संजय उवाच अथ हैमवते प्रस्थे स्थित्वा युद्धाभिनन्दिनः सर्व एव महाराज योधास्तत्र समागताः

Sañjaya said: O great king! All those warriors were delighted at the prospect of battle and gathered together on the slopes of the Himālaya-s.

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! वे सभी योद्धा युद्ध की संभावना से प्रसन्न हुए और हिमालय की ढलानों पर एकत्र हुए।

शल्यश्च चित्रसेनश्च शकुनिश्च महारथः अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः

Śalya, Citrasenā, mahāratha Śākuni, Aśvatthāma, Kṛpa, Sātvata Kritavarma,

शल्य, चित्रसेना, महाराज शकुनि, अश्वत्थामा, कृपा, सात्वत कृतवर्मा,

सुषेणोऽरिष्टसेनश्च धृतसेनश्च वीर्यवान् जयत्सेनश्च राजानस्ते रात्रिमुषितास्ततः

Suṣeṇa, Ariṣṭasena, the valiant Dhṛtasena, Jayatsenā and the kings spent the night there.

सुषेण, अरिष्टसेन, वीर धृतसेन, जयत्सेन और राजाओं ने वहाँ रात बिताई।

रणे कर्णे हते वीरे त्रासिता जितकाशिभिः नालभञ्शर्म ते पुत्रा हिमवन्तमृते गिरिम्

When the brave Karṇa was killed in the battle, though your sons desired victory, they were terrified and could find no peace, other than on the slopes of the Himālaya-s.

जब युद्ध में वीर कर्ण मारा गया, तो यद्यपि आपके पुत्र विजय की इच्छा रखते थे, फिर भी वे भयभीत हो गये और उन्हें हिमालय की ढलानों के अलावा कहीं शांति नहीं मिली।

तेऽब्रुवन्सहितास्तत्र राजानं सैन्यसंनिधौ कृतयत्ना रणे राजन्संपूज्य विधिवत्तदा

O king! Having resolved to make every effort in the battle, in the presence of the soldiers, they honoured the king in the prescribed way and, united, said,

हे राजा! उन्होंने युद्ध में हर संभव प्रयास करने का निश्चय करके सैनिकों की उपस्थिति में राजा का यथाविधि सम्मान किया और एकजुट होकर कहा।

कृत्वा सेनाप्रणेतारं परांस्त्वं योद्धुमर्हसि येनाभिगुप्ताः संग्रामे जयेमासुहृदो वयम्

"You should fight with the enemy after having decided on a commander. All the well-wishers will then be protected by him and obtain victory."

"आपको एक सेनापति का निर्णय करके ही शत्रु से युद्ध करना चाहिए। तब उससे सभी शुभचिंतकों की रक्षा होगी और विजय प्राप्त होगी।"

ततो दुर्योधनः स्थित्वा रथे रथवरोत्तमम् सर्वयुद्धविभागज्ञमन्तकप्रतिमं युधि

Stationed on his chariot, Duryodhana went to the supreme among rāṭha-s, who knew about all the kinds of warfare and was unmatched in a battle.

दुर्योधन अपने रथ पर सवार होकर रथों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ के पास गया, जो सभी प्रकार के युद्धों को जानता था और युद्ध में बेजोड़ था।

स्वङ्गं प्रच्छन्नशिरसं कम्बुग्रीवं प्रियंवदम् व्याकोशपद्माभिमुखं व्याघ्रास्यं मेरुगौरवम्

He was pleasant in speech and his neck was like that of a conch shell. He possessed a sword and his head was covered. His face was like a blooming lotus. His mouth was like that of a tiger and he had the majesty of Meru.

उनकी वाणी मधुर थी और उनकी गर्दन शंख के समान थी। उसके पास तलवार थी और उसका सिर ढका हुआ था। उनका मुख खिले हुए कमल के समान था। उनका मुख बाघ के समान था और उनमें मेरु के समान ऐश्वर्य था।

स्थाणोर्वृषस्य सदृशं स्कन्धनेत्रगतिस्वरैः पुष्टश्लिष्टायतभुजं सुविस्तीर्णघनोरसम्

His shoulders, eyes, gait and voice was like that of Sthāṇu's bull. His arms were thick and long, with excellent joints. His chest was extremely broad and well formed.

उसके कंधे, आंखें, चाल और आवाज स्थाणु के बैल की तरह थी। उसकी भुजाएँ मोटी और लंबी थीं, जिनमें उत्कृष्ट जोड़ थे। उनकी छाती अत्यंत चौड़ी और सुगठित थी.

जवे बले च सदृशमरुणानुजवातयोः आदित्यस्य त्विषा तुल्यं बुद्ध्या चोशनसा समम्

In his speed and strength, he was like Aruṇā's younger brother. He was like the sun in his splendour and like Uśanas in his intelligence.

