संजय उवाच मारिषाधिरथेः श्रुत्वा वचो युद्धाभिनन्दिनः शल्योऽब्रवीत्पुनः कर्णं निदर्शनमुदाहरन्

Sañjaya said: O venerable one! On hearing the words of Adhiratha's son, who delighted himself in battle, Śalya again spoke to Karṇa, citing an example.

संजय ने कहा: हे पूजनीय! अधिरथ के पुत्र, जो युद्ध में प्रसन्न था, के वचन सुनकर शल्य ने फिर एक उदाहरण देते हुए कर्ण से बात की।

यथैव मत्तो मद्येन त्वं तथा न च वा तथा तथाहं त्वां प्रमाद्यन्तं चिकित्सामि सुहृत्तया

"You seem to be like one who is intoxicated with liquor. But whether you are like that or not, and irrespective of your intoxication, as a well-wisher, I will try to cure you.

"ऐसा लगता है कि तुम शराब के नशे में धुत्त हो। लेकिन चाहे तुम ऐसे हो या नहीं, और चाहे तुम्हारा नशा कितना भी हो, एक शुभचिंतक के रूप में, मैं तुम्हें ठीक करने का प्रयास करूंगा।"

इमां काकोपमां कर्ण प्रोच्यमानां निबोध मे श्रुत्वा यथेष्टं कुर्यास्त्वं विहीन कुलपांसन

O Karṇa! I will tell you about the story of the crow. Listen to me. O wicked one! O worst of the lineage! On hearing this, do what you wish.

हे कर्ण! मैं आपको कौए की कहानी के बारे में बताऊंगा. मेरी बात सुनो। हे दुष्ट! हे वंश के सबसे बुरे! यह सुनकर जो चाहो वही करो।

नाहमात्मनि किंचिद्वै किल्बिषं कर्ण संस्मरे येन त्वं मां महाबाहो हन्तुमिच्छस्यनागसम्

O Karṇa! O mighty-armed one! I do not recollect a single taint in me, as a result of which you wish to kill an unblemished one like me.

हे कर्ण! हे महाबाहु! मुझमें एक भी ऐसा दाग याद नहीं आता, जिसके कारण आप मुझ जैसे निष्कलंक को मारना चाहते हों।

अवश्यं तु मया वाच्यं बुध्यतां यदि ते हितम् विशेषतो रथस्थेन राज्ञश्चैव हितैषिणा

Had you known what was good for you, you would certainly have listened to my words, especially because I am your charioteer and the king's well-wisher.

यदि तुम्हें पता होता कि तुम्हारे लिए क्या अच्छा है, तो तुम अवश्य मेरी बातें सुनते, खासकर इसलिए क्योंकि मैं तुम्हारा सारथी और राजा का शुभचिंतक हूं।

समं च विषमं चैव रथिनश्च बलाबलम् श्रमः खेदश्च सततं हयानां रथिना सह

The even and uneven terrain, the strengths and weaknesses of the chariot, the fatigue and perspiration of the horses and the charioteer,

समतल और असमान भूभाग, रथ की ताकत और कमजोरियाँ, घोड़ों और सारथी की थकान और पसीना,

आयुधस्य परिज्ञानं रुतं च मृगपक्षिणाम् भारश्चाप्यतिभारश्च शल्यानां च प्रतिक्रिया

the knowledge of the weapons, the cries of animals and birds, what is burdensome and what is extremely burdensome, antidotes to wounds from weapons,

अस्त्र-शस्त्रों का ज्ञान, पशु-पक्षियों की चीत्कार, क्या बोझ है और क्या अत्यंत भारी है, शस्त्रों के घाव की औषधि,

अस्त्रयोगश्च युद्धं च निमित्तानि तथैव च सर्वमेतन्मया ज्ञेयं रथस्यास्य कुटुम्बिना अतस्त्वां कथये कर्ण निदर्शनमिदं पुनः

the use of different weapons in battle and knowledge of portents—all of these are known to me. And I am familiar with this chariot. O Karṇa! Therefore, let me recount the example to you once more.

