Sañjaya said: The one with the supreme ape on his standard advanced at great speed. Ninety brave Kuru rāṭha-s wished to fight with him and attacked him. In the battle, those tigers among men surrounded Arjuna, tiger among men.
संजय ने कहा: अपने मानक पर सर्वोच्च वानर वाला व्यक्ति बड़ी तेजी से आगे बढ़ा। नब्बे वीर कुरु रथों ने उससे युद्ध करना चाहा और उस पर हमला कर दिया। युद्ध में उन नरव्याघ्रों ने नरव्याघ्र अर्जुन को घेर लिया।

Having been struck by the shower of weapons released by the yāvana-s on elephants, Phālguna smiled and severed those with his sharp broad-headed arrows and arrows in the form of a half-moon.

Those gold-tufted arrows afflicted and killed the giant elephants that had golden harnesses. They fell down, like mountains that were on fire.
उन स्वर्ण-जटित बाणों ने स्वर्ण हारधारी विशाल हाथियों को पीड़ित करके उनका वध कर दिया। वे जलते हुए पर्वतों के समान नीचे गिर पड़े।
It was as fierce as the night of destruction and fed on men, elephants and horses. It was extremely terrible and could shatter walls, mansions and the gates of cities.
वह विनाश की रात के समान भयंकर थी और मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों पर आश्रित थी। यह अत्यंत भयानक था और दीवारों, मकानों तथा नगरों के द्वारों को चकनाचूर कर सकता था।
Pāṇḍava crushed men and horses plated in bronze armour and terrified them. He uprooted them with the club. Slain, they fell down with a great noise.

Then, in the great battle, there arose a cry of distress from the Kuru-s, as chariots, horses, elephants, and the breath of life were slain by Arjuna's arrows.

हे महान राजा! आपके पुत्र कर्ण के रथ की ओर बढ़े। वे अथाह जल में डूबे हुए थे और कर्ण उनके लिए एक द्वीप के समान था।

O great king! The Kuru-s were like defanged serpents. Because of their fear of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva, they sought shelter with Karṇa.
हे महान राजा! कुरु विक्षिप्त साँपों की तरह थे। गाण्डीवधारी के डर के कारण, उन्होंने कर्ण की शरण ली।

धर्ममेवोपलीयन्ते कर्मवन्ति हि यानि च
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! It was just as all beings, fearing death and because of their deeds, seek shelter with dharma.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह वैसा ही था जैसे सभी प्राणी, मृत्यु से डरते हुए और अपने कर्मों के कारण, धर्म की शरण लेते हैं।

He saw that your army had been destroyed because of Pārtha's strength. Wishing to kill the enemy, Karṇa stretched his bow and while Savyasachi looked on, attacked the Pāñcāla-s again.
उन्होंने देखा कि पार्थ के पराक्रम से आपकी सेना नष्ट हो गयी है। शत्रु को मारने की इच्छा से, कर्ण ने अपना धनुष बढ़ाया और जब सव्यसाची देखते रहे, तो उन्होंने पंचालों पर फिर से हमला किया।
The lords of the earth possessed eyes that were as red as wounds. In a short while, Karṇa showered down torrents of arrows on them, like clouds pouring down on a large mountain.
पृथ्वी के स्वामियों के पास ऐसी आँखें थीं जो घावों के समान लाल थीं। थोड़ी ही देर में कर्ण ने उन पर बाणों की मूसलाधार वर्षा की, जैसे बड़े पर्वत पर बादल बरस रहे हों।

व्ययोजयन्त पाञ्चालान्प्राणैः प्राणभृतां वर
O venerable one! Thousands of arrows were shot by Karṇa. The supreme among all living beings robbed many Pāñcāla-s of their lives.
हे आदरणीय! कर्ण ने हजारों बाण छोड़े। सभी जीवित प्राणियों में सर्वोच्च ने कई पंचालों का जीवन छीन लिया।
O lord of the earth! In that battle, great sounds of lamentation arose among the Pāñcāla-s. To ensure the welfare of his friend, the son of a sūta, the slayer of enemies, slaughtered them.
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उस युद्ध में पंचालों में विलाप की महान ध्वनियाँ उठीं। अपने मित्र का कल्याण सुनिश्चित करने के लिए शत्रुओं के हत्यारे सूतपुत्र ने उनका वध कर दिया।
