Sañjaya said: In the course of the encounter between Karṇa and Arjuna, the soldiers had been mangled with arrows. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing this, Śalya went to Duryodhana, who was glancing at the field of battle.
संजय ने कहा: कर्ण और अर्जुन के बीच मुठभेड़ के दौरान, सैनिक तीरों से घायल हो गए थे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह देखकर शल्य दुर्योधन के पास गये, जो युद्ध भूमि की ओर देख रहा था।
Duryodhana saw that his army, with its chariots, horses and elephants, had been destroyed and the son of a sūta had been killed. His eyes filled with tears and in great distress, he sighed repeatedly.
दुर्योधन ने देखा कि उसकी सेना रथों, घोड़ों और हाथियों सहित नष्ट हो गई है और एक सूतपुत्र मारा गया है। उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भर गईं और बड़े कष्ट से वह बार-बार आहें भरता रहा।
The brave Karṇa had fallen down on the ground. His body had been mangled by arrows and blood flowed from it. It was as if the sun had fallen down from the sky. To see this, everyone came there and surrounded the body.
वीर कर्ण भूमि पर गिर पड़े थे। उनका शरीर बाणों से क्षत-विक्षत हो गया था और रक्त बह रहा था। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों सूरज आसमान से नीचे गिर गया हो। यह देखने के लिए सभी लोग वहां आ गए और शव को घेर लिया।
There were those who belonged to your side and others who belonged to the enemy. Some were cheerful. Others were frightened. Some were distressed. Others were amazed. There were others who were completely overcome by grief. According to their natural traits, they looked towards each other.
कुछ वे थे जो आपके पक्ष के थे और दूसरे वे जो शत्रु पक्ष के थे। कुछ प्रसन्नचित्त थे. अन्य लोग भयभीत थे। कुछ व्यथित थे. अन्य लोग आश्चर्यचकित थे. कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो दुःख से पूरी तरह उबर चुके थे। वे अपने स्वाभाविक गुणों के अनुसार एक-दूसरे की ओर देखते थे।

निशम्य कर्णं कुरवः प्रदुद्रुवु;र्हतर्षभा गाव इवाकुलाकुलाः
Karṇa had possessed armour, ornaments, garments and weapons. On seeing that he had been brought down by Dhanañjayā and deprived of his energy, the Kuru-s fled. They were like a distressed herd of cattle, when the bull has been killed.
कर्ण के पास कवच, आभूषण, वस्त्र और हथियार थे। यह देखकर कि उन्हें धनंजय ने नीचे गिरा दिया है और उनकी शक्ति छीन ली है, कुरु भाग गए। वे बैल के मारे जाने पर संकटग्रस्त मवेशियों के झुण्ड के समान थे।
By slaying Karṇa, like an elephant by a lion, Arjuna had struck them severely. On seeing that he was lying down on the ground, the king of Madra was terrified. He swiftly withdrew on his chariot.
जैसे सिंह द्वारा हाथी को मारा जाता है, वैसे ही अर्जुन ने कर्ण को मारकर उन पर भयंकर प्रहार किया था। यह देखकर कि वह भूमि पर पड़ा हुआ है, मद्र देश का राजा भयभीत हो गया। वह तेजी से अपने रथ पर सवार हो गया।
The lord of Madra was stupefied. He quickly departed on the chariot that was without a standard. He swiftly went to Duryodhana's side and spoke these sorrowful words.
मद्रराज स्तब्ध हो गये। वह शीघ्र ही बिना मानक के रथ पर बैठकर प्रस्थान कर गया। वह तेजी से दुर्योधन के पास गया और उसने ये दुःख भरे वचन कहे।
"The elephants, horses and best of rāṭha-s in your army have been destroyed. It looks like Yāma's kingdom. The large armies with men, horses and elephants that are like mountain tops have clashed against each other and have been killed.
