संजय उवाच ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरूणां भयवर्धनम् सृञ्जयैः सह राजेन्द्र घोरं देवासुरोपमम्

Sañjaya said: O Indra among kings! The terrible battle between the Kuru-s and the Sṛñjaya-s commenced. It was like that between the gods and the āsura-s and increased one's fear.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजाओं में इंद्र! कुरु-वंश और सृंजय-वंश के बीच भयानक युद्ध शुरू हुआ। यह देवताओं और असुरों के बीच जैसा था और इससे व्यक्ति का भय बढ़ गया।

नरा रथा गजौघाश्च सादिनश्च सहस्रशः वाजिनश्च पराक्रान्ताः समाजग्मुः परस्परम्

Men, chariots, crowds of elephants, thousands of riders and horses powerfully clashed against each other.

मनुष्य, रथ, हाथियों की भीड़, हजारों सवार और घोड़े एक-दूसरे से शक्तिशाली ढंग से भिड़ गए।

नागानां भीमरूपाणां द्रवतां निस्वनो महान् अश्रूयत यथा काले जलदानां नभस्तले

Elephants that were terrible in form rushed forward, and a great noise was heard, like clouds roaring in the sky during the rains.

भयानक रूप वाले हाथी आगे बढ़े और वर्षा के समय आकाश में बादलों की गड़गड़ाहट जैसा बड़ा शब्द सुनाई दिया।

नागैरभ्याहताः केचित्सरथा रथिनोऽपतन् व्यद्रवन्त रणे वीरा द्राव्यमाणा मदोत्कटैः

Some rāṭha-s were struck by the elephants and fell down from their chariots. In the battle, those brave ones were routed and driven away by those crazy ones.

कुछ रथ-हाथियों से टकरा गये और अपने रथों से नीचे गिर गये। युद्ध में उन वीरों को उन पागलों ने मार गिराया और भगा दिया।

हयौघान्पादरक्षांश्च रथिनस्तत्र शिक्षिताः शरैः संप्रेषयामासुः परलोकाय भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Large numbers of well-trained horses were stationed there, to guard the feet of the rāṭha-s. Because of the arrows, they were dispatched to the world of the hereafter.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! रथों के पैरों की सुरक्षा के लिए बड़ी संख्या में अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित घोड़े तैनात थे। बाणों के प्रभाव से वे परलोक सिधार गये।

सादिनः शिक्षिता राजन्परिवार्य महारथान् विचरन्तो रणेऽभ्यघ्नन्प्रासशक्त्यृष्टिभिस्तथा

O king! Trained horse riders surrounded the mahāratha-s and, roaming around in the battle, slew them with spears, javelins and swords.

हे राजा! प्रशिक्षित घुड़सवारों ने महारथियों को घेर लिया और युद्ध में घूम-घूम कर उन्हें भालों, भालों और तलवारों से मार डाला।

धन्विनः पुरुषाः केचित्संनिवार्य महारथान् एकं बहव आसाद्य प्रेषयेयुर्यमक्षयम्

Some men used bows to repulse the mahāratha-s. Many attacked one and dispatched him to Yāma's eternal abode.

कुछ लोगों ने महारथियों को खदेड़ने के लिए धनुष का प्रयोग किया। कई लोगों ने एक पर हमला किया और उसे यम के शाश्वत निवास में भेज दिया।

नागं रथवरांश्चान्ये परिवार्य महारथाः सोत्तरायुधिनं जघ्नुर्द्रवमाणा महारवम्

Mahāratha-s surrounded elephants and the best of chariots. They severed the heads of the warriors and drove them away, with a great roar.

महारथियों ने हाथियों और श्रेष्ठ रथों को घेर लिया। उन्होंने योद्धाओं के सिर काट दिये और बड़ी गर्जना के साथ उन्हें खदेड़ दिया।

तथा च रथिनं क्रुद्धं विकिरन्तं शरान्बहून् नागा जघ्नुर्महाराज परिवार्य समन्ततः

The rāṭha-s were enraged and shot many arrows. O great king! In every direction, they surrounded and slew the elephants.

रथ-राज क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने अनेक बाण चलाये। हे महान राजा! उन्होंने हर दिशा में हाथियों को घेर लिया और मार डाला।

नागो नागमभिद्रुत्य रथी च रथिनं रणे शक्तितोमरनाराचैर्निजघ्नुस्तत्र तत्र ह

In the battle, elephants attacked elephants and rāṭha-s attacked rāṭha-s. Using spears, javelins and iron arrows, they killed each other.

