संजय उवाच एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राज्ञो मद्रराजः प्रतापवान् दुर्योधनं तदा राजन्वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह

Sañjaya said: O king! On hearing the king's words, the powerful king of Madra spoke these words to Duryodhana.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! राजा की बात सुनकर मद्र देश के शक्तिशाली राजा ने दुर्योधन से ये बातें कहीं।

दुर्योधन महाबाहो शृणु वाक्यविदां वर यावेतौ मन्यसे कृष्णौ रथस्थौ रथिनां वरौ न मे तुल्यावुभावेतौ बाहुवीर्ये कथंचन

"O Duryodhana! O mighty-armed one! O supreme among eloquent ones! Listen to my words. You think that the two Kṛṣṇās, stationed on their chariot, are supreme among rāṭha-s. However, though united, they are not my equal in strength of arms.

"हे दुर्योधन! हे महाबाहु! हे वाक्पटुओं में श्रेष्ठ! मेरे शब्दों को सुनो। तुम सोचते हो कि रथ पर तैनात दोनों कृष्ण, रथों में सर्वोच्च हैं। हालांकि, एकजुट होने के बावजूद, वे हथियारों की ताकत में मेरे बराबर नहीं हैं।

उद्यतां पृथिवीं सर्वां ससुरासुरमानवाम् योधयेयं रणमुखे संक्रुद्धः किमु पाण्डवान् विजेष्ये च रणे पार्थान्सोमकांश्च समागतान्

Even if the entire earth were to arise, with gods, āsura-s and men, I will angrily fight with them in the forefront of the battle, not to speak of the Pāṇḍava-s. In the battle, I will vanquish the assembled Pārtha-s and Somaka-s.

यदि सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी देवता, असुर तथा मनुष्य सहित उत्पन्न हो जाय, तो भी मैं क्रोधपूर्वक युद्ध में सबसे आगे रहकर उनसे युद्ध करूँगा, पाण्डवों की तो बात ही छोड़ दीजिये। युद्ध में मैं इकट्ठे हुए पार्थ-स और सोमक-स को परास्त कर दूँगा।

अहं सेनाप्रणेता ते भविष्यामि न संशयः तं च व्यूहं विधास्यामि न तरिष्यन्ति यं परे इति सत्यं ब्रवीम्येष दुर्योधन न संशयः

There is no doubt that I will protect your soldiers. I will construct a vyūha that the enemy will not be able to cross. O Duryodhana! I am telling you this truthfully. Entertain no doubt on this score."

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि मैं आपके सैनिकों की रक्षा करूंगा। मैं एक ऐसे व्यूह का निर्माण करूंगा जिसे शत्रु पार नहीं कर पाएगा। हे दुर्योधन! यह बात मैं तुमसे सच-सच कह रहा हूं. इस संबंध में कोई संदेह नहीं कि मनोरंजन करें।"

एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा मद्राधिपतिमञ्जसा अभ्यषिञ्चत सेनाया मध्ये भरतसत्तम विधिना शास्त्रदृष्टेन हृष्टरूपो विशां पते

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! O lord of the earth! The king was thus addressed by the lord of Madra and delightedly, in the midst of the soldiers, sanctified him with water, in accordance with the rites laid down in the sacred texts.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! राजा को इस प्रकार मद्र के स्वामी ने संबोधित किया और प्रसन्नतापूर्वक, सैनिकों के बीच में, पवित्र ग्रंथों में निर्धारित संस्कारों के अनुसार, उसे पानी से पवित्र किया।

अभिषिक्ते ततस्तस्मिन्सिंहनादो महानभूत् तव सैन्येष्ववाद्यन्त वादित्राणि च भारत

When he was consecrated, a loud noise arose among the soldiers. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They roared like lions and musical instruments were sounded.

जब उनका अभिषेक किया गया तो सैनिकों में बड़ा शोर मच गया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वे सिंहों के समान दहाड़ने लगे और बाजे बजने लगे।

हृष्टाश्चासंस्तदा योधा मद्रकाश्च महारथाः तुष्टुवुश्चैव राजानं शल्यमाहवशोभिनम्

The mahāratha Madraka warriors were delighted. All the kings praised Śalya, the ornament of a battle.

