संजय उवाच अथोत्तरेण पाण्डूनां सेनायां ध्वनिरुत्थितः रथनागाश्वपत्तीनां दण्डधारेण वध्यताम्

Sañjaya said: At this time, a loud uproar arose towards the northern side of the Pāṇḍu soldiers. The rāṭha-s, elephants, horses and foot soldiers were being slaughtered by Daṇḍadhāra.

संजय ने कहा- इसी समय पाण्डु सैनिकों का उत्तरी भाग की ओर बड़े जोर से कोलाहल मच गया। दण्डधर द्वारा रथों, हाथियों, घोड़ों और पैदल सैनिकों का वध किया जा रहा था।

निवर्तयित्वा तु रथं केशवोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् वाहयन्नेव तुरगान्गरुडानिलरंहसः

Keśava reversed the direction of the chariot, but did not stop the swift horses, which were as fast as Gāruḍa or the wind. He told Arjuna,

केशव ने रथ की दिशा उलट दी, लेकिन तेज़ घोड़ों को नहीं रोका, जो गरुड़ या हवा के समान तेज़ थे। उन्होंने अर्जुन से कहा,

मागधोऽथाप्यतिक्रान्तो द्विरदेन प्रमाथिना भगदत्तादनवरः शिक्षया च बलेन च

"Māgadha is extremely powerful and is on an elephant that can crush. He is like Bhagadatta in training and strength.

"मगध अत्यंत शक्तिशाली है और एक हाथी पर सवार है जो कुचल सकता है। वह प्रशिक्षण और शक्ति में भगदत्त के समान है।

एनं हत्वा निहन्तासि पुनः संशप्तकानिति वाक्यान्ते प्रापयत्पार्थं दण्डधारान्तिकं प्रति

Having killed him, you will then slay the saṃśaptaka-s again." Having completed these words, he bore Pārtha towards Daṇḍadhāra.

उसे मारने के बाद, आप फिर से संशप्तकों को मार डालेंगे।" इन शब्दों को पूरा करने के बाद, उन्होंने पार्थ को दंडधर की ओर ले जाया।

The foremost among Māgadha-s was foremost in wielding the goad, just as the brilliant planet is foremost among planets. He was fiercely destroying the enemy soldiers, like a brilliant planet destroying the earth.

मगधों में सबसे आगे अंकुश रखने में सबसे आगे था, जैसे ग्रहों में प्रतिभाशाली ग्रह सबसे आगे है। वह शत्रु सैनिकों का भयंकर विनाश कर रहा था, जैसे कोई तेजस्वी ग्रह पृथ्वी को नष्ट कर देता है।

सुकल्पितं दानवनागसंनिभं; महाभ्रसंह्रादममित्रमर्दनम् रथाश्वमातङ्गगणान्सहस्रशः; समास्थितो हन्ति शरैर्द्विपानपि

His elephant was the crusher of enemy soldiers and was like an elephant of the dānava-s. It had been prepared well and it roared like a giant cloud. He killed thousands of rāṭha-s, horses and large numbers of elephants with his arrows.

उनका हाथी शत्रु सैनिकों को कुचलने वाला और दानवों के हाथी के समान था। यह अच्छी तरह से तैयार किया गया था और यह एक विशाल बादल की तरह गर्जना कर रहा था। उसने अपने बाणों से हजारों रथियों, घोड़ों और बड़ी संख्या में हाथियों को मार डाला।

रथानधिष्ठाय सवाजिसारथी;न्रथांश्च पद्भिस्त्वरितो व्यपोथयत् द्विपांश्च पद्भ्यां चरणैः करेण च; द्विपास्थितो हन्ति स कालचक्रवत्

The elephant also stood on chariots and quickly crushed horses, charioteers, rāṭha-s and foot soldiers. With its front legs and its trunk, it killed elephants, like a wheel of death.

हाथी भी रथों पर खड़ा हो गया और तेजी से घोड़ों, सारथियों, रथ-सैनिकों और पैदल सैनिकों को कुचल दिया। वह मृत्यु के पहिये की भाँति अपने अगले पैरों और सूंड से हाथियों को मार डालता था।

नरांश्च कार्ष्णायसवर्मभूषणा;न्निपात्य साश्वानपि पत्तिभिः सह व्यपोथयद्दन्तिवरेण शुष्मिणा; सशब्दवत्स्थूलनडान्यथा तथा

Men with armour made out of steel and adorned in ornaments were brought down, with their horses and foot soldiers. As those supreme ones were crushed and killed, a sound arose, like that of reeds being crushed by the wind.