युद्ध में हाथियों ने हाथियों पर और रथियों ने रथों पर हमला किया। भालों, भालों और लोहे के तीरों का उपयोग करके उन्होंने एक दूसरे को मार डाला।

पादातानवमृद्नन्तो रथवारणवाजिनः रणमध्ये व्यदृश्यन्त कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम्

In the field of battle, foot soldiers, chariots, elephants and horses were seen to be driven away, creating a great tumult.

युद्ध क्षेत्र में पैदल सैनिकों, रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों को खदेड़ते हुए महान् कोलाहल मचाते देखा गया।

हयाश्च पर्यधावन्त चामरैरुपशोभिताः हंसा हिमवतः प्रस्थे पिबन्त इव मेदिनीम्

Horses adorned with whisks were routed and drank up the earth and were like swans on the slopes of the Himālaya-s.

मूंछों से सुशोभित घोड़े भटक रहे थे और पृथ्वी को पी रहे थे और हिमालय की ढलानों पर हंसों की तरह थे।

तेषां तु वाजिनां भूमिः खुरैश्चित्रा विशां पते अशोभत यथा नारी करजक्षतविक्षता

O lord of the earth! The earth was marked with the hooves of the horses and was as beautiful as a woman with the marks of nails on her body.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! पृथ्वी घोड़ों की टापों से अंकित थी तथा शरीर पर कीलों के चिन्हों से युक्त स्त्री के समान सुन्दर थी।

वाजिनां खुरशब्देन रथनेमिस्वनेन च पत्तीनां चापि शब्देन नागानां बृंहितेन च

There were sounds from the hooves of the horses and the wheels of chariots. There were the sounds of foot soldiers and the trumpeting of elephants.

घोड़ों की टापों और रथों के पहियों से आवाजें आ रही थीं। पैदल सैनिकों की आवाजें और हाथियों की चिंघाड़ की आवाजें आ रही थीं।

वादित्राणां च घोषेण शङ्खानां निस्वनेन च अभवन्नादिता भूमिर्निर्घातैरिव भारत

Musical instruments were sounded and conch shells blared. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The earth resounded, as if it had been struck by a storm.

संगीत वाद्ययंत्र बजाए गए और शंख बजाए गए। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! धरती गूँज उठी, मानों तूफान आ गया हो।

धनुषां कूजमानानां निस्त्रिंशानां च दीप्यताम् कवचानां प्रभाभिश्च न प्राज्ञायत किंचन

There was the twang of bows. Swords blazed and the armour was radiant. Nothing could be seen.

धनुषों की टंकार होने लगी। तलवारें चमक रही थीं और कवच चमक रहा था। कुछ भी नजर नहीं आ रहा था.

बहवो बाहवश्छिन्ना नागराजकरोपमाः उद्वेष्टन्ते विवेष्टन्ते वेगं कुर्वन्ति दारुणम्

Many arms were severed and were like the trunks of kings of elephants. They writhed fearfully with great force, or were immobile.

कई भुजाएँ कटी हुई थीं और हाथियों के राजा की सूंडों के समान थीं। वे बहुत ज़ोर से भयभीत होकर छटपटाते थे, या स्थिर रहते थे।

शिरसां च महाराज पततां वसुधातले च्युतानामिव तालेभ्यः फलानां श्रूयते स्वनः

O great king! Heads fell down on the surface of the earth and a sound was heard, like that when ripe palm fruit falls down.

हे महान राजा! सिर पृथ्वी की सतह पर गिरे और एक ध्वनि सुनाई दी, जैसे पके हुए ताड़ के फल नीचे गिरते हैं।

शिरोभिः पतितैर्भाति रुधिरार्द्रैर्वसुंधरा तपनीयनिभैः काले नलिनैरिव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Because of the heads that fell down, the earth was red with blood and looked beautiful, as if adorned with golden lotuses in the right season.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! गिरे हुए सिरों के कारण पृथ्वी रक्त से लाल हो गई और सुंदर दिखने लगी, मानो उचित ऋतु में सुनहरे कमलों से सजी हो।

उद्वृत्तनयनैस्तैस्तु गतसत्त्वैः सुविक्षतैः व्यभ्राजत महाराज पुण्डरीकैरिवावृता

O great king! With lives lost, the eyes were dilated. With all those wounds, it looked beautiful, as if covered with lotuses.

