बहुत तेज़ भी थे। उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की छाती और नाक पर प्रहार किया। हे राजा! वे अत्यंत तेज़ घोड़े अचानक ज़मीन पर गिर पड़े।

निपतद्भिस्तथा तैश्च हयसंघैः परस्परम् शुश्रुवे दारुणः शब्दः सुपर्णपतने यथा

Those masses of horses clashed against each other and were shattered and fell down. An extremely terrible sound was heard, like that when Suparṇa descends.

घोड़ों का वह समूह आपस में भिड़ गया और चकनाचूर होकर गिर पड़ा। अत्यंत भयानक ध्वनि सुनाई दी, जैसे सुपर्ण के उतरते समय होती है।

तथैव च महाराज समेत्यान्योन्यमाहवे परस्परवधं घोरं चक्रुस्ते हयसादिनः

O great king! Thus it was that they clashed against each other in the battle. The horse-riders fiercely began to kill each other.

हे महान राजा! इस प्रकार युद्ध में वे एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गये। घुड़सवार एक-दूसरे को भयंकर मार-काट करने लगे।

तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने संकुले तुमुले भृशम् उभयोरपि संशान्ता हयसंघाः समन्ततः

A tumultuous and fearful encounter raged. On both sides, large numbers of horses dashed around in all directions.

एक उथल-पुथल भरी और भयावह मुठभेड़ हुई। दोनों ओर से बड़ी संख्या में घोड़े सभी दिशाओं में दौड़ पड़े।

प्रक्षीणसायकाः शूरा निहताश्वाः श्रमातुराः विलयं समनुप्राप्तास्तक्षमाणाः परस्परम्

The brave ones were mutilated with arrows. The horses were slain. They were overcome with exhaustion. They began to diminish in number, destroying each other with their swords.

वीरों को बाणों से क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया गया। घोड़े मारे गये। वे थकावट से उबर चुके थे। उनकी संख्या कम होने लगी और वे एक-दूसरे को अपनी तलवारों से नष्ट करने लगे।

ततः क्षीणे हयानीके किंचिच्छेषे च भारत सौबलस्यात्मजाः शूरा निर्गता रणमूर्धनि

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When the armies of horses were whittled away and only a few were left, Saubala's brave younger brothers rode out in the forefront of that battle.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब घोड़ों की सेनाएं कम हो गईं और केवल कुछ ही बचे थे, तो सौबाला के बहादुर छोटे भाई उस लड़ाई में सबसे आगे निकल गए।

वायुवेगसमस्पर्शा जवे वायुसमांस्तथा आरुह्य शीलसंपन्नान्वयःस्थांस्तुरगोत्तमान्

They were astride supreme horses that were like the touch of the wind in their speed. They were as fleet as the wind. They were well-trained and not too old or young.

वे सर्वोच्च घोड़ों पर सवार थे जिनकी गति हवा के स्पर्श के समान थी। वे वायु के समान बेड़े थे। वे अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित थे और बहुत बूढ़े या जवान नहीं थे।

गजो गवाक्षो वृषकश्चर्मवानार्जवः शुकः षडेते बलसंपन्ना निर्ययुर्महतो बलात्

Those six were powerful—Gaja, Gavākṣa, Vṛṣaka, Carmavat, Ārjava and Śuka. They advanced with a great army

वे छह शक्तिशाली थे- गज, गवाक्ष, वृषक, कर्मवत, आर्जव और शुक। वे एक विशाल सेना के साथ आगे बढ़े

वार्यमाणाः शकुनिना स्वैश्च योधैर्महाबलैः संनद्धा युद्धकुशला रौद्ररूपा महाबलाः

They were supported by Śākuni and their own extremely strong warriors. They were armoured and skilled in battle. They were terrible in form and extremely strong.

उन्हें शकुनि और उनके अपने अत्यंत शक्तिशाली योद्धाओं का समर्थन प्राप्त था। वे हथियारबंद और युद्ध में कुशल थे। वे भयंकर रूप वाले और अत्यंत बलशाली थे।

तदनीकं महाबाहो भित्त्वा परमदुर्जयम् बलेन महता युक्ताः स्वर्गाय विजयैषिणः विविशुस्ते तदा हृष्टा गान्धारा युद्धदुर्मदाः

O mighty-armed one! With that extremely large army, desiring heaven and victory, they penetrated that supremely invincible army. Unassailable in battle, those from Gāndhāra cheerfully entered there.

