संजय उवाच अथान्यद्धनुरादाय बलवद्वेगवत्तरम् युधिष्ठिरं मद्रपतिर्विद्ध्वा सिंह इवानदत्

Sañjaya said: The lord of Madra picked up another bow that was more powerful and capable of bearing a greater load. He pierced Yudhiṣṭhira and roared like a lion.

संजय ने कहा: मद्र के स्वामी ने एक और धनुष उठाया जो अधिक शक्तिशाली था और अधिक भार उठाने में सक्षम था। उसने युधिष्ठिर को बींध डाला और सिंह की भाँति दहाड़ने लगा।

ततः स शरवर्षेण पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् अभ्यवर्षदमेयात्मा क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभः

He showered down arrows, like Pārjanya pouring down rain. The bull among the kṣatriya-s, immeasurable in his soul, showered arrows on the kṣatriya-s.

उन्होंने बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे पर्जन्य वर्षा कर रहा हो। क्षत्रियों के बीच बैल ने, अपनी आत्मा में अथाह, क्षत्रियों पर तीरों की वर्षा की।

सात्यकिं दशभिर्विद्ध्वा भीमसेनं त्रिभिः शरैः सहदेवं त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा युधिष्ठिरमपीडयत्

He pierced Sātyaki with ten arrows and Bhīmasena with three. He pierced Sahadeva with three and afflicted Yudhiṣṭhira.

उन्होंने दस बाणों से सात्यकि को और तीन बाणों से भीमसेन को घायल कर दिया। उसने सहदेव को तीन से घायल कर दिया और युधिष्ठिर को भी घायल कर दिया।

तांस्तानन्यान्महेष्वासान्साश्वान्सरथकुञ्जरान् कुञ्जरान्कुञ्जरारोहानश्वानश्वप्रयायिनः रथांश्च रथिभिः सार्धं जघान रथिनां वरः

He afflicted all the other great archers, with their horses, chariots and elephants. The supreme among rāṭha-s destroyed elephants and elephant riders, horses and horse riders and chariots and rāṭha-s.

उसने अन्य सभी महान धनुर्धरों को उनके घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों से पीड़ित किया। रथ-सवारों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने हाथियों और हाथी सवारों, घोड़ों और घुड़सवारों और रथों और रथों को नष्ट कर दिया।

बाहूंश्चिच्छेद च तथा सायुधान्केतनानि च चकार च महीं योधैस्तीर्णां वेदीं कुशैरिव

He severed arms, weapons and flags. He scattered the earth with warriors, like a sacrificial altar strewn with kuśa gras-s.

उसने अस्त्र-शस्त्र और ध्वजाएँ अलग-अलग कर दीं। उसने पृथ्वी को योद्धाओं से बिखेर दिया, जैसे कि यज्ञ की वेदी कुश घास से बिखरी हुई हो।

तथा तमरिसैन्यानि घ्नन्तं मृत्युमिवान्तकम् परिवव्रुर्भृशं क्रुद्धाः पाण्डुपाञ्चालसोमकाः

He slaughtered the soldiers, like Death, the Destroyer. The Pāṇḍu-s, Pāñcāla-s and Somaka-s angrily surrounded him.

उसने मृत्यु, विध्वंसक की तरह सैनिकों का वध किया। पाण्डु, पंचाल और सोमक ने क्रोधपूर्वक उन्हें घेर लिया।

तं भीमसेनश्च शिनेश्च नप्ता; माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ समागतं भीमबलेन राज्ञा; पर्यापुरन्योन्यमथाह्वयन्तः

Bhīmasena, Śini's grandson and Mādrī's sons, foremost among men, challenged him and clashed against him in turn, while he was fighting with the king, terrible in his strength.

भीमसेन, शिनि के पोते और माद्री के पुत्र, पुरुषों में अग्रणी, ने उसे चुनौती दी और बदले में उससे भिड़ गए, जबकि वह राजा के साथ लड़ रहा था, उसकी ताकत में भयानक था।

ततस्तु शूराः समरे नरेन्द्रं; मद्रेश्वरं प्राप्य युधां वरिष्ठम् आवार्य चैनं समरे नृवीरा; जघ्नुः शरैः पत्रिभिरुग्रवेगैः

Those brave Indra-s among men, supreme among warriors, reached the lord of Madra. In the battle, those brave ones among men struck him with arrows that were fierce and powerful.

वे वीर इन्द्र, योद्धाओं में श्रेष्ठ, मद्रराज के पास पहुँचे। युद्ध में उन शूरवीरों ने भयंकर एवं शक्तिशाली बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया।

संरक्षितो भीमसेनेन राजा; माद्रीसुताभ्यामथ माधवेन मद्राधिपं पत्रिभिरुग्रवेगैः; स्तनान्तरे धर्मसुतो निजघ्ने

The king was protected by Bhīmasena, Mādrī's sons and Mādhava. Dharma's son struck the lord of Madra between the breasts with fierce and powerful arrows.

राजा की रक्षा भीमसेन, माद्री के पुत्रों और माधव ने की थी। धर्मपुत्र ने भयंकर और शक्तिशाली बाणों से मद्रराज की छाती के बीच में प्रहार किया।

ततो रणे तावकानां रथौघाः; समीक्ष्य मद्राधिपतिं शरार्तम् पर्यावव्रुः प्रवराः सर्वशश्च; दुर्योधनस्यानुमते समन्तात्

Those on your side saw that the lord of Madra was afflicted by arrows in the battle. On the instructions of Duryodhana, those supreme ones surrounded him with an array of chariots from all sides.

आपके पक्ष के लोगों ने देखा कि मद्रराज युद्ध में बाणों से पीड़ित हो गये हैं। दुर्योधन की आज्ञा से उन श्रेष्ठजनों ने रथों की शृंखला से उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

ततो द्रुतं मद्रजनाधिपो रणे; युधिष्ठिरं सप्तभिरभ्यविध्यत् तं चापि पार्थो नवभिः पृषत्कै;र्विव्याध राजंस्तुमुले महात्मा

In the encounter, the lord of Madra speedily pierced Yudhiṣṭhira with seven arrows. O king! In the tumultuous battle, the great-souled Pārtha pierced him with nine arrows.

मुठभेड़ में मद्रराज ने तेजी से सात बाणों से युधिष्ठिर को घायल कर दिया। हे राजा! उस घमासान युद्ध में महाबली पार्थ ने नौ बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

आकर्णपूर्णायतसंप्रयुक्तैः; शरैस्तदा संयति तैलधौतैः अन्योन्यमाच्छादयतां महारथौ; मद्राधिपश्चापि युधिष्ठिरश्च

Those two mahāratha-s, the lord of Madra and Yudhiṣṭhira, drew their bows back up to their ears and covered each other with arrows that had been washed in oil.