"आपकी सेना के हाथी, घोड़े और सर्वश्रेष्ठ रथ नष्ट हो गए हैं। यह यम के राज्य जैसा दिखता है। पर्वत शिखर के समान पुरुषों, घोड़ों और हाथियों वाली बड़ी सेनाएं एक-दूसरे के खिलाफ भिड़ गई हैं और मारे गए हैं।

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There has never been a battle like that fought between Karṇa and Arjuna today. Karṇa clashed against the two Kṛṣṇās and others who are your enemies and has been devoured.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कर्ण और अर्जुन के बीच आज जैसा युद्ध कभी नहीं हुआ। कर्ण उन दो कृष्णों तथा अन्य लोगों से भिड़ा जो तुम्हारे शत्रु हैं और भस्म हो गये हैं।
Destiny flows according to its own rules. That is the reason it is protecting the Pāṇḍava-s and weakening us. All the brave ones sought to accomplish your objectives. They have been slain by the enemy.
नियति अपने नियमों के अनुसार बहती है। यही कारण है कि यह पांडवों की रक्षा कर रहा है और हमें कमजोर कर रहा है। सभी शूरवीर आपके उद्देश्यों को पूरा करने के लिये प्रयत्नशील थे। वे शत्रु द्वारा मारे गये हैं।
Those brave ones were the equals of Kubera, Vaivasvata and the lord of the waters in power. They possessed valour, bravery and strength. They possessed large stores of qualities.
वे वीर कुबेर, वैवस्वत और जल के स्वामी के समकक्ष थे। उनमें वीरता, शौर्य और शक्ति थी। उनके पास गुणों का विशाल भण्डार था।
Those Indra-s among men were unslayable. They sought to accomplish your objectives, fought against the Pāṇḍaveya-s and have been slain. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Do not grieve. This is destiny. There is no substitute for success. However, success cannot always be obtained."
मनुष्यों में वे इन्द्र अजेय थे। उन्होंने आपके उद्देश्यों को पूरा करने की कोशिश की, पांडवों के खिलाफ लड़ाई लड़ी और मारे गए। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! शोक मत करो. यही नियति है. सफलता का कोई विकल्प नहीं है. हालाँकि, सफलता हमेशा प्राप्त नहीं की जा सकती।"
Hearing the words of the lord of Madra, Duryodhana was miserable in his mind. He thought of his own evil deeds and looked within his heart. He was bereft of his senses. In great grief, he repeatedly sighed.
मद्रराज के वचन सुनकर दुर्योधन मन में दुःखी हुआ। उसने अपने बुरे कर्मों के बारे में सोचा और अपने हृदय में झाँका। वह अपनी इंद्रियों से वंचित हो गया था। बड़े दु:ख में वह बार-बार आहें भरता रहा।
He reflected and was silent. He was extremely distressed. Ārtāyani spoke these words to him. "O brave one! Behold this fierce field of battle. It is strewn around with slain men, horses and elephants.
उसने विचार किया और चुप रहा। वह अत्यंत व्यथित था। आर्तयानी ने उनसे ये शब्द कहे। "हे वीर! युद्ध के इस भयंकर क्षेत्र को देखो। यह चारों ओर मारे गए लोगों, घोड़ों और हाथियों से बिखरा हुआ है।
Giant elephants have fallen down, like giant mountains. They have been sliced down. Their inner organs have been pierced with arrows. They are unconscious and anxious. Some have lost their lives. The warriors have dislodged their body armour and their weapons.
विशाल पर्वतों के समान विशाल हाथी नीचे गिर पड़े हैं। उन्हें काट दिया गया है. उनके भीतरी अंग बाणों से बींध दिये गये हैं। वे बेहोश और चिंतित हैं. कइयों ने अपनी जान गंवाई है. योद्धाओं ने अपने शरीर के कवच और हथियारों को उखाड़ फेंका है।
They are like fragmented mountains, with rocks, animals, trees and herbs, which have been shattered by Indra's vajra. The bells, goads, javelins and standards have been destroyed. They possessed golden harnesses, which are streaming with copious quantities of blood.
वे चट्टानों, जानवरों, पेड़ों और जड़ी-बूटियों से युक्त खंडित पहाड़ों की तरह हैं, जो इंद्र के वज्र से टूट गए हैं। घंटियाँ, अंकुश, भाले और मानक नष्ट कर दिए गए हैं। उनके पास सुनहरे हार्नेस थे, जिनसे प्रचुर मात्रा में खून बह रहा था।
Mangled by arrows, horses have fallen down. Some of them are finding it difficult to breathe and are vomiting blood. Some are shrieking loudly, with dilated eyes. Some are biting the ground with their teeth and neighing in distress.