हे महाबाहु! स्वर्ग और विजय की इच्छा से वे उस अत्यंत विशाल सेना के साथ उस परम अजेय सेना में घुस गये। युद्ध में अपराजेय गांधारवासी प्रसन्नतापूर्वक वहाँ प्रविष्ट हुए।

तान्प्रविष्टांस्तदा दृष्ट्वा इरावानपि वीर्यवान् अब्रवीत्समरे योधान्विचित्राभरणायुधान्

On seeing that they had cheerfully penetrated, the valiant Irāvat spoke to his own warriors, who were adorned with colourful ornaments and weapons in that battle.

यह देखकर कि वे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक प्रवेश कर चुके हैं, वीर इरावत ने अपने योद्धाओं से बात की, जो उस युद्ध में रंग-बिरंगे आभूषणों और हथियारों से सुसज्जित थे।

यथैते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य योधाः सानुगवाहनाः हन्यन्ते समरे सर्वे तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम्

"Act according to the decreed policy, so that all the warriors of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra can be killed in this battle, together with their followers and their mounts."

"निर्धारित नीति के अनुसार कार्य करें, ताकि धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के सभी योद्धा अपने अनुयायियों और उनके घुड़सवारों सहित इस युद्ध में मारे जा सकें।"

बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा ते सर्वे योधा इरावतः जघ्नुस्ते वै परानीकं दुर्जयं समरे परैः

Agreeing, all of Irāvat's warriors began to slay the ranks of the enemy, though the enemy was invincible in battle.

सहमत होते हुए, इरावत के सभी योद्धाओं ने दुश्मन के रैंकों को मारना शुरू कर दिया, हालांकि दुश्मन युद्ध में अजेय था।

तदनीकमनीकेन समरे वीक्ष्य पातितम् अमृष्यमाणास्ते सर्वे सुबलस्यात्मजा रणे इरावन्तमभिद्रुत्य सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्

On witnessing that their ranks were being brought down in that battle, all of Subala's sons could not tolerate this state of affairs in the encounter. All of them attacked and surrounded Irāvat.

यह देखकर कि उस युद्ध में उनकी सेना नीचे गिर रही थी, सुबाला के सभी पुत्र मुठभेड़ में इस स्थिति को सहन नहीं कर सके। उन सभी ने इरावत पर हमला कर दिया और उसे घेर लिया।

ताडयन्तः शितैः प्रासैश्चोदयन्तः परस्परम् ते शूराः पर्यधावन्त कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम्

They incited each other to attack him with sharp lances. The brave ones dashed around and created a great melee.

उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को तेज भालों से उस पर हमला करने के लिए उकसाया। बहादुर चारों ओर दौड़ पड़े और जबरदस्त हाथापाई की।

इरावानथ निर्भिन्नः प्रासैस्तीक्ष्णैर्महात्मभिः स्रवता रुधिरेणाक्तस्तोत्त्रैर्विद्ध इव द्विपः

The great-souled Irāvat was pierced by those sharp lances. Blood began to flow from his body and he looked like an elephant wounded by a goad.

उन तीक्ष्ण भालों से महाबली इरावत घायल हो गये। उसके शरीर से रक्त बहने लगा और वह किसी डंडे से घायल हाथी के समान दिखने लगा।

उरस्यपि च पृष्ठे च पार्श्वयोश्च भृशाहतः एको बहुभिरत्यर्थं धैर्याद्राजन्न विव्यथे

He was severely wounded on his chest, his back and his sides. O king! He was alone and faced many. But he was not distressed and did not lose his fortitude.

उसकी छाती, पीठ और बाजू पर गंभीर घाव थे। हे राजा! वह अकेला था और उसे कई लोगों का सामना करना पड़ा। परन्तु वह व्यथित नहीं हुआ और उसने अपना धैर्य नहीं खोया।

इरावानथ संक्रुद्धः सर्वांस्तान्निशितैः शरैः मोहयामास समरे विद्ध्वा परपुरंजयः

Irāvat was enraged in that battle. The destroyer of enemy cities confounded all of them by piercing them with sharp arrows.

