जनमेजय उवाच धर्मागतेन त्यागेन भगवन्सर्वमस्ति चेत् एतन्मे सर्वमाचक्ष्व कुशलो ह्यसि भाषितुम्

Janamejaya said: O Blessed One, if everything exists through the renunciation of Dharma, Please tell me all this, for you are skilled in speaking.

जनमेजय ने कहा: हे धन्य, यदि धर्म के त्याग से सब कुछ मौजूद है, तो कृपया मुझे यह सब बताएं, क्योंकि आप बोलने में कुशल हैं।

ततोञ्छवृत्तेर्यद्वृत्तं सक्तुदाने फलं महत् कथितं मे महद्ब्रह्मंस्तथ्यमेतदसंशयम्

Then, O Brahman, you have told me the great fruit of the practice of begging for alms and giving flour. This is certainly true.

तब हे ब्राह्मण, आपने मुझे भिक्षा माँगने और आटा देने के महान फल के बारे में बताया है। ये निश्चित तौर पर सच है.

कथं हि सर्वयज्ञेषु निश्चयः परमो भवेत् एतदर्हसि मे वक्तुं निखिलेन द्विजर्षभ

How can there be certainty in all sacrifices? You are worthy of telling me this in its entirety, O bull among Brahmins.

सभी यज्ञों में निश्चितता कैसे हो सकती है? हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ बैल, आप ही मुझे यह बात पूरी तरह से बताने के योग्य हैं।

वैशंपायन उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् अगस्त्यस्य महायज्ञे पुरावृत्तमरिंदम

Vaishampayana said: Here, I will relate this ancient story, which took place in the past at Agastya's great sacrifice, O subduer of enemies.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यहाँ, मैं इस प्राचीन कहानी को सुनाऊंगा, जो अतीत में अगस्त्य के महान यज्ञ में घटित हुई थी, हे शत्रुओं के दमनकर्ता।

पुरागस्त्यो महातेजा दीक्षां द्वादशवार्षिकीम् प्रविवेश महाराज सर्वभूतहिते रतः

Formerly, the very lustrous Agastya, O great king, entered into a twelve-year long penance, being engaged in the welfare of all beings.

पूर्वकाल में, अत्यंत तेजस्वी अगस्त्य, हे महान राजा, ने सभी प्राणियों के कल्याण में संलग्न होकर बारह वर्ष की लंबी तपस्या की।

तत्राग्निकल्पा होतार आसन्सत्रे महात्मनः मूलाहारा निराहाराः साश्मकुट्टा मरीचिपाः

There were the Hotṛ priests who were like fire, who were great souls, at the sacrifice. They were root-eaters, non-eaters, stone-crushers, drinkers of dew.

यज्ञ में होत्र पुजारी थे जो अग्नि के समान थे, जो महान आत्मा थे। वे जड़ खाने वाले, न खाने वाले, पत्थर तोड़ने वाले, ओस पीने वाले थे।

परिघृष्टिका वैघसिकाः संप्रक्षालास्तथैव च यतयो भिक्षवश्चात्र बभूवुः पर्यवस्थिताः

The Parihṛṣṭikas, the Vaighasikas, the Samprakṣālas, and so forth, The ascetics and monks were gathered there.

परिहृष्टिक, वैघसिक, सम्प्रक्षाल आदि, तपस्वी और भिक्षु वहाँ एकत्र हुए थे।

सर्वे प्रत्यक्षधर्माणो जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः दमे स्थिताश्च ते सर्वे दम्भमोहविवर्जिताः

All of them were endowed with direct perception of the Dharma, had conquered anger and controlled the senses, and were established in self-restraint, free from hypocrisy and delusion.

वे सभी धर्म की प्रत्यक्ष अनुभूति से संपन्न थे, उन्होंने क्रोध पर विजय प्राप्त की थी और इंद्रियों को नियंत्रित किया था, और पाखंड और भ्रम से मुक्त होकर आत्म-संयम में स्थापित थे।

वृत्ते शुद्धे स्थिता नित्यमिन्द्रियैश्चाप्यवाहिताः उपासते स्म तं यज्ञं भुञ्जानास्ते महर्षयः

They were always established in pure conduct, not carried away by the senses. Those great sages, while eating, attended that sacrifice.

