Vaiśampāyana said: Having routed the enemy's soldiers and having conquered the cattle, Arjuna, the supreme of archers, in a desire to do that which brought him pleasure, advanced in Duryodhana's direction.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: शत्रु के सैनिकों को परास्त करने और मवेशियों पर विजय प्राप्त करने के बाद, धनुर्धारियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ अर्जुन, वह करने की इच्छा से जिससे उसे खुशी मिले, दुर्योधन की दिशा में आगे बढ़े।
The cattle ran away towards the Mātsya-s. Thinking that Kirīṭī had been successful and seeing him advance towards Duryodhana, the foremost among the Kuru-s swiftly descended on him.
मवेशी मत्स्य-स की ओर भाग गए। यह सोचकर कि किरीटी सफल हो गया है और उसे दुर्योधन की ओर बढ़ता देख, कुरु में सबसे अग्रणी तेजी से उसके पास आया।
"Use these golden reins to swiftly drive these white horses in that direction. Endeavour to quickly take me to where that mās-s of lionlike warriors is gathered.
"इन सफेद घोड़ों को तेजी से उस दिशा में ले जाने के लिए इन सुनहरी लगामों का उपयोग करें। मुझे शीघ्रता से उस स्थान पर ले जाने का प्रयास करें जहां शेर जैसे योद्धाओं का समूह इकट्ठा है।
That evil-minded son of the sūta wishes to fight me, like an elephant against another elephant. O prince! Duryodhana's favours have made him insolent. Take me to him."
वह दुष्ट सूतपुत्र उसी प्रकार मुझसे युद्ध करना चाहता है, जैसे एक हाथी दूसरे हाथी से। हे राजकुमार! दुर्योधन के उपकारों ने उसे उद्दंड बना दिया है। मुझे उसके पास ले चलो।”

Using the golden reins and driving the large horses that were as swift as the wind, Virāṭa's son broke through that army of charioteers and bore Pāṇḍava to the middle.
सोने की लगाम का उपयोग करके और हवा के समान तेज़ चलने वाले बड़े घोड़ों को चलाकर, विराट के पुत्र ने रथों की उस सेना को तोड़ दिया और पांडवों को बीच में धकेल दिया।
On seeing this, mahāratha Citrasenā, Saṃgrāmajit, Śatrusaha and Jayā advanced to help Karṇa and countered the advancing Bhārata with their arrows and spears.
यह देखकर, महारथ चित्रसेन, संग्रामजीत, शत्रुसह और जया कर्ण की मदद करने के लिए आगे बढ़े और अपने तीरों और भालों से आगे बढ़ते हुए भरत का मुकाबला किया।

With the flames of his bow and the scorching force of his arrows, that foremost among men burnt down the chariots of those bulls among the Kuru-s, like a fire consuming a forest.
नरश्रेष्ठ ने अपने धनुष की ज्वाला तथा बाणों की प्रचण्ड शक्ति से कौरवों के उन बैलों के रथों को उसी प्रकार जला डाला, जैसे आग जंगल को भस्म कर देती है।
A terrible battle ensued. Atiratha Vikarṇa, foremost among the Kuru-s, fiercely attacked Pārtha, Bhīmā's junior, from a chariot and showered down arrows on him.
भयानक युद्ध छिड़ गया. कौरवों में अग्रणी अतिरथ विकर्ण ने रथ से भीम के कनिष्ठ पार्थ पर भयंकर आक्रमण किया और उस पर बाणों की वर्षा की।
He drew the firmly stringed bow that was embellished with the best of gold and routed Vikarṇa. He shattered the standard that was on his chariot. With his standard destroyed, he fled.
उसने सर्वोत्तम सोने से अलंकृत मजबूत प्रत्यंचा वाले धनुष को खींचा और विकर्ण को पराजित कर दिया। उसने अपने रथ पर लगे मानक को तोड़ डाला। अपने मानक को नष्ट करके, वह भाग गया।
Unable to control his anger, wishing to accomplish superhuman deeds and seeing the oppression of the mās-s of soldiers, Śatruṃtapa showered down arrows on the scorcher of enemies. He hurled the nail of a tortoise at Pārtha.
अपने क्रोध को नियंत्रित करने में असमर्थ, अलौकिक कार्यों को पूरा करने की इच्छा से और बड़ी संख्या में सैनिकों के उत्पीड़न को देखकर, शत्रुताप ने शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले तीरों की वर्षा की। उसने पार्थ पर कछुए का नाखून फेंका।
Pierced by that atiratha king and immersed amidst the flags of the Kuru-s, he pierced Śatruṃtapa with five swift arrows and killed his charioteer with ten.
उस अतिरथ राजा को छेदकर और कुरु-ध्वजों के बीच डुबोकर, उसने पाँच वेगशाली बाणों से शत्रुन्तप को घायल कर दिया और दस बाणों से उसके सारथी को मार डाला।
Having been pierced by that bull among the Bhārata-s, with an arrow that sliced through the armour on his body, the king fell down dead on the ground, like a tree dislodged from the peak of a mountain by the wind.
भरतवंशियों के बीच उस बैल द्वारा उसके शरीर के कवच को भेदने वाले बाण से घायल होकर राजा हवा के कारण पर्वत की चोटी से उखड़े हुए वृक्ष की भाँति मृत होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।
Those brave bulls among charioteers were shattered in that battle by a braver bull among charioteers. They trembled, like a gigantic forest that shivers at the time when a gale strikes it.
रथियों में से एक शूरवीर बैल ने उस युद्ध में उन रथियों के वीर बैलों को चूर-चूर कर दिया। वे काँपने लगे, जैसे कोई विशाल जंगल आँधी आने पर काँप उठता हो।
Those foremost young ones among men were killed by Pārtha. In their fine garments, they seemed to be asleep on the ground. They were the granters of riches and were like Vāsava in their valour. But they were vanquished by Vāsava's son in battle. They were like grown elephants from the Himālaya-s, clad in armour made out of iron and gold.
पुरुषों में उन अग्रणी युवकों को पार्थ ने मार डाला। अपने सुन्दर वस्त्रों में वे भूमि पर सोये हुए प्रतीत होते थे। वे धन देने वाले थे और वीरता में वासव के समान थे। लेकिन वासव के पुत्र ने युद्ध में उन्हें परास्त कर दिया। वे हिमालय के विकसित हाथियों की तरह थे, जो लोहे और सोने से बने कवच पहने हुए थे।