मद्रराज और युधिष्ठिर, उन दोनों महारथियों ने अपने धनुष वापस कानों तक खींच लिये और तेल में धोये हुए बाणों से एक-दूसरे को ढक दिया।

ततस्तु तूर्णं समरे महारथौ; परस्परस्यान्तरमीक्षमाणौ शरैर्भृशं विव्यधतुर्नृपोत्तमौ; महाबलौ शत्रुभिरप्रधृष्यौ

The two mahāratha-s swiftly glanced towards each other in the battle. Those two supreme among kings were immensely strong. They attacked the enemy and severely pierced each other.

युद्ध में दोनों महारथियों ने तेजी से एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा। राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ वे दोनों अत्यंत बलशाली थे। उन्होंने दुश्मन पर हमला किया और एक-दूसरे को गंभीर रूप से घायल कर दिया।

तयोर्धनुर्ज्यातलनिस्वनो महा;न्महेन्द्रवज्राशनितुल्यनिस्वनः परस्परं बाणगणैर्महात्मनोः; प्रवर्षतोर्मद्रपपाण्डुवीरयोः

A great sound arose because of the twanging of bows and the slapping of palms. It was like the roar of the great Indra's vajra. Those two brave and great-souled ones, the lord of Madra and Pāṇḍu, showered down large numbers of arrows on each other.

धनुष की टंकार और हथेलियों की थाप से महान ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई। यह महान इंद्र के वज्र की गर्जना के समान था। मद्र और पाण्डु के स्वामी उन दोनों वीर और महात्माओं ने एक-दूसरे पर बड़ी संख्या में बाणों की वर्षा की।

तौ चेरतुर्व्याघ्रशिशुप्रकाशौ; महावनेष्वामिषगृद्धिनाविव विषाणिनौ नागवराविवोभौ; ततक्षतुः संयुगजातदर्पौ

They circled around, like young tigers in a great forest in search of meat. They insolently gored each other, like the best of elephants using their tusks.

वे मांस की तलाश में एक विशाल जंगल में युवा बाघों की तरह चारों ओर चक्कर लगाते रहे। वे एक-दूसरे को धृष्टतापूर्वक घायल करने लगे, जैसे सर्वोत्तम हाथी अपने दाँतों का प्रयोग करते हैं।

ततस्तु मद्राधिपतिर्महात्मा; युधिष्ठिरं भीमबलं प्रसह्य विव्याध वीरं हृदयेऽतिवेगं; शरेण सूर्याग्निसमप्रभेण

The great-souled lord of Madra struck the brave Yudhiṣṭhira, whose valour was terrible, in the chest with a powerful arrow that was like the sun or the fire in its splendour.

महाबली मद्रराज ने भयानक पराक्रम वाले वीर युधिष्ठिर की छाती में सूर्य अथवा अग्नि के समान तेज वाले शक्तिशाली बाण से प्रहार किया।

ततोऽतिविद्धोऽथ युधिष्ठिरोऽपि; सुसंप्रयुक्तेन शरेण राजन् जघान मद्राधिपतिं महात्मा; मुदं च लेभे ऋषभः कुरूणाम्

O king! Yudhiṣṭhira, the bull among the Kuru lineage, was grievously struck by that well-aimed arrow. He struck the great-souled lord of Madra back and was delighted.

हे राजा! कुरु वंश का बैल युधिष्ठिर उस अच्छे निशाने वाले बाण से गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया। उसने मद्र के महाबली स्वामी पर प्रहार किया और प्रसन्न हो गया।

ततो मुहूर्तादिव पार्थिवेन्द्रो; लब्ध्वा संज्ञां क्रोधसंरक्तनेत्रः शतेन पार्थं त्वरितो जघान; सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमप्रभावः

In a short instant, the Indra among kings regained his senses. His eyes were red with rage. He was like the one with one thousand eyes in his prowess. He swiftly struck Pārtha with one hundred arrows.

कुछ ही देर में राजाओं में इंद्र को होश आ गया। उसकी आँखें क्रोध से लाल हो गयीं थीं। वह अपने पराक्रम में एक हजार आँखों वाले व्यक्ति के समान था। उसने तेजी से एक सौ बाणों द्वारा पार्थ को घायल कर दिया।

त्वरंस्ततो धर्मसुतो महात्मा; शल्यस्य क्रुद्धो नवभिः पृषत्कैः भित्त्वा ह्युरस्तपनीयं च वर्म; जघान षड्भिस्त्वपरैः पृषत्कैः

Dharma's great-souled son wrathfully struck Śalya with nine arrows. These pierced his golden armour and he struck him again with another six arrows.

धर्म के महाबली पुत्र ने क्रोधपूर्वक नौ बाणों से शल्य को घायल कर दिया। इनसे उसके सुनहरे कवच में छेद हो गया और उसने फिर से छह बाणों से उस पर प्रहार किया।

ततस्तु मद्राधिपतिः प्रहृष्टो; धनुर्विकृष्य व्यसृजत्पृषत्कान् द्वाभ्यां क्षुराभ्यां च तथैव राज्ञ;श्चिच्छेद चापं कुरुपुंगवस्य

The lord of Madra was delighted at this. He stretched his bow and released two razor-sharp arrows towards the king, severing the bow of the bull among the Kuru lineage.

इस पर मद्रराज प्रसन्न हुए। उसने अपना धनुष बढ़ाया और राजा की ओर दो तेज तीर छोड़े, जिससे कुरु वंश के बैल का धनुष कट गया।

नवं ततोऽन्यत्समरे प्रगृह्य; राजा धनुर्घोरतरं महात्मा शल्यं तु विद्ध्वा निशितैः समन्ता;द्यथा महेन्द्रो नमुचिं शिताग्रैः

The great-souled king picked up another bow in that encounter, one that was more terrible. From every direction, he pierced Śalya with sharp arrows that were pointed at the tip, like the great Indra against Namuci.

उस मुठभेड़ में महान आत्मा वाले राजा ने एक और धनुष उठाया, जो अधिक भयानक था। हर दिशा से उसने शल्य को नुकीले तीखे बाणों से घायल कर दिया, जैसे महान इंद्र ने नमुचि के विरुद्ध किया था।

ततस्तु शल्यो नवभिः पृषत्कै;र्भीमस्य राज्ञश्च युधिष्ठिरस्य निकृत्य रौक्मे पटुवर्मणी तयो;र्विदारयामास भुजौ महात्मा

Śalya used nine arrows to sever the golden armour of Bhīmā and King Yudhiṣṭhira and then struck the great-souled ones in their arms.

