वैशंपायन उवाच निर्याय नगराच्छूरा व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः त्रिगर्तानस्पृशन्मत्स्याः सूर्ये परिणते सति

Vaiśampāyana said: Emerging from the city, the brave and armed ones arranged themselves in battle formsations.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: शहर से निकलकर, बहादुर और सशस्त्र लोगों ने खुद को युद्ध संरचनाओं में व्यवस्थित किया।

ते त्रिगर्ताश्च मत्स्याश्च संरब्धा युद्धदुर्मदाः अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तो गोषु गृद्धा महाबलाः

The Mātsya-s encountered the Trigarta-s when the sun had gone down. The Trigarta-s and the Mātsya-s were powerful and irrepressible in battle.

जब सूर्य अस्त हो गया तो मत्स्यों का त्रिगर्तों से सामना हुआ। युद्ध में त्रिगर्त और मत्स्य शक्तिशाली और अजेय थे।

भीमाश्च मत्तमातङ्गास्तोमराङ्कुशचोदिताः ग्रामणीयैः समारूढाः कुशलैर्हस्तिसादिभिः

The immensely strong ones roared at each other in anger, eager to grasp the cattle. Brave ones, skilled in handling elephants, were ascended on elephants and goaded them with spikes and hooks.

अत्यधिक बलशाली लोग मवेशियों को पकड़ने के लिए उत्सुक होकर क्रोध से एक-दूसरे पर दहाड़ने लगे। हाथियों को संभालने में कुशल बहादुर लोगों को हाथियों पर चढ़ाया जाता था और उन्हें कीलों और कांटों से रोका जाता था।

तेषां समागमो घोरस्तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः देवासुरसमो राजन्नासीत्सूर्ये विलम्बति

There ensued a terrible and tumultuous fight, which made the body hair stand up. O king! As the sun went down, it was like that between the gods and the āsura-s.

वहाँ एक भयानक और घमासान लड़ाई शुरू हो गई, जिससे शरीर के बाल खड़े हो गए। हे राजा! जैसे ही सूर्य अस्त हुआ, यह देवताओं और असुरों के बीच की स्थिति बन गई।

उदतिष्ठद्रजो भौमं न प्रज्ञायत किंचन पक्षिणश्चापतन्भूमौ सैन्येन रजसावृताः

Dust arose from the ground and nothing could be seen. Covered with dust raised by the soldiers, birds fell down on the ground.

ज़मीन से धूल उठ गई और कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। सैनिकों द्वारा उठाई गई धूल से आच्छादित होकर पक्षी भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

इषुभिर्व्यतिसंयद्भिरादित्योऽन्तरधीयत खद्योतैरिव संयुक्तमन्तरिक्षं व्यराजत

The sun disappeared behind the thick shower of arrows that were released. The firmament was ablaze, as if with fireflies.

छोड़े गए बाणों की घनी बौछार के पीछे सूरज गायब हो गया। आकाश धधक रहा था, मानो जुगनुओं से।

रुक्मपृष्ठानि चापानि व्यतिषक्तानि धन्विनाम् पततां लोकवीराणां सव्यदक्षिणमस्यताम्

The bows of the archers were plated with gold. Those brave ones in the world shot with the right hand and the left and were smitten down.

धनुर्धारियों के धनुष सोने से मढ़े हुए थे। संसार के उन वीरों ने दाएँ और बाएँ हाथ से गोलियाँ चलाईं और धराशायी हो गए।

रथा रथैः समाजग्मुः पादातैश्च पदातयः सादिभिः सादिनश्चैव गजैश्चापि महागजाः

Chariots fought with chariots and infantry with infantry. Cavalry fought with cavalry and elephants with mighty elephants.

