वैशंपायन उवाच भीष्मे तु संग्रामशिरो विहाय; पलायमाने धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रः उच्छ्रित्य केतुं विनदन्महात्मा; स्वयं विगृह्यार्जुनमाससाद

Vaiśampāyana said: When Bhīṣma had left the forefront of that battle and had run away, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's greatsouled son raised up his standard and himself advanced towards Arjuna.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब भीष्म उस युद्ध में सबसे आगे निकल कर भाग गए थे, तब धृतराष्ट्र के महान पुत्र ने अपना ध्वज उठाया और स्वयं अर्जुन की ओर बढ़े।

स भीमधन्वानमुदग्रवीर्यं; धनंजयं शत्रुगणे चरन्तम् आकर्णपूर्णायतचोदितेन; भल्लेन विव्याध ललाटमध्ये

Dhanañjayā, extremely valorous and wielder of the terrible bow, was roaming around in the midst of the enemy hordes. He drew his bow up to his ears and with an arrow pierced him in the middle of his forehead.

अत्यंत वीर और भयानक धनुषधारी धनंजय शत्रुदल के बीच में घूम रहे थे। उसने अपना धनुष उसके कानों तक खींच लिया और एक तीर से उसके माथे के बीच में छेद कर दिया।

स तेन बाणेन समर्पितेन; जाम्बूनदाभेन सुसंशितेन रराज राजन्महनीयकर्मा; यथैकपर्वा रुचिरैकशृङ्गः

The arrow's tip was extremely sharp and golden. O king! Struck by it, the performer of great deeds looked as beautiful as a mountain with a single peak.

तीर की नोक अत्यंत तीखी और सुनहरी थी। हे राजा! इससे प्रभावित होकर महान कर्म करने वाला वह व्यक्ति एक ही शिखर वाले पर्वत के समान सुंदर लगने लगा।

अथास्य बाणेन विदारितस्य; प्रादुर्बभूवासृगजस्रमुष्णम् सा तस्य जाम्बूनदपुष्पचित्रा; मालेव चित्राभिविराजते स्म

Pierced by the arrow, warm blood gushed out of the wound. The golden arrow was as beautiful as a flowery garland.

तीर लगने से घाव से गरम खून बह निकला। वह स्वर्ण बाण फूलों की माला के समान सुन्दर था।

स तेन बाणाभिहतस्तरस्वी; दुर्योधनेनोद्धतमन्युवेगः शरानुपादाय विषाग्निकल्पा;न्विव्याध राजानमदीनसत्त्वः

Struck by the arrow, he was angered and rushed at Duryodhana in wrath. He took out arrows that were like poison and fire and spiritedly pierced the king.

बाण लगने से वह क्रोधित हो गया और क्रोध में दुर्योधन पर टूट पड़ा। उसने विष और अग्नि के समान बाण निकाले और राजा को बेध दिया।

दुर्योधनश्चापि तमुग्रतेजाः; पार्थश्च दुर्योधनमेकवीरः अन्योन्यमाजौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ; समं समाजघ्नतुराजमीढौ

Duryodhana was extremely energetic and attacked Pārtha and the brave one attacked Duryodhana alone. Those two brave ones among men fought each other. They were both equal and were born in the lineage of Ājamīḍha.

दुर्योधन अत्यंत ऊर्जावान था और उसने पार्थ पर आक्रमण कर दिया और वीर ने अकेले ही दुर्योधन पर आक्रमण कर दिया। वे दोनों वीर मनुष्य आपस में युद्ध करने लगे। वे दोनों समान थे और अजमीढ़ के वंश में पैदा हुए थे।

ततः प्रभिन्नेन महागजेन; महीधराभेन पुनर्विकर्णः रथैश्चतुर्भिर्गजपादरक्षैः; कुन्तीसुतं जिष्णुमथाभ्यधावत्

Vikarṇa also rode on a gigantic and rutting elephant that was as large as a mountain and with four chariots protecting the elephant's legs, attacked Kuntī's son, Jiṣṇu.