युद्ध में विभिन्न हथियारों का उपयोग और घटनाओं का ज्ञान - ये सभी मुझे ज्ञात हैं। और मैं इस रथ से परिचित हूं. हे कर्ण! इसलिए, मैं आपको एक बार फिर से उदाहरण सुनाता हूँ।

वैश्यः किल समुद्रान्ते प्रभूतधनधान्यवान् यज्वा दानपतिः क्षान्तः स्वकर्मस्थोऽभवच्छुचिः

On the other side of the ocean, there lived a vaiśya and he possessed a lot of riches and foodgrains. He performed sacrifices, was generous and quiet and established in the deeds he ought to perform. He was pure.

समुद्र के दूसरी ओर एक वैश्य रहता था और उसके पास बहुत सारा धन और खाद्यान्न था। वह यज्ञ करता था, उदार और शांत था और जो कर्म उसे करने चाहिए उनमें दृढ़ था। वह शुद्ध था.

बहुपुत्रः प्रियापत्यः सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः राज्ञो धर्मप्रधानस्य राष्ट्रे वसति निर्भयः

He had many sons whom he loved and he was compassionate towards all beings. Without any fear, he dwelt in the kingdom of a king who observed dharma.

उसके कई बेटे थे जिनसे वह प्यार करता था और वह सभी प्राणियों के प्रति दयालु था। वह बिना किसी भय के धर्म का पालन करने वाले एक राजा के राज्य में रहने लगा।

पुत्राणां तस्य बालानां कुमाराणां यशस्विनाम् काको बहूनामभवदुच्छिष्टकृतभोजनः

His illustrious sons were young. There was a crow that lived there and it subsisted on many kinds of leftover food.

उनके यशस्वी पुत्र युवा थे। वहाँ एक कौआ रहता था और वह अनेक प्रकार के बचे हुए भोजन पर निर्वाह करता था।

तस्मै सदा प्रयच्छन्ति वैश्यपुत्राः कुमारकाः मांसोदनं दधि क्षीरं पायसं मधुसर्पिषी

The young sons of the vaiśya always gave it meat, curds, milk, payasam, honey and butter.

वैश्य के युवा पुत्र इसे हमेशा मांस, दही, दूध, पायसम, शहद और मक्खन देते थे।

स चोच्छिष्टभृतः काको वैश्यपुत्रैः कुमारकैः सदृशान्पक्षिणो दृप्तः श्रेयसश्चावमन्यते

The crow subsisted on the leftovers that were given by the young sons of the vaiśya. It became insolent and showed no respect to birds that were its equal or superior.

कौआ वैश्य के युवा पुत्रों द्वारा दिए गए बचे हुए भोजन पर जीवित रहता था। वह ढीठ हो गया और उसने उन पक्षियों के प्रति कोई सम्मान नहीं दिखाया जो उसके बराबर या श्रेष्ठ थे।

अथ हंसाः समुद्रान्ते कदाचिदभिपातिनः गरुडस्य गतौ तुल्याश्चक्राङ्गा हृष्टचेतसः

Once, it so happened that swans descended on the other side of the ocean. They were cheerful in their hearts and could go anywhere at will.

एक बार ऐसा हुआ कि हंस समुद्र के दूसरी ओर उतरे। वे मन से प्रसन्न थे और इच्छानुसार कहीं भी जा सकते थे।

कुमारकास्ततो हंसान्दृष्ट्वा काकमथाब्रुवन् भवानेव विशिष्टो हि पतत्रिभ्यो विहंगम

Their speed was like that of Gāruḍa. On seeing the swans, the young boys spoke to the crow. "O bird! You are superior to all the winged birds."

उनकी गति गरुड़ के समान थी। हंसों को देखकर युवा लड़के कौवे से बोले। "हे पक्षी! तुम सभी पंख वाले पक्षियों से श्रेष्ठ हो।"

प्रतार्यमाणस्तु स तैरल्पबुद्धिभिरण्डजः तद्वचः सत्यमित्येव मौर्ख्याद्दर्पाच्च मन्यते

The one who was born from an egg was thus addressed by those who were of limited intelligence. Because of his stupidity and insolence, he regarded those words to be true.

जो अंडे से पैदा हुआ था, उसे सीमित बुद्धि वाले लोग इसी प्रकार संबोधित करते थे। अपनी मूर्खता और उद्दंडता के कारण उसने उन शब्दों को सत्य मान लिया।

तान्सोऽभिपत्य जिज्ञासुः क एषां श्रेष्ठभागिति उच्छिष्टदर्पितः काको बहूनां दूरपातिनाम्

He asked those who could travel long distances who among them was the swiftest in speed. The swans could travel long distances.

