वैशंपायन उवाच उत्तरं सारथिं कृत्वा शमीं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् आयुधं सर्वमादाय ततः प्रायाद्धनंजयः

Vaiśampāyana said: Having made Uttarā his charioteer and having circumambulated the śamī tree, Dhanañjayā gathered all his weapons and marched out.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: उत्तरा को अपना सारथी बनाकर और शमी वृक्ष की परिक्रमा करने के बाद, धनंजय ने अपने सभी हथियार एकत्र किए और बाहर निकल गए।

ध्वजं सिंहं रथात्तस्मादपनीय महारथः प्रणिधाय शमीमूले प्रायादुत्तरसारथिः

The mahāratha took down the banner with the lion and placed it below the śamī tree. He rode out with Uttarā as the charioteer.

महारथी ने सिंह सहित ध्वजा उतारकर शमी वृक्ष के नीचे रख दी। वह उत्तरा को सारथी बनाकर निकले।

दैवीं मायां रथे युक्त्वा विहितां विश्वकर्मणा काञ्चनं सिंहलाङ्गूलं ध्वजं वानरलक्षणम्

He hoisted on the chariot the golden banner with the mark of a monkey with the tail of a lion, one created with divine illusion by Viśvakarma.

उन्होंने रथ पर सिंह की पूँछ वाले बन्दर के चिन्ह वाला स्वर्ण ध्वज फहराया, जिसे विष्णुकर्मा ने दिव्य माया से बनाया था।

मनसा चिन्तयामास प्रसादं पावकस्य च स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा ध्वजे भूतान्यचोदयत्

He thought of the favours of the fire god. Having divined his thoughts, he instructed those beings to be on the flag.

उसने अग्नि देवता के उपकारों के बारे में सोचा। अपने विचारों को दिव्य बनाकर, उन्होंने उन प्राणियों को ध्वज पर रहने का निर्देश दिया।

सपताकं विचित्राङ्गं सोपासङ्गं महारथः रथमास्थाय बीभत्सुः कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः

Mahāratha Bībhatsu Kaunteya Śvetavāhana was established on the colourful chariot, with a flag and quivers.

महारथ बिभत्सु कौन्तेय श्वेतवाहन को ध्वज और तरकश के साथ रंगीन रथ पर स्थापित किया गया था।

बद्धासिः सतनुत्राणः प्रगृहीतशरासनः ततः प्रायादुदीचीं स कपिप्रवरकेतनः

He donned his wrist guards and grasped his bow and arrows. With the supreme of monkeys on his banner, he set out in a northern direction.

उसने अपनी कलाई पर पहरा लगा लिया और अपने धनुष और बाण पकड़ लिए। वह अपने ध्वज पर वानरों की सेना लेकर उत्तरी दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा।

स्वनवन्तं महाशङ्खं बलवानरिमर्दनः प्राधमद्बलमास्थाय द्विषतां लोमहर्षणम्

The strong one, the destroyer of enemies, blew powerfully on his deep-sounding and large conch shell and this made the body hair of his enemies stand up.

शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले बलवान ने अपने गहरे ध्वनि वाले और बड़े शंख को शक्तिशाली तरीके से बजाया और इससे उसके दुश्मनों के शरीर के बाल खड़े हो गए।

ततस्ते जवना धुर्या जानुभ्यामगमन्महीम् उत्तरश्चापि संत्रस्तो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्

At that sound, the swift horses knelt down on the ground. Uttarā was terrified and sat down on the chariot.

उस आवाज़ पर, तेज़ घोड़े ज़मीन पर घुटनों के बल बैठ गए। उत्तरा भयभीत होकर रथ पर बैठ गयी।

संस्थाप्य चाश्वान्कौन्तेयः समुद्यम्य च रश्मिभिः उत्तरं च परिष्वज्य समाश्वासयदर्जुनः

Kaunteya Arjuna grasped the reins and made the horses stand up. He embraced and comforted Uttarā and said,

कौन्तेय अर्जुन ने लगाम पकड़कर घोड़ों को खड़ा कर दिया। उन्होंने उत्तरा को गले लगाया और सांत्वना देते हुए कहा,

मा भैस्त्वं राजपुत्राग्र्य क्षत्रियोऽसि परंतप कथं पुरुषशार्दूल शत्रुमध्ये विषीदसि

"O foremost among princes! Do not be frightened. O scorcher of enemies! You are a kṣatriya. O tiger among men! Why are you despondent in the midst of the enemy?

