Sañjaya said: "They fled because of that descent of arrows. The soldiers of the Kuru-s were routed. However, they waited at a distance and glanced back, gazing at Dhanañjayā's weapons, which were descending like lightning in all directions.

Karṇa affixed an extremely sharp and flaming arrow that was capable of slaying the enemy. This had a serpent in its mouth. That terrible arrow had been carefully preserved and washed well, protected well for Pārtha's destruction.
कर्ण ने एक अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण और ज्वलनशील बाण लगाया जो शत्रु का संहार करने में सक्षम था। इसके मुँह में साँप था। उस भयानक बाण को पार्थ के विनाश के लिए अच्छी तरह से धोकर सावधानीपूर्वक संरक्षित किया गया था।
It had been worshipped and laid down on a bed of sandalwood paste. That immensely virulent weapon was lying down in a golden quiver. It was generated from the lineage of Airāvata and flamed. Wishing to kill Phālguna in the battle, he aimed at his head.

On seeing that Vaikartaṇa had affixed that arrow, the great-souled king of Madra said, "O Karṇa! This arrow will not be able to reach his neck. Fix and aim another arrow that can sever his head."

Having said this, he released that arrow, the serpent which he had worshipped for many years. He said, "O Phālguna! You have been slain," and swiftly shot the arrow.

The ornament that adorned Arjuna's head was famous throughout the earth, heaven and the waters. In his anger and through the strength of his weapon, the son of a sūta used the arrow to bring it down from his head.

It was extremely expensive in form and generated terror amongst the enemy. It was fragrant and brought happiness to the one who wore it. When he killed the enemies of the gods, the lord of the gods was delighted and himself gave it to Kirīṭī.

It could not be destroyed by Hara, the lord of the waters or the protector of riches, and by the pināka, pāśa or vajra and the best of arrows. The supreme gods were incapable of withstanding it. However, using the serpent, Vṛṣa now destroyed it.

मुकुट अनेक रत्नों से सुसज्जित था। सर्प ने बलपूर्वक उसे अर्जुन के सिर से अलग कर दिया। यह ऐसा था मानो अंकुरों और पुष्पित वृक्षों से युक्त एक उत्कृष्ट पर्वत शिखर, महान इंद्र के वज्र से ढह गया हो।

तथैव शब्दो भुवनेष्वभूत्तदा; जना व्यवस्यन्व्यथिताश्च चस्खलुः
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The earth, the sky, heaven and the waters seemed to be whirled around by a tempest. Such a noise arose on earth then. Though they tried to control themselves, people were distressed and trembled.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पृथ्वी, आकाश, स्वर्ग और जल एक तूफ़ान द्वारा चारों ओर घूमते हुए प्रतीत हो रहे थे। ऐसा शोर उठा धरती पर तब। हालाँकि उन्होंने खुद को नियंत्रित करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन लोग परेशान थे और कांप रहे थे।
But Arjuna was not distressed. He tied the hair on his head with a white garment. His head shone with complete, radiant rays, like sunrise on a mountain.

The serpent released from Karṇa's arms was extremely radiant, like the rays of the sun. That giant serpent was firm in its enmity of Arjuna. It struck the diadem and fell down.
कर्ण की भुजाओं से छूटा हुआ सर्प सूर्य की किरणों के समान अत्यंत कांतिमान था। वह विशालकाय सर्प अर्जुन से अपनी शत्रुता पर दृढ़ था। वह मुकुट से टकराया और नीचे गिर गया।
It told him, "Know who I am. I am firm in my enmity of the two Kṛṣṇās, because they slew my mother." In the battle, Kṛṣṇā then spoke to Pārtha. "The giant serpent is firm in its enmity. Slay it."

Having been thus addressed by Madhusūdana, the wielder of Gāṇḍīva, fierce in using the bow and arrow against enemies, asked, "Who is the serpent who is advancing against me of his own accord, as if into Gāruḍa's gaping mouth?"

वियद्गतो बाणनिकृत्तदेहो; ह्यनेकरूपो निहतास्य माता
Kṛṣṇā replied: "In Khāṇḍava, you satisfied the blazing one with the bow in your hand. You killed his mother, taking her to be a single snake. However, though her body was destroyed by the arrows, he was in the sky, covered by her."
कृष्ण ने उत्तर दिया: "खांडव में, तुमने अपने हाथ में धनुष लेकर उस तेजस्वी को संतुष्ट किया था। तुमने उसकी माँ को एक साँप समझकर मार डाला था। हालाँकि, यद्यपि उसका शरीर बाणों से नष्ट हो गया था, वह आकाश में था, उसके द्वारा ढका हुआ।"
At the time, Karṇa, foremost among brave men, glanced sideways at Dhanañjayā and pierced him with ten arrows that had been sharpened on stone and were tufted with the feathers of peacocks.