महारथ मद्रक योद्धा प्रसन्न हुए। सभी राजाओं ने युद्ध के आभूषण शल्य की प्रशंसा की।

जय राजंश्चिरं जीव जहि शत्रून्समागतान् तव बाहुबलं प्राप्य धार्तराष्ट्रा महाबलाः निखिलां पृथिवीं सर्वां प्रशासन्तु हतद्विषः

"O king! May you be victorious. May you live for a long time. Slay the assembled enemy. The immensely strong son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra has obtained the strength of your arms. Let him slaughter the enemy and rule over the entire earth.

"हे राजा! आप विजयी हों। आप दीर्घकाल तक जीवित रहें। एकत्रित शत्रु को मार डालो। धृतराष्ट्र के अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्र ने आपकी भुजाओं का बल प्राप्त कर लिया है। वह शत्रु का संहार करे और संपूर्ण पृथ्वी पर शासन करे।"

त्वं हि शक्तो रणे जेतुं ससुरासुरमानवान् मर्त्यधर्माण इह तु किमु सोमकसृञ्जयान्

You are capable of defeating the gods, the āsura-s and humans in a battle, not to speak of the Somaka-s and the Sṛñjaya-s, who must follow the dharma of mortals."

आप युद्ध में देवताओं, असुरों और मनुष्यों को हराने में सक्षम हैं, सोमकों और सृंजय लोगों की तो बात ही छोड़ दें, जिन्हें मनुष्यों के धर्म का पालन करना चाहिए।"

एवं संस्तूयमानस्तु मद्राणामधिपो बली हर्षं प्राप तदा वीरो दुरापमकृतात्मभिः

The powerful lord of the Madra-s was praised in this way. The brave one was filled with great joy, the likes of which cannot be obtained by those who have not controlled their souls.

मद्रवंश के शक्तिशाली स्वामी की इस प्रकार स्तुति की गई। वह बहादुर अत्यंत आनंद से भर गया, जिसकी खुशी उन लोगों को नहीं मिल सकती, जिन्होंने अपनी आत्मा पर नियंत्रण नहीं रखा है।

शल्य उवाच अद्यैवाहं रणे सर्वान्पाञ्चालान्सह पाण्डवैः निहनिष्यामि राजेन्द्र स्वर्गं यास्यामि वा हतः

Śalya said: O Indra among kings! In the battle today, I will slay all the Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, or be slain and go to heaven.

शल्य ने कहा: हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! आज युद्ध में, मैं सभी पंचालों और पांडवों को मार डालूँगा, या मारा जाऊँगा और स्वर्ग चला जाऊँगा।

अद्य पश्यन्तु मां लोका विचरन्तमभीतवत् अद्य पाण्डुसुताः सर्वे वासुदेवः ससात्यकिः

The worlds will see me roam around fearlessly today. Let all the sons of Pāṇḍu, Vāsudeva, Sātyaki,

संसार आज मुझे निर्भय घूमता हुआ देखेगा। पाण्डु के सभी पुत्र, वासुदेव, सात्यकि,

पाञ्चालाश्चेदयश्चैव द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च सर्वे चापि प्रभद्रकाः

the Pāñcāla-s, the Cedi-s, all the sons of Draupadī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī and all the Prabhadraka-s

पंचाल, सेडिस, द्रौपदी के सभी पुत्र, धृष्टद्युम्न, शिखंडी और सभी प्रभद्रक-एस

विक्रमं मम पश्यन्तु धनुषश्च महद्बलम् लाघवं चास्त्रवीर्यं च भुजयोश्च बलं युधि

behold my valour and the great strength of my bow, in addition to the dexterity and valour of my weapons and the strength of my arms in the encounter.

मेरी वीरता और मेरे धनुष की महान शक्ति को देखो, साथ ही मेरे हथियारों की निपुणता और वीरता और मुठभेड़ में मेरी भुजाओं की शक्ति को देखो।

अद्य पश्यन्तु मे पार्थाः सिद्धाश्च सह चारणैः यादृशं मे बलं बाह्वोः संपदस्त्रेषु या च मे

Let the Pārtha-s, the siddha-s and the cāraṇa-s behold me today, with the strength of my arms and the wealth of my weapons.

आज पार्थ, सिद्ध और चारण मेरी भुजाओं के बल और मेरे शस्त्रों के धन से मुझे देखें।

अद्य मे विक्रमं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां महारथाः प्रतीकारपरा भूत्वा चेष्टन्तां विविधाः क्रियाः

The mahāratha Pāṇḍava-s will witness my valour today. Let the enemy try out different means of countering me.

