संजय उवाच पातिते युधि दुर्धर्षे मद्रराजे महारथे तावकास्तव पुत्राश्च प्रायशो विमुखाभवन्

Sañjaya said: The unassailable mahāratha, the king of Madra, was brought down in the battle. Those on your side, and your sons, generally retreated.

संजय ने कहा: अजेय महारथी, मद्र के राजा, युद्ध में मारे गये। आपके पक्ष के लोग और आपके बेटे आम ​​तौर पर पीछे हट गए।

वणिजो नावि भिन्नायां यथागाधेऽप्लवेऽर्णवे अपारे पारमिच्छन्तो हते शूरे महात्मनि

They were like merchants whose boats had been shattered, so that they were without a raft on the fathomless ocean.

O king! There was no one who could rally the soldiers, nor any valour among them. When Śalya was killed, there was no warrior who could resort to his own intelligence.

हे राजा! न तो सैनिकों को एकजुट करने वाला कोई था, न ही उनमें कोई वीरता थी। जब शल्य मारे गए, तो कोई भी योद्धा ऐसा नहीं था जो अपनी बुद्धि का सहारा ले सके।

भीष्मे द्रोणे च निहते सूतपुत्रे च भारत यद्दुःखं तव योधानां भयं चासीद्विशां पते तद्भयं स च नः शोको भूय एवाभ्यवर्तत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O lord of the earth! When Bhīṣma, Droṇa and the son of a sūta were killed, the warriors on your side suffered from sorrow and fear.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! जब भीष्म, द्रोण और सूतपुत्र मारे गये, तो आपके पक्ष के योद्धा दुःख और भय से पीड़ित हो गये।

निराशाश्च जये तस्मिन्हते शल्ये महारथे हतप्रवीरा विध्वस्ता विकृत्ताश्च शितैः शरैः मद्रराजे हते राजन्योधास्ते प्राद्रवन्भयात्

That grief and terror manifested itself again. When mahāratha Śalya was killed, all hope of victory was given up. The foremost of brave ones were slain and destroyed, mangled by sharp arrows. O king! When the king of Madra was slain, the warriors fled.

वह दुःख और आतंक फिर से प्रकट हो गया। जब महारथी शल्य मारे गए, तो जीत की सारी आशा छोड़ दी गई। बड़े-बड़े वीर तीक्ष्ण बाणों से क्षत-विक्षत होकर मारे गये और नष्ट हो गये। हे राजा! जब मद्र का राजा मारा गया तो योद्धा भाग गये।

अश्वानन्ये गजानन्ये रथानन्ये महारथाः आरुह्य जवसंपन्नाः पादाताः प्राद्रवन्भयात्

Some of the mahāratha-s resorted to horses, others to elephants, and still others to chariots. They speedily ascended on these, or fled on foot.

कुछ महारथियों ने घोड़ों का सहारा लिया, कुछ ने हाथियों का, और कुछ ने रथों का। वे तेजी से इन पर चढ़ गए, या पैदल ही भाग गए।

द्विसाहस्राश्च मातङ्गा गिरिरूपाः प्रहारिणः संप्राद्रवन्हते शल्ये अङ्कुशाङ्गुष्ठचोदिताः

There were two thousand elephants, accomplished in striking. They were like mountains. When Śalya was killed, goaded by goads and toes, they ran away.

O best among the Bhārata lineage! In the encounter, those on your side fled in different directions. They were seen to run away. They sighed and were afflicted by the arrows.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! मुठभेड़ में आपके पक्ष के लोग अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गये। वे भागते नजर आये. उन्होंने आह भरी और बाणों से पीड़ित हो गये।

तान्प्रभग्नान्द्रुतान्दृष्ट्वा हतोत्साहान्पराजितान् अभ्यद्रवन्त पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवाश्च जयैषिणः

On seeing that they were shattered and running away, vanquished and bereft of enthusiasm, the Pāñcāla-s and Pāṇḍava-s attacked them, desiring victory.

