संजय उवाच व्यतीतायां रजन्यां तु राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा अब्रवीत्तावकान्सर्वान्संनह्यन्तां महारथाः

Sañjaya said: When night was over, King Duryodhana asked all the mahāratha-s on your side to arm themselves. On hearing the king's command, the army armoured itself.

संजय ने कहा: जब रात हो गई, तो राजा दुर्योधन ने आपके पक्ष के सभी महारथियों से हथियार उठाने को कहा। राजा की आज्ञा सुनकर सेना ने अपने आप को बख्तरबंद कर लिया।

राज्ञस्तु मतमाज्ञाय समनह्यत सा चमूः अयोजयन्रथांस्तूर्णं पर्यधावंस्तथापरे

Some quickly yoked the chariots. Others rushed here and there. The elephants were prepared.

कुछ ने शीघ्रता से रथों को जोत लिया। अन्य लोग इधर-उधर भागे। हाथी तैयार थे.

अकल्प्यन्त च मातङ्गाः समनह्यन्त पत्तयः हयानास्तरणोपेतांश्चक्रुरन्ये सहस्रशः

The foot soldiers were armoured. Thousands of others spread out coverlets on the horses.

पैदल सैनिक बख्तरबंद थे। हजारों अन्य लोग घोड़ों पर चादरें बिछाये हुए थे।

वादित्राणां च निनदः प्रादुरासीद्विशां पते बोधनार्थं हि योधानां सैन्यानां चाप्युदीर्यताम्

O lord of the earth! Musical instruments were sounded and a large roar arose. This was meant to enthuse the warriors and the soldiers.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! संगीत वाद्य बजने लगे और एक बड़ी गर्जना हुई। इसका उद्देश्य योद्धाओं और सैनिकों को उत्साहित करना था।

ततो बलानि सर्वाणि सेनाशिष्टानि भारत संनद्धान्येव ददृशुर्मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the soldiers were seen to be properly arrayed in the army. They made up their minds to die, rather than retreat.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सेना में सभी सैनिक व्यवस्थित रूप से सुसज्जित दिखाई दे रहे थे। उन्होंने पीछे हटने के बजाय मरने का मन बना लिया।

शल्यं सेनापतिं कृत्वा मद्रराजं महारथाः प्रविभज्य बलं सर्वमनीकेषु व्यवस्थिताः

The mahāratha-s made Śalya, the king of Madra, their commander. They divided the army into divisions and stationed themselves.

महारथियों ने मद्र के राजा शल्य को अपना सेनापति बनाया। उन्होंने सेना को टुकड़ियों में बाँट दिया और स्वयं तैनात हो गये।

ततः सर्वे समागम्य पुत्रेण तव सैनिकाः कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिः शल्योऽथ सौबलः

The time having arrived, all the soldiers, with Kṛpa, Kritavarma, Droṇa's son, Śalya and Saubala,

समय आने पर कृप, कृतवर्मा, द्रोणपुत्र शल्य और सौबल सहित सभी सैनिक,

अन्ये च पार्थिवाः शेषाः समयं चक्रिरे तदा न न एकेन योद्धव्यं कथंचिदपि पाण्डवैः

approached your son, together with the kings who were still alive. They resolved, "One who fights alone with the Pāṇḍava-s,

उन राजाओं समेत जो जीवित थे, तेरे पुत्र के पास पहुंचे। उन्होंने निश्चय किया, "जो अकेले ही पांडवों से युद्ध करेगा,

यो ह्येकः पाण्डवैर्युध्येद्यो वा युध्यन्तमुत्सृजेत् स पञ्चभिर्भवेद्युक्तः पातकैः सोपपातकैः अन्योन्यं परिरक्षद्भिर्योद्धव्यं सहितैश्च नः

or one who abandons a cowarrior who is fighting single-handedly with the Pāṇḍaveya-s, will commit a sin equal to the five great sins and all the minor sins. We will protect each other and fight in a united way."

या जो अकेले ही पांडवों से युद्ध कर रहे एक योद्धा को त्याग देता है, वह पांच महान पापों और सभी छोटे पापों के बराबर पाप करेगा। हम एक-दूसरे की रक्षा करेंगे और एकजुट होकर लड़ेंगे।”

एवं ते समयं कृत्वा सर्वे तत्र महारथाः मद्रराजं पुरस्कृत्य तूर्णमभ्यद्रवन्परान्

The time having arrived, all the mahāratha-s adopted such a resolution. With the king of Madra at the forefront, they quickly advanced against the enemy.

