संजय उवाच तद्देवनागासुरसिद्धसंघै;र्गन्धर्वयक्षाप्सरसां च संघैः ब्रह्मर्षिराजर्षिसुपर्णजुष्टं; बभौ वियद्विस्मयनीयरूपम्

Sañjaya said: With nāga-s, āsura-s, large numbers of siddha-s, gāndharva-s, yakṣa-s, large numbers of āpsara-s, brahmarṣi-s, rājarṣi-s and groups of birds, the sky was beautiful in form.

संजय ने कहा: नागों, असुरों, बड़ी संख्या में सिद्धों, गंधर्वों, यक्षों, बड़ी संख्या में अप्सराओं, ब्रह्मर्षियों, राजर्षियों और पक्षियों के समूहों के साथ, आकाश सुंदर रूप में था।

नानद्यमानं निनदैर्मनोज्ञै;र्वादित्रगीतस्तुतिभिश्च नृत्तैः सर्वेऽन्तरिक्षे ददृशुर्मनुष्याः; खस्थांश्च तान्विस्मयनीयरूपान्

There were pleasant sounds of musical instruments. There were sounds of praise. There was singing and dancing. All those in the sky, and men, were spectators. The sky assumed a beautiful form.

वाद्ययंत्रों की मधुर ध्वनियाँ थीं। प्रशंसा के स्वर गूंज रहे थे. नाच-गाना चल रहा था. आकाश में मौजूद सभी लोग और मनुष्य दर्शक थे। आकाश ने सुन्दर रूप धारण कर लिया।

ततः प्रहृष्टाः कुरुपाण्डुयोधा; वादित्रपत्रायुधसिंहनादैः निनादयन्तो वसुधां दिशश्च; स्वनेन सर्वे द्विषतो निजघ्नुः

Cheerfully, the warriors on the Kuru and Pāṇḍava sides made the earth and the directions resound with their musical instruments, the sounds of arrows and weapons and leonine roars. With that sound, they began to slaughter their enemies.

प्रसन्नतापूर्वक, कुरु और पांडव पक्ष के योद्धाओं ने अपने संगीत वाद्ययंत्रों, तीरों और हथियारों की आवाज़ और सिंहनी गर्जना से पृथ्वी और दिशाओं को गुंजायमान कर दिया। उस ध्वनि के साथ वे अपने शत्रुओं का संहार करने लगे।

नानाश्वमातङ्गरथायुताकुलं; वरासिशक्त्यृष्टिनिपातदुःसहम् अभीरुजुष्टं हतदेहसंकुलं; रणाजिरं लोहितरक्तमाबभौ

The field of battle had many horses, elephants and chariots and it was extremely difficult to withstand, because of the descent of supreme swords, javelins and scimitars. As they attacked, bodies were slain and it was red and beautiful because of the blood.

युद्ध के मैदान में कई घोड़े, हाथी और रथ थे और सर्वोच्च तलवारों, भाले और कैंची के आने के कारण उनका सामना करना बेहद मुश्किल था। जैसे ही उन्होंने हमला किया, शव मारे गए और खून के कारण वह लाल और सुंदर हो गया।

तथा प्रवृत्तेऽस्त्रभृतां पराभवे; धनंजयश्चाधिरथिश्च सायकैः दिशश्च सैन्यं च शितैरजिह्मगैः; परस्परं प्रोर्णुवतुः स्म दंशितौ

As the battle commenced, Dhanañjayā and Adhiratha's son, supreme among wielders of weapons, used their sharp and swift arrows against the soldiers in all directions. They were armoured and showered these towards each other.

जैसे ही युद्ध शुरू हुआ, धनञ्जय और अधिरथ के पुत्र, जो शस्त्रधारियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ थे, ने सभी दिशाओं में सैनिकों के विरुद्ध अपने तीखे और तीव्र बाणों का प्रयोग किया। वे बख्तरबंद थे और एक-दूसरे की ओर इन्हें बरसाते थे।

Because of the darkness that was created by the arrows, those on one's own side could not be distinguished from that of the enemy. Since they were terrified, they sought refuge with those two rāṭha-s, who were like the extending rays of the sun at the end of darkness.