उन्होंने उन लोगों से पूछा जो लंबी दूरी की यात्रा कर सकते थे, उनमें से गति में सबसे तेज़ कौन था। हंस लम्बी दूरी तय कर सकते थे।

तेषां यं प्रवरं मेने हंसानां दूरपातिनाम् तमाह्वयत दुर्बुद्धिः पताम इति पक्षिणम्

But because of insolence and evil intelligence, the crow that fed on leftovers challenged that bird to a test of flight.

लेकिन जिद और बुरी बुद्धि के कारण बचा हुआ भोजन खाने वाले कौवे ने उस पक्षी को उड़ान की परीक्षा के लिए चुनौती दी।

तच्छ्रुत्वा प्राहसन्हंसा ये तत्रासन्समागताः भाषतो बहु काकस्य बलिनः पततां वराः इदमूचुश्च चक्राङ्गा वचः काकं विहंगमाः

On hearing these words of the crow, the swans that had assembled there, powerful and supreme birds, began to laugh. Those birds, which could go anywhere at will, spoke these words to the crow.

कौवे की यह बात सुनकर वहां एकत्रित शक्तिशाली और श्रेष्ठ पक्षी हंस हंसने लगे। ये शब्द उन पक्षियों ने कौए से कहे, जो अपनी इच्छा से कहीं भी जा सकते थे।

वयं हंसाश्चरामेमां पृथिवीं मानसौकसः पक्षिणां च वयं नित्यं दूरपातेन पूजिताः

We are swans that roam the earth. We live in Lake Mānasa. Among birds, we are always revered as those that can travel long distances.

हम धरती पर विचरण करने वाले हंस हैं। हम मनासा झील में रहते हैं। पक्षियों के बीच, हमें हमेशा उन पक्षियों के रूप में सम्मानित किया जाता है जो लंबी दूरी की यात्रा कर सकते हैं।

कथं नु हंसं बलिनं वज्राङ्गं दूरपातिनम् काको भूत्वा निपतने समाह्वयसि दुर्मते कथं त्वं पतनं काक सहास्माभिर्ब्रवीषि तत्

A swan is powerful. Its limbs are like a vajra. It can travel a great distance. O evil-minded one! You are a crow. How can you issue such a challenge? O crow! How will you fly with us?"

हंस शक्तिशाली होता है. इसके अंग वज्र के समान हैं। यह काफी लंबी दूरी तय कर सकता है. हे दुष्टबुद्धि! तुम एक कौवा हो. आप ऐसी चुनौती कैसे दे सकते हैं? हे कौए! तुम हमारे साथ कैसे उड़ोगे?”

अथ हंसवचो मूढः कुत्सयित्वा पुनः पुनः प्रजगादोत्तरं काकः कत्थनो जातिलाघवात्

They laughed and told him that. Because of the limited intelligence of its species, the stupid crow repeatedly questioned the words of the swans. Eventually, it replied,

वे हंसे और उससे यह बात कही। अपनी प्रजाति की सीमित बुद्धि के कारण मूर्ख कौआ बार-बार हंसों की बातों पर सवाल उठाता था। आख़िरकार, इसने उत्तर दिया,

शतमेकं च पातानां पतितास्मि न संशयः शतयोजनमेकैकं विचित्रं विविधं तथा

"There is no doubt that I will fly in one hundred and one different kinds of ways. I will fly each span of a hundred yojanā-s in a beautiful and varied way.

"इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि मैं एक सौ एक अलग-अलग तरीकों से उड़ूंगा। मैं सौ योजन के प्रत्येक विस्तार को सुंदर और विविध तरीके से उड़ाऊंगा।

उड्डीनमवडीनं च प्रडीनं डीनमेव च निडीनमथ संडीनं तिर्यक्चातिगतानि च

I will rise up and swoop down. I will circle and fly straight. I will fly slowly and I will fly fast. I will fly diagonally. I will traverse slowly.

मैं उठूंगा और झपट्टा मारूंगा. मैं चक्कर लगाऊंगा और सीधा उड़ जाऊंगा। मैं धीरे-धीरे उड़ूंगा और मैं तेजी से उड़ूंगा। मैं तिरछे उड़ूंगा. मैं धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ूंगा.

विडीनं परिडीनं च पराडीनं सुडीनकम् अतिडीनं महाडीनं निडीनं परिडीनकम्

I will whirl around. I will move gently and fast. I will then fly extremely fast and even faster than that. I will swoop down and rise up again.

