वैशंपायन उवाच अथ संगम्य सर्वे तु कौरवाणां महारथाः अर्जुनं सहिता यत्ताः प्रत्ययुध्यन्त भारत

Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the mahāratha Kaurava-s now got together and counter-attacked Arjuna with determination.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अब सभी महारथी कौरव एकजुट हो गए और अर्जुन पर दृढ़ संकल्प के साथ जवाबी हमला किया।

स सायकमयैर्जालैः सर्वतस्तान्महारथान् प्राच्छादयदमेयात्मा नीहार इव पर्वतान्

But the one whose soul cannot be measured covered the mahāratha-s everywhere with showers of arrows, like mountains shrouded with fog.

परन्तु जिसकी आत्मा का माप नहीं किया जा सकता, उसने कोहरे से ढके हुए पर्वतों के समान महारथियों को सर्वत्र बाणों की वर्षा से ढक दिया।

नदद्भिश्च महानागैर्हेषमाणैश्च वाजिभिः भेरीशङ्खनिनादैश्च स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत्

The giant elephants trumpeted. The horses neighed. The kettledrums and conch shells resounded. A terrible tumult arose.

विशाल हाथी चिंघाड़ने लगे। घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे। ढोल और शंख गूंज उठे। भयंकर कोलाहल मच गया।

नराश्वकायान्निर्भिद्य लोहानि कवचानि च पार्थस्य शरजालानि विनिष्पेतुः सहस्रशः

Piercing the bodies of men and horses, slicing through iron armour, Pārtha's shower of arrows struck in thousands.

पार्थ के बाणों की वर्षा ने मनुष्यों और घोड़ों के शरीरों को विदीर्ण करते हुए, लोहे के कवचों को विदीर्ण करते हुए हजारों की संख्या में बाणों की वर्षा कर दी।

त्वरमाणः शरानस्यन्पाण्डवः स बभौ रणे मध्यंदिनगतोऽर्चिष्माञ्शरदीव दिवाकरः

Pārtha swiftly strode and shot arrows in that battle, ablaze like the resplendent autumn sun at midday.

पार्थ ने उस युद्ध में तेजी से आगे बढ़ते हुए बाण चलाए, जो मध्याह्न के देदीप्यमान शरद ऋतु के सूर्य के समान प्रज्वलित थे।

उपप्लवन्त वित्रस्ता रथेभ्यो रथिनस्तदा सादिनश्चाश्वपृष्ठेभ्यो भूमौ चापि पदातयः

Struck by terror, the charioteers leapt down from their chariots and the cavalry from their horses. The infantry began to flee on the ground.

भय के मारे रथी अपने रथों से और घुड़सवार अपने घोड़ों से कूद पड़े। पैदल सेना ज़मीन पर भागने लगी।

शरैः संताड्यमानानां कवचानां महात्मनाम् ताम्रराजतलोहानां प्रादुरासीन्महास्वनः

When the greatsouled one's arrows pierced the armour, made of copper, silver and iron, there was a mighty roar.

जब महान आत्मा के बाणों ने तांबे, चांदी और लोहे से बने कवच को छेद दिया, तो एक शक्तिशाली गर्जना हुई।

छन्नमायोधनं सर्वं शरीरैर्गतचेतसाम् गजाश्वसादिभिस्तत्र शितबाणात्तजीवितैः

The entire battlefield was strewn with bodies of those who had lost their senses, and with elephants, horses and other animals which had been robbed of their lives by the sharp arrows.

संपूर्ण युद्धक्षेत्र उन लोगों के शवों से बिखरा हुआ था जो अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो चुके थे, और हाथियों, घोड़ों और अन्य जानवरों से बिखरा हुआ था, जिनके प्राण तीखे बाणों द्वारा छीन लिए गए थे।

रथोपस्थाभिपतितैरास्तृता मानवैर्मही प्रनृत्यदिव संग्रामे चापहस्तो धनंजयः

The earth was covered with the corpses of those who had fallen down from their stations on the chariots. Dhanañjayā seemed to be dancing in that battle, with a bow in his hand.

पृथ्वी उन लोगों की लाशों से ढकी हुई थी जो रथों पर से अपने स्थानों पर गिर पड़े थे। ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था जैसे धनंजय हाथ में धनुष लेकर युद्ध में नृत्य कर रहे हों।

श्रुत्वा गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः त्रस्तानि सर्वभूतानि व्यगच्छन्त महाहवात्

On hearing Gāṇḍīva's twang, like the roar of the thunder, all the beings were frightened and fled from the great field of battle.