समय आने पर सभी महारथियों ने ऐसा संकल्प किया। मद्र के राजा को सबसे आगे रखते हुए, वे तेजी से दुश्मन के खिलाफ आगे बढ़े।

तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्व्यूह्य सैन्यं महारणे अभ्ययुः कौरवान्सर्वान्योत्स्यमानाः समन्ततः

O king! In that fashion, in the great battle, the Pāṇḍava-s also arranged their soldiers in a vyūha. Wishing to fight, all of them advanced against the Kaurava-s from every side.

हे राजा! उसी प्रकार, महान युद्ध में, पांडवों ने भी अपने सैनिकों को व्यूह में व्यवस्थित किया। युद्ध की इच्छा से वे सभी कौरवों के विरुद्ध चारों ओर से आगे बढ़े।

तद्बलं भरतश्रेष्ठ क्षुब्धार्णवसमस्वनम् समुद्धूतार्णवाकारमुद्धूतरथकुञ्जरम्

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! That army made a sound like that of the agitated ocean. With the chariots and the elephants, it assumed a form like that of turbulent waves on an ocean.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! उस सेना ने क्षुब्ध समुद्र के समान ध्वनि उत्पन्न की। रथों और हाथियों के साथ उसने समुद्र की प्रचंड लहरों के समान रूप धारण कर लिया।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच द्रोणस्य भीष्मस्य च वै राधेयस्य च मे श्रुतम् पातनं शंस मे भूयः शल्यस्याथ सुतस्य मे

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: I have heard about the downfall of Droṇa, Bhīṣma and Rādheya. Tell me now about the downfall of Śalya and my son.

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: मैंने द्रोण, भीष्म और राधेय के पतन के बारे में सुना है। अब शल्य और मेरे पुत्र के पतन के विषय में बताओ।

कथं रणे हतः शल्यो धर्मराजेन संजय भीमेन च महाबाहुः पुत्रो दुर्योधनो मम

O Sañjaya! How was Śalya slain by Dharmarāja in the battle? And how was my mighty-armed son, Duryodhana, brought down by Bhīmā?

हे संजय! युद्ध में धर्मराज द्वारा शल्य को कैसे मारा गया? और मेरे महाबाहु पुत्र दुर्योधन को भीम ने कैसे गिरा दिया?

संजय उवाच क्षयं मनुष्यदेहानां रथनागाश्वसंक्षयम् शृणु राजन्स्थिरो भूत्वा संग्रामं शंसतो मम

Sañjaya replied: There was a destruction of the bodies of men, horses, elephants and chariots. O king! Be patient and listen. I will describe the battle that ensued to you.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: मनुष्यों, घोड़ों, हाथियों और रथों के शरीर नष्ट हो गए। हे राजा! धैर्य रखें और सुनें. मैं तुम्हारे साथ हुए युद्ध का वर्णन करूँगा।

आशा बलवती राजन्पुत्राणां तेऽभवत्तदा हते भीष्मे च द्रोणे च सूतपुत्रे च पातिते शल्यः पार्थान्रणे सर्वान्निहनिष्यति मारिष

O king! At that time, hope became powerful among your sons. O venerable one! This was despite Bhīṣma, Droṇa and the son of a sūta having been brought down. They thought that Śalya would kill all the Pārtha-s in the battle.

हे राजा! उस समय तेरे पुत्रोंमें आशा प्रबल हो गई। हे आदरणीय! यह भीष्म, द्रोण और सूतपुत्र को मार गिराए जाने के बावजूद था। उन्होंने सोचा कि शल्य युद्ध में सभी पार्थों को मार डालेंगे।

तामाशां हृदये कृत्वा समाश्वास्य च भारत मद्रराजं च समरे समाश्रित्य महारथम् नाथवन्तमथात्मानममन्यत सुतस्तव