हे महान राजा! जान गंवाने के साथ, आंखें फैल गईं। उन सभी घावों के साथ, वह सुंदर लग रहा था, मानो कमल से ढका हुआ हो।

बाहुभिश्चन्दनादिग्धैः सकेयूरैर्महाधनैः पतितैर्भाति राजेन्द्र मही शक्रध्वजैरिव

O Indra among kings! Severed hands fell down on the ground, smeared with sandalwood paste and adorned with extremely expensive armlets. They were as dazzling as Śākra's standard.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! कटे हुए हाथ भूमि पर गिरे पड़े थे, चंदन से सने हुए थे और अत्यंत बहुमूल्य बाजूबंदों से सुशोभित थे। वे शक्र के मानक के समान चमकदार थे।

ऊरुभिश्च नरेन्द्राणां विनिकृत्तैर्महाहवे हस्तिहस्तोपमैरन्यैः संवृतं तद्रणाङ्गणम्

In the great battle, the thighs of the kings were severed. They adorned the field of battle, like the trunks of elephants.

इस महान युद्ध में राजाओं की जाँघें कट गईं। वे हाथियों की सूंडों के समान युद्धक्षेत्र को सुशोभित करते थे।

कबन्धशतसंकीर्णं छत्रचामरशोभितम् सेनावनं तच्छुशुभे वनं पुष्पाचितं यथा

Hundreds of headless torsos were strewn around, and umbrellas and fans. That forest of soldiers was as beautiful as a blooming forest.

चारों ओर सैकड़ों बिना सिर के धड़, छाते और पंखे बिखरे हुए थे। सैनिकों का वह वन एक खिले हुए वन के समान सुन्दर था।

तत्र योधा महाराज विचरन्तो ह्यभीतवत् दृश्यन्ते रुधिराक्ताङ्गाः पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः

O great king! The warriors roamed around fearlessly. With blood flowing from their limbs, they were seen to be like flowering kiṃśuka-s.

हे महान राजा! योद्धा निर्भय होकर विचरण करते थे। उनके अंगों से रक्त बहते हुए, वे खिले हुए किंशुक-स के समान दिखाई दे रहे थे।

मातङ्गाश्चाप्यदृश्यन्त शरतोमरपीडिताः पतन्तस्तत्र तत्रैव छिन्नाभ्रसदृशा रणे

Elephants were seen there, afflicted by arrows and spears. They fell down in the battle, like dispersed clouds.

वहाँ तीरों और भालों से पीड़ित हाथी दिखाई दिये। वे बिखरे हुए बादलों के समान युद्ध में गिर पड़े।

गजानीकं महाराज वध्यमानं महात्मभिः व्यदीर्यत दिशः सर्वा वातनुन्ना घना इव

O great king! The great-souled ones slaughtered divisions of elephants. They drove them away in all the directions, like clouds dispelled by the wind.

हे महान राजा! महात्माओं ने हाथियों के झुंड का वध कर दिया। उन्होंने उन्हें सब दिशाओं में ऐसे उड़ा दिया, जैसे हवा से बादल बिखर जाते हैं।

ते गजा घनसंकाशाः पेतुरुर्व्यां समन्ततः वज्ररुग्णा इव बभुः पर्वता युगसंक्षये

Those elephants were like clouds. In every direction, they shrieked and fell down. They were like mountains shattered by thunder, at the time of the destruction of a yuga.

वे हाथी बादलों के समान थे। वे हर दिशा में चिल्लाये और गिर पड़े। वे युग के विनाश के समय वज्र से टूटे हुए पर्वतों के समान थे।

हयानां सादिभिः सार्धं पतितानां महीतले राशयः संप्रदृश्यन्ते गिरिमात्रास्ततस्ततः

Horses fell down on the ground, together with their riders. With their harnesses, those heaps were seen to be like mountains.

घोड़े अपने सवारों समेत भूमि पर गिर पड़े। उनकी पट्टियों से वे ढेर पर्वत के समान जान पड़ते थे।

संजज्ञे रणभूमौ तु परलोकवहा नदी शोणितोदा रथावर्ता ध्वजवृक्षास्थिशर्करा

A river was created on the field of battle and it flowed towards the world hereafter. The water was made out of blood and the chariots were the eddies. The standards were like trees and the bones were the rocks.