मैं चारों ओर चक्कर लगाऊंगा. मैं धीरे और तेजी से आगे बढ़ूंगा. मैं तब बहुत तेजी से और उससे भी तेज गति से उड़ूंगा। मैं झपट्टा मारकर फिर ऊपर उठ जाऊंगा.

गतागतप्रतिगता बह्वीश्च निकुडीनिकाः कर्तास्मि मिषतां वोऽद्य ततो द्रक्ष्यथ मे बलम्

Forward, backwards and sideways, I will show many techniques of flight. I will show all these to you. Behold my strength."

आगे, पीछे और बगल में, मैं उड़ान की कई तकनीकें दिखाऊंगा। मैं तुम्हें ये सब दिखाऊंगा. मेरी ताकत देखो।"

एवमुक्ते तु काकेन प्रहस्यैको विहंगमः उवाच हंसस्तं काकं वचनं तन्निबोध मे

Having been thus addressed by the crow, one of the swans laughed. The swan spoke these words to the crow.

कौवे द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर हंसों में से एक हँसा। ये बातें हंस ने कौए से कहीं।

शतमेकं च पातानां त्वं काक पतिता ध्रुवम् एकमेव तु ये पातं विदुः सर्वे विहंगमाः

"Listen to me. O crow! There is no doubt that you will fly in one hundred and one different kinds of ways. I will however fly in the only way that all the birds know.

"मेरी बात सुनो। हे कौवे! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि तुम एक सौ एक अलग-अलग तरीकों से उड़ोगे। हालांकि मैं उसी तरीके से उड़ूंगा जो सभी पक्षी जानते हैं।

तमहं पतिता काक नान्यं जानामि कंचन पत त्वमपि रक्ताक्ष येन वा तेन मन्यसे

O crow! That is the way I will fly, because I do not know any other. O red-eyed one! You fly in whichever way you think appropriate."

हे कौए! मैं इसी तरह उड़ूंगा, क्योंकि मैं किसी और को नहीं जानता। हे लाल आँखों वाले! आप जिस तरह उचित समझें, उड़ान भरें।”

अथ काकाः प्रजहसुर्ये तत्रासन्समागताः कथमेकेन पातेन हंसः पातशतं जयेत्

At this, the crows who had assembled there began to laugh. "How will the swan fly in only one kind of way and defeat flight in one hundred different ways?"

इस पर वहां इकट्ठे हुए कौवे हंसने लगे। "हंस एक ही तरह से कैसे उड़ेगा और सौ अलग-अलग तरीकों से उड़ान को कैसे हरा देगा?"

एकेनैव शतस्यैकं पातेनाभिभविष्यति हंसस्य पतितं काको बलवानाशुविक्रमः

They began to fly, one in one technique, and the other used one hundred and one flying techniques. Powerful and swift in strength, the swan and the crow flew.

उन्होंने उड़ान भरना शुरू किया, एक ने एक तकनीक का इस्तेमाल किया और दूसरे ने एक सौ एक उड़ान तकनीकों का इस्तेमाल किया। शक्तिशाली और तेज़, हंस और कौआ उड़ गए।

प्रपेततुः स्पर्धयाथ ततस्तौ हंसवायसौ एकपाती च चक्राङ्गः काकः पातशतेन च

The swan and the crow flew, rivalling each other. The one that could fly anywhere flew. The crow also flew.

हंस और कौआ एक दूसरे से प्रतिस्पर्धा करते हुए उड़ रहे थे। जो कहीं भी उड़ सकता था, उड़ गया। कौआ भी उड़ गया.

पेतिवानथ चक्राङ्गः पेतिवानथ वायसः विसिस्मापयिषुः पातैराचक्षाणोऽऽत्मनः क्रियाम्

Each flew so as to cause wonder in the rival and praised his own deeds.

प्रत्येक ने प्रतिद्वंद्वी को आश्चर्यचकित करने के लिए उड़ान भरी और अपने कार्यों की प्रशंसा की।

अथ काकस्य चित्राणि पतितानीतराणि च दृष्ट्वा प्रमुदिताः काका विनेदुरथ तैः स्वरैः

The crow flew in a myriad and colourful ways. On seeing this, the assembled crows were delighted and started to caw loudly.

