संजय उवाच तथा द्रोणमभिघ्नन्तं साश्वसूतरथद्विपान् व्यथिताः पाण्डवा दृष्ट्वा न चैनं पर्यवारयन्

Sañjaya said: On seeing Droṇa slaughter the horses, charioteers, rāṭha-s and elephants, the Pāṇḍava-s were distressed and surrounded him.

संजय ने कहा: द्रोण को घोड़ों, सारथियों, रथों और हाथियों का वध करते देखकर, पांडव व्यथित हो गए और उन्हें घेर लिया।

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नधनंजयौ अब्रवीत्सर्वतो यत्तैः कुम्भयोनिर्निवार्यताम्

King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Dhanañjayā. "Make endeavours to counter the one who was born from a pot and surround him.

राजा युधिष्ठिर ने धृष्टद्युम्न और धनंजय से बात की। “जो घड़े से उत्पन्न हुआ है, उसका प्रतिकार करने का प्रयत्न करो और उसे घेर लो।

तत्रैनमर्जुनश्चैव पार्षतश्च सहानुगः पर्यगृह्णंस्ततः सर्वे समायान्तं महारथाः

Arjuna and Pārṣata, with their followers, surrounded him, together with all the mahāratha-s—

अर्जुन और पारसत ने अपने अनुयायियों के साथ, सभी महारथियों के साथ, उसे घेर लिया-

केकया भीमसेनश्च सौभद्रोऽथ घटोत्कचः युधिष्ठिरो यमौ मत्स्या द्रुपदस्यात्मजास्तथा

the Kekaya-s, Bhīmasena, Subhadrā's son, Ghaṭotkaca, Yudhiṣṭhira, the twins, Mātsya, Drupada's son,

केकय, भीमसेन, सुभद्रा का पुत्र, घटोत्कच, युधिष्ठिर, जुड़वाँ, मत्स्य, द्रुपद का पुत्र,

द्रौपदेयाश्च संहृष्टा धृष्टकेतुः ससात्यकिः चेकितानश्च संक्रुद्धो युयुत्सुश्च महारथः

Draupadī's cheerful sons, Dhṛṣṭaketu, Sātyaki, the enraged Cekitāna and mahāratha Yuyutsu.

द्रौपदी के हँसमुख पुत्र, धृष्टकेतु, सात्यकि, क्रोधित चेकितान और महारथ युयुत्सु।

ये चान्ये पार्थिवा राजन्पाण्डवस्यानुयायिनः कुलवीर्यानुरूपाणि चक्रुः कर्माण्यनेकशः

O king! There were many other kings who followed the Pāṇḍava-s. In accordance with their lineage and their valour, they performed many deeds.

हे राजा! कई अन्य राजा भी थे जिन्होंने पांडवों का अनुसरण किया। अपने वंश और पराक्रम के अनुरूप उन्होंने अनेक कर्म किये।

संगृह्यमाणां तां दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवैर्वाहिनीं रणे व्यावृत्य चक्षुषी कोपाद्भारद्वाजोऽन्ववैक्षत

On seeing that the army of the Pāṇḍava-s was thus protected in battle, Bhāradvāja's son glanced at them, with anger in his eyes.

यह देखकर कि पांडवों की सेना इस प्रकार युद्ध में सुरक्षित थी, भारद्वाज के पुत्र ने उनकी ओर देखा, उनकी आँखों में क्रोध था।

स तीव्रं कोपमास्थाय रथे समरदुर्मदः व्यधमत्पाण्डवानीकमभ्राणीव सदागतिः

He was stationed on his chariot, invincible in battle, and was overcome by terrible rage. He pierced the Pāṇḍava army, like the wind scattering clouds.

वह अपने रथ पर तैनात था, युद्ध में अजेय था और भयानक क्रोध से वश में था। जैसे वायु बादलों को छिन्न-भिन्न कर देती है, उसी प्रकार उसने पाण्डव सेना को विदीर्ण कर दिया।

रथानश्वान्नरान्नागानभिधावंस्ततस्ततः चचारोन्मत्तवद्द्रोणो वृद्धोऽपि तरुणो यथा

He attacked the chariots, horses, men and elephants in every direction. Though he was old, Droṇa roamed around, like a mad young man.

उसने हर दिशा से रथों, घोड़ों, मनुष्यों और हाथियों पर हमला किया। यद्यपि द्रोण वृद्ध थे, फिर भी वे पागल युवक की भाँति इधर-उधर घूमते रहते थे।

तस्य शोणितदिग्धाङ्गाः शोणास्ते वातरंहसः आजानेया हया राजन्नविभ्रान्ताः श्रियं दधुः

His horses were crimson in colour and were as fleet as the wind. They were covered in blood. O king! Those horses thus assumed a beautiful appearance.