बाणों से घायल होकर घोड़े गिर पड़े हैं। उनमें से कुछ को सांस लेने में कठिनाई हो रही है और खून की उल्टियां हो रही हैं। कुछ लोग आँखें फैलाकर जोर-जोर से चिल्ला रहे हैं। कुछ लोग ज़मीन को दाँतों से काट रहे हैं और परेशान होकर हिनहिना रहे हैं।
Warriors on horses and elephants have been struck. Some have a little bit of life left and others have lost their lives. Men, horses, elephants and chariots have been crushed. Like the great Vaitaraṇī, the earth is difficult to behold.
घोड़ों और हाथियों पर सवार योद्धा मारे गए हैं। कुछ की थोड़ी सी जान बची है और कुछ की जान चली गई है. मनुष्य, घोड़े, हाथी और रथ कुचल दिये गये। महान वैतरणी की तरह, पृथ्वी को देखना कठिन है।
Elephants have had their trunks severed by the enemy. They are shrieking, trembling and falling down on the ground. There were illustrious elephants, chariots, horses, warriors and foot soldiers. Advancing against the enemy, they have been slain. Armour, ornaments, garments and weapons are strewn around. It is as if the earth is covered with many fires that have been extinguished.
शत्रु ने हाथियों की सूंड काट दी है। वे चिल्ला रहे हैं, कांप रहे हैं और जमीन पर गिर रहे हैं। वहाँ शानदार हाथी, रथ, घोड़े, योद्धा और पैदल सैनिक थे। शत्रु के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ते हुए वे मारे गये हैं। कवच, आभूषण, वस्त्र और हथियार चारों ओर बिखरे हुए हैं। यह ऐसा है मानो पृथ्वी बहुत सी बुझी हुई आग से ढकी हुई है।
One can see that the mighty armies have been struck by the force of the arrows and soldiers have fallen down in thousands. They have lost their senses and are trying to regain their breath again. The earth is beautiful, as if with fires that have been extinguished. Flaming and sparkling planets seem to have fallen down from the sky.
कोई देख सकता है कि बाणों के बल से शक्तिशाली सेनाएँ घायल हो गई हैं और हजारों की संख्या में सैनिक गिर पड़े हैं। वे अपनी चेतना खो चुके हैं और फिर से अपनी सांसें वापस पाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। पृथ्वी सुन्दर है, मानो बुझी हुई आग से। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है जैसे जलते और चमचमाते ग्रह आकाश से नीचे गिर गये हों।
The arrows, released from the arms of Karṇa and Arjuna, have shattered the bodies of elephants, horses and men. The weapons have quickly deprived them of their lives and have entered the ground, like giant serpents looking for an abode.
कर्ण और अर्जुन की भुजाओं से छूटे बाणों ने हाथियों, घोड़ों और मनुष्यों के शरीरों को छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया है। अस्त्र-शस्त्रों ने शीघ्रता से उनके प्राण छीन लिये हैं और भूमि में ऐसे घुस गये हैं, जैसे विशाल सर्प निवास की तलाश में हों।
In the battle, men, horses and elephants have been killed. Chariots have been shattered by the arrows. The earth has become impassable because of the bodies of elephants that have been killed by the arrows of Dhanañjayā and Adhiratha's son.
युद्ध में मनुष्य, घोड़े और हाथी मारे गये। बाणों से रथ चूर-चूर हो गये हैं। अधिरथ के पुत्र धन्नजय के बाणों से मारे गये हाथियों के शवों के कारण पृथ्वी अगम्य हो गयी है।
The best of rāṭha-s and warriors have been uprooted by the arrows. Chariots, horses, the best of weapons and standards are strewn around. It is impassable because of shattered and destroyed weapons. Wheels, axles, yokes and triveṇu-s have been shattered.