शल्य ने भीम और राजा युधिष्ठिर के स्वर्ण कवच को तोड़ने के लिए नौ बाणों का प्रयोग किया और फिर उन महारथियों को उनकी भुजाओं में मार डाला।

ततोऽपरेण ज्वलितार्कतेजसा; क्षुरेण राज्ञो धनुरुन्ममाथ कृपश्च तस्यैव जघान सूतं; षड्भिः शरैः सोऽभिमुखं पपात

He then used another razor-sharp and flaming arrow, as resplendent as the sun, to sever the king's bow. At this, Kṛpa used six arrows to slay his charioteer, who fell down in front of him.

फिर उसने राजा के धनुष को काटने के लिए सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान एक और तेज और ज्वलनशील बाण का उपयोग किया। इस पर कृपा ने अपने सारथी को मारने के लिए छह बाणों का प्रयोग किया, जो उनके सामने गिर गया।

मद्राधिपश्चापि युधिष्ठिरस्य; शरैश्चतुर्भिर्निजघान वाहान् वाहांश्च हत्वा व्यकरोन्महात्मा; योधक्षयं धर्मसुतस्य राज्ञः

The lord of Madra used his arrows to slay Yudhiṣṭhira's four horses. Having slain the horses, the great-souled one began to destroy the warriors who were on the side of the king, Dharma's son.

मद्रराज ने अपने बाणों से युधिष्ठिर के चारों घोड़ों को मार डाला। घोड़ों को मारकर महाबली ने उन योद्धाओं को नष्ट करना शुरू कर दिया जो धर्म के पुत्र राजा के पक्ष में थे।

तथा कृते राजनि भीमसेनो; मद्राधिपस्याशु ततो महात्मा छित्त्वा धनुर्वेगवता शरेण; द्वाभ्यामविध्यत्सुभृशं नरेन्द्रम्

When the king was reduced to this state, the greatsouled Bhīmasena quickly attacked the king of Madra and severed his bow with a powerful arrow. He then severely pierced that Indra among men with two arrows.

जब राजा इस स्थिति में आ गया, तो महाबली भीमसेन ने तुरंत मद्र के राजा पर हमला किया और एक शक्तिशाली बाण से उसका धनुष काट दिया। फिर उन्होंने दो बाणों से मनुष्यों में से उस इन्द्र को गंभीर रूप से घायल कर दिया।

अथापरेणास्य जहार यन्तुः; कायाच्छिरः संनहनीयमध्यात् जघान चाश्वांश्चतुरः स शीघ्रं; तथा भृशं कुपितो भीमसेनः

With another arrow, he severed the head of his charioteer from his armoured body. Extremely enraged, Bhīmasena swiftly killed his four horses.

दूसरे बाण से उन्होंने अपने सारथी का सिर उसके बख्तरबंद शरीर से अलग कर दिया। अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर भीमसेन ने तेजी से उसके चार घोड़ों को मार डाला।

तमग्रणीः सर्वधनुर्धराणा;मेकं चरन्तं समरेऽतिवेगम् भीमः शतेन व्यकिरच्छराणां; माद्रीपुत्रः सहदेवस्तथैव

The foremost among all archers was single-handedly roaming around in that field of battle, with great force. Bhīmā enveloped him with one hundred arrows and so did Mādrī's son, Sahadeva.

समस्त धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर अकेले ही महान् बल के साथ उस युद्धभूमि में घूम रहा था। भीम ने उसे एक सौ बाणों से घेर लिया और माद्री के पुत्र सहदेव ने भी ऐसा ही किया।

तैः सायकैर्मोहितं वीक्ष्य शल्यं; भीमः शरैरस्य चकर्त वर्म स भीमसेनेन निकृत्तवर्मा; मद्राधिपश्चर्म सहस्रतारम्

On seeing that he was confounded by these arrows, Bhīmā severed Śalya's armour with his arrows. When his armour was severed by Bhīmāsena, the lord of Madra picked up a shield that was marked with the signs of one thousand stars.

यह देखकर कि वह इन बाणों से भ्रमित हो गया है, भीम ने अपने बाणों से शल्य का कवच काट दिया। जब भीमसेन द्वारा उसका कवच तोड़ दिया गया, तो मद्र के स्वामी ने एक ढाल उठाई जिस पर एक हजार सितारों के चिन्ह अंकित थे।

प्रगृह्य खड्गं च रथान्महात्मा; प्रस्कन्द्य कुन्तीसुतमभ्यधावत् छित्त्वा रथेषां नकुलस्य सोऽथ; युधिष्ठिरं भीमबलोऽभ्यधावत्

The great-souled one jumped down from his chariot. Grasping a sword, he dashed towards Kuntī's son. Terrible in his strength, he destroyed Nākula's chariot and advanced towards Yudhiṣṭhira.

वह महाबली अपने रथ से नीचे कूद पड़ा। वह तलवार लेकर कुंती के पुत्र की ओर झपटा। अपनी ताकत में भयानक, उसने नकुल के रथ को नष्ट कर दिया और युधिष्ठिर की ओर बढ़ गया।

तं चापि राजानमथोत्पतन्तं; क्रुद्धं यथैवान्तकमापतन्तम् धृष्टद्युम्नो द्रौपदेयाः शिखण्डी; शिनेश्च नप्ता सहसा परीयुः

He angrily descended on the king, like an advancing Yāma. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Draupadī's sons, Śikhaṇḍī and Śini's descendant swiftly advanced to the rescue.

वह क्रोधपूर्वक आगे बढ़ते हुए यम के समान राजा पर टूट पड़ा। धृष्टद्युम्न, द्रौपदी के पुत्र, शिखंडी और शिनि के वंशज तेजी से बचाव के लिए आगे बढ़े।

अथास्य चर्माप्रतिमं न्यकृन्त;द्भीमो महात्मा दशभिः पृषत्कः खड्गं च भल्लैर्निचकर्त मुष्टौ; नदन्प्रहृष्टस्तव सैन्यमध्ये

The great-souled Bhīmā used ten arrows to sever his unmatched shield. He used a broad-headed arrow to sever the sword in his hand and roared in the midst of the soldiers.

महाबली भीम ने उसकी अद्वितीय ढाल को काटने के लिए दस बाणों का प्रयोग किया। उसने अपने हाथ में मौजूद तलवार को काटने के लिए चौड़े सिर वाले तीर का इस्तेमाल किया और सैनिकों के बीच में गरजने लगा।

तत्कर्म भीमस्य समीक्ष्य हृष्टा;स्ते पाण्डवानां प्रवरा रथौघाः नादं च चक्रुर्भृशमुत्स्मयन्तः; शङ्खांश्च दध्मुः शशिसंनिकाशान्

On witnessing Bhīmā's deed, the foremost of the rāṭha-s on the Pāṇḍava side were delighted. They roared in applause and blew on conch shells that were as white as the moon.