यह देखकर कि वे चूर-चूर हो गए हैं और भाग रहे हैं, परास्त हो गए हैं और उत्साह से रहित हो गए हैं, पंचाल और पांडवों ने जीत की इच्छा से उन पर हमला कर दिया।

बाणशब्दरवश्चापि सिंहनादश्च पुष्कलः शङ्खशब्दश्च शूराणां दारुणः समपद्यत

They created a whizzing sound with their arrows and roared loudly, like lions. The brave ones blew fiercely on their conch shells.

उन्होंने अपने बाणों से घर्र-घर्र की ध्वनि उत्पन्न की और सिंह के समान जोर से दहाड़ने लगे। वीरों ने जमकर शंख बजाये।

दृष्ट्वा तु कौरवं सैन्यं भयत्रस्तं प्रविद्रुतम् अन्योन्यं समभाषन्त पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह

On seeing that the Kaurava soldiers were terrified and were running away, the Pāñcāla-s and the Pāṇḍava-s spoke to each other.

यह देखकर कि कौरव सैनिक भयभीत हो गये थे और भाग रहे थे, पंचाल और पांडव आपस में बात करने लगे।

अद्य राजा सत्यधृतिर्जितामित्रो युधिष्ठिरः अद्य दुर्योधनो हीनो दीप्तया नृपतिश्रिया

"King Yudhiṣṭhira is firm in his devotion to the truth and has vanquished the enemy today. King Duryodhana has been destroyed today and has lost his glory and prosperity.

"राजा युधिष्ठिर सत्य के प्रति अपनी भक्ति में दृढ़ हैं और उन्होंने आज शत्रु को परास्त कर दिया है। राजा दुर्योधन आज नष्ट हो गया है और उसने अपना गौरव और समृद्धि खो दी है।

अद्य श्रुत्वा हतं पुत्रं धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः निःसंज्ञः पतितो भूमौ किल्बिषं प्रतिपद्यताम्

On hearing that his sons have been killed, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, will fall down senseless on the ground and grieve.

यह सुनकर कि उनके पुत्र मारे गये हैं, मनुष्यों के स्वामी धृतराष्ट्र मूर्छित होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ेंगे और शोक मनायेंगे।

अद्य जानातु कौन्तेयं समर्थं सर्वधन्विनाम् अद्यात्मानं च दुर्मेधा गर्हयिष्यति पापकृत् अद्य क्षत्तुर्वचः सत्यं स्मरतां ब्रुवतो हितम्

He will realize today, how capable Kaunteya is, among all archers. The evil-minded one will today censure his evil deeds. Today, he will remember the truthful and beneficial words that were spoken by Kshatta earlier.

उसे आज एहसास होगा कि सभी धनुर्धरों में कौन्तेय कितना सक्षम है। दुष्ट मन वाला आज अपने बुरे कर्मों की निंदा करेगा। आज उसे क्षत्ता के पहले कहे हुए सत्य और हितकारी वचन याद आएँगे।

अद्यप्रभृति पार्थांश्च प्रेष्यभूत उपाचरन् विजानातु नृपो दुःखं यत्प्राप्तं पाण्डुनन्दनैः

Let him serve the Pārtha-s today, with different kinds of objects. Let the king know the sorrow that the sons of Pāṇḍu had felt.

आज वह नाना प्रकार की वस्तुओं से पार्थों की सेवा करे। पाण्डु के पुत्रों को जो दुःख हुआ था, वह राजा को ज्ञात हो।

अद्य कृष्णस्य माहात्म्यं जानातु स महीपतिः अद्यार्जुनधनुर्घोषं घोरं जानातु संयुगे

Let the lord of the earth learn about Kṛṣṇā's greatness today. Today, let him realize how terrible the twang of Arjuna's bow is in battle.