रथ रथों से और पैदल सेना पैदल सेना से युद्ध करती थी। घुड़सवार सेना घुड़सवार सेना से और हाथी शक्तिशाली हाथियों से लड़े।

असिभिः पट्टिशैः प्रासैः शक्तिभिस्तोमरैरपि संरब्धाः समरे राजन्निजघ्नुरितरेतरम्

O king! As they engaged in battle, they struck each other with swords, sharp spears, lances, spikes and javelins.

हे राजा! जैसे ही वे युद्ध में लगे, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे पर तलवारों, तेज़ भालों, भालों, कीलों और भालों से प्रहार किया।

निघ्नन्तः समरेऽन्योन्यं शूराः परिघबाहवः न शेकुरभिसंरब्धाः शूरान्कर्तुं पराङ्मुखान्

The brave ones possessed arms that were like clubs. They struck each other in that battle, but the brave ones were unable to vanquish the enemy heroes.

बहादुर लोगों के पास ऐसे हथियार थे जो क्लबों की तरह थे। उस युद्ध में उन्होंने एक-दूसरे पर प्रहार किया, लेकिन वीर शत्रु नायकों को परास्त करने में असमर्थ रहे।

कॢप्तोत्तरोष्ठं सुनसं कॢप्तकेशमलंकृतम् अदृश्यत शिरश्छिन्नं रजोध्वस्तं सकुण्डलम्

Severed heads could be seen, covered with dust, with mangled lips, but with the noses intact, ornamented and adorned with earrings and with the hair dressed.

कटे हुए सिर देखे जा सकते थे, धूल से ढके हुए थे, कटे हुए होंठ थे, लेकिन नाक बरकरार थी, आभूषण और बालियों से सजी हुई थी और बाल सजे हुए थे।

अदृश्यंस्तत्र गात्राणि शरैश्छिन्नानि भागशः शालस्कन्धनिकाशानि क्षत्रियाणां महामृधे

In that great battle, the bodies of kṣatriya-s could be seen there, shattered into many parts by the arrows, resembling the trunks of śala trees.

उस महान् संग्राम में क्षत्रियों के शरीर बाणों से अनेक भागों में टूटकर शाल वृक्ष के तनों के समान दिखाई दे रहे थे।

नागभोगनिकाशैश्च बाहुभिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः आकीर्णा वसुधा तत्र शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः

The earth was covered with heads wearing earrings and smeared with sandalwood, like the bodies of serpents.

पृथ्वी साँपों के शरीर के समान कुण्डल पहने हुए तथा चन्दन से पुते सिरों से ढकी हुई थी।

उपशाम्यद्रजो भौमं रुधिरेण प्रसर्पता कश्मलं प्राविशद्घोरं निर्मर्यादमवर्तत

The earth was covered with dust and the flow of blood made this subside. But the terrible and dreadful combat went on, without any restraint.

पृथ्वी धूल से ढँक गई और रक्त के प्रवाह ने इसे कम कर दिया। लेकिन भयानक और खौफनाक लड़ाई बिना किसी रोक-टोक के चलती रही।

शतानीकः शतं हत्वा विशालाक्षश्चतुःशतम् प्रविष्टौ महतीं सेनां त्रिगर्तानां महारथौ आर्च्छेतां बहुसंरब्धौ केशाकेशि नखानखि

Śatānīka killed one hundred. Viśālākṣa killed four hundred. Those mahāratha-s penetrated the large army of the Trigarta-s. They engaged in hand to hand, hair to hair and nail to nail combat.

शतानीक ने एक सौ को मार डाला। विशालाक्ष ने चार सौ को मार डाला। उन महारथियों ने त्रिगर्तों की विशाल सेना में प्रवेश किया। वे हाथ से हाथ, बाल से बाल और नाखून से नाखून तक लड़ाई में लगे रहे।

लक्षयित्वा त्रिगर्तानां तौ प्रविष्टौ रथव्रजम् जग्मतुः सूर्यदत्तश्च मदिराश्वश्च पृष्ठतः

On noticing the collection of chariots of the Trigarta-s, they penetrated with Sūryadatta at the front and Madirāśva at the back.