उस युद्ध में इरावत क्रोधित हो गया। शत्रु नगरों को नष्ट करने वाले ने उन सबको पैने बाणों से बींधकर स्तब्ध कर दिया।

प्रासानुद्धृत्य सर्वांश्च स्वशरीरादरिंदमः तैरेव ताडयामास सुबलस्यात्मजान्रणे

The scorcher of enemies uprooted all the lances from his own body and used them to strike Subala's sons in that battle.

शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले उस शूरवीर ने अपने शरीर से सारे भाले उखाड़ लिये और उनसे युद्ध में सुबाला के पुत्रों पर वार किया।

निकृष्य निशितं खड्गं गृहीत्वा च शरावरम् पदातिस्तूर्णमागच्छज्जिघांसुः सौबलान्युधि

He unsheathed a sharp sword and grasped a shield. He swiftly advanced on foot, wishing to kill Subala's sons in that encounter.

उसने एक तेज़ तलवार निकाली और एक ढाल पकड़ ली। वह उस मुठभेड़ में सुबाला के पुत्रों को मारने की इच्छा से तेजी से पैदल आगे बढ़ा।

ततः प्रत्यागतप्राणाः सर्वे ते सुबलात्मजाः भूयः क्रोधसमाविष्टा इरावन्तमथाद्रवन्

Having regained their senses, all of Subala's sons became angry and advanced against Irāvat.

होश में आने के बाद, सुबाला के सभी पुत्र क्रोधित हो गए और इरावत के खिलाफ आगे बढ़ गए।

इरावानपि खड्गेन दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् अभ्यवर्तत तान्सर्वान्सौबलान्बलदर्पितः

But displaying the dexterity of his hands with the sword and proud of his strength, Irāvat attacked all those sons of Subala.

लेकिन तलवार से अपने हाथों की निपुणता दिखाते हुए और अपनी ताकत पर गर्व करते हुए, इरावत ने सुबाला के उन सभी पुत्रों पर हमला किया।

लाघवेनाथ चरतः सर्वे ते सुबलात्मजाः अन्तरं नाध्यगच्छन्त चरन्तः शीघ्रगामिनः

He roamed around with such great speed, that Subala's sons, though they were on fleet horses, could not find an opportunity to strike him.

वह इतनी तेज गति से इधर-उधर घूमता था कि सुबाला के पुत्र, हालांकि वे बेड़े के घोड़ों पर थे, उन्हें उस पर हमला करने का मौका नहीं मिल सका।

भूमिष्ठमथ तं संख्ये संप्रदृश्य ततः पुनः परिवार्य भृशं सर्वे ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमुः

However, in that battle, seeing him stationed on the ground again, all of them surrounded him at close quarters, wishing to capture him.

हालाँकि, उस लड़ाई में, उसे फिर से जमीन पर खड़ा देखकर, उन सभी ने उसे पकड़ने की इच्छा से उसे करीब से घेर लिया।

The destroyer of enemies saw that they were near him. He used his sword to slice off their right hands and their left and mutiliated other parts of their bodies.

शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले ने देखा कि वे मेरे निकट हैं। उसने अपनी तलवार का उपयोग करके उनके दाहिने और बाएं हाथ को काट डाला और उनके शरीर के अन्य हिस्सों को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया।

आयुधानि च सर्वेषां बाहूनपि च भूषितान् अपतन्त निकृत्ताङ्गा गता भूमिं गतासवः

All their arms were adorned with various ornaments. They were seen to fall down. They too, without their limbs, fell down on the ground, devoid of their lives.

उनकी सभी भुजाएँ विभिन्न आभूषणों से सुशोभित थीं। उन्हें नीचे गिरते देखा गया. वे भी अंगहीन होकर प्राणरहित होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

वृषकस्तु महाराज बहुधा परिविक्षतः अमुच्यत महारौद्रात्तस्माद्वीरावकर्तनात्

O great king! In that extremely terrible battle where brave warriors were slaughtered, only Vṛṣaka escaped, though he was severely wounded.

हे महान राजा! उस अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध में, जहाँ वीर योद्धा मारे गए थे, केवल वृषक ही बच पाया, हालाँकि वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया था।

तान्सर्वान्पतितान्दृष्ट्वा भीतो दुर्योधनस्ततः अभ्यभाषत संक्रुद्धो राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम्

On seeing that all of them had fallen down, Duryodhana was frightened. He spoke to the extremely terrible rākṣasa who was terrible in form.