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Resorting to this hope in their hearts, they were comforted. In the battle, they sought refuge with the mahāratha king of Madra. Your son thought that he had found himself a protector.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अपने हृदय में यह आशा रखकर उन्हें सान्त्वना मिली। युद्ध में, उन्होंने मद्र के महारथी राजा से शरण मांगी। आपके बेटे ने सोचा कि उसे अपना रक्षक मिल गया है।

यदा कर्णे हते पार्थाः सिंहनादं प्रचक्रिरे तदा राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रानाविवेश महद्भयम्

O king! When Karṇa was slain, the Pārtha-s roared like lions. At that time, a great fear had overtaken the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

हे राजा! जब कर्ण मारा गया तो पार्थ सिंह की भाँति दहाड़ने लगे। उस समय धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों पर बड़ा भय छा गया था।

तान्समाश्वास्य तु तदा मद्रराजः प्रतापवान् व्यूह्य व्यूहं महाराज सर्वतोभद्रमृद्धिमत्

However, they now sought refuge with the powerful king of Madra. O great king! He had constructed a vyūha that was auspicious in every way.

हालाँकि, अब उन्होंने मद्र के शक्तिशाली राजा की शरण ली। हे महान राजा! उन्होंने एक ऐसे व्यूह का निर्माण किया था जो हर तरह से शुभ था।

प्रत्युद्यातो रणे पार्थान्मद्रराजः प्रतापवान् विधुन्वन्कार्मुकं चित्रं भारघ्नं वेगवत्तरम्

The powerful king of Madra attacked the Pārtha-s in the battle. He brandished his colourful bow, which was extremely forceful and capable of withstanding a great burden.

मद्र के शक्तिशाली राजा ने युद्ध में पार्थ-वंश पर आक्रमण किया। उन्होंने अपना रंग-बिरंगा धनुष लहराया, जो अत्यंत शक्तिशाली था और भारी बोझ सहने में सक्षम था।

रथप्रवरमास्थाय सैन्धवाश्वं महारथः तस्य सीता महाराज रथस्थाशोभयद्रथम्

The mahārāṭha was on an excellent chariot, yoked to horses from the Sindhu region. O great king! The furrows created by the rāṭha's chariot were beautiful to behold.

महाराजा एक उत्कृष्ट रथ पर सवार थे, जिसमें सिंधु क्षेत्र के घोड़े जुते हुए थे। हे महान राजा! रथ के रथ द्वारा बनाए गए कुंड देखने में सुंदर थे।

स तेन संवृतो वीरो रथेनामित्रकर्शनः तस्थौ शूरो महाराज पुत्राणां ते भयप्रणुत्

The brave one, afflicter of enemies, was surrounded by brave rāṭha-s. O great king! The valiant one dispelled the fears of your sons.

वह शूरवीर, शत्रुओं को पीड़ित करने वाला, शूरवीर रथियों से घिरा हुआ था। हे महान राजा! उस वीर ने आपके पुत्रों का भय दूर कर दिया।

प्रयाणे मद्रराजोऽभून्मुखं व्यूहस्य दंशितः मद्रकैः सहितो वीरैः कर्णपुत्रैश्च दुर्जयैः

Armoured and stationed at the head of the vyūha, the king of Madra advanced. He was accompanied by the brave Madraka-s and Karṇa's invincible sons.

मद्र के राजा बख्तरबंद और व्यूह के शीर्ष पर तैनात होकर आगे बढ़े। He was accompanied by the brave Madraka-s and Karṇa's invincible sons.

सव्येऽभूत्कृतवर्मा च त्रिगर्तैः परिवारितः गौतमो दक्षिणे पार्श्वे शकैश्च यवनैः सह

Kritavarma, surrounded by the Trigarta-s, was on the left flank. With the Śāka-s and the Yāvana-s, Gautama was on the right flank.

त्रिगर्त-से घिरा हुआ कृतवर्मा बायीं ओर था। शकों और यवनों के साथ, गौतम दाहिनी ओर थे।

अश्वत्थामा पृष्ठतोऽभूत्काम्बोजैः परिवारितः दुर्योधनोऽभवन्मध्ये रक्षितः कुरुपुंगवैः

Surrounded by the Kāmboja-s, Aśvatthāma was at the rear. Protected by the bulls among the Kuru-s, Duryodhana was in the middle.