युद्ध के मैदान में एक नदी का निर्माण हुआ और वह परलोक की ओर प्रवाहित हुई। जल रक्त से बना था और रथ भंवर थे। मानदण्ड वृक्षों के समान थे और हड्डियाँ चट्टानों के समान थीं।

भुजनक्रा धनुःस्रोता हस्तिशैला हयोपला मेदोमज्जाकर्दमिनी छत्रहंसा गदोडुपा

The arms were the crocodiles. The bows were the current. The elephants were the boulders. The horses were the stones. Fat and marrow constituted the mire. The umbrellas were the swans. The clubs were rafts.

भुजाएँ मगरमच्छ थीं। धनुष धारा थे। हाथी शिलाखंड थे। घोड़े पत्थर थे. चर्बी और मज्जा से कीचड़ बना। छत्र हंस थे। क्लब बेड़ा थे.

कवचोष्णीषसंछन्ना पताकारुचिरद्रुमा चक्रचक्रावलीजुष्टा त्रिवेणूदण्डकावृता

Armour and headdresses were scattered around. The flags were like beautiful trees. There were a large number of wheels, triveṇu-s and poles.

कवच और टोपी चारों ओर बिखरे हुए थे। झण्डे सुन्दर वृक्षों के समान थे। वहाँ बड़ी संख्या में पहिए, त्रिवेणु और डंडे थे।

शूराणां हर्षजननी भीरूणां भयवर्धिनी प्रावर्तत नदी रौद्रा कुरुसृञ्जयसंकुला

This delighted brave ones and generated terror among cowards. That terrible river, full of Kuru-s and Sṛñjaya-s, flowed along.

इससे शूरवीर प्रसन्न हुए और कायरों में भय उत्पन्न हो गया। कुरु-सृंजय-से भरी वह भयानक नदी साथ-साथ बहती थी।

तां नदीं पितृलोकाय वहन्तीमतिभैरवाम् तेरुर्वाहननौभिस्ते शूराः परिघबाहवः

That extremely horrible river flowed along to the world of the ancestors. Those brave ones possessed arms like clubs and used their mounts as boats to cross it.

वह अत्यंत भयानक नदी पितरों के लोक की ओर बहती थी। उन बहादुरों के पास गदा जैसे हथियार थे और वे इसे पार करने के लिए अपनी नावों का उपयोग नावों के रूप में करते थे।

वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे निर्मर्यादे विशां पते चतुरङ्गक्षये घोरे पूर्वं देवासुरोपमे

O lord of the earth! That cruel battle raged on. It was fierce and led to the destruction of the four kinds of forces, like that in earlier times between the gods and the āsura-s.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वह क्रूर युद्ध चलता रहा। यह भयंकर था और इससे चार प्रकार की शक्तियों का विनाश हुआ, जैसा कि पहले के समय में देवताओं और असुरों के बीच हुआ था।

अक्रोशन्बान्धवानन्ये तत्र तत्र परंतप क्रोशद्भिर्बान्धवैश्चान्ये भयार्ता न निवर्तिरे

O scorcher of enemies! Relatives called out to each other. Other terrified ones returned, after being summoned by their relatives.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! रिश्तेदारों ने एक-दूसरे को आवाज लगाई। अन्य भयभीत लोग अपने रिश्तेदारों द्वारा बुलाए जाने के बाद वापस लौट आए।

निर्मर्यादे तथा युद्धे वर्तमाने भयानके अर्जुनो भीमसेनश्च मोहयां चक्रतुः परान्

That battle was cruel and fierce. Arjuna and Bhīmasena confounded the enemy.

वह युद्ध क्रूर एवं भयंकर था। अर्जुन और भीमसेन ने शत्रु को भ्रमित कर दिया।

सा वध्यमाना महती सेना तव जनाधिप अमुह्यत्तत्र तत्रैव योषिन्मदवशादिव

O lord of men! They slaughtered your large army. They lost their senses, like a woman under the influence of alcohol.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! उन्होंने तुम्हारी विशाल सेना का वध कर दिया। वे शराब के नशे में किसी स्त्री की भाँति अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे।

मोहयित्वा च तां सेनां भीमसेनधनंजयौ दध्मतुर्वारिजौ तत्र सिंहनादं च नेदतुः

Your soldiers were confounded by Bhīmasena and Dhanañjayā. They blew on their conch shells and roared like lions.