"हे राजकुमारों में श्रेष्ठ! भयभीत मत हो। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! तुम क्षत्रिय हो। हे मनुष्यों में व्याघ्र! तुम शत्रुओं के बीच में निराश क्यों हो?

श्रुतास्ते शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः कुञ्जराणां च नदतां व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम्

You have heard the sounds of conch shells before, as well as the loud sounds of kettle drums and the roar of elephants when they are stationed in battle formations in armies.

आपने पहले भी शंखों की आवाज सुनी होगी, साथ ही केतली के ढोल की तेज आवाज और हाथियों की दहाड़ भी सुनी होगी जब वे सेनाओं में युद्ध संरचनाओं में तैनात होते हैं।

स त्वं कथमिहानेन शङ्खशब्देन भीषितः विषण्णरूपो वित्रस्तः पुरुषः प्राकृतो यथा

Why are you then so frightened by the sound of the conch shell? Why is your form so despondent and why are you so terrified, as if you are an ordinary man?"

फिर आप शंख की ध्वनि से इतने भयभीत क्यों हो जाते हैं? तुम्हारा रूप इतना उदास क्यों है और तुम इतने भयभीत क्यों हो, मानो कोई साधारण मनुष्य हो?”

उत्तर उवाच श्रुता मे शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः कुञ्जराणां च निनदा व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम्

Uttarā replied: "I have heard the sounds of conch shells and the loud sounds of kettle drums, and also the roars of elephants when they are stationed in battle formations in armies.

उत्तरा ने उत्तर दिया: "मैंने शंखों की आवाज़ और केतली ड्रम की तेज़ आवाज़ सुनी है, और जब हाथियों को सेनाओं में युद्ध संरचनाओं में तैनात किया जाता है तो उनकी दहाड़ भी सुनी है।

नैवंविधः शङ्खशब्दः पुरा जातु मया श्रुतः ध्वजस्य चापि रूपं मे दृष्टपूर्वं न हीदृशम् धनुषश्चैव निर्घोषः श्रुतपूर्वो न मे क्वचित्

But never before, have I heard the sound of a conch shell like this. Never before, have I seen a banner like this. Never before, have I heard the sound of a bow twanging like this.

परंतु मैंने पहले कभी इस प्रकार शंख की ध्वनि नहीं सुनी थी। मैंने पहले कभी इस तरह का बैनर नहीं देखा।' मैंने पहले कभी धनुष की ऐसी टंकार की ध्वनि नहीं सुनी थी।

अस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन धनुषो निस्वनेन च रथस्य च निनादेन मनो मुह्यति मे भृशम्

My mind is terribly agitated from the sound of this conch shell, the twang of the bow and the roar of the chariot.

इस शंख की ध्वनि, धनुष की टंकार तथा रथ की गर्जना से मेरा मन अत्यंत व्याकुल हो गया है।

व्याकुलाश्च दिशः सर्वा हृदयं व्यथतीव मे ध्वजेन पिहिताः सर्वा दिशो न प्रतिभान्ति मे गाण्डीवस्य च शब्देन कर्णौ मे बधिरीकृतौ

I have lost sense of all the directions and my heart is trembling. The banner has covered everything and the directions are no longer evident to me. The sound of the Gāṇḍīva has deafened my ears."

मुझे सभी दिशाओं का ज्ञान नहीं रह गया है और मेरा हृदय कांप रहा है। बैनर ने सब कुछ ढक दिया है और दिशा-निर्देश अब मुझे स्पष्ट नहीं दिख रहे हैं। गाण्डीव की ध्वनि ने मेरे कान बहरे कर दिये हैं।"

अर्जुन उवाच एकान्ते रथमास्थाय पद्भ्यां त्वमवपीडय दृढं च रश्मीन्संयच्छ शङ्खं ध्मास्याम्यहं पुनः

Arjuna said: "Stand firmly on this chariot and to one side. Place your feet firmly on it. Grasp the reins firmly. I am going to blow the conch shell again."