कम्बोज से घिरा हुआ, अश्वत्थामा पीछे था। कुरुवंश में बैलों द्वारा सुरक्षित, दुर्योधन मध्य में था।

हयानीकेन महता सौबलश्चापि संवृतः प्रययौ सर्वसैन्येन कैतव्यश्च महारथः

Saubala was surrounded by a large army of horses. The gambler's mahāratha son advanced with all the soldiers.

सौबाला घोड़ों की एक बड़ी सेना से घिरा हुआ था। जुआरी का महारथी पुत्र सभी सैनिकों के साथ आगे बढ़ा।

पाण्डवाश्च महेष्वासा व्यूह्य सैन्यमरिंदमाः त्रिधा भूत्वा महाराज तव सैन्यमुपाद्रवन्

The Pāṇḍava-s, great archers and scorchers of enemies, also arranged their soldiers into a vyūha. O great king! They divided themselves into three and attacked your soldiers.

महान धनुर्धर और शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले पांडवों ने भी अपने सैनिकों को एक व्यूह में व्यवस्थित किया। हे महान राजा! उन्होंने अपने आप को तीन भागों में बाँट लिया और आपके सैनिकों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च सात्यकिश्च महारथः शल्यस्य वाहिनीं तूर्णमभिदुद्रुवुराहवे

In the battle, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī and mahāratha Sātyaki quickly rushed against Śalya's army.

युद्ध में धृष्टद्युम्न, शिखंडी और महारथी सात्यकि तेजी से शल्य की सेना पर टूट पड़े।

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा स्वेनानीकेन संवृतः शल्यमेवाभिदुद्राव जिघांसुर्भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Wishing to kill, King Yudhiṣṭhira surrounded himself by his own troops and attacked Śalya.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! मारने की इच्छा से राजा युधिष्ठिर ने स्वयं अपनी सेना से घेर लिया और शल्य पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

हार्दिक्यं तु महेष्वासमर्जुनः शत्रुपूगहा संशप्तकगणांश्चैव वेगतोऽभिविदुद्रुवे

The great archer Arjuna, the slayer of enemy hordes, powerfully rushed against Hārdikya and large numbers of saṃśaptaka-s.

महान धनुर्धर अर्जुन, शत्रुदल का संहारक, हार्दिक्य और बड़ी संख्या में संशप्तकों पर शक्तिशाली रूप से टूट पड़ा।

गौतमं भीमसेनो वै सोमकाश्च महारथाः अभ्यद्रवन्त राजेन्द्र जिघांसन्तः परान्युधि

O Indra among kings! Wishing to kill the enemy in the battle, Bhīmasena and the mahāratha Somaka-s attacked Gautama.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! युद्ध में शत्रु को मारने की इच्छा से भीमसेन और महारथी सोमक ने गौतम पर आक्रमण किया।

माद्रीपुत्रौ तु शकुनिमुलूकं च महारथौ ससैन्यौ सहसेनौ तावुपतस्थतुराहवे

In the battle, mahāratha Śākuni and Ulūka were stationed with their forces, and Mādrī's two sons attacked them, with their soldiers.

युद्ध में, महाराज शकुनि और उलूक अपनी सेना के साथ तैनात थे, और माद्री के दो पुत्रों ने अपने सैनिकों के साथ उन पर हमला किया।

तथैवायुतशो योधास्तावकाः पाण्डवान्रणे अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धा विविधायुधपाणयः

In that way, tens of thousands of your warriors angrily attacked the Pāṇḍava-s in the battle, with many different kinds of weapons in their hands.

इस प्रकार आपके हजारों योद्धाओं ने हाथों में नाना प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्र लेकर क्रोधपूर्वक युद्ध में पाण्डवों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच हते भीष्मे महेष्वासे द्रोणे कर्णे महारथे कुरुष्वल्पावशिष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु च संयुगे

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: O Sañjaya! The great archers and mahāratha-s, Bhīṣma, Droṇa and Karṇa, were killed. In the battle, among the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, there were only a few left.

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: हे संजय! महान धनुर्धर और महारथी, भीष्म, द्रोण और कर्ण मारे गये। युद्ध में कुरु और पांडवों में से कुछ ही बचे थे।

सुसंरब्धेषु पार्थेषु पराक्रान्तेषु संजय मामकानां परेषां च किं शिष्टमभवद्बलम्

The powerful Pārtha-s again became enraged in the battle. What were the remaining forces on my side, and on the side of the enemy?