अपनी गति और शक्ति में वह अरुणा के छोटे भाई के समान था। वह अपने तेज में सूर्य के समान और अपनी बुद्धि में उषासन के समान था।

कान्तिरूपमुखैश्वर्यैस्त्रिभिश्चन्द्रमसोपमम् काञ्चनोपलसंघातैः सदृशं श्लिष्टसंधिकम्

He was like the moon in three respects—the beauty of his form, his face and his prosperity. The joints on his body seemed to be made out of golden lotuses.

वह तीन दृष्टियों से चंद्रमा के समान थे - रूप की सुंदरता, चेहरे की सुंदरता और समृद्धि। उनके शरीर के जोड़ स्वर्ण कमलों से बने हुए प्रतीत होते थे।

सुवृत्तोरुकटीजङ्घं सुपादं स्वङ्गुलीनखम् स्मृत्वा स्मृत्वैव च गुणान्धात्रा यत्नाद्विनिर्मितम्

His thighs, waist and feet were formed well, and so were his fingers and nails. He was created by the creator with great care, after remembering all the qualities that should be remembered.

उसकी जाँघें, कमर और पैर अच्छी तरह से बने हुए थे, और उसकी उंगलियाँ और नाखून भी अच्छे थे। उसे विधाता ने बड़े ध्यान से, याद रखने लायक सभी गुणों को याद करके बनाया था।

सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं निपुणं श्रुतिसागरम् जेतारं तरसारीणामजेयं शत्रुभिर्बलात्

He possessed all the auspicious marks. He was skilled and an ocean of learning. He was capable of winning speedily, but was incapable of being defeated by the forces of the enemy.

उसके पास सभी शुभ चिन्ह थे। वह कुशल और विद्या का सागर था। वह तेजी से जीतने में सक्षम था, लेकिन दुश्मन की ताकतों से पराजित होने में असमर्थ था।

दशाङ्गं यश्चतुष्पादमिष्वस्त्रं वेद तत्त्वतः साङ्गांश्च चतुरो वेदान्सम्यगाख्यानपञ्चमान्

He possessed knowledge about the science of fighting, with its four parts and ten divisions. He knew the four Veda-s and their aṅgas, with accounts as the fifth.

आराध्य त्र्यम्बकं यत्नाद्व्रतैरुग्रैर्महातपाः अयोनिजायामुत्पन्नो द्रोणेनायोनिजेन यः

Droṇa was not born in a womb. The immensely energetic one observed fierce and careful austerities, worshipping Tryambaka and obtained him through someone who was also not born in a womb.

द्रोण का जन्म गर्भ से नहीं हुआ था। अत्यधिक ऊर्जावान व्यक्ति ने उग्र और सावधानीपूर्वक तपस्या की, त्र्यंबक की पूजा की और उसे एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के माध्यम से प्राप्त किया जो गर्भ में पैदा नहीं हुआ था।

तमप्रतिमकर्माणं रूपेणासदृशं भुवि पारगं सर्वविद्यानां गुणार्णवमनिन्दितम् तमभ्येत्यात्मजस्तुभ्यमश्वत्थामानमब्रवीत्

His deeds and beauty were unmatched on earth. He was accomplished in all the forms of learning. He was unblemished and an ocean of qualities. He was immeasurable in his soul. Having approached this Aśvatthāma, he said,

यं पुरस्कृत्य सहिता युधि जेष्याम पाण्डवान् गुरुपुत्रोऽद्य सर्वेषामस्माकं परमा गतिः भवांस्तस्मान्नियोगात्ते कोऽस्तु सेनापतिर्मम

"O preceptor's son! For all of us, you are the supreme refuge. Whom should I appoint as a commander now? You should tell me. With him at the forefront, we will fight with the Pāṇḍava-s and defeat them."

"हे गुरु पुत्र! हम सभी के लिए, आप सर्वोच्च शरण हैं। अब मैं किसे सेनापति नियुक्त करूं? आप मुझे बताएं। उसे सबसे आगे रखकर हम पांडवों से लड़ेंगे और उन्हें हराएंगे।"

द्रौणिरुवाच अयं कुलेन वीर्येण तेजसा यशसा श्रिया सर्वैर्गुणैः समुदितः शल्यो नोऽस्तु चमूपतिः

Droṇa's son replied: "Let Śalya be the commander of our army. He possesses lineage, bravery, energy, fame, prosperity and all the qualities.

द्रोण के पुत्र ने उत्तर दिया: "शल्य को हमारी सेना का सेनापति बनने दो। उसके पास वंश, वीरता, ऊर्जा, प्रसिद्धि, समृद्धि और सभी गुण हैं।"

भागिनेयान्निजांस्त्यक्त्वा कृतज्ञोऽस्मानुपागतः महासेनो महाबाहुर्महासेन इवापरः

He has abandoned his sister's sons and has gratefully come to our side. He possesses a large army and is mighty-armed. He is like Mahāsena to the enemy.