बाणों से उत्पन्न अँधेरे के कारण अपनी ओर के बाणों को शत्रु से अलग नहीं किया जा सकता था। चूँकि वे भयभीत थे, इसलिए उन्होंने उन दो रथ-रों की शरण ली, जो अंधेरे के अंत में सूर्य की विस्तारित किरणों की तरह थे।

ततोऽस्त्रमस्त्रेण परस्परस्य तौ; विधूय वाताविव पूर्वपश्चिमौ घनान्धकारे वितते तमोनुदौ; यथोदितौ तद्वदतीव रेजतुः

Those two countered each other's weapons with their own, like the east wind clashing against the west wind. They were as radiant as two suns, dispelling the thick darkness after the sun has arisen.

उन दोनों ने एक-दूसरे के हथियारों का अपने-अपने हथियारों से मुकाबला किया, जैसे पूर्वी हवा पश्चिमी हवा से टकरा रही हो। वे दो सूर्यों के समान दीप्तिमान थे, जो सूर्य उदय के बाद घने अंधकार को दूर कर देते थे।

न चाभिमन्तव्यमिति प्रचोदिताः; परे त्वदीयाश्च तदावतस्थिरे महारथौ तौ परिवार्य सर्वतः; सुरासुरा वासवशम्बराविव

Each encouraged those on his side to take a stand against the enemy. The two mahāratha-s were surrounded in every direction, like the gods and the āsura-s around Vāsava and Śambara.

प्रत्येक ने अपने पक्ष के लोगों को शत्रु के विरुद्ध खड़े होने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। दोनों महारथ हर दिशा से घिरे हुए थे, जैसे देवता और असुर वासव और शंबर के आसपास थे।

मृदङ्गभेरीपणवानकस्वनै;र्निनादिते भारत शङ्खनिस्वनैः ससिंहनादौ बभतुर्नरोत्तमौ; शशाङ्कसूर्याविव मेघसंप्लवे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Drums, smaller drums and battle drums were sounded. There was the blare of conch shells. This mingled with roars like lions. Those two supreme among men were dazzling, like the sun and the moon amidst a thick mās-s of clouds.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! ढोल, छोटे ढोल और युद्ध नगाड़े बजाए गए। शंखों की ध्वनि गूंज रही थी। यह सिंहों जैसी दहाड़ से युक्त हो गया। वे दोनों पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ, घने बादलों के बीच सूर्य और चंद्रमा के समान तेजस्वी थे।

महाधनुर्मण्डलमध्यगावुभौ; सुवर्चसौ बाणसहस्ररश्मिनौ दिधक्षमाणौ सचराचरं जग;द्युगास्तसूर्याविव दुःसहौ रणे

Both of them possessed large bows drawn into circles, like radiant solar discs, with thousands of arrows as the rays. They were extremely unassailable in battle and were like two suns that had arisen at the end of a yuga to destroy all mobile and immobile objects in the universe.

उन दोनों के पास वृत्ताकार बड़े-बड़े धनुष थे, जो दीप्तिमान सौर डिस्क के समान थे, जिनकी किरणों के समान हजारों बाण थे। वे युद्ध में बेहद अजेय थे और दो सूर्यों की तरह थे जो ब्रह्मांड में सभी मोबाइल और स्थिर वस्तुओं को नष्ट करने के लिए एक युग के अंत में उभरे थे।

उभावजेयावहितान्तकावुभौ; जिघांसतुस्तौ कृतिनौ परस्परम् महाहवे वीरवरौ समीयतु;र्यथेन्द्रजम्भाविव कर्णपाण्डवौ

They were both invincible and capable of destroying illwishers. They were accomplished and wished to kill each other. In the great battle, Karṇa and Pāṇḍava, supreme among brave ones, clashed, like Indra and Jambha.

