जनमेजय उवाच पितामहस्य मे यज्ञे धर्मपुत्रस्य धीमतः यदाश्चर्यमभूत्किंचित्तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति

Janamejaya said: At the sacrifice of my wise grandfather, the son of Dharma, Whatever wonders occurred, you should tell me.

जनमेजय ने कहा: मेरे बुद्धिमान दादा, धर्म के पुत्र के बलिदान पर, जो भी चमत्कार हुआ, उसे आपको मुझे बताना चाहिए।

वैशंपायन उवाच श्रूयतां राजशार्दूल महदाश्चर्यमुत्तमम् अश्वमेधे महायज्ञे निवृत्ते यदभूद्विभो

Vaishmapayana said O best of kings, listen to the great and excellent wonder That happened when the great sacrifice of the horse sacrifice was over.

वैश्मापायन ने कहा, हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ, उस महान और उत्कृष्ट आश्चर्य को सुनो जो तब हुआ था जब अश्व यज्ञ का महान यज्ञ समाप्त हो गया था।

तर्पितेषु द्विजाग्र्येषु ज्ञातिसंबन्धिबन्धुषु दीनान्धकृपणे चापि तदा भरतसत्तम

When the best of Brahmins were satisfied, and the relatives, kinsmen and friends, and the poor, blind and destitute, O best of Bharatas,

जब श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण संतुष्ट हो गए, और रिश्तेदार, रिश्तेदार और दोस्त, और गरीब, अंधे और निराश्रित, हे भरतश्रेष्ठ,

घुष्यमाणे महादाने दिक्षु सर्वासु भारत पतत्सु पुष्पवर्षेषु धर्मराजस्य मूर्धनि

When the great gift was being proclaimed in all directions, O descendant of Bharata, When flowers were falling like rain on the head of Dharmaraja,

जब सभी दिशाओं में महान उपहार की घोषणा की जा रही थी, हे भरत के वंशज, जब फूल धर्मराज के सिर पर बारिश की तरह गिर रहे थे,

बिलान्निष्क्रम्य नकुलो रुक्मपार्श्वस्तदानघ वज्राशनिसमं नादममुञ्चत विशां पते

Having emerged from the hole, Nakula, with golden sides, O sinless one, emitted a sound like a thunderbolt, O lord of the people.

छिद्र से बाहर आकर सुनहरे पक्षों वाले नकुल ने, हे प्रजापालक, वज्र के समान ध्वनि निकाली।

सकृदुत्सृज्य तं नादं त्रासयानो मृगद्विजान् मानुषं वचनं प्राह धृष्टो बिलशयो महान्

Having emitted that sound once, frightening the deer and birds, The bold one, the great one dwelling in the hole, spoke in human words:

एक बार वह ध्वनि निकाल कर, हिरणों और पक्षियों को डराते हुए, बिल में रहने वाला साहसी, महान व्यक्ति, मानवीय शब्दों में बोला:

सक्तुप्रस्थेन वो नायं यज्ञस्तुल्यो नराधिपाः उञ्छवृत्तेर्वदान्यस्य कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः

O kings, this sacrifice is not equal to a prastha of barley, of the generous one who lives in Kurukshetra and practices begging.

हे राजाओं, यह यज्ञ उस दानी पुरुष के जौ के प्रस्थ के बराबर भी नहीं है जो कुरूक्षेत्र में रहता है और भिक्षा मांगता है।

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नकुलस्य विशां पते विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः सर्वे ते ब्राह्मणर्षभाः

Hearing those words of Nakula, O lord of the earth, all those bull-like Brahmins were filled with great wonder.

नकुल के ये वचन सुनकर, हे पृथ्वीराज, उन सभी बैल जैसे ब्राह्मणों को महान् आश्चर्य हुआ।

ततः समेत्य नकुलं पर्यपृच्छन्त ते द्विजाः कुतस्त्वं समनुप्राप्तो यज्ञं साधुसमागमम्

Then the Brahmins approached Nakula and asked him: "From where have you come to this well-attended sacrifice?"

तब ब्राह्मण नकुल के पास पहुंचे और उनसे पूछा: "आप इस अच्छी तरह से उपस्थित यज्ञ में कहां से आए हैं?"

किं बलं परमं तुभ्यं किं श्रुतं किं परायणम् कथं भवन्तं विद्याम यो नो यज्ञं विगर्हसे

What is your supreme strength? What is your knowledge? What is your refuge? How shall we know you, who are reproaching our sacrifice?

आपकी सर्वोच्च शक्ति क्या है? आपका ज्ञान क्या है? आपका आश्रय क्या है? हम तुम्हें कैसे जानेंगे, जो हमारे बलिदान की निन्दा कर रहे हैं?

अविलुप्यागमं कृत्स्नं विधिज्ञैर्याजकैः कृतम् यथागमं यथान्यायं कर्तव्यं च यथाकृतम्

Not violating the entire scripture, performed by officiating priests who know the rules, As per scripture, as per proper procedure, and as per what has been done.

पूरे धर्मग्रंथ का उल्लंघन नहीं करना, कार्यवाहक पुजारियों द्वारा किया जाना जो नियमों को जानते हैं, शास्त्र के अनुसार, उचित प्रक्रिया के अनुसार, और जो किया गया है उसके अनुसार।

पूजार्हाः पूजिताश्चात्र विधिवच्छास्त्रचक्षुषा मन्त्रपूतं हुतश्चाग्निर्दत्तं देयममत्सरम्

Those who are worthy of worship have been worshipped here, according to the scriptures, with proper rites. The fire has been purified with mantras, and oblations have been offered. What is to be given has been given, without miserliness.

