ब्राह्मण उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् निबोध दशहोतॄणां विधानमिह यादृशम्

The Brahmin said: Here, I will relate an ancient story. Listen to the rules of the ten fire-offerings here.

ब्राह्मण ने कहा: यहाँ मैं एक प्राचीन कथा सुनाता हूँ। यहां दस अग्निहोत्रों के नियम सुनें।

सर्वमेवात्र विज्ञेयं चित्तं ज्ञानमवेक्षते रेतः शरीरभृत्काये विज्ञाता तु शरीरभृत्

All this should be known as the mind, which perceives knowledge. The semen is the body-bearer, and the knower is the body-bearer.

यह सब ज्ञान को ग्रहण करने वाला मन जानना चाहिए। वीर्य शरीर धारण करने वाला है और ज्ञाता शरीर धारण करने वाला है।

शरीरभृद्गार्हपत्यस्तस्मादन्यः प्रणीयते ततश्चाहवनीयस्तु तस्मिन्संक्षिप्यते हविः

The Garhapatya is the bearer of the body, from which another is led. And from that the Ahavaniya, into which the oblation is collected.

गार्हपत्य शरीर का वाहक है, जिससे दूसरे का नेतृत्व होता है। और उससे अहवनिया, जिसमें हवि एकत्रित की जाती है।

ततो वाचस्पतिर्जज्ञे समानः पर्यवेक्षते रूपं भवति वै व्यक्तं तदनुद्रवते मनः

Then Vācaspati is born, and the mind follows, looking on. The form becomes manifest, and the mind runs after it.

तब वाचस्पति का जन्म होता है, और मन उसका अनुसरण करता है, देखता रहता है। रूप प्रकट हो जाता है और मन उसके पीछे दौड़ता है।

ब्राह्मण्युवाच कस्माद्वागभवत्पूर्वं कस्मात्पश्चान्मनोऽभवत् मनसा चिन्तितं वाक्यं यदा समभिपद्यते

The Brāhmaṇī said: Why was speech first? Why was mind later? When the words thought by the mind are accomplished,

केन विज्ञानयोगेन मतिश्चित्तं समास्थिता समुन्नीता नाध्यगच्छत्को वैनां प्रतिषेधति

Having gone to speech and mind, they asked the Self of beings: "Please tell us which is superior between us. O Lord, resolve our doubt."

Then the Blessed One said to Sarasvati, "Mind." Then Speech said to him, "I am the wish-granting cow."

स्थावरं जङ्गमं चैव विद्ध्युभे मनसी मम स्थावरं मत्सकाशे वै जङ्गमं विषये तव

Know both the immobile and the mobile to be in my mind. The immobile is near me, the mobile is in your domain.

अचल और चल दोनों को मेरे मन में स्थित जानो। अचल मेरे पास है, चल तेरे अधिकार में है।

यस्तु ते विषयं गच्छेन्मन्त्रो वर्णः स्वरोऽपि वा तन्मनो जङ्गमं नाम तस्मादसि गरीयसी

But he who goes to your domain, whether mantra, syllable, or sound, That mind is called mobile, therefore you are heavier.

परन्तु जो आपके क्षेत्र में जाता है, चाहे मन्त्र हो, चाहे अक्षर हो, चाहे ध्वनि हो, वह मन गतिशील कहलाता है, इसलिये आप भारी हैं।

यस्मादसि च मा वोचः स्वयमभ्येत्य शोभने तस्मादुच्छ्वासमासाद्य न वक्ष्यसि सरस्वति

Since you yourself have come and spoken to me, O auspicious one, therefore, having obtained breath, O Sarasvati, you will not speak.

चूँकि तुमने स्वयं आकर मुझसे बात की है, हे शुभ, इसलिए, श्वास प्राप्त करके, हे सरस्वती, तुम नहीं बोलोगी।

प्राणापानान्तरे देवी वाग्वै नित्यं स्म तिष्ठति प्रेर्यमाणा महाभागे विना प्राणमपानती प्रजापतिमुपाधावत्प्रसीद भगवन्निति

The goddess resides in the space between the prāṇa and apāna, always in the form of speech. O greatly fortunate one, she is impelled, without the prāṇa, by the

ततः प्राणः प्रादुरभूद्वाचमाप्याययन्पुनः तस्मादुच्छ्वासमासाद्य न वाग्वदति कर्हिचित्

Then Prāṇa arose, nourishing Vāc again. Therefore, having attained Uccvāsa, Vāc never speaks.

गौरिव प्रस्रवत्येषा रसमुत्तमशालिनी सततं स्यन्दते ह्येषा शाश्वतं ब्रह्मवादिनी

Like a cow, she flows with the best of juices, She always flows, she is the eternal speaker of the Brahman.

वह गाय की तरह उत्तम रसों से युक्त है, वह सदैव प्रवाहित रहती है, वह ब्रह्म की शाश्वत वक्ता है।

दिव्यादिव्यप्रभावेन भारती गौः शुचिस्मिते एतयोरन्तरं पश्य सूक्ष्मयोः स्यन्दमानयोः

O you of a pure smile, by the power of the divine and the non-divine, the cow of Sarasvati is pure. See the difference between these two flowing subtle ones.

अनुत्पन्नेषु वाक्येषु चोद्यमाना सिसृक्षया किं नु पूर्वं ततो देवी व्याजहार सरस्वती

When the words were not yet produced, she was urged by the desire to create. What did the goddess Sarasvati say first then?

जब शब्द अभी तक निर्मित नहीं हुए थे, तब उनमें रचना करने की इच्छा जागृत हुई। तब देवी सरस्वती ने सबसे पहले क्या कहा?

प्राणेन या संभवते शरीरे; प्राणादपानं प्रतिपद्यते च उदानभूता च विसृज्य देहं; व्यानेन सर्वं दिवमावृणोति

The one who is born in the body by means of the prāṇa, and who attains apāna from the prāṇa, And who, having abandoned the body, becomes udāna,

जो प्राण के माध्यम से शरीर में जन्म लेता है, और जो प्राण से अपान को प्राप्त करता है, और जो शरीर को त्यागकर उदान बन जाता है,

ततः समाने प्रतितिष्ठतीह; इत्येव पूर्वं प्रजजल्प चापि तस्मान्मनः स्थावरत्वाद्विशिष्टं; तथा देवी जङ्गमत्वाद्विशिष्टा

Then, when the same thing is established here, it is said that the mind is superior to the immovable, and the goddess is superior to the movable.