भीम के कार्य को देखकर, पांडव पक्ष के प्रमुख रथ-राज प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने तालियाँ बजाईं और चंद्रमा के समान श्वेत शंख बजाये।

तेनाथ शब्देन विभीषणेन; तवाभितप्तं बलमप्रहृष्टम् स्वेदाभिभूतं रुधिरोक्षिताङ्गं; विसंज्ञकल्पं च तथा विषण्णम्

At that terrible sound, the soldiers on your side were tormented and distressed. They were covered in sweat and their limbs were covered in blood. They were miserable and lost all sense of enterprise.

उस भयानक ध्वनि से आपके पक्ष के सैनिक व्याकुल और व्यथित हो गये। वे पसीने से लथपथ थे और उनके अंग खून से लथपथ थे। वे दुखी थे और उद्यम की सारी समझ खो बैठे थे।

स मद्रराजः सहसावकीर्णो; भीमाग्रगैः पाण्डवयोधमुख्यैः युधिष्ठिरस्याभिमुखं जवेन; सिंहो यथा मृगहेतोः प्रयातः

However, the lord of Madra violently attacked the foremost of Pāṇḍava warriors, with Bhīmā at their head. He swiftly advanced against Yudhiṣṭhira, like a lion advancing in search of deer.

हालाँकि, मद्र के स्वामी ने भीम को प्रधान करते हुए सबसे प्रमुख पांडव योद्धाओं पर हिंसक हमला किया। वह युधिष्ठिर की ओर तेजी से आगे बढ़ा, जैसे कोई शेर हिरण की तलाश में आगे बढ़ रहा हो।

स धर्मराजो निहताश्वसूतं; क्रोधेन दीप्तज्वलनप्रकाशम् दृष्ट्वा तु मद्राधिपतिं स तूर्णं; समभ्यधावत्तमरिं बलेन

Dharmarāja's horses and charioteer had been slain. He blazed in anger, like the fire. On seeing the lord of Madra advance swiftly, he also rushed forward with great force.

धर्मराज के घोड़े और सारथी मारे गये थे। वह गुस्से में आग की तरह भड़क उठा। मद्रराज को तेजी से आगे बढ़ता देख वह भी बड़े बल से आगे बढ़ा।

गोविन्दवाक्यं त्वरितं विचिन्त्य; दध्रे मतिं शल्यविनाशनाय स धर्मराजो निहताश्वसूते; रथे तिष्ठञ्शक्तिमेवाभिकाङ्क्षन्

He swiftly thought of Govinda's words and made up his mind to destroy Śalya. Though his horses and charioteer had been slain, Dharmarāja remained stationed on his chariot and wished to pick up a javelin.

उसने तुरंत गोविंदा के शब्दों के बारे में सोचा और शल्य को नष्ट करने का मन बना लिया। यद्यपि उनके घोड़े और सारथी मारे गए थे, धर्मराज अपने रथ पर ही खड़े रहे और भाला उठाना चाहते थे।

तच्चापि शल्यस्य निशम्य कर्म; महात्मनो भागमथावशिष्टम् स्मृत्वा मनः शल्यवधे यतात्मा; यथोक्तमिन्द्रावरजस्य चक्रे

The great-souled one thought about Śalya's deeds and the remaining share that had been allotted to him. Remembering this, he set his heart on killing Śalya, just as Indra's younger brother had asked him to.

महात्मा ने शल्य के कर्मों तथा उसे दिये गये शेष हिस्से के बारे में सोचा। यह याद करते हुए, उसने शल्य को मारने का मन बना लिया, जैसा कि इंद्र के छोटे भाई ने उससे कहा था।

स धर्मराजो मणिहेमदण्डां; जग्राह शक्तिं कनकप्रकाशाम् नेत्रे च दीप्ते सहसा विवृत्य; मद्राधिपं क्रुद्धमना निरैक्षत्

Dharmarāja picked up a javelin that was golden in complexion. It was bejewelled and possessed a golden handle. His eyes blazed and were dilated. With an angry heart, he glanced towards the lord of Madra.

धर्मराज ने एक भाला उठाया जिसका रंग सुनहरा था। वह रत्नजड़ित था और उसका हैंडल सुनहरा था। उसकी आँखें चमक उठीं और फैल गईं। क्रोधित मन से उन्होंने मद्रराज की ओर देखा।

निरीक्षितो वै नरदेव राज्ञा; पूतात्मना निर्हृतकल्मषेण अभून्न यद्भस्मसान्मद्रराज;स्तदद्भुतं मे प्रतिभाति राजन्

The king was a god among men. He was pure in his soul and all his sins had been cleansed. O king! Though he glanced at the lord of Madra, he was not reduced to ashes.

राजा मनुष्यों में देवता था। वह अपनी आत्मा में शुद्ध था और उसके सभी पाप साफ़ हो गए थे। हे राजा! यद्यपि उसने मद्रराज की ओर दृष्टि डाली, फिर भी वह भस्म नहीं हुआ।

ततस्तु शक्तिं रुचिरोग्रदण्डां; मणिप्रवालोज्ज्वलितां प्रदीप्ताम् चिक्षेप वेगात्सुभृशं महात्मा; मद्राधिपाय प्रवरः कुरूणाम्

This was extraordinary. That javelin possessed a beautiful tip and handle. With coral and gems, it flamed and dazzled. The great-souled one flung it with great force towards the lord of Madra, foremost among the Kuru-s.

यह असाधारण था. उस भाले में एक सुंदर टिप और हैंडल था। मूंगे और रत्नों से वह प्रज्वलित और चकाचौंध हो गया। महात्मा ने उसे कुरुवंशियों में अग्रणी मद्र के स्वामी की ओर बड़े बल से फेंका।

दीप्तामथैनां महता बलेन; सविस्फुलिङ्गां सहसा पतन्तीम् प्रैक्षन्त सर्वे कुरवः समेता; यथा युगान्ते महतीमिवोल्काम्

It blazed as it was flung with great force. It descended violently, emitting sparks. While all the assembled Kuru-s looked on, it was like a giant meteor at the time of the destruction of a yuga.

जब इसे बड़ी ताकत से उछाला गया तो यह चमक उठा। यह चिंगारी छोड़ते हुए हिंसक रूप से नीचे गिरा। जब सभी इकट्ठे हुए कुरु-स ने देखा, तो यह एक युग के विनाश के समय एक विशाल उल्का की तरह था।

तां कालरात्रीमिव पाशहस्तां; यमस्य धात्रीमिव चोग्ररूपाम् सब्रह्मदण्डप्रतिमाममोघां; ससर्ज यत्तो युधि धर्मराजः

It was like the night of destruction and like Yāma with a noose in his hand. It was fierce in form, like the midwife of destruction. It was like Brahmā's staff and was invincible. Dharmarāja had preserved it carefully for the battle.