जो पूजनीय हैं, उनकी यहां शास्त्र विधि से विधि-विधान से पूजा की गई है। मंत्रों से अग्नि को शुद्ध किया गया और आहुतियां दी गईं. जो देना है दे दिया गया है, बिना कंजूसी के।

तुष्टा द्विजर्षभाश्चात्र दानैर्बहुविधैरपि क्षत्रियाश्च सुयुद्धेन श्राद्धैरपि पितामहाः

The best of Brahmins are pleased here by various kinds of gifts. The grandfathers are pleased by good fights and by the śrāddha rites.

यहाँ श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण विभिन्न प्रकार के दानों से प्रसन्न होते हैं। पितामह अच्छे झगड़ों और श्राद्ध कर्मों से प्रसन्न होते हैं।

पालनेन विशस्तुष्टाः कामैस्तुष्टा वरस्त्रियः अनुक्रोशैस्तथा शूद्रा दानशेषैः पृथग्जनाः

The Vaishyas are pleased by protection, the women by desires, the Shudras by compassion, and the common people by the remainder of the gifts.

वैश्य सुरक्षा से प्रसन्न होते हैं, स्त्रियाँ इच्छाओं से, शूद्र दया से और सामान्य लोग शेष दान से प्रसन्न होते हैं।

ज्ञातिसंबन्धिनस्तुष्टाः शौचेन च नृपस्य नः देवा हविर्भिः पुण्यैश्च रक्षणैः शरणागताः

The relatives and kinsmen are pleased with the purity of the king. The gods are pleased with oblations, merits, and protection of those who have sought refuge.

राजा की पवित्रता से सगे-संबंधी प्रसन्न होते हैं। देवता शरण मांगने वालों के प्रसाद, पुण्य और सुरक्षा से प्रसन्न होते हैं।

यदत्र तथ्यं तद्ब्रूहि सत्यसंध द्विजातिषु यथाश्रुतं यथादृष्टं पृष्टो ब्राह्मणकाम्यया

Tell me what is true among these, O you who are true to your word, among the twice-born. As you have heard and seen, tell me, O Brāhmaṇa, out of desire for the welfare of the Brāhmaṇas.

हे द्विजों, तुम जो अपने वचन के पक्के हो, मुझे बताओ कि इनमें क्या सत्य है। जैसा कि तुमने सुना और देखा है, हे ब्राह्मण, ब्राह्मणों के कल्याण की इच्छा से मुझे बताओ।

श्रद्धेयवाक्यः प्राज्ञस्त्वं दिव्यं रूपं बिभर्षि च समागतश्च विप्रैस्त्वं तत्त्वतो वक्तुमर्हसि

You are wise, your words are trustworthy, and you bear a divine form. And you have come together with the Brahmins. It is proper for you to speak the truth.

आप बुद्धिमान हैं, आपके शब्द भरोसेमंद हैं, और आप दिव्य रूप धारण करते हैं। और तुम ब्राह्मणों के साथ आये हो। सत्य बोलना ही तुम्हारे लिये उचित है।

इति पृष्टो द्विजैस्तैः स प्रहस्य नकुलोऽब्रवीत् नैषानृता मया वाणी प्रोक्ता दर्पेण वा द्विजाः

Thus asked by those Brahmins, Nakula laughed and said: "This speech of mine was not spoken out of arrogance, O Brahmins.

उन ब्राह्मणों के इस प्रकार पूछने पर नकुल हँसे और बोले, हे ब्राह्मणों, मेरी यह वाणी अहंकारवश नहीं कही गई है।

यन्मयोक्तमिदं किंचिद्युष्माभिश्चाप्युपश्रुतम् सक्तुप्रस्थेन वो नायं यज्ञस्तुल्यो नराधिपाः उञ्छवृत्तेर्वदान्यस्य कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः

Whatever I have said and whatever you have heard, O kings, this sacrifice is not equal to a prastha of barley. Of the generous one who lives in Kurukshetra and practices begging.

हे राजाओं, जो कुछ मैंने कहा है और जो कुछ तुमने सुना है, यह यज्ञ जौ के एक प्रस्थ के बराबर भी नहीं है। उस दानी का, जो कुरूक्षेत्र में रहता है और भिक्षावृत्ति करता है।

इत्यवश्यं मयैतद्वो वक्तव्यं द्विजपुंगवाः शृणुताव्यग्रमनसः शंसतो मे द्विजर्षभाः

Therefore, O best of Brahmins, I must tell you this. O best of Brahmins, listen with undivided minds to what I am telling.

अत: हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ, मुझे तुम्हें यह अवश्य बताना चाहिए। हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ, मैं जो कह रहा हूं उसे एकचित्त मन से सुनो।

अनुभूतं च दृष्टं च यन्मयाद्भुतमुत्तमम् उञ्छवृत्तेर्यथावृत्तं कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः

What I have experienced and seen, the wonderful and excellent, The way of life of one who lived in Kurukshetra.

मैंने जो अनुभव किया और देखा, अद्भुत और उत्कृष्ट, कुरूक्षेत्र में रहने वाले की जीवन शैली।

स्वर्गं येन द्विजः प्राप्तः सभार्यः ससुतस्नुषः यथा चार्धं शरीरस्य ममेदं काञ्चनीकृतम्

By whom the Brāhman attained heaven with his wife and son and daughter-in-law, and how half of my body was turned to gold,