यह देखकर कि वे सभी गिर पड़े हैं, दुर्योधन भयभीत हो गया। उन्होंने अत्यंत भयानक राक्षस से बात की, जिसका रूप भयानक था।

आर्श्यशृङ्गिं महेष्वासं मायाविनमरिंदमम् वैरिणं भीमसेनस्य पूर्वं बकवधेन वै

The scorcher of enemies was a great archer and was skilled in māyā. He was the son of Ṛṣyaśṛṅga. He had earlier become an enemy of Bhīmasena on account of the slaying of Baka.

शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाला महान धनुर्धर और माया विद्या में कुशल था। वह ऋषिश्रृंग के पुत्र थे। बक के वध के कारण वह पहले भीमसेन का शत्रु बन गया था।

पश्य वीर यथा ह्येष फल्गुनस्य सुतो बली मायावी विप्रियं घोरमकार्षीन्मे बलक्षयम्

"O brave one! Witness the strength of Phālguna's son. He is skilled in māyā and has caused the unpleasant and terrible destruction of my forces.

"हे वीर! फाल्गुन के पुत्र की ताकत का गवाह बनो। वह माया में कुशल है और उसने मेरी सेना का अप्रिय और भयानक विनाश किया है।

त्वं च कामगमस्तात मायास्त्रे च विशारदः कृतवैरश्च पार्थेन तस्मादेनं रणे जहि

O son! You are capable of going anywhere at will. You are skilled in the use of weapons of māyā. You are the sworn enemy of Pārtha. Therefore, kill him in battle."

हे वत्स आप अपनी इच्छा से कहीं भी जाने में सक्षम हैं। आप माया के हथियारों के प्रयोग में कुशल हैं। तुम पार्थ के कट्टर शत्रु हो। अत: उसे युद्ध में मार डालो।”

बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा तु राक्षसो घोरदर्शनः प्रययौ सिंहनादेन यत्रार्जुनसुतो युवा

The rākṣasa, terrible in form, agreed to these words. He roared like a lion and advanced to where Arjuna's young son was.

भयंकर रूप वाला राक्षस इन बातों से सहमत हो गया। वह शेर की तरह दहाड़ते हुए उस ओर बढ़े जहां अर्जुन का छोटा बेटा था।

स्वारूढैर्युद्धकुशलैर्विमलप्रासयोधिभिः वीरैः प्रहारिभिर्युक्तः स्वैरनीकैः समावृतः निहन्तुकामः समरे इरावन्तं महाबलम्

He was surrounded by his own soldiers, who were brave and armed. They were accomplished in fighting, were astride mounts and were armed with polished lances. He wished to kill the immensely powerful Irāvat in battle.

वह अपने ही सैनिकों से घिरा हुआ था, जो बहादुर और सशस्त्र थे। वे युद्ध में निपुण थे, घुड़सवार थे और पॉलिश किये हुए भालों से लैस थे। वह युद्ध में अत्यंत शक्तिशाली इरावत को मारना चाहता था।

इरावानपि संक्रुद्धस्त्वरमाणः पराक्रमी हन्तुकामममित्रघ्नो राक्षसं प्रत्यवारयत्

The valiant and swift Irāvat was enraged. The slayer of enemies countered the rākṣasa who was seeking his death.

बहादुर और तेज़ इरावत क्रोधित हो गए। शत्रुओं के संहारक ने उस राक्षस का मुकाबला किया जो उसकी मृत्यु का इच्छुक था।

तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसः सुमहाबलः त्वरमाणस्ततो मायां प्रयोक्तुमुपचक्रमे

On seeing that he was descending on him, the extremely powerful rākṣasa swiftly resorted to his powers of māyā.

यह देखकर कि वह अपने ऊपर आ रहा है, अत्यंत शक्तिशाली राक्षस ने तेजी से अपनी माया की शक्तियों का सहारा लिया।

तेन मायामयाः कॢप्ता हयास्तावन्त एव हि स्वारूढा राक्षसैर्घोरैः शूलपट्टिशपाणिभिः

He created a large number of illusory horses. They were ridden by terrible rākṣasa-s, who wielded spears and javelins.

