Brahma said: The elders who see the truth say that renunciation is austerity. The Brahmanas who are established in the source of Brahman know knowledge to be the supreme Brahman.

Ashvamedhikaparvan · v2

Not far from here is the supreme Brahman, the basis of Vedic knowledge, Free from duality, without qualities, eternal, inconceivable, the supreme secret.

Ashvamedhikaparvan · v3

The wise ones see that place by means of knowledge and austerity. They are pure, having removed the darkness, having transcended the dust, and are stainless.

Ashvamedhikaparvan · v4

Ashvamedhikaparvan · v5

They say that austerity is like a lamp, and conduct is the means of accomplishing Dharma. But we know that knowledge alone is supreme, and renunciation is the best austerity.
