संजय उवाच क्षत्रियास्ते महाराज परस्परवधैषिणः अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुः कृतवैराः परस्परम्

Sañjaya said: O great king! The kṣatriya-s wished to kill each other. They bore feelings of enmity towards each other and slew each other in the battle.

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! क्षत्रिय एक-दूसरे को मारना चाहते थे। वे एक-दूसरे के प्रति शत्रुता की भावना रखते थे और युद्ध में एक-दूसरे को मार डालते थे।

रथौघाश्च हयौघाश्च नरौघाश्च समन्ततः गजौघाश्च महाराज संसक्ताः स्म परस्परम्

O great king! Large numbers of chariots, throngs of horses, masses of men and numerous elephants clashed against each other in every direction.

हे महान राजा! बड़ी संख्या में रथ, घोड़ों की भीड़, मनुष्यों की भीड़ और असंख्य हाथी हर दिशा में एक-दूसरे से टकरा रहे थे।

गदानां परिघाणां च कणपानां च सर्पताम् प्रासानां भिण्डिपालानां भुशुण्डीनां च सर्वशः

There were clubs, maces, kanapa-s, lances, catapults; and bhuśuṇḍī-s were seen to move everywhere.

वहाँ गदाएँ, गदाएँ, कनापा-एस, भाले, गुलेल थे; और भुशुण्डियों को हर जगह घूमते देखा गया।

संपातं चान्वपश्याम संग्रामे भृशदारुणे शलभा इव संपेतुः समन्ताच्छरवृष्टयः

They descended in that extremely fierce battle. In every direction, showers of arrows descended like locusts.

वे उस अत्यंत भीषण युद्ध में उतर आये। सब दिशाओं में टिड्डियों के समान बाणों की वर्षा होने लगी।

नागा नागान्समासाद्य व्यधमन्त परस्परम् हया हयांश्च समरे रथिनो रथिनस्तथा पत्तयः पत्तिसंघैश्च हयसंघैर्हयास्तथा

In the encounter, elephants clashed against elephants and killed each other. Horses clashed against horses, chariots against chariots, infantry against large numbers of infantry and large numbers of horses against horses.

मुठभेड़ में हाथी, हाथियों से भिड़ गए और एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। घोड़े घोड़ों से, रथ रथों से, पैदल सेना बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सेना से और बड़ी संख्या में घोड़े घोड़ों से भिड़ गये।

पत्तयो रथमातङ्गान्रथा हस्त्यश्वमेव च नागाश्च समरे त्र्यङ्गं ममृदुः शीघ्रगा नृप

O king! In that encounter, foot soldiers, chariots, elephants, rāṭha-s, elephants, horses and elephants were seen to swiftly crush the other three kinds of forces.

हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में पैदल सैनिक, रथ, हाथी, रथ, हाथी, घोड़े और हाथी अन्य तीन प्रकार की सेनाओं को तेजी से कुचलते देखे गए।

पततां तत्र शूराणां क्रोशतां च परस्परम् घोरमायोधनं जज्ञे पशूनां वैशसं यथा

The brave foot soldiers roared at each other. That terrible encounter was like a sacrificial spot for animals.

वीर पैदल सैनिक एक-दूसरे पर दहाड़ने लगे। वह भयानक मुठभेड़ जानवरों के लिए एक बलिदान स्थल की तरह थी।

रुधिरेण समास्तीर्णा भाति भारत मेदिनी शक्रगोपगणाकीर्णा प्रावृषीव यथा धरा

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Covered in blood, the earth was beautiful. It was as if the earth was covered by large numbers of śakragopa insects during the monsoon.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! रक्त से लथपथ, पृथ्वी सुंदर थी। ऐसा लगता था मानों मानसून के दौरान धरती बड़ी संख्या में शकरागोप कीटों से ढक गई हो।

यथा वा वाससी शुक्ले महारजनरञ्जिते बिभृयाद्युवतिः श्यामा तद्वदासीद्वसुंधरा मांसशोणितचित्रेव शातकौम्भमयीव च

The earth was as beautiful as a young lady dressed in a white garment that had been dyed with saffron. With the colourful flesh and blood, it seemed to be decorated in gold.

