वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्तृतीये दिवसे भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः स्नाताः शुक्लाम्बरधराः समये चरितव्रताः

Vaiśampāyana said: On the third day, the five Pāṇḍava brothers bathed themselves and donned white garments, having completed the pledge that they had made.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: तीसरे दिन, पांचों पांडव भाइयों ने अपना वचन पूरा करके स्नान किया और सफेद वस्त्र पहने।

युधिष्ठिरं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वाभरणभूषिताः अभिपद्मा यथा नागा भ्राजमाना महारथाः

Adorning themselves in ornaments, and with Yudhiṣṭhira at the forefront, the mahāratha-s were as resplendent as elephants marked with the signs of the lotus.

आभूषणों से सुसज्जित और सबसे आगे युधिष्ठिर को बैठाकर, महारथी कमल के चिन्हों से अंकित हाथियों के समान देदीप्यमान थे।

विराटस्य सभां गत्वा भूमिपालासनेष्वथ निषेदुः पावकप्रख्याः सर्वे धिष्ण्येष्विवाग्नयः

They went to Virāṭa's assembly hall and seated themselves on thrones meant for lords of the earth. They were as radiant as fires on sacrificial altars.

वे विराट के सभा भवन में गए और पृथ्वी के राजाओं के लिए बने सिंहासनों पर बैठ गए। वे यज्ञ वेदियों पर जलती अग्नि के समान दीप्तिमान थे।

तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु विराटः पृथिवीपतिः आजगाम सभां कर्तुं राजकार्याणि सर्वशः

While they were seated there, Virāṭa, lord of the earth, arrived at the assembly hall to perform all his royal duties.

जब वे वहां बैठे थे, पृथ्वी के स्वामी विराट, अपने सभी शाही कर्तव्यों को पूरा करने के लिए सभा कक्ष में पहुंचे।

श्रीमतः पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा ज्वलतः पावकानिव अथ मत्स्योऽब्रवीत्कङ्कं देवरूपमवस्थितम् मरुद्गणैरुपासीनं त्रिदशानामिवेश्वरम्

On seeing the handsome Pāṇḍava-s, blazing like fires, with Kaṅka seated there in the form of a god, like the lord of the thirty gods attended by the Marut-s, Mātsya told him,

अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित सुन्दर पाण्डवों को, कंक को देवता के रूप में, मरुतों सहित तीस देवताओं के स्वामी के समान बैठे हुए देखकर, मत्स्य ने उससे कहा,

स किलाक्षातिवापस्त्वं सभास्तारो मया कृतः अथ राजासने कस्मादुपविष्टोऽस्यलंकृतः

"I put you in charge of the dice and appointed you the official gamester. Why are you ornamented and why are you seated on the royal throne?"

"मैंने तुम्हें पासों का प्रभारी बनाया है और तुम्हें आधिकारिक जुआरी नियुक्त किया है। तुम अलंकृत क्यों हो और शाही सिंहासन पर क्यों बैठे हो?"

परिहासेप्सया वाक्यं विराटस्य निशम्य तत् स्मयमानोऽर्जुनो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत्

O king! On hearing Virāṭa's words, Arjuna laughed and spoke the following words.

हे राजा! विराट की बातें सुनकर अर्जुन हँसे और निम्नलिखित शब्द बोले।

इन्द्रस्याप्यासनं राजन्नयमारोढुमर्हति ब्रह्मण्यः श्रुतवांस्त्यागी यज्ञशीलो दृढव्रतः

"O king! This one deserves to be seated on Indra's throne. He has the qualities of a brāhmaṇa. He is learned in the sacred texts. He is generous. He is the performer of sacrifices. He is rigid in his vows.

"हे राजा! यह इंद्र के सिंहासन पर बैठने के योग्य है। इसमें एक ब्राह्मण के गुण हैं। वह पवित्र ग्रंथों में विद्वान है। वह उदार है। वह बलिदान देने वाला है। वह अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में कठोर है।

अयं कुरूणामृषभः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः अस्य कीर्तिः स्थिता लोके सूर्यस्येवोद्यतः प्रभा

He is a bull among the Kuru-s. He is Kuntī's son, Yudhiṣṭhira. His deeds are established on this earth, like the rays of the rising sun.

वह कुरुवंशियों में एक बैल है। वह कुंती के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर हैं। उनके कर्म उगते सूरज की किरणों की तरह इस धरती पर स्थापित हैं।

संसरन्ति दिशः सर्वा यशसोऽस्य गभस्तयः उदितस्येव सूर्यस्य तेजसोऽनु गभस्तयः

The rays of his fame wander in all directions, like the rays of the rising sun.