वज्र की गर्जना के समान गाण्डीव की टंकार सुनकर सभी प्राणी भयभीत हो गये और युद्ध के विशाल क्षेत्र से भाग गये।

कुण्डलोष्णीषधारीणि जातरूपस्रजानि च पतितानि स्म दृश्यन्ते शिरांसि रणमूर्धनि

The fallen heads could be seen in the forefront of that battle, with earrings and headdresses embellished with gold.

गिरे हुए सिरों को उस युद्ध में सबसे आगे देखा जा सकता था, उनके कानों में बालियाँ और सोने से सजी हुई टोपी थी।

विशिखोन्मथितैर्गात्रैर्बाहुभिश्च सकार्मुकैः सहस्ताभरणैश्चान्यैः प्रच्छन्ना भाति मेदिनी

The earth was strewn with bodies that had been destroyed by the arrows, with the arms holding bows and the hands decorated with ornaments.

बाणों से नष्ट हुए शरीरों से, धनुष धारण करने वाली भुजाओं से तथा आभूषणों से सुशोभित हाथों से पृथ्वी बिखरी हुई थी।

शिरसां पात्यमानानामन्तरा निशितैः शरैः अश्मवृष्टिरिवाकाशादभवद्भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Because the heads were struck down with sharp arrows, it seemed as if a shower of rocks had fallen down from the sky.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! क्योंकि सिरों पर तीखे बाणों से प्रहार किया गया था, ऐसा प्रतीत होता था मानो आकाश से चट्टानों की वर्षा हो रही हो।

दर्शयित्वा तथात्मानं रौद्रं रुद्रपराक्रमः अवरुद्धश्चरन्पार्थो दशवर्षाणि त्रीणि च क्रोधाग्निमुत्सृजद्घोरं धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवः

Having displayed his terrible self, Pārtha, whose valour was terrible, roamed around, after having been restrained for thirteen years. The brave Pāṇḍava unleashed the anger of his wrath on the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

तेरह वर्षों तक संयमित रहने के बाद भयंकर पराक्रम दिखाने वाला पार्थ अपना भयंकर स्वरूप प्रदर्शित करके इधर-उधर घूमता रहा। वीर पांडव ने धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों पर अपना क्रोध प्रकट किया।

तस्य तद्दहतः सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा चैव पराक्रमम् सर्वे शान्तिपरा योधा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः

On witnessing his valour as he burnt down the soldiers, all the warriors sought peace, while Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son looked on.

जब उसने सैनिकों को जला डाला तो उसकी वीरता को देखकर, सभी योद्धा शांति की तलाश में थे, जबकि धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र देखते रह गए।

वित्रासयित्वा तत्सैन्यं द्रावयित्वा महारथान् अर्जुनो जयतां श्रेष्ठः पर्यवर्तत भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having terrified the soldiers and routed the mahāratha-s, Arjuna, foremost among victorious ones, roamed around.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सैनिकों को भयभीत करने और महारथियों को परास्त करने के बाद विजयी योद्धाओं में अग्रणी अर्जुन इधर-उधर घूमते रहे।

प्रावर्तयन्नदीं घोरां शोणितौघतरङ्गिणीम् अस्थिशैवलसंबाधां युगान्ते कालनिर्मिताम्

He made a terrible river flow. Its current was made out of blood. The moss was made out of bones. It was as if destiny had fashioned it at the end of an erā.

उसने एक भयानक नदी बहा दी। इसकी धारा रक्त से बनी थी। काई हड्डियों से बनी होती थी। यह ऐसा था मानो नियति ने इसे एक युग के अंत में गढ़ा हो।

शरचापप्लवां घोरां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम् महारथमहाद्वीपां शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिस्वनाम् चकार महतीं पार्थो नदीमुत्तरशोणिताम्

There was a terrible flow of bows and arrows. The mud was made out of flesh and blood. The great chariots were like giant islands. There was the roar of conch shells and drums. Thus Pārtha created a giant river of blood that was difficult to cross.

धनुष-बाणों की भयंकर वर्षा होने लगी। मिट्टी मांस और रक्त से बनी थी। बड़े-बड़े रथ विशाल द्वीपों के समान थे। शंख और नगाड़ों की गड़गड़ाहट होने लगी। इस प्रकार पार्थ ने रक्त की एक विशाल नदी उत्पन्न कर दी जिसे पार करना कठिन था।

आददानस्य हि शरान्संधाय च विमुञ्चतः विकर्षतश्च गाण्डीवं न किंचिद्दृश्यतेऽन्तरम्

No one could make out when he affixed his arrows and released them, or when he drew the Gāṇḍīva, because no gap could be discerned.

कोई भी यह नहीं जान सका कि उसने कब अपने तीर लगाए और कब छोड़े, या कब उसने गांडीव निकाला, क्योंकि कोई अंतर नहीं देखा जा सका।