यह विनाश की रात और हाथ में पाश लिए हुए यम के समान थी। वह विनाश की दाई के समान भयंकर रूप वाली थी। यह ब्रह्मा की लाठी के समान था और अजेय था। धर्मराज ने इसे युद्ध के लिए सावधानी से सुरक्षित रखा था।

गन्धस्रगग्र्यासनपानभोजनै;रभ्यर्चितां पाण्डुसुतैः प्रयत्नात् संवर्तकाग्निप्रतिमां ज्वलन्तीं; कृत्यामथर्वाङ्गिरसीमिवोग्राम्

The sons of Pāṇḍu had taken great care to worship it with the best of fragrances, garlands and seats, food and drink. It flamed like the fire of destruction. It was as fierce as rites performed by Atharvan and Āṅgirasa.

पांडु के पुत्रों ने उत्तम सुगंधों, मालाओं, आसनों, भोजन और पेय से इसकी पूजा करने का बहुत ध्यान रखा था। यह विनाश की आग की तरह धधक उठी। यह अथर्वण और अंगिरसा द्वारा किये गये अनुष्ठानों के समान ही भयंकर था।

ईशानहेतोः प्रतिनिर्मितां तां; त्वष्ट्रा रिपूणामसुदेहभक्षाम् भूम्यन्तरिक्षादिजलाशयानि; प्रसह्य भूतानि निहन्तुमीशाम्

Tvāṣṭra had created it for Īśāna's use. It was capable of consuming the lives and bodies of enemies. Through it, Īśa was capable of destroying all beings on earth, the firmament and bodies of water.

त्वस्त्र ने इसे ईशान के उपयोग के लिए बनाया था। यह दुश्मनों के जीवन और शरीर को भस्म करने में सक्षम था। इसके माध्यम से, ईशा पृथ्वी, आकाश और जल निकायों पर सभी प्राणियों को नष्ट करने में सक्षम था।

घण्टापताकामणिवज्रभाजं; वैडूर्यचित्रां तपनीयदण्डाम् त्वष्ट्रा प्रयत्नान्नियमेन कॢप्तां; ब्रह्मद्विषामन्तकरीममोघाम्

It was adorned with bells, flags, jewels and diamonds. It was decorated with lapis lazuli and had a golden handle. Tvāṣṭra had constructed it with great care, after controlling himself and observing rites. It was invincible and could destroy all those who hated brāhmana-s.

इसे घंटियों, झंडों, रत्नों और हीरों से सजाया गया था। इसे लैपिस लाजुली से सजाया गया था और इसका हैंडल सुनहरा था। त्वष्टा ने स्वयं को नियंत्रित करने और अनुष्ठानों का पालन करने के बाद, बहुत सावधानी से इसका निर्माण किया था। यह अजेय था और उन सभी को नष्ट कर सकता था जो ब्राह्मणों से नफरत करते थे।

बलप्रयत्नादधिरूढवेगां; मन्त्रैश्च घोरैरभिमन्त्रयित्वा ससर्ज मार्गेण च तां परेण; वधाय मद्राधिपतेस्तदानीम्

He hurled it with great force, strength and care, after having chanted terrible mantra-s over it. For the sake of destroying the lord of Madra, he dispatched it towards the enemy along the best of paths.

उसने इस पर भयानक मंत्रों का जाप करने के बाद इसे बड़ी ताकत, ताकत और सावधानी से फेंका। उसने मद्रराज को नष्ट करने के लिये उसे सर्वोत्तम मार्गों से शत्रु की ओर भेजा।

हतोऽस्यसावित्यभिगर्जमानो; रुद्रोऽन्तकायान्तकरं यथेषुम् प्रसार्य बाहुं सुदृढं सुपाणिं; क्रोधेन नृत्यन्निव धर्मराजः

Dharmarāja seemed to be dancing around in anger. He extended his firm arm, with the excellent hand. He loudly exclaimed, "O wretched one! You are dead." It was like Rudra shooting an arrow.

धर्मराज क्रोध में इधर-उधर नाचते प्रतीत हो रहे थे। उसने उत्कृष्ट हाथ से अपनी दृढ़ भुजा आगे बढ़ाई। वह जोर से चिल्लाया, "हे अभागे! तुम मर गये।" यह ऐसा था जैसे रुद्र तीर चला रहा हो।

तां सर्वशक्त्या प्रहितां स शक्तिं; युधिष्ठिरेणाप्रतिवार्यवीर्याम् प्रतिग्रहायाभिननर्द शल्यः; सम्यग्घुतामग्निरिवाज्यधाराम्

That javelin was hurled by Yudishthira with force. Śalya roared loudly and used all his strength to try to seize and repulse it. It was as if a fire was leaping up to catch clarified butter over it.

वह भाला युधिष्ठिर ने जोर से फेंका था। शल्य ने जोर से गर्जना की और उसे पकड़ने तथा खदेड़ने के लिए अपनी सारी शक्ति लगा दी। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों आग उस पर घी डालने के लिए उछल रही हो।

सा तस्य मर्माणि विदार्य शुभ्र;मुरो विशालं च तथैव वर्म विवेश गां तोयमिवाप्रसक्ता; यशो विशालं नृपतेर्दहन्ती

It pierced through his inner organs, his broad chest and his sparkling armour. It then penetrated the earth, as if it was slicing through water. The king's great fame was taken away.

यह उसके आंतरिक अंगों, उसकी चौड़ी छाती और उसके चमचमाते कवच को भेद गया। फिर वह धरती में ऐसे घुस गया, मानो वह पानी को चीर रहा हो। राजा की बड़ी प्रसिद्धि छिन गयी।

नासाक्षिकर्णास्यविनिःसृतेन; प्रस्यन्दता च व्रणसंभवेन संसिक्तगात्रो रुधिरेण सोऽभू;त्क्रौञ्चो यथा स्कन्दहतो महाद्रिः

Blood began to flow from his wounds and covered his nose, eyes, ears and mouth. His limbs were covered with blood. He was like the giant mountain Krauñca, when it had been shattered by Skānda.

उसके घावों से खून बहने लगा और उसकी नाक, आंख, कान और मुंह ढक गया। उसके अंग खून से लथपथ थे। वह उस विशाल क्रौंच पर्वत के समान था, जिसे स्कंद ने तोड़ दिया था।

प्रसार्य बाहू स रथाद्गतो गां; संछिन्नवर्मा कुरुनन्दनेन महेन्द्रवाहप्रतिमो महात्मा; वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य

He stretched out his arms and fell down from his chariot onto the ground. His armour was shattered by the descendant of the Kuru lineage. The great-souled one was like the great Indra's mount. But he was like the summit of a mountain that had been shattered by thunder.