स्टील से बने कवच और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित पुरुषों को उनके घोड़ों और पैदल सैनिकों के साथ नीचे लाया गया। जैसे ही उन श्रेष्ठ लोगों को कुचला गया और मार दिया गया, हवा से कुचले जाने वाले सरकंडों के समान एक ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई।

अथार्जुनो ज्यातलनेमिनिस्वने; मृदङ्गभेरीबहुशङ्खनादिते नराश्वमातङ्गसहस्रनादितै; रथोत्तमेनाभ्यपतद्द्विपोत्तमम्

There were the sounds of drums, kettledrums and many conch shells at the spot, mixed with the noise of bowstrings slapping against palms. There were the roars of thousands of men, horses and elephants.

उस स्थान पर ढोल, नगाड़ों और कई शंखों की आवाजें थीं, जो हथेलियों से टकराने वाली धनुष की डोरियों की आवाज के साथ मिश्रित थीं। हजारों मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों की दहाड़ें गूंज रही थीं।

ततोऽर्जुनं द्वादशभिः शरोत्तमै;र्जनार्दनं षोडशभिः समार्दयत् स दण्डधारस्तुरगांस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभि;स्ततो ननाद प्रजहास चासकृत्

On his supreme chariot, Arjuna advanced against that supreme of elephants. Daṇḍadhāra struck Arjuna with twelve supreme arrows, Janārdana with sixteen and each of the horses with three. He then roared and laughed.

अर्जुन अपने श्रेष्ठ रथ पर सवार होकर उस श्रेष्ठ हाथियों के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े। दण्डधर ने अर्जुन को बारह श्रेष्ठ बाणों से, जनार्दन को सोलह बाणों से और प्रत्येक घोड़े को तीन बाणों से घायल कर दिया। फिर वह दहाड़कर हंसा।

ततोऽस्य पार्थः सगुणेषुकार्मुकं; चकर्त भल्लैर्ध्वजमप्यलंकृतम् पुनर्नियन्तॄन्सह पादगोप्तृभि;स्ततस्तु चुक्रोध गिरिव्रजेश्वरः

At this, Pārtha used broad-headed arrows to slice off his bow, with the bowstring and arrows attached, and brought down his ornamented standard. He next struck those who were protecting his feet and this enraged the lord of Girivraja.

इस पर, पार्थ ने अपने धनुष को काटने के लिए चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों का उपयोग किया, जिसमें प्रत्यंचा और बाण लगे हुए थे, और उसके अलंकृत ध्वज को नीचे गिरा दिया। इसके बाद उसने उन लोगों पर प्रहार किया जो उसके पैरों की रक्षा कर रहे थे और इससे गिरिव्रज के स्वामी क्रोधित हो गए।

ततोऽर्जुनं भिन्नकटेन दन्तिना; घनाघनेनानिलतुल्यरंहसा अतीव चुक्षोभयिषुर्जनार्दनं; धनंजयं चाभिजघान तोमरैः

His tusker's temples were shattered and it was as dark as a mās-s of clouds. But it was also as swift as the wind and he wished to crush Arjuna with this. He shot arrows and hurled spears at Janārdana and Dhanañjayā.

उसके दाँतों की कनपटी टूट गयी थी और वहाँ बादलों के समूह जैसा अँधेरा था। लेकिन वह हवा के समान तेज़ भी था और वह इससे अर्जुन को कुचल देना चाहता था। उसने जनार्दन और धनंजय पर तीर चलाये और भाले फेंके।

अथास्य बाहू द्विपहस्तसंनिभौ; शिरश्च पूर्णेन्दुनिभाननं त्रिभिः क्षुरैः प्रचिच्छेद सहैव पाण्डव;स्ततो द्विपं बाणशतैः समार्दयत्

Pāṇḍava simultaneously shot three razor-sharp arrows and severed his two arms, which were like the trunks of elephants, and his head, which had the complexion of the full moon. He then struck the elephant with one hundred arrows.

पांडव ने एक साथ तीन तीक्ष्ण-तीक्ष्ण तीर चलाए और उनकी दोनों भुजाएं, जो हाथियों की सूंड जैसी थीं, और उनका सिर, जिसका रंग पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा के समान था, काट दिया। फिर उसने एक सौ बाणों से हाथी को घायल कर दिया।

स पार्थबाणैस्तपनीयभूषणैः; समारुचत्काञ्चनवर्मभृद्द्विपः तथा चकाशे निशि पर्वतो यथा; दवाग्निना प्रज्वलितौषधिद्रुमः

Pārtha's arrows were decorated with gold. They struck the elephant, which was clad in golden armour. It looked like a mountain in the night, when herbs and trees burn because of a fire.