विकर्ण भी एक विशाल और गड़गड़ाते हुए हाथी पर सवार हुआ, जो पहाड़ जितना बड़ा था और हाथी के पैरों की रक्षा करने वाले चार रथों के साथ, कुंती के पुत्र जिष्णु पर हमला किया।

तमापतन्तं त्वरितं गजेन्द्रं; धनंजयः कुम्भविभागमध्ये आकर्णपूर्णेन दृढायसेन; बाणेन विव्याध महाजवेन

That Indra among elephants swiftly bore down on him. Dhanañjayā grasped an extremely swift iron arrow. Drawing his bow up to his ears, he pierced it between its temples.

वह इन्द्र हाथियों के बीच तेजी से उस पर टूट पड़े। धनंजय ने एक अत्यंत वेगशाली लोहे का तीर पकड़ लिया। उसने अपने धनुष को कानों तक खींचकर उसकी कनपटी के बीच में छेद कर दिया।

पार्थेन सृष्टः स तु गार्ध्रपत्र; आ पुङ्खदेशात्प्रविवेश नागम् विदार्य शैलप्रवरप्रकाशं; यथाशनिः पर्वतमिन्द्रसृष्टः

The arrow released by Pārtha was shafted with the feathers of vultures. It penetrated the elephant, right up to the feathers. Like the vajra released by Indra shatters a mountain, it shattered the one that was like a mountain.

पार्थ द्वारा छोड़ा गया बाण गिद्ध के पंखों से लगा हुआ था। यह हाथी के पंख तक घुस गया। जैसे इंद्र द्वारा छोड़ा गया वज्र पर्वत को तोड़ देता है, वैसे ही उसने पर्वत के समान विशाल को भी चकनाचूर कर दिया।

शरप्रतप्तः स तु नागराजः; प्रवेपिताङ्गो व्यथितान्तरात्मा संसीदमानो निपपात मह्यां; वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य

The king of elephants was tormented by that arrow. Its limbs began to tremble and its soul was distressed. It slowly fell down on the ground, like the peak of a mountain that has been struck by a thunderbolt.

उस बाण से हाथियों का राजा अत्यंत पीड़ित हो गया। उसके अंग कांपने लगे और उसकी आत्मा व्यथित हो गयी। वह धीरे-धीरे जमीन पर गिर पड़ा, जैसे किसी पहाड़ की चोटी पर वज्र गिर गया हो।

निपातिते दन्तिवरे पृथिव्यां; त्रासाद्विकर्णः सहसावतीर्य तूर्णं पदान्यष्टशतानि गत्वा; विविंशतेः स्यन्दनमारुरोह

When the supreme of tusked ones fell down on the ground, Vikarṇa was terrified and dismounted swiftly. He fled for a full eight hundred paces and climbed onto Viviṃśati's chariot.

जब दन्तों में से सबसे ऊपर जमीन पर गिर गया, तो विकर्ण भयभीत हो गया और तेजी से उतर गया। वह पूरे आठ सौ कदम तक भागा और विविंशति के रथ पर चढ़ गया।

निहत्य नागं तु शरेण तेन; वज्रोपमेनाद्रिवराम्बुदाभम् तथाविधेनैव शरेण पार्थो; दुर्योधनं वक्षसि निर्बिभेद

Having slain the elephant with the arrow, like the vajra strikes down a mountain or a cloud, Pārtha used a similar arrow to pierce Duryodhana on the chest.

जैसे वज्र पर्वत या बादल को गिरा देता है, उसी प्रकार बाण से हाथी को मारकर पार्थ ने उसी बाण से दुर्योधन की छाती में छेद कर दिया।

ततो गजे राजनि चैव भिन्ने; भग्ने विकर्णे च सपादरक्षे गाण्डीवमुक्तैर्विशिखैः प्रणुन्ना;स्ते योधमुख्याः सहसापजग्मुः

The elephant and the king having both been pierced, Vikarṇa having been routed with the infantry that guarded him, the foremost among warriors were frightened of the arrows released from Gāṇḍīva, and swiftly fled.

हाथी और राजा दोनों घायल हो गए थे, विकर्ण अपनी रक्षा करने वाली पैदल सेना के साथ पराजित हो गया था, योद्धाओं में सबसे अग्रणी गाण्डीव द्वारा छोड़े गए बाणों से भयभीत हो गया और तेजी से भाग गया।

दृष्ट्वैव बाणेन हतं तु नागं; योधांश्च सर्वान्द्रवतो निशम्य रथं समावृत्य कुरुप्रवीरो; रणात्प्रदुद्राव यतो न पार्थः

Having seen that the elephant had been killed with an arrow and that all the warriors had run away, the foremost among Kuru-s retreated on his chariot from the field of battle and went to a spot where Pārtha was not present.