वे दोनों अजेय थे और दुष्टों का नाश करने में सक्षम थे। वे निपुण थे और एक-दूसरे को मारना चाहते थे। महान युद्ध में कर्ण और पाण्डव, जो वीरों में श्रेष्ठ थे, इन्द्र और जम्भ की भाँति आपस में भिड़ गये।

ततो महास्त्राणि महाधनुर्धरौ; विमुञ्चमानाविषुभिर्भयानकैः नराश्वनागानमितौ निजघ्नतुः; परस्परं जघ्नतुरुत्तमेषुभिः

Those two great archers released great weapons and terrible arrows. As they sought to kill each other with supreme arrows, they slaughtered large numbers of men, horses and elephants.

उन दोनों महान धनुर्धरों ने महान् अस्त्र तथा भयानक बाण छोड़े। जैसे ही वे सर्वोच्च बाणों से एक-दूसरे को मारने की कोशिश कर रहे थे, उन्होंने बड़ी संख्या में पुरुषों, घोड़ों और हाथियों को मार डाला।

ततो विसस्रुः पुनरर्दिताः शरै;र्नरोत्तमाभ्यां कुरुपाण्डवाश्रयाः सनागपत्त्यश्वरथा दिशो गता;स्तथा यथा सिंहभयाद्वनौकसः

Terrified and afflicted again by those arrows, the Kuru-s and Pāṇḍava-s sought refuge with those two supreme among men. Elephants, foot soldiers, horses and chariots fled in various directions, like residents of a forest out of fear for a lion.

उन बाणों से पुनः भयभीत और पीड़ित होकर, कुरु-पांडवों ने उन दोनों श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों की शरण ली। हाथी, पैदल सैनिक, घोड़े और रथ सिंह के डर से जंगल के निवासियों की तरह विभिन्न दिशाओं में भाग गए।

ततस्तु दुर्योधनभोजसौबलाः; कृपश्च शारद्वतसूनुना सह महारथाः पञ्च धनंजयाच्युतौ; शरैः शरीरान्तकरैरताडयन्

Duryodhana, Bhojā, Saubala, Kṛpa and Śāradvata's son— these five mahāratha-s attacked Dhanañjayā and Acyuta with arrows that could destroy the body.

दुर्योधन, भोज, सौबल, कृप और शरद्वात के पुत्र - इन पांच महारथों ने धनंजय और अच्युत पर उन बाणों से हमला किया जो शरीर को नष्ट कर सकते थे।

धनूंषि तेषामिषुधीन्हयान्ध्वजा;न्रथांश्च सूतांश्च धनंजयः शरैः समं च चिच्छेद पराभिनच्च ता;ञ्शरोत्तमैर्द्वादशभिश्च सूतजम्

Dhanañjayā used his arrows to destroy their bows, arrows, horses, standards, chariots and charioteers. Having countered and defeated them, he struck the son of a sūta with twelve supreme arrows.

धनंजय ने अपने बाणों से उनके धनुष, बाण, घोड़े, ध्वज, रथ और सारथियों को नष्ट कर दिया। उनका मुकाबला करके उन्हें परास्त करने के बाद उसने बारह श्रेष्ठ बाणों से सूतपुत्र को घायल कर दिया।

अथाभ्यधावंस्त्वरिताः शतं रथाः; शतं च नागार्जुनमाततायिनः शकास्तुखारा यवनाश्च सादिनः; सहैव काम्बोजवरैर्जिघांसवः

At this, one hundred chariots, one hundred elephants, riders from Śāka-s, Tukhāra-s and Yāvana-s and the best of Kāmboja-s attacked Arjuna, desiring to kill him.

इस पर, एक सौ रथ, एक सौ हाथी, शक, तुखार और यवन के सवार और काम्बोज के सर्वश्रेष्ठ लोगों ने अर्जुन पर हमला किया, उसे मारने की इच्छा से।

However, Dhanañjayā used razor-sharp arrows to swiftly sever the supreme weapons in their hands, heads, horses, elephants and chariots of the large numbers of the enemy who were fighting against him.