आज महारथी पाण्डव मेरी वीरता के साक्षी बनेंगे। शत्रु को मेरा मुकाबला करने के लिए विभिन्न तरीकों का प्रयास करने दें।

अद्य सैन्यानि पाण्डूनां द्रावयिष्ये समन्ततः द्रोणभीष्मावति विभो सूतपुत्रं च संयुगे विचरिष्ये रणे युध्यन्प्रियार्थं तव कौरव

Today, I will drive away the Pāṇḍu soldiers in every direction. O Kaurava! For the sake of bringing you pleasure, I will roam around and fight in the battle today, surpassing Droṇa, Bhīṣma and the son of a sūta."

आज मैं पाण्डु सैनिकों को हर दिशा से खदेड़ दूँगा। हे कौरव! तुम्हें प्रसन्न करने के लिए मैं द्रोण, भीष्म तथा सूतपुत्र को भी पछाड़कर आज चारों ओर घूमूँगा और युद्ध लड़ूँगा।"

संजय उवाच अभिषिक्ते तदा शल्ये तव सैन्येषु मानद न कर्णव्यसनं किंचिन्मेनिरे तत्र भारत

Sañjaya said: O one who grants honours! Amidst your soldiers, Śalya was thus consecrated. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! No one felt any sorrow on account of Karṇa.

संजय ने कहा: हे सम्मान देने वाले! इस प्रकार आपके सैनिकों के बीच शल्य का अभिषेक किया गया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कर्ण के कारण किसी को कोई दुःख नहीं हुआ।

हृष्टाः सुमनसश्चैव बभूवुस्तत्र सैनिकाः मेनिरे निहतान्पार्थान्मद्रराजवशं गतान्

The soldiers were happy and cheerful in their minds. They thought that the Pārtha-s had already been killed and had come under the subjugation of the king of Madra.

सैनिक मन में प्रसन्न और प्रफुल्लित थे। उन्होंने सोचा कि पार्थ-वंश पहले ही मारा जा चुका है और मद्र के राजा की अधीनता में आ गया है।

प्रहर्षं प्राप्य सेना तु तावकी भरतर्षभ तां रात्रिं सुखिनी सुप्ता स्वस्थचित्तेव साभवत्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Your soldiers were filled with great joy. They were assured and slept happily during the night.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! आपके सैनिक बड़े हर्ष से भर गये। वे निश्चिंत हो गये और रात को सुखपूर्वक सोये।

सैन्यस्य तव तं शब्दं श्रुत्वा राजा युधिष्ठिरः वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीद्वाक्यं सर्वक्षत्रस्य शृण्वतः

On hearing the sounds made by your soldiers, while all the kṣatriya-s heard, King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke these words to Vārṣṇeya.

आपके सैनिकों द्वारा की गई ध्वनि को जब सभी क्षत्रियों ने सुना, तब राजा युधिष्ठिर ने वार्ष्णेय से ये शब्द कहे।

मद्रराजः कृतः शल्यो धार्तराष्ट्रेण माधव सेनापतिर्महेष्वासः सर्वसैन्येषु पूजितः

"O Mādhava! Honoured by all the soldiers, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son has made the great archer, Śalya, the king of Madra, the commander.

"हे माधव! सभी सैनिकों द्वारा सम्मानित, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र ने मद्र के राजा, महान धनुर्धर शल्य को सेनापति बनाया है।

एतज्ज्ञात्वा यथाभूतं कुरु माधव यत्क्षमम् भवान्नेता च गोप्ता च विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम्

O Mādhava! Having heard this, do what is beneficial. You are our leader and our protector. Do what must be done next."

हे माधव! यह सुनकर जो हित हो वही करो। आप हमारे नेता और हमारे रक्षक हैं. आगे जो करना चाहिए वह करो।"

तमब्रवीन्महाराज वासुदेवो जनाधिपम् आर्तायनिमहं जाने यथातत्त्वेन भारत

O great king! Vāsudeva told the king, "O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I know everything about Ārtāyani.

हे महान राजा! वासुदेव ने राजा से कहा, "हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैं अर्तायनी के बारे में सब कुछ जानता हूं।

वीर्यवांश्च महातेजा महात्मा च विशेषतः कृती च चित्रयोधी च संयुक्तो लाघवेन च

He is brave and immensely energetic. In particular, he is great-souled. He is accomplished and colourful in fighting. He also possesses dexterity.