श्रेष्ठ रथ-योद्धाओं को बाणों द्वारा उखाड़ फेंका गया है। चारों ओर रथ, घोड़े, उत्तम अस्त्र-शस्त्र तथा ध्वज बिखरे पड़े हैं। टूटे-फूटे और नष्ट हो चुके हथियारों के कारण यह अगम्य है। पहिये, धुरियाँ, जुए और त्रिवेणु टूट गये हैं।
The chariots are without charioteers, who have been killed. It is impassable because some are without yokes, while others have had their yokes broken. The seats were decorated with gold and jewels and have been shattered. They are strewn around on the ground, like clouds in the autumn sky.
रथ सारथि विहीन हैं, जो मारे गये हैं। यह अगम्य है क्योंकि कुछ बिना जुए के हैं, जबकि अन्य के जुए टूट गए हैं। सीटें सोने और जवाहरातों से सजी हुई थीं और बिखर गई हैं। वे शरद ऋतु के आकाश में बादलों की तरह, जमीन पर इधर-उधर बिखरे हुए हैं।
The swift and ornamented horses were yoked to excellent chariots and with riders slain, are dragging them around. Large numbers of men, elephants, chariots and horses are seen to speedily run away. They have been routed in many ways.
वेगवान और अलंकृत घोड़े उत्कृष्ट रथों में जुते हुए थे और मारे गये सवारों के साथ उन्हें चारों ओर खींच रहे थे। बड़ी संख्या में मनुष्य, हाथी, रथ और घोड़े तेजी से भागते दिखाई देते हैं। उन्हें कई तरह से रूट किया गया है.
Clubs tied in golden cloth, battleaxes, swords, bludgeons, spears, sparkling and unsheathed scimitars, and maces tied up in golden pieces of cloth have fallen down.
सुनहरे कपड़े में बंधी हुई गदाएँ, कुल्हाड़ियाँ, तलवारें, डंडे, भाले, चमचमाती और बिना म्यान वाली तलवारें, और कपड़े के सुनहरे टुकड़ों में बंधी गदाएँ नीचे गिर गई हैं।
There are bows, golden armlets, ornaments, arrows with colourful tufts made out of gold, yellow and spotless swords that have been unsheathed, javelins and scimitars with golden complexions.
इसमें धनुष, सुनहरे बाजूबंद, आभूषण, सोने से बने रंग-बिरंगे गुच्छों वाले तीर, बिना म्यान वाली पीली और बेदाग तलवारें, सुनहरे रंग वाले भाले और कैंची हैं।
There are umbrellas, fans, whisks, conch shells and garlands of flowers, embellished with gold. There are housings, flags and garments. There are radiant crowns, garlands and diadems.
वहाँ सोने से अलंकृत छत्र, पंखे, शंख, शंख और फूलों की मालाएँ हैं। वहाँ आवास, झंडे और वस्त्र हैं। वहाँ दीप्तिमान मुकुट, मालाएँ और मुकुट हैं।
The housings are scattered and strewn around. There are necklaces decorated with pearls from the waters. There are guards, armlets and excellent bracelets. There are golden collars and golden threads for the necks.
आवास बिखरे हुए और बिखरे हुए हैं। जल के मोतियों से सजे हुए हार हैं। वहाँ रक्षक, बाजूबंद और उत्तम कंगन हैं। गले के लिए सुनहरे कॉलर और सुनहरे धागे हैं।
There are the best of gems, diamonds, gold, pearls and other jewels. There are auspicious signs, good and not that good, on the bodies, which have been reared in great happiness. The faces on the heads are like the full moon.
वहाँ सर्वोत्तम रत्न, हीरे, सोना, मोती और अन्य रत्न हैं। जिन शरीरों का पालन-पोषण बड़े सुख से हुआ है, उन पर शुभ भी शुभ लक्षण होते हैं और उतने अच्छे भी नहीं। मस्तक पर मुख पूर्ण चंद्रमा के समान हैं।
The bodies have given up pleasure and garments, objects desired by the heart and happiness. They have resorted to their own dharma and obtained great merits. They have ascended to the worlds that bring fame."