पार्थ के बाण सोने से सुसज्जित थे। उन्होंने हाथी पर प्रहार किया, जो स्वर्ण कवच पहने हुए था। वह रात के समय किसी पर्वत के समान प्रतीत होता था, जब आग के कारण जड़ी-बूटियाँ और पेड़ जल रहे हों।

स वेदनार्तोऽम्बुदनिस्वनो नदं;श्चलन्भ्रमन्प्रस्खलितोऽऽतुरो द्रवन् पपात रुग्णः सनियन्तृकस्तथा; यथा गिरिर्वज्रनिपातचूर्णितः

Afflicted with pain, it roared like a cloud. It roamed aimlessly and then, with trembling steps, it tottered as it tried to run away. It was weakened and fell down, together with the driver. It was as if a mountain had been shattered by thunder and had fallen down.

वह पीड़ा से पीड़ित होकर बादल के समान गर्जना करने लगा। वह लक्ष्यहीन होकर घूमता रहा और फिर कांपते कदमों के साथ भागने की कोशिश करते हुए लड़खड़ा गया। वह कमजोर हो गया और ड्राइवर सहित नीचे गिर गया। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों कोई पहाड़ वज्रपात से टूटकर नीचे गिर गया हो।

हिमावदातेन सुवर्णमालिना; हिमाद्रिकूटप्रतिमेन दन्तिना हते रणे भ्रातरि दण्ड आव्रज;ज्जिघांसुरिन्द्रावरजं धनंजयम्

When his brother was killed in the battle, Daṇḍa advanced, wishing to kill Indra's younger brother and Dhanañjayā. He was astride a tusker that possessed the complexion of snow and was garlanded in gold. It looked like a summit of the Himālaya-s.

जब उसका भाई युद्ध में मारा गया, तो दण्ड इंद्र के छोटे भाई और धनंजय को मारने की इच्छा से आगे बढ़ा। वह एक हाथी पर सवार था जिसका रंग बर्फ जैसा था और उसने सोने की माला पहन रखी थी। यह हिमालय के शिखर जैसा लग रहा था।

स तोमरैरर्ककरप्रभैस्त्रिभि;र्जनार्दनं पञ्चभिरेव चार्जुनम् समर्पयित्वा विननाद चार्दयं;स्ततोऽस्य बाहू विचकर्त पाण्डवः

He hurled three lances that were as bright as the rays of the sun towards Janārdana and five towards Arjuna. Having struck them, he roared. Pāṇḍava severed his arms.

उन्होंने सूर्य की किरणों के समान तेजस्वी तीन भाले जनार्दन की ओर और पाँच अर्जुन की ओर फेंके। उन पर प्रहार करके वह दहाड़ उठा। पांडव ने उसकी भुजाएं काट दीं।

क्षुरप्रकृत्तौ सुभृशं सतोमरौ; च्युताङ्गदौ चन्दनरूषितौ भुजौ गजात्पतन्तौ युगपद्विरेजतु;र्यथाद्रिशृङ्गात्पतितौ महोरगौ

He used extremely fierce kṣurapra arrows, while they still held lances, were adorned with armlets and were smeared with sandalwood paste. They simultaneously fell down from the elephant's back and looked as beautiful as two serpents that had fallen off a mountain's peak.

उन्होंने अत्यंत भयंकर क्षुरप्र बाणों का उपयोग किया, जबकि वे अभी भी भाले धारण करते थे, बाजूबंद से सुशोभित थे और चंदन के लेप से सने हुए थे। वे एक साथ हाथी की पीठ से नीचे गिरे और पर्वत की चोटी से गिरे हुए दो साँपों के समान सुन्दर लग रहे थे।

अथार्धचन्द्रेण हृतं किरीटिना; पपात दण्डस्य शिरः क्षितिं द्विपात् तच्छोणिताभं निपतद्विरेजे; दिवाकरोऽस्तादिव पश्चिमां दिशम्

With an arrow that was in the shape of a half-moon, Kirīṭī severed Daṇḍa's head and it fell down from the elephant onto the ground. It was covered with blood and looked beautiful as it fell down, like the sun setting in the western direction.