पृथ्वी केसर से रंगे सफेद वस्त्र पहने एक युवा महिला की तरह सुंदर थी। रंग-बिरंगे मांस और रक्त से वह सोने से सजा हुआ प्रतीत होता था।

छिन्नानां चोत्तमाङ्गानां बाहूनां चोरुभिः सह कुण्डलानां प्रविद्धानां भूषणानां च भारत

Heads, arms and thighs were severed. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Earrings and ornaments were dislodged.

सिर, हाथ और जांघें अलग कर दी गईं। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कान की बालियां और आभूषण उखड़ गए।

निष्काणामधिसूत्राणां शरीराणां च धन्विनाम् वर्मणां सपताकानां संघास्तत्रापतन्भुवि

Golden necklaces and armour were dislodged from the bodies of the archers. With large numbers of flags, they fell down on the ground.

धनुर्धारियों के शरीर से सोने के हार और कवच उतार दिये गये। बड़ी संख्या में झंडे लेकर जमीन पर गिर पड़े.

गजान्गजाः समासाद्य विषाणाग्रैरदारयन् विषाणाभिहतास्ते च भ्राजन्ते द्विरदा यथा

Elephants engaged with elephants and gored each other with the tips of their tusk. Wounded by the tusks, the elephants looked beautiful.

हाथियों ने हाथियों से युद्ध किया और अपने दाँतों की नोकों से एक-दूसरे को घायल कर दिया। दाँतों से घायल हाथी सुन्दर लग रहे थे।

रुधिरेणावसिक्ताङ्गा गैरिकप्रस्रवा इव यथा भ्राजन्ति स्यन्दन्तः पर्वता धातुमण्डिताः

Their limbs were covered with blood and they looked like mobile mountains full of minerals, with red chalk flowing down their sides.

उनके अंग खून से लथपथ थे और वे खनिजों से भरे मोबाइल पहाड़ों की तरह लग रहे थे, जिनके किनारों पर लाल चाक बह रहा था।

तोमरान्गजिभिर्मुक्तान्प्रतीपानास्थितान्बहून् हस्तैर्विचेरुस्ते नागा बभञ्जुश्चापरे तथा

The elephants destroyed many lances hurled by their opponents, including those that were still held horizontally in the hands.

हाथियों ने अपने विरोधियों द्वारा फेंके गए कई भालों को नष्ट कर दिया, जिनमें वे भी शामिल थे जो अभी भी हाथों में क्षैतिज रूप से पकड़े हुए थे।

नाराचैश्छिन्नवर्माणो भ्राजन्ते स्म गजोत्तमाः हिमागमे महाराज व्यभ्रा इव महीधराः

With their armour destroyed by iron arrows, those supreme elephants looked dazzling. O great king! They were like mountains deprived of clouds at the onset of winter.

लोहे के बाणों से उनके कवच नष्ट हो जाने के कारण वे श्रेष्ठ हाथी तेजस्वी लग रहे थे। हे महान राजा! वे सर्दियों की शुरुआत में बादलों से वंचित पहाड़ों की तरह थे।

शरैः कनकपुङ्खैस्तु चिता रेजुर्गजोत्तमाः उल्काभिः संप्रदीप्ताग्राः पर्वता इव मारिष

The best of elephants were pierced with gold-tufted arrows. O venerable one! They looked like beautiful mountain tops, lit with torches.