उसके घोड़े गहरे लाल रंग के और हवा के समान बेड़े वाले थे। वे खून से लथपथ थे. हे राजा! इस प्रकार उन घोड़ों ने सुन्दर रूप धारण कर लिया।

तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धमापतन्तं यतव्रतम् दृष्ट्वा संप्राद्रवन्योधाः पाण्डवस्य ततस्ततः

On seeing that angry one, rigid in his vows, descend like death, the Pāṇḍava warriors fled in every direction.

अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ उस क्रोधी को मृत्यु के समान आते देख पाण्डव योद्धा सभी दिशाओं में भाग गये।

तेषां प्रद्रवतां भीमः पुनरावर्ततामपि वीक्षतां तिष्ठतां चासीच्छब्दः परमदारुणः

Some fled in fright. Others returned. Some glanced at him and an extremely dreadful noise arose,

कुछ डर के मारे भाग गये। अन्य लोग लौट गये। कुछ की नजर उस पर पड़ी और एक अत्यंत भयानक आवाज उठी,

शूराणां हर्षजननो भीरूणां भयवर्धनः द्यावापृथिव्योर्विवरं पूरयामास सर्वतः

causing delight among brave ones and leading to fright among those who were cowards. This completely filled the space between the sky and the earth.

इससे बहादुरों में खुशी पैदा हुई और कायरों में डर पैदा हुआ। इससे आकाश और पृथ्वी के बीच का स्थान पूरी तरह भर गया।

ततः पुनरपि द्रोणो नाम विश्रावयन्युधि अकरोद्रौद्रमात्मानं किरञ्शरशतैः परान्

Yet again, Droṇa announced his name in the battle. He shot hundreds of arrows at the enemy and assumed a dreadful form.

एक बार फिर, द्रोण ने युद्ध में अपने नाम की घोषणा की। उसने शत्रु पर सैकड़ों बाण छोड़े और भयानक रूप धारण कर लिया।

स तथा तान्यनीकानि पाण्डवेयस्य धीमतः कालवन्न्यवधीद्द्रोणो युवेव स्थविरो बली

Though he was aged, the powerful Droṇa acted like one who was young. The intelligent one was like death amidst the Pāṇḍava soldiers.

यद्यपि वह वृद्ध था, शक्तिशाली द्रोण ने एक युवा व्यक्ति की तरह व्यवहार किया। वह बुद्धिमान पाण्डव सैनिकों के बीच मृत्यु के समान था।

उत्कृत्य च शिरांस्युग्रो बाहूनपि सभूषणान् कृत्वा शून्यान्रथोपस्थानुदक्रोशन्महारथः

The fierce one sliced off the heads and the arms with their ornaments. The mahāratha rendered the chariots empty and roared.

उस भयंकर राक्षस ने आभूषणों सहित सिर और भुजाएँ काट डालीं। महारथी ने रथों को खाली कर दिया और गर्जना की।

तस्य हर्षप्रणादेन बाणवेगेन चाभिभो प्राकम्पन्त रणे योधा गावः शीतार्दिता इव

O lord! Because of his roars of delight and because of the force of his arrows, the warriors trembled in the field of battle, like cattle because of the winter.

हे भगवान! उसकी प्रसन्नता की गर्जना के कारण और उसके बाणों के बल के कारण योद्धा युद्ध के मैदान में सर्दी के कारण मवेशियों की तरह कांपने लगे।

द्रोणस्य रथघोषेण मौर्वीनिष्पेषणेन च धनुःशब्देन चाकाशे शब्दः समभवन्महान्

As a result of the roar of Droṇa's chariot, the stretching of his bowstring and the sound of his bow, a great sound arose in the sky.

द्रोण के रथ की गर्जना, उसकी प्रत्यंचा खिंचने तथा धनुष की टंकार के फलस्वरूप आकाश में एक महान शब्द उत्पन्न हुआ।

अथास्य बहुशो बाणा निश्चरन्तः सहस्रशः व्याप्य सर्वा दिशः पेतुर्गजाश्वरथपत्तिषु

Many thousands of arrows were released by him. They covered all the directions and descended on the elephants, the horses and the chariots.