अर्धचन्द्राकार बाण से किरीटी ने दण्ड का सिर काट दिया और वह हाथी से जमीन पर गिर पड़ा। वह खून से लथपथ था और नीचे गिरते हुए बहुत सुंदर लग रहा था, जैसे पश्चिम दिशा में डूबता हुआ सूरज हो।

अथ द्विपं श्वेतनगाग्रसंनिभं; दिवाकरांशुप्रतिमैः शरोत्तमैः बिभेद पार्थः स पपात नानद;न्हिमाद्रिकूटः कुलिशाहतो यथा

The supreme elephant possessed a white complexion and Pārtha pierced it with supreme arrows that blazed like the rays of the sun. It shrieked as it fell down, as if the summit of a mountain had been struck down by thunder.

श्रेष्ठ हाथी का वर्ण श्वेत था और पार्थ ने सूर्य की किरणों के समान चमकने वाले श्रेष्ठ बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया। नीचे गिरते ही वह ऐसे चिल्लाया, मानो पहाड़ की चोटी वज्र से टूट कर गिर पड़ी हो।

ततोऽपरे तत्प्रतिमा गजोत्तमा; जिगीषवः संयति सव्यसाचिनम् तथा कृतास्तेन यथैव तौ द्विपौ; ततः प्रभग्नं सुमहद्रिपोर्बलम्

There were other supreme elephants that were their equals and wished to obtain victory. Like those two elephants, Savyasachi carefully brought them down and that extremely large army of elephants was routed.

अन्य श्रेष्ठ हाथी भी थे जो उनके समकक्ष थे और विजय प्राप्त करना चाहते थे। सव्यसाची ने उन दो हाथियों की तरह उन्हें भी सावधानी से नीचे गिरा दिया और हाथियों की वह अत्यंत बड़ी सेना धराशायी हो गयी।

गजा रथाश्वाः पुरुषाश्च संघशः; परस्परघ्नाः परिपेतुराहवे परस्परप्रस्खलिताः समाहता; भृशं च तत्तत्कुलभाषिणो हताः

Elephants, chariots, horses and large numbers of men dashed against each other and fell down in that battle. They were wounded and struck each other. They anxiously lamented and were killed.

उस युद्ध में हाथी, रथ, घोड़े और बड़ी संख्या में लोग एक-दूसरे से टकराकर गिर पड़े। वे घायल हो गए और एक दूसरे पर प्रहार किया। उन्होंने व्यग्रतापूर्वक विलाप किया और मारे गये।

अथार्जुनं स्वे परिवार्य सैनिकाः; पुरंदरं देवगणा इवाब्रुवन् अभैष्म यस्मान्मरणादिव प्रजाः; स वीर दिष्ट्या निहतस्त्वया रिपुः

Arjuna was then surrounded by his own soldiers, like Purandara by the masses of gods. They said, "O brave one! We were frightened of the enemy, who seemed to us to be like Death before beings. It is good fortune that you have killed him.

तब अर्जुन अपने ही सैनिकों से घिरा हुआ था, जैसे पुरंदर देवताओं की भीड़ से घिरा हुआ था। उन्होंने कहा, "हे वीर! हम शत्रु से भयभीत थे, जो हमें प्राणियों के सामने मृत्यु के समान प्रतीत होता था। यह सौभाग्य है कि तुमने उसे मार डाला।"

न चेत्परित्रास्य इमाञ्जनान्भया;द्द्विषद्भिरेवं बलिभिः प्रपीडितान् तथाभविष्यद्द्विषतां प्रमोदनं; यथा हतेष्वेष्विह नोऽरिषु त्वया

We were immersed in terror and had you not rescued us, we would have been afflicted by the forces of the enemy. The enemy would have rejoiced. You have killed the enemy and we are now rejoicing."

हम आतंक में डूबे हुए थे और यदि आपने हमें न बचाया होता तो हम शत्रु सेना से पीड़ित हो गये होते। दुश्मन खुश हो गया होगा. आपने दुश्मन को मार डाला है और हम अब खुशी मना रहे हैं।”

इतीव भूयश्च सुहृद्भिरीरिता; निशम्य वाचः सुमनास्ततोऽर्जुनः यथानुरूपं प्रतिपूज्य तं जनं; जगाम संशप्तकसंघहा पुनः

Hearing these and many other conciliatory words spoken by his well-wishers, Arjuna was delighted in his mind. He then honoured the men, in accordance with what they deserved, and again headed towards the mās-s of saṃśaptaka-s.

अपने शुभचिंतकों द्वारा कही गई ये तथा अन्य अनेक सांत्वनापूर्ण बातें सुनकर अर्जुन मन ही मन प्रसन्न हुआ। फिर उन्होंने उन लोगों का सम्मान किया, जिनके वे हकदार थे, और फिर से संशप्तकों के मास की ओर बढ़ गए।