उसने अपनी भुजाएँ फैला दीं और अपने रथ से ज़मीन पर गिर पड़ा। कुरु वंश के वंशज ने उसका कवच तोड़ दिया था। वह महान् आत्मा महान् इन्द्र की सवारी के समान थी। परन्तु वह उस पर्वत के शिखर के समान था जो गड़गड़ाहट से टूट गया हो।

बाहू प्रसार्याभिमुखो धर्मराजस्य मद्रराट् ततो निपतितो भूमाविन्द्रध्वज इवोच्छ्रितः

The king of Madra extended his arms in Dharmarāja's direction. He then fell down on the ground, like Indra's standard.

मद्र के राजा ने धर्मराज की दिशा में अपनी भुजाएँ फैला दीं। फिर वह इन्द्र के ध्वज के समान भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

स तथा भिन्नसर्वाङ्गो रुधिरेण समुक्षितः प्रत्युद्गत इव प्रेम्णा भूम्या स नरपुंगवः

All his limbs were mangled and covered with blood. The bull among men fell down affectionately on the ground,

उसके सारे अंग क्षत-विक्षत थे और खून से लथपथ थे। मनुष्यों के बीच बैल प्यार से जमीन पर गिर गया,

प्रियया कान्तया कान्तः पतमान इवोरसि चिरं भुक्त्वा वसुमतीं प्रियां कान्तामिव प्रभुः सर्वैरङ्गैः समाश्लिष्य प्रसुप्त इव सोऽभवत्

like a beloved wife who falls down on the chest of her dear husband. The lord had enjoyed the earth for a long time, like a beloved wife. He seemed to go to sleep now, clasping her with all his limbs.

एक प्यारी पत्नी की तरह जो अपने प्यारे पति की छाती पर गिरती है। भगवान ने एक प्यारी पत्नी की तरह लंबे समय तक पृथ्वी का आनंद लिया था। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे वह अब सो जाएगा, उसे अपने सभी अंगों से पकड़ लेगा।

धर्म्ये धर्मात्मना युद्धे निहतो धर्मसूनुना सम्यग्घुत इव स्विष्टः प्रशान्तोऽग्निरिवाध्वरे

The one with dharma in his soul had fought in accordance with dharma and was killed by Dharma's son. He was like a fire that had been pacified on a sacrificial altar.

जिसकी आत्मा में धर्म था, उसने धर्म के अनुसार युद्ध किया और धर्म के पुत्र द्वारा मारा गया। वह उस आग की तरह था जिसे यज्ञ वेदी पर शांत किया गया था।

शक्त्या विभिन्नहृदयं विप्रविद्धायुधध्वजम् संशान्तमपि मद्रेशं लक्ष्मीर्नैव व्यमुञ्चत

The javelin shattered his heart and he was deprived of his weapons and standard. Though he had been pacified, prosperity did not desert the lord of Madra.

भाले ने उसके दिल को तोड़ दिया और वह अपने हथियारों और मानक से वंचित हो गया। हालाँकि उन्हें शांत कर दिया गया था, फिर भी समृद्धि ने मद्र के स्वामी का साथ नहीं छोड़ा।

ततो युधिष्ठिरश्चापमादायेन्द्रधनुष्प्रभम् व्यधमद्द्विषतः संख्ये खगराडिव पन्नगान् देहासून्निशितैर्भल्लै रिपूणां नाशयन्क्षणात्

Yudhiṣṭhira picked up his bow, which was as dazzling as Indra's bow. In the battle, he began to slaughter the enemy, like the king of birds against serpents. In a short instant, he used sharp and broad-headed arrows to deprive the bodies of the enemies of their lives.

युधिष्ठिर ने अपना धनुष उठाया, जो इन्द्र के धनुष के समान ही तेजस्वी था। युद्ध में वह शत्रु का संहार करने लगा, जैसे पक्षियों का राजा साँपों का। थोड़े ही क्षण में, उसने शत्रुओं के प्राण छीनने के लिए तीखे और चौड़े सिरों वाले बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

ततः पार्थस्य बाणौघैरावृताः सैनिकास्तव निमीलिताक्षाः क्षिण्वन्तो भृशमन्योन्यमर्दिताः संन्यस्तकवचा देहैर्विपत्रायुधजीविताः

Your soldiers were completely covered by Pārtha's arrows. With their eyes closed and distressed, they began to strike each other in fear. The armour was displaced from their bodies and they lost their weapons and their lives.

पार्थ के बाणों से आपके सैनिक पूरी तरह ढक गये। अपनी आँखें बंद करके और व्यथित होकर, वे डर के मारे एक-दूसरे पर प्रहार करने लगे। उनके शरीर से कवच हट गया और उन्होंने अपने हथियार और अपनी जान गंवा दी।

ततः शल्ये निपतिते मद्रराजानुजो युवा भ्रातुः सर्वैर्गुणैस्तुल्यो रथी पाण्डवमभ्ययात्

The younger brother of the king of Madra was youthful. He was his brother's equal in all the qualities. When Śalya was brought down, the rāṭha attacked Pāṇḍava.

मद्र देश के राजा का छोटा भाई युवा था। वह सभी गुणों में अपने भाई के समान था। जब शल्य को नीचे लाया गया, तो रथ ने पांडव पर हमला कर दिया।

विव्याध च नरश्रेष्ठो नाराचैर्बहुभिस्त्वरन् हतस्यापचितिं भ्रातुश्चिकीर्षुर्युद्धदुर्मदः

He swiftly pierced that best of men with many iron arrows. He was invincible in battle and wished to observe the last rites of his brother.

उसने बड़ी तेजी से लोहे के बहुत से बाणों से उस श्रेष्ठ पुरुष को घायल कर दिया। वह युद्ध में अजेय था और अपने भाई के अंतिम संस्कार का निरीक्षण करना चाहता था।

तं विव्याधाशुगैः षड्भिर्धर्मराजस्त्वरन्निव कार्मुकं चास्य चिच्छेद क्षुराभ्यां ध्वजमेव च

Dharmarāja quickly pierced him back with six swift arrows. With a couple of razor-sharp arrows, he severed his bow and his standard.

धर्मराज ने तुरन्त छः वेगशाली बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया। उसने कुछ तीखे बाणों से उसके धनुष और ध्वज को काट डाला।

ततोऽस्य दीप्यमानेन सुदृढेन शितेन च प्रमुखे वर्तमानस्य भल्लेनापाहरच्छिरः

While he was stationed in front of him, he used a blazing, extremely firm, sharp and broad-headed arrow to sever his head.

