वसुदेव उवाच श्रुतवानस्मि वार्ष्णेय संग्रामं परमाद्भुतम् नराणां वदतां पुत्र कथोद्घातेषु नित्यशः

Vasudeva said: O Varshneya, I have heard about the extremely wonderful battle from men who always narrate it in their conversations.

वासुदेव ने कहा: हे वार्ष्णेय, मैंने उन मनुष्यों से अत्यंत अद्भुत युद्ध के बारे में सुना है जो हमेशा अपनी बातचीत में इसका वर्णन करते हैं।

त्वं तु प्रत्यक्षदर्शी च कार्यज्ञश्च महाभुज तस्मात्प्रब्रूहि संग्रामं याथातथ्येन मेऽनघ

You are one who sees directly and knows the future, O mighty-armed one. Therefore, O sinless one, tell me the battle exactly as it is.

हे महाबाहो, आप प्रत्यक्ष देखने वाले और भविष्य जानने वाले व्यक्ति हैं। अत: हे निष्पाप, युद्ध का स्वरूप ठीक-ठीक मुझे बताइये।

यथा तदभवद्युद्धं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् भीष्मकर्णकृपद्रोणशल्यादिभिरनुत्तमम्

How that battle took place between the great-souled Pandavas and the incomparable Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Drona, Shalya and others,

वह युद्ध किस प्रकार महाबली पाण्डवों तथा अतुलनीय भीष्म, कर्ण, कृपा, द्रोण, शल्य तथा अन्यों के बीच हुआ था,

अन्येषां क्षत्रियाणां च कृतास्त्राणामनेकशः नानावेषाकृतिमतां नानादेशनिवासिनाम्

of other Kshatriyas, who were skilled in the use of weapons, of various forms and appearances, and who lived in various countries,

अन्य क्षत्रिय, जो विभिन्न रूप और दिखावे वाले, हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल थे, और जो विभिन्न देशों में रहते थे,

इत्युक्तः पुण्डरीकाक्षः पित्रा मातुस्तदन्तिके शशंस कुरुवीराणां संग्रामे निधनं यथा

Thus addressed by his father, the lotus-eyed one, in the presence of his mother, related how the heroes of the Kurus met their death in the battle.

इस प्रकार उनके पिता कमलनयन ने अपनी माता की उपस्थिति में कहा कि किस प्रकार कौरवों के वीर युद्ध में वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए।

वासुदेव उवाच अत्यद्भुतानि कर्माणि क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम् बहुलत्वान्न संख्यातुं शक्यान्यब्दशतैरपि

Vasudeva said: The extremely wonderful deeds of the great-souled Kshatriyas Cannot be enumerated even in hundreds of years due to their abundance.

वासुदेव ने कहा: महान आत्मा वाले क्षत्रियों के अत्यंत अद्भुत कार्यों की गणना उनकी बहुतायत के कारण सैकड़ों वर्षों में भी नहीं की जा सकती।

प्राधान्यतस्तु गदतः समासेनैव मे शृणु कर्माणि पृथिवीशानां यथावदमरद्युते

But I shall tell you the principal ones, listen to them briefly. O you of the splendour of the gods, listen to the deeds of the kings of the earth as they really are.

परन्तु मुख्य बातें मैं तुम्हें बताऊंगा, उन्हें संक्षेप में सुनो। हे देवताओं के तेजो, पृथ्वी के राजाओं के कार्यों को वैसे ही सुनो जैसे वे वास्तव में हैं।

भीष्मः सेनापतिरभूदेकादशचमूपतिः कौरव्यः कौरवेयाणां देवानामिव वासवः

Bhishma was the commander-in-chief, the lord of eleven divisions of the army, the son of the Kurus, like Vasava of the gods.

भीष्म सेनापति, ग्यारह प्रभागों के स्वामी, देवताओं के वासव की तरह कौरवों के पुत्र थे।

शिखण्डी पाण्डुपुत्राणां नेता सप्तचमूपतिः बभूव रक्षितो धीमान्धीमता सव्यसाचिना

The intelligent Shikhándin, the leader of the seven divisions of the Pándavas, was protected by the intelligent Árjuna.