पृथ्वी के स्वामी को आज कृष्ण की महानता के बारे में जानने दें। आज उसे यह एहसास हो कि युद्ध में अर्जुन के धनुष की टंकार कितनी भयंकर होती है।

अस्त्राणां च बलं सर्वं बाह्वोश्च बलमाहवे अद्य ज्ञास्यति भीमस्य बलं घोरं महात्मनः

Today, let him know the terrible strength of the great-souled Bhīmā, who possesses the strength of all weapons and the strength of his arms in battle.

Duryodhana will be slain in the battle, like the āsura Māyā by Śākra. Bhīmasena slew Duḥśāsana. There is no one else in the world who could have performed the task that the immensely strong Bhīmā has.

दुर्योधन युद्ध में मारा जाएगा, जैसे शक्र द्वारा असुर माया। भीमसेन ने दुःशासन को मार डाला। संसार में कोई भी ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं है जो उस कार्य को कर सके जो अत्यंत बलशाली भीम ने किया है।

जानीतामद्य ज्येष्ठस्य पाण्डवस्य पराक्रमम् मद्रराजं हतं श्रुत्वा देवैरपि सुदुःसहम्

Today, on hearing about the death of the king of Madra, who was extremely difficult for even the gods to withstand, let him know about the eldest Pāṇḍava's valour.

आज मद्र देश के राजा की मृत्यु के बारे में सुनकर, जिसे झेलना देवताओं के लिए भी अत्यंत कठिन था, उन्हें ज्येष्ठ पांडव की वीरता के बारे में बताएं।

अद्य ज्ञास्यति संग्रामे माद्रीपुत्रौ महाबलौ निहते सौबले शूरे गान्धारेषु च सर्वशः

In the encounter today, he will know about the great strength of the two sons of Mādrī, when the brave Saubala and all those from Gandara are killed.

आज मुठभेड़ में उसे माद्री के दोनों पुत्रों की महान शक्ति के बारे में पता चलेगा, जब बहादुर सौबाला और गंडारा के सभी लोग मारे जाएंगे।

कथं तेषां जयो न स्याद्येषां योद्धा धनंजयः सात्यकिर्भीमसेनश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः

Why should victory not be on the side of those who have a warrior like Dhanañjayā, or Sātyaki, Bhīmasena, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna,

In great delight, these were the words they spoke to each other. O king! Those on your side were routed and the Sṛñjaya-s followed them from the rear.

अत्यंत प्रसन्नता के साथ उन्होंने एक-दूसरे से यही शब्द कहे। हे राजा! आपके पक्ष के लोगों को पराजित कर दिया गया और सृंजय ने पीछे से उनका पीछा किया।

धनंजयो रथानीकमभ्यवर्तत वीर्यवान् माद्रीपुत्रौ च शकुनिं सात्यकिश्च महारथः

The brave Dhanañjayā attacked the army of chariots and Mādrī's sons and mahāratha Sātyaki attacked Śākuni.

जघने युध्यमानं हि कौन्तेयो मां धनंजयः नोत्सहेताभ्यतिक्रान्तुं वेलामिव महोदधिः

I will fight and kill Kaunteya, or Dhanañjayā will kill me. He will not be able to cross me, like the great ocean against the shoreline.

हे सारथी! पाण्डवों द्वारा आक्रमण की गई उस विशाल सेना को देखो। देखो. हर दिशा में सैनिकों के कारण धूल ही धूल उड़ी हुई है.

सिंहनादांश्च बहुशः शृणु घोरान्भयानकान् तस्माद्याहि शनैः सूत जघनं परिपालय

Listen to the many leonine roars. They are terrible and fearful. O charioteer! Advance slowly there and protect the rear.

On hearing the words of your son, spoken like the best of brave ones, the charioteer gently goaded the horses, tied to golden harnesses.