The assembled gods in the sky were delighted and applauded by sounding their trumpets. Showers of beautiful and fragrant flowers were rained down. Auspicious winds began to blow.

आकाश में इकट्ठे हुए देवता प्रसन्न हुए और अपनी तुरही बजाकर तालियाँ बजाईं। सुन्दर एवं सुगन्धित पुष्पों की वर्षा होने लगी। शुभ हवाएँ चलने लगीं।

तदद्भुतं देवमनुष्यसाक्षिकं; समीक्ष्य भूतानि विसिष्मियुर्नृप तवात्मजः सूतसुतश्च न व्यथां; न विस्मयं जग्मतुरेकनिश्चयौ

O king! Gods, men and beings who witnessed that wonderful sight were amazed. However, your son and the son of a sūta certainly felt neither pain, nor wonder.

हे राजा! देवता, मनुष्य और प्राणी जिन्होंने वह अद्भुत दृश्य देखा, आश्चर्यचकित रह गये। हालाँकि, आपके पुत्र और सूत के पुत्र को निश्चित रूप से न तो दर्द हुआ, न ही आश्चर्य हुआ।

अथाब्रवीद्द्रोणसुतस्तवात्मजं; करं करेण प्रतिपीड्य सान्त्वयन् प्रसीद दुर्योधन शाम्य पाण्डवै;रलं विरोधेन धिगस्तु विग्रहम्

Droṇa's son grasped your son's hand in his own hand and comforted him. He said, "O Duryodhana! Be pacified. Make peace with the Pāṇḍava-s. There is no need for dissension. Shame on war.

द्रोणपुत्र ने आपके पुत्र का हाथ अपने हाथ में पकड़कर उसे सांत्वना दी। उन्होंने कहा, "हे दुर्योधन! शांत हो जाओ। पांडवों के साथ शांति बना लो। मतभेद की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है। युद्ध को शर्म आनी चाहिए।"

हतो गुरुर्ब्रह्मसमो महास्त्रवि;त्तथैव भीष्मप्रमुखा नरर्षभाः अहं त्ववध्यो मम चापि मातुलः; प्रशाधि राज्यं सह पाण्डवैश्चिरम्

Your preceptor was Brahmā's equal and knew about great weapons. He has been killed and so have bulls among men, with Bhīṣma as the foremost. I cannot be killed and neither can my maternal uncle. Together with the Pāṇḍava-s, enjoy the kingdom for a long time.

आपके गुरु ब्रह्मा के तुल्य थे और बड़े-बड़े अस्त्र-शस्त्रों के ज्ञाता थे। वह मारा गया है और मनुष्यों में बैल भी मारे गए हैं, जिसमें भीष्म सबसे प्रमुख हैं। मुझे नहीं मारा जा सकता और न ही मेरे मामा को. पांडवों के साथ मिलकर लंबे समय तक राज्य का आनंद लें।

धनंजयः स्थास्यति वारितो मया; जनार्दनो नैव विरोधमिच्छति युधिष्ठिरो भूतहिते सदा रतो; वृकोदरस्तद्वशगस्तथा यमौ

Restrained by me, Dhanañjayā will withdraw. Janārdana does not desire a conflict either. Yudhiṣṭhira is always engaged in the welfare of beings. Vṛkodara is obedient to him and so are the twins.

मेरे द्वारा रोका गया, धनंजय पीछे हट जाएगा। जनार्दन भी संघर्ष नहीं चाहते. युधिष्ठिर सदैव प्राणियों के कल्याण में लगे रहते हैं। वृकोदर उसके आज्ञाकारी हैं और जुड़वाँ बच्चे भी उनके आज्ञाकारी हैं।

त्वया च पार्थैश्च परस्परेण; प्रजाः शिवं प्राप्नुयुरिच्छति त्वयि व्रजन्तु शेषाः स्वपुराणि पार्थिवा; निवृत्तवैराश्च भवन्तु सैनिकाः

If there is peace between you and Pārtha, all the subjects will be fortunate and that seems to be your desire too. Let the remaining kings return to their own cities. Let the soldiers refrain from hostilities.