उसने बड़ी संख्या में मायावी घोड़े बनाये। उन पर भाले और भाले चलाने वाले भयानक राक्षस सवार थे।

ते संरब्धाः समागम्य द्विसाहस्राः प्रहारिणः अचिराद्गमयामासुः प्रेतलोकं परस्परम्

Two thousand of these armed ones angrily advanced. The two sides clashed and quickly sent each other to the land of the dead.

इनमें से दो हज़ार हथियारबंद लोग क्रोधपूर्वक आगे बढ़े। दोनों पक्ष आपस में भिड़ गए और तुरंत एक-दूसरे को मृतकों की भूमि पर भेज दिया।

तस्मिंस्तु निहते सैन्ये तावुभौ युद्धदुर्मदौ संग्रामे व्यवतिष्ठेतां यथा वै वृत्रवासवौ

When the soldiers on both sides had been killed, the two of them, invincible in battle, attacked each other in that encounter, like Vṛtra against Vāsava.

जब दोनों पक्षों के सैनिक मारे गए, तो युद्ध में अजेय उन दोनों ने उस मुठभेड़ में एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया, जैसे वृत्र ने वासव के खिलाफ।

आद्रवन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसं युद्धदुर्मदम् इरावान्क्रोधसंरब्धः प्रत्यधावन्महाबलः

On seeing the rākṣasa, invincible in battle, advance against him, the extremely strong Irāvat was enraged and attacked him.

युद्ध में अजेय राक्षस को अपने विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ता देख अत्यंत बलशाली इरावत क्रोधित हो गया और उसने उस पर हमला कर दिया।

समभ्याशगतस्याजौ तस्य खड्गेन दुर्मतेः चिच्छेद कार्मुकं दीप्तं शरावापं च पञ्चकम्

When the evil-minded one approached close, he used his sword to slice off his blazing sword and shattered his shield into five parts.

जब दुष्ट मन वाला निकट आया, तो उसने अपनी तलवार से उसकी धधकती तलवार को काट डाला और उसकी ढाल को पाँच टुकड़ों में तोड़ दिया।

स निकृत्तं धनुर्दृष्ट्वा खं जवेन समाविशत् इरावन्तमभिक्रुद्धं मोहयन्निव मायया

On seeing that the bow had been severed, he quickly resorted to the sky and angrily confounded Irāvat with his māyā.

यह देखकर कि धनुष टूट गया है, उसने तुरंत आकाश का सहारा लिया और क्रोधपूर्वक अपनी माया से इरावत को भ्रमित कर दिया।

ततोऽन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य इरावानपि राक्षसम् विमोहयित्वा मायाभिस्तस्य गात्राणि सायकैः चिच्छेद सर्वमर्मज्ञः कामरूपो दुरासदः

But Irāvat also rose up into the sky and confounded the rākṣasa with his own māyā. He was invincible too and could assume any form at will. He knew about the body's inner organs and pierced his body with his arrows.

लेकिन इरावत भी आकाश में उठा और अपनी माया से राक्षस को भ्रमित कर दिया। वह अजेय भी था और इच्छानुसार कोई भी रूप धारण कर सकता था। वह शरीर के आंतरिक अंगों के बारे में जानता था और उसने अपने बाणों से उसके शरीर को छेद दिया।

तथा स राक्षसश्रेष्ठः शरैः कृत्तः पुनः पुनः संबभूव महाराज समवाप च यौवनम्

O great king! The foremost among rākṣasa-s was repeatedly wounded through these arrows, but he became hale again and regained his youth.

हे महान राजा! राक्षसों में सबसे प्रमुख इन बाणों से बार-बार घायल हुआ, लेकिन वह फिर से स्वस्थ हो गया और अपनी युवावस्था पुनः प्राप्त कर ली।

माया हि सहजा तेषां वयो रूपं च कामजम् एवं तद्राक्षसस्याङ्गं छिन्नं छिन्नं व्यरोहत

Māyā is natural to them, and according to their wishes, so are energy, age and beauty. Thus, though the rākṣasa's limbs were repeatedly mangled, they healed.