श्रेष्ठ शूरवीरों के समान आपके पुत्र के वचन सुनकर सारथी ने सुनहले बंधनों से बँधे हुए घोड़ों को धीरे से हाँका।

गजाश्वरथिभिर्हीनास्त्यक्तात्मानः पदातयः एकविंशतिसाहस्राः संयुगायावतस्थिरे

There were twenty-one thousand foot soldiers who were ready to lay down their lives, though they were without elephants, horses and charioteers. They stationed themselves for the battle.

In great delight, they clashed against each other. There was an extremely great encounter. It was fierce in form and terrible.

अत्यंत प्रसन्नता में वे एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गये। बहुत ही शानदार मुठभेड़ हुई. उसका रूप भयंकर और भयंकर था।

भीमसेनं तदा राजन्धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् बलेन चतुरङ्गेण नानादेश्या न्यवारयन्

O king! Those four kinds of troops, who had come from many countries, countered Bhīmasena and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna.

Invincible in the battle, they angrily attacked Bhīmasena. Those on the side of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra did not speak to each other. But they roared. They surrounded Bhīmā in the battle and struck him from all sides.

युद्ध में अजेय रहने पर उन्होंने क्रोधपूर्वक भीमसेन पर आक्रमण कर दिया। धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के पक्ष के लोग एक-दूसरे से बात नहीं करते थे। लेकिन वे दहाड़ने लगे. उन्होंने युद्ध में भीम को घेर लिया और चारों ओर से उस पर प्रहार किया।

स वध्यमानः समरे पदातिगणसंवृतः न चचाल रथोपस्थे मैनाक इव पर्वतः

O great king! When he was surrounded by that large number of foot soldiers in the battle, mahāratha Pāṇḍava did not waver. He remained immobile on his chariot, like Mount Maināka.

हे महान राजा! जब युद्ध में बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सैनिकों ने उन्हें घेर लिया, तो भी महारथ पांडव विचलित नहीं हुए। वह मैनाक पर्वत की तरह अपने रथ पर स्थिर रहा।

ते तु क्रुद्धा महाराज पाण्डवस्य महारथम् निग्रहीतुं प्रचक्रुर्हि योधांश्चान्यानवारयन्

He slaughtered them and they angrily attacked him, countering the other warriors who tried to repulse them.

He grasped a giant club that was decorated with gold. With this, like Yāma with a staff in his hand, he began to slay those warriors.

Bhīmā, for whom truth was his valour, slew that army of men. He was soon seen, with Dhṛṣṭadyumna at the forefront.

भीम, जिनके लिए सत्य ही उनकी वीरता थी, ने पुरुषों की उस सेना को मार डाला। जल्द ही उन्हें देखा गया, धृष्टद्युम्न सबसे आगे थे।

पादाता निहता भूमौ शिश्यिरे रुधिरोक्षिताः संभग्ना इव वातेन कर्णिकाराः सुपुष्पिताः

The slain foot soldiers lay down on the ground, their bodies covered with blood. They were like flowering karṇikāra trees shattered by a storm.

मारे गए पैदल सैनिक ज़मीन पर गिर पड़े, उनके शरीर खून से लथपथ थे। वे तूफान से टूटे हुए फूलों वाले कर्णिका पेड़ों की तरह थे।

नानापुष्पस्रजोपेता नानाकुण्डलधारिणः नानाजात्या हतास्तत्र नानादेशसमागताः

They were adorned with garlands made out of different kinds of flowers. They wore many kinds of earrings. They were of different races and had assembled from different countries.

वे विभिन्न प्रकार के फूलों से बनी मालाओं से सुशोभित थे। उन्होंने कई तरह की बालियां पहनीं. वे अलग-अलग नस्ल के थे और अलग-अलग देशों से इकट्ठे हुए थे।

पताकाध्वजसंछन्नं पदातीनां महद्बलम् निकृत्तं विबभौ तत्र घोररूपं भयानकम्

That large army of foot soldiers was killed there. Flags and standards were scattered around. They were destroyed and it was beautiful, but fearful and terrible in form.