वे सदैव शुद्ध आचरण में स्थित रहते थे, इंद्रियों के बहकावे में नहीं आते थे। भोजन करते-करते वे महर्षिगण उस यज्ञ में सम्मिलित हो गये।

यथाशक्त्या भगवता तदन्नं समुपार्जितम् तस्मिन्सत्रे तु यत्किंचिदयोग्यं तत्र नाभवत् तथा ह्यनेकैर्मुनिभिर्महान्तः क्रतवः कृताः

As much as he could, the Blessed One had that food collected. In that sacrifice, there was nothing that was not suitable. Thus, many great sacrifices were performed by many sages.

जितना संभव हो सका, भगवान ने वह भोजन एकत्र किया। उस बलिदान में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं था जो उपयुक्त न हो। इस प्रकार अनेक ऋषियों द्वारा अनेक महान यज्ञ किये गये।

एवंविधेस्त्वगस्त्यस्य वर्तमाने महाध्वरे न ववर्ष सहस्राक्षस्तदा भरतसत्तम

In this way, when Agastya was performing a great sacrifice, The thousand-eyed one did not rain, O best of the Bharata lineage.

इस प्रकार, जब अगस्त्य एक महान यज्ञ कर रहे थे, तो हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ, हजार आंखों वाले ने वर्षा नहीं की।

ततः कर्मान्तरे राजन्नगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः कथेयमभिनिर्वृत्ता मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम्

Then, O king, in another act, of the great-souled Agastya, This story came about, of the sages of purified souls.

फिर, हे राजा, एक अन्य कार्य में, महान आत्मा वाले अगस्त्य की, यह कहानी शुद्ध आत्माओं वाले ऋषियों के बारे में आई।

अगस्त्यो यजमानोऽसौ ददात्यन्नं विमत्सरः न च वर्षति पर्जन्यः कथमन्नं भविष्यति

Agastya, the sacrificer, is giving food without miserliness. But the rain god is not raining. How will there be food?

यज्ञकर्ता अगस्त्य बिना कृपणता के भोजन दे रहे हैं। लेकिन बारिश के देवता बारिश नहीं कर रहे हैं. भोजन कैसे होगा?

सत्रं चेदं महद्विप्रा मुनेर्द्वादशवार्षिकम् न वर्षिष्यति देवश्च वर्षाण्येतानि द्वादश

And this sacrifice of the sage will last twelve years, O Brahmins, And the god will not rain for those twelve years.

और हे ब्राह्मणों, ऋषि का यह यज्ञ बारह वर्षों तक चलेगा, और देवता उन बारह वर्षों तक वर्षा नहीं करेंगे।

एतद्भवन्तः संचिन्त्य महर्षेरस्य धीमतः अगस्त्यस्यातितपसः कर्तुमर्हन्त्यनुग्रहम्

Having considered this, you should grant your favor to this wise and greatly ascetic maharshi, Agastya.

इस पर विचार करके आपको इन बुद्धिमान तथा परम तपस्वी महर्षि अगस्त्य पर अपनी कृपा करनी चाहिये।

इत्येवमुक्ते वचने ततोऽगस्त्यः प्रतापवान् प्रोवाचेदं वचो वाग्मी प्रसाद्य शिरसा मुनीन्

When this was said, then the powerful Agastya, the eloquent one, having pleased the sages by bowing his head, spoke these words:

जब यह कहा गया, तब महातेजस्वी अगस्त्य ने सिर झुकाकर ऋषियों को प्रसन्न करके ये वचन कहे-

यदि द्वादशवर्षाणि न वर्षिष्यति वासवः चिन्तायज्ञं करिष्यामि विधिरेष सनातनः

If Vāsava (Indra) does not rain for twelve years, I shall perform the contemplation sacrifice, for this is the eternal rule.

यदि वासव (इंद्र) बारह वर्ष तक वर्षा न करें तो मैं चिंतन यज्ञ करूंगा, क्योंकि यह शाश्वत नियम है।

यदि द्वादशवर्षाणि न वर्षिष्यति वासवः व्यायामेनाहरिष्यामि यज्ञानन्यानतिव्रतान्

If Vāsava does not rain for twelve years, I will perform the other sacrifices with great vows through exertion.

यदि बारह वर्षों तक वासव में वर्षा नहीं हुई तो मैं परिश्रमपूर्वक बड़े व्रतों के साथ अन्य यज्ञ करूंगा।

बीजयज्ञो मयायं वै बहुवर्षसमाचितः बीजैः कृतैः करिष्ये च नात्र विघ्नो भविष्यति

This sacrifice of seeds has been accumulated by me for many years. Having performed with seeds, I shall perform. There will be no obstacle here.

