संजय उवाच यथा स भगवान्व्यासः कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् तथैव सहिताः सर्वे समाजग्मुर्महीक्षितः

Sañjaya said: "Just as the illustrious Kṛṣṇā Dvaipāyana Vyāsa had said, in that fashion, all the lords of the earth assembled for the encounter.

संजय ने कहा: "जैसा कि प्रसिद्ध कृष्ण द्वैपायन व्यास ने कहा था, उसी तरह, पृथ्वी के सभी देवता मुठभेड़ के लिए इकट्ठे हुए।

मघाविषयगः सोमस्तद्दिनं प्रत्यपद्यत दीप्यमानाश्च संपेतुर्दिवि सप्त महाग्रहाः

On that day, the moon approached Māgha. The seven large and blazing planets appeared in the sky.

उस दिन, चंद्रमा माघ के निकट आया। आकाश में सात बड़े और चमकते हुए ग्रह प्रकट हुए।

द्विधाभूत इवादित्य उदये प्रत्यदृश्यत ज्वलन्त्या शिखया भूयो भानुमानुदितो दिवि

When the sun arose, it seemed to be divided into two parts. When the blazing sun arose in the sky, it had a flaming crest.

जब सूर्य उदय हुआ तो वह दो भागों में बंटा हुआ प्रतीत हुआ। जब चमकता हुआ सूरज आकाश में उगता था, तो उसकी एक जलती हुई शिखा होती थी।

ववाशिरे च दीप्तायां दिशि गोमायुवायसाः लिप्समानाः शरीराणि मांसशोणितभोजनाः

The directions blazed. Desiring to feed on bodies, flesh and blood, jackals and crows cried out.

दिशाएँ चमक उठीं। शरीर, मांस और रक्त खाने की इच्छा से सियार और कौवे चिल्लाने लगे।

अहन्यहनि पार्थानां वृद्धः कुरुपितामहः भरद्वाजात्मजश्चैव प्रातरुत्थाय संयतौ

Each day, the aged grandfather of the Kuru-s and Bhāradvāja's son arose and with concentration, wished that the Pārtha-s might not be killed

प्रत्येक दिन, कुरु-वंश के वृद्ध दादा और भारद्वाज के पुत्र उठते थे और एकाग्रता के साथ कामना करते थे कि पार्थ-वंश को न मारा जाए।

जयोऽस्तु पाण्डुपुत्राणामित्यूचतुररिंदमौ युयुधाते तवार्थाय यथा स समयः कृतः

and that the sons of Pāṇḍu might be victorious. Those undecaying scorchers of enemies fought for your sake only because they had taken a pledge.

और पाण्डु के पुत्र विजयी हो सकें। वे शत्रुओं को कभी नष्ट न करने वाले आप ही के लिये लड़े, क्योंकि उन्होंने प्रतिज्ञा कर ली थी।

सर्वधर्मविशेषज्ञः पिता देवव्रतस्तव समानीय महीपालानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

Your father, Devavrata, was knowledgeable about every aspect of dharma. He summoned all the lords of the earth and spoke these words to them.

आपके पिता देवव्रत धर्म के हर पहलू के जानकार थे। उसने पृय्वी के सब सरदारों को बुलाया, और उन से ये बातें कहीं।

इदं वः क्षत्रिया द्वारं स्वर्गायापावृतं महत् गच्छध्वं तेन शक्रस्य ब्रह्मणश्च सलोकताम्

"O kṣatriya-s! This great door that leads to heaven has been opened up. Paś-s through it and go the worlds of Śākra and Brahmā.

"हे क्षत्रियों! स्वर्ग की ओर जाने वाला यह महान द्वार खुल गया है। इसके माध्यम से पार करें और शक्र और ब्रह्मा की दुनिया में जाएं।

एष वः शाश्वतः पन्थाः पूर्वैः पूर्वतरैर्गतः संभावयत चात्मानमव्यग्रमनसो युधि

This is the eternal path, indicated by the ancient ones, and those who have preceded them. Honour yourselves by fighting with great attention.

यह शाश्वत मार्ग है, जो प्राचीन लोगों और उनसे पहले के लोगों द्वारा इंगित किया गया है। बहुत ध्यान से लड़कर अपना सम्मान करें।

नाभागो हि ययातिश्च मान्धाता नहुषो नृगः संसिद्धाः परमं स्थानं गताः कर्मभिरीदृशैः

Through such deeds, Nābhāga, Yayāti, Mandhata, Nāhuṣa and Nṛga have been successful and have reached the supreme goal.