श्रेष्ठ हाथियों को स्वर्णजटित बाणों से बींध दिया गया। हे आदरणीय! वे मशालों से जगमगाती खूबसूरत पर्वत चोटियों की तरह लग रहे थे।

केचिदभ्याहता नागा नागैर्नगनिभा भुवि निपेतुः समरे तस्मिन्पक्षवन्त इवाद्रयः

Some elephants, as large as mountains, were struck by other elephants and fell down on the ground. They fell down in that battle, like mountains with wings.

कुछ हाथी, पर्वत जितने बड़े, अन्य हाथियों से टकराकर जमीन पर गिर गये। वे उस युद्ध में पंखवाले पर्वतों के समान गिर पड़े।

अपरे प्राद्रवन्नागाः शल्यार्ता व्रणपीडिताः प्रतिमानैश्च कुम्भैश्च पेतुरुर्व्यां महाहवे

Other elephants were struck by arrows and oppressed by their wounds. These fled. With their temples and frontal globes shattered, they shrieked and fell down in that great battle.

अन्य हाथी तीरों से घायल हो गये और उनके घावों से पीड़ित हो गये। ये भाग गये. उनकी कनपटी और ललाट के टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो जाने से वे चीखते हुए उस महान युद्ध में गिर पड़े।

निषेदुः सिंहवच्चान्ये नदन्तो भैरवान्रवान् मम्लुश्च बहवो राजंश्चुकूजुश्चापरे तथा

There were others that emitted terrible roars like lions. O king! There were others that shrieked and ran hither and thither.

कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो सिंहों के समान भयानक दहाड़ते थे। हे राजा! कुछ और लोग भी थे जो चीखते हुए इधर-उधर भागे।

हयाश्च निहता बाणैः स्वर्णभाण्डपरिच्छदाः निषेदुश्चैव मम्लुश्च बभ्रमुश्च दिशो दश

Horses with golden harnesses and trappings were killed by the arrows and weakened. They screamed and ran in the ten directions.

सुनहरे हार और जाल वाले घोड़े तीरों से मारे गए और कमजोर हो गए। वे चीखते हुए दसों दिशाओं में भागे।

अपरे कृष्यमाणाश्च विवेष्टन्तो महीतले भावान्बहुविधांश्चक्रुस्ताडिताः शरतोमरैः

Others that were afflicted and rendered unconscious, fell down on the ground. Oppressed by the arrows and javelins, they screamed in many different kinds of ways.

अन्य लोग पीड़ित होकर बेहोश होकर जमीन पर गिर पड़े। तीरों और भालों से पीड़ित होकर वे अनेक प्रकार से चिल्लाने लगे।

नरास्तु निहता भूमौ कूजन्तस्तत्र मारिष दृष्ट्वा च बान्धवानन्ये पितॄनन्ये पितामहान्

O venerable one! Men were slain there. They screamed and fell down on the ground. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Others saw their relatives, fathers, grandfathers and others running away from the enemy.

हे आदरणीय! वहाँ आदमी मारे गये। वे चिल्लाये और जमीन पर गिर पड़े। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! दूसरों ने अपने रिश्तेदारों, पिता, दादा और अन्य लोगों को दुश्मन से भागते देखा।

धावमानान्परांश्चैव दृष्ट्वान्ये तत्र भारत गोत्रनामानि ख्यातानि शशंसुरितरेतरम्

On seeing this, they called out the names of their lineages and their own names and summoned each other.

यह देखकर उन्होंने अपने-अपने वंश के नाम और अपना-अपना नाम पुकारा और एक-दूसरे को बुलाया।

तेषां छिन्ना महाराज भुजाः कनकभूषणाः उद्वेष्टन्ते विवेष्टन्ते पतन्ते चोत्पतन्ति च

O great king! Bedecked with golden ornaments, their arms were severed and having fallen, or while falling down, were immobile or writhed.

हे महान राजा! स्वर्ण आभूषणों से सुसज्जित, उनकी भुजाएँ कटी हुई थीं और गिरते समय, या गिरते समय, स्थिर या छटपटा रही थीं।

निपतन्ति तथा भूमौ स्फुरन्ति च सहस्रशः वेगांश्चान्ये रणे चक्रुः स्फुरन्त इव पन्नगाः

Thousands of these fell down on the ground and quivered. In that battle, they quivered powerfully, like serpents.