जब वह उसके सामने खड़ा था, तो उसने उसके सिर को काटने के लिए एक धधकते, अत्यंत दृढ़, तेज और चौड़े सिर वाले बाण का उपयोग किया।

सकुण्डलं तद्ददृशे पतमानं शिरो रथात् पुण्यक्षयमिव प्राप्य पतन्तं स्वर्गवासिनम्

With the earrings, the head was seen to fall down from the chariot. This was like a resident of heaven falling down, after the store of good deeds has been exhausted.

कुण्डलों के साथ ही मस्तक रथ से नीचे गिरता हुआ दिखाई दिया। यह ऐसा ही था जैसे अच्छे कर्मों का भण्डार समाप्त हो जाने पर स्वर्गवासी का पतन हो जाए।

तस्यापकृष्टशीर्षं तच्छरीरं पतितं रथात् रुधिरेणावसिक्ताङ्गं दृष्ट्वा सैन्यमभज्यत

With the head severed, the torso fell down from the chariot. The limbs were covered with blood. On seeing this, the soldiers ran away.

सिर कटने के साथ ही धड़ रथ से नीचे गिर गया। अंग खून से लथपथ थे. यह देख सिपाही भाग खड़े हुए।

विचित्रकवचे तस्मिन्हते मद्रनृपानुजे हाहाकारं विकुर्वाणाः कुरवो विप्रदुद्रुवुः

The younger brother of the king of Madra was clad in colourful armour. On seeing that he had been slain, sounds of lamentation arose among the Kuru-s and they fled swiftly.

मद्र के राजा का छोटा भाई रंगीन कवच पहने हुए था। यह देखकर कि वह मारा गया, कौरवों में विलाप की आवाजें उठने लगीं और वे तेजी से भाग गये।

शल्यानुजं हतं दृष्ट्वा तावकास्त्यक्तजीविताः वित्रेसुः पाण्डवभयाद्रजोध्वस्तास्तथा भृशम्

On seeing that Śalya's younger brother had been killed, those on your side gave up all hope of remaining alive. They were terrified because of their fear of the Pāṇḍava-s and, covered with dust, ran away.

यह देखकर कि शल्य का छोटा भाई मारा गया, आपके पक्ष के लोगों ने जीवित रहने की सारी आशा छोड़ दी। वे पाण्डवों के भय से भयभीत हो गये और धूल से लथपथ होकर भाग गये।

तांस्तथा भज्यतस्त्रस्तान्कौरवान्भरतर्षभ शिनेर्नप्ता किरन्बाणैरभ्यवर्तत सात्यकिः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! While the terrified Kaurava-s were running away, Sātyaki, Śini's grandson, pursued them and shot arrows.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जब भयभीत कौरव भाग रहे थे, शिनि के पोते सात्यकि ने उनका पीछा किया और तीर चलाए।

तमायान्तं महेष्वासमप्रसह्यं दुरासदम् हार्दिक्यस्त्वरितो राजन्प्रत्यगृह्णादभीतवत्

He was a great archer and extremely difficult to withstand. O king! However, Hārdikya received him fearlessly and spiritedly.

वह एक महान धनुर्धर था और उसका सामना करना अत्यंत कठिन था। हे राजा! हालाँकि, हार्दिक्य ने निडरता और उत्साहपूर्वक उनका स्वागत किया।

तौ समेतौ महात्मानौ वार्ष्णेयावपराजितौ हार्दिक्यः सात्यकिश्चैव सिंहाविव मदोत्कटौ

Those two great-souled and unvanquished ones from the Vṛṣṇi lineage, Hārdikya and Sātyaki, clashed against each other. They were like maddened lions.

वृष्णि वंश के वे दो महान आत्मा और अपराजित, हार्दिक्य और सात्यकि, एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गए। वे उन्मत्त सिंहों के समान थे।

इषुभिर्विमलाभासैश्छादयन्तौ परस्परम् अर्चिर्भिरिव सूर्यस्य दिवाकरसमप्रभौ

They showered down sparkling arrows, which were like the rays of the sun, on each other. Both of them were like the sun in their radiance.

उन्होंने एक दूसरे पर सूर्य की किरणों के समान चमचमाते बाणों की वर्षा की। वे दोनों ही सूर्य के समान तेज वाले थे।

चापमार्गबलोद्धूतान्मार्गणान्वृष्णिसिंहयोः आकाशे समपश्याम पतंगानिव शीघ्रगान्

Those lions among the Vṛṣṇi lineage shot powerful arrows from the circles of their bows and they seemed to be like swift insects in the sky.

वृष्णि वंश के उन सिंहों ने अपने धनुष के घेरे से शक्तिशाली बाण छोड़े और वे आकाश में तेजी से उड़ने वाले कीड़ों के समान प्रतीत होने लगे।

सात्यकिं दशभिर्विद्ध्वा हयांश्चास्य त्रिभिः शरैः चापमेकेन चिच्छेद हार्दिक्यो नतपर्वणा

Hārdikya used ten arrows with drooping tufts to pierce Sātyaki and struck his horses with three. He then severed his bow with a single arrow.

हार्दिक्य ने सात्यकि को बींधने के लिए झुके हुए गुच्छों वाले दस बाणों का प्रयोग किया और तीन बाणों से उसके घोड़ों को घायल कर दिया। फिर उसने एक ही बाण से उसके धनुष को काट डाला।

तन्निकृत्तं धनुः श्रेष्ठमपास्य शिनिपुंगवः अन्यदादत्त वेगेन वेगवत्तरमायुधम्

The bull among the Śini lineage cast aside the best of bows that had been severed. He picked up another powerful weapon that was even more forceful.

शिनि वंश के बैल ने कटे हुए सर्वोत्तम धनुषों को अलग फेंक दिया। उसने एक और शक्तिशाली हथियार उठाया जो और भी अधिक शक्तिशाली था।

तदादाय धनुः श्रेष्ठं वरिष्ठः सर्वधन्विनाम् हार्दिक्यं दशभिर्बाणैः प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे

Picking up the best of bows, the supreme among all archers pierced Hārdikya back between the breasts with ten arrows.

समस्त धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर ने सर्वोत्तम धनुष उठाकर दस बाणों से हार्दिक्य की पीठ को छाती के बीच से बींध डाला।

ततो रथं युगेषां च छित्त्वा भल्लैः सुसंयतैः अश्वांस्तस्यावधीत्तूर्णमुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी

He used well-aimed broad-headed arrows to shatter his chariot and his yoke. He then swiftly slew his horses and his two pārṣṇi charioteers.