वह बहादुर और बेहद ऊर्जावान हैं।' विशेषत: वह महानात्मा हैं। वह लड़ने में निपुण और रंगीन है। उसके पास निपुणता भी है।

यादृग्भीष्मस्तथा द्रोणो यादृक्कर्णश्च संयुगे तादृशस्तद्विशिष्टो वा मद्रराजो मतो मम

In an encounter, he is like Bhīṣma, Droṇa and Karṇa. The king of Madra may even be superior to them. That is my view.

मुठभेड़ में, वह भीष्म, द्रोण और कर्ण की तरह है। मद्र का राजा उनसे भी श्रेष्ठ हो सकता है। यही मेरा विचार है.

युध्यमानस्य तस्याजौ चिन्तयन्नेव भारत योद्धारं नाधिगच्छामि तुल्यरूपं जनाधिप

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O lord of men! On thinking about it, I cannot find a warrior on your side who is his equal.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! विचार करने पर मुझे आपके पक्ष में कोई ऐसा योद्धा नहीं मिलता जो उसके समकक्ष हो।

शिखण्ड्यर्जुनभीमानां सात्वतस्य च भारत धृष्टद्युम्नस्य च तथा बलेनाभ्यधिको रणे

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In the battle, he possesses a strength that is superior to Śikhaṇḍī, Arjuna, Bhīmā, Sātvata and Dhṛṣṭadyumna.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! युद्ध में, उसके पास शिखंडी, अर्जुन, भीम, सात्वत और धृष्टद्युम्न से बेहतर ताकत है।

मद्रराजो महाराज सिंहद्विरदविक्रमः विचरिष्यत्यभीः काले कालः क्रुद्धः प्रजास्विव

O great king! The king of Madra is like a lion and an elephant in valour. He will roam around fearlessly, like a wrathful Destroyer among beings, when the time for destruction has arrived.

हे महान राजा! मद्र देश का राजा वीरता में सिंह और हाथी के समान है। जब विनाश का समय आ जाएगा, तो वह प्राणियों के बीच क्रोधी संहारक की तरह निर्भय होकर घूमेगा।

तस्याद्य न प्रपश्यामि प्रतियोद्धारमाहवे त्वामृते पुरुषव्याघ्र शार्दूलसमविक्रमम्

O tiger among men! In the battle today, with the exception of you, I do not see any warrior who can fight against him. He is like a tiger in his bravery.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! आज युद्ध में तुम्हारे अतिरिक्त मुझे कोई ऐसा योद्धा दिखाई नहीं देता, जो उसके विरुद्ध लड़ सके। वह अपनी वीरता में बाघ के समान है।

सदेवलोके कृत्स्नेऽस्मिन्नान्यस्त्वत्तः पुमान्भवेत् मद्रराजं रणे क्रुद्धं यो हन्यात्कुरुनन्दन अहन्यहनि युध्यन्तं क्षोभयन्तं बलं तव

Barring you, there is no other man in all of heaven or earth. O descendant of the Kuru lineage! In a battle, there is no one else who can kill the angry king of Madra. He has fought from one day to another, agitating your troops.

तुम्हें छोड़कर समस्त स्वर्ग अथवा पृथ्वी पर कोई दूसरा मनुष्य नहीं है। हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! युद्ध में क्रोधित मद्र राजा को कोई और नहीं मार सकता। वह आपके सैनिकों को उत्तेजित करते हुए एक दिन से दूसरे दिन तक लड़ता रहा है।

तस्माज्जहि रणे शल्यं मघवानिव शम्बरम् अतिपश्चादसौ वीरो धार्तराष्ट्रेण सत्कृतः

Therefore, kill Śalya in the battle, like Maghavan against Śambara. The brave one is revered by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son.

इसलिए, युद्ध में मघवन की तरह शांबर के विरुद्ध शल्य को मार डालो। धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र द्वारा वीर की पूजा की जाती है।

तवैव हि जयो नूनं हते मद्रेश्वरे युधि तस्मिन्हते हतं सर्वं धार्तराष्ट्रबलं महत्

When the lord of Madra is killed in the battle, thereafter, victory will be certain. When he is slain, the large army of the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will also be completely destroyed.