ऐसे कर्मों से नाभाग, ययाति, मांधाता, नहुष और नृग सफल हुए हैं और परम लक्ष्य तक पहुंचे हैं।

अधर्मः क्षत्रियस्यैष यद्व्याधिमरणं गृहे यदाजौ निधनं याति सोऽस्य धर्मः सनातनः

It is adharma for a kṣatriya to die from disease in his home. The eternal dharma is to die in the field of battle.

किसी क्षत्रिय का अपने घर में बीमारी से मरना अधर्म है। युद्ध के मैदान में मरना ही शाश्वत धर्म है।

एवमुक्ता महीपाला भीष्मेण भरतर्षभ निर्ययुः स्वान्यनीकानि शोभयन्तो रथोत्तमैः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Having been thus addressed by Bhīṣma, all the lords of the earth went to the heads of their armies and were resplendent in their supreme chariots.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! भीष्म द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, पृथ्वी के सभी राजा अपनी सेनाओं के प्रमुखों के पास गए और अपने सर्वोच्च रथों पर शोभायमान हो गए।

स तु वैकर्तनः कर्णः सामात्यः सह बन्धुभिः न्यासितः समरे शस्त्रं भीष्मेण भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! But because of Bhīṣma, Vaikartaṇa Karṇa, together with his advisers and relatives, cast aside his weapons in that battle.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! लेकिन भीष्म के कारण, वैकर्तन कर्ण ने अपने सलाहकारों और रिश्तेदारों के साथ, उस युद्ध में अपने हथियार फेंक दिए।

अपेतकर्णाः पुत्रास्ते राजानश्चैव तावकाः निर्ययुः सिंहनादेन नादयन्तो दिशो दश

Without Karṇa, your sons and all the kings on your side marched out. They roared like lions and this resounded in the ten directions.

कर्ण के बिना, आपके पुत्र और आपके पक्ष के सभी राजा बाहर चले गए। वे सिंहों की भाँति दहाड़ने लगे और दसों दिशाओं में गूँज उठी।

श्वेतैश्छत्रैः पताकाभिर्ध्वजवारणवाजिभिः तान्यनीकान्यशोभन्त रथैरथ पदातिभिः

There were white umbrellas and flags and pennants, elephants and horses. With charioteers, chariots and infantry, the army was splendid.

वहाँ सफेद छतरियाँ और झंडे और पताकाएँ, हाथी और घोड़े थे। रथियों, रथों और पैदल सेना से युक्त वह सेना शोभायमान थी।

भेरीपणवशब्दैश्च पटहानां च निस्वनैः रथनेमिनिनादैश्च बभूवाकुलिता मही

There was the sound of drums and cymbals and also the noise of kettledrums. The earth trembled because of the roar of the wheels of chariots.

ढोल और झांझ की आवाज और नगाड़ों का शोर भी था। रथों के पहियों की गर्जना से पृथ्वी कांप उठी।

काञ्चनाङ्गदकेयूरैः कार्मुकैश्च महारथाः भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त जङ्गमाः पर्वता इव

The mahāratha-s had golden armlets and bracelets and bows. They were as radiant as mobile mountains.

महारथियों के पास सोने के बाजूबंद, कंगन और धनुष थे। वे गतिशील पर्वतों के समान दीप्तिमान थे।

तालेन महता भीष्मः पञ्चतारेण केतुना विमलादित्यसंकाशस्तस्थौ कुरुचमूपतिः

Bhīṣma's standard had a large palm tree with five stars. The general of the Kuru army was like the clear sun.

भीष्म के ध्वज में पाँच तारों वाला एक बड़ा ताड़ का पेड़ था। कुरु सेना का सेनापति निर्मल सूर्य के समान था।

ये त्वदीया महेष्वासा राजानो भरतर्षभ अवर्तन्त यथादेशं राजञ्शांतनवस्य ते

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! O king! As instructed by Śāntanu's son, all the kings and great archers who were on your side stationed themselves.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! हे राजा! शान्तनु के पुत्र की आज्ञानुसार आपके पक्ष के सभी राजा तथा महान धनुर्धर खड़े हो गये।

स तु गोवासनः शैब्यः सहितः सर्वराजभिः ययौ मातङ्गराजेन राजार्हेण पताकिना पद्मवर्णस्त्वनीकानां सर्वेषामग्रतः स्थितः

With all the kings, Śaibyā Govāsana advanced on a king among elephants that was bedecked with flags and deserved to carry kings. The one whose complexion was like the lotus, was at the head of all the soldiers.