शरीरों ने सुख और वस्त्र, मन की इच्छित वस्तुएँ और सुख का त्याग कर दिया है। उन्होंने अपने धर्म का सहारा लिया और महान पुण्य प्राप्त किये। वे प्रसिद्धि लाने वाले लोकों में आरोहण कर चुके हैं।"

इत्येवमुक्त्वा विरराम शल्यो; दुर्योधनः शोकपरीतचेताः
हा कर्ण हा कर्ण इति ब्रुवाण; आर्तो विसंज्ञो भृशमश्रुनेत्रः
Śalya spoke these words to Duryodhana and stopped. His mind was overcome with great grief. Bereft of his senses, he lamented, "Āla-s! Karṇa! Āla-s! Karṇa!" His eyes overflowed with tears.
शल्य ने दुर्योधन से ये शब्द कहे और रुक गये। उसका मन बड़े दु:ख से भर गया। अपनी इंद्रियों से रहित होकर, उसने विलाप करते हुए कहा, "अल-स! कर्ण! अला-स! कर्ण!" उसकी आँखों से आँसू छलक पड़े।
All the kings, with Droṇa's son at the forefront, comforted him and departed. They repeatedly glanced at Arjuna's great standard, which seemed to be blazing because of his glory.
सभी राजाओं ने, जिनमें द्रोण का पुत्र सबसे आगे था, उन्हें सांत्वना दी और चले गये। वे बार-बार अर्जुन के उस महान ध्वज की ओर देखते थे, जो उसके तेज के कारण चमकता हुआ प्रतीत होता था।
The bodies of men, horses and elephants were covered with blood. The earth was covered with blood. It looked like a woman attired in crimson and golden garments and garlands, who would go to everyone.
मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों के शरीर खून से लथपथ थे। धरती खून से लथपथ हो गयी. वह लाल और सुनहरे वस्त्रों और मालाओं से सुसज्जित एक महिला की तरह लग रही थी, जो हर किसी के पास जाती थी।
O king! Their terrible forms were covered with blood and could not be recognized. The Kuru-s were unable to look at all those who had departed for the world of the gods and could not stand there.
हे राजा! उनके भयानक रूप खून से लथपथ हो गये थे और पहचाने न जा सके। कुरु उन सभी को देखने में असमर्थ थे जो देवताओं की दुनिया के लिए प्रस्थान कर चुके थे और वहां खड़े नहीं रह सकते थे।

वधेन कर्णस्य सुदुःखितास्ते; हा कर्ण हा कर्ण इति ब्रुवाणाः
द्रुतं प्रयाताः शिबिराणि राज;न्दिवाकरं रक्तमवेक्षमाणाः
Because Karṇa had been slain, they were extremely miserable. They lamented, "Āla-s! Karṇa! Āla-s! Karṇa!" On seeing that the sun had assumed a reddish tinge, they rapidly left for their camps.
चूँकि कर्ण मारा गया था, वे अत्यंत दुखी थे। उन्होंने विलाप किया, "अल-स! कर्ण! अला-स! कर्ण!" यह देखकर कि सूर्य ने लाल रंग धारण कर लिया है, वे तेजी से अपने शिविरों की ओर चले गए।
Gold-tufted and sharp arrows were released from Gāṇḍīva. Their tufts were smeared with blood. With those arrows on his limbs, Karṇa looked beautiful on the ground. Though slain, he looked like the sun, with its rays.
गाण्डीव से स्वर्णजटित एवं तीखे बाण छोड़े गये। उनके गुच्छे खून से सने हुए थे। अपने अंगों पर उन बाणों से कर्ण भूमि पर सुन्दर दिख रहा था। मारे जाने पर भी वह अपनी किरणों से सूर्य के समान दिख रहा था।
Karṇa's body was covered with blood. It was as if the illustrious sun was showing compassion towards its devotee and having touched the crimson form with its red hand, was proceeding beyond the ocean to have a bath.
कर्ण का शरीर रक्त से लथपथ था। ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था मानों तेजोमय सूर्य अपने भक्त पर दया कर रहा हो और अपने लाल हाथ से लाल रंग का स्पर्श कर स्नान करने के लिए सागर से आगे बढ़ रहा हो।

इतीव संचिन्त्य सुरर्षिसंघाः; संप्रस्थिता यान्ति यथानिकेतम्
संचिन्तयित्वा च जना विसस्रु;र्यथासुखं खं च महीतलं च
That is what the large numbers of gods and riṣi-s thought. They returned to their respective abodes. The other beings also thought in the same way and left as they wished, to heaven or on earth.