उसने अपने रथ और जूए को चकनाचूर करने के लिए अच्छे निशाने वाले चौड़े सिर वाले बाणों का इस्तेमाल किया। फिर उसने तेजी से उसके घोड़ों और उसके दो पार्ष्णि सारथियों को मार डाला।

मद्रराजे हते राजन्विरथे कृतवर्मणि दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं पुनरासीत्पराङ्मुखम्

O king! When the king of Madra was slain and Kritavarma deprived of his chariot, all of Duryodhana's soldiers again retreated from the battle.

हे राजा! जब मद्र के राजा मारे गए और कृतवर्मा अपने रथ से वंचित हो गए, तो दुर्योधन के सभी सैनिक फिर से युद्ध से पीछे हट गए।

तत्परे नावबुध्यन्त सैन्येन रजसा वृते बलं तु हतभूयिष्ठं तत्तदासीत्पराङ्मुखम्

Because they were covered in dust, the soldiers could no longer distinguish the enemy. The troops who were still alive retreated from the battle.

क्योंकि वे धूल से ढके हुए थे, सैनिक अब दुश्मन को पहचान नहीं पा रहे थे। जो सैनिक अभी भी जीवित थे वे युद्ध से पीछे हट गये।

ततो मुहूर्तात्तेऽपश्यन्रजो भौमं समुत्थितम् विविधैः शोणितस्रावैः प्रशान्तं पुरुषर्षभ

A dust had arisen from the earth. O bull among men! But in a short while, it was seen that this was pacified because of the several streams of blood that flowed.

धरती से एक धूल उठी थी. हे मनुष्यों में बैल! परन्तु थोड़ी ही देर में देखा गया कि रक्त की अनेक धाराएँ बहने के कारण यह शान्त हो गया।

ततो दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा भग्नं स्वबलमन्तिकात् जवेनापततः पार्थानेकः सर्वानवारयत्

From a close distance, Duryodhana saw that his troops had been shattered. He advanced with great speed and single-handedly countered all the Pārtha-s.

दुर्योधन ने निकट से देखा कि उसकी सेना चूर-चूर हो गयी है। वह बड़ी तेजी से आगे बढ़ा और अकेले ही सभी पार्थों का मुकाबला किया।

पाण्डवान्सरथान्दृष्ट्वा धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् आनर्तं च दुराधर्षं शितैर्बाणैरवाकिरत्

He saw the Pāṇḍava-s on their chariots and Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna and the invincible one from Ānarta. He countered them with his sharp arrows.

उन्होंने पांडवों को उनके रथों पर और परशत धृष्टद्युम्न और अनर्त से अजेय देखा। उसने अपने पैने बाणों से उनका प्रतिकार किया।

तं परे नाभ्यवर्तन्त मर्त्या मृत्युमिवागतम् अथान्यं रथमास्थाय हार्दिक्योऽपि न्यवर्तत

At that time, the enemy did not attack him, like mortal beings avoiding death. Hārdikya ascended another chariot and returned.

उस समय शत्रु ने मृत्यु से बचने वाले नश्वर प्राणियों की भाँति उस पर आक्रमण नहीं किया। हार्दिक्य दूसरे रथ पर चढ़े और लौट आये।

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा त्वरमाणो महारथः चतुर्भिर्निजघानाश्वान्पत्रिभिः कृतवर्मणः विव्याध गौतमं चापि षड्भिर्भल्लैः सुतेजनैः

Mahāratha King Yudhiṣṭhira swiftly slew Kritavarma's four horses with four arrows. He pierced Gautama with six broad-headed arrows that were extremely energetic.

महारथी राजा युधिष्ठिर ने तेजी से चार बाणों से कृतवर्मा के चार घोड़ों को मार डाला। उसने गौतम को छह चौड़े सिरों वाले बाणों से घायल कर दिया जो अत्यंत ऊर्जावान थे।

अश्वत्थामा ततो राज्ञा हताश्वं विरथीकृतम् समपोवाह हार्दिक्यं स्वरथेन युधिष्ठिरात्

Aśvatthāma saw that Hārdikya had been deprived of his chariot by the king and that his horses had been slain. He bore him away on his own chariot, away from Yudhiṣṭhira.

अश्वत्थामा ने देखा कि हार्दिक्य को राजा ने उसके रथ से वंचित कर दिया है और उसके घोड़े मारे गए हैं। वह उसे अपने रथ पर बैठाकर युधिष्ठिर से दूर ले गया।

ततः शारद्वतोऽष्टाभिः प्रत्यविध्यद्युधिष्ठिरम् विव्याध चाश्वान्निशितैस्तस्याष्टाभिः शिलीमुखैः

Śāradvata pierced Yudhiṣṭhira back with eight arrows and also pierced his horses with eight other sharp arrows that had been sharpened on stone.

शरद्वात ने आठ बाणों से युधिष्ठिर की पीठ को घायल कर दिया और पत्थर पर तेज किये गये आठ अन्य तीखे बाणों से उनके घोड़ों को भी घायल कर दिया।

एवमेतन्महाराज युद्धशेषमवर्तत तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन्सहपुत्रस्य भारत

O great king! At this time, the remnants of the battle raged on. O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All this happened because of your evil policy, together with that of your sons.

हे महान राजा! इस समय, युद्ध के अवशेष भड़क उठे। हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह सब आपकी तथा आपके पुत्रों की दुष्ट नीति के कारण हुआ है।

तस्मिन्महेष्वासवरे विशस्ते; संग्राममध्ये कुरुपुंगवेन पार्थाः समेताः परमप्रहृष्टाः; शङ्खान्प्रदध्मुर्हतमीक्ष्य शल्यम्

When Śalya, supreme among great archers, was slain in the midst of the battle by the bull among the Kuru lineage, all the assembled Pārtha-s saw this and were greatly delighted. In a short while, they blew on their conch shells.

जब महान धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ शल्य, कुरु वंश के बैल द्वारा युद्ध के बीच में मारे गए, तो सभी एकत्रित पार्थ-ने यह देखा और बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। थोड़ी ही देर में उन्होंने शंख बजा दिये।

युधिष्ठिरं च प्रशशंसुराजौ; पुरा सुरा वृत्रवधे यथेन्द्रम् चक्रुश्च नानाविधवाद्यशब्दा;न्निनादयन्तो वसुधां समन्तात्

They praised Yudhiṣṭhira, just as in ancient times, the gods had praised Indra after Vṛtra had been killed. They roared and sounded many kinds of musical instruments. This resounded, from every side of the earth.

उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर की स्तुति की, जैसे प्राचीन काल में वृत्र के वध के बाद देवताओं ने इन्द्र की स्तुति की थी। वे गर्जना करते थे और अनेक प्रकार के वाद्ययंत्र बजाते थे। यह पृथ्वी के हर ओर से गूँज उठा।