पैदल सैनिकों की वह बड़ी सेना वहीं मार दी गई। चारों ओर झंडे और ध्वज बिखरे हुए थे। वे नष्ट हो गये और वह सुन्दर, परन्तु रूप में भयानक और भयानक था।

युधिष्ठिरपुरोगास्तु सर्वसैन्यमहारथाः अभ्यधावन्महात्मानं पुत्रं दुर्योधनं तव

With Yudhiṣṭhira at the forefront, all the soldiers and mahāratha-s attacked your great-souled son, Duryodhana. All the great archers on your side retreated.

युधिष्ठिर को आगे लेकर सभी सैनिकों और महारथियों ने आपके महाबली पुत्र दुर्योधन पर आक्रमण कर दिया। आपके पक्ष के सभी महान धनुर्धर पीछे हट गये।

ते सर्वे तावकान्दृष्ट्वा महेष्वासान्पराङ्मुखान् नाभ्यवर्तन्त ते पुत्रं वेलेव मकरालयम्

On seeing this, they attacked. But they could not cross your son, like the abode of makara-s against the shoreline. We witnessed your son's extraordinary manliness.

देखते ही देखते उन्होंने हमला कर दिया. लेकिन वे आपके बेटे को पार नहीं कर सके, जैसे तटरेखा के विपरीत मकर-एस का निवास। हमने आपके बेटे की असाधारण मर्दानगी देखी।

तदद्भुतमपश्याम तव पुत्रस्य पौरुषम् यदेकं सहिताः पार्था न शेकुरतिवर्तितुम्

Though he was single-handed, all the united Pārtha-s were incapable of withstanding him.

हालाँकि वह अकेला था, सभी एकजुट पार्थ-उसका सामना करने में असमर्थ थे।

नातिदूरापयातं तु कृतबुद्धिं पलायने दुर्योधनः स्वकं सैन्यमब्रवीद्भृशविक्षतम्

Though they had made up their minds to run away, they had not gone far. Duryodhana spoke to his own soldiers, who were mangled with arrows.

हालाँकि उन्होंने भागने का मन बना लिया था, लेकिन वे ज़्यादा दूर नहीं गए थे। दुर्योधन ने अपने ही सैनिकों से बात की, जो बाणों से घायल हो गये थे।

न तं देशं प्रपश्यामि पृथिव्यां पर्वतेषु वा यत्र यातान्न वो हन्युः पाण्डवाः किं सृतेन वः

"I do not see a country or mountain on earth, where the Pāṇḍava-s will not follow and kill you. What is the point of running away?

"मुझे पृथ्वी पर ऐसा कोई देश या पर्वत नहीं दिखता, जहाँ पांडव तुम्हारा पीछा न कर सकें और तुम्हें मार न सकें। भागने का क्या मतलब है?"

अल्पं च बलमेतेषां कृष्णौ च भृशविक्षतौ यदि सर्वेऽत्र तिष्ठामो ध्रुवो नो विजयो भवेत्

They have only a little bit of their army left and the two Kṛṣṇās have been severely wounded. If all of us take a stand, it is certain that there will be victory.

उनकी सेना थोड़ी ही बची है और दोनों कृष्ण गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए हैं। यदि हम सभी लोग ठान लें तो जीत निश्चित है।

विप्रयातांस्तु वो भिन्नान्पाण्डवाः कृतकिल्बिषान् अनुसृत्य हनिष्यन्ति श्रेयो नः समरे स्थितम्

If you run away, the Pāṇḍava-s will destroy all of us. They will pursue and kill us. It is better to be stationed in battle.

यदि तुम भाग जाओगे तो पांडव हम सभी को नष्ट कर देंगे। वे हमारा पीछा करेंगे और हमें मार डालेंगे। युद्ध में तैनात रहना बेहतर है.

शृणुध्वं क्षत्रियाः सर्वे यावन्तः स्थ समागताः यदा शूरं च भीरुं च मारयत्यन्तकः सदा को नु मूढो न युध्येत पुरुषः क्षत्रियब्रुवः

O kṣatriya-s! All of you listen to me, those who are still assembled here. Yāma slays both cowards and brave ones. Which man calls himself a kṣatriya and is stupid enough not to fight?