कौआ असंख्य और रंगीन तरीकों से उड़ गया। यह देखकर इकट्ठे हुए कौवे प्रसन्न हो गये और जोर-जोर से काँव-काँव करने लगे।

हंसांश्चावहसन्ति स्म प्रावदन्नप्रियाणि च उत्पत्योत्पत्य च प्राहुर्मुहूर्तमिति चेति च

The swans laughed at them and uttered many unpleasant words. From one instant to another, they repeatedly rose up and swooped down.

हंसों ने उन पर हँसते हुए अनेक अप्रिय शब्द कहे। एक क्षण से दूसरे क्षण तक वे बार-बार ऊपर उठते और झपट्टा मारते।

वृक्षाग्रेभ्यः स्थलेभ्यश्च निपतन्त्युत्पतन्ति च कुर्वाणा विविधान्रावानाशंसन्तस्तदा जयम्

Descending and ascending, they were on the tops of trees and on the ground. They uttered many kinds of noises, signifying their victory.

उतरते और चढ़ते हुए, वे पेड़ों की चोटियों और ज़मीन पर थे। उन्होंने अपनी विजय का संकेत देते हुए अनेक प्रकार की ध्वनियाँ निकालीं।

हंसस्तु मृदुकेनैव विक्रान्तुमुपचक्रमे प्रत्यहीयत काकाच्च मुहूर्तमिव मारिष

O venerable one! With that single and gentle motion, the valiant swan continued to fly and for an instant, it seemed as if it had been defeated by the crow.

हे आदरणीय! उस एकल और सौम्य गति के साथ, बहादुर हंस उड़ता रहा और एक पल के लिए ऐसा लगा जैसे वह कौवे से हार गया हो।

अवमन्य रयं हंसानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् योऽसावुत्पतितो हंसः सोऽसावेव प्रहीयते

Slighting the swans, the crows spoke these words. "The swan that rose up into the sky is clearly being defeated."

हंसों को झिंझोड़कर कौवे ने ये बातें कहीं। "जो हंस आकाश में उड़ गया, वह स्पष्ट रूप से पराजित हो रहा है।"

अथ हंसः स तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रापतत्पश्चिमां दिशम् उपर्युपरि वेगेन सागरं वरुणालयम्

On hearing these words, the swan flew in a westward direction. It increased its speed and flew over the ocean, Vāruṇa's abode.

ये शब्द सुनकर हंस पश्चिम दिशा की ओर उड़ गया। इसने अपनी गति बढ़ा दी और वरुण के निवास स्थान समुद्र के ऊपर से उड़ गया।

ततो भीः प्राविशत्काकं तदा तत्र विचेतसम् द्वीपद्रुमानपश्यन्तं निपतन्तं श्रमान्वितम् निपतेयं क्व नु श्रान्त इति तस्मिञ्जलार्णवे

At this, fear penetrated the crow and it lost its senses. It did not see any islands or trees, where it could descend and rest, when it was tired. "When I am tired, where will I descend in this ocean of water?

इस पर कौवे के मन में भय समा गया और वह अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठा। उसे कोई द्वीप या पेड़ नहीं दिखे, जहाँ वह थककर आराम कर सके। 'जब मैं थक जाऊँगा तो इस भवसागर में कहाँ उतरूँगा?

अविषह्यः समुद्रो हि बहुसत्त्वगणालयः महाभूतशतोद्भासी नभसोऽपि विशिष्यते

This ocean is the abode of a large number of beings and is intolerable. There are many large beings that reside here and it is superior to the sky."

यह महासागर बड़ी संख्या में प्राणियों का निवास स्थान है और असहनीय है। यहाँ बहुत से बड़े-बड़े प्राणी निवास करते हैं और यह आकाश से भी श्रेष्ठ है।”

गाम्भीर्याद्धि समुद्रस्य न विशेषः कुलाधम दिगम्बराम्भसां कर्ण समुद्रस्था हि दुर्जयाः विदूरपातात्तोयस्य किं पुनः कर्ण वायसः

O worst of your lineage! The ocean is superior to everything in depth. O Karṇa! It is as limitless as the sky. The ocean is impossible to conquer. O Karṇa! Given its extremely long distance, what could a crow do?

हे तुम्हारे वंश के सबसे बुरे! समुद्र गहराई में हर चीज़ से श्रेष्ठ है। हे कर्ण! यह आकाश की तरह असीमित है। समुद्र को जीतना असंभव है. हे कर्ण! इसकी अत्यधिक लंबी दूरी को देखते हुए, एक कौआ क्या कर सकता है?