इनमें से हजारों लोग भूमि पर गिरकर काँपने लगे। उस युद्ध में, वे साँपों की तरह शक्तिशाली ढंग से फड़फड़ाने लगे।

ते भुजा भोगिभोगाभाश्चन्दनाक्ता विशां पते लोहितार्द्रा भृशं रेजुस्तपनीयध्वजा इव

O lord of the earth! Those arms were like the bodies of serpents, smeared with sandalwood. Drenched with blood, they were as beautiful as golden standards.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वे भुजाएँ चन्दन से पुती हुई साँपों के शरीर के समान थीं। रक्त से भीगे हुए वे स्वर्णिम मानकों के समान सुन्दर थे।

वर्तमाने तथा घोरे संकुले सर्वतोदिशम् अविज्ञाताः स्म युध्यन्ते विनिघ्नन्तः परस्परम्

A fierce encounter ensued in every direction. Without recognizing, they fought and killed each other. Because of that descent of weapons, the earth was covered with dust.

हर दिशा में भीषण मुठभेड़ शुरू हो गई। बिना पहचाने वे आपस में लड़े और एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। अस्त्र-शस्त्रों के उस अवतरण के कारण पृथ्वी धूल से ढक गयी।

भौमेन रजसा कीर्णे शस्त्रसंपातसंकुले नैव स्वे न परे राजन्व्यज्ञायन्त तमोवृते

O king! Since everything was covered in darkness, one could not differentiate those on one's own side from that of the enemy.

हे राजा! चूँकि सब कुछ अँधेरे में ढका हुआ था, कोई भी अपनी तरफ के लोगों को दुश्मन से अलग नहीं कर सकता था।

तथा तदभवद्युद्धं घोररूपं भयानकम् शोणितोदा महानद्यः प्रसस्रुस्तत्र चासकृत्

A terrible and large river with currents of blood, fierce in form, was created there and began to flow.

वहां रक्त की धाराओं वाली भयंकर रूप वाली एक भयानक और बड़ी नदी उत्पन्न हो गई और बहने लगी।

शीर्षपाषाणसंछन्नाः केशशैवलशाद्वलाः अस्थिसंघातसंकीर्णा धनुःशरवरोत्तमाः

The severed heads were like rocks. The hair constituted weeds and moss. It was full of the best of bows and arrows and large numbers of bones.

कटे हुए सिर चट्टान के समान थे। बाल घास-फूस और काई से बने थे। वह सर्वोत्तम धनुष-बाणों तथा बड़ी संख्या में हड्डियों से भरा हुआ था।

मांसकर्दमपङ्काश्च शोणितौघाः सुदारुणाः नदीः प्रवर्तयामासुर्यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनीः

Flesh constituted the mud and mire. There were extremely terrible currents of blood. The river that was created there extended Yāma's kingdom.

मांस से मिट्टी और कीचड़ बना। रक्त की अत्यंत भयानक धाराएँ बह रही थीं। वहां जो नदी बनी उसने यम के राज्य का विस्तार किया।

ता नद्यो घोररूपाश्च नयन्त्यो यमसादनम् अवगाढा मज्जयन्त्यः क्षत्रस्याजनयन्भयम्

That river was fearsome in form and conveyed them to Yāma's abode. It generated fear in the minds of the kṣatriya-s who submerged and immersed themselves in it.