यदि आपके और पार्थ के बीच शांति रहेगी तो सारी प्रजा का कल्याण होगा और यही आपकी इच्छा भी प्रतीत होती है। बचे हुए राजाओं को अपने नगरों को लौट जाने दो। सैनिकों को शत्रुता से दूर रहने दें।

न चेद्वचः श्रोष्यसि मे नराधिप; ध्रुवं प्रतप्तासि हतोऽरिभिर्युधि इदं च दृष्टं जगता सह त्वया; कृतं यदेकेन किरीटमालिना यथा न कुर्याद्बलभिन्न चान्तको; न च प्रचेता भगवान्न यक्षराट्

O lord of men! If you do not listen to my words, you are certain to be slain by the enemies in the battle and will repent. This universe, and you, has seen what the one with the diadem and the garland has single-handedly accomplished. This has not been accomplished by the destroyer of Bāla, Yāma, the illustrious Prācetas and the king of the yakṣa-s.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! यदि तुम मेरी बातें नहीं सुनोगे तो निश्चय ही युद्ध में शत्रुओं द्वारा मारे जाओगे और पश्चाताप करोगे। इस ब्रह्माण्ड ने, और आपने, देखा है कि मुकुट और माला वाले ने अकेले ही क्या-क्या किया है। यह बाला, यम, प्रतिष्ठित प्राचेतस और यक्ष-राजा के विनाशक द्वारा पूरा नहीं किया गया है।

अतोऽपि भूयांश्च गुणैर्धनंजयः; स चाभिपत्स्यत्यखिलं वचो मम तवानुयात्रां च तथा करिष्यति; प्रसीद राजञ्जगतः शमाय वै

There are many other qualities that Dhanañjayā possesses. He will not transgress my words. He will act so as to follow you. O king! For the benefit of the world, be pacified.

धनंजय के पास और भी कई गुण हैं। वह मेरे शब्दों का उल्लंघन नहीं करेगा. वह आपका अनुसरण करने के लिए कार्य करेगा। हे राजा! संसार के हित के लिए, शान्त हो जाओ।

ममापि मानः परमः सदा त्वयि; ब्रवीम्यतस्त्वां परमाच्च सौहृदात् निवारयिष्यामि हि कर्णमप्यहं; यदा भवान्सप्रणयो भविष्यति

You have always shown me great honour and I have reciprocated. I am your great well-wisher and that is the reason I am speaking these words. If you are inclined towards affection, I will restrain Karṇa too.

आपने हमेशा मुझे बहुत सम्मान दिया है और मैंने भी उसका प्रतिउत्तर दिया है। मैं आपका बहुत बड़ा शुभचिंतक हूं और इसीलिए ये बातें कह रहा हूं. यदि तुम स्नेह की ओर प्रवृत्त हो तो मैं कर्ण को भी रोक लूँगा।

वदन्ति मित्रं सहजं विचक्षणा;स्तथैव साम्ना च धनेन चार्जितम् प्रतापतश्चोपनतं चतुर्विधं; तदस्ति सर्वं त्वयि पाण्डवेषु च

Those who are learned say that there are four kinds of friends—those who are natural friends, those who are made such through conciliation, those who are earned through riches and those who are subjugated through power. Towards you, the Pāṇḍava-s are all four.