पांडवों के सात प्रभागों के नेता, बुद्धिमान शिखंडिन, बुद्धिमान अर्जुन द्वारा संरक्षित थे।

तेषां तदभवद्युद्धं दशाहानि महात्मनाम् कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च सुमहद्रोमहर्षणम्

For ten days there was a battle between those great souls, between the Kurus and the Pandavas, which was very frightening.

दस दिनों तक उन महात्माओं के बीच, कौरवों और पांडवों के बीच युद्ध होता रहा, जो बहुत भयानक था।

ततः शिखण्डी गाङ्गेयमयुध्यन्तं महाहवे जघान बहुभिर्बाणैः सह गाण्डीवधन्वना

Then Shikhandi, together with the Gandīva-bowed one, struck the son of Ganga, who was fighting in the great battle, with many arrows.

तदनन्तर शिखण्डी ने गाण्डीव-धनुष सहित अनेक बाणों से उस महान समरांगण में युद्ध कर रहे गंगापुत्र को घायल कर दिया।

अकरोत्स ततः कालं शरतल्पगतो मुनिः अयनं दक्षिणं हित्वा संप्राप्ते चोत्तरायणे

Then the sage lay down on a bed of arrows and passed the time. When the southern solstice was over and the northern solstice had arrived,

तब ऋषि बाणों की शय्या पर लेट गये और समय व्यतीत करने लगे। जब दक्षिणी संक्रांति समाप्त हो गई और उत्तरी संक्रांति आ गई,

ततः सेनापतिरभूद्द्रोणोऽस्त्रविदुषां वरः प्रवीरः कौरवेन्द्रस्य काव्यो दैत्यपतेरिव

Then Drona became the general, the best of those who know the use of weapons, the hero of the lord of the Kurus, like Kavya of the lord of the demons.

तब द्रोण सेनापति बन गये, शस्त्रों का प्रयोग जानने वालों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ, कौरवों के स्वामी के वीर, राक्षसों के स्वामी के काव्य के समान।

अक्षौहिणीभिः शिष्टाभिर्नवभिर्द्विजसत्तमः संवृतः समरश्लाघी गुप्तः कृपवृषादिभिः

O best of Brahmanas, he was surrounded by nine remaining Akṣauhiṇīs, and was protected by Kripa, Vrisha and others who were fond of fighting.

हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ, वह शेष नौ अक्षौहिणीयों से घिरा हुआ था, और कृपा, वृष तथा अन्य लोग जो युद्ध के शौकीन थे, उनकी रक्षा कर रहे थे।

धृष्टद्युम्नस्त्वभून्नेता पाण्डवानां महास्त्रवित् गुप्तो भीमेन तेजस्वी मित्रेण वरुणो यथा

Dhrishtadyumna was the leader of the Pandavas, a great wielder of weapons. He was protected by the brilliant Bhima, like Varuna by Mitra.

धृष्टद्युम्न पांडवों का नेता था, जो एक महान हथियार धारक था। उसकी रक्षा तेजस्वी भीम ने की थी, जैसे वरुण ने मित्र द्वारा की थी।

पञ्चसेनापरिवृतो द्रोणप्रेप्सुर्महामनाः पितुर्निकारान्संस्मृत्य रणे कर्माकरोन्महत्

The great-minded one, surrounded by five armies, desiring to reach Drona, Remembering his father's ill-treatment, performed great deeds in battle.

पाँच सेनाओं से घिरे हुए, द्रोण तक पहुँचने की इच्छा से, अपने पिता के दुर्व्यवहार को याद करके, महान मन वाले ने युद्ध में महान कार्य किए।

तस्मिंस्ते पृथिवीपाला द्रोणपार्षतसंगरे नानादिगागता वीराः प्रायशो निधनं गताः

In that battle between Drona and Parshata, most of the warriors who had come from various directions met their end.

द्रोण और परशत के बीच हुए उस युद्ध में विभिन्न दिशाओं से आए अधिकांश योद्धाओं का अंत हो गया।

दिनानि पञ्च तद्युद्धमभूत्परमदारुणम् ततो द्रोणः परिश्रान्तो धृष्टद्युम्नवशं गतः

For five days there was a terrible battle. Then Drona, exhausted, fell into the power of Dhrishtadyumna.