बड़ी संख्या में देवताओं और ऋषियों ने यही सोचा। वे अपने-अपने निवास स्थान पर लौट आये। अन्य प्राणियों ने भी ऐसा ही सोचा और अपनी इच्छानुसार स्वर्ग या पृथ्वी पर चले गये।
The foremost of brave ones among the Kuru-s had witnessed the terrible encounter between Dhanañjayā and Adhiratha's son, destructive of lives. They were amazed. Now that it was over, they praised it and departed.
कुरुवंशियों में अग्रणी वीरों ने धन्नजय और अधिरथ के पुत्र के बीच जीवन का विनाश करने वाली भयानक मुठभेड़ देखी थी। वे चकित थे. अब जब यह ख़त्म हो गया, तो उन्होंने इसकी प्रशंसा की और चले गए।
O king! He was adorned in many ornaments and his armlets were made out of gold. Vaikartaṇa had been slain and was lying down, like a tree with branches and sprouts.
हे राजा! वह अनेक आभूषणों से सुसज्जित था और उसके बाजूबंद सोने के बने थे। वैकर्तन मारा गया था और शाखाओं और अंकुरों वाले एक पेड़ की तरह पड़ा हुआ था।
He had the complexion of pure gold and blazed like a fire. With his son, the tiger among men was pacified by Pārtha's energy. O king! With his weapons and energy, he scorched the Pāṇḍava-s and the Pāñcāla-s.
उसका रंग शुद्ध सोने जैसा था और आग की तरह चमक रहा था। अपने बेटे के साथ, पुरुषों के बीच का बाघ पार्थ की ऊर्जा से शांत हो गया था। हे राजा! अपने हथियारों और शक्ति से उन्होंने पांडवों और पंचालों को झुलसा दिया।

ददानीत्येव योऽवोचन्न नास्तीत्यर्थितोऽर्थिभिः
सद्भिः सदा सत्पुरुषः स हतो द्वैरथे वृषः
Whenever he was asked to give, he always did and never said that he had nothing to give. The virtuous always regarded him as righteous. This Vṛṣa was killed in the duel.
जब भी उनसे देने के लिए कहा गया, उन्होंने हमेशा दिया और कभी नहीं कहा कि उनके पास देने के लिए कुछ नहीं है। सदाचारी लोग उसे सदैव धर्मात्मा मानते थे। यह वृष द्वंद्वयुद्ध में मारा गया।

यस्य ब्राह्मणसात्सर्वमात्मार्थं न महात्मनः
नादेयं ब्राह्मणेष्वासीद्यस्य स्वमपि जीवितम्
The great-souled one gave everything that he possessed to brāhmana-s. There was nothing, not even his own life, which he would not give away to brāhmana-s.
उस महात्मा ने अपना सब कुछ ब्राह्मणों को दे दिया। ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं था, यहाँ तक कि उसका अपना जीवन भी नहीं, जिसे वह ब्राह्मणों को नहीं देता।

सदा नॄणां प्रियो दाता प्रियदानो दिवं गतः
आदाय तव पुत्राणां जयाशां शर्म वर्म च
He was always loved by men. He was generous. He loved giving. He went to heaven. He took away with him the hopes your sons cherished for victory and their comfort and armour.
वह हमेशा पुरुषों से प्यार करता था। वह उदार था. उसे देना बहुत पसंद था. वह स्वर्ग चला गया. वह अपने साथ आपके पुत्रों की विजय की आशाएं, उनका आराम और कवच भी ले गया।
When Karṇa was killed, the rivers stopped flowing. The sun was tainted and set. The blazing planets coursed in a diagonal direction. O king! Yāma's son arose.
जब कर्ण मारा गया तो नदियों का बहना बंद हो गया। सूर्य कलंकित होकर अस्त हो गया। चमकते ग्रह एक विकर्ण दिशा में घूम रहे थे। हे राजा! यम का पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ।
The sky seemed to divide into two parts. The earth seemed to shriek. Extremely harsh and forceful winds began to blow. The directions seemed to blaze fiercely, with a lot of smoke. The giant oceans were agitated and roared loudly.