Arjuna drew his bow all the way back up to his ears and struck him with twelve sharp arrows. Those iron arrows were like venomous serpents in their force. He drew his bow all the way back up to his ears and shot them. They were released well.
अर्जुन ने अपना धनुष उसके कानों तक खींच लिया और बारह तीखे बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया। वे लोहे के बाण अपनी शक्ति में विषैले सर्पों के समान थे। उसने अपना धनुष वापस अपने कानों तक खींचा और उन पर तीर चलाया। उन्हें अच्छे से रिहा कर दिया गया.
They shattered his supreme and colourful armour, as if they were robbing him of his life. Having drunk Karṇa's blood, they penetrated the ground, with the tufts smeared with blood.
उन्होंने उसके सर्वोच्च और रंगीन कवच को चकनाचूर कर दिया, मानो वे उसका जीवन छीन रहे हों। कर्ण का खून पीने के बाद, वे रक्त से लथपथ शिखाओं के साथ जमीन में घुस गए।
Vṛṣa became extremely angry at being struck by the arrows, like a giant serpent that has been beaten with a staff. He swiftly shot supreme arrows that were like giant serpents with excellent poison.
बाणों से घायल होने पर वृष अत्यंत क्रोधित हो उठे, जैसे लाठी से पिटे हुए विशालकाय सर्प को। उसने बड़ी तेजी से श्रेष्ठ बाण चलाए जो उत्तम विष से युक्त विशाल सर्पों के समान थे।

He struck Janārdana with twelve arrows and Arjuna with ninety-nine. Karṇa again pierced Pāṇḍava with terrible arrows and roared loudly.
उन्होंने जनार्दन को बारह बाणों से और अर्जुन को निन्यानवे बाणों से घायल कर दिया। कर्ण ने पुनः भयानक बाणों से पांडवों को घायल कर दिया और बड़े ज़ोर से गर्जना की।
Pāṇḍava could not tolerate this joy. He was like Indra in his valour. He shot supreme arrows, like Indra energetically striking Bāla.
पांडव इस खुशी को सहन नहीं कर सके। वह वीरता में इन्द्र के समान था। उसने सर्वोच्च बाण चलाए, जैसे इंद्र ने बाला पर जोरदार प्रहार किया हो।

Arjuna shot ninety arrows at Karṇa and each of them was like Yāma's staff. Those arrows severely mangled his body, like a mountain shattered by thunder.
अर्जुन ने कर्ण पर नब्बे बाण चलाए और उनमें से प्रत्येक यम की लाठी के समान था। उन बाणों ने उसके शरीर को बुरी तरह से क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया, मानो वज्र से टूटा हुआ पर्वत हो।

His radiant and excellent armour was carefully crafted by the best of craftsmen over a long period of time. It was extremely expensive. In an instant, Pāṇḍava shattered this into many fragments with his arrows.
उनके उज्ज्वल और उत्कृष्ट कवच को लंबे समय तक सर्वश्रेष्ठ कारीगरों द्वारा सावधानीपूर्वक तैयार किया गया था। यह बेहद महंगा था. पल भर में पांडवों ने अपने बाणों से इसे कई टुकड़ों में तोड़ दिया।

Having deprived him of his armour with those excellent arrows, he then angrily struck him with four arrows. Distressed and struck by his enemy, he was like a diseased person, suffering from bile, phlegm, wind and wounds.
उन्होंने उन उत्तम बाणों से उसका कवच छीन लिया, फिर क्रोधपूर्वक चार बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया। वह अपने शत्रु से त्रस्त और मारा हुआ रोगी के समान पित्त, कफ, वायु और घावों से पीड़ित था।

Arjuna spiritedly shot sharp arrows from the great circle of his bow. He made great efforts and struck with strength. Karṇa was struck by many supreme arrows and they penetrated his inner organs.
अर्जुन ने उत्साहपूर्वक अपने धनुष के विशाल घेरे से तीखे बाण छोड़े। उसने बड़े प्रयत्न किये और शक्ति से प्रहार किया। कर्ण पर अनेक श्रेष्ठ बाणों का प्रहार हुआ और वे उसके आंतरिक अंगों में घुस गये।
Karṇa was struck by many of Pārtha's sharp arrows. He was severely wounded by those arrows that were fierce and forceful. He looked as beautiful as a mountain with red chalk, from which, streams of red water were flowing down the slopes.
पार्थ के अनेक तीक्ष्ण बाणों से कर्ण घायल हो गया। उन भयंकर एवं शक्तिशाली बाणों से वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया। वह लाल खड़िया से बने पर्वत के समान सुन्दर लग रहा था, जिसकी ढलान से लाल पानी की धाराएँ बह रही थीं।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Kirīṭī struck Karṇa and his horses and his chariot with vatsadanta arrows. Making every effort, he used gold-tufted arrows to envelope the directions.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! किरीटी ने वत्सदन्त बाणों से कर्ण और उसके घोड़ों तथा उसके रथ को घायल कर दिया। हर संभव प्रयास करते हुए, उन्होंने दिशाओं को घेरने के लिए सोने से जड़े तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।