भीमसेन और धनंजय ने आपके सैनिकों को भ्रमित कर दिया था। उन्होंने शंख बजाये और सिंहों की भाँति गर्जना की।

श्रुत्वैव तु महाशब्दं धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनौ धर्मराजं पुरस्कृत्य मद्रराजमभिद्रुतौ

On hearing that loud noise, with Dharmarāja at the forefront, Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī attacked the king of Madra.

उस तीव्र ध्वनि को सुनकर धर्मराज को सबसे आगे रखकर धृष्टद्युम्न और शिखंडी ने मद्रराज पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

तत्राश्चर्यमपश्याम घोररूपं विशां पते शल्येन संगताः शूरा यदयुध्यन्त भागशः

O lord of the earth! It was terrible in form and we witnessed something that was extraordinary. Those brave ones, who were fighting in different segments, united and attacked Śalya.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! इसका रूप भयानक था और हमने कुछ ऐसा देखा जो असाधारण था। वे वीर, जो अलग-अलग खंडों में लड़ रहे थे, एकजुट हो गये और शल्य पर हमला कर दिया।

माद्रीपुत्रौ सरभसौ कृतास्त्रौ युद्धदुर्मदौ अभ्ययातां त्वरायुक्तौ जिगीषन्तौ बलं तव

Mādrī's sons were proud, skilled in the use of weapons and invincible in battle. Wishing to slay your soldiers, they attacked spiritedly.

माद्री के पुत्र गौरवशाली, शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल और युद्ध में अजेय थे। आपके सैनिकों को मार डालने की इच्छा से उन्होंने उत्साहपूर्वक आक्रमण किया।

ततो न्यवर्तत बलं तावकं भरतर्षभ शरैः प्रणुन्नं बहुधा पाण्डवैर्जितकाशिभिः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! At this, your forces retreated. The Pāṇḍava-s, desiring victory, used arrows to mangle them in many ways.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! इस पर आपकी सेना पीछे हट गयी। विजय की इच्छा से पांडवों ने उन्हें अनेक प्रकार से कुचलने के लिए बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

वध्यमाना चमूः सा तु पुत्राणां प्रेक्षतां तव भेजे दिशो महाराज प्रणुन्ना दृढधन्विभिः हाहाकारो महाञ्जज्ञे योधानां तव भारत

While your sons looked on, the army was slaughtered. O great king! Afflicted by the ones who wielded firm bows, they were routed in different directions. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! A great sound of lamentation arose among your warriors.

जब तक आपके पुत्र देखते रहे, सेना का संहार हो गया। हे महान राजा! दृढ़ धनुष धारण करने वालों से पीड़ित होकर वे भिन्न-भिन्न दिशाओं में मारे गये। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके योद्धाओं में बड़े बड़े विलाप की ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई।

तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति वागासीद्द्रावितानां महात्मनाम् क्षत्रियाणां तदान्योन्यं संयुगे जयमिच्छताम् आद्रवन्नेव भग्नास्ते पाण्डवैस्तव सैनिकाः

There were some other great-souled kṣatriya-s who still desired victory in the battle, and they asked them to wait. However, your soldiers were shattered and routed by the Pāṇḍava-s.

कुछ अन्य महान आत्मा वाले क्षत्रिय भी थे जो अभी भी युद्ध में विजय चाहते थे, और उन्होंने उनसे प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए कहा। हालाँकि, आपके सैनिक पांडवों द्वारा चूर-चूर हो गये थे।

त्यक्त्वा युद्धे प्रियान्पुत्रान्भ्रातॄनथ पितामहान् मातुलान्भागिनेयांश्च तथा संबन्धिबान्धवान्

In the battle, they abandoned their beloved sons, brothers, grandfathers, maternal uncles, sisters' sons, kin and relatives.

युद्ध में उन्होंने अपने प्रिय पुत्रों, भाइयों, दादाओं, मामाओं, बहनों के पुत्रों, संबंधियों और संबंधियों को त्याग दिया।

हयान्द्विपांस्त्वरयन्तो योधा जग्मुः समन्ततः आत्मत्राणकृतोत्साहास्तावका भरतर्षभ

Urging the horses and elephants to speed up, the warriors fled in different directions. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Those on your side were only interested in saving themselves.

घोड़ों और हाथियों को गति बढ़ाने का आग्रह करते हुए, योद्धा अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गए। हे भरत वंश में बैल! आपके पक्ष के लोग केवल खुद को बचाने में रुचि रखते थे।