आकाश दो भागों में बंटा हुआ प्रतीत हो रहा था। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे धरती चीख रही हो. अत्यंत कठोर एवं प्रबल हवाएँ चलने लगीं। ऐसा लग रहा था कि दिशाएँ बहुत अधिक धुएँ के साथ भयंकर रूप से धधक रही हों। विशाल महासागर उत्तेजित हो उठे और जोर से गर्जना करने लगे।
O venerable one! The groves, mountains and large numbers of beings were distressed and trembled. Bṛhaspati afflicted Rohiṇī and assumed the complexion of the moon and the sun.
हे आदरणीय! उपवन, पर्वत और बड़ी संख्या में जीव-जन्तु व्यथित और काँप रहे थे। बृहस्पति ने रोहिणी को पीड़ित किया और चंद्रमा और सूर्य का रंग धारण कर लिया।
When Karṇa was killed, the directions were covered in darkness and could not be distinguished. The firmament and the earth seemed to move. Flaming meteors showered down. Those who travel during the night were seen to be delighted.
जब कर्ण मारा गया, तो दिशाएँ अंधकार में डूब गईं और भेद नहीं किया जा सका। आकाश और पृथ्वी हिलते हुए प्रतीत हो रहे थे। जलती हुई उल्काएँ बरसीं। रात्रि के समय यात्रा करने वाले प्रसन्न नजर आये।
Karṇa's head was as beautiful as the full moon and Arjuna brought it down with a razor-sharp arrow. Loud sounds of lamentation were heard among beings in heaven, in the sky and on the ground.
कर्ण का सिर पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा के समान सुंदर था और अर्जुन ने उसे एक तेज तीर से नीचे गिरा दिया। स्वर्ग में, आकाश में और ज़मीन पर प्राणियों के बीच विलाप की तेज़ आवाज़ें सुनाई दीं।
In the battle, Arjuna killed his enemy, Karṇa, who was revered by the gods, the gāndharva-s and men. Pārtha was resplendent in his supreme energy, like the one with the one thousand eyes, after Vṛtra had been killed.
युद्ध में, अर्जुन ने अपने शत्रु कर्ण को मार डाला, जो देवताओं, गंधर्वों और मनुष्यों द्वारा पूजनीय था। वृत्र के मारे जाने के बाद पार्थ अपनी सर्वोच्च ऊर्जा में देदीप्यमान था, जैसे एक हज़ार आँखों वाला।
That chariot roared like a large mās-s of clouds. Its radiance was like the midday sun in the autumn sky. With its standard and flags, it clattered loudly. It was as radiant as snow, the moon, a conch shell or a crystal. It was ornamented with gold, pearls, jewels, diamonds and coral. It possessed the speed of thought.
वह रथ विशाल मेघों के समान गर्जना करने लगा। उसकी चमक शरद ऋतु के आकाश में दोपहर के सूरज की तरह थी। वह अपने झंडे और झंडों के साथ जोर-जोर से गड़गड़ाने लगा। वह बर्फ, चंद्रमा, शंख या क्रिस्टल के समान दीप्तिमान था। यह सोने, मोती, जवाहरात, हीरे और मूंगा से अलंकृत था। इसमें विचार की गति थी।
Those two supreme among men, Pāṇḍava and the slayer of Keśi were as resplendent as the fire and the sun in that field of battle. They roamed around, without any fear. Astride the same chariot, they were like Viṣṇu and Vāsava.
वे दोनों श्रेष्ठ मनुष्य, पाण्डव तथा केशी के हत्यारे, युद्ध क्षेत्र में अग्नि तथा सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान थे। वे बिना किसी भय के इधर-उधर घूमते रहे। एक ही रथ पर सवार, वे विष्णु और वासव की तरह थे।
The one with the ape on his banner created a tumult with the twang of his bowstring, the slapping of his palms and the clatter of his wheels. He destroyed and killed the enemy with his power. With the one with a bird on his banner with him, he showered torrents of arrows on the Kuru-s. They held their conch shells, as white as snow, in their hands.