पाँच दिनों तक भयंकर युद्ध होता रहा। तब द्रोण थककर धृष्टद्युम्न के वश में हो गये।

ततः सेनापतिरभूत्कर्णो दौर्योधने बले अक्षौहिणीभिः शिष्टाभिर्वृतः पञ्चभिराहवे

Then Karna became the general of the army of the sons of Dhritarashtra, surrounded by the remaining five divisions of the army in the battle.

तब कर्ण धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों की सेना का सेनापति बन गया, जो युद्ध में सेना के शेष पांच डिवीजनों से घिरा हुआ था।

तिस्रस्तु पाण्डुपुत्राणां चम्वो बीभत्सुपालिताः हतप्रवीरभूयिष्ठा बभूवुः समवस्थिताः

The three chariots of the sons of Pandu, protected by Bibhatsu, remained with most of their heroes slain.

बिभत्सु द्वारा संरक्षित पांडु पुत्रों के तीन रथ अपने अधिकांश वीरों के मारे जाने के बावजूद बचे रहे।

ततः पार्थं समासाद्य पतंग इव पावकम् पञ्चत्वमगमत्सौतिर्द्वितीयेऽहनि दारुणे

Then, approaching Partha like a moth to a fire, Sauti met his end on the second day of the terrible battle.

फिर, पतंगे की तरह आग के पास पार्थ के पास पहुँचते हुए, भयानक युद्ध के दूसरे दिन सौति का अंत हो गया।

हते कर्णे तु कौरव्या निरुत्साहा हतौजसः अक्षौहिणीभिस्तिसृभिर्मद्रेशं पर्यवारयन्

When Karna was killed, the Kauravas lost their enthusiasm and strength. They surrounded the lord of the Madras with three divisions.

जब कर्ण मारा गया तो कौरवों का उत्साह और शक्ति नष्ट हो गई। उन्होंने तीन टुकड़ियों द्वारा मद्र के स्वामी को घेर लिया।

हतवाहनभूयिष्ठाः पाण्डवास्तु युधिष्ठिरम् अक्षौहिण्या निरुत्साहाः शिष्टया पर्यवारयन्

The Pāṇḍavas, with most of their chariots destroyed, surrounded Yudhishthira with the remaining army, which was without enthusiasm.

पांडवों ने, जिनके अधिकांश रथ नष्ट हो गए थे, शेष सेना के साथ, जो उत्साहहीन थी, युधिष्ठिर को घेर लिया।

अवधीन्मद्रराजानं कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः तस्मिंस्तथार्धदिवसे कर्म कृत्वा सुदुष्करम्

The king of the Kurus, Yudhishthira, killed the king of the Madras. Having performed that extremely difficult task in that half-day,

कौरवों के राजा युधिष्ठिर ने मद्र देश के राजा को मार डाला। उस आधे दिन में वह अत्यंत कठिन कार्य करके,

हते शल्ये तु शकुनिं सहदेवो महामनाः आहर्तारं कलेस्तस्य जघानामितविक्रमः

When Shalya was killed, the great-minded Sahadeva, of immeasurable valour, killed Shakuni, the bringer of that calamity.

जब शल्य मारा गया, तब अथाह पराक्रमी महामनस्वी सहदेव ने उस विपत्ति के जनक शकुनि को मार डाला।

निहते शकुनौ राजा धार्तराष्ट्रः सुदुर्मनाः अपाक्रामद्गदापाणिर्हतभूयिष्ठसैनिकः

When Śakuni was killed, the king of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, very unhappy, fled with a club in his hand, with most of his army killed.

जब शकुनि मारा गया, तो धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों का राजा, बहुत दुखी होकर, अपनी अधिकांश सेना के मारे जाने के साथ, हाथ में गदा लेकर भाग गया।

तमन्वधावत्संक्रुद्धो भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ह्रदे द्वैपायने चापि सलिलस्थं ददर्श तम्

The powerful Bhimasena angrily pursued him. And in the lake of Dvaipāyana, he saw him standing in the water.