त्रिगर्त-एस के रथों के संग्रह को देखने पर, वे आगे सूर्यदत्त और पीछे मदिराश्व के साथ घुस गए।

विराटस्तत्र संग्रामे हत्वा पञ्चशतान्रथान् हयानां च शतान्यत्र हत्वा पञ्च महारथान्

Virāṭa destroyed five hundred chariots in that battle. He killed hundreds of horses and five mahāratha-s.

उस युद्ध में विराट ने पाँच सौ रथों को नष्ट कर दिया। उसने सैकड़ों घोड़ों और पाँच महारथों को मार डाला।

चरन्स विविधान्मार्गान्रथेषु रथयूथपः त्रिगर्तानां सुशर्माणमार्च्छद्रुक्मरथं रणे

Following different routes, that leader of charioteers penetrated that mās-s of chariots, until he encountered Susharma of Trigarta, mounted on a golden chariot, in that field of battle.

अलग-अलग मार्गों का अनुसरण करते हुए, रथों के उस नेता ने रथों के उस विशाल समूह को भेद दिया, जब तक कि युद्ध के मैदान में उसे सुनहरे रथ पर सवार त्रिगर्त के सुशर्मा का सामना नहीं करना पड़ा।

तौ व्यावहरतां तत्र महात्मानौ महाबलौ अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तौ गोष्ठे गोवृषभाविव

Those two great-souled and immensely strong ones struck each other, roaring at each other like bulls in a pen of cows.

वे दोनों महाबली और अत्यंत बलवान गाय के बाड़े में बैलों की भाँति एक दूसरे पर गरजते हुए एक दूसरे पर प्रहार करने लगे।

ततो रथाभ्यां रथिनौ व्यतियाय समन्ततः शरान्व्यसृजतां शीघ्रं तोयधारा घनाविव

Those charioteers circled each other on chariots. They swiftly discharged arrows, like clouds unleashing torrents of rain.

वे रथी रथों पर सवार होकर एक-दूसरे की परिक्रमा करते रहे। उन्होंने तेजी से बाण छोड़े, जैसे बादल मूसलाधार वर्षा करते हैं।

अन्योन्यं चातिसंरब्धौ विचेरतुरमर्षणौ कृतास्त्रौ निशितैर्बाणैरसिशक्तिगदाभृतौ

Intolerant and angry, skilled in use of weapons, they attacked each other with sharp arrows, swords, lances and clubs.

असहिष्णु और क्रोधी, हथियारों के इस्तेमाल में कुशल, वे एक-दूसरे पर तेज तीरों, तलवारों, भालों और लाठियों से हमला करने लगे।

ततो राजा सुशर्माणं विव्याध दशभिः शरैः पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिश्चास्य विव्याध चतुरो हयान्

Then the king pierced Susharma with ten arrows and each of his four horses with five arrows each.

तब राजा ने दस बाणों से सुशर्मा को और उसके चारों घोड़ों को पाँच-पाँच बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तथैव मत्स्यराजानं सुशर्मा युद्धदुर्मदः पञ्चाशता शितैर्बाणैर्विव्याध परमास्त्रवित्

But Susharma was irrepressible in battle and supreme in use of weapons. He struck the king of the Mātsya-s with fifty sharp arrows.

लेकिन सुशर्मा युद्ध में अजेय और शस्त्र प्रयोग में सर्वोच्च था। उसने पचास तीखे बाणों से मत्स्य राजा को घायल कर दिया।

ततः सैन्यं समावृत्य मत्स्यराजसुशर्मणोः नाभ्यजानंस्तदान्योन्यं प्रदोषे रजसावृते

In the evening, with everything covered in dust, the soldiers of the king of Mātsya and Susharma could not see each other.

शाम के समय, सब कुछ धूल से ढका होने के कारण, मत्स्य राजा और सुशर्मा के सैनिक एक दूसरे को नहीं देख सके।