अथ हंसोऽभ्यतिक्रम्य मुहूर्तमिति चेति च अवेक्षमाणस्तं काकं नाशक्नोद्व्यपसर्पितुम् अतिक्रम्य च चक्राङ्गः काकं तं समुदैक्षत

In a short while, the swan travelled a long distance. It could not leave the crow behind and glanced back at it. Having overtaken the crow, the one that could travel anywhere at will glanced back at it.

थोड़ी ही देर में हंस ने बहुत दूर तक यात्रा की। वह कौवे को पीछे नहीं छोड़ सका और उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा। कौवे से आगे निकलने के बाद, जो अपनी इच्छानुसार कहीं भी जा सकता था, उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा।

तं तथा हीयमानं च हंसो दृष्ट्वाब्रवीदिदम् उज्जिहीर्षुर्निमज्जन्तं स्मरन्सत्पुरुषव्रतम्

Seeing that it was exhausted, the swan wished to rescue the one who was sinking and remembered the vows observed by righteous people.

यह देखकर कि वह थक गया है, हंस ने डूबते हुए व्यक्ति को बचाने की कामना की और धर्मी लोगों द्वारा की गई प्रतिज्ञा को याद किया।

बहूनि पतनानि त्वमाचक्षाणो मुहुर्मुहुः पतस्यव्याहरंश्चेदं न नो गुह्यं प्रभाषसे

It said, "You repeatedly spoke about many different kinds of flight. You should not speak about these techniques of flight. They are a mystery to us.

इसमें कहा गया, "आपने बार-बार कई अलग-अलग प्रकार की उड़ान के बारे में बात की। आपको उड़ान की इन तकनीकों के बारे में नहीं बोलना चाहिए। वे हमारे लिए एक रहस्य हैं।"

किं नाम पतनं काक यत्त्वं पतसि सांप्रतम् जलं स्पृशसि पक्षाभ्यां तुण्डेन च पुनः पुनः

O crow! What is the name of this pattern of flight that you are now being forced to fly? Your wings and your beak are repeatedly touching the water.

हे कौए! उड़ान के इस पैटर्न का नाम क्या है जिसे उड़ाने के लिए अब आपको मजबूर किया जा रहा है? आपके पंख और आपकी चोंच बार-बार पानी को छू रहे हैं।

स पक्षाभ्यां स्पृशन्नार्तस्तुण्डेन जलमर्णवे काको दृढं परिश्रान्तः सहसा निपपात ह

You are touching the waters of the ocean with your wings and your beak. O crow! You are extremely exhausted and you will suddenly fall down."

आप अपने पंखों और चोंच से समुद्र के पानी को छू रहे हैं। हे कौए! तुम बहुत थक गये हो और अचानक गिर जाओगे।”

हंस उवाच शतमेकं च पातानां यत्प्रभाषसि वायस नानाविधानीह पुरा तच्चानृतमिहाद्य ते

The swan said: "O crow! You spoke about one hundred and one different techniques of flight. Earlier, you spoke about many techniques. All of those have come to nought now."

हंस ने कहा: "हे कौए! तुमने उड़ान की एक सौ एक अलग-अलग तकनीकों के बारे में बात की थी। पहले, तुमने कई तकनीकों के बारे में बात की थी। वे सभी अब शून्य हो गए हैं।"

काक उवाच उच्छिष्टदर्पितो हंस मन्येऽऽत्मानं सुपर्णवत् अवमन्य बहूंश्चाहं काकानन्यांश्च पक्षिणः प्राणैर्हंस प्रपद्ये त्वां द्वीपान्तं प्रापयस्व माम्

The crow replied: "O swan! Having fed on leftovers, I became insolent. I thought myself to be the equal of Suparṇa. I showed disrespect to many other crows and all birds. I seek my life back from you. Take me to the shores of an island.

कौवे ने उत्तर दिया: "हे हंस! बचा हुआ खाना खाकर मैं ढीठ हो गया हूं। मैं खुद को सुपर्णा के बराबर समझता था। मैंने कई अन्य कौवों और सभी पक्षियों का अनादर किया। मैं तुमसे अपना जीवन वापस मांगता हूं। मुझे एक द्वीप के तट पर ले चलो।"

यद्यहं स्वस्तिमान्हंस स्वदेशं प्राप्नुयां पुनः न कंचिदवमन्येयमापदो मां समुद्धर

O swan! Let me obtain assurance and let me return to my country again. I will never show disrespect to anyone again. Save me."