अर्जुन ने कहा: "इस रथ पर और एक तरफ मजबूती से खड़े हो जाओ। अपने पैर इस पर मजबूती से रखो। लगाम को मजबूती से पकड़ लो। मैं फिर से शंख बजाने जा रहा हूं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच तस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन रथनेमिस्वनेन च गाण्डीवस्य च घोषेण पृथिवी समकम्पत

Vaiśampāyana said: The earth trembled from the sound of the conch shell, the roar of the chariot and the thunder of the Gāṇḍīva.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: शंख की ध्वनि, रथ की गर्जना और गांडीव की गड़गड़ाहट से पृथ्वी कांप उठी।

द्रोण उवाच यथा रथस्य निर्घोषो यथा शङ्ख उदीर्यते कम्पते च यथा भूमिर्नैषोऽन्यः सव्यसाचिनः

Droṇa said: "From the roar of the chariot, the blast of the conch shell and the trembling of the earth, it can be no one other than Savyasachi.

द्रोण ने कहा: "रथ की गर्जना, शंख की ध्वनि और पृथ्वी के कंपन से, यह सव्यसाची के अलावा और कोई नहीं हो सकता।

शस्त्राणि न प्रकाशन्ते न प्रहृष्यन्ति वाजिनः अग्नयश्च न भासन्ते समिद्धास्तन्न शोभनम्

Our weapons are no longer shining and our horses have lost their spirits. Although there is kindling, the fires do not blaze. This does not augur well.

हमारे हथियार अब चमक नहीं रहे हैं और हमारे घोड़ों ने अपना उत्साह खो दिया है। हालाँकि आग जलती रहती है, फिर भी आग नहीं भड़कती। यह शुभ संकेत नहीं है.

प्रत्यादित्यं च नः सर्वे मृगा घोरप्रवादिनः ध्वजेषु च निलीयन्ते वायसास्तन्न शोभनम् शकुनाश्चापसव्या नो वेदयन्ति महद्भयम्

All the animals are running towards the sun, wailing terribly. The crows are alighting on our standards. This does not augur well. The vultures are flying towards our left and this portends great danger.

सभी जानवर भयंकर त्राहि-त्राहि करते हुए सूर्य की ओर भाग रहे हैं। कौवे हमारे मानकों पर उतर रहे हैं. यह शुभ संकेत नहीं है. गिद्ध हमारी बायीं ओर उड़ रहे हैं और यह बड़े खतरे का संकेत है।

गोमायुरेष सेनाया रुवन्मध्येऽनुधावति अनाहतश्च निष्क्रान्तो महद्वेदयते भयम् भवतां रोमकूपाणि प्रहृष्टान्युपलक्षये

The jackals are howling and running around in the midst of the army and are escaping uninjured. This portends great danger. I can see that your body hair is standing up.

गीदड़ चिल्ला रहे हैं और सेना के बीच में इधर-उधर भाग रहे हैं और सुरक्षित बच रहे हैं। यह बड़े खतरे का पूर्वाभास देता है। मैं देख रहा हूँ कि तुम्हारे शरीर के बाल खड़े हो गये हैं।

पराभूता च वः सेना न कश्चिद्योद्धुमिच्छति विवर्णमुखभूयिष्ठाः सर्वे योधा विचेतसः गाः संप्रस्थाप्य तिष्ठामो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः

The soldiers have already been conquered and no one wishes to fight. Their faces are pale and all the warriors have lost their senses. Let us let the cattle go. Let us stand here, armed and arranged in battle formations."

सैनिकों को पहले ही जीत लिया गया है और कोई भी लड़ना नहीं चाहता है। उनके चेहरे पीले पड़ गये हैं और सभी योद्धा अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे हैं। आइए हम मवेशियों को जाने दें। आइए हम यहां सशस्त्र और युद्ध संरचनाओं में व्यवस्थित होकर खड़े हों।"