वह नदी भयानक रूप में थी और उन्हें यम के निवास तक पहुंचाती थी। इससे क्षत्रियों के मन में डर पैदा हो गया और उन्होंने खुद को इसमें डुबा लिया।

क्रव्यादानां नरव्याघ्र नर्दतां तत्र तत्र ह घोरमायोधनं जज्ञे प्रेतराजपुरोपमम्

O tiger among men! Carnivorous beasts roared in various places there. That horrible field of battle looked like the city of the lord of the dead.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! वहाँ स्थान-स्थान पर मांसाहारी पशु गरजते थे। युद्ध का वह भयानक क्षेत्र मृतकों के स्वामी के नगर जैसा लग रहा था।

उत्थितान्यगणेयानि कबन्धानि समन्ततः नृत्यन्ति वै भूतगणाः संतृप्ता मांसशोणितैः

In every direction, large numbers of headless torsos were seen to rise up. Satisified with the flesh and the blood, large numbers of demons danced around.

हर दिशा में बड़ी संख्या में बिना सिर के धड़ ऊपर की ओर उठते दिखे। मांस और रक्त से संतुष्ट होकर, बड़ी संख्या में राक्षस चारों ओर नृत्य करने लगे।

पीत्वा च शोणितं तत्र वसां पीत्वा च भारत मेदोमज्जावसातृप्तास्तृप्ता मांसस्य चैव हि धावमानाश्च दृश्यन्ते काकगृध्रबलास्तथा

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They drank the blood there. They drank the marrow. Satiated with the fat and the marrow, crows, vultures and smaller crows were seen to run around.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने वहां खून पिया. उन्होंने मज्जा पी लिया। चर्बी और मज्जा से तृप्त होकर कौवे, गिद्ध और छोटे कौवे इधर-उधर भागते देखे गये।

शूरास्तु समरे राजन्भयं त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजम् योधव्रतसमाख्याताश्चक्रुः कर्माण्यभीतवत्

O king! In that battle, the brave ones cast aside all fear, though it is difficult to give that up. They resorted to the vow of warriors and performed their tasks without any fear.

हे राजा! उस युद्ध में, बहादुरों ने सभी भय को दूर कर दिया, हालाँकि इसे छोड़ना कठिन है। उन्होंने योद्धाओं की प्रतिज्ञा का सहारा लिया और बिना किसी डर के अपना कार्य किया।

शरशक्तिसमाकीर्णे क्रव्यादगणसंकुले व्यचरन्त गणैः शूराः ख्यापयन्तः स्वपौरुषम्

There were large numbers of arrows and lances on the field of battle and it was infested with innumerable predatory beasts. The brave ones roamed around there, displaying their manliness.

युद्ध के मैदान में बड़ी संख्या में तीर और भाले थे और यह असंख्य हिंसक जानवरों से भरा हुआ था। वीर वहाँ अपना पौरुष प्रदर्शित करते फिरते थे।

अन्योन्यं श्रावयन्ति स्म नामगोत्राणि भारत पितृनामानि च रणे गोत्रनामानि चाभितः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They made each other listen to their names and lineages. In the encounter, they recounted the names of their fathers and their families.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने एक दूसरे को अपना नाम और वंशावली सुनायीं। मुठभेड़ में, उन्होंने अपने पिता और अपने परिवारों के नाम बताए।

श्रावयन्तो हि बहवस्तत्र योधा विशां पते अन्योन्यमवमृद्नन्तः शक्तितोमरपट्टिशैः

O lord of the earth! In diverse ways there, the warriors made others listen to these. They attacked each other, with spears, javelins and battleaxes.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वहाँ विविध प्रकार से योद्धाओं ने दूसरों को ये बातें सुनायीं। उन्होंने भालों, भालों और फरसों से एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया।

वर्तमाने तदा युद्धे घोररूपे सुदारुणे व्यषीदत्कौरवी सेना भिन्ना नौरिव सागरे

An extremely terrible battle commenced, fearsome in form. The Kaurava army was weakened, like a shattered boat on the ocean.

एक अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध प्रारम्भ हुआ, जिसका रूप भयानक था। कौरव सेना समुद्र में टूटी हुई नाव की तरह कमजोर हो गई थी।