हे हंस! मुझे आश्वासन प्राप्त करने दीजिए और मुझे फिर से अपने देश लौटने दीजिए। मैं फिर कभी किसी का अनादर नहीं करूंगा. मुझे बचाओ।"

तमेवंवादिनं दीनं विलपन्तमचेतनम् काक काकेति वाशन्तं निमज्जन्तं महार्णवे

It was distressed and spoke in this way. Devoid of its senses, it lamented. Submerged in the great ocean, it cawed.

यह व्यथित होकर इस प्रकार बोला। वह अपनी इंद्रियों से रहित होकर विलाप करने लगा। महान् सागर में डूबकर वह काँव-काँव करने लगा।

तथैत्य वायसं हंसो जलक्लिन्नं सुदुर्दशम् पद्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य वेपन्तं पृष्ठमारोपयच्छनैः

The crow was drenched in water and faced a great hardship. The swan picked it up with its feet and gently raised it onto its back.

कौआ पानी में भीग गया और उसे बड़ी कठिनाई का सामना करना पड़ा। हंस ने उसे अपने पैरों से उठाया और धीरे से अपनी पीठ पर उठा लिया।

आरोप्य पृष्ठं काकं तं हंसः कर्ण विचेतसम् आजगाम पुनर्द्वीपं स्पर्धया पेततुर्यतः

O Karṇa! The swan made the crow, bereft of its senses, climb astride its back. They again quickly flew to the island where the match had started.

हे कर्ण! हंस ने होश खो बैठे कौवे को अपनी पीठ पर बैठाया। वे फिर तेजी से उस द्वीप की ओर उड़ गए जहां मैच शुरू हुआ था।

संस्थाप्य तं चापि पुनः समाश्वास्य च खेचरम् गतो यथेप्सितं देशं हंसो मन इवाशुगः

Having placed the bird down there, it comforted it. The swan, as swift as thought, then flew away to the country it wished to.

पक्षी को नीचे रखकर उसने उसे सांत्वना दी। हंस, जैसा सोचा था, उतना तेज़, फिर जिस देश में जाना चाहता था, उड़ गया।

उच्छिष्टभोजनात्काको यथा वैश्यकुले तु सः एवं त्वमुच्छिष्टभृतो धार्तराष्ट्रैर्न संशयः सदृशाञ्श्रेयसश्चापि सर्वान्कर्णातिमन्यसे

This is what happened to the crow that fed on leftovers from a vaiśya household. There is no doubt that you have subsisted on leftovers from the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. O Karṇa! That is the reason you show disrespect to all those who are your equal and superior.

यह उस कौवे के साथ हुआ जो एक वैश्य घर का बचा हुआ भोजन खाता था। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि आपने धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के बचे हुए भोजन पर निर्वाह किया है। हे कर्ण! यही कारण है कि आप उन सभी का अनादर करते हैं जो आपके बराबर और श्रेष्ठ हैं।

द्रोणद्रौणिकृपैर्गुप्तो भीष्मेणान्यैश्च कौरवैः विराटनगरे पार्थमेकं किं नावधीस्तदा

You were protected by Droṇa, Droṇa's son, Kṛpa, Bhīṣma and the other Kaurava-s in Virāṭa's city. Pārtha was single-handed.

आप विराट नगर में द्रोण, द्रोण के पुत्र, कृपा, भीष्म और अन्य कौरवों द्वारा संरक्षित थे। पार्थ अकेला था।

यत्र व्यस्ताः समस्ताश्च निर्जिताः स्थ किरीटिना सृगाला इव सिंहेन क्व ते वीर्यमभूत्तदा

Why didn't you kill him then? All of you were distressed and vanquished by Kirīṭī, like jackals defeated by a lion. Where was your valour then?

फिर तुमने उसे क्यों नहीं मारा? जैसे सिंह से गीदड़ हार जाते हैं, वैसे ही तुम सब लोग किरीटी से व्यथित और परास्त हो गये। तब आपकी वीरता कहाँ थी?

भ्रातरं च हतं दृष्ट्वा निर्जितः सव्यसाचिना पश्यतां कुरुवीराणां प्रथमं त्वं पलायथाः

When you saw that your brother was defeated and killed by Savyasachi, while all the brave ones among the Kuru-s looked on, you were the first to run away.