बीजों का यह बलिदान मेरे द्वारा कई वर्षों से संचित किया गया है। बीजों से प्रदर्शन करके मैं प्रदर्शन करूंगा। यहां कोई रुकावट नहीं होगी.

नेदं शक्यं वृथा कर्तुं मम सत्रं कथंचन वर्षिष्यतीह वा देवो न वा देवो भविष्यति

This sacrifice of mine cannot be performed in vain in any way. The god will rain here or the god will not be.

मेरा यह बलिदान किसी भी प्रकार व्यर्थ नहीं जा सकता। यहां भगवान बरसेंगे या भगवान नहीं होंगे.

अथ वाभ्यर्थनामिन्द्रः कुर्यान्न त्विह कामतः स्वयमिन्द्रो भविष्यामि जीवयिष्यामि च प्रजाः

Or Indra may make a request, but not here out of desire. I myself shall become Indra and shall revive the creatures.

या इंद्र अनुरोध कर सकते हैं, लेकिन यहां इच्छा से नहीं। मैं स्वयं इन्द्र बनूँगा और प्राणियों को पुनर्जीवित करूँगा।

यो यदाहारजातश्च स तथैव भविष्यति विशेषं चैव कर्तास्मि पुनः पुनरतीव हि

And he who is born from such food will be like that. And I will make a distinction again and again.

और जो ऐसे भोजन से पैदा होगा, वह वैसा ही होगा। और मैं बार-बार भेद करूंगा।

अद्येह स्वर्णमभ्येतु यच्चान्यद्वसु दुर्लभम् त्रिषु लोकेषु यच्चास्ति तदिहागच्छतां स्वयम्

May gold come here today, and whatever other wealth is difficult to obtain, And whatever exists in the three worlds, may it come here by itself.

आज सोना यहां आ जाए, और जो भी अन्य धन प्राप्त करना कठिन है, और जो कुछ भी तीनों लोकों में मौजूद है, वह स्वयं यहां आ जाए।

दिव्याश्चाप्सरसां संघाः सगन्धर्वाः सकिंनराः विश्वावसुश्च ये चान्ये तेऽप्युपासन्तु वः सदा

The divine hosts of apsarases, gandharvas, and kinnaras, And Vishvavasu and others, may they always attend to you.

अप्सराओं, गंधर्वों, किन्नरों और विश्वावसु तथा अन्यों के दिव्य यजमान सदैव आपकी सेवा में लगे रहें।

उत्तरेभ्यः कुरुभ्यश्च यत्किंचिद्वसु विद्यते सर्वं तदिह यज्ञे मे स्वयमेवोपतिष्ठतु स्वर्गं स्वर्गसदश्चैव धर्मश्च स्वयमेव तु

Whatever wealth there is in the northern Kurus, may it all come to me in this sacrifice, of its own accord. Heaven, the abode of heaven, and Dharma itself,

उत्तर कौरवों में जो भी धन है, वह सब इस यज्ञ में स्वतः ही मेरे पास आ जाये। स्वर्ग, स्वर्ग का निवास, और स्वयं धर्म,

इत्युक्ते सर्वमेवैतदभवत्तस्य धीमतः ततस्ते मुनयो दृष्ट्वा मुनेस्तस्य तपोबलम् विस्मिता वचनं प्राहुरिदं सर्वे महार्थवत्

Thus spoken, all this became of that wise one. Then those sages, seeing the power of austerities of that sage, amazed, spoke these words, all of great meaning.

इस प्रकार बोलने से यह सब उस बुद्धिमान का हो गया। तब उन ऋषियों ने उस ऋषि की तपस्या की शक्ति को देखकर आश्चर्यचकित होकर बड़े अर्थ वाले ये शब्द कहे।

प्रीताः स्म तव वाक्येन न त्विच्छामस्तपोव्ययम् स्वैरेव यज्ञैस्तुष्टाः स्मो न्यायेनेच्छामहे वयम्

We are pleased with your words, but we do not wish to waste our austerities. We are satisfied with our own sacrifices, and we wish for justice.