हे क्षत्रियों! तुम सब मेरी बात सुनो, जो अब भी यहां इकट्ठे हैं। यम कायर और शूरवीर दोनों को मार डालते हैं। कौन आदमी अपने आप को क्षत्रिय कहता है और इतना मूर्ख है कि लड़ता नहीं?

श्रेयो नो भीमसेनस्य क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थितम् सुखः सांग्रामिको मृत्युः क्षत्रधर्मेण युध्यताम् जित्वेह सुखमाप्नोति हतः प्रेत्य महत्फलम्

It is better to be stationed before the angry Bhīmasena. If we resort to the dharma of kṣatriya-s and fight, there will be happiness, even if there is death in the battle. If we win, we will obtain happiness. If we are slain, we will obtain great fruits in the world hereafter.

क्रोधित भीमसेन के सामने तैनात रहना ही बेहतर है। यदि हम क्षत्रिय-धर्म का सहारा लें और युद्ध करें, तो सुख होगा, भले ही युद्ध में मृत्यु ही क्यों न हो। जीतेंगे तो ख़ुशी मिलेगी. यदि हम मारे गये तो हमें परलोक में महान् फल प्राप्त होंगे।

न युद्धधर्माच्छ्रेयान्वै पन्थाः स्वर्गस्य कौरवाः अचिरेण जिताँल्लोकान्हतो युद्धे समश्नुते

O Kaurava-s! There is no greater path towards heaven than by resorting to the dharma of fighting. If we are killed in battle, we will soon obtain all those revered worlds."

हे कौरवों! युद्ध के धर्म का सहारा लेने से बढ़कर स्वर्ग की ओर कोई बड़ा मार्ग नहीं है। यदि हम युद्ध में मारे गये तो हम शीघ्र ही उन सभी पूजनीय लोकों को प्राप्त कर लेंगे।”

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य पूजयित्वा च पार्थिवाः पुनरेवान्ववर्तन्त पाण्डवानाततायिनः

On hearing these words, the kings applauded them. They returned and attacked the Pāṇḍava assassins.

ये बातें सुनकर राजाओं ने उनकी सराहना की। वे लौट आए और पांडव हत्यारों पर हमला कर दिया।

तानापतत एवाशु व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः प्रत्युद्ययुस्तदा पार्था जयगृध्राः प्रहारिणः

On seeing that they were swiftly attacking, the Pārtha-s, who were strikers, arrayed themselves in battle formation. Desiring victory, those strikers counter-attacked.

यह देखकर कि वे तेजी से आक्रमण कर रहे हैं, पार्थ-वंशज, जो आक्रमणकारी थे, युद्ध की शृंखला में संगठित हो गये। जीत की चाहत रखते हुए उन स्ट्राइकरों ने जवाबी हमला बोला.

धनंजयो रथेनाजावभ्यवर्तत वीर्यवान् विश्रुतं त्रिषु लोकेषु गाण्डीवं विक्षिपन्धनुः

The valiant Dhanañjayā attacked on his chariot. He brandished Gāṇḍīva bow, famous in the three worlds.

वीर धनंजय ने उनके रथ पर आक्रमण किया। उन्होंने गाण्डीव धनुष लहराया, जो तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध था।

माद्रीपुत्रौ च शकुनिं सात्यकिश्च महाबलः जवेनाभ्यपतन्हृष्टा यतो वै तावकं बलम्

Mādrī's sons and the immensely strong Sātyaki attacked Śākuni. Cheerfully and quickly, they endeavoured to attack your army.

माद्री के पुत्रों तथा अत्यंत बलशाली सात्यकि ने शकुनि पर आक्रमण कर दिया। उन्होंने ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी और तेज़ी से आपकी सेना पर हमला करने का प्रयास किया।