माया उनके लिए स्वाभाविक है, और उनकी इच्छा के अनुसार, ऊर्जा, आयु और सुंदरता भी होती है। इस प्रकार, यद्यपि राक्षस के अंग बार-बार क्षतिग्रस्त हुए, फिर भी वे ठीक हो गए।

इरावानपि संक्रुद्धो राक्षसं तं महाबलम् परश्वधेन तीक्ष्णेन चिच्छेद च पुनः पुनः

Irāvat used his sharp battle axe to repeatedly slice angrily at the immensely strong rākṣasa.

इरावत ने अत्यंत बलशाली राक्षस को क्रोधपूर्वक बार-बार काटने के लिए अपनी तेज़ कुल्हाड़ी का उपयोग किया।

स तेन बलिना वीरश्छिद्यमान इव द्रुमः राक्षसो व्यनदद्घोरं स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत्

That brave and powerful rākṣasa was repeatedly sliced like a tree and roared terribly, making a tumultuous sound.

वह वीर और शक्तिशाली राक्षस बार-बार वृक्ष की भाँति काटा जाता था और भीषण ध्वनि करता हुआ भयंकर गर्जना करता था।

परश्वधक्षतं रक्षः सुस्राव रुधिरं बहु ततश्चुक्रोध बलवांश्चक्रे वेगं च संयुगे

Wounded by the battleaxe, the rākṣasa began to profusely shed blood. The powerful one became enraged and continued to battle forcefully.

कुल्हाड़ी से घायल होकर राक्षस अत्यधिक रक्तपात करने लगा। शक्तिशाली क्रोधित हो गया और जबरदस्ती युद्ध करता रहा।

आर्श्यशृङ्गिस्ततो दृष्ट्वा समरे शत्रुमूर्जितम् कृत्वा घोरं महद्रूपं ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमे संग्रामशिरसो मध्ये सर्वेषां तत्र पश्यताम्

On seeing that the enemy was so energetic in the battle, Ṛṣyaśṛṅga's son assumed an extremely terrible and gigantic form. While everyone looked on, he tried to grasp him in the forefront of that battle.

युद्ध में शत्रु को इतना ऊर्जावान देखकर ऋष्यश्रृंग के पुत्र ने अत्यंत भयानक और विशाल रूप धारण कर लिया। जबकि हर कोई देख रहा था, उसने उसे उस लड़ाई में सबसे आगे समझने की कोशिश की।

तां दृष्ट्वा तादृशीं मायां राक्षसस्य महात्मनः इरावानपि संक्रुद्धो मायां स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे

But seeing this māyā employed by the great-souled rākṣasa, Irāvat angrily created his own māyā.

लेकिन महान आत्मा राक्षस द्वारा इस माया को नियोजित देखकर, इरावत ने गुस्से में अपनी माया बनाई।

तस्य क्रोधाभिभूतस्य संयुगेष्वनिवर्तिनः योऽन्वयो मातृकस्तस्य स एनमभिपेदिवान्

He was overcome by anger and he was one who never retreated from battle. His mother's relatives approached him.

वह क्रोध से वश में हो गया था और वह ऐसा व्यक्ति था जो युद्ध से कभी पीछे नहीं हटता था। उनकी मां के रिश्तेदारों ने उनसे संपर्क किया।

स नागैर्बहुशो राजन्सर्वतः संवृतो रणे दधार सुमहद्रूपमनन्त इव भोगवान् ततो बहुविधैर्नागैश्छादयामास राक्षसम्

O king! He was surrounded by many nāga-s in that battle, assuming a great form like Bhogavat. The rākṣasa was enveloped by many kinds of nāga-s.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में वे भोगवत के समान विशाल रूप धारण करके अनेक नागों से घिरे हुए थे। राक्षस अनेक प्रकार के नागों से घिरा हुआ था।

छाद्यमानस्तु नागैः स ध्यात्वा राक्षसपुंगवः सौपर्णं रूपमास्थाय भक्षयामास पन्नगान्

Enveloped by those nāga-s, that bull among rākṣasa-s thought and assumed the form of Suparṇa, so that he could devour the nāga-s.

उन नागों से घिरे हुए राक्षस बैल ने विचार किया और सुपर्ण का रूप धारण कर लिया, ताकि वह नागों को खा सके।

मायया भक्षिते तस्मिन्नन्वये तस्य मातृके विमोहितमिरावन्तमसिना राक्षसोऽवधीत्

On seeing that his mother's relatives were devoured through māyā, Irāvat was confused. And the rākṣasa killed him with his sword.