जिसके ध्वज पर वानर था, उसने अपनी धनुष की प्रत्यंचा की टंकार, अपनी हथेलियों की थाप और अपने पहियों की गड़गड़ाहट से कोलाहल मचा दिया। उन्होंने अपनी शक्ति से शत्रु को नष्ट कर दिया। अपने ध्वज पर एक पक्षी को साथ लेकर उन्होंने कुरुवंशियों पर बाणों की मूसलाधार वर्षा की। उनके हाथों में बर्फ के समान सफेद शंख थे।
These emitted a loud roar and were decorated with golden nets. Their minds filled with delight, they blew loudly on these conch shells. Placing those best of conch shells against their lips, those best of men, simultaneously blew on them with the best of mouths.
इनसे तेज़ गर्जना होती थी और ये सुनहरे जालों से सजाए गए थे। उनका मन प्रसन्नता से भर गया और उन्होंने इन शंखों को जोर-जोर से बजाया। उन श्रेष्ठ पुरूषों ने उन श्रेष्ठ शंखों को अपने होठों पर रखकर, साथ ही अपने श्रेष्ठ मुखों से उन्हें बजाया।

पाञ्चजन्यस्य निर्घोषो देवदत्तस्य चोभयोः
पृथिवीमन्तरिक्षं च द्यामपश्चाप्यपूरयत्
Pāñcajanya and Devadatta roared. That sound filled up the earth, the sky and heaven.
पाञ्चजन्य और देवदत्त दहाड़ने लगे। उस ध्वनि से पृथ्वी, आकाश और स्वर्ग गूँज उठा।
At the sound of those conch shells, the forest, the mountains, the rivers and the directions were terrified, as were the soldiers of your son. However, those two brave ones delighted Yudhiṣṭhira.
उन शंखों की ध्वनि से वन, पर्वत, नदियाँ और दिशाएँ तथा आपके पुत्र के सैनिक भयभीत हो गये। हालाँकि, उन दोनों वीरों ने युधिष्ठिर को प्रसन्न किया।
As soon as they heard the loud blare of those conch shells, the Kuru-s speedily departed. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They abandoned the lord of Madra and Duryodhana, the lord of the Bhāratas.
जैसे ही उन्होंने उन शंखों की तीव्र ध्वनि सुनी, कुरु तेजी से चले गए। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने मद्र के स्वामी और भरत के स्वामी दुर्योधन को त्याग दिया।
In the great battle, a large number of beings assembled around the radiant Dhanañjayā. They joyfully congratulated him and Janārdana, each dazzling like a sun.
महान युद्ध में, तेजस्वी धनंजय के चारों ओर बड़ी संख्या में प्राणी इकट्ठे हुए। उन्होंने खुशी-खुशी उन्हें और जनार्दन को बधाई दी, दोनों सूर्य की तरह चमक रहे थे।
In the battle, having been struck by Karṇa's arrows, those two scorchers of enemies, Acyuta and Arjuna, looked beautiful. They were like the sparkling moon and sun, garlanded with rays, arising after darkness has been destroyed.
युद्ध में कर्ण के बाणों से घायल होकर शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे दोनों अच्युत और अर्जुन सुन्दर लग रहे थे। वे चमकते चंद्रमा और सूर्य की तरह थे, जो किरणों से माला पहने हुए थे, अंधेरे के नष्ट होने के बाद उभर रहे थे।
Taking out those large numbers of arrows, those valiant lords entered their own camps, surrounded by well-wishers. They were like Vāsava and Acyuta, invoked by officiating priests.
वे वीर राजा बड़ी संख्या में बाण निकालकर शुभचिंतकों से घिरे हुए अपने-अपने शिविरों में घुस गये। वे वासव और अच्युत की तरह थे, जिनका आह्वान कार्यवाहक पुजारियों द्वारा किया जाता था।
When Karṇa was slain in that supreme battle, the gods, the gāndharva-s, men, cāraṇa-s, maharṣi-s, yakṣa-s and giant serpents honoured them greatly and hoped that their victories might continue.
जब कर्ण उस परम युद्ध में मारा गया, तो देवताओं, गंधर्वों, मनुष्यों, चारणों, महर्षियों, यक्षों और विशाल नागों ने उनका बहुत सम्मान किया और आशा की कि उनकी जीत जारी रहेगी।