जो लोग विद्वान हैं वे कहते हैं कि चार प्रकार के मित्र होते हैं - वे जो स्वाभाविक मित्र होते हैं, वे जो मेल-मिलाप के माध्यम से बनाए जाते हैं, वे जो धन के माध्यम से कमाए जाते हैं और वे जो शक्ति के माध्यम से वश में किए जाते हैं। तुम्हारे प्रति तो पाण्डव चारों ही हैं।

निसर्गतस्ते तव वीर बान्धवाः; पुनश्च साम्ना च समाप्नुहि स्थिरम् त्वयि प्रसन्ने यदि मित्रतामियु;र्ध्रुवं नरेन्द्रेन्द्र तथा त्वमाचर

O brave one! They are naturally your relatives. Make them that through conciliation. O Indra among kings! If they are pacified and become friends towards you, it is certain that you should also act in that way.

हे वीर! वे स्वाभाविक रूप से आपके रिश्तेदार हैं। उन्हें सुलह-समझौते से वैसा बनाओ। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यदि उन्हें शांत कर दिया जाए और वे आपके प्रति मित्र बन जाएं तो यह निश्चित है कि आपको भी वैसा ही व्यवहार करना चाहिए।

स एवमुक्तः सुहृदा वचो हितं; विचिन्त्य निःश्वस्य च दुर्मनाब्रवीत् यथा भवानाह सखे तथैव त;न्ममापि च ज्ञापयतो वचः शृणु

Having heard the beneficial words spoken by his well-wisher, he thought for some time. He sighed and, distressed in his mind, replied, "O friend! It is as you have said. However, listen to the words that I will tell you.

अपने शुभचिंतक के कहे हुए हितकारी वचन सुनकर वह कुछ देर तक विचार करता रहा। उसने आह भरी और मन में व्यथित होकर उत्तर दिया, "हे मित्र! यह वैसा ही है जैसा तुमने कहा था। तथापि, जो शब्द मैं तुमसे कहूँगा उसे सुनो।"

निहत्य दुःशासनमुक्तवान्बहु; प्रसह्य शार्दूलवदेष दुर्मतिः वृकोदरस्तद्धृदये मम स्थितं; न तत्परोक्षं भवतः कुतः शमः

Vṛkodara is evil-minded. He slew Duḥśāsana like a tiger, and laughing, spoke many words. Those are still lodged in my heart. They were uttered in your presence. How can there be peace?

वृकोदर दुष्ट मानसिकता वाला है। उन्होंने बाघ की भाँति दुःशासन को मार डाला और हँसते हुए अनेक वचन बोले। वो आज भी मेरे दिल में बसे हुए हैं. वे आपकी उपस्थिति में बोले गए थे. शांति कैसे हो सकती है?

न चापि कर्णं गुरुपुत्र संस्तवा;दुपारमेत्यर्हसि वक्तुमच्युत श्रमेण युक्तो महताद्य फल्गुन;स्तमेष कर्णः प्रसभं हनिष्यति

O son of my preceptor! O unblemished one! You should not speak to Karṇa and try to restrain him. Phālguna is overcome by great exhaustion. Karṇa will kill him in a short while."

हे मेरे गुरु के पुत्र! हे निष्कलंक! आपको कर्ण से बात नहीं करनी चाहिए और उसे रोकने की कोशिश नहीं करनी चाहिए। फाल्गुन अत्यधिक थकावट से ग्रस्त है। कुछ ही देर में कर्ण उसे मार डालेगा।”

तमेवमुक्त्वाभ्यनुनीय चासकृ;त्तवात्मजः स्वाननुशास्ति सैनिकान् समाघ्नताभिद्रवताहितानिमा;न्सबाणशब्दान्किमु जोषमास्यते

Humbly and respectfully, your son repeatedly spoke these words and instructed his soldiers, "Attack and kill those who seek to injure us. Why is the sound of arrows not heard and why is everything quiet?"

आपके पुत्र ने नम्रतापूर्वक और सम्मानपूर्वक ये शब्द बार-बार कहे और अपने सैनिकों को निर्देश दिया, "हमला करो और उन लोगों को मार डालो जो हमें घायल करना चाहते हैं। तीरों की आवाज़ क्यों नहीं सुनी जाती है और सब कुछ शांत क्यों है?"