यह देखकर कि उसकी माँ के रिश्तेदारों को माया ने निगल लिया है, इरावत भ्रमित हो गया। और राक्षस ने उसे अपनी तलवार से मार डाला।

सकुण्डलं समुकुटं पद्मेन्दुसदृशप्रभम् इरावतः शिरो रक्षः पातयामास भूतले

Irāvat's head was adorned with earrings and a diadem and was as radiant as a lotus or the moon. The rākṣasa made it fall down on the ground.

इरावत का सिर बालियों और मुकुट से सुशोभित था और कमल या चंद्रमा के समान दीप्तिमान था। राक्षस ने उसे ज़मीन पर गिरा दिया।

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे राक्षसेनार्जुनात्मजे विशोकाः समपद्यन्त धार्तराष्ट्राः सराजकाः

On seeing that Arjuna's brave son had been slain by the rākṣasa, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, together with the kings, became free from sorrow.

यह देखकर कि अर्जुन का वीर पुत्र राक्षसों द्वारा मारा गया, राजाओं सहित धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र शोक से मुक्त हो गये।

तस्मिन्महति संग्रामे तादृशे भैरवे पुनः महान्व्यतिकरो घोरः सेनयोः समपद्यत

The great and terrible battle commenced again. The armies attacked each other and the carnage was great and terrible.

पुनः महान एवं भयानक युद्ध आरम्भ हो गया। सेनाओं ने एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया और नरसंहार बहुत बड़ा और भयानक था।

हया गजाः पदाताश्च विमिश्रा दन्तिभिर्हताः रथाश्च दन्तिनश्चैव पत्तिभिस्तत्र सूदिताः

Horses, elephants and infantry became mixed with each other and were killed by tuskers. Chariot-riders and elephants were also killed by foot soldiers.

घोड़े, हाथी और पैदल सेना एक-दूसरे के साथ मिश्रित हो गए और दंतैलों द्वारा मारे गए। पैदल सैनिकों द्वारा रथ-सवारों और हाथियों को भी मार डाला गया।

तथा पत्तिरथौघाश्च हयाश्च बहवो रणे रथिभिर्निहता राजंस्तव तेषां च संकुले

O king! Rāṭha-s, on your side and on theirs, killed masses of infantry and chariot-riders and many horses in that encounter.

हे राजा! आपके और उनके पक्ष के रथ-सवारों ने उस मुठभेड़ में पैदल सेना, रथ-सवारों और कई घोड़ों को मार डाला।

अजानन्नर्जुनश्चापि निहतं पुत्रमौरसम् जघान समरे शूरान्राज्ञस्तान्भीष्मरक्षिणः

Arjuna did not know that his son had been killed and in that battle, slew many kings who were protecting Bhīṣma.

अर्जुन को यह नहीं पता था कि उसका पुत्र मारा गया है और उस युद्ध में उसने भीष्म की रक्षा करने वाले कई राजाओं को मार डाला।

तथैव तावका राजन्सृञ्जयाश्च महाबलाः जुह्वतः समरे प्राणान्निजघ्नुरितरेतरम्

O king! The immensely strong ones, on your side and on that of the Sṛñjaya-s, fought each other in that battle, offering their lives as oblations.

हे राजा! आपके और सृंजय के पक्ष के अत्यंत बलशाली लोग उस युद्ध में अपने प्राणों की आहुति देते हुए एक-दूसरे से लड़े।

मुक्तकेशा विकवचा विरथाश्छिन्नकार्मुकाः बाहुभिः समयुध्यन्त समवेताः परस्परम्

Their hair was dishevelled. They were without armour. They were without chariots and their bows had been severed. But they confronted each other and fought with their bare arms.

उनके बाल बिखरे हुए थे. वे बिना कवच के थे. वे रथहीन थे और उनके धनुष कट गये थे। लेकिन उन्होंने एक-दूसरे का सामना किया और अपनी नंगी भुजाओं से युद्ध किया।

तथा मर्मातिगैर्भीष्मो निजघान महारथान् कम्पयन्समरे सेनां पाण्डवानां महाबलः

The immensely strong Bhīṣma killed many mahāratha-s with arrows that penetrated the innards and made the soldiers of the Pāṇḍava-s tremble.