यह देखकर कि हाथी तीर से मारा गया है और सभी योद्धा भाग गए हैं, कुरु में सबसे प्रमुख अपने रथ पर युद्ध के मैदान से पीछे हट गया और उस स्थान पर चला गया जहां पार्थ मौजूद नहीं था।

तं भीमरूपं त्वरितं द्रवन्तं; दुर्योधनं शत्रुसहो निषङ्गी प्राक्ष्वेडयद्योद्धुमनाः किरीटी; बाणेन विद्धं रुधिरं वमन्तम्

But Kirīṭī was still eager to do battle. The destroyer of enemies addressed Duryodhana, who had been pierced by the arrow and was vomiting blood, and was swiftly trying to run away in terrible fright.

लेकिन किरीटी अभी भी युद्ध करने के लिए उत्सुक था। शत्रुओं के संहारक ने दुर्योधन को संबोधित किया, जो बाण से घायल हो गया था और खून की उल्टी कर रहा था, और भयानक भय के कारण तेजी से भागने की कोशिश कर रहा था।

अर्जुन उवाच विहाय कीर्तिं विपुलं यशश्च; युद्धात्परावृत्य पलायसे किम् न तेऽद्य तूर्याणि समाहतानि; यथावदुद्यान्ति गतस्य युद्धे

Arjuna said: "Renounce your deeds and great fame. Why are you running away in this way and refraining from battle? Why aren't trumpets being sounded for you now, the way they were sounded when you set out to do battle?

अर्जुन ने कहा: "अपने कर्मों और महान प्रसिद्धि को त्याग दो। तुम इस तरह से क्यों भाग रहे हो और युद्ध से विमुख हो रहे हो? अब तुम्हारे लिए तुरही क्यों नहीं बजाई जा रही हैं, जैसे कि जब तुम युद्ध के लिए निकले थे तब बजाई गई थीं?"

युधिष्ठिरस्यास्मि निदेशकारी; पार्थस्तृतीयो युधि च स्थिरोऽस्मि तदर्थमावृत्य मुखं प्रयच्छ; नरेन्द्रवृत्तं स्मर धार्तराष्ट्र

I obediently follow Yudhiṣṭhira's instructions. I am the third of the Pārtha-s and I am steadfast in battle. Therefore, turn around and show me your face. O son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra! Remember how Indra-s among men are supposed to act.

मैं युधिष्ठिर के निर्देशों का पालन करता हूं। मैं पार्थों में तीसरा हूं और युद्ध में दृढ़ हूं। इसलिए, घूमो और मुझे अपना चेहरा दिखाओ। हे धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र! याद रखें कि मनुष्यों में इंद्रों को कैसे कार्य करना चाहिए।

मोघं तवेदं भुवि नामधेयं; दुर्योधनेतीह कृतं पुरस्तात् न हीह दुर्योधनता तवास्ति; पलायमानस्य रणं विहाय

You have been named Duryodhana earlier, but that name will be uttered on earth in vain. There is no Duryodhana left in you. You are running away and refraining from battle.

पहले तुम्हारा नाम दुर्योधन रखा गया था, परन्तु वह नाम पृथ्वी पर व्यर्थ ही बोला जायेगा। आपमें कोई दुर्योधन नहीं बचा है. तुम भाग रहे हो और युद्ध से विमुख हो रहे हो।

न ते पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतो वा; पश्यामि दुर्योधन रक्षितारम् परैहि युद्धेन कुरुप्रवीर; प्राणान्प्रियान्पाण्डवतोऽद्य रक्ष

I do not see anyone to protect Duryodhana, either at the front or at the back. O foremost among Kuru-s! Therefore, run away from the battle. Protect your beloved life from the Pāṇḍava."

दुर्योधन की रक्षा के लिये मुझे न आगे, न पीछे कोई दिखाई देता है। हे कुरु-श्रेष्ठ! अत: युद्ध से भाग जाओ। पांडवों से अपने प्रिय जीवन की रक्षा करो।"
