Sañjaya said: Having heard the angry words spoken about Adhiratha's great-souled son by the king who followed dharma, the unassailable Jiṣṇu, whose valour was infinite and whose spirit was never depressed, spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira.
संजय ने कहा: धर्म का पालन करने वाले राजा द्वारा अधिरथ के महान आत्मा वाले पुत्र के बारे में कहे गए क्रोधपूर्ण शब्दों को सुनकर, अजेय जिष्णु, जिनकी वीरता अनंत थी और जिनकी आत्मा कभी निराश नहीं होती थी, उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर से ये शब्द कहे।
"O king! When I fought with the saṃśaptaka-s today, Droṇa's son suddenly stationed himself in front of me and at the forefront of the Kuru soldiers. He released arrows that were like venomous serpents.
"हे राजन! आज जब मैं संशप्तकों से युद्ध कर रहा था, तब द्रोण का पुत्र अचानक मेरे सामने और कुरु सैनिकों में सबसे आगे खड़ा हो गया। उसने विषैले साँपों के समान बाण छोड़े।
On seeing my chariot, which was like a cloud, the soldiers from Ambaṣṭha were ready to die. O foremost among kings! I killed five hundred of those and advanced against Droṇa's son.
मेघ के समान मेरे रथ को देखकर अम्बष्ठ के सैनिक मरने को तैयार हो गये। हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! मैंने उनमें से पाँच सौ को मार डाला और द्रोण के पुत्र के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा।
He stretched his bow back all the way up to his ears and aimed many arrows. He possessed the strength of learning and weapons and showered down, like a dark cloud.
उसने अपना धनुष पीछे कानों तक बढ़ाया और कई बाण मारे। उसके पास विद्या और शस्त्रों की शक्ति थी और वह काले बादल की भाँति बरस पड़ता था।

नैवाददानं न च संदधानं; जानीमहे कतरेणास्यतीति
वामेन वा यदि वा दक्षिणेन; स द्रोणपुत्रः समरे पर्यवर्तत्
In the battle, I could not distinguish between his affixing an arrow and releasing it. Droṇa's son circled around in that battle, sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right.
युद्ध में मैं उसके बाण लगाने और छोड़ने में भेद नहीं कर सका। उस युद्ध में द्रोणपुत्र कभी बायीं ओर और कभी दायीं ओर चक्कर लगाते रहते थे।
Droṇa's son pierced me with five sharp arrows and Vāsudeva with another five. In an instant, and without any gap, I struck him with thirty arrows that were like the vajra.
द्रोणपुत्र ने पाँच और वासुदेव ने पाँच तीखे बाणों से मुझे घायल कर दिया। मैंने एक क्षण में और बिना किसी अंतराल के वज्र के समान तीस बाणों से उस पर प्रहार कर दिया।

स विक्षरन्रुधिरं सर्वगात्रै; रथानीकं सूतसूनोर्विवेश
मयाभिभूतः सैनिकानां प्रबर्हा;नसावपश्यन्रुधिरेण प्रदिग्धान्
Blood began to flow from all over his body. Those soldiers had been overcome by me and their bodies were overflowing with blood. On seeing this, he entered the array of chariots that belonged to the son of a sūta.
उसके पूरे शरीर से खून बहने लगा। उन सैनिकों पर मैंने काबू पा लिया था और उनके शरीर खून से लथपथ थे। यह देखकर वह सूतपुत्र के रथों की कतार में घुस गया।
The warriors were overcome and the soldiers were devastated. Warriors, horses and elephants were running away. On seeing this, Karṇa swiftly dispatched fifty supreme rāṭha-s against me.
योद्धा परास्त हो गये और सैनिक तबाह हो गये। योद्धा, घोड़े और हाथी भाग रहे थे। यह देखकर कर्ण ने तेजी से मेरे विरुद्ध पचास श्रेष्ठ रथ भेजे।
After having killed them and avoided Karṇa, I have quickly come here to see you. On seeing Karṇa, all the Pāñcāla-s are filled with fright and are like cattle driven away by a lion.
उन्हें मारकर और कर्ण से बचकर मैं शीघ्र ही आपके दर्शन के लिए यहाँ आया हूँ। कर्ण को देखकर सभी पंचाल भयभीत हो गये और सिंह द्वारा खदेड़े गये मवेशियों के समान हो गये।
The Prabhadraka-s are being driven away by Karṇa, as if they have entered the mouth of a large fish. O king! Having clashed against Karṇa, the Prabhadraka-s are like those who have entered Death's gaping mouth.
प्रभद्रकों को कर्ण ऐसे भगा रहे हैं, मानो वे किसी बड़ी मछली के मुँह में घुस गये हों। हे राजा! कर्ण के विरुद्ध संघर्ष करने के बाद, प्रभद्रक-उन लोगों के समान हैं जो मृत्यु के खुले मुँह में प्रवेश कर गए हैं।

आयाहि पश्याद्य युयुत्समानं; मां सूतपुत्रं च वृतौ जयाय
षट्साहस्रा भारत राजपुत्राः; स्वर्गाय लोकाय रथा निमग्नाः
Come and see me and the son of a sūta fight, striving for victory. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Desiring heaven and the worlds, six thousand princes and rāṭha-s have immersed themselves.
आओ और मुझे और सूतपुत्र को विजय के लिए प्रयत्न करते हुए युद्ध करते हुए देखो। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! स्वर्ग और लोक की इच्छा करते हुए, छह हजार राजकुमारों और रथियों ने खुद को डुबो दिया है।

समेत्याहं सूतपुत्रेण संख्ये; वृत्रेण वज्रीव नरेन्द्रमुख्य
योत्स्ये भृशं भारत सूतपुत्र;मस्मिन्संग्रामे यदि वै दृश्यतेऽद्य
O foremost among kings! I will engage with the son of a sūta in battle, like the wielder of the vajra against Vṛtra. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! If you wish to see it, there will be a fierce battle today between me and the son of a sūta.
हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! मैं सूतपुत्र के साथ युद्ध में लड़ूंगा, जैसे वज्रधारी वृत्र के विरुद्ध। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यदि तुम इसे देखना चाहते हो तो आज मेरे और सूतपुत्र के बीच भयंकर युद्ध होगा।
O king! I will engage in a battle with Karṇa and kill him today, together with his relatives. O lion among men! There are ends meant for those who make a pledge and do not keep it. If I fail, let that end be mine.
हे राजा! मैं कर्ण के साथ युद्ध करके आज ही उसके सम्बन्धियों सहित उसका वध कर दूँगा। हे मनुष्यों में सिंह! कुछ लक्ष्य उन लोगों के लिए हैं जो प्रतिज्ञा करते हैं और उसे पूरा नहीं करते। यदि मैं असफल हो जाऊं तो वह अंत मेरा हो।

आमन्त्रये त्वां ब्रूहि जयं रणे मे; पुरा भीमं धार्तराष्ट्रा ग्रसन्ते
सौतिं हनिष्यामि नरेन्द्रसिंह; सैन्यं तथा शत्रुगणांश्च सर्वान्
I am inviting you. Tell me that victory in the battle will be mine. In front of us, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are about to devour Bhīmā. O lion among kings! I will slay the son of a sūta today, together with all the large numbers of enemy soldiers.
मैं तुम्हें आमंत्रित कर रहा हूँ. कहो युद्ध में विजय मेरी ही होगी। हमारे सामने धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र भीम को भस्म करने वाले हैं। हे राजाओं में सिंह! मैं आज समस्त शत्रु सैनिकों सहित सूतपुत्र को मार डालूँगा।