अत्यंत बलशाली भीष्म ने कई महारथियों को उन बाणों से मार डाला जो अंदर तक घुस गए और पांडवों के सैनिकों को कांपने लगे।

तेन यौधिष्ठिरे सैन्ये बहवो मानवा हताः दन्तिनः सादिनश्चैव रथिनोऽथ हयास्तथा

He killed many men in Yudhiṣṭhira's army, and many elephants, horse-riders, chariot-riders and horses.

उसने युधिष्ठिर की सेना के कई लोगों और कई हाथियों, घुड़सवारों, रथ-सवारों और घोड़ों को मार डाला।

तत्र भारत भीष्मस्य रणे दृष्ट्वा पराक्रमम् अत्यद्भुतमपश्याम शक्रस्येव पराक्रमम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On witnessing Bhīṣma's valour in that battle, we thought that it was as extraordinary as Śākra's valour.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उस युद्ध में भीष्म की वीरता देखकर हमने सोचा कि यह शक्र की वीरता जितनी ही असाधारण थी।

तथैव भीमसेनस्य पार्षतस्य च भारत रौद्रमासीत्तदा युद्धं सात्वतस्य च धन्विनः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Bhīmasena and Pārṣata were also like that. The battle fought by the Sātvata archer was also terrible.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! भीमसेन और परषट भी ऐसे ही थे। सात्वत धनुर्धर द्वारा लड़ा गया युद्ध भी भयानक था।

दृष्ट्वा द्रोणस्य विक्रान्तं पाण्डवान्भयमाविशत् एक एव रणे शक्तो हन्तुमस्मान्ससैनिकान्

On witnessing Droṇa's valour, the Pāṇḍava-s were overcome by fear. They thought that he was alone capable of killing all the soldiers in battle,

द्रोण की वीरता देखकर पांडव भय से अभिभूत हो गये। उन्होंने सोचा कि वह अकेले ही युद्ध में सभी सैनिकों को मारने में सक्षम था,

किं पुनः पृथिवीशूरैर्योधव्रातैः समावृतः इत्यब्रुवन्महाराज रणे द्रोणेन पीडिताः

not to speak of a situation where he was surrounded by warriors whose bravery was famous on earth. O great king! Oppressed by Droṇa in that battle, they spoke in this fashion.

ऐसी स्थिति के बारे में तो बात ही मत कीजिए जब वह ऐसे योद्धाओं से घिरा हुआ था जिनकी बहादुरी पृथ्वी पर प्रसिद्ध थी। हे महान राजा! उस युद्ध में द्रोण द्वारा प्रताड़ित किये जाने पर वे इस प्रकार बोले।

वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे संग्रामे भरतर्षभ उभयोः सेनयोः शूरा नामृष्यन्त परस्परम्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! While that terrible encounter continued between the two armies, the brave ones did not pardon each other.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जबकि दोनों सेनाओं के बीच वह भयानक मुठभेड़ जारी रही, बहादुरों ने एक-दूसरे को माफ नहीं किया।

आविष्टा इव युध्यन्ते रक्षोभूता महाबलाः तावकाः पाण्डवेयाश्च संरब्धास्तात धन्विनः

Those immensely strong ones were engrossed in that battle, as if they were overcome by rākṣasa-s and demons. The archers on your side, and those of the Pāṇḍaveya-s, were enraged.

वे अत्यंत बलवान उस युद्ध में ऐसे तल्लीन हो गये, मानों उन पर राक्षसों तथा राक्षसों ने विजय पा ली हो। आपके पक्ष के धनुर्धर और पाण्डवीय धनुर्धर क्रोधित हो गये।

न स्म पश्यामहे कंचिद्यः प्राणान्परिरक्षति संग्रामे दैत्यसंकाशे तस्मिन्योद्धा नराधिप

We did not see anyone seeking to protect his life. O lord of men! It was a battle like that of warriors from among the daitya-s themselves.

हमने किसी को भी अपने जीवन की रक्षा की मांग करते नहीं देखा। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! यह स्वयं दैत्यों में से योद्धाओं की तरह एक युद्ध था।