युद्ध में शक्तिशाली पार्थ पुनः क्रोधित हो गये। मेरी ओर से और शत्रु की ओर से शेष शक्तियाँ क्या थीं?

संजय उवाच यथा वयं परे राजन्युद्धाय समवस्थिताः यावच्चासीद्बलं शिष्टं संग्रामे तन्निबोध मे

Sañjaya replied: O king! The remaining forces on our side, and on that of the enemy, were stationed for battle again. Listen to who were left in the encounter.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे राजा! हमारी और शत्रु की ओर की शेष सेनाएँ फिर से युद्ध के लिए तैनात थीं। सुनिए मुठभेड़ में कौन बचे थे.

एकादश सहस्राणि रथानां भरतर्षभ दश दन्तिसहस्राणि सप्त चैव शतानि च

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Your side had eleven thousand rāṭha-s, ten thousand and seven hundred elephants

हे भरत वंश में बैल! आपके पक्ष में ग्यारह हजार रथ, दस हजार सात सौ हाथी थे

पूर्णे शतसहस्रे द्वे हयानां भरतर्षभ नरकोट्यस्तथा तिस्रो बलमेतत्तवाभवत्

and a complete complement of two hundred thousand horses. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! There were also three crores of men.

और दो लाख घोड़ों का पूरा पूरक। हे भरत वंश में बैल! वहाँ भी तीन करोड़ आदमी थे।

रथानां षट्सहस्राणि षट्सहस्राश्च कुञ्जराः दश चाश्वसहस्राणि पत्तिकोटी च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The forces of the Pāṇḍava-s consisted of six thousand rāṭha-s, six thousand elephants, ten thousand horses and one crore of foot soldiers.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पांडवों की सेना में छह हजार रथ, छह हजार हाथी, दस हजार घोड़े और एक करोड़ पैदल सैनिक शामिल थे।

एतद्बलं पाण्डवानामभवच्छेषमाहवे एत एव समाजग्मुर्युद्धाय भरतर्षभ

This is what was left to them in the battle. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! These were the ones who attacked each other.

युद्ध में उनके पास यही बचा था। हे भरत वंश में बैल! ये वही थे जिन्होंने एक दूसरे पर हमला किया था.

एवं विभज्य राजेन्द्र मद्रराजमते स्थिताः पाण्डवान्प्रत्युदीयाम जयगृद्धाः प्रमन्यवः

O Indra among kings! We followed the instructions of the king of Madra and divided ourselves. Desiring victory, we advanced against the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! हमने मद्र के राजा के निर्देशों का पालन किया और खुद को विभाजित कर लिया। विजय की इच्छा से हम पांडवों के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़े।

तथैव पाण्डवाः शूराः समरे जितकाशिनः उपयाता नरव्याघ्राः पाञ्चालाश्च यशस्विनः

In that way, the brave Pāṇḍava-s also wished for victory in the battle. With the illustrious Pāñcāla-s, those tigers among men attacked.

इस प्रकार वीर पाण्डव भी युद्ध में विजय की कामना करते थे। उन मनुष्यों में से उन बाघों ने प्रसिद्ध पंचालों के साथ आक्रमण किया।

एवमेते बलौघेन परस्परवधैषिणः उपयाता नरव्याघ्राः पूर्वां संध्यां प्रति प्रभो

O lord! When it was dawn, thus did those tigers among men ruṣ against each other, wishing to kill each other and ruṣing forward in strong waves.

हे भगवान! जब भोर हुई, तो वे मनुष्य बाघ एक-दूसरे को मारने की इच्छा से एक-दूसरे पर टूट पड़े और तेज लहरों में आगे बढ़ गए।

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं घोररूपं भयानकम् तावकानां परेषां च निघ्नतामितरेतरम्

A fierce battle commenced and it was terrible in form. Those on your side, and the enemy, wished to kill each other.

भयंकर युद्ध प्रारम्भ हो गया और उसका रूप भयानक था। आपके पक्ष के लोग और शत्रु एक-दूसरे को मारना चाहते थे।