जब मद्रराज युद्ध में मारे जायेंगे तो विजय निश्चित होगी। उसके मारे जाने पर धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र की बड़ी सेना भी पूरी तरह नष्ट हो जायेगी।

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज वचनं मम सांप्रतम् प्रत्युद्याहि रणे पार्थ मद्रराजं महाबलम् जहि चैनं महाबाहो वासवो नमुचिं यथा

O great king! O Pārtha! In the battle, having heard my words, advance against the large army of the king of Madra. O mightyarmed one! Slay him, like Vāsava against Namuci.

हे महान राजा! हे पार्थ! मेरी बात सुनकर तुम युद्ध में मद्रराज की विशाल सेना के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ो। हे पराक्रमी! नमुची के विरुद्ध वासव की तरह, उसे मार डालो।

न चैवात्र दया कार्या मातुलोऽयं ममेति वै क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य जहि मद्रजनेश्वरम्

You should not think of him as your maternal uncle and show any compassion. With the dharma of kṣatriya-s at the forefront, kill the lord of Madra.

तुम्हें उसे अपना मामा समझकर दया नहीं करनी चाहिए। क्षत्रिय-धर्म को सबसे आगे रखते हुए, मद्र के स्वामी को मार डालो।

भीष्मद्रोणार्णवं तीर्त्वा कर्णपातालसंभवम् मा निमज्जस्व सगणः शल्यमासाद्य गोष्पदम्

The ocean of Bhīṣma and Droṇa and the nether region of Karṇa have been crossed. Having encountered the trifle of Śalya, do not get submerged, with your followers.

भीष्म और द्रोण का समुद्र और कर्ण का पाताल पार कर लिया गया है। शल्य की तुच्छ बातों का सामना करने के बाद, अपने अनुयायियों के साथ डूब मत जाओ।

यच्च ते तपसो वीर्यं यच्च क्षात्रं बलं तव तद्दर्शय रणे सर्वं जहि चैनं महारथम्

You possess austerities and valour and the strength of kṣatriya-s. Exhibit all of those in the battle. Kill the mahāratha."

आपके पास तपस्या, वीरता और क्षत्रियों की ताकत है। युद्ध में उन सभी का प्रदर्शन करें। महारथ को मार डालो।"

एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं केशवः परवीरहा जगाम शिबिरं सायं पूज्यमानोऽथ पाण्डवैः

Having spoken these words, Keśava, the slayer of enemy heroes, was honoured by the Pāṇḍava-s. In the evening, he went to his own camp.

ये वचन कहकर शत्रुवीरों का संहार करने वाले केशव का पांडवों द्वारा सम्मान किया गया। शाम को वह अपने डेरे पर चला गया।

केशवे तु तदा याते धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः विसृज्य सर्वान्भ्रातॄंश्च पाञ्चालानथ सोमकान् सुष्वाप रजनीं तां तु विशल्य इव कुञ्जरः

When Keśava had left, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira dismissed all his brothers and the Pāñcāla-s and the Somaka-s. He slept happily in the night, like an elephant from which stakes have been removed.

जब केशव चले गए, तो धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने अपने सभी भाइयों और पंचालों और सोमकों को बर्खास्त कर दिया। वह रात को उस हाथी की भाँति सुख से सोया, जिस प्रकार खूंटी उतार दी गई हो।

ते च सर्वे महेष्वासाः पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवास्तथा कर्णस्य निधने हृष्टाः सुषुपुस्तां निशां तदा

All the Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s, great archers, were delighted that Karṇa had been killed, and slept well during the night.

सभी पंचाल और पांडव, महान धनुर्धर, प्रसन्न थे कि कर्ण मारा गया था, और रात के दौरान अच्छी नींद सोये।

गतज्वरं महेष्वासं तीर्णपारं महारथम् बभूव पाण्डवेयानां सैन्यं प्रमुदितं निशि सूतपुत्रस्य निधने जयं लब्ध्वा च मारिष

The great archers were cured of their fever. The mahāratha-s had reached a bank. The Pāṇḍaveya soldiers rejoiced during the night. O venerable one! With the son of a sūta slain, they had obtained victory.

बड़े-बड़े धनुर्धर अपने बुखार से ठीक हो गये। महारथी एक तट पर पहुँच गये थे। रात्रि के समय पाण्डवीय सैनिकों ने आनन्द मनाया। हे आदरणीय! सूतपुत्र को मारकर उन्होंने विजय प्राप्त की थी।