उनकी प्रसिद्धि की किरणें उगते सूर्य की किरणों की तरह सभी दिशाओं में घूमती हैं।

एनं दश सहस्राणि कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम् अन्वयुः पृष्ठतो राजन्यावदध्यावसत्कुरून्

O king! When he dwelt in the land of the Kuru-s, ten thousand powerful elephants used to follow him at the back.

हे राजा! जब वह कुरु देश में रहता था, तो दस हजार शक्तिशाली हाथी उसके पीछे-पीछे चलते थे।

त्रिंशदेनं सहस्राणि रथाः काञ्चनमालिनः सदश्वैरुपसंपन्नाः पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः सदा

Thirty thousand chariots and welltrained and handsome horses, with golden harnesses, always used to follow him from behind.

उसके पीछे से तीस हजार रथ और सुनहरी रस्सियों से सुसज्जित सुप्रशिक्षित एवं सुन्दर घोड़े सदैव उसके पीछे-पीछे चलते थे।

एनमष्टशताः सूताः सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः अस्तुवन्मागधैः सार्धं पुरा शक्रमिवर्षयः

There were eight hundred bards, with earrings studded with polished gems, together with minstrels chanting his praises, like riṣi-s praising Śākra earlier.

वहाँ आठ सौ भाट थे, जिनके कानों में चमकीली रत्नजड़ित बालियाँ थीं, साथ ही वादक उनकी स्तुति कर रहे थे, जैसे पहले ऋषि-मुनि शक्र की स्तुति करते थे।

एनं नित्यमुपासन्त कुरवः किंकरा यथा सर्वे च राजन्राजानो धनेश्वरमिवामराः

O king! Like the immortals wait on the lord of riches, the Kuru-s, and all the kings, waited on him, like servants.

हे राजा! जैसे अमर लोग धन के स्वामी की प्रतीक्षा करते हैं, उसी प्रकार कुरु और सभी राजा सेवकों की तरह उनकी प्रतीक्षा करते थे।

एष सर्वान्महीपालान्करमाहारयत्तदा वैश्यानिव महाराज विवशान्स्ववशानपि

O great king! All the lords of the earth offered him tribute then, like ordinary vaiśya-s.

हे महान राजा! तब सामान्य वैश्यों की तरह पृथ्वी के सभी राजाओं ने उन्हें श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की।

अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि स्नातकानां महात्मनाम् उपजीवन्ति राजानमेनं सुचरितव्रतम्

The king was excellent in his vows and eighty-eight thousand great-souled snātaka-s earned their living off him.

राजा अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में उत्कृष्ट था और अट्ठासी हजार महान आत्मा वाले स्नाटक उससे अपनी आजीविका कमाते थे।

एष वृद्धाननाथांश्च व्यङ्गान्पङ्गूंश्च मानवान् पुत्रवत्पालयामास प्रजा धर्मेण चाभिभो

O lord! In accordance with dharma, he protected his subjects like sons, the aged, the unprotected, the disabled and the crippled.

हे भगवान! धर्म के अनुसार, उन्होंने पुत्रों, वृद्धों, अरक्षितों, अशक्तों और अपंगों जैसी अपनी प्रजा की रक्षा की।

एष धर्मे दमे चैव क्रोधे चापि यतव्रतः महाप्रसादो ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च पार्थिवः

Such was his dharma, his self-control over anger and his carefulness in observing vows. He was extremely generous. He had the qualities of a brāhmaṇa. The lord of the earth was always truthful.

ऐसा था उनका धर्म, क्रोध पर उनका संयम और व्रतों के पालन में उनकी सावधानी। वह अत्यंत उदार थे। उनमें ब्राह्मण के गुण थे। पृथ्वी का स्वामी सदैव सच्चा था।

श्रीप्रतापेन चैतस्य तप्यते स सुयोधनः सगणः सह कर्णेन सौबलेनापि वा विभुः

The lord Suyodhana was tormented because of his prosperity and his power, together with his followers, Karṇa, Saubala and the others.

भगवान सुयोधन अपने अनुयायियों कर्ण, सौबल और अन्य लोगों के साथ अपनी समृद्धि और अपनी शक्ति के कारण बहुत परेशान थे।

न शक्यन्ते ह्यस्य गुणाः प्रसंख्यातुं नरेश्वर एष धर्मपरो नित्यमानृशंस्यश्च पाण्डवः

O lord of men! It is impossible to recount all his qualities. These are vested in the great king Pāṇḍava,

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! उनके सभी गुणों का वर्णन करना असंभव है। ये महान राजा पांडव में निहित हैं,

एवंयुक्तो महाराजः पाण्डवः पार्थिवर्षभः कथं नार्हति राजार्हमासनं पृथिवीपतिः

bull among the lords of the earth. Does such a king not deserve a seat that is meant for a lord of the earth?"

पृथ्वी के स्वामियों में बैल। क्या ऐसा राजा उस पद के लायक नहीं है जो पृथ्वी के स्वामी के लिए है?"