शक्तिशाली भीमसेन ने क्रोधपूर्वक उसका पीछा किया। और द्वैपायन झील में उन्होंने उसे पानी में खड़ा देखा।

ततः शिष्टेन सैन्येन समन्तात्परिवार्य तम् उपोपविविशुर्हृष्टा ह्रदस्थं पञ्च पाण्डवाः

Then, surrounded on all sides by the remaining army, the delighted five Pandavas approached and sat down near the lake.

तब शेष सेना से चारों ओर से घिरे हुए हर्षित पाँचों पाण्डव सरोवर के पास आकर बैठ गये।

विगाह्य सलिलं त्वाशु वाग्बाणैर्भृशविक्षतः उत्थाय स गदापाणिर्युद्धाय समुपस्थितः

Having quickly entered the water, he was severely wounded by the arrows of speech. Rising up, he took up a club and approached for battle.

तेजी से पानी में घुसकर वाणी के बाणों से वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया। उठकर, उसने एक गदा उठाई और युद्ध के लिए आगे बढ़ा।

ततः स निहतो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो महामृधे भीमसेनेन विक्रम्य पश्यतां पृथिवीक्षिताम्

Then that king Dhritarashtra was slain in the great battle, by Bhimasena, who was victorious, while the kings of the earth looked on.

तब उस राजा धृतराष्ट्र को भीमसेन ने, जो विजयी था, महान युद्ध में मार डाला था, जबकि पृथ्वी के राजा देखते रह गए थे।

ततस्तत्पाण्डवं सैन्यं संसुप्तं शिबिरे निशि निहतं द्रोणपुत्रेण पितुर्वधममृष्यता

Then that army of the Pāṇḍavas, sleeping in their camp at night, was killed by Droṇa's son, who could not bear his father's death.

तब रात में अपने शिविर में सो रही पांडवों की सेना को द्रोण के पुत्र ने मार डाला, जो अपने पिता की मृत्यु को सहन नहीं कर सका।

हतपुत्रा हतबला हतमित्रा मया सह युयुधानद्वितीयेन पञ्च शिष्टाः स्म पाण्डवाः

With their sons and armies slain, and their friends, we are the five remaining Pandavas, together with Yuyudhana.

उनके पुत्रों और सेनाओं तथा उनके मित्रों के मारे जाने के बाद, हम युयुधान सहित शेष पांच पांडव हैं।

सहैव कृपभोजाभ्यां द्रौणिर्युद्धादमुच्यत युयुत्सुश्चापि कौरव्यो मुक्तः पाण्डवसंश्रयात्

Drona's son was released from the battle along with Kripa and Bhoja. And Yuyutsu, the son of a Kaurava, was released due to the protection of the

द्रोण के पुत्र को कृपा और भोज के साथ युद्ध से मुक्त कर दिया गया। और कौरव के पुत्र युयुत्सु को किसके संरक्षण के कारण रिहा किया गया था

निहते कौरवेन्द्रे च सानुबन्धे सुयोधने विदुरः संजयश्चैव धर्मराजमुपस्थितौ

When the lord of the Kauravas, Suyodhana, was killed along with his followers, Vidura and Sanjaya approached Dharmaraja.

जब कौरवों के स्वामी सुयोधन अपने अनुयायियों सहित मारे गए, तो विदुर और संजय धर्मराज के पास पहुंचे।

एवं तदभवद्युद्धमहान्यष्टादश प्रभो यत्र ते पृथिवीपाला निहताः स्वर्गमावसन्

Thus, O Lord, there was that battle for eighteen great years, where those kings of the earth were killed and went to heaven.

इस प्रकार, हे भगवान, अठारह महान वर्षों तक वह युद्ध हुआ, जिसमें पृथ्वी के वे राजा मारे गये और स्वर्ग चले गये।

वैशंपायन उवाच शृण्वतां तु महाराज कथां तां रोमहर्षणीम् दुःखहर्षपरिक्लेशा वृष्णीनामभवंस्तदा

Vaishmapayana said O great king, while listening to that story which causes the hair to stand on end, The Vrishnis became afflicted with sorrow, joy and distress.

वैश्मापायन ने कहा हे राजन, रोंगटे खड़े कर देने वाली उस कथा को सुनते-सुनते वृष्णि लोग दुःख, हर्ष और संकट से पीड़ित हो गये।