उसके द्वारा कई हजार बाण छोड़े गये। उन्होंने सभी दिशाओं को कवर किया और हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों पर सवार होकर उतरे।

तं कार्मुकमहावेगमस्त्रज्वलितपावकम् द्रोणमासादयां चक्रुः पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह

His extremely forceful bow was like the fire, with arrows as its flames. The Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s attacked Droṇa.

उनका अत्यंत शक्तिशाली धनुष अग्नि के समान था और बाण उसकी ज्वाला के समान थे। पंचालों और पांडवों ने द्रोण पर आक्रमण किया।

तान्वै सरथहस्त्यश्वान्प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम् द्रोणोऽचिरेणाकरोच्च महीं शोणितकर्दमाम्

But he dispatched the rāṭha-s, elephants and horses to Yāma's abode. In a short while, Droṇa covered the earth with the mud of blood.

लेकिन उन्होंने रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को यम के निवास पर भेज दिया। थोड़ी ही देर में द्रोण ने पृथ्वी को रक्त की कीचड़ से ढक दिया।

तन्वता परमास्त्राणि शरान्सततमस्यता द्रोणेन विहितं दिक्षु बाणजालमदृश्यत

He showered supreme weapons and arrows in every direction. Droṇa covered the directions with his net of arrows and nothing could be seen.

उन्होंने सभी दिशाओं में उत्तम अस्त्र-शस्त्रों और बाणों की वर्षा की। द्रोण ने अपने बाणों के जाल से दिशाओं को ढक दिया और कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था।

पदातिषु रथाश्वेषु वारणेषु च सर्वशः तस्य विद्युदिवाभ्रेषु चरन्केतुरदृश्यत

Foot soldiers, chariots, horses and elephants were shrouded and his standard could be seen, roaming around, like a cloud tinged with lightning.

पैदल सैनिक, रथ, घोड़े और हाथी घिरे हुए थे और उसका ध्वज बिजली से चमकते बादल की तरह चारों ओर घूमता हुआ देखा जा सकता था।

स केकयानां प्रवरांश्च पञ्च; पाञ्चालराजं च शरैः प्रमृद्य युधिष्ठिरानीकमदीनयोधी; द्रोणोऽभ्ययात्कार्मुकबाणपाणिः

With the bow and arrows in his hand, Droṇa used arrows to penetrate the five brave ones from Kekaya and the king of Pāñcāla and then attacked Yudhiṣṭhira's army.

अपने हाथ में धनुष और बाण लेकर, द्रोण ने केकय के पांच वीरों और पांचाल के राजा को भेदने के लिए बाणों का उपयोग किया और फिर युधिष्ठिर की सेना पर हमला किया।

तं भीमसेनश्च धनंजयश्च; शिनेश्च नप्ता द्रुपदात्मजश्च शैब्यात्मजः काशिपतिः शिबिश्च; हृष्टा नदन्तो व्यकिरञ्शरौघैः

Bhīmasena, Dhanañjayā, Śini's grandson, Drupada's son, Śibi's son, the lord of Kāśi and Śibi were delighted. They roared and covered him with a large number of arrows.

भीमसेन, धनंजय, शिनि के पोते, द्रुपद के पुत्र, शिबि के पुत्र, काशी और शिबि के स्वामी प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने गर्जना की और बड़ी संख्या में बाणों से उसे ढक दिया।

तेषामथो द्रोणधनुर्विमुक्ताः; पतत्रिणः काञ्चनचित्रपुङ्खाः भित्त्वा शरीराणि गजाश्वयूनां; जग्मुर्महीं शोणितदिग्धवाजाः

They were assailed by arrows released from Droṇa's bow. These were colourful and gold-tufted. They pierced the bodies of elephants and young horses and penetrated the ground, the tufts covered with blood.

द्रोण के धनुष से छोड़े गये बाणों द्वारा उन पर आक्रमण किया गया। ये रंगीन और सोने से जड़े हुए थे। उन्होंने हाथियों और युवा घोड़ों के शरीर को छेद दिया और ज़मीन में घुस गए, जिसके गुच्छे खून से लथपथ हो गए।

सा योधसंघैश्च रथैश्च भूमिः; शरैर्विभिन्नैर्गजवाजिभिश्च प्रच्छाद्यमाना पतितैर्बभूव; समन्ततो द्यौरिव कालमेघैः

The earth was strewn with large numbers of warriors, chariots, elephants and horses, mangled by the arrows. They fell down on the ground and looked like dark clouds in the sky.