स वत्सदन्तैः पृथुपीनवक्षाः; समाचितः स्माधिरथिर्विभाति
सुपुष्पिताशोकपलाशशाल्मलि;र्यथाचलः स्पन्दनचन्दनायुतः
When he was struck in his broad chest by those vatsadanta arrows, Adhiratha's son looked resplendent. He looked like a blossoming aśoka, palāśa or śālmali tree, or like a trembling mountain with many sandalwood trees.
जब उन वत्सदंत बाणों से अधिरथ का पुत्र अधिरथ की चौड़ी छाती में लगा, तो वह शोभायमान हो उठा। वह खिले हुए अशोक, पलाश या शाल्मलि वृक्ष के समान अथवा अनेक चंदन के वृक्षों से युक्त कांपते हुए पर्वत के समान दिखता था।
O lord of the earth! With those many arrows stuck to his body, Karṇa looked beautiful in the battle. He looked like a valley in a mountain, covered with many large trees, or like a giant mountain, with sparkling karṇikāra trees.
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उन अनेक बाणों को अपने शरीर में धँसाये हुए कर्ण युद्ध में सुन्दर दिख रहा था। वह अनेक बड़े वृक्षों से आच्छादित पर्वत की एक घाटी की भाँति, या चमचमाते कर्णिका वृक्षों से युक्त एक विशाल पर्वत की भाँति दिखता था।

स बाणसंघान्धनुषा व्यवासृज;न्विभाति कर्णः शरजालरश्मिवान्
सलोहितो रक्तगभस्तिमण्डलो; दिवाकरोऽस्ताभिमुखो यथा तथा
Karṇa also shot a large number of arrows from his bow. With those nets of arrows as rays, he looked dazzling. He was like the sun advancing towards sunset, red and with a crimson solar disc.
कर्ण ने भी अपने धनुष से बड़ी संख्या में बाण छोड़े। किरणों के रूप में बाणों के उन जालों से वह तेजस्वी लग रहा था। वह सूर्यास्त की ओर बढ़ रहे सूरज की तरह था, लाल और लाल रंग की सौर डिस्क के साथ।
Those arrows were released from the arms of Adhiratha's son and blazed like giant serpents in the sky. In all the directions, they clashed with the sharp and fierce arrows released from Arjuna's arms and destroyed them.
वे बाण अधिरथ के पुत्र की भुजाओं से छूटकर आकाश में विशाल सर्पों के समान चमकने लगे। वे सभी दिशाओं में अर्जुन की भुजाओं से छूटे हुए तीखे एवं भयंकर बाणों से भिड़ गये और उन्हें नष्ट कर दिया।

घूर्णे रथे ब्राह्मणस्याभिशापा;द्रामादुपात्तेऽप्रतिभाति चास्त्रे
At that time, the earth trembled and the son of a sūta became confused in the battle. Because of the brāhmaṇa's curse, the chariot was whirled around in the encounter. Because of Rāma's curse, the weapons no longer manifested themselves.
उस समय पृथ्वी कांप उठी और सूतपुत्र युद्ध में भ्रमित हो गये। ब्राह्मण के श्राप के कारण रथ मुठभेड़ में इधर-उधर घूम गया। राम के श्राप के कारण हथियार अब प्रकट नहीं हुए।

धर्मप्रधानानभिपाति धर्म; इत्यब्रुवन्धर्मविदः सदैव
ममापि निम्नोऽद्य न पाति भक्ता;न्मन्ये न नित्यं परिपाति धर्मः
Unable to tolerate this, he whirled his garments and his arms around and lamented, "Those who know about dharma have always held that that dharma protects those who place dharma at the forefront. But instead of protecting one who is devoted, it is now bringing me down. I think that dharma does not always protect."

at someone who doesn't have arrows, at a person whose armour has been destroyed, or at a person whose weapons have been shattered and broken - Brave ones do not strike at such people, nor do kings and lords of the earth. O Kaunteya! You are brave. Wait for a short while.
किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति पर जिसके पास तीर नहीं हैं, जिस व्यक्ति पर कवच नष्ट हो गया है, या जिस व्यक्ति पर हथियार बिखर गए हैं और टूट गए हैं - ऐसे लोगों पर बहादुर लोग हमला नहीं करते हैं, न ही पृथ्वी के राजा और स्वामी ऐसा करते हैं। हे कौन्तेय! आप बहादुर हैं. थोड़ी देर रुको.

O Dhanañjayā! Let me extricate the wheel from the ground. You are stationed on your chariot. You should not kill me when I am on the ground. O Pāṇḍaveya! You and Vāsudeva are not frightened of me.
हे धनंजय! मुझे पहिये को ज़मीन से निकालने दो। आप अपने रथ पर तैनात हैं. जब मैं ज़मीन पर हो तो आपको मुझे नहीं मारना चाहिए। हे पाण्डवेय! आप और वासुदेव मुझसे भयभीत नहीं हैं।

You are a kṣatriya and you are the extender of a great lineage. O Pāṇḍava! Remember the instructions of dharma and wait for a short while."