उसने अपनी बहन के बेटों को त्याग दिया है और कृतज्ञतापूर्वक हमारे पक्ष में आ गया है। उसके पास एक बड़ी सेना है और वह शक्तिशाली हथियारों से लैस है। वह शत्रु के लिए महासेना के समान है।

एनं सेनापतिं कृत्वा नृपतिं नृपसत्तम शक्यः प्राप्तुं जयोऽस्माभिर्देवैः स्कन्दमिवाजितम्

O supreme among kings! Make that king the commander. We will then be able to obtain victory, like the triumphant gods after appointing Skānda."

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! उस राजा को सेनापति बनाओ. तब हम स्कंद को नियुक्त करने के बाद विजयी देवताओं की तरह विजय प्राप्त करने में सक्षम होंगे।"

तथोक्ते द्रोणपुत्रेण सर्व एव नराधिपाः परिवार्य स्थिताः शल्यं जयशब्दांश्च चक्रिरे युद्धाय च मतिं चक्रूरावेशं च परं ययुः

When Droṇa's son said this, all the lords of the earth surrounded Śalya and stationed themselves around him, proclaiming his victory. They set their minds on fighting and were filled with supreme delight.

ततो दुर्योधनः शल्यं भूमौ स्थित्वा रथे स्थितम् उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा रामभीष्मसमं रणे

From his chariot, Duryodhana alighted on the ground. He joined his hands in salutation and told Śalya, who was like Rāma and Bhīṣma in battle,

दुर्योधन अपने रथ से उतरकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा। उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर नमस्कार किया और शल्य से, जो युद्ध में राम और भीष्म के समान थे, कहा।

अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो मित्राणां मित्रवत्सल यत्र मित्रममित्रं वा परीक्षन्ते बुधा जनाः

"O one who is devoted to friends! The time has come for friendship. At such times, learned ones can differentiate between a friend and an enemy.

"हे मित्रों के प्रति समर्पित रहने वाले! मित्रता का समय आ गया है। ऐसे समय में विद्वान लोग मित्र और शत्रु के बीच अंतर कर सकते हैं।"

स भवानस्तु नः शूरः प्रणेता वाहिनीमुखे रणं च याते भवति पाण्डवा मन्दचेतसः भविष्यन्ति सहामात्याः पाञ्चालाश्च निरुद्यमाः

You are brave. Station yourself at the forefront of our army. When you advance in the battle, the evil-minded Pāṇḍava-s, with their advisers and the Pāñcāla-s, will lose enterprise."

आप बहादुर हैं. स्वयं को हमारी सेना में सबसे आगे तैनात करो। जब आप युद्ध में आगे बढ़ेंगे, तो बुरे दिमाग वाले पांडव, अपने सलाहकारों और पंचालों के साथ, साहस खो देंगे।"

शल्य उवाच यत्तु मां मन्यसे राजन्कुरुराज करोमि तत् त्वत्प्रियार्थं हि मे सर्वं प्राणा राज्यं धनानि च

Śalya replied: "O king! O king of the Kuru-s! I will accomplish the task you have thought for me. Everything that I possess, my life, my kingdom and my riches, is for your pleasure."

शल्य ने उत्तर दिया: "हे राजा! हे कुरु-राज! आपने मेरे लिए जो कार्य सोचा है, मैं उसे पूरा करूंगा। मेरे पास जो कुछ भी है, मेरा जीवन, मेरा राज्य और मेरा धन, वह सब आपकी खुशी के लिए है।"

दुर्योधन उवाच सेनापत्येन वरये त्वामहं मातुलातुलम् सोऽस्मान्पाहि युधां श्रेष्ठ स्कन्दो देवानिवाहवे

Duryodhana said: "O unmatched maternal uncle! I instate you as the commander. O foremost among warriors! Save us in this encounter, like Skānda saved the gods in battle.

दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे अद्वितीय मामा! मैं आपको सेनापति के रूप में नियुक्त करता हूं। हे योद्धाओं में अग्रणी! इस मुठभेड़ में हमारी रक्षा करें, जैसे स्कंद ने युद्ध में देवताओं की रक्षा की थी।"

अभिषिच्यस्व राजेन्द्र देवानामिव पावकिः जहि शत्रून्रणे वीर महेन्द्रो दानवानिव

O Indra among kings! I consecrate you, like the gods did to Pāvaki. O brave one! Slay the enemies in the battle, like the great Indra against the dānava-s."

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! मैं तुम्हारा अभिषेक करता हूँ, जैसे देवताओं ने पावकी का किया था। हे वीर! दानवों के विरुद्ध महान इन्द्र की तरह युद्ध में शत्रुओं को मार डालो।"