पृथ्वी बड़ी संख्या में योद्धाओं, रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों से पटी हुई थी, जो बाणों से घायल हो गये थे। वे भूमि पर गिर पड़े और आकाश में काले बादलों के समान दिखाई देने लगे।

शैनेयभीमार्जुनवाहिनीपा;ञ्शैब्याभिमन्यू सह काशिराज्ञा अन्यांश्च वीरान्समरे प्रमृद्ना;द्द्रोणः सुतानां तव भूतिकामः

Desiring the prosperity of your sons, Droṇa crushed the armies of Śini-s's descendant, Bhīmā, Arjuna, Śibi, Abhimanyu, the king of Kāśi and many other brave ones in that battle.

आपके पुत्रों की समृद्धि की इच्छा से द्रोण ने उस युद्ध में शिनिवंशज भीम, अर्जुन, शिबि, काशी के राजा अभिमन्यु तथा अन्य कई शूरवीरों की सेनाओं को कुचल दिया।

एतानि चान्यानि च कौरवेन्द्र; कर्माणि कृत्वा समरे महात्मा प्रताप्य लोकानिव कालसूर्यो; द्रोणो गतः स्वर्गमितो हि राजन्

O Indra among Kaurava-s! The great-souled one performed this, and many other deeds, in the battle. O king! Having scorched the world, like the sun at the time of destruction, Droṇa went to heaven.

हे कौरवों में इंद्र! उस महान आत्मा ने युद्ध में यह तथा अन्य अनेक कार्य किये। हे राजा! प्रलय के समय सूर्य की भाँति संसार को जलाकर द्रोण स्वर्ग चले गये।

एवं रुक्मरथः शूरो हत्वा शतसहस्रशः पाण्डवानां रणे योधान्पार्षतेन निपातितः

On his golden chariot, the brave one killed hundreds and thousands of Pāṇḍava warriors in the battle and was brought down by Pārṣata.

अपने सुनहरे रथ पर सवार उस बहादुर ने युद्ध में सैकड़ों और हजारों पांडव योद्धाओं को मार डाला और परशात द्वारा उसे मार गिराया गया।

अक्षौहिणीमभ्यधिकां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् निहत्य पश्चाद्धृतिमानगच्छत्परमां गतिम्

He killed more than two akṣauhiṇī-s of brave ones who never retreated. After that, the wise one attained the supreme objective.

उन्होंने दो से अधिक अक्षौहिणी वीरों को मार डाला जो कभी पीछे नहीं हटे। उसके बाद उस बुद्धिमान को परम लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति हुई।

पाण्डवैः सह पाञ्चालैरशिवैः क्रूरकर्मभिः हतो रुक्मरथो राजन्कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्

O king! The one on the golden chariot performed extremely difficult deeds and was then killed by the Pāṇḍava-s and the Pāñcāla-s, the performers of inauspicious and cruel deeds.

हे राजा! स्वर्ण रथ पर सवार व्यक्ति ने अत्यंत कठिन कार्य किए और फिर अशुभ और क्रूर कर्म करने वाले पांडवों और पंचालों द्वारा उसे मार डाला गया।

ततो निनादो भूतानामाकाशे समजायत सैन्यानां च ततो राजन्नाचार्ये निहते युधि

O king! When the preceptor was killed in the battle, there was a roar among the beings in the firmament and also among the soldiers.

हे राजा! जब युद्ध में गुरु मारा गया, तो आकाश में प्राणियों और सैनिकों में भी दहाड़ मच गई।

द्यां धरां खं दिशो वारि प्रदिशश्चानुनादयन् अहो धिगिति भूतानां शब्दः समभवन्महान्

This resounded in heaven, the earth, the sky, the directions and the sub-directions. A great sound of "shame" was heard among all the beings.

यह स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी, आकाश, दिशाओं और उपदिशाओं में गूंज उठा। समस्त प्राणियों में 'शर्म' की महान ध्वनि सुनाई दी।

देवताः पितरश्चैव पूर्वे ये चास्य बान्धवाः ददृशुर्निहतं तत्र भारद्वाजं महारथम्

The gods, the ancestors and all those who were his relatives saw that Bhāradvāja's mahāratha son was slain.

देवताओं, पितरों तथा उनके सभी रिश्तेदारों ने देखा कि भारद्वाज का महारथ पुत्र मारा गया।

पाण्डवास्तु जयं लब्ध्वा सिंहनादान्प्रचक्रिरे तेन नादेन महता समकम्पत मेदिनी

Having obtained victory, the Pāṇḍava-s roared like lions. The earth trembled because of that loud roar.

विजय पाकर पाण्डव सिंह की भाँति दहाड़ने लगे। उस तीव्र गर्जना से पृथ्वी कांप उठी।