हम आपकी बातों से प्रसन्न हैं, परंतु हम अपनी तपस्या व्यर्थ नहीं करना चाहते। हम अपने बलिदानों से संतुष्ट हैं और न्याय की कामना करते हैं।

यज्ञान्दीक्षास्तथा होमान्यच्चान्यन्मृगयामहे तन्नोऽस्तु स्वकृतैर्यज्ञैर्नान्यतो मृगयामहे

We seek sacrifices, initiations, oblations, and whatever else we desire. Let that be ours through our own sacrifices, not through hunting.

हम बलिदान, दीक्षा, आहुति और जो कुछ भी हम चाहते हैं, चाहते हैं। वह हमारा अपने बलिदानों से बने, न कि शिकार से।

न्यायेनोपार्जिताहाराः स्वकर्मनिरता वयम् वेदांश्च ब्रह्मचर्येण न्यायतः प्रार्थयामहे

We who are engaged in our own duties, who have acquired food by right means, We seek the Vedas by right means, by celibacy.

हम जो अपने कर्तव्यों में लगे हुए हैं, जिन्होंने उचित तरीकों से भोजन प्राप्त किया है, हम ब्रह्मचर्य द्वारा सही तरीकों से वेदों की खोज करते हैं।

न्यायेनोत्तरकालं च गृहेभ्यो निःसृता वयम् धर्मदृष्टैर्विधिद्वारैस्तपस्तप्स्यामहे वयम्

And, in accordance with the rules, we shall leave our homes and Practice austerities by the means prescribed by the Dharma.

और, नियमों के अनुसार, हम अपने घरों को छोड़ देंगे और धर्म द्वारा निर्धारित तरीकों से तपस्या करेंगे।

भवतः सम्यगेषा हि बुद्धिर्हिंसाविवर्जिता एतामहिंसां यज्ञेषु ब्रूयास्त्वं सततं प्रभो

Your mind is indeed right, free from violence. O Lord, please always speak about this non-violence in sacrifices.

आपका मन सचमुच सही है, हिंसा से मुक्त है। हे भगवान, कृपया यज्ञों में सदैव इस अहिंसा के बारे में बोलें।

प्रीतास्ततो भविष्यामो वयं द्विजवरोत्तम विसर्जिताः समाप्तौ च सत्रादस्माद्व्रजामहे

Then we shall be pleased, O best of Brāhmaṇas. When the sacrifice is over, we shall be dismissed and go away.

तब हम प्रसन्न होंगे, हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ। जब यज्ञ पूरा हो जायेगा तो हमें बर्खास्त कर दिया जायेगा और चले जायेंगे।

वैशंपायन उवाच तथा कथयतामेव देवराजः पुरंदरः ववर्ष सुमहातेजा दृष्ट्वा तस्य तपोबलम्

Vaishampayana said While they were speaking thus, the king of the gods, Purandara, seeing the power of his austerities, showered down with great splendor.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा, जब वे इस प्रकार बोल रहे थे, देवताओं के राजा, पुरंदर, उनकी तपस्या की शक्ति को देखकर, महान वैभव से प्रसन्न हुए।

असमाप्तौ च यज्ञस्य तस्यामितपराक्रमः निकामवर्षी देवेन्द्रो बभूव जनमेजय

And when the sacrifice was not yet finished, the king of the gods, of infinite prowess, began to rain in abundance, O Janamejaya.

और जब यज्ञ अभी समाप्त नहीं हुआ था, तब अनंत पराक्रम वाले देवताओं के राजा ने भारी वर्षा शुरू कर दी, हे जनमेजय।

प्रसादयामास च तमगस्त्यं त्रिदशेश्वरः स्वयमभ्येत्य राजर्षे पुरस्कृत्य बृहस्पतिम्

And the lord of the gods propitiated Agastya, Approaching him in person, O royal sage, placing Brihaspati in front.

और हे राजर्षि, देवताओं के स्वामी ने स्वयं बृहस्पति को सामने रखकर, अगस्त्य को प्रसन्न किया।

ततो यज्ञसमाप्तौ तान्विससर्ज महामुनीन् अगस्त्यः परमप्रीतः पूजयित्वा यथाविधि

Then, at the conclusion of the sacrifice, he dismissed those great sages, Agastya, greatly pleased, having worshipped them according to proper rites.

फिर, यज्ञ के समापन पर, उन्होंने उन महान ऋषियों, अगस्त्य को, बहुत प्रसन्न होकर, उचित रीति से उनकी पूजा करके बर्खास्त कर दिया।