जब तुमने देखा कि तुम्हारे भाई को सव्यसाची ने हरा दिया और मार डाला, जबकि कुरुवंश के सभी शूरवीर देखते रह गये, तो सबसे पहले तुम ही भागे।

तथा द्वैतवने कर्ण गन्धर्वैः समभिद्रुतः कुरून्समग्रानुत्सृज्य प्रथमं त्वं पलायथाः

O Karṇa! Like that, when you were attacked by the gāndharva-s in Dvaitavana, you abandoned all the Kuru-s and were the first to run away.

हे कर्ण! उसी तरह, जब द्वैतवन में गंधर्वों ने आप पर हमला किया, तो आपने सभी कौरवों को छोड़ दिया और सबसे पहले भाग गए।

हत्वा जित्वा च गन्धर्वांश्चित्रसेनमुखान्रणे कर्ण दुर्योधनं पार्थः सभार्यं सममोचयत्

Pārtha killed and defeated the gāndharva-s, with Citrasenā at the forefront, in battle. O Karṇa! He freed Duryodhana and his wife.

पार्थ ने युद्ध में सबसे आगे चित्रसेन के साथ गंधर्वों को मारा और परास्त किया। हे कर्ण! उन्होंने दुर्योधन और उसकी पत्नी को मुक्त कर दिया।

पुनः प्रभावः पार्थस्य पुराणः केशवस्य च कथितः कर्ण रामेण सभायां राजसंसदि

Then again, in earlier times, in the assembly of the kings, Rāma himself spoke about the power of Pārtha and Keśava.

फिर, पहले के समय में, राजाओं की सभा में, राम ने स्वयं पार्थ और केशव की शक्ति के बारे में बात की थी।

सततं च तदश्रौषीर्वचनं द्रोणभीष्मयोः अवध्यौ वदतोः कृष्णौ संनिधौ वै महीक्षिताम्

In the presence of the kings, Bhīṣma and Droṇa have always said that the two Kṛṣṇās cannot be killed. You have heard that.

राजाओं की उपस्थिति में भीष्म और द्रोण ने सदैव कहा कि दोनों कृष्णों को नहीं मारा जा सकता। वो तो आपने सुना ही होगा.

कियन्तं तत्र वक्ष्यामि येन येन धनंजयः त्वत्तोऽतिरिक्तः सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्यो ब्राह्मणो यथा

I have only told you a little bit about how Dhanañjayā is superior to you in various ways, like a brāhmaṇa is superior to all other beings.

मैंने आपको केवल इस बारे में थोड़ा सा बताया है कि कैसे धनंजय विभिन्न तरीकों से आपसे श्रेष्ठ है, जैसे एक ब्राह्मण अन्य सभी प्राणियों से श्रेष्ठ है।

इदानीमेव द्रष्टासि प्रधने स्यन्दने स्थितौ पुत्रं च वसुदेवस्य पाण्डवं च धनंजयम्

You will soon see that expensive chariot and Vāsudeva's son and Pāṇḍava Dhanañjayā stationed on it.

आप जल्द ही उस महंगे रथ और वासुदेव के पुत्र और पांडव धनंजय को उस पर तैनात देखेंगे।

देवासुरमनुष्येषु प्रख्यातौ यौ नरर्षभौ प्रकाशेनाभिविख्यातौ त्वं तु खद्योतवन्नृषु

Those two bulls among men are famous among gods, āsura-s and humans. They are renowned among men because of their radiance and you are like a firefly.

वे दोनों बैल देवताओं, असुरों तथा मनुष्यों में प्रसिद्ध हैं। वे अपनी कांति के कारण मनुष्यों में प्रसिद्ध हैं और आप जुगनू के समान हैं।

एवं विद्वान्मावमंस्थाः सूतपुत्राच्युतार्जुनौ नृसिंहौ तौ नरश्वा त्वं जोषमास्स्व विकत्थन

O son of a sūta! Know this to be your state. Those two lions among men, Acyuta and Arjuna, will destroy you. Do not indulge in self-praise."

हे सूतपुत्र! इसे अपना राज्य जानो। वे दो नर सिंह, अच्युत और अर्जुन, तुम्हें नष्ट कर देंगे। आत्मप्रशंसा में मत पड़ो।"