सभी राजाओं के साथ, शैब्या गोवासन हाथियों के बीच एक राजा पर आगे बढ़े, जो झंडों से सुसज्जित था और राजाओं को ले जाने के योग्य था। जिसका रंग कमल के समान था, वह सभी सैनिकों में सबसे आगे था।

अश्वत्थामा ययौ यत्तः सिंहलाङ्गूलकेतनः श्रुतायुश्चित्रसेनश्च पुरुमित्रो विविंशतिः

Aśvatthāma, was ready and his standard was adorned with a lion's tail. Śrutāyudha, Citrasenā, Purumitra, Viviṃśati,

अश्वत्थामा तैयार था और उसका झंडा शेर की पूंछ से सजाया गया था। श्रुतायुध, चित्रसेना, पुरुमित्र, विविंशति,

शल्यो भूरिश्रवाश्चैव विकर्णश्च महारथः एते सप्त महेष्वासा द्रोणपुत्रपुरोगमाः स्यन्दनैर्वरवर्णाभैर्भीष्मस्यासन्पुरःसराः

Śalya, Bhurishrava, mahāratha Vikarṇa—these seven great archers were adorned in excellent armour. They rode their chariots and followed Droṇa's son, ahead of Bhīṣma.

शल्य, भूरिश्रवा, महारथ विकर्ण - ये सात महान धनुर्धर उत्कृष्ट कवच से सुशोभित थे। वे अपने रथों पर सवार होकर भीष्म से पहले, द्रोण के पुत्र का पीछा करने लगे।

तेषामपि महोत्सेधाः शोभयन्तो रथोत्तमान् भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त जाम्बूनदमया ध्वजाः

Their great standards were resplendent on their supreme chariots. The golden flags were seen to be blazing.

उनके महान ध्वज उनके सर्वोच्च रथों पर शोभायमान थे। स्वर्ण ध्वजाएँ चमकती हुई दिखाई दे रही थीं।

जाम्बूनदमयी वेदिः कमण्डलुविभूषिता केतुराचार्यमुख्यस्य द्रोणस्य धनुषा सह

Droṇa, foremost among preceptors, had a golden altar on his standard, adorned with a water pot and the sign of a bow.

गुरुओं में अग्रणी द्रोण के ध्वज पर एक सुनहरी वेदी थी, जो पानी के बर्तन और धनुष के चिह्न से सुशोभित थी।

अनेकशतसाहस्रमनीकमनुकर्षतः महान्दुर्योधनस्यासीन्नागो मणिमयो ध्वजः

Duryodhana's large standard had a bejewelled elephant and led hundreds and thousands of soldiers.

दुर्योधन के विशाल ध्वज में एक रत्नजड़ित हाथी था और वह सैकड़ों और हजारों सैनिकों का नेतृत्व करता था।

तस्य पौरवकालिङ्गौ काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः क्षेमधन्वा सुमित्रश्च तस्थुः प्रमुखतो रथाः

Paurava, Kāliṅga, Sudakṣiṇa from Kāmboja, Kshemadhanva, Sumitrā and other rāṭha-s were in front of him.

उनके सामने पौरव, कलिंग, काम्बोज के सुदक्षिण, क्षेमधन्वा, सुमित्रा और अन्य रथ थे।

स्यन्दनेन महार्हेण केतुना वृषभेण च प्रकर्षन्निव सेनाग्रं मागधश्च नृपो ययौ

The king of Māgadha guided the forces from the front, on an extremely expensive chariot that bore the standard of a bull.

मगध के राजा ने एक अत्यंत महंगे रथ पर, जिस पर बैल का मानक था, सामने से सेना का मार्गदर्शन किया।

तदङ्गपतिना गुप्तं कृपेण च महात्मना शारदाभ्रचयप्रख्यं प्राच्यानामभवद्बलम्

He was protected by the lord of Aṅga 38 and the great-souled Kṛpa. That extremely large army from the east looked like scattered autumn clouds.

अंग 38 के स्वामी और महान आत्मा कृप द्वारा उनकी रक्षा की गई थी। पूर्व की ओर से आने वाली वह अत्यंत विशाल सेना बिखरे हुए शरद ऋतु के बादलों के समान लग रही थी।

अनीकप्रमुखे तिष्ठन्वराहेण महायशाः शुशुभे केतुमुख्येन राजतेन जयद्रथः

The immensely famous Jayadratha stationed himself at the forefront of the soldiers. He had a beautiful silver standard, marked with the sign of a boar.

अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध जयद्रथ स्वयं सैनिकों में सबसे आगे तैनात हो गया। उसके पास एक सुंदर चांदी का मानक था, जिस पर सूअर का चिन्ह अंकित था।

शतं रथसहस्राणां तस्यासन्वशवर्तिनः अष्टौ नागसहस्राणि सादिनामयुतानि षट्

A hundred thousand chariots, eight thousand elephants and sixty thousand horses were under his command.

एक लाख रथ, आठ हजार हाथी और साठ हजार घोड़े उसके अधीन थे।

तत्सिन्धुपतिना राजन्पालितं ध्वजिनीमुखम् अनन्तरथनागाश्वमशोभत महद्बलम्

O king! Commanded by the lord of Sindhu, foremost among standard bearers, that large army was resplendent with chariots, elephants and horses.

हे राजा! ध्वजवाहकों में अग्रणी सिन्धु के स्वामी की आज्ञा से वह बड़ी सेना रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों से शोभायमान थी।

षष्ट्या रथसहस्रैस्तु नागानामयुतेन च पतिः सर्वकलिङ्गानां ययौ केतुमता सह

Together with Ketumat, the lord of all the Kāliṅga-s advanced with sixty thousand chariots and ten thousand elephants. His large elephants were like mountains.

समस्त कलिंगों के स्वामी केतुमत के साथ साठ हजार रथों और दस हजार हाथियों के साथ आगे बढ़े। उसके बड़े-बड़े हाथी पर्वतों के समान थे।

तस्य पर्वतसंकाशा व्यरोचन्त महागजाः यन्त्रतोमरतूणीरैः पताकाभिश्च शोभिताः

They were adorned with implements of war, 40 spears, quivers and standards and were beautiful.

वे युद्ध के उपकरणों, 40 भालों, तरकशों और झंडों से सुशोभित थे और सुंदर थे।

शुशुभे केतुमुख्येन पादपेन कलिङ्गपः श्वेतच्छत्रेण निष्केण चामरव्यजनेन च

Kāliṅga was resplendent with a standard that bore the sign of a tree. He had a white umbrella and golden whisks.

कलिंग एक ध्वज से शोभायमान था जिस पर एक वृक्ष का चिन्ह अंकित था। उसके पास एक सफेद छाता और सुनहरी मूंछें थीं।

केतुमानपि मातङ्गं विचित्रपरमाङ्कुशम् आस्थितः समरे राजन्मेघस्थ इव भानुमान्

O king! Ketumat was also on an elephant, with a colourful and supreme goad. He was stationed in that battle, like the sun amidst clouds.

हे राजा! केतुमत भी एक हाथी पर सवार था, जिसके पास एक रंगीन और सर्वोच्च अंकुश था। वह उस युद्ध में ऐसे तैनात था, जैसे बादलों के बीच सूरज।

तेजसा दीप्यमानस्तु वारणोत्तममास्थितः भगदत्तो ययौ राजा यथा वज्रधरस्तथा

King Bhagadatta was stationed on a supreme elephant and was radiant in his energy. He was like the wielder of the vajra.

राजा भगदत्त एक सर्वोच्च हाथी पर सवार थे और उनकी शक्ति में तेजस्वी थे। वह वज्रधारी के समान था।

गजस्कन्धगतावास्तां भगदत्तेन संमितौ विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ केतुमन्तमनुव्रतौ

Vinda and Anuvinda from Avanti were regarded as Bhagadatta's equal. They rode on the shoulders of elephants and followed Ketumat.

अवंती के विंदा और अनुविंदा को भगदत्त के समकक्ष माना जाता था। वे हाथियों के कंधों पर सवार होकर केतुमत के पीछे चले।

स रथानीकवान्व्यूहो हस्त्यङ्गोत्तमशीर्षवान् वाजिपक्षः पतन्नुग्रः प्राहरत्सर्वतोमुखः

The elephants were the body. The horses were the sides. That fierce formation was ready to descend and attack on all sides.

हाथी शरीर थे. घोड़े किनारे थे. वह भयंकर संरचना नीचे उतरने और हर तरफ से हमला करने के लिए तैयार थी।

द्रोणेन विहितो राजन्राज्ञा शांतनवेन च तथैवाचार्यपुत्रेण बाह्लीकेन कृपेण च

O king! Instructed by Droṇa, the king who was Śāntanu's son, the son of the preceptor, Bahlika and Kṛpa, the arrays of chariots were arranged in vyūha-s with excellent heads.

हे राजा! शांतनु के पुत्र, गुरु, बाह्लिक और कृप के पुत्र, राजा द्रोण के निर्देश पर, उत्कृष्ट सिरों वाले व्यूहों में रथों की व्यवस्था की गई थी।