Thus slaying the enemies on the field of battle, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva, foremost among men, began to roam around in that battlefield in different directions. He was like a forest fire at the end of the summer.
इस प्रकार युद्ध क्षेत्र में शत्रुओं का संहार करते हुए मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ गाण्डीव सेनापति उस युद्ध क्षेत्र में अलग-अलग दिशाओं में घूमने लगा। वह गर्मियों के अंत में जंगल की आग की तरह था।

At the time of spring, the wind that blows in the sky scatters the leaves. Like that, Kirīṭī scattered his enemies and the atiratha roamed around on the battlefield on his chariot.
वसंत ऋतु के समय आकाश में चलने वाली हवा पत्तों को बिखेर देती है। इस प्रकार, किरीटी ने अपने शत्रुओं को तितर-बितर कर दिया और अतिरथ अपने रथ पर युद्ध के मैदान में घूमता रहा।
On seeing his brother slain, Vaikartaṇa, the sūta's son, exhibited his valour, like a king of elephants displaying his tusks, or like a tiger attacking a large buffalo.
अपने भाई को मारा गया देखकर सूत के पुत्र वैकर्तन ने अपनी वीरता का प्रदर्शन किया, जैसे हाथियों का राजा अपने दाँत दिखा रहा हो, या जैसे कोई बाघ एक बड़े भैंसे पर हमला कर रहा हो।

विव्याध गात्रेषु हयांश्च सर्वा;न्विराटपुत्रं च शरैर्निजघ्ने
Vaikartaṇa attacked Pāṇḍava with twelve arrows. He pierced the bodies of all the horses and that of Virāṭa's son with those arrows.
वैकर्तन ने बारह बाणों से पांडव पर आक्रमण किया। उन्होंने उन बाणों से सभी घोड़ों और विराट के पुत्र के शरीर को छलनी कर दिया।

स हस्तिनेवाभिहतो गजेन्द्रः; प्रगृह्य भल्लान्निशितान्निषङ्गात्
आकर्णपूर्णं च धनुर्विकृष्य; विव्याध बाणैरथ सूतपुत्रम्
It was like a king among elephants being struck by an elephant. He took out sharp arrows from his quiver and stretching the string of the bow right up to his ear, pierced the body of the sūta's son with his arrows.
यह वैसा ही था जैसे हाथियों के बीच एक राजा को हाथी ने मार दिया हो। उन्होंने अपने तरकश से तीखे बाण निकाले और धनुष की प्रत्यंचा को कान तक खींचकर अपने बाणों से सूतपुत्र के शरीर को बींध डाला।
With arrows unleashed like lightning from his bow, the destroyer of enemies pierced him in battle, in the arms, the thighs, the head, the forehead, the neck and in all the parts of the chariot.
युद्ध में शत्रुसंहारक ने अपने धनुष से बिजली के समान छोड़े हुए बाणों से उसकी भुजाओं, जाँघों, सिर, मस्तक, गर्दन और रथ के सभी अंगों को घायल कर दिया।
Thus wounded by the arrows shot by Pārtha, and scorched by Pāṇḍava's arrows, like a swift elephant that has been defeated by another elephant, Vaikartaṇa fled from the forefront of the battle.
इस प्रकार पार्थ द्वारा चलाये गये बाणों से घायल और पाण्डवों के बाणों से झुलसे हुए वैकर्तन दूसरे हाथी से पराजित हो गये तेज हाथी की भाँति युद्ध में सबसे आगे भाग गये।
